I actually read the script, but I wasn't able to find it on here so I'm adding this instead.
Apparently in order to get me to love a golden age musical they just need to throw a con man in there! Who could've thought--besides anyone familiar with my taste in fictional men.
I was going to make a joke about how Harold Hill could be one of the sexiest characters in musical theatre if his name was anything other than Harold but apparently his name is actually Gregory and he chose Harold for the alliteration factor for his con man stuff.
The ending to this one is insane by the way. Imagine that you live in River City, Iowa (which I thought was a real place until I went to Iowa back in May—funnily enough, there is a place called Marian, or maybe Marion? Unsure of the spelling but I got lunch there and explored their Half Price Books) and a man comes to town and says he'll make a boys' band for you by teaching the boys in town his revolutionary new method and then That would have been my villain origin story, personally, although I do respect the musical for having the balls to end like that. It was way better than a redemption arc where Harold apologized to the townspeople and promised to become a reputable businessman or whatever.

I know some music theatre people will think this is sacrilege, but I think the movie song "Being in Love" is better than the stage song "My White Knight," which it replaced.

The show is Bright, funny, colorful, memorable songs, delightful characters, great choreography, true to the time period, and I'd like to see anyone try to find an actor to blend so naturally into a character as Robert Preston.

THIS is what classic musical theatre is about. It's funny, it's entertaining, it's even romantic in spots. The songs are outstanding, the community created within the story feels very real, and it's reeeeally hard not to have a good time when performing in this show. Great distribution of stage time between male and female parts. Almost every single character has at least one memorable moment.
