I live in the small town of Petrolia, Ontario, Canada and I am a mother to a wonderful teenage boy (didn't think those words could be typed together...surprise) and wife to a truly supportive and understanding husband, who thankfully doesn't think I'm crazy.

I have always had two profound dreams in life. To fall back hundreds of years in time and live in a simpler world, not bogged down by technology and to write novels. Since only one of these was a possibility I decided to make the other come alive on paper.
I write mm romance novels that take place in fantastical medieval type settings and love to use the challenges of the times to give my stories and characters life.

I loved every minute reading this book. More details down below. No huge spoilers, but still. 😉

I hope the next books in the series continue to be this good!

Re-read 8/2023 via audiobook. Another great narration by Nick J. Russo. He even made Frawley sound less annoying. 😅

"I smiled to myself. So that was it. My use of the word family had lit a fire in Quaid’s core. It made sense. He was a man who dreamed about the future. Someday, I wanted to make all his dreams come true. Marriage, kids, the whole shebang. We hadn’t discussed it, but maybe a kitten was a good launch point. Maybe it would set the ball rolling. I hadn’t told Quaid that I dreamed of those things too, and in my dreams, it was him by my side until we were old and gray."

Thank you Nicky James for getting me out of my miserable reading slump! It took me forever to read this book because all the books I have read lately have taken the joy out of reading for me. Every book I have read in the past few months has been a 3.5-star read at best. I had no desire to read even if it was about Quaid and Aslan, a couple that I have grown to adore. But I pushed myself because of my love for this couple and the way NJ writes.

I loved almost everything about this book. Quaid and Aslan have come a long way since I first began reading about their journey. For them it was hate and lust at first sight, then fuck buddies, then feelings emerged. Quaid and Aslan have shown tremendous growth and character development in the past five books. With Quaid struggling to love and trust someone and Aslan just merely existing letting life pass him by, these two found themselves in each other, and love naturally grew. Nicky James's writing is absolutely mesmerizing. The way she writes romance and the way she writes how much these men desire and love each other was more than I could have asked for as a reader.

It's been 11 months since Quaid and Az have gotten together and their love is felt when you read their story. Quaid, my grumpy king, has been supportive in Az's darkest time. Given what he went through in the last book, I truly feared he might relapse. Az was battling his demons and my heart ached for him. He was broken and I missed the Az that was playful and carefree. But with Quaid by his side, things didn't seem so haunting after all.

I could go on but the romance in this book was everything I had hoped for and more. The sex scenes were fantastic too. Whereas in the past it was mostly sexy, in this book it was pure lovemaking. Well done NJ! As a romance junkie, I couldn't ask for more. You could feel their love even in the sex scenes. That is how much growth these men have gone through. Aslan's growth by far has been the best. In previous books, any mention of a relationship would have him flinch but in this book, he envisions a future with Quaid. He wants forever with him. If that ain't growth, idk what it is. With his handle on his trauma, and vulnerabilities with Torin, Aslan has grown into the man I knew NJ was going to make him out to be. Az and his kitten Oscar were also one of the many things I loved about this book.

The mystery and Quaid's new partner Jordyn were alright but I didn't particularly care for them. I found Jordyn to be annoying. She grew on me eventually but she was a bit extra at times. I missed Quaid's dad, he was MIA this whole book. But idc, this book was still highly enjoyable and I can't wait till the next book! Finally a five-star read, lol.

He tried to free his hand, but I wouldn't let him go and tugged him closer, stealing a kiss. He melted against my mouth, sighing and kissing me back.
"What's this for?" he mumbled, our lips never parting.
"Because I love you."
He found my hand and pressed it over his heart. It was Aslan's wordless way of telling me he loved me too.

while it's not my favorite installment of the mystery aspect, i loved Aslan and Quaid (but this is nothing new🤣) so much. my love for them just keeps growing with each book and, honestly, the progression of their relationship is one of my favorite things about this series. the fact that, while a bit intrigued, i was indifferent towards them in the first book but they managed to steal my heart by the second book and never took it back. 🥺 i'm also glad their relationship just keeps going forward rather than taking steps back bc, at this point, i just want them to be happy. <3

aside from Aslan and Quaid's relationship, the friendship between Aslan and Torin honestly made me cry here bc the guilt Aslan was feeling from the previous book and Torin's persistence in this?? i loved seeing how they worked through it. while Jordyn was okay to me at first, she grew on me by the end and i also loved seeing the progression of her and Quaid trying to get along bc of them being work partners.

THE ENDING THOUGH? 👀

✦ i still love Quaid and Aslan, but i was not a fan of the mystery this time. i was actually bored out of my mind for most of it, hence only the three stars.
✦ absolutely love the relationship between these two. the ending... 🥺
✦ i grew to like Quaid's new partner Jordyn and i am excited to hopefully learn more about her in the next book.
✦ another random thing that definitely bothers me in this series is the amount of focus on Quaid's terrible eating habits.
✦ also, has Quaid's father suddenly just completely disappeared or is it just me lol?

“You might be hard to like, Quaid, but you’re easy to love.” 💛

In this 5th book, Valor and Doyle’s romance continues its slow path to reach the perfect HEA without forgetting to deliver loads of promises of what’s still yet to come-yes, I’m talking about that beautiful, infuriating ending. I loved how this book was about Doyle, and how Valor showed he’s also able to be there for Az when he needs him-i always trusted my boy. While it was my least favorite mystery and, for some reason, I wasn’t fangirling as I did with the others, Valor and Doyle’s stories will continue to be my most anticipated releases for as long as the author continues to bless us with them.

There is something enchanting about series, about the opportunity of meeting again characters you are already in love with, about seeing how they fail and get up stronger than they used to be. Reading Doyle and Valor is starting to feel like Criminal Intentions does; like every new release is a chance to go back home. I loved seeing how Az kept destroying the kitchen every time he tried to cook, how control-freak Quaid gave everything up to see Az smile, how Az always made sure Quaid ate something… And don’t get me started with Oscar. He was the missing piece we didn’t know we needed.

You may be wondering by now what went wrong. My main problem was the mystery. One of the highlights of this series was that, for the first time, I loved the suspense as much as the romance, so it was always a win-win. It may be because I saw it coming or because I didn’t feel the characters were as invested as they were in other cases, but I didn’t really care about what was going to be the outcome. I wasn’t even looking forward to seeing if I was right. The impression I had while I was reading was that it was more focused on Az and the romance than the mystery, which is something that theoretically should have worked better for me because I missed having more Quaid-Az quality time in the last book, but it didn’t. That’s the part where I don’t understand what went wrong. I may not have been in the right mood, college has killed all my joy-hormones or simply there weren’t enough new things to be in awe of, but I didn’t smile and laugh and fangirl as much as I remember doing in the previous books.

Smile or not smile, witnessing all the little moments made me happy and I’m very looking forward to going back to this universe-specially to read that 🥺

“() if I die, I’m going to kill you.”

Az chuckled by my ear and hugged me tighter. “You’re the most precious thing I own. I’ll keep you safe. I promise.”

It was a warm spring day. April would end soon, and May marked an anniversary. Eleven months ago, during a mandatory team building day, I’d stolen my first taste of Quaid. I didn’t know then that one kiss would change my entire life, but it had.

Like everyone else I LOVED the developments in Az & Quaid’s relationship. That ending, GAWD!!! *swoon hard These two really deserve their spot on my fave mc shelf!! Even if I absolutely enjoyed reading these books in the past, I’m so so happy I waited for the audio this time. Nick J. Russo was just worth it.

My fave moments:

Aslan had made us a family
♡ Az and Oscar
♡ Torin, Quaid and the beard war
♡ Ruiz and Quaid banter
♡ sleepy admissions

Overall I liked this instalment a lot. I found the mystery interesting (but not overly exciting) and the banter between the characters entertaining as always. Like many others, I would’ve wished for Quaid’s new partner to be someone else but I also liked that NJ chose to gift him a challenge with this one. I’m also happy to report that this book at least had noteworthy smut in it again. It wasn’t particularly passionate or satisfying (for me, for them I think it was) but much better than in the last two books. So, Thank You NJ! ♡

My rating doesn’t really mirror it but in hindsight no other so far comes close to the love I feel for book #2.

But, and btw, for the first time since this series started I’m blown away by the hotness of the cover model that represents Quaid. 🔥

side note: Because my reading buddy Elisa didn’t write a review herself I want to ask the question she did and which made me think, too (with no answer, obv.): Where has Quaid’s dad gone? They were so tight in previous books but he’s not at all present anymore since the Juniper-case. Does anyone know?

Defying Logic is the latest installment in the Valor and Doyle series. This story picks up a few weeks after the events of the last one, with Aslan trying to recover and move forward after his last case ended so tragically.

I really enjoyed this aspect of the story. PTSD is a serious condition and Az's hesitancy with returning to work was well developed and expressed in an organic way, making this aspect of the story extremely emotional and intense. I also liked how supportive and patient Quaid was throughout this process. He never pushed and allowed Az to heal and recover at a pace he was comfortable with.

Overall this is another great installment in this series. Az and Quaid are amazing together, I love how they each offer such great support and balance to the other. This was another fantastic mystery and I cannot wait for the next one because of all the exciting developments!!

[4.3] don't be surprised if you see my rating criss-crossing, flip-flopping, swip-swapping over the next few days. my reading mood has been off kilter, and i'm also too emotionally preoccupied with Luke's first NHL goal and OT winner being assisted by his big bro Jack - the universe couldn't have scripted it better 😭💖 - to properly digest everything that i read in one hearty gulp.

there is so much to adore about this book, from its balance of heavier themes to the gushing love and support shared between our favorite couple. it came as no surprise that even at his lowest, where nightmares and flashbacks to That Moment plague his mind, Aslan never hesitates to look after Quaid, even messily taking up the torch in the kitchen to keep his man fed.

but of course, what i was most looking forward to and notably adored was more of Quaid supporting Aslan. the gentle nudges. the worried gaze tracking Aslan’s every movement, no matter how subtle. the constant reminders of love. we know just how much Quaid has an issue with relinquishing control, so when he readily puts Aslan above his habitual need to maintain certain standards and shoves aside his own personal comfort, i’m filled with the most banal yet heartwarming image of what true love is: the small sacrifices you don’t think twice about making for your special person. can you blame me for greedily requesting more pages dedicated to this side of their relationship? their way of exchanging ilys struck my inner romantic like thunderclaps reverberating throughout my entire body. i love them so much, and there is no doubt in my mind that they're as solid as an oak tree.

special shout-out to Torin and Ruiz for protecting their status as the bestest bros. the friendship dynamics with Ruiz have evolved into something beautiful, and his and Quaid’s conversations gave me some much-needed chuckles!

5 STARS!!!

I can’t tell you how much I adore these two!! In book 1, Aslan and Quaid despised each other but they sure have come a long way. It has a bumpy road in this one with Aslan recovering from what happened in book 4, but Quaid is there at every moment with love and support. Quaid is also struggling with a new partner, which is throwing off his orderly world. Aslan is there to help Quaid realize what’s really happening.

As far as the mystery, it was a doozy. I thought I had it all figured out, and I did, in one aspect. But I was way off until the end with the other. It definitely had a few twists and turns that I did not see coming.

Of course the audiobook was fantastic and I can’t wait until book 6. Although, maybe I can since it will be the final book for this series and I’m sad since these two are one of my favorite couples EVER!!!

I didn't like the mystery here as much. I am also not a fan of Valor's new partner. Valor may be prickly, but Frawly is hella defensive and rude.

I didn't understand why Doyle struggled with killing Columbus to the point he couldn't hold a gun. Yes, Columbus was 12, but that kid was pure, unadulterated evil. Doyle did the world a favor killing that sick fuck.

The relationship between the men is a thing of beauty. Valor doesn't even yell at Doyle for trashing the kitchen! Now that's true love.

"When we came apart, the look in his eyes almost undid me. It was raw, undiluted love.
I took his face between my hands. “I’m serious. You’re beautiful. Inside and out. You have no idea what you do to me. You have no idea how thankful I am that you’ve been by my side every day through this.” His eyes shimmered. “We’re a team.”
“Yeah, we are.”

Yes babys, weeee are a team😭😭💞💞

I finished the book with a smile on my face, and screaming YES YES YES YESSSS because omg, i loveeee this guys. 😭💞
If I'm honest, the mystery didn't interest me that much, but i loved every interaction between Az and Q. I am very happy that Az was able to work on his problem, although i would have liked to see a little chat with the psychologist, but that's fine. My baby is better now💕💕

DYING FOR THE NEXT ONEEEE 😭😭💞

Very difficult to rate, that’s why I’ll split it in different parts.

The Mystery-3 stars

Call me spoiled, but I’m a bit disappointed here. The previous mysteries were so gripping, I literally sat on the edge of my seat chewing my nails, almost dreading what’s about to happen. Here… No idea. I didn’t really care about it. I kind of guessed pretty early who’s behind it, even if I didn’t know the big picture yet, and it frustrated me how both Quaid and Az didn’t see it until almost the very end.

The Secondary Characters - 5 stars

This part comes as a surprise, because Quaid’s new partner annoyed me so much at the beginning, but the author really managed to make me love her, and I loved how Quaid worked hard to find a way to communicate with her. I think she might become one of my favourite characters in this series! Tores and Ruiz are ❤️ And did I mention Oscar? Oscar must be THE cutest kitten out there 🥰

The Relationship - 5+++ stars

So good, guys. Those two and their love and understanding of each other are everything. The way Quaid helped Az through his trauma, and how Az always looks after Quaid when it comes to eating. My heart melted every time, and I’m so much looking forward to the next book after the ending we got ❤️💍

The Narration - 5++++ stars. At least.

I started reading it on KU, but quickly realised that I missed NJR‘s voice and the emotions and layers he adds to the story. And I’m happy I put the eBook to the side and waited for the audiobook, because it was SO GOOD. SO SO GOOD.

So it won’t come as a surprise that I’ll definitely recommend listening to it if you’re into audiobooks.

Overall a solid 4.5 stars, rounded down this time because i loved the other books more. Pity the mystery was a bit lacklustre.

4.5 stars for the book
5 stars for the audio

Gahhh this was so so good.

I am LOVING these two men and their realistic relationship.
Their perfect banter, the way they take care of each other, the way they show their love... so so good.

This case was also enjoyable although I did have an idea who the culprit was. It was fun to see the case unfold and to experience these two men work with each other.

Highly enjoying Ruise and his part in the books. His friendship with Quaid is so cute.

All in all, another winner from NJ.

And as always, the audiobook was perfection by Nick J Russo. He really IS Valor and Doyle.

You’re the most precious thing I own. I’ll keep you safe. I promise.”
I pulled from his hold and mock-sneered. “You don’t own me, Doyle.”
He winked and fit his helmet over his head. “That’s what you think, hot stuff. You’re mine.”

I liked this installment in the series a lot. The mystery was interesting and far from obvious (at least for me) and I liked how it served as a backdrop to Quaid’s and, to a lesser degree, to Aslan’s after the events of the previous book.
Aslan is understandably struggling in this book, it would’ve been weird if he wasn’t, and that obviously reflects on Quaid and their relationship. I think it was handled very well, it felt realistic without being too depressing, it struck the right balance and I loved seeing how well they’ve learned to deal with very stressful situations despite the relatively short time of their relationship.
The addition of It’s at times like these that I feel the absence of my buddy read friends when I’m reading a book by myself. I kept thinking of things I wanted to comment on while I was reading, and I would’ve liked an informed opinion on the accuracy of the representation. 😂
Another winner for this series and the next one seems very promising, if that ending is any indication.

4 stars!! Loved the romance and growth 🥰but did not like the mystery.. 🤷‍♀️
So what I loved; was how the relationship has grown, both Quaid and Aslan are behaving in a matured manner. Aslan battling his inner demons day after day and Quaid’s unflinching support and love throughout… that was wonderful to see. Also the passion and intimacy was both emotional and sensual.. 🔥❤️ Loved that!
What I didn’t like; was the mystery.. it was lackluster and dull. Not that I need the police case to always have personal connection to either of the MCs; but I would prefer something high stakes at this point (book 5) 🙄; doesn’t have to be a murder but political intrigue or missing witness or such.. 🤔 this was just meh 🤷‍♀️ It was obvious to me who the main perpetrator was..
What I hated; Frawley!! What a brat!! 😬 Couldn’t stand her..
Last but not the least; overall still enjoyed the book; there was romance and passion on the page despite the PTSD and other angst. Highly recommended to all fans of the series 👍🏻👍🏻

Another amazing mystery solved! I'm obsessed with this series, it's so freaking good!! I couldn't wait for this book after the last one since it ended with Aslan mental state so up in the air. Nicky is an incredible writer, not only does she makes the scenes come to life, but she makes you feel as if it's real. She definitely keeps me on my toes with these mysteries, I'm always unsure until the very end. I had suspicions, but she knows how to keep you guessing. At 81% I thought I figured it out, but there were still so many surprises that unfolded. I could really feel Aslan's struggles with his PTSD, I could have just cried for him. I also could really feel Aslan and Quaid's love, they're legit couple goals and only getting stronger with each book. I'll never get tired of their hilarious banter, they crack me up! I also enjoyed more of Quaid and Ruiz's budding friendship as well as Quaid finding balance with his new partner. I absolutely cannot wait for the next installment of the series, especially after the last scene, swooning!

If Book 4, Inevitable Disclosure, had less focus on romance and more on the case, Book 5 is the opposite. Of all the books so far, this has the most tender moments, which actually transformed me into goo on multiple occasions. It centered on the couple's relationship growth and how they propped up each other, showing vulnerability, giving relentless support, and fighting each other's battles together. Az' struggles were a bit harder to read this time because of the additional guilt and I felt Quaid's hurt in lacking friends and his challenges in fitting in. It teared me up on some parts and I loved them more with this development.

The new partner was initially grating on the nerves so, props to the author for inciting that negative feeling. And let's not forget how funny and likeable Ruiz is in this book. I soaked up every encounter and banter. Quaid's friendship with him is absolutely adorable and now he's clearly friends with Az, too. ❤

The case, as always, is complex and puzzling but the root cause easily became evident sooner than usual. It's okay though. Still convoluted but considered a relief after what they've gone through previously.

Of course, from the last book's title, we already have a clue about the next step in their relationship but that last bit about living with each other for a very, very long time was very heartwarming.

Quite a ways until release but I'm looking forward to the last book! ❤

These guys are just too cute. I love how supportive they are of each other, and how their relationship just goes from strength to strength.

I'm loving seeing Quaid learning how to work with a new partner, as well as his friendship with Ruiz getting more solid. I also enjoyed seeing Aslan be the more vulnerable partner and how Quaid supports him through the aftermath of the last book.

The kitten and Aslan calling them a family gave me the biggest smile, probably as big as Quaid's was! I'm so here for their relationship and I am so excited to read the next book so I am now impatiently waiting for it to get here.

Again I didn't figure out the crime and this is possibly my favourite crime romance series now because other than book one I have literally not had a clue on who's responsible for any of the crimes, so my attention is always held from start to finish.

It's now official, Quaid and Aslan are currently my favorite couple in contemporary romance. This book is all about them and also about their interaction with their friends, Quaid's new partner and their cute house companion. All of that was on a feel-good/ hurt-comfort level I thoroughly enjoyed but alas their case this time seemed too fabricated, brilliantly fabricated but fabricated nonetheless and of course defying logic.

The 5th book in the Valor&Doyle series and even though this series is still one of the best, I think it's good that the author is taking a break from writing the rest of the series. Even though this book was still a 4* read for me, it was my least favorite of the series, for several reasons.

What I loved:
- The development of Quaid's and Aslan's relationship. It's going to the next level of trust and love and I have confidence that they can make it through any rough time now they were able to get Aslan through the rough period of PTSD since he had to kill Columbus
- I loved how patient Quaid was and knew when to leave Aslan alone and when to push a little.
- I loved Aslan and his bike rides, how it cleared his head, and how he loved to take Quaid.
- As always, the banter and the lovable remarks.
- Quaid's new partner, even though she had to grow on me. It took some time, but in the end I can't see why they wouldn't work. She's a great addition to the story, I think.
- The side characters (though I did miss Quaid's father Abraham in this story)

The things I enjoyed less:
- I get that Quaid and Aslan have a desire to grow their family, but as I'm not too fond of kids in books, I'm equally not too fond of animals that take the stage a little too often. So I'm sorry to be the odd one here, but I didn't really need the cat added to the story.
- The mystery didn't put me on the edge of my seat like the previous ones did.

So, that's why I rated 4* instead of 5.
Still, it's a great series and Valor&Doyle are still among my favorite mm romance couples!

I kindly received an advanced copy from the author and this is my honest review

I am just fully in love with Quaid and Aslan. Wowza. This book is full of incredible relationship moments and it was so nice to see Quaid in the supportive role this time after Aslan’s incident. There was actually three moments in the book (and one in the last book) that I got punched in the face by my own tears because they were just SO SWEET AND IN LOVE!!!!

I read “Relative Commotion” before this, a short story only available through Nicky James’ newsletter, and that plus what we see in this, I just need to say I agree with Aslan about thinking his sister’s husband sucks.

I liked the mystery a lot too, I knew it had to be something stupidly dramatic and it was. I don’t read a lot of mysteries so I’m not too picky here.

Aslan telling Quaid he’s hard to like but easy to love will forever live in my heart. I am not one to highlight in my kindle or leave myself notes, but I certainly highlighted that speech AND left a note saying “literally kill me.”

My husband and I are having a good time laughing at how much I relate to Quaid as well. It’s fun to read about someone with similar tendencies.

I've given this an A at AAR.

Detectives Valor and Doyle are back in Defying Logic, the fifth book in Nicky James’ series of clever, suspenseful and consistently engrossing romantic mysteries set in Toronto. Five books in, and the two leads are as captivating as ever, they’re still growing as characters and their relationship continues to evolve in a most satisfactory way. In addition, Defying Logic boasts possibly the most complex, convoluted mystery of the series so far, and Quaid has to deal with an unwanted upheaval in his working life while Aslan is struggling in the wake of the traumatic events that took place at the end of Inevitable Disclosure

Note: While the mysteries in this series are self-contained, the central relationship is ongoing and there are references to previous events in this story; as a result, there are spoilers in this review.

It’s been two months since Aslan was forced to shoot and kill Columbus Nottingham, the twelve-year-old boy who murdered his own sister and then threatened the life of Aslan’s partner Torin. Rationally, he knows he had no choice but to do what he did, but emotionally? He questions his decision every day. Aslan has been cleared to return to work, but the minute he was faced with having to pick up his service weapon, he just couldn’t do it, the scenes he’s fought so hard to forget overwhelming him and causing him to bolt. Carrying a gun and being prepared to use it if necessary is part of being a cop, which is all Aslan has ever wanted to be, but now? He misses the job, misses his partner, misses the intensity of working a case, the thrill of solving puzzles and digging for answers – but what if he can never pick up a gun again?

Quaid knows Aslan is living on a knife-edge, battling for his sobriety and perhaps even his sanity – but he also knows that the only thing he can do is be there to love and support him through it. Still, it’s hard for him to watch the man he loves going through such agony and not be able to do more.

And Quaid has problems of his own. After his long-time partner had to step back to care for her sick daughter, he’s been assigned a rookie detective by the name of Jordyn Frawley – and things are not going well. Even though he knew he couldn’t continue to work alone, Quaid was dreading starting all over again with someone new; he likes stability and doesn’t handle change well, he knows he can be difficult and isn’t easy to like, and had achieved a level of comfort and trust with Eden that took a lot of work. His boss assigned Frawley to him because he thought they were two of a kind, but Quaid has no idea what he can have been thinking because he and Frawley are nothing alike. She’s standoffish and prickly and quick to take offense – and no matter what, Quaid can’t seem to do anything right.

His latest case, that of Duncan Lynd, an active, healthy eighty-two-year-old man who has been missing for over a week, has reached a series of frustrating dead-ends, leaving Quaid with no alternative but the one he really hates – to call off the search. There’s nothing to suggest foul play, the press conferences and neighbour and family interviews have yielded nothing – Lynd has just disappeared without a trace, leaving Quaid – and Frawley – no alternative but to move on to their next case.

This happens to be that of Holly Bartlett, a twenty-six-year-old dental student currently on a clinical rotation at a local clinic, and who hasn’t turned up for work since the end of the previous week. Quaid and Frawley quickly establish that Holly has a reputation for being somewhat absent-minded, and that this isn’t the first time something like this has happened – “She’s one of those super smart people who are so absentminded they can’t remember what day of the week it is.”

They start by speaking to people who knew Holly, taking a look around her apartment – and something begins to niggle at the back of Quaid’s mind. It takes him a while to work out what it is, then he remembers the numbers stamped into the wooden surface of Holly’s front door – and that there were another (different) three stamped on the front door of Duncan Lynd’s house. Quaid has no idea what the numbers mean, but this finding defintely suggests that perhaps their disappearances may be related. Then when another set of numbers is found, this time at the home of a sixteen-year-old girl who has gone missing, Quaid is certain there’s a connection between the three victims. But they’re all so different – the octogenarian, the absent-minded twentysomething and the brilliant teen – that it’s hard to see what that connection could be.

As I said at the outset, the mystery is a complicated one, and it certainly lives up to the book’s title! It’s intricate and clever, with lots of twists, turns and red herrings; the people Quaid and Frawley have to deal with clearly have things to hide and are only too willing to throw others under the bus so they can keep their secrets. I had my suspicions as to who the culprit was at various points throughout, but those suspicions kept changing, and in the end, I wasn’t completely sure whodunit right up until the reveal.

Knowing how much Aslan needs a distraction, Quaid brings him in (unofficially) to help out with a bit of grunt work, but is careful to make sure no lines are crossed. I’ve said before that I really appreciate that Ms. James clearly gives a lot of thought as to how she can have them working together plausibly rather than just teaming them up to solve every case regardless of their having different partners and belonging to different departments. I was pleased to see more of IT expert Ruiz and his growing friendship with Quaid; it’s good to see Quaid unbending with someone besides Aslan, and I enjoyed their good-natured teasing. Also much appreciated was getting to check in on Torin to see how he’s handling the aftermath of what happened; he’s got a lot to process, too, and he’s doing it without Aslan, who is probably the only person around who can really understand what he’s going through. I was glad when Quaid told Aslan to get his head out of his arse and stop ignoring Torin’s calls, pointing out that he’s struggling, too, and could do with some support. Watching Quaid struggling to connect with Frawley is tough, and her glacier-level of frostiness at the beginning makes her hard to like, but the author also makes it easy to see where she’s coming from – which doesn’t quite cancel out the dislike, but does mitigate it somewhat. Progression is made, however, and by the end of the book, it seems that maybe things will work out – although it’s not going to be an easy road.

As a couple, Quaid and Aslan are more solid than ever. Quaid is much more confident in Aslan’s feelings for him and he’s one hundred percent there for Aslan, knowing when to push and when not to, realising what he needs and doing his best to meet them. (And yes, sometimes they’re sexy needs :P) And Aslan looks after Quaid in so many ways that show how he feels, taking him his favourite foods (even though Aslan hates them) when he forgets to eat, trying to cater for his picky eating habits at home (even though it means the kitchen looks like a war zone afterwards). They know how different they are, but they’ve learned to make room for each other’s habits and idiosyncracies so now, they just… fit.

I can’t finish this review without mentioning the newest member of the Valor-Doyle family – Oscar, the six-week-old kitten Aslan adopts. Quaid is, of course, a bit nervous about this new development but soon, he’s as much of a big softie over him as Aslan is. Which is exactly as it should be because – KITTEN!

Defying Logic combines an excellent mystery that will keep you guessing, with romance, humour, poignancy, tenderness, and lots of character growth. (And a cute kitten!) And there’s more good news for series fans – the author has said there are at least two more Valor and Doyle books to come! While we wait for those, however, there’s this latest terrific instalment to enjoy.

My favorite book in the series so far.
I loved that the story had so many Aslan and Quaid moments together, with no grand gestures, but lot's of every day interactions and taking care of each other, those small things that are what true love is about. Loved that it was finally Quaid's turn to take care of Aslan, be there for him in the aftermath of the shooting trauma, support him and believe in him. He even agreed to ride a motorcycle 😀
The mystery storyline was engaging and not overwhelming, nothing like the heavy one from the last book. And that's exactly what I needed.
Other highlights: Quaid's new partner, Quaid and Ruiz friendship, and how far they came from the first book, the kitten 😍

Rollercoaster of emotions and even though I didn't care about the mystery, the moments!!!!! GOD YISUS!!!!!

I just remember their moments together, the things they said to each other and the fucking cat! GOD LORD MY OVARIES EXPLODED, don't ask me why, I don't fucking know. The vulnerability, I couldn't!!

On to other subjects, yes, I didn't really liked the mystery, but I think the book was 30% that, so I could ignore it.

I didn't like Frawley at first either, so there is that. Aslan's partner was another story 🤣🤣

But ma boys!!! Ugh!

TBH I was scared of this book. I was scared for Aslan and scared for the relationship. I was sure Az will not be able to resist the urges and the relationship will suffer from the fallout of his addiction.
I was surprised to see how he handled the tragedy and how amazing Quiad was.
I love some angst but hate lies so I feel this book gave me exactly what I needed and hoped for.
One thing I think was being dealt too lightly is that IMO Quiad have ED and this is an important issue that needs to get a closer look here.
