Aletha Solter, Ph.D. is a Swiss/American developmental psychologist, parenting consultant, and director of the Aware Parenting Institute. She holds a Master's degree in human biology from the University of Geneva, Switzerland (where she studied with Dr. Jean Piaget), and a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
When Aletha's first child was born in 1977 (following a traumatic birth) she did not find any parenting books that advocated attachment-style parenting and non-punitive discipline while taking into account the impact of stress and trauma on children's development.
The first book she wrote, The Aware Baby (revised in 2001), is the one that she would have found helpful as a new mother. The Aware Baby has been translated into many languages and sold over 200,000 copies worldwide. Her five other books have also been translated into many languages. All of her books are based on scientific research.
Aletha has led workshops for parents and professionals in 17 countries and is recognized internationally as an expert on attachment, trauma, and non-punitive discipline. She has appeared on TV in the U.S., Europe, South Africa, and Asia. She lives in Southern California and is the mother of two grown children. She is also a proud grandmother.

Slim volume (less than 200 pages) that is so practical! Her insights about why it's so important to allow kids to play role-reversal games with you (where they get to be "in charge") and how to do that with them are worth reading the book for.
Aletha Solter’in kitaplarinin çok iyi oldugu artik kabul edilen birsey. Ama bu kitap çok baskaydi benim icin. Oncelikle okumasi cok kolay bir kitap. Insan durup dusunmek icin zaman yaratmak istiyor. Kitaba gelicek olursak, oyun oynamanin asla zaman kaybi olmadigi ve iyilestirici etkisini oyle guzel anlatmiski cocugunuzla oynadiginiz oyunlarin altinda yatan nedenleri irdelemenizi sagliyor. Sizin icin cok basit olan yastik savasinda neleri kazandiginizi bilseniz sizde benim kadar etkilenirdiniz eminim. Cocugunuzla oynadiginiz gucun cocukta oldugu oyunlarda kahkaha atmasinin iyilestirici etkisinin oldugunu bilerek oynamak paha bicilemez. Mutlaka her annenin kutuphanesinde olmasi gereken bir kitap. Kisaca okuyun ve okutturun 💕
Aletha Solter'in tüm kitapları muhteşem.
This book has really changed how I play with my children. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to parent and love their kids more effectively! This book reminds me of the Five Love Languages idea, that people have different ways that they perceive love, and it helps to be intentional about using another person's love language for them. Playing with kids is like a love language for them, and this book lays out how to meet each child's individual needs.
The author sometimes uses a bossy tone of voice that made me want to put it down, and unrealistic advice such as obtaining childcare for other children while you play with one child alone. Just ignore those parts, because for the most part the book is packed with practical instruction, helpful examples, and ways to apply the ideas.
A really interesting approach. I wish I had this book when my kids were younger. The idea of using play and humor is one that really appeals to me. Also, the idea of allowing kids to cry and supporting them through the tears (rather than saying, "Don't cry!") is one that resonates with me. They're crying for a reason and it's better to get those emotions out. There definitely are a few ideas in this book that I'll try out.
A seminal book, a sort of intro to parenting, with a set of clear-cut approaches to some basic issues you might encounter with kids of different age. P.S.: Research/studies references are at the end :)
This has to be one of the most illuminating ECE books I've read, and I wish it was required reading in our early training. We hear over and over that young children process and learn through play, but it doesn't seem to go much deeper than that. This book goes over different types of play and extremely practical applications for each type. It even has a whole section that covers common childhood struggles and provides parents and caregivers with appropriate play avenues that could help release a child's tension. And that's one of this book's strongest themes--anxiety, trauma, especially for young children, is stored in the body as tension and needs to be released, and often the way to do so is through meaningful laughter. In order to be effective, this laughter should be coupled with some reminder of the stress/trauma, so the child is able to subconsciously connect the event to something more joyful. I'm so thankful I read this book. I've already found myself in situations with my students where I could have gotten annoyed or upset, but have instead turned to exaggerative nonsense play, or symbolic play with applicable themes, or power-reversal play that gives them the chance to be in control when they feel out of control. I can't wait to try more of these strategies to help the children I serve grow to be their best joyous selves, and I'm excited to read more from Dr. Solter!
Petit bijou !
Sometimes a bit touchy feely and promoting strategies that I haven't really found myself being too successful in applying - could be my bad. But overall an interesting book. Skipped a couple of chapters, because they were not relevant to my situation/age of kids. But I might come back later for specific tips. Not my favorite parenting book, but still a useful read.
I really enjoyed this book and found it extremely helpful for parenting in a pandemic, particularly with my little one who expresses herself beautifully through play.
