Great writing! I kind of got a Twilight vibe off of this story except better writing and characters that you can relate to. And OMG the cringe-worthy moments!! Bree in Issy's closet and Bree's bedroom with Aiden!! I was embarrassed reading those parts, but they were too awesome not to continue!
I found Bree to seem mature at times and then a bit on the childish side (Rocky and Bullwinkle). But who wouldn't in her situation.
Also I loved Issy's personality. Who wouldn't want a wingman like Issy? He's totally non-judgmental and completely honest which was funny.
And last but not least, I liked the fact that although Aiden tried to hurt himself, that insecurity was always there. Sometimes issues like that are swept under the rug.
I received this book free of charge from the author, in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Mr. Solter! Both for allowing me the privilege of reading the book and for actually writing this book. I must say, after reading the first paragraph I was prepared to dislike the book. It is written in the first person style that I usually abhor. IMHO it takes a really good author to pull off a successful first person story, even some great authors have failed at this, but Mr. Solter not only pulled it off, he excelled. Then halfway through when the book changed from Aiden's perspective to Bree's perspective I groaned again, only to be proven wrong. Bravo!! Definitely a 5 star book! Excellent characters, I was made to feel that I knew them personally. Very likable. The plot was good. The book described the traumas that a lot of teens have to survive (or not) in their high school years without being morbid. Yes, more teens have problems like this than most people realize. Very likable characters with good sense of humor. Even the villains were interesting and I anticipate finding out more about them in the next book. I am truly puzzled and intrigued about the hows, wheres and whys that I hope Mr. Solter will be revealing soon. I won't go into a book report type of review and describe that actual story line, as you can find that on many reviews already. Although classified as a YA read, this mature adult recommends it for all ages. I certainly hope Mr. Solter will be writing more about Aiden, Issy and Bree. I will be purchasing the next book(s) for my home library!
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book. Would a get a cute read about werewolves...or would it be something completely different? Yeah, I got something completely different. Although the cover portrays a cartoonish girl, the story comes off as anything but. There was a dark side that focused a lot on suicide and the attempts to ends one’s life. But I found the little bit of humor and the paranormal aspect balanced it all out.
Oh yes, there was some humor. Issy was a riot that always had something to say to make you laugh. He was such a mess but I enjoyed him so much. But at the end he became more serious and it was justified. Which it leads me to my next concern....
I felt Aiden wasn't listening to his friend and his concerns with Bree. Issy felt she was a threat and rightly so. But I believe Aiden was letting his love for her cloud his judgment. He really needed to take a step back and look at the whole picture.
Well done Solter for giving us another great read (in a whole different genre than SKID) that kept me entertained and my interest held. Will this be a series? Solter definitely left the ending open without it feeling like there was no closure. So I guess we will just have to wait and see because anything is possible.
**I was given a free copy of this book by the author for an honest review.**
I had the pleasure of reading "Skid" by the same author previously and was happy to read and review another book for him. I was not disappointed! "My Girlfriend Bites" was definitely a little over the top in some parts but it really was a well written and entertaining read! The characters and their relationships were well developed. I got to know the characters and have sympathy for their various situations. The romance between Aiden and Bree was hard to imagine, but the author did a great job of making you imagine it to the point of it didn't seem as weird as it actually was. I liked reading this during Halloween week, but that just made it a little more perfect for this time of year. I am hoping to get to read more about Aiden and Bree in another book...hint hint Doug! Also, some reviewers mentioned "Twilight" in their reviews and this never made me think of those books as I read it, and I read them all! Read the description and decide for yourself but you will not be disappointed in this book!
I recieved a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. My Girlfriend Bites offers a unique storyline. Yes - it's about a werewolf/human relationship but it is more than that. Aiden, the "hero" for lack of a better word - is quite damaged. His lack of self-worth and cowardice doesn't make him endearing - far from it. (Without giving too much away, its hard to like someone who leaves his best friend in a perilous time) But, this is where the author shines - he takes a less than likeable character on a journey to where he becomes the hero. Solter did a great job weaving several plotlines into a cohesive story. He touches on the sensitive subjects of suicide and abuse. There were moments in the beginning of the story that I thought "Great...teenage boy humor..." But as the story unfolds, it reveals a much more touching tale than I had anticipated.
An exciting, imaginative adventure with some surprising twists. I loved Bree, the weregirl. She’s a well-rounded character that avoids the usual werewolf cliches.
3.5 stars. Quick read and enjoyable though a little troubling at times. Not just a fun, easy read, it had some serious topics that were brought up though maybe not resolved or handled well.
Likes: * Aiden, though I don't really know why, he's flawed but stepped up * Issy, total male chauvanistic, objectifying women, but he was a loyal wingman to Aiden and supported his friend's unconventional romance * Bree, Cave Girl turned dream girl, at least for Aiden * Star Wars and Star Trek references
Dislikes: * Wild teen parties and behavior * Constantly driving without a license
With-reservations: suicide, bullying, violence, attempted murder, prejudice, alcoholism, child abuse, underage drinking, weed, nudity, sexual innuendos, driving without a license, colorful teenage language
I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side. Firstly I would like to thank Doug Solter, author of My Girlfriend Bites, for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this book. I really liked this story. Here we meet Aiden who is depressed because of a girl rejects him and he tries to commit suicide (one of the things that I didn’t like at all) but he survives mysteriously. Then we meet Bree who is a werewolf and after spending time together they fall in love. Bree discloses her secret but Aiden didn’t leave her and supported her. Does it remind you of some other story? Well in my case, it certainly does. Replace Edward Cullen with Bree and Bella Swan with Aiden and you’ll get the basic storyline of this book. But still I would like to say that I enjoyed this book. Now, why? That is because, other than this basic similarity, the book is completely different than Twilight. One of the most great and realistic concept is that you don’t turn up into a werewolf if one bites you. I like that! The evil Demon Skins and their quest of hunting down werewolf clans really spiced up the read for me. The cute yet passionate romance between Bree and Aiden also did a great job in making the story a intriguing one. Well I shouldn’t say so, but there is a silly reason why I loved this story, that is in this one the girl has got the power and saves the guy’s ass. That’s good to read, girl power! The writing style is comfy and I quickly got attached with the book and its characters. Though the concept seemed to be quite matching with Twilight but the author pulled it up quite well with unexpected twists and turns lurking here and there and the author also highlighted the emotional breakdown of the characters and explained it in a descriptive language that made it even more visual. The action scenes are great and I loved the crisp and clear dialogues. The small but effective humour scenes enlightened the mood. Over all a good read and would recommend it to ya all. Go for it and enjoy, hope that you guys will love it.
My Girlfriend Bites, by Doug Solter - I received this as a Goodreads First Read Book.
"My Girlfriend Bites" did lag a little in some parts but it is a really well written and entertaining story. The characters and their relationships were well developed and is mainly a romance story with paranormal elements thrown in. I got to know the characters and have empathy for their various situations and backgrounds.
Aideen Jay, the ‘boyfriend’ reminded me a little in concept to Thomas Covenant, Stephenson’s cowardly anti-hero from his Thomas Covenant series. Bree was a good strong foil to Aideen (though I got tired of her saying ‘Super’ all the time.)
I did like the fact that Solter created a realistic and believable background and culture/community for his werewolves. And I like the idea behind the main antagonists and would have liked to have found out more about these ‘demon skins’. I hope any future book in the series goes towards finding out more about these creatures and who (or what) created them.
This book also reminded me about how horrible kids can be to each other in High School. Only taking each other at surface value and only thinking in the moment with no thought on future consequences to themselves or others. I am glad that the real world is not wholly reflected in the microcosm of High School, and that some of the shallow characters in this book find out more about the person behind the stereotype e.g. Pamela and Issy.
I am hoping to get to read more about Aiden and Bree in another book – the ending of the story did look set up for another book and as I mentioned above there are some story lines that could do with some tidying up and another book in the series would do this nicely...
I would recommend this book to lovers of werewolf stories and teen Paranormal Romance junkies (like me :))
This review first appeared on Books i View / I received a copy of this book for an honest review.
My Girlfriend Bites is not just another werewolf book! It is a mix of paranormal and romance with serious subjects such as suicide and bullying but still manages to be a light and humorous read.
What I loved:
I loved all the Star Wars references within this book. The opening scene where Aiden is trying to ask a girl out and compares it to the Death Star blowing up is my favorite!
The conversations between Aiden and Issy are hilarious! I absolutely loved them together as best friends!
There was a unique teen vibe going on with the writing style. It felt natural and real. The teenagers actually acted and talked like real teenagers with flaws and all.
What I didn’t like:
Aiden was too much of a wimpy character. There were so many times when I just wanted to yell “man up!” to him. It took him a long while for him to work up his courage but ultimately he does.
Multiple points of view. Normally I like this but in this book it starts out with Aiden’s perspective and then 30% in, out of the blue, it changes to Bree’s perspective, which threw me through a loop. I felt it was unnecessary for the story.
Loose ends. I don’t want to give anything away, but the issue Issy has with Bree and Aiden being together, yeah well that was not solved at all!
Overall:
I really liked that it was humorous take on the paranormal werewolf genre with normal teen issues. It was definitely interesting to read and different from other werewolf books that I’ve read. Though it did have a few annoyances for me it kept me entertained and reading until the end. I do hope that Doug Solter decides to continue this story with a sequel as I feel there is a lot more to be told and would be happy to read!
"I received this book free of charge from the author, in exchange for an honest review."
I would like to thank the author, Doug Solter, for the chance to read his book. Let's just say I really enjoyed his unique twist with this werewolf book.
I wasn't sure at first when it started out with the main character Aiden trying to commit suicide but it really helped you understand this main character and all his complex emotions. Enter Bree, and she's a really strong female character who happens to be a werewolf. The romance was really intense but I enjoyed how it wasn't all this book was about. There is always so much going on that this book just draws you in from the beginning. Lots of romance mixed with serious problems all why dealing with normal high school issues. Very enjoyable read and I highly recommend it for those who are into more than just romance. This book has it all!!
I wanted to read a new book, and it is with an author that I never read before MY GIRLFRIEND BITES by Doug Solter. This is a story about a first love, and telling that person that you really like them. But when the person doesn't return your feeling, you feel lost. That is what happens to Aiden, who wanted to be with the most popular girl in school. She laughs at him. Than he decides that he has nothing to live for. Because he is in this depress state he does the unthinkable. The best part of this story is that he fails at his quest to end his life. Then he meets a girl name Bree, whom he falls in love with. But there is just one problem she is a werewolf...I will stop right here because you need to read this book for yourself. I enjoyed this book, because I couldn't put this book down until the end.
When Aiden has been living in a very dark place for long time, then finally builds up the courage to tell the most beautiful girl in school how he feels about her and she laughs in his face. It's no wonder why Aiden tries to hang himself in the woods. His suicide attempt was squashed by a stranger who brought him to the hospital. Aiden and his best friend, Issy (Ishmal for short) are not what you call popular, but they have each other. Cave Girl, aka Bree, is a quiet yet weird girl, who tends to grunt and growl in school, hence the nickname. Aiden and Bree start a friendship, which quickly turns into love. But, this is no normal love story. Especially when the girl and her family are werewolves being hunted by an indestructible foe. Will Aiden be good enough for Bree? Will Bree hurt/kill Aiden or any of her human friends? This is a great book!
I received this book for free through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. This book was really good, it was a new take on warewolfs that I've never read before. I really liked Aidens character and his best friend Issy they were so funny I just loved them so much. Although I didn't quite like how things ended between them, and also the fact that we didn't get to understand much about the Demon Skins and where they came from but hopefully there will be a second book? I also liked Bree and how she was always the one coming to the rescue for the guy as opposed to the more common guy coming to rescue the girl. I want to thank Doug Solter the author for giving me the opportunity to read and review this amazing book!
I received a copy of this e-book in exchange for an honest review. I truly enjoyed this book! I wanted something different, and I got it. This book has so many stories to tell, wrapped up in one. There is a sweet first love story, as well as summaries mention of attempted suicide all stemming from bulling, and emotional as well as physical abuse. The characters make you feel like you know them. It is as if you have climbed into Aiden's life. Sometimes it is scary, and sometimes it is the wonderful feeling of first love. Bree's part of this story is so innocent yet ferocious. I hope you take the time to read this book it is a great read. I hope that we will learn more about Aiden and Bree.
This was a really good book. It wasn't cheesey like a lot of YA paranormal books are these days where everything out of the male leads mouth is like sweet poetry and he has the body of a god. The dialogue was appropriate and my favorite part was the teenagers actually acted like teenagers sweet but flawed and still trying to figure themselves out while doing normal teenage things like getting there first car and going to the mall. There was some romance, drama, suspense, action, and it left room for a possible sequel. which I Hope There Will Be.
My Girlfriend Bites started off as a bit of a high school romp but quickly shifted (no pun) into a paranormal romance. I was pleasantly surprised when the author upped the stakes and turned this story into the Hero's Journey, filled with nasty bad guys, (both human as well as paranormal) action-adventure galore with twists and turns. An enjoyable read! I'd recommend this to both girl and guy readers.
First of all I'd like to state I really enjoyed reading My Girlfriend Bites and about the two main characters Aiden and Bree. From beginning to end there wasn't a dull moment in this fantastic book. Near the end I thought I would be let down by certain things happening between the two main characters, but as this book wrapped up, it all got settled nicely. Five stars for an interesting story and while I was looking at this on Amazon.com I downloaded Skid by the same author.
I rewarded this 3 stars because I didn't really enjoy it as much as I'd expected. My main problem with this book was just the storyline, it wasn't particularly unique so I didn't feel like reading it. I did find some positives in this though, such as the humorous dialogue, that's used quite frequently throughout the book. This wasn't a totally awful book, it was just an average read! :)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A fabulous paranormal with a twist. Instead of the guy being the hero, Aiden is weak and cowardly. His girlfriend, Bree, is full of life and courageous, not to mention a werewolf. They are both just trying to fit in and get through high school. My first read by Doug Solter. 5 stars!
I would like yo thank the author Mr. Doug Solter for giving me the opportunity to read this adventurous book! I loved the story and the amazing characters!!
