Do not come into this expecting Attack on Titan. That may seem disingenuous given the thumping great title on the cover, but this is not Attack on Titan per se.
In contrast to the mothership series being a big, high concept battle between outlandish giants and dudes with bungee cords strapped to their backs, Before the Fall is a much smaller, more intimate tale (once you get past the opening chapter, of course) concerning a young man and a naive girl. The young man just happens to have been caesareaned from his mother's womb inside a ball of Titan puke, and the naive girl just happens to be part of the aristocratic family that's imprisoned the young man and beaten him senseless for two of the fifteen years of his life he didn't spend imprisoned in a slave market.
Ok, so maybe it's a bit high concept.
Despite the tonal difference (not to mention artist and writer), Before the Fall is still an interesting story. A wise choice is veering the narrative and characters - at least for the moment - almost completely away from anything connected to the main thrusts of vanilla Attack on Titan. We're in Wall Sheena with a closer look at the city's hedonistic society than ever before, and all the characters appear to be of their own creation rather than relatives of ones we know in the original story. Of course, now I've mentioned that second point I'm sure we'll later discover that young man protagonist Kuklo is actually Levi's great-grandfather, thereby explaining the ease with which the latter slays Titans in the present day using the boiling Titan-born blood in his veins as he utilises Titanshout to send them to Sovngarde-

The first volume is short, all considered. Chapters are longer but there's fewer of them, and the whole book feels more like an extended prologue to the series proper than an actual text in and of itself the way Attack on Titan Volume 1 was. Despite that, there's enough interesting narrative choices here to make me want more. Depending on writer Ryo Suzukaze's choices, the story about Kuklo and naive girl deuteragonist Sharle having an extended meet-cute could end up tiredly predictable. Since this guy's been brought on to run a series by Hajime Isayama though (and I have to believe the latter would have some kind of oversight on the spin-offs that bear the name of his magnum opus), I'm pretty confident we'll see something different.

This definitely isn't on Attack on Titan level, and I needed some time to get used to the art style, but now, after I've finished Vol. 1, I can say that it's actually pretty good start of the series. I'm really interested to see where will the story go from here.

To be completely honest, I think I like this better than the actual story.

Eh this was pretty weak. So attack on titan is a fast paced action packed series about titans eating people and humans trying to survive. Before the Fall is about one titan eating people, spitting back a baby, and people believing he is the son of a titan. Right off the bat it sounds off but hell, let's go with it okay?
The two main leads are a titanboy and the daughter of the person who bought him from a prison only to shackle him up once more. One day the girl decides it's time to split from this place and they decide together they will leave.
What I liked: The idea of learning more about the titans is interesting. I also like the contrast between AoT BIG cast and this very small cast.
What I didn't like: The art is really bad sometimes. As in I can't tell what in the fucking world is happening. I also had issue with a lot of the dialog, for it's super stilted, more so than usual in manga. The two main leads are kind of lifeless and boring and the plot really felt cliche and not well told.
This could be, or should be, a lot better. I'll try a few more volumes to see if it improves but if the rest are anything like this I'm in trouble. I don't expect action every page but damn, if you want me to care about these characters, give me something more than cliche shit that you present here. A 1.5-2 out of 5.

I absolutely LOVED this series.
When I first watched Attack on Titan, it felt very futile and needlessly violent. I had a really hard time watching it. But as the story develops, it becomes more HUMAN. It deals with suffering, grief, trauma, hope, beauty. It is true to how human beings are with one another - it has wonderfully fleshed out politics, emotions, character development, and plot - IF you can stomach all of the death and destruction.
And that’s coming from somebody who has only watched the show. Don’t worry - the manga is on my list. But I wanted to read the story in order, so I started here.
Before the Fall answers a lot of unanswered questions - what has the political spectrum behind the walls looked like, and how did it lead to the current political decay in the story? How were anti-titan weapons created? What does life look like behind the walls for people who aren’t military? How do certain cults and factions come to be - the titan worshippers and wall worshippers? Etc.
Come prepared: if you read Isayama first, this story will feel jarring. It’s sanctioned by Isayama and Kodansha, but it’s written and drawn by other creators. It’s all canon, but it’s stylistically different. Personally, this didn’t bother me at all.
If you allow it to, Before the Fall’s intellectual tackling of the ODM development, the history of the Survey Core, the nuances of conservative and reformist wall politics, and other intrigue and mystery will thrill you.
More importantly, though, the story deals with themes of belonging. The danger of dehumanizing others. The need for the strongest hope of humanity to rest in love and not anger - in care and not vengeance. Nothing against Eren Jaeger, who is who he is for a reason - but the main character here, Kuklo, stands in stark contrast.
Rather than themes of kill or be killed, the world is cruel, lose your humanity to fight, etc. Before the Fall centers on themes of family, love, and emotion - all in a soft boy! I love a male character who is true to his feelings.
I’m also a sucker for a good “shoujo” ending - and let’s face it - somewhere in this dismal tale of gloom and doom, SOME characters deserve to just win and be happy, right?
Overall, this story will surprise you with its sweetness, and likely give you a breath of fresh air and hope before you dive into Attack on Titan true and all your precious babies die left and right. Good luck out there!

Titana Saldırı en sevdiğim shounen serilerinden biri. Spin-off mangalarına geçememiştim ama anime olarak ne var ne yok izledim. :D Ama basılıyorken atlanamazdı tabi, umarım Sungeki no Kyojin'ine kadar basılır. :D
Titana Saldırı'nın seviyesinde değil kesinlikle, ve Hajime-san'ın tarzında bir şeyler beklemeyin, onun orijinal çizimlerinden eser yok çünkü. Konu güzel başladı yine de, cildin sonuna doğru biraz klişeleşti ama ilerde ilginçleşebilir... Artık çıktıkça okurum. :D

Ich hatte mir diese manga ausgesucht das es zufällig in prime reading kostenlos war und ich mein kindle etwas mehr nutzen wollte, unter anderem habe ich gestern haikyuu (die Serie) angefangen und bin einfach mega begeistert das ich mal ein manga lesen wollte.
An sich könnte man alle sehr gut mitverfolgen (Bilder und Texte) nur fand ich manche Szenen wechsel (Zeitensprünge) etwas schwer erkennbar, was alles etwas "komplizierter" gemacht hat, den noch fand ich manche Szenen sehr unerwartet und dementsprechend hat es sehr mitgerissen und dem manga ein offenes Ende gelassen.
Manche Zeichnung fand ich etwas hässlich oder hätte man sicherlich auch schöner hinbekommen, aber an sich ein sehr solides und vorallem für mich kostenloses manga👌🏻

This is a review of the entire series.
Cut from a titan's stomach after his cultist mother was eaten alive when he was still growing inside her womb, Kuklo bore the cursed reputation of being the son of a titan. He was locked in a cage as a toddler and treated as a circus freak to be paraded around. After years of abuse on the streets he was sold to the Inocencio royal family to become the plaything of their cruel son Xavi. Never taught how to speak or shown the love of another human being, Kuklo's life seemed destined to meet a gloomy end. That was until Sharle, the daughter of the Inocencio family visits him in his cell one fateful night and teaches him the warmth of another person.
Before the Fall takes a very different approach to storytelling than the main series. The high stakes action, intricate world-building, thrilling political undertones, masterful use of mystery and foreshadowing aren't really anywhere to be seen here. That's not to say the prequel is bad, it just tells a much more personal and self-contained narrative that serves to flesh out the lesser explored elements of the main series such as who was the first person to ever kill a titan, how the survey corps were formed and how the three dimensional odm gear they use to kill titans was invented.
The star of the manga in my opinion was Sharle. She threw away a life of luxury and safety to save Kuklo and rebel against the cruelty of her own royal family. She constantly puts herself in danger to confront the horrors of the titans, corrupt royals and rogue criminals. She uses her well-educated background to enlist herself in the service of a group of underground blacksmiths in order to improve their methods and create the technological foundation of the military gear that would go on to give humans a fighting chance against the titans. She was the backbone of the whole narrative and her influence had the biggest impact on the events of the main series. If not for her efforts, none of the characters in the main series would've ever had the means to survive. I also just really enjoyed her personality, the way she never discriminates against the lesser class and how she breaks free from the chains of her royal upbringing.
Kuklo was a decent character, but after he meets Sharle he mostly just feels like a generic Shounen protagonist. He's not bad, just mundane and doesn't really fit in with the overall complex cast, especially next to the secondary protagonist Sharle who ended up accomplishing so much. Some of the world-building doesn't line up with the main series such as titans being able to walk at night and them disappearing the second they're killed, but most of the inconsistencies were minor things that weren't enough to completely destroy the immersion. The limited scope of the plot and setting also made the pacing feel somewhat tedious at times because most of the drama is never taken beyond the walls of the cities, but it also made room for more personal time between the characters living out their daily lives together and really learning to put their heads together to help form a better world for humanity's last survivors.
Not nearly as good as the main series and it doesn't add that much to the world or overall story, but it's an enjoyable side story that gives you a better understanding of the basics regarding daily life in the walled cities and how the foundations of military power and titan-fighting capabilities came to be. It probably won't appeal to casual readers of the series, but it might be worth checking out if you're already a diehard fan of Attack on Titan.

I watched the first few episodes on nextflix but it’s not in English so I opted to go with the manga to check it out the manga are farther than the anime. Attack on Titan: Before the Fall is the prequel of Attack on Titan. It’s set before wall Maria was breached and before they knew how to fight the titans. The story revolves around a boy that was born after his mother was regurgitated and the girl he befriended.
In the first installment starts 70 years in the past. The titan’s while feared even have worshipers one of those has recently joined the ranks happens to be the widow of one of the survey corps. When a titan is let into the city it feasts on humans only to be lured out of the city by where it regurgitates all the humans it’s eaten. None of them have been digested and the body of the widow’s child is alive. That child is named the Titan child locked up his whole life.
It’s been a while since I dove back into the world of the Titans but decided it was time to read about what happened before Attack on Titan. It’s interesting to see what happened 70 years in the past, and I’m curious to see how we will evolve to fight the titans. The art is entertaining it works well with the story. I really enjoy that each installment is a mix of story and action giving just enough to keep you wanting more. I’m already captivated by the two characters Sharle and Kuklo who escaped with their lives. I quickly fell in love with the prequel just like I did Attack on Titans. I can’t wait to see how it will progress and learn more about the characters in this series.

It's obvious that the art of the manga is ALOT better that the original series. The characters faces aren't grotesque in some panels, though it seems the design of the titans have changed. The one titan seen is more disfigured and strange than the ones in AOT. The story so far was quite good. I loved the titan's child part though it's a little mind boggling that the people in the wall treated him in such a way and locked him up for half of his life (some people just suck that way). It was a little cliche with the whole "oh, one girl actually cares about me and doesn't think I am a monster, yayyyy!" but the girl was pretty kawaii.
I'm not sure where this is gunna go, but I still like it!

This Manga was awesome it was attack on titan but like before everything happen it was really cool i really did enjoyed art was good and the story line was good it was like almost like it wasn't nothing like attack on titan awesome manga if your a big fan of attack on titan get this manga and u will love it :D

It feels sooooooo different from the original series.
Not a fan of the art style.
But, that said, I really liked the start of this spinoff of Attack on Titan and I'm interested in seeing where it will lead and how much it will tie into the original story.

I really enjoy this! The panels when the titan attacked in the beginning were too dark but the story was a great start for a journey that I'm very looking forward!

This prequel to 'Attack on Titan' is absolutely fantastic and addictive. We follow another budding and hopeful protagonist as he travels within the walls and fights titans.

بالعادة لا أقرأ القصص المصورة باللون الأبيض الأسود، والمانجا هنا تتكلم عن ما قبل 70 سنة من أحداث المسلسل الشهير، حيث يمكن التخمين بأن جميع شخصيات المسلسل لم تولد بعد. في هذا القسم من السلسلة نرى فيلق الكشافة (سيرفي كوربس) وهم يمتشقون السيوف فقط، كما أنهم يجهلون العديد من المعلومات عن العمالقة ولديهم أساطير كذلك حولهم.
أقوم بقراءة الكوميكس والمانجا على الحاسوب عبر برنامج Yac Reader وهو الأفضل.

This was a pretty good volume! We pick up with two guys named Solm and Carlo who discover that the titan worshippers led by some Elena-san are waiting for a titan to come and devour them because zealots and then a titan does do that and spits them back up, but what they find is a human child survived and scared that its a titan, they imprison him since childhood until he is bought by a man named Dario who has brought him for his son Shakii to beat him to make the latter feel superior as he is to join the Training corps, meanwhile we have his daughter Charlies first tryna kill this titan-child KYUKURO until she sees he is just like them and they befriend each other and things happen, she teaches him until 2 years later when his use is finished as Shakii has achieved his purposes, and both plan to escape. It was a great volume and introduces us to a world 70 years ago before the fall of Wall Maria, the art in it is so good.

This was just not interesting. At all. Like how do you get so boring with a setting like AOT?
It literally starts when a baby is born from a recently spit-out Titan victim. It's so dark, but also intriguing, right? I promise that's literally the most interesting part.
This is volume 1, I get it, but there should be a hook for me to keep reading. There isn't.

(Read Harder Challenge 2019: Read a book of manga)
As part of the Read Harder Challenge my wife and I are doing, I picked up this volume from the library. I don’t read much manga, but on initial review, it did appear similar to what you might expect from Japanese-style animation/artwork, but it is quality and the style does add to the work.
The story centers on a world where humans lived in walled settlements to protect themselves from massive humanoid beings called Titans. In this saga, a Titan gets into the settlement and kills most of the population. Normally wouldn’t include this detail, but it is central to the plot...the Titan consumes the people, but then regurgitates them back out. One of the victims was pregnant, and while she dies, the baby is born alive. Fearful of Titan contamination, the boy is locked up, sold to a powerful noble when he is 13. The Titan boy is subject to daily abuse from an arrogant son. The sister attempts to kill the Titan boy, but instead becomes a friend, introducing books and teaching him about life, etc. The Titan boy bides his time to plan for his escape. The book ends with him ask the girl to come with him, as she is slated to enter a forced marriage.
The plot is fairly standard, but it is clear that this is the first in a series. Still, it is easy to see how the reader will want to see how the boy escapes, what happens to the girl, how does the arrogant boy get his come-up-pence, and what of the Titans? I don’t know if I will read future manga works, as they are not my natural genre, but I am glad to at least try to broaden my horizons.

Before the Fall explores the lives of the regular people, their struggles, beliefs, desperation, those who live in luxury, and those who don't. Even within the walls there are yet more walls for some. When Kuklo gets pulled from the remains of his mother's body within the vomit of a Titan, he is branded "titan's son", sold off, and treated like an object. Having never known freedom, he plans his escape. Sharle, the daughter of Kuklo's owner, who is about to be forced into a marriage she doesn't desire, is no more free than this boy that she befriends. This side-story of the popular Attack on Titan series was not made by creator Hajime Isayama, instead a writer and artist pair were brought in. Story-wise, it holds promise, and despite not achieving the height of the original's creativity, thematically it is very similar. Where it best excels at is in the art. Deeply shaded, and with a much higher standard of quality, it strays considerably from the high-energy, brusk style of the source material. These events occur well before that of the breaching of the wall and the tale of Eren. It contributes greatly to the shape of the world as a whole, but it is yet to be seen whether it will reveal any significant information.

If you're reading this with hopes of finding out unknown truths of the titans you'll be disappointed, likewise if you're after the high octane action of the main series you're in the wrong place.
However it does follow the theme of suffering and redemption that is very prolific in the main series. It follows a boy cut from the womb of his mother after she is eaten and spewed up by a Titan, he's seen as an oddity and abomination due to his origin and is thrown in a cell. I'll be honest this part of the story is pretty depressing as he is submitted to beatings and neglect when he seems as human as you or I.
I'm hoping that the 2nd volume picks up a bit and capitalises on the mystery of the Titans a bit more but I'm not in any rush to go out and get it. Given that it's the 1st volume it's bound to have a lot of setup for characters and storylines so maybe I should give it more of a chance and it will grow on me.
If you love all things Attack on Titan give it a read, if you're a casual fan you could probably give this one a miss in my opinion.

My main interest in this series is to find out more about the world and story that led up to the original Attack on Titan manga series. I didn't begin reading it with much thought for the characters, and while I care for them a little bit by the end of this volume, I am still more interested in the setting and the politics that I see tying into the main AoT storyline.
The art (by Satoshi Shiki) is much better than Isayma's, and some of the stars I gave this book are due to that. It's pleasant to look at and easy to read through, and though the story itself is kind of cliche it has been used over and over again (girl befriends socially shunned boy, etc.) because it is entertaining and gives you some reason to care what happens to the characters.
So definitely not as good as Isayama's original series, but a decent manga in its own right and probably good enough to continue reading between installments of the first.

I can not truly give a good review of this volume, as it is the first of a multi-volume comic adaptation of the Attack on Titan: Before the Fall, Kuklo Unbound light novels.
From what I have seen, however, this manga is promising. The art is vivid, and brings to mind the scattered images in the light novel by Ryo Suzukaze. Given that the illustrator is different for the manga than the LN, this was a great job on his part to capture the spirit of the illustrations in the LN.
The adaptation seems to take the point of view of switching betwixt an omniscient pov and the pov of Sharle Innocencio. The pacing, the choice of how to distill many pages down to a the choice of panels and scenes shown, all of it worked really well.
I'm truly impressed with this first volume and look forward to future ones. Highly Recommended.

I thought I was going to like this so imagine my surprise when I ended up hating it a whole lot. I mean, I'm used to manga setting things up and all, but the entire first volume is just set-up, nothing of any consequence happens (beyond him meeting the very boring, cliche girl who of course, is the only one to show him kindness). And why should I care about this random kid who is supposedly a Titan's son? I'll read the next volume, but only because I'm curious if it ties into the main series in any way.

The story was OK. I wasn't grabbed right away like I was for the original series. Since this is only volume 1 there hasn't been much time to establish the story. If the library buys the next volume though I'll probably pick it up at some point.
Artwork
It's hard to compare the artwork of this to the original series. My main complaint of the main series is the action scenes. This volume didn't really have many of those. I want to Mr. Shiki's art is better than Mr. Isayama's but it's hard to really say at this point.

As a huge fan of Attack on Titan, I was never not going to read this. However, I have to say I was kinda disappointed. I know that this is volume is setting up for the story, which is why I didn't give it a low rating, but I just found that I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as AOT. I know a lot of people prefer the artwork in this, I don't. I actually really like Isayama Hajime's artwork, I like that it's gritty, and a bit messy. His artwork fits with the feel of the story, I'm just not feeling Shiki Satoshi's art.

Irgendwie hab ich mich mit diesem Spin-Off schwer getan. Ich liiiiiiebe Attack on Titan und auch diese Spin-Off Reihe hat schon ihren Reiz, aber irgendwie ist mir der Zeichenstil hier zu "schön und niedlich" und auch soooooo viele Seiten mit mit "fast Nichts" gefüllt, dass es mir wirklich schwer macht, den ersten Band der Reihe auch wirklich zu mögen. Die Idee und auch das Titanenkind sind echt gut und machen Hunger auf mehr, aber so richtig begeistert bin ich leider nicht. Sehr schade ... nichtsdestotrotz werde ich dem zweiten Band noch eine Chance geben!
