A Whirlwind of Horses, Heartache, and Healing: "Repairing a Broken Heart" by G.L. Robinson

"Repairing a Broken Heart" is the kind of novel that sweeps you off your feet, much like a spirited stallion on a wild Irish moor. G.L. Robinson has crafted a story that's as much a love letter to equine grace as it is a tale of personal growth, resilience, and, of course, the tangled web of love.

The Heroine We All Cheer For
From the get-go, Lyla Worsley had me in her corner. Her spirited defiance against selling her horse to a less-than-gentle lord sets the tone for a woman of strength, principle, and a fierce heart. Lyla's journey from the rolling hills of England to the rugged beauty of Ireland is more than geographical—it's a journey of the soul.

A Tale of Two Lands
Robinson's narrative masterfully intertwines the complexities of English and Irish relations during a tumultuous period, through the lens of horse trading and social intricacies. The anecdotes of the various personalities within the Queen's forces add a delightful depth, showcasing the contrast between honor and boisterous danger.

Love, Loss, and Horses

The core of this tale is Lyla's passion for horses, a mirror to her journey towards healing and self-discovery. Her refusal to be married off as a solution to her family's financial woes leads her to Ireland, where she immerses herself in the world of horse trading—a realm traditionally dominated by men. Here, amidst the peat-scented air and the vibrant local society, Lyla finds freedom and a sense of purpose.

The Irish Charm and Challenge
Lyla's interactions with the locals, including the dashing Finn Gallagher, add a rich layer to the narrative. Their burgeoning friendship, built on respect and a shared love for horses, is a testament to Lyla's growth and her ability to stand as an equal in a man's world. Robinson skillfully uses these relationships to explore themes of national identity, cultural misunderstandings, and the universal quest for respect and understanding. The novel doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of life during this era, including the plight of the camp followers and the tensions between the British and the Irish. Lyla's efforts to bridge these divides and bring about change are some of the most compelling aspects of the story.

The Verdict
For those who love historical fiction with a hearty dose of romance, equine splendor, and a heroine who's as brave as she is compassionate, "Repairing a Broken Heart" is a must-read. It's a journey across lands, through history, and into the heart, with a satisfying conclusion that proves sometimes, a broken heart is just the beginning of a grand adventure.

Repairing a Broken heart by G.L Robinson is a slow-burn historical romance set in Regency England and Ireland.

Sometimes a broken heart can just be the beginning of your greatest adventure. Lyla Worsley always expected to marry her childhood friend Harry Blankley, but when Harry is engaged to another, to secure his family’s future, Lyla is left with a broken heart. She wants to escape their married bliss and talks her father into allowing her to leave England to travel to Ireland with her companion and a groom. There, acting as a horse buyer for his father, she meets Finn Gallagher, a fellow competitor she learns to respect. They form a friendship that develops into something deeper over time. Finn is taken with her from the first, but wants to give her time to heal and misses his chance as unexpected news sends Lyla back home. Will she be able to continue her life the way it was before or has Ireland changer her for ever?

This is a story about heartache, personal growth, healing and self-discovery. It is a great book – lighthearted and quick-paced. It is a Regency romance of course, but what a refreshing departure from the ballrooms and strict rules of the ton. The book takes you from England to Ireland and back. The story flows effortlessly and you are just swept off to a different time. It is interesting to see, how the author pictures the confrontation between the English and Irish people after Ireland fell under the British rule. What is more – it is also unusual to read about the camp followers – the women with no rights and their terrible living conditions. I really liked how both of these topics were handled respectfully and elegantly. The book was also built up a bit differently: first we start in the middle of the story, then go back to the beginning and get to know the background story. The characters and their growth was a pleasure to follow. All the characters feel very real, like your friends or next door neighbors. The protagonists just make you want to cheer for them. Lyla is a spirited, strong minded and independent heroine and a true horsewoman. Her pining after Harry somehow gave me some “Gone with the Wind” vibes. Finn is just as horse-mad, as Lyla and treats her as an equal, add Irish charm and good looks and a caring heart... It is a clean romance, no steam whatsoever, but you can still sense the romantic tension between the two. I really like that the relationship between Lyla and Finn is built on equality and respect and of course on their shared horse-madness. The dialogue is well written, especially the banter between Finn and Lyla. Lyla’s interaction with the locals is also something to behold as she makes an impact on a number of people. All in all it is a great story and I absolutely enjoyed reading it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Lyla was a strong, independent, and hard-working woman who was raised by her father, learning the family's horse business. She fell in love with Harry, the boy of her youth, who promised to always love her and return to marry her; but when news returns to Lyla that Harry is engaged, then married to a wealthy young woman, Lyla is heartbroken. She painfully decides she needs to escape and gets permission from her father to travel to Ireland to help procure horses there for the family business. When she arrives in Ireland with her maid/companion and stable boy, Lyla realizes nothing is as it was in England; but she doesn't give up! As she encounters a muddy run-down dormitory, "camp followers" women, soldiers, anti-Britain sentiments, and so much more, Lyla steps out of her privileged lifestyle with a determined, caring and warm heart, and her transformation begins. She has an interesting adventure--rarely easy--living in a far different and rougher lifestyle and refusing to live up to other people's expectations. The characters Lyla encounters are well portrayed, as are the sights, and smells of Ireland. When Lyla first meets Finn, she's resentful that she lost a horse to him; yet she was somewhat pleased that he hadn't given in to her. Can the two competitors get along enough to work together in procuring horses? And as feelings develop, what will happen when Lyla's father calls her home? Leaving Ireland, the friends and everything Lyla had loved and worked so hard for was heartbreaking.
My favorite line was when Lyla realizes that she was in love with an idea of her former love, but not the real him. The "grand finale" ending was exciting! There's humor, Irish history, swoony moments, broken hearts, arson, kidnapping, and so much more that held my interest throughout. I can't wait to begin reading more by this new (to me) author! I received a complimentary ARC of this book and have voluntarily given my honest opinion in this review.

Repairing A Broken Heart by GL Robinson, when the book starts feistyLyla Wardsley is refusing to sell a horse to Sir Lawrence due to the way he treats his horses something he claims he will get revenge for. He will have to wait however because when her life long best friend Harry Blakely breaks their secret engagement to marry an Aris Lilla feels directionless and decides the best thing she can do is get away from England so she don’t even have to hear about Harry and his new lovely wife. This is How she, her companion Miss Potter and her favorite stableboy Jeb find their self traveling to Newbridge in Ireland. She is there to buy horses for the family business and how she meets Phinn McGregor. That first he is her competition but soon they become friends and horse buying companions as they seem to have the same eye for horse flesh but when she feels herself being taken by the Irishman she doesn’t know if he’s being honest or just giving her the blarney. While in Ireland Lila proves there is more to her than just being a Lady. She is tenacious has grit kindness and compassion but when she goes back to England she wonders if she’ll ever see Phinn again. I know that is a terrible way to end a review especially for an awesome story like this one because there is way more to the story than what’s in this review. There’s the dorm she makes into a cozy home the woman who follow a military camp that she helps get cleaner places to live the Irish convict she hides away in her home and so much more not to mention the fire… There’s a lot to this book I haven’t put in my review just know this book is so good and if you love sweet regency stories then you’ll definitely enjoy this one. I love GL Robinsons books and I do believe this is her best yet! For so long the book about Nanny Rosemary has been my favorite by her but it has been unseated and this story will take that spot. It is so good I loved it!#Book sirens, #GL Robinson, #repairing a broken heart,

Lyla Worsley had been in love with, and expected to marry her childhood friend, Harry Blankley.

When Harry married an heiress, to secure his family’s future, Lyla’s heart was broken, but she persuaded her father to let her go to Ireland to purchase horses for their Stables, and to help out their man there, as he was getting older, and his recent purchases weren’t up to scratch.

Lyla had crossed swords with Sir Laurence earlier, who she knew from her childhood, and also knew he was a poor rider, and didn’t look after his horses as well as she would have, and she refused to sell him a horse from the Worsley stables.

This story is very well plotted, and the characters are well written and believable. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and empathised with the main characters who were used to a more comfortable life than they found in Ireland.

Lyla kept her broken heart to herself, and dealt with a number of scenarios she would never have come across at home in Middlesex, all the while enjoying the role she played in buying the horses for her stables at home.

When she did return home, however, things did not go smoothly for her, but thankfully, she was saved from a fate worse than death by someone she had left behind in Ireland.

Lyla always expected to marry her childhood friend Harry - until he ended up having to marry an heiress in a hurry. Broken-hearted, she convinces her father to send her to Ireland to help purchase horses for his business. And between horses and friends old and new (particularly Finn), she believes she's doing a reasonable job of getting over her broken heart - until unexpected news sends her home in a hurry. But what she finds there will make her question her heart - and put her in a danger that may make her heart a moot point...

This was a good read but done in a somewhat unusual way: we jump into the middle of the story, then go back to the start and develop a relationship, then shove that relationship into the background for most of the second half of the book. It works surprisingly well, but I did find the beginning left me a little befuddled until I worked out where it fit in. Nevertheless, Lyla and Finn's relationship was particularly enjoyable to watch developing - perhaps because of how much of a slow burn it was? Lyla has some character development to go through, and it adds significantly to the story. And a villain never goes amiss, right? All in all, a good read and I look forward to the author's next book.

Lyla Worsley is the daughter of a man who buys and sells horses and is actively involved in the business with her father. She is a wonderful character who is fearless, strong, and able to stand on her own in a very much male dominated world of horse trading.

Growing up next to Harry and his family, Lyla always assumed she would marry him once he had a chance to make some money. Unfortunately for Lyla, after Harry's father makes some bad decisions, he decides to marry an heiress instead to restore the family coffers.

Heartbroken, she manages to convince her father to let her travel to Ireland to oversee the purchase of the horses. She also has in mind to check on their local agent who is getting along in years and whose recent purchases have not been of the same quality as previous.

While in Ireland she meets Finn Gallagher, a fellow competitor and someone she respects. The two form a good friendship that develops over time into something deeper.

Wonderfully written story by GL Robinson that drew me in and kept me engaged from start to finish. Such rich detail included in the that make this well worth the read.

I received an ARC from the author with thanks and submit my honest review.

Synopsis - A charming story where Lyla convinces her father to travel to Ireland to buy horses for their stables in England after her friend Harry gets engaged to someone else. This sweet and clean story reveals how Harry decides to get engaged and Lyla deals with heartbreak and her circumstances in Ireland, eventually finding happiness. This author has once again shared a wonderful story.

What I liked - I enjoyed how the main characters were well-developed and original. The supporting characters were engaging and added value to the story. I liked it when the story moved to a different place for a major part of the book. A few surprises help to keep things interesting and advance the story. The story has amazing world-building and captivating characters. The main characters faced challenges but had a happy ending. Great development of characters and setting. Spunky heroine.

What I did not like - I disliked the Irish accent and felt the ending was hurried.

Jilted and heartbroken, Lila Worsley convinces her father to send her to Ireland to assist in buying horses for their stable. Lila, who loves and excels at caring for horses, is quite excited about the trip. She and her companion Potter move into a converted barracks new the English fort, meet some wonderful people (and two “in-charge” cats), and have quite an adventure. When she meets Finn Gallagher, friendly competition, so to speak, she doesn’t know how to take him. Even when she returns home, she can’t get him out of her thoughts. When near disaster strikes, he comes to the rescue. Well-written and heartwarming, this story draws you in and keeps your attention. There is some betrayal and disappointment, but there is also adventure, friendship, humor, and a very nice romance. The characters are terrific. Finn is a great hero, confident, strong, intelligent, and protective. Lyla is independent, smart, and feisty. The secondary characters are entertaining, even the “villain.” An interesting and entertaining read.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. It starts out a bit slow, but the story picks up about a third of the way through. It took me about three or four days to get through the first third, and then I read the rest in one day.

I really like how the story compared the way that Lyla was treated by her two love interests. It clearly shows the reader why the one was a better choice. I do wish some of this had been shown in actual scenes rather than just in Lyla talking or thinking about it.

I do feel like this book needed a bit more character development. While I like Lyla with the guy she ends up with in the end, I do wish we'd seen more scenes of them together.

This book has a few swear words, I'd say less than 5. It does hint at some sexual content situations, but we don't get the graphic details of them. The violence is behind the scenes, although there is one scene where you know the character was beaten up pretty badly.

A clean story. We have Layla, a daughter of a gentleman who traces horses. She is very much ‘no none sense’ down to earth and very knowledgeable about horses. She has automatically thought she would marry Harry her childhood friend, as they had agreed to when he had made some money. Unfortunately whilst he wants to marry her his father has got his estates in debt so he marries an heiress, without even explaining to Layla why. Naturally heartbroken she goes to Ireland for a year to work sort out their agent, and whilst still missing Harry finds attraction to an Irish competitor. What to do?
I liked the story. It made a change that it was predominately in Ireland, and virtually nobody had a title - makes a change from a surfeit of Dukes, Earls and the like typically found on regency romances. It also touched on some of the issues between the English and Irish peoples. The book made drew me in, making me want to keep reading to find out what happens. Recommended.

Lyla is a horse loving Englishwoman who is devastated when her lifelong best friend and sweetheart marries an heiress. She convinces her father to let her go to Ireland to help with his horse-buying business so she can get away from the newlyweds and get over her disappointment.

Lyla thrives in Ireland, but cannot quite move past losing Harry. I was sometimes a little frustrated with her stubbornness on this, because in Ireland she meets charming fellow horse buyer Finn, who seems perfect for her.

This book has a lot of story—the author clearly loves Ireland and has done some historical homework about Ireland—and I enjoyed the story. It was probably a little lighter on romance than I expected, but if you enjoy a story full of twists and turns and adventures, you’ll like this one. It is clean, there is no steam at all. I think I would have liked a little more romance between Lyla and Finn, and that’s why I couldn’t give it all 5 stars, but they do get their HEA in the end.

Having known Harry since childhood and growing up with him, Lyla always assumed they would one day marry. But fate had other plans, as Harry becomes engaged to an heiress instead. His family is in financial trouble and he must marry someone wealthy in order to secure his family's future. While Lyla understands this, she is still heartbroken and decides to take herself away from London. She convinces her father to let her go to Ireland to purchase horses for his business. She goes to Ireland in hope of dealing with her heartache and she returns with so much more finding the happiness she thought she had lost for good.
This was an entertaining and enjoyable story and kept my interest from beginning to end. The characters were interesting and well-portrayed and I enjoyed their interactions. A lovely story I am glad to have had the opportunity to read!

Audiobook: I was entertained by this story. Harry and Lyla were planning on getting married, but Harry needed to acquire some money first. When Harry's family's need for money became too urgent, Harry agreed to marry an heiress. Lyla was devastated. Lyla asked her father to let her go to Ireland to help purchase the horses needed for his business. The story had all the elements of a great romance. There was friendship, betrayal, machinations, humor, and love. I liked the characters of Lyla and Finn and enjoyed their tangled path to love. I appreciated that the female protagonist was fierce, independent, and opinionated. She didn't let society dictate her every thought and action. GL Robinson's narration was charming, and her performance enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

I enjoyed this story with all the characters within. The main character was Lyla Worsley.

Lyla Worsley lives with her father on a ranch. She loves horse and knows all about them. When her best friend decided to marry someone else she not happy about it. Because he told her that he would marry her. When her father tells her about the horses that they have been get from Ireland have been not that great she decided to ask if she could go there and see why this is happening. Her father at first is not sure but in the end he lets her. When she gets to Ireland she surprised what she finds out. While there she meets a lot of different people.

This was a fun story to read. It had action, adventure and suspense. It had a few giggles within. It a little sad at the beginning.

Absolutely marvelous!

Within the first 40 pages of this book, I got that feeling that all Book Lovers recognize and cherish.. that certitude that this was going to be an amazing adventure...that feeling of sinking comfortably into the welcoming arms of a finely crafted story that seems to have been written just for you. And that feeling has never played me false.
Everything about this book was perfect! The characters were richly drawn and their growth was deeply heartening. The storyline was beautifully engineered and flowed perfectly. And the dramatic facets were spot on from their introduction to resolution.
I have read a few of GL Robinson's books now, and have never been disappointed. Off to find another, now.
Oh, and I highly recommend this book, in case I wasn't clear about that.

If you can't have your man, will a horse or two do instead?!

No, of course not - but for Lyla they make coping with her broken romance easier! Wanting to get away from her home when the man she loves breaks their engagement and marries someone else, she runs to Ireland to become her father's agent for their horse trading business, and soon gets involved in much more than just the horse fairs over there!

GL Robinson's romances are not only great love stories set in a believable regency background, they also always include an element of dealing with one or more of the more serious aspects of life as well, and this book is no exception.

I always look forward to her new books coming out and I thoroughly enjoyed this one as always!

Heart Warming!
Just what is it about an Irish accent that is so very appealing? To me it is oh so romantic and it sounds like liquid gold to my ears (in this case, via my eyes).
You may have guessed that this book is set partly in Ireland with all its rain and their horses...
The story has such lovely descriptions of the people, the world they are living in at that time and our main characters are wonderful, strong and not afraid to get things done.
Of course there is a villain. How could there not be?
I will admit that I couldn't put this book down once I began reading it.
So, this story is really worth reading and perhaps you too will fall in love with it's characters.
As I have!

Repairing a Broken Heart is a new Regency Romance by G L Robinson. I have read and listened to many of G L Robinson's books. Each of het books is different and fresh. Repairing a Broken Heart is outstanding. Lyla is a strong and independent young lady. I think she is a wonderful main character. Although Lyla is the center of this novel, the author took several other characters and integrated their own stories with Lyla and I felt this added a depth to the book. I felt the author pulled all of the threads of the story together for a perfect conclusion. Repairing a Broken Heart is a fantastic story to escape into the world of Regency England and Ireland. Can you run away from love?
She thought Harry loved her and she was prepared to wait for him, but Lyla is devastated when he becomes engaged to someone else. He writes to explain his reasons and she wants to forgive him, but all she can think of is escape.
She persuades her father to send her to Ireland to help in purchasing horses for the family business. In spite of meeting the engaging Finn and all sorts of other new people, from camp followers to the Colonel's lady, Lyla still falls asleep with Harry's folded and re-folded letter against her breast.
Then her father calls her home. Will she be able to take up the threads of her old life? Or has Ireland has changed her for ever?
Is it possible to repair a broken heart?

This novel was a treat. Lyla is horse mad, and when she is thrown over by the love of her life, she convinces her father to send her to Ireland to look after their family business. The characters felt like real people, and I was rooting for Lyla to figure out that first love isn't necessarily best love.

There were occasional mentions of a season in London, but the story principally was set on a horse farm in Middlesex and then in Ireland. Really interesting vignettes of Irish life and history in the Regency period.

This was the first novel that I have read from this author. Lyla is a debutante and a spirited girl who loves horses and has always looked after her father's stables well. She has no interest in marrying anyone from the ton. She's sent across to Ireland by her father to buy some horses to send back to England for their stable to sell on and check up on things across there. What she finds changes her life forever. A lovely story with interesting insights into Ireland and the Irish lives. I enjoyed this book and will definitely read more from this author. Honestly, I had to knock a star off my overall rating because of the awful Irish dialect. As an Irish person, it was extremely cringeworthy.

That aside, Repairing a Broken Heart is a decent read. I've read several of GL Robinson's books and I've always enjoyed them. She writes about such strong, capable women and Lyla was no different. I really liked her. Lyla's temperment and her love of animals were admirable. The story flows quite well and there are strong supporting characters, along with some drama (Sir Laurence certainly was vile character) and humour.

Entertaining

The autor delicately weaves a tale of love, betrayal, and redemption against the backdrop of the Regency era. Lyla's journey of heartbreak and self-discovery resonates deeply, as she grapples with the pain of lost love and the allure of new beginnings. Robinson's prose is elegant and evocative, capturing the essence of the time period while infusing the narrative with timeless themes of resilience and hope. With its engaging characters and poignant storyline, "Repairing A Broken Heart" is a captivating read that reminds us of the enduring power of love to heal even the deepest wounds.

When the h's childhood friend and now love marries another for her dowry to save his family, she convinces her father to let her go to Ireland for a year to improve the quality of horses their agent is sending for their stables. She meets the H and enjoys his humour and support in improving the living conditions of camp followers and saving a young man shot by soldiers. When she receives a letter that her love's wife has died, she returns home. She realizes that she and her love are not really suitable. The H comes to her and they marry. Nice to read a story in which the h and H know each with more than lustful thoughts.

A fun story with shades of the style of Georgette Heyer. A sweet story of self discovery and rising above what life throws at you.

I loved the independent and spunky heroine who knew her mind except when it came to romance.

The hero is unassuming and kind and just the guy for her but can he convince her?

A good plot with day to day events and several twists and turns to keep the reader happy.

I enjoyed the hints of historical tidbits as well.

I received this book as an ARC copy and all opinions are my own.

Run to Ireland brings more surprises

She loves working with horses and knows more about horse flesh then most men. She also loves her best friend and he loves her but he must marry someone else to save his family from having no home due to his fathers gambling. Heart broken her father approves to have her go to Ireland and look after the business of purchasing horses for one year. You have to read this book to find out about the rest of this adventure. So different from the normal stories about the glitzy balls. Great read.

I enjoyed this story. It has a little bit of everything: romance, humor and some heartbreak topped off with a happy ending. The story, although long, has a good pace. The characters are well developed. My favorite one is the heroine Lyla Worsley. She’s a kind-hearted spit fire. I loved the fact that Lyla is an intelligent woman too. I thought that Seamus the Irish agent was hilariously funny, and the author does a wonderful job of capturing an Irish brogue. This is a sweet romance. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
