Well! This wasn't what I expected - I'm unsure if it's in a bad or good way.
On one side, I liked the writing and I was surprised at how interesting are the side character. The atmosphere were nice and overall I had a good time.
But we didn't get the bloodthirsty woman I expected to see... I mean, Elizabeth was barely even morally-grey to be honest? Not a good person for sure but not really brutal either. I expected murderous MC, I expected her to be a cunning, to be a merciless and vicious political player... instead Elizabeth is constantly manipulated and pushed around, her every move backfires, she always loses... I don't mind the protagonist in a story losing - in fact, it's important for them to lose - but I want a win once in a while, you know?
Reading this it almost look strange I rated it high 😆 But I really enjoyed it! I just looked forward to something else but even if the bloodthirsty female MC was missing, the book is still good enough.

In general not my type of story. Specifically I’d expect a more feminist approach and a stronger female lead with a title like ‘Blood Queen’.

Малко със смесени чувства ме остави тази книга. Истината е, че не съм се ровила около личността на Елизабет Батори, но като цяло не очаквах една манипулирана и изиграна жена. Очаквах кръвожаден, безкомпромисен владетел или нещо по-силно...

Audiobookiem "Krwawa hrabina" zainteresowałam się po masie reklam, które wyświetlały mi się co chwila w mediach społecznościowych. Promowano go jako wciągający horror z Elżbietą Batory. Zachęcona zaczęłam słuchać, bo historia Elżbiety jest bardzo ciekawa postać. To moja druga powieść o tej kobiecie i moje pierwsze rozczarowanie.
NIe znam dokładnie historii Elżbiety Batory. Jednak ważam, że jest to postać niesamowicie ciekawa, ponieważ obok głosów, że była mądrą kobietą, która rządziła twardą reką i to była jej przeszkoda w męskim świecie. Nie bała się upomnieć u króla o zwrot zaciąginętego długu - to świadczy o jej odwadze. Z kolei są też głosy, że była osobą, która bez powodu torturowała swoich służących w czym podobno pomagał jej również mąź Franciszek.
Jaka była prawda? Myślę, że to wie tylko sama Elżbieta i jej otoczenie. Według mine w tej książce nie pokazano Elżbiety jako kobiety silnej i twarde. Raczej postrzegałam ją jako postać, którą w umiejętny sposób można było manipulować. Może i była twarda wobec króla, ale Anna Darvullia rozgrywała Elżbietą jak chciała. Potrafiła zastraszyć Elżbietę tak, aby ta straciła racjonalny obraz sytuacji.
Mnie osobiście ten audiobook nie porwał. Jest nijaki i za mło w nim Elżbiety. Nie jest to powieść, która ma jakąkolwiek wartość historyczną. Czuję się mocno rozczarowana, bo autorka nie pokazała Elżbiety w sposób charakterny.

Ik was nog helemaal in Halloween sfeer toen ik dit boek begon te lezen, maar werd misschien daardoor teleurgesteld. Dit boek probeert te historisch te zijn voor een spookverhaal, het was niet luguber genoeg. Tegelijkertijd was het niet historisch genoeg om een goede historische roman te zijn! Bepaalde historische feiten kloppen niet. Verder best een vermakelijk boek maar de uitwerking kon dus beter.

I managed to listen through the whole book, but It was dissatisfying, tbh it was a bit like a documentary retold in the form of a fiction novel. Should have stuck to watching the "Stay Alive" movie (2016), which gives a more interesting twist to Lady Batori's historical figure and is over in just 2 hours.

Als de man van Gravin Elizabeth Báthory (1560-1614) overlijdt op een of ander slagveld, zal zij de landerijen etc moeten bestieren. Terwijl ze een zenuwinzinking heeft, helpt Anna haar weer overeind te komen. Anna heeft geneeswijzen die niet traditioneel zijn, maar aangezien ze de gravin er zo bovenop heeft, wil Elizabeth haar graag bij zich houden. Anna en de gravin runnen een ziekenboeg, maar er gaan wel erg veel mensen dood... Ondertussen begint iedereen - tot aan het hof toe - over de gravin de roddelen: ze is een moordenares en wordt beticht van hekserij... Maar hoe zit het en wie is wie?
Hoewel ik dit geen hoogstaande literatuur vind, heb ik wel genoten van de sfeer die op z'n zachtst gezegd dreigend was. Gedurende het hele verhaal voel je dat er allemaal nare dingen te gebeuren staan, het is beklemmend en daar moet je van houden, maar ik vond dat heel goed gedaan.
Wat ik minder goed gedaan vond, is de uitwerking van de historische context. Dat vind ik op z'n zachtst gezegd lui gedaan. De auteur heeft duidelijk het verhaal van de gravin willen vertellen, maar geen zin gehad om research te doen. En dat is een gemiste kans.
Ik ben de geschiedenis gaan Googlen en dat is echt zeer fascinerend, het heeft zeker potentie, maar was wat mij betreft nu iets te simpeltjes. Ik ken Anna Lea verder niet, maar ik denk niet dat ze een thrillerauteur is... 🙈 Desalniettemin zeker met plezier naar geluisterd!

2.75. I dont remember the last time I wasn't interested in a book this much. Maybe it's just not my type but I'm SO glad I finished it 🫠

Het is echt een goed boek. Ik vond het einde alleen niet zo leuk en had het ook totaal niet verwacht.

"Bloodqueen" offers a gripping tale with its fair share of dark twists and turns. Based on true events, it was disappointing to see the most predictable outcome, contrary to what the protagonist believed, actually come to pass. While historically fitting, where a powerful woman meets her end under suspicion of witchcraft, I had hoped for a different outcome – perhaps I should delve further into the history of successful women or turn to fiction for that elusive victory.
