PoisonVerse Noir #1

Shattered Omega: Part One

Rate this book
I'm an omega left behind.
I’m damaged, forced to hide my nature, with a scent that can turn alphas violent. I was told there would be no normal, no friends, or dream pack waiting in the distance.
But I have one last chance at love.
Tomorrow, at the academy ball, my scent blockers will fade. My mates—the ones I was told I would never have—will see me.
But with one night to go, everything falls apart, and I find myself blackmailed by ruthless alphas. They are set on keeping my scent for themselves.
Dusk, Umbra, and Ransom are the only alphas in the school more prestigious than my mates. Arrogant, beautiful, and deadly, they’re an enigma, shunning all omega attention.
Until now.
Too late, I learn that their pack lead, Dusk Varis, is as obsessed as he is unhinged. He doesn't care about my dreams or scent-matched mates. He claims what he wants without asking.
And what he wants is me.

This book has dark themes between love interests unlike other PoisonVerse books. This is part one of what has now become a trilogy that exists in the larger PoisonVerse Universe!

I am ravenous for the broken, unstable, and traumatized characters Marie Mackay crafts for her omegaverses. They're unconventional, unhinged, and just so interesting to read about.

This is the first installment of a three part series and I am desperate for the next one.

Shatter is a peculiar goldpack omega who enrolls in an academy in order to meet her scent matched pack. But before she can introduce herself, she catches the eye of Dusk Varis and inadvertently gets blackmailed by him to be his pack's omega.

Dusk and his packmates, Umbra and Ransom, are utterly taken with her. I loved how possessive they were in private and in public. Whereas Shatter is frustratingly yet rightfully stubborn in her situation. Prepare yourself for scenes of dub con, non con, body betrayal, self harm, and to be so freaking exasperated that you begin to feel stir crazy. I just wanted to shake Shatter but also continue reading haha.

I have a theory on what the characters' secrets and histories will be! I do think the way the backstories are hinted at isn't as polished as it could be, but the intrigue is successfully planted.

Overall, I think this was solid and I can't wait to continue with the next installments.

Rating 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars.

I received an arc of this book, however all thoughts are my own

Marie Mackay quickly made it to the top of my autobuy Omegaverse list with Sweetheart, and Shattered Omega just cemented that #1 spot!

This novel is part of what Marie has coined PoisonVerse Noir, which is a darker and grittier universe than the original PoisonVerse world of her previous novels.

This is the first in a three-part series, in which we follow an Omega named Shatter as she embarks on a mission to find her scent match pack in the hopes that they will save her from the miserable future she's been told she is destined to experience--reason being, she has no memory of her life before the age of 19. She only remembers being kept in an estate where some sort of experimentation was taking place, in which she was a likely subject.

She was told that her biology is not that of a regular Omega, that her scent repels Alphas, and for her safety, her only option was to remain at the estate. One day she notices a pack of three Alphas at the estate and immediately scents them as her matches, but scent blockers prevent them from also discovering this. She decides her only chance at freedom and a normal life would be to run away and find her matches.

She follows them to an elite academy, with nothing but a fake identity and hope to get her foot in the door. But all her plans go out the window when she sneaks into a dorm room to steal scent blockers from the wrong alpha. The rest would be spoiler territory, so I will leave it at that to keep it interesting!

I will say however, that we will have three primary Alphas involved, Dusk, Umbra, and Ransom, and Shatter isn't the only one with a past full of secrets and shaky memories.

As always, Marie delivers a highly addictive, fast-paced story, with twists and turns at every corner. When it comes to the alphas, you'll want to slap one, hug another, but let them all have their way with you! I can't wait for part two and three!

Read this if you like: why choose Omegaverse, dark romance, suspense, morally gray alphas, found family, caretaking, secret identities, and kink exploration (amongst other things). Please check TW.

Shattered Omega, part one, will be published on the one-year anniversary of the publication of the very first PoisonVerse novel, Havoc Killed Her Alpha, which was also written by Mackay. The PoisonVerse novels have ushered in a whole new world of omegaverse novels over this past year because they’ve all been so good. In addition to the two novels Mackay wrote directly for the PoisonVerse, she also wrote two novellas and one two-part novel set in the PoisonVerse. Now she has gifted us Shattered Omega, which is set somewhere even darker and deeper than the regular PoisonVerse novels, in a subset she’s calling “PoisonVerse Noir”.

“PoisonVerse Noir” has all the PNR and omegaverse trappings of Mackay’s regular PoisonVerse novels, but seems to be rooted in something deeper, darker, and more mysterious.

This book is Mackays best work since the beginning of the PoisonVerse. Havoc Killed Her Alpha was one of my top 23 indie romances of 2023. We’re switching out the urban settings for an academy setting and delving into an unsettling and deadly side of bonds, auras, scents, and packs. Of course, no PoisonVerse novel would be complete without intrigue and scandal too, now would it?

Shatter, our FMC, is almost a feral omega. She’s fiercely intelligent, but she’s also ruled by her instincts and is shockingly naive for a 19 year-old. Dusk, Umbra, and Ransom are the MMCs in this book, and you’ll forgive me if I don’t share much of their story because that’s a whole box of spoiler rocks and I don’t want to spill them. You don’t get to see too much of Ransom in this book, but if you’re like me you’ll fall in love with conniving charmer Umbra and clever caretaker Dusk.

The spice is a 3 out of 3 on my scale for the hotness of the spice scenes and the kinks.

Do watch out for your TW/CWs, because while I don’t think they’re quite as dire as Mackay warns, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared. I also don’t get shocked by much, so I might have missed something. I just thought the whole thing was smokin’ hot. Just beware that cliffhanger! It’s a doozy.

I was provided a copy of this title by the author. All thoughts, opinions, views, and ideas expressed herein are mine and mine alone. No offer of compensation was asked for, nor provided in exchange for this review. Thank you.

I feel like because I read this in under 4 hours it should get a higher rating but honestly I just kept pushing through to get answers!

How am I more confused now than I was at the beginning? I have a feeling I won’t even be satisfied once I get my answers.

“I’m looking forward to all the ways I’m going to play with you.”

I’m rendered speechless. This was so good. I was utterly captivated by the plot, the drama, the mystery, the inner turmoil. It was a stay-up-too-late-and-damn-the-consequences read.
Once it got its claws in me, I could not force myself to put it down.

It is by far the darkest of Marie Mackay’s OVs, so make sure to check TWs at the beginning of the book. Or go in delightfully blind if you wish (always my favorite choice).

There is nothing soft and tender about the Alphas who claimed stole from her scent matches Shatter. They suffer no qualms about how they treat her. It is for her own good; she just doesn’t know it yet. Their behavior is definitely falling into the darkest side of ABO dynamics here. But it is strangely endearing, their OTT J/P natures.

The book is fast-burn and spicy. Even the interactions between the MCs are dark - there are noncon and dubcon scenes.

Killer cliffhanger ending. I cannot wait for book two.

Genre: Dark Omegaverse Romance
Tropes/Features: academy, very dark elements, broken omega, broken alphas, blackmail, coercion, forced proximity, morally black, OTT J/P, virgin FMC, NC/DC
Narrator: Multiple 1st Person POV
Relationship Type: Why Choose MFMM, fast burn, spicy
Book Type/Ending: Part One of Three, cliffhanger ending
TW/CW: Available in book.

I don't even know how to explain how I feel about this book. It's one of those where you just can't put it into words.

Marie Mackay continues to give books that are just so good. I freaking love me some omegaverse, and the world she creates is so different from other omegaverse series and I just can't ever get enough. Her characters are so wildly unique. Like Shatter?? I'm so obsessed with her (and her name tbh) because I've never read another character like her.

Being inside Shatters' head was so chaotic. Actually all of the povs were chaotic as hell but some really just stood out about Shatter. She just so broken. You could feel all her tension and anguish through her pov. You almost needed to put the book down a couple of times from the pretty intense emotions you felt from just her alone.

Absolutely my new favorite omegaverse without a doubt.

Ok I’m intrigued. There’s so many things the reader is left in the dark about (almost too many to the point of annoyance), that I couldn’t stop reading. I couldn’t help but love Shatter. Although I wasn’t a fan of Dusk and how he went about things in the beginning, he is growing on me too. Loved Umbra and I can’t wait to see more of Ransom. I’m very curious to see where this story goes in the next book!

Did not Disappoint!
Ok so I haven’t read a Marie Mackay book before or any of the poison verse books but this one called to me with it’s dark content and honestly I loved it! 💜
There are definitely dark elements in their (dub-con, body betrayal, blackmail etc) so do check your TWs but there’s a great mystery element j there as well, like why are these alphas and our FMC so different?
I like that Shatter, our FMC, is a little different - she’s almost feral and definitely not what you would expect. She’s also hiding her true status (gold eyes) which I understand is something bad. (I think this is the poison verse world - I understand it without having read the others but you may have a better appreciation of it if you have read that world) and that her scent does something a little bit different 😳😳
Despite not being her fated mates she’s drawn the eyes of Dusk and Umbra who are totally enamoured with her 😍 although they certainly show their love for her in unique ways…I’m desperate to find out more about Ransom aswell!
A great mix of darkness, desire and danger here!

I received an ARC from the author.

Wow! Amazing book as usual from Marie Mackay.
It’s a bit darker than her usual books, but fits really nicely within the PoisenVerse universe.
The first two chapters were a bit shocking, but after getting some insights into the characters, I really got into the story and I absolutely loved it.
There are a lot of flashbacks that give hints about the MCs’ past. There’s a lot of intrigue and mystery surrounding all the main characters. It’s so interesting and exciting to see how Shatter and the guys grow closer in these circumstances.
I can’t wait for book 2 and 3!

DNF 68%. After the r@pe scene the FL neither properly mentions it again in terms of bitter unwillingness and is instead just horny for the memories now. And the ML should know better than to use force on someone who is so obviously unwilling as someone who’s been traumatized by much the same himself before. I was not ok with the lack of assault acknowledgment or meaningful feeling from it. Look, I love this writers Omegaverse world build. It’s unique and cool and definitely takes it a step further and makes it their own… but this author is officially on my sht list for life and I will never be prevailed upon to read another novel by her again. 💀

5/5 ⭐️
Steam: 3.5/5
Strong Language: 2.5/5
Characters: 5/5
Plot: 5/5

Shattered Omega is book one in the PoisonVerse Noir series by Marie Mackay. It can be read independently of the other PoisonVerse series books. It ends on a significant cliffhanger.

Shatter is an Omega on the run: from her past, her memories, and the estate where she was being held because she’s a gold pack Omega. She escaped because she believes she has found her scent-matched pack and is desperate to have them claim her believing this will give her the answers she seeks.

Shatter’s plans to meet her mates are casually and brutally interrupted by the Kingsman pack. Dash, Umbra, and Ransom are broken Alphas. All have been through traumatic events and each is scarred in his own way. They are at Rookwood Academy, not for knowledge or an Omega, but for vengeance. That rage just so happens to be directed at Shatter’s intended mates. Stealing Shatter from underneath her mates’ noses is an added bonus but what starts out as an enemies to lovers arrangement quickly catches fire and feelings.

Shatter’s goal is escape. The Kingsman pack seek to devour the Omega they didn’t know they were looking for. Now that they have her, they’re not letting her go no matter the cost.

This is a dark themed Omegaverse that grips you from the beginning. The characters are vividly brought to life and with each chapter you become more engrossed and invested in their stories. The push-pull between Shatter and Dash was explosive. Umbra’s cinnamon-roll brand of disturbed was endearing and Ransom’s feral Alpha will pull on your heart strings.

From page 1 - instantly hooked! 🤩

The way I inhaled this story. Just sucked it down, with very little breath in between, NEEDING more like the greedy little omega I pretend I am.

PoisonVerse is, without a doubt, my absolute favorite Omegaverse series. And I think I will continue saying this for a while bc it has yet to let me down and only continues to improve and pique my interest with each new installment. While all the books in this series individually had their intriguing moments that captured me enough to want to devour the rest of the story, this is the only one that had me instantly hooked. Like I’m talkin’ within the first few paragraphs. Havoc was a close second to where I was all in by the end of the first chapter and that’s saying something bc I really do have an unhealthy obsession with Havoc and her story. 🫣😅

I could not turn the pages fast enough but at the same time, I didn’t fly through it. I fully engrossed myself in it, taking in and savoring every last word.

I feel like I relate the most to Shatter out of all of the other FMC’s in this series. Her approach with most things (especially in social settings) had me feeling so much empathy. The amount of secondhand embarrassment and feelings of insecurity that I felt WITH her, my goodness! 😱

From her internal questions of what is socially acceptable, to her over-thinking. Even the countdown of the appropriate time to enter a room, trying to weigh the balance of not looking desperate or be too late which might draw even more attention. Then with Shatter not wanting to impact someone's social standing in a negative way so you give them the option to back out all together. Ugh, been there, done that, felt it all the more deeply with her here.

I feel like the guys will be able to help her overcome these insecurities as they make her see just how special she really is. That she shouldn’t hide what makes her different and uniquely ‘Shatter’ and to not let others' perceptions of her bring her down. I can see them giving her all the love she needs if she opens up to them more and gives them the chance. 🥹

Dusk has this way about him to where he makes you look past his seemingly red flags and want to root for him. His pov definitely helps with this but I think you could even look outside of that and see he’s not one to just do nice things for people he doesn’t like. So everything said and done for Shatter isn’t questioned as having ulterior motives. He truly does what he deems best for Shatter and is completely into her though I can see where her insecurities make her question this. I’m hoping Shatter will work past her doubts to see just how true his words and feelings are.

Umbra is my fav! While his internal energy can be all over the place, he’s got such a sweetness to him with an underlying need to be loved and comforted that I just adore all the more. Add that in with his easy going attitude, insanely unfair deals (though hilarious, poor Shatter, Dusk did warn her) and his sweet obsession with Shatter, it’s not hard to see why I LOVE HIS CHAOTIC SOUL so much and just want to give him all the cuddles! 🥰

Ransom is a mystery as there are still a lot of questions surrounding him. We don’t get much interaction with him just yet but I am so intrigued by how he even got into this predicament he is currently in. I’m excited to learn more of his backstory in how he even became a part of this pack and even more excited for him and Shatter to finally meet. Eek!

So anxious to see where this all goes from here. Will Shatter stay and meet Ransom? Will she see (or want to see) that maybe there might be a different option beyond her scent match? And so many more questions I have floating around in my mind that I can’t wait til I can jump into the next installment! 🙌

I Devoured this book in one sitting and immediately started book two! This Omegaverse was all consuming and I am still in a haze now that I've come up for air and am left waiting for part 3 to come out.

This book is DARK in all the best possible ways it takes place in college, there are forgotten memories to uncover, dark & princess bonds, secrets, cruel & unstable alphas, blackmail ughhh its just all-consuming and one of the best Omega series I have read.

Shatter is a Omega in hiding because she is gold pact and she is desperate to reveal herself and scent to her true Alpha scent matches, but before she can she is scooped up by another pack that she is desperate to get away from. Shatter is just a chaotic broken feral mess and you could just feel her desperation. Don't even get me started on the Aloof Kingsman pack! brutal, and unhinged and everything I love in my MMC's!

This is my first read by the author and I can't wait to read their backlist!

ARC review

Absolutely gripping. This is a devastating beginning to this series. My heart aches for my sweet Kingsman pack. Mackay writes the cruelest, sweetest, broken MMCs ever and I loved them all but I’m downright obsessed with these three, yes even Ransom. The mystery and suspense in this book is incredible. Im a ball of tension, frustration, and nerves from the first page to the last. The way she writes I always have a strong desire to immediately start from the beginning as soon as I’m done because it feels, like there is so much I might have missed, as well as an intense longing to be back with these characters. This story and connection unfolds painfully deliciously slowly, so that all the spicy moments are scorching hot. But don’t feel like it’s slow burn there is just a reason why Shatter is resistant. I sincerely hope she’s already working on book two because I need it!!

How is it possible mackays books can get better and better and better.

I’m not quite sure what I’m going to do until book 2 and 3 come out.

I really need to know what happens.

I got theories man. Lots of ideas. I have room keys lol

Ugh. I’m so interested to see how this escape gets fouled. Cas you know it’s about to be foiled by the one who shall wake up

Umbra is such an undercover puppy. Dusk is a mush too under all that darkness.

Loving this series sososososoooo much

★3/5! entertaining and interesting yet very confusing. it’s one of them books where you’re there for the plot and not the characters, the MCs personally just annoyed me. I’m not into the whole push and pull trope so that’s probably the reason I didn’t connect with the characters. Cliffhanger is what’s keeping me going because i need to know about a certain someone! hopefully they make the book better

Shatter (fitting name) is sweet, delightfully so.
Dusk and Umbra are f**ked up but with a good heart and love for her.
The lore omegaverse is well researched, but I didn’t enjoyed the medical experiments part.

COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! So addicting. I need book 2 now.

Shatter is an unbounded, unhinged, goldpack omega. She's got no memory of her life before she was 19. She's basically feral but she's scented her mates(Lincoln pack) and determined to connect with them. Unfortunately for her the Kingsman pack of equally broken alphas isn't going to let her mates get a whiff of her intoxicating but deadly scent.

Yall..I can feel this is only the beginning of a wild ride. I'm scared. But also I need to see Ransom. I need to see her choose them. I need the truth of this other pack to come out and the bigger evil operation exposed. I need justice for these poor souls.

The spice is... intense. 3.5/4🌶
Check trigger warnings. Lots of dub/con. Lots of "punishments". Bully/brat. Breath play. Spanking. Edging. Alphaholes. Basically everyone is broken and unsure how to be normal. Lol

Thank you Marie Mackay for the opportunity to arc read your book.

Dark Omegaverse

Strong stubborn heroine
Alpha held bent on making her his
Longing - heroine wants to be with her scent matched mates
Manipulation - alphas do everything to keep her
Bdsm - spanking - spicy scenes
Good plot

I look forward to next book

Meh. Far too many secrets from the reader to make a lick of sense. Felt it could have been one book if we weren’t getting told every other sentence how broken the main character was all the time. Spice scenes were descent. Most likely won’t read the sequel.

I stopped at 29%. Couldn't read anymore

This first book in the series for me is a 2 star rating, tops.

I had to stop reading at 29% as that was my limit. I just couldn't keep going. I don't know if it's the storyline or the incessant whining of Shatter. I understand she's an omega and "need" an alpha, but every page was her constant whining about them not being her alphas and just behaving like a spoiled petulant child to me. I find it hard to read books where the FMC is portrayed to be a weak whimpering fool and always complaining about the same thing over and over.

The genre itself doesn't bother me. I love me some dark twisted romance novels/series, unfrotunely, this one was a no for me. There will be no continuing of this series.

I am OBSESSED with this group of characters! Umbra, Dusk, and Shatter has such a nuanced and interesting dynamic between them, and then Ransom??

I love a scent match story. I love a TWISTED scent match story even more. And with these possessive alphas? You just know the twists are going to keep on coming.

5/5 stars!!

Oh. My. God.

First of all, the Sweetheart Duet was in my top 10 fave omegaverses of 2023 and I have been dying to get my hands on this Poisonverse Noir book.. and it did not dissapoint.

These characters are so different and so broken and so… odd. And I feel so many things for them. Dusk and Umber are dealing with a broken alpha.. Shatter is… well.. shattered. She is blackmailed by Dusk and Umbra into not being able to be with her scent-matched pack because Dusk sees her before she meets her pack officially and decides she. Is. THEIRS.

So he blackmails her into being with his pack, or else hes going to expose her gold pack status.

And Shatter? She’s also got some issues… mainly her scent makes Alpha’s super angry and she is also a bit eccentric.. like wanting the squares tilted in her room and other things. Things that Dusk, especially, notices and works to accommodate for her. honestly? I love him. He’s totally obsessed with her and im FERAL for both him and Umbra… but Dusk wants his pack mate to get better.. hes basically totally shut down at this point and he just *knows* that Shatter is the perfect omega for their pack and will help bring his brother back.

So yeah.. is this stuff dark? Absolutely. Is it WONDERFUL? 10000%. Am I freaking literally dying for book 2? Fuck, yes. Ugh.. I cant WAIT. Im absolutely buying a physical copy of this book.
