He's a Hunter of Many Treasures 😉
3.5 stars - I liked Cornelia and Ethan's book. There's some mystery, action, and a pair of aunts that had me laughing at their unfiltered musings on more than one occasion.
There are shenanigans afoot, but they are less sinister than the other stories in this series. That is, unless you are on the receiving end of some of the bitter wagging tongues, which seem intent on spearing Cornelia.
I do love how Ethan stands up for Cornelia on a couple of occasions.
Ah yes, the little misdirection. The odds of successfully pulling off the ruse are... well, if you count them falling for it... good. 😉😄
I received an author's copy of the audio book, which I listened while reading along. The narrator is Gareth J Davies. I enjoy his accents and the general cadence of his voice. The sound effects are amusing.

Archaeologist and explorer Ethan Burnell has no intention of staying in England for long and is eager to return to his exploration in the Yucatan as soon as he’s able. He has even less interest in finding a wife, despite his sister’s best efforts. She’s hosting a Christmas house party and has invited several ladies of marriageable age, leaving Ethan feeling a bit cornered.
Cornelia Mortmain has no marriage prospects, though she had hoped once to find a true partner. Now widowed and faced with scandal thanks to her mother’s escapades as well as the circumstances of her late husband’s death, that hope is shriveling. Brash American Ethan Burnell is precisely the type of man she generally avoids, but there’s the slightest chance that his interest in her could increase the level of interest she receives from other men. On the off chance of this being helpful for her, Cornelia grudgingly agrees to Ethan’s scheme to protect himself from the marriage-minded mamas and daughters in attendance at the party. Now he and Cornelia must simply convince the guests of their undying love for one another.
This was a fast-paced romp with a rather starchy heroine and a hero with no interest in marriage, or so he thinks. Their attraction is rather instant, but it also builds upon a connection they had forged as children, so I thought this was a neat way to feature the childhood friends to lovers trope in with a fake relationship. This book maintains a hint of gothic feel and the narration pulled me into the story quite well. Cornelia was a bit difficult to like thanks to her tendency toward snappishness and yet, this prickliness was something that made her very relatable for me and made perfect sense given everything she’d been through thanks to her mother’s and her late husband’s scandals. Ethan was a bit ramshackle in his courtship and it took a while for him to get his head on straight and realize what he truly did want from life as far as relationships go. Fortunately, Cornelia was a match for him in every way and refused to settle for less than everything he had to offer and an equal partnership. I loved that she stood up for herself and her two aunts were fabulous supporting characters to a charming, fast-paced story.

Ethan Burnell is an explorer who has just returned from the jungles of Mexico & is preparing for an exhibition of some of his finds at the British Museum when he’s held up by a tape measure wielding woman, who thinks he’s a thief. Cornelia Mortmain’s name's mired in scandals not of her making but mud sticks, she a volunteer worker at the museum, when she sneaks in to the room housing the latest exhibition she didn’t expect to find a thief. At the opening of his exhibition Ethan discovers he knew Cornelia & her two aunts Eustacia & Blanche years ago, so he invites them to a Christmas house party at his sister Rosamund’s country residence Studborne Abbey.
A fun, entertaining well written story think of Indiana Jones at a Downton Abbey house party wearing Hessians - I just loved it. I loved both Ethan & Cornelia, their attraction just grew & grew, there were also hilarious elderly aunts & an inquisitive dog, Minnie & a marchioness with a wonderful vocabulary. An engrossing, captivating read

Set at Christmas, this passionate romance is full of intrigue, fun and romance. I love that the characters are flawed and that they are realistic about their place in society. The hero is one of the many men of nobility who loses themselves to scientific pursuits and has little time for women and marriage. He is especially not interested in the silly debutantes his sister puts in front of him. But the sparks fly when he agrees to a fake engagement to a widow who must accept the scandal of her mother's past. This is atmospheric, deeper-than-the-usual regency tale and there is even a mystery to be solved. A great, short holiday romp!

Just for the record, I've never read a book by Emmanuelle de Maupassant that I have not thoroughly enjoyed, and 'The Lady's Guide to Scandal' is no exception! There are several books in 'The Lady's Guide' series and they all refer to a little book which assists ladies by giving very sage advice on how to handle various situations in life. When I read these pieces of advice, along with the heroine, they usually make me laugh. If Emmanuelle's heroine were prim and proper ladies with milk-toast personalities they could be taken literally. But the heroine, aka Cornelia, is very strong-willed and employed. A woman ahead of her time, these pieces of advice are open to interpretation as needed. LOL Unfortunately, she finds herself in situations that have sullied her name through no fault of her own. She and Ethan were friends when they were younger and, as life often happens, took separate paths. Cornelia employed at the Museum and Ethan an explorer recently returned from the jungles in Mexico. When they meet again, it's a bit of a shock. Especially when Cornelia snuck into a room at the Museum, where she volunteers, and she finds what she believes to be a thief!! Some of the antics between these two on top of the side characters, which include elderly aunts and a dog, had me laughing until tears rolled. This was a great adventure with all the chemistry that comes along with a story that bring two people together.

Wonderful story of Cornelia Mortmain, a lady with a besmirched reputation and Ethan Burnell, American explorer with a sister trying to get him to marry. With the intent of helping each other, they pretend to be courting. Loved these characters and the interactions were often quite funny. Part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

The scene with Minnie and the toupée....omigosh, I'm still giggling!! This was such a wonderful and fun story to read. I loved the main characters, Ethan and Cornelia, as well as her two aunts, what a hoot they are!!
Cornelia is a widow, having endured a horrible marriage and vowing to never let a man rule her life again. Also, because of her mother's scandal, she's the one who is suffering the backlash and doesn't think anyone would want her. Ethan is an explorer who vows never to marry or have children, never wanting to put a woman through what his mother went through with his dastardly father. When the two meet (which is worth a few giggles in itself), emotions get involved and no matter how much they fight it, they are truly meant for each other.
I always enjoy this author's stories and this one doesn't disappoint either!

Again, a little masterpiece by Emmanuelle de Maupassant.
The fast-paced story revolves around the excavations of ruins in South America and the moral question whether the pillage of antiquities by the European museums is justifiable or reprehensible.
Two childhood friends who, decades later, share only the vaguest memories. An overbearing archaeologist who intends to remain a bachelor and a beautiful young widow who obstinately protects her independence and her heart against his intentions to use her as a shield against matchmaking mamas, sparks fly in every direction.

Destiny Brings Them Together:
Exciting and fun sizzling romance with a bit of mystery story.
A truly fun and sexy story of two old friends that meet up in a most unusual way.
It doesn't take long for a slow seduction to start and fire up an old friendship.
A wonderful magic sleigh ride made this story a joy to read..
Lots of humor, charismatic characters and so much more.
A happy ending without any cliff hangers.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this excellent book. It has terrific characters, very warm and realistic. The plot is engaging, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you turning the next page. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a great book.

Prologue occurred in Yucatan Mexico 1897. Story
continued in England from Dec. 1903, onward. This
had 1 sex scene (others implied), I could take or
leave the brief mystery aspect. 4 stars b/c I liked
this couple.
American Mrs. Burnell brought her dtr. Rosamund
(hereafter "Rosie") & son Ethan to England. Her
spouse sent someone to return Ethan only to Texas.
Sire and son had a strained relationship & Ethan, as
revenge, vowed to never wed, never father a child.
Cornelia & her Aunts Eustacia & Blanche met single
Rosie yrs ago, on a trip to the sea. Ethan was there
too. The aunts exchanged correspondence w/
Rosie, thereafter.
1903. Archeologist/ explorer Ethan met Cornelia
( hereafter Corn) again. Who he later learned
volunteered to catalogue artifacts at the British
museum. A few days later Ethan ran into Corn
and her witty aunts. The aunts learned that Rosie
and her spouse the duke were hosting a house
party. The aunts invited themselves. Ethan & Corn
tentatively agreed (?) to a faux attachment so ladies
would leave him alone. Corn, unhappily wed and
then widowed, distrusted men. Also her late mom
had created a scandal.
House party. IMO the 2 aunts were the heart of the story.
Some catty women tried to insult Corn & claim charming,
wealthy Ethan. Some engaged in flirty ways & too much
innuendo. The baron was a mess.
I liked the push/ pull of the MCs and their convos.
Cornelia made clear she'd not just settle. He couldn't
bring a woman to the dangerous areas he explored.
Could they compromise?

Entertaining novella set over a few weeks before Christmas. Returning, highly eligible, archaeologist Ethan encounters Cornelia who he last met when they were children. She is a widow, scorned by Society due to her mother's scandalous elopement, and her own unfortunate and unsuccessful marriage. He has no wish for marriage or permanent entanglements, but to escape the daughters of marriage-seeking mamas, he pretends a prior attachment to Cornelia. The result of this pretended romance turns both their lives upside down, as the other Christmas house-party guests sneer and insult Cornelia and their daughters pursue Ethan. Only honesty and acceptance of their own feelings and hurts can save them.

I first read this book in the Christmas collection last November titled Have Yourself A Merry Little Scandal. I remember giving the story four stars. I gave it four stars because, honestly, it was an enormous collection of novellas, and I think I became overwhelmed. I found it hard to fairly give five stars with so many works vying for attention. I enjoyed this book even more, the second time around! Without the distraction of so many different plots, this story was bright. It was a shining gem of a Christmas love story.
This book stood out for two reasons. The first was the solidity and strength of the two main characters. Both Ethan and Cornelia were vibrant and intelligently written. Loving care and thought were used in the creation of the characters. I loved Ethan, the American archaeologist. Who doesn’t love a sexy, intrepid explorer? He is larger than life. Being American, Ethan is refreshingly unique. Cornelia is a widow mired in a scandal that wasn’t her doing. She is stuck in a dull, repetitive life. She has been left behind as an afterthought when everyone she loves focuses only on their happiness. Cornelia is looking for adventure in life and love. The couple, however unlikely, clicked. They complimented each other perfectly in intelligence and passion.
The second reason the book stood out was the excellent plot. It was intelligent, quick, and sexy. The backgrounds of Ethan and Cornelia were well thought out and added validity to the main themes. This was a fast-paced, sensual, romantic love story set against an ordinary Christmas house party. The house party is a common theme, yet the storytelling breathed new life into a well-used situation.
The Lady’s Guide To Scandal is the fourth book in The Lady’s Guide series. I was unaware that this was a series the first time I read the book. Now that I know, I am going back to read them from the beginning. Ethan and Cornelia’s love story captured my heart. The characters, plot, and backdrop were fantastic. This was a thrilling, passionate journey that I didn’t want to end. The love story between Ethan and Cornelia proves that love can be born from heartache, scandal, and disappointment. This was an all-encompassing, intelligent, sensual, and turbulent adventure that will please even the most discerning of a reader!

The second reason the book stood out was the excellent plot. It was intelligent, quick, and sexy. The backgrounds of Ethan and Cornelia were well thought out and added validity to the main themes. This was a fast-paced, sensual, romantic love story set against an ordinary Christmas house party. The house party is a common theme, yet the storytelling breathed new life into a well-used situation.
The Lady’s Guide To Scandal is the fourth book in The Lady’s Guide series. I was unaware that this was a series the first time I read the book. Now that I know, I am going back to read them from the beginning. Ethan and Cornelia’s love story captured my heart. The characters, plot, and backdrop were fantastic. This was a thrilling, passionate journey that I didn’t want to end. The love story between Ethan and Cornelia proves that love can be born from heartache, scandal, and disappointment. This was an all-encompassing, intelligent, sensual, and turbulent adventure that will please even the most discerning of a reader!

I loved the humour running through the book and the embarrassing moments for Cornelia. It really added to the story and had me laughing. All the characters felt real and even Cornelia's dog Minnie had an important part to play in the story. It was entertaining and a lot of fun. I liked the fact they had been inseparable friends for one summer when they were kids and had got along really well and how it happened again as adults when they meet again whether they like it or not. Though they had spent a lifetime apart in some ways it didn't feel like it. It was like they started up where they left off. Towards the end of the book, Ethan, when he finds Cornelia, he deliberately repeats something he did as a kid showing that he remembered their time together. I thought that sweet. You end up feeling they were destined to be together (if you believe in that kind of thing). Also they both had endured situations which could have ultimately ruined their lives so it was so satisfying that they should overcome them to find happiness with each other. I very much enjoyed this feel good story.

The reason I gave this rating is because the setup of pretend courtship for their mutual benefit isn't quite original. Another thing is Ethan's views on marriage and fatherhood, which reminds me of a certain historical romance novel that has its own series.
The setting was close to Christmas but the festivities were toned down. Cornelia has a past, a scandal attached to her and the sad part is none of it was her fault.
Her first encounter with Ethan was amusing and I like that the author was able to inject some humor in the story.
Even though they're in the country, the London "ladies" are as catty and shallow as ever. They're annoying.
This happened in a short span of time and in that there was a simmering attraction and chemistry. Cornelia is one of a kind and is quite independent and she and Ethan matched very well due to their interests.
Like all good stories, of course there's a conflict and the spoiler I can give is this one ends happily.

Nellie has found what she was missing.
Cornelia I must say is a great character she is very strong-willed and not proper at all I loved her. Ethan, the explorer, is truly awesome too. I loved the banter between them and this fake romance I bet will bite them both in the you know where! I loved the fact there was a bit of mystery with some sweet steam. Part of this book will have you laughing out loud I adore the author style of writing. This was such a good story, and I was rather sad when it ended. I am happy to recommend this charmer. Ethan Burnell discovered Palekmul and brought the artifacts to the British Museum in London. Cornelia Mort-main volunteered at the Museum and decided to see if she could sneak in and see the Palekmul exhibit room. When she got there a door was unlocked and she snuck in and thought she saw the trying to steal something. She took a piece of wood out of her pocket help her think she had a gun and for him to lay down on the floor then she went to the time of and he got hold of her and got her on the floor and she discovered it was Ethan Burnell. Ms. De Maupassant has written an excellent book which is easy to read and is quite enjoyable...

Ethan knew Cornelia when they were children, and knowing his sister is plotting to find him a wife, concocts a plan for he and Cornelia to have formed an affection, but it puts her under the spotlight she wants to avoid.

As with some other books written by this author which have "The Lady's Guide to..." in their titles, this one also refers to a book which seems to assist ladies by giving them most interesting advice on how to handle the various situations in their lives - hence the title.
This particular story is about Cornelia and Ethan who were friends when they were much younger and later meet in a very interesting situation in the Museum where Cornelia works. The story takes off from there and has a very satisfactory ending - what happens in between kept me glued to the pages.
These two characters both seem to be headstrong in the beginning but as they grow to like each other, they begin to understand each other and love with all it's complexities rears its head.

Another novella from Have Yourself a Merry Little Scandal. This was fine but I never really connected with either character. I enjoyed it while reading but never felt any urge to pick it up again.

First off just let me say you will never go wrong with a book by Emmanuelle. I have read a lot of her books and they all have Intrigue, mystery, steamy couples, and fun and humor too.
Ethan Burnell is an adventurer from Texas who has made a name for himself in the jungles of Mexico and his discoveries. When he returns to London to oversee his work at the British Museum
the last thing he looking for is a wife. Unfortunately, his sister, Cornelia now the Duchess of Studborne has other ideas. She is sure her brother just needs a wife to make him settle down and stop going off to strange places. Along with her husband the Duke they plan a Christmas party alone with young ladies and their mothers at their estate, Studborne Abbey. The last thing Ethan wants is a bunch of Ladies trying to marry off their daughter to him!! He would rather be back in the Jungles.

Cornelia is a woman whose life is surrounded by scandal not of her own making. Her mother and deceased husband were responsible for that. Yet society looked down on her as if she were culpable. Working at the museum cleaning fragments of ancient items, labeling them, made her think of faraway places exploring and discovering new historical items and cultures of the past. As a woman this would never be. While secrectly entering a new exhibit at the museum she accidentally met the honored guest of the museum highly acclaimed explorer and archeologist Ethan Burnell. Cornelia lived with her two spinster aunts and they remembered Ethan from when he was a boy playing on the beach with Cornelia. Ethan remembered and invited them to his sister's home for the Christmas holidays. Ethan recommended that Cornelia be his fake girlfriend. This way he could ward off the single young women his sister invited to entice him to marry. But somewhere over the house party feelings were developing between Ethan and Cornelia. Ethan had suffered under his father and had decided long ago never to marry and never to have children. Of course, this was the opposite of what Cornelia wanted. They were at an impasse. A very good story. I just felt there was a thread that was not tied up. Ethan's brother-in-law agreed to explore the underground of the abbey after the first of the year. I never found out what the result of that was. Otherwise, I would have rated this a five.

4 STARS, HISTORICAL ROMANCE DRAMA, EARLY 1900'S
This book has a great blurb that describes the plot very well, so I will not repeat it. Ethan & Cornelia, fall into each other's presence after almost 20 years apart & they have each been holding back portions of themselves in fear of final rejection. Of course, they don't openly admit this to anyone, including them.
I find this to have great character details & is well written & some characters are returning from other books of this series. I only gave it 4 STARS instead of 5 STARS, because I felt Cornelia, in the new. 20th Century women were fighting to stand up for other women, especially in London, besides, she did work a progressive role for women, to be such a timid thing. Furthermore, she had been under those fantastic aunts at the beach cottage every summer & they were free spirits, not to forget the cousin who posed nude with all the jewels that came with the title, on her Lord's desk being served by handsome footmen, glasses of champagne. It is incredibly inconceivable that even if one had been married off, husband died a jerk, that still 5 years would pass with Cornelia being as timid. The author herself helped make up my mind in the aunts actions, it just doesn't relate these wonderful ladies would have just let 5 years roll by with Cornelia just kinda frozen in life. On the other hand it is fiction & I get to involved with the stories I read.

A Lady's Guide to Scandal is number four in the series of A Lady's Guide and I think it might be my favourite so far. Each can be read as a standalone and in any order.
Cornelia is trying to become her own person and move forward with her life after scandal which leaves her somewhat an outsider in society. She lives with her delightful aunts, Blanche and Eustacia and her sweet dog, Minnie. Thanks to her father’s connections she is able to volunteer at the museum.
Cornelia’s aunts had me in fits of giggles. Two cheeky ladies with hearts of gold the sort of aunts every little girl would love.
Cornelia and Ethan are brought together at the beginning of the story (although not for the first time in their lives) at the museum.
Archaeologist Ethan Brundell is a charming, charismatic but also infuriating man.
Emmanuelle is brilliant at weaving a wonderful tale. I am always so excited to find out what happens, but I also don’t want it to end. I think these are possibly two of her best characters.
As always with Emmanuelle’s writing the sex scenes and the romance never come at the cost of the characters or the plot. They aren’t forced but expertly entwined into the story.
This read really does have it all, romance, love, passion, and a mystery!

Boring, and occasionally overdone. I really didn't like this book but I can see that someone might want to read it as a quick fluff. This is my second or third of Emmanuelle's books and I think I need to admit that her writing is just not for me. At least the MMCs in this book weren't as frustrating as the last one of hers I read. Though there were two secondary characters that were ridiculously bold and distracted from any believability. A house party should contain characters the hosts actually like. Not two over-sexed and rude villains (or whatever you want to call them). Communication between the MMCs was lacking but not in a way that intentionally adds angst. Apparently the FMC gives away her feelings at some point which I had missed, maybe twice since I went back quickly to see if the scene made sense. The love scenes are very descriptive but the characters made the scenes less interesting than they would otherwise be. I wonder if this author would be very good at writing erotica instead ... speculation and pondering on my part. I think I'm going to take another break from this author.
