A Marriage of Lies

Rate this book
Beneath the surface of every marriage there are secrets. This one is deadly.

My husband is lying. The minute he came home with alcohol on his breath and unable to look me in the eyes I knew it.

We used to be in love – the intense ‘I can’t be without you for a second’ kind. Where it hurts deep to be apart.

But now, we’re the couple that keep secrets from each other.

We hide the truth.

He thought I wouldn’t find out. I’m a detective – it’s literally my job to uncover clues and solve mysteries. I know what he did.

And now I’m sitting here, in a police interview, being asked the question ‘did you kill her?’ to which I utter one life-shattering ‘yes.’

A jaw-dropping, twist-filled emotional rollercoaster of a read for fans of Gone Girl, The Perfect Marriage, and The Girl on the Train.

Ever since reading “The Widow of Weeping Pines” (Mad Women series #2), I have been meaning to read about some more “mad women”-but ARC obligations have kept me from picking up another one of Amanda McKinney’s books. The solution? When “Marriage of Lies” was offered before publication date, I requested it! 😉

The synopsis lures us in by sharing with us that Rowan Velky’s husband Shep is lying, but that they used to be “THAT COUPLE”-you know the kind-the ‘I can’t be without you for a second kind”.

But now they are the kind who hide secrets from each other instead.

Now the only faithful companion living in her home with her is Banjo. 🐶 (Despite accompanying her to some dangerous situations, he will be fine.)

Rowan confides in us (First person POV) that Shep may have thought that she wouldn’t find out, but that she is a detective – it’s literally her job to uncover clues and solve mysteries.

She knows what he is up to.

So, how did she end up sitting in a police interview, answering the question ‘did you kill her?’ with a tremulous “YES”?

Did the pressure of her recent case, get to her???

The book opens with Detective Rowan Velky investigating a gruesome serial killer case with the Detective training under her, the town’s “most eligible bachelor”-Detective Kellen Palmer…

*****

It’s official!

Now that I have read a second book by this author, I can confirm that she writes short ADDICTIVE books, with quick “just one more” chapters that you will want to devour in a single sitting! This book is TWISTY, the pace is FAST, and it is definitely COMPULSIVE reading! As Amanda McKinney dropped clues in each of the opening chapters, I had no idea where this story was going and I couldn’t wait to find out!

I did eventually have a “guess” which proved to be correct, but I enjoyed seeing if my own detective skills would prove me right! The ending had a few time jumps which made it feel a bit rushed and prevented me from awarding 5 stars, but it was 5 star entertainment for most of the book!

I can’t wait to read more from this author-I am definitely a fan!

4.5🌟I devoured this book in one day! Can’t remember the last time I did that!

Rowan Velky is the lone homicide detective in a small suburb in Texas. She’s been tasked with training the new hire…the town heartthrob, Kellan.

Now, with three women murdered and their bodies mutilated, the two detectives suddenly face the prospect of a serial-killer running loose in their tiny town.

I loved how the story weaved through different perspectives. We have what appears to be completely unrelated stories that all ultimately converge in a shocking twist! Those are my favorite kind of thrillers. Where you are trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together...and it feels like you have two completely different puzzles in front of you.

The only reason I dropped a half-star was I’d hoped for a bit more from the ending. Somewhat lackluster after the entire twisty roller-coaster ride I just put myself through all day.

If you enjoyed Amanda McKinney’s series Mad Women, don’t miss out on this latest! Her thrillers just get better with each release!

In 2023 I cam across a book by Amanda McKinney, The Widow of Weeping Pines, that a few of my friends were giving their thumbs up to. I gave it a try and I found it delightfully disturbing. When I saw that Ms. McKinney had a new standalone available on NetGalley I couldn't resist grabbing a copy.

I'm pleased to report that she has delivered another read in one sitting twisty little book.

In this story we have Rowan Velkey, a police detective, looking into the mysterious murders of some wealthy women in their small Texas town. What sets these murders apart are that the letter "X" is carved into their bodies. One in their eyes, one in the palm of their hand, and another in their mouth. What is the message the murderer is trying to send to them?

With the help of her partner, Kellan, they are about to find out.

I don't want to say much more plot-wise in fear of spilling any secrets. There are definitely some unexpected twists in this one. The pacing was on point with short and sweet chapters which I always appreciate. Rowan was a likeable protagonist that I was rooting for. Where this book faltered a bit, for me anyways, is with the ending. I expected a little more. The final denouement seemed so obvious from the beginning that I was sure I had to be wrong. Especially since she had already taken me by surprise a few times with her cleverly played misdirection that I thought this can't be it. Not possible. However it was and it is and that was a bit of a let down. Still, I had a heck of a time reading this book and gobbled it up in nearly one sitting. 4 stars!

TW: Please be aware that child abuse and neglect are a prevalent theme throughout the story for those that are sensitive to those subject matters.

Thankyou to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for my complimentary copy.

I think I started off liking this book more than I did when it ended… I loved our main character of Rowan Velky and her backstory, but some of the other characters not so much. I also found this story to be quite predictable, which is okay- but it took away from the shock value that I was expecting.

In this story we have Rowan Velky who is an unhappily married homicide detective at the Blackbird Cove Police Department. Rowan’s husband, Shepherd hasn’t worked in months and her aunt who is currently battling dementia is living with them. Rowan is stressed out and overworked.

We also have alternating chapters of Amber in this story. Amber is Rowan’s therapist. Amber is yet another unhappy married woman. Not only is Amber unhappily married, but she just learned that her young son has some cognitive issues as well.

While we are learning about the lives of Rowan and Amber, there are three murders that take place in the town. Rowan is on the case to find out who and if there is a serial killer involved. All these women have distinct markings on them, so it appears that they must all be related somehow. But who will get to the bottom of these murders? And why were these women killed in the first place?

This was a fast-paced book that I did enjoy, I just didn’t love it. I did however, love the short chapters and Rowan’s character. Moving forward, I would love to read more about Rowan Velky and hope that there might be a sequel to this book!

An experienced detective living ninety minutes outside of Houston, Rowan Velky has just been presented with the most disturbing case of her career. Called to the wealthy neighborhood of Mirror Lakes, she is startled to find a young woman strangled to death and with X’s carved over her eyes. Just as Rowan and her team are getting down to business, however, a second body is found. And then a third. All with the same mark, just in a different location. Who is perpetrating these chilling crimes? And why were they killed?

Meanwhile, Rowan’s life isn’t all roses and sunbeams at home. In a loveless marriage, she and her husband, Shepherd, barely speak, let alone connect. After fifteen years together, though, she can’t imagine her life without him in it. Perhaps due to this or some internal battle, Rowan has begun to attend therapy on her own. Not that it seems to be doing much good. And as her work life becomes more complicated with the appearance of the FBI on the scene, Rowan starts to wonder: can she hold it together? Or is it all about to come horribly undone?

Oh. My. God. Give me a second while I wipe this s*** eating grin off of my face. From the shocking twists and turns to the dynamite cast, A Marriage of Lies took all of my expectations and threw them aside. Not once, as the plot unfolded before me, was I able to guess where it was all headed. Even better, the deliciously dark topics and blindingly fast pace meant that all I could do was hold on for what was a neck-snapping ride of suspense.

The plot itself initially felt somewhat like a bait and switch. Not exactly lining up with what I had expected, I was prepared to be let down in the end. Boy, was I wrong. Instead, this was one utterly thrilling storyline that could easily rival The Wife Between Us or The Last Mrs. Parrish. Not for the topic matter, but because of the earth-shattering twist that took a normal plot and turned it completely on its head. Trust me when I say, there’s no way you’re going to see through this about face. Brilliant and perfectly plotted, I was totally in awe.

As for the characters, they too were simply sublime. Engaging and realistic, I connected with most of them from the very first word. Granted, I had my favorites, but between the two primary POVs, they directed the plot in just the right direction to keep me blind to the truth. I particularly liked Rowan who was loyal to a fault as well as smart and intelligent. Well, for the most part… Just the same, her flaws made her come across as genuine as well as fully fleshed out.

The only piece to this dynamite novel that wasn’t pure perfection had to do with the ending. Not that it wasn’t superbly timed and smartly written. I just wish there had been a bit more of an exploration of what happened after the fact. Especially to the villain. At the same time, everything was wrapped up with one of those glorious neat, little bows that I love, so all in all, it wasn’t that big of a flaw.

Done and dusted, I’m now an ardent admirer of Ms. Amanda McKinney. The first of her books that I’ve read, she’s easily edged her way onto my auto-buy author list. After all, with ever ratcheting suspense, palpable tension, and an intricate plot, this psychologically acute thriller struck quite the perfect balance. In all honesty, McKinney just might be my new favorite queen of misdirection. Now I can’t wait for her next book to come out. Until then, I’ll have to settle for exploring her backlist ASAP. Rating of 5 stars.

**4.5-stars rounded up**

A Marriage of Lies is a tense Psychological Thriller from Amanda McKinney. I was seeing a lot of early buzz for this release and needed to find out what it was all about.

After reading it, in a day (!!!), I am so happy that I took a chance on a new-to-me author and have officially joined the Hype Train. I was left with whiplash after finishing this twisted tale of love, devious deception and lies.

I don't want to say anything about the plot. I knew nothing going in and that's what I would recommend.

I will say that I loved one of the main characters, Rowan, and her trusty companion, Banjo. Rowan is a Detective and I was pleasantly surprised to have an MC with that career leading the show here.

This also went pretty dark, as far as the crimes are concerned, and I definitely wasn't expecting that either!

As mentioned above, this is the first time I have read from Amanda McKinney, but I'm absolutely ready to pick up some more of her Thrillers. If they're anything like this, I know I'm in for a good time.

While I did find some aspects slightly predictable, particularly towards the end, that didn't diminish my enjoyment. Overall, I found it to be extremely engaging, as well as highly-readable and incredibly entertaining!

Thank you to the publisher, Storm Publishing, for providing me with a copy to read and review.

This was a delightful surprise!

EXCERPT: 'Mrs Velky,' Agent Briggs says, 'as I'm sure you're aware, this is pretty much a slam dunk case. By denying legal counsel, and by your continued silence on the matter, you are basically admitting guilt. Do you understand that?'
'Yes.'
'So, you are admitting guilt?' Zeal asks. 'Did you kill Cora Granger? Would you like to make a confession right now?'
'Yes.'
A moment of shocked silence fills the room.
I look up, my teary eyes as cold as ice.
'I killed Cora Granger.'

ABOUT 'A MARRIAGE OF LIES': Beneath the surface of every marriage there are secrets.

MY THOUGHTS: This is my third book by this author and, while I loved the other two I have read, A Marriage of Lies fell short for me. I didn't feel clever solving this mystery early on; I felt disappointed that between the book blurb and the first few chapters, the solution jumped out at me. The clues are all there in flashing neon. The only thing that kept me reading was the 'why?' and trying to figure out how all these people were connected.

The author doles out that information very sparingly initially, kind of like giving someone on a diet a little chocolate to keep them invested. It works.

The story is told mainly from the POV of Detective Rowan Velky and her therapist, Amber. There are occasional chapters presented by various other people. Rowan is a complicated character - she has had a bleak upbringing, one which brought her into contact with her husband, Shep. She cares for her aunt Jenny who has Alzheimers. Her marriage isn't great, yet Rowan feels indebted to Shep and is reluctant to end it despite her suspicions that Shep is playing away. This is only one of the reason's she is seeing a therapist.

The story moves along at a good pace, there is a great sense of place, and the mutilation of the bodies adds a certain frisson of tension. I really liked the why of it all, but the ending lets the whole book down. It was all too easy, too quick and quite deflated my balloon. There's also quite a bit of 'telling' rather than experiencing at the end.

I had another major niggle - the medical aspects of Connor's condition. Authors, please, if you are going to throw in a complicated medical condition - do your research. You need to get these things right.

I didn't think the sexually explicit scene between Rowan and Shep was necessary - in fact I found it quite gross. I don't normally mind sexually explicit scenes, but this felt like it had been inserted just to provide the obligatory sex scene.

Although this is a decent read (except for that one scene - pun intended), quick and easy, it could have been better.

Decent read but a little predictable. I think if the prologue had not been included I would have actually liked the book better, because it made me on the edge and looking for clues that I definitely wouldn't have been looking for otherwise.

Detective Rowan Velky is in a troubled marriage. But the two share a very tumultuous past so they are more bonded than it seems on the surface. Rowan is seeing Amber, a therapist who has her own marriage issues and other problems at home. Rowan begins work on a series of grisly murders, with women who are found with large X's over parts of their bodies. How are all of these people connected to the crimes?

This is a compulsively readable thriller, and the storyline is decent. Like I mentioned, I think the prologue does the book a bit of disservice because rather than making the book more intriguing, it actually acted as a spoiler so I was looking for twists throughout. And the last portion of the book with the reveals was not good for me, it was really outlandish and beyond my ability to believe.

Still, if you're looking for an entertaining read, this is a fast paced book that will hit the spot.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Whoa! My head is spinning. So many dang twists that I couldn’t keep up.

We are introduced to Rowan. A married detective in her 40’s. Meet Amber, Rowan’s married therapist. Both of these women are unhappily married. Their lives are a hot mess! Shoot, their husbands are a mess of their own.

Women are being murdered in their small community. Someone is placing X’s over the victim’s eyes and mouths. Someone is sending a message. A clear and direct message.

As Rowan and her new handsome partner gather leads into these grisly murders, there are other crazy things going on. Emotions start going wack! Who is committing these crimes? All the while, Rowan’s marriage is crumbling as she is trying to piece together what in the heck is going on.

Well, I COULD NOT PUT THIS DOWN! I blew through this in 24 hours. I’d get to the end of a chapter and 💥 BAM! What just happened? Wait what? I found myself going back and rereading real quick just in case I got it wrong. Nope, I read it right.

When it came to the last 15% of the book, it became all tell and no show. Ya dig? Everything is told in black and white. Anyone can do that. I love to be shown, not a lengthy telling of ‘ This is really what happened’. IDK, those just bother me. Another thing I noticed was Amber’s erratic behavior. What in tarnation? She’s a therapist for heaven’s sake. All that went right out the window. I’m not giving any spoilers, just her behavior in her character.

Over all, this was a fun read that I BLEW through! Full of heavy twists and turns! This might be for you. Read the other reviews because everyone is raving about it! Unfortunately, I’m the outlier as always, my dear friends. 😳 😳

Thank you to Storm Publishing, NetGalley, and the author for the opportunity. All opinions are my own.

Fantastic!

From the opening scene, I knew this one was a keeper.

They always say no one knows what is happening in a marriage and this story proves it.

A woman has been murdered and a detective is trying to find out who did it.

Rowan Velky, a local detective, and her partner, Kellan Palmer are the first detectives to enter a gruesome crime.

Who is behind the killing? Why?

Nothing else should be said about this one. The less you know the more entertained you will be.

Did I guess the big reveal, yep from the get-go but I don't feel like it took away any of my enjoyment.

The end was great!

Amanda McKinney is now on my radar.

Rowan and Shepherd Velky don’t have the best of marriages, he’s a liar and she knows it and they’re definitely keeping secrets from each other. Rowan is a homicide detective in Blackbird Cove, Texas, and much more used to being on the questioning side of the table. Now though, she has to answer them.

Wow. This is an absolute glued to the pages mystery thriller if ever there was one! It’s a belter, a strap yourself in twisty, fast paced rollercoaster of a plot and yes, as well as being furiously whizzed on the rollercoaster, your jaw will end up aching from the reveals. There are several good red herrings and mic drop moments which are filled with tension and suspense. It’s so easy to read, it’s well constructed with short short chapters and alternating points of view that flow and make the suspicion antenna twitch furiously from one to the other trying to figure out the connections. All the characters have good back stories, parts of which are sad and moving. Rowan and her detective partner. Kellan are very likeable and the chemistry is intriguing.

I just wish the ending would have had a bit more to it as it’s a tad disappointing after the terrific buildup, hence the four stars rather than five. However, overall, this is a one sit read, as I find it very hard to drag myself away from the enthralling plot, which has all the ingredients of a good mystery thriller. It’s a highly entertaining read which is my first from this author and it definitely won’t be my last.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Storm Publishing for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Audio length ~ 6 hours 41 minutes
Narrator ~ Elise Roth

Rowan is our detective and married to Shepherd. They met when they were in foster care together and have been married for 15 years.
Amber is our therapist who is not happy in her marriage to Mark. They share a special needs son, Connor.

Towards the end we get chapters from Rowan's Aunt Jenny, who is in her care and has Alzheimers, and her partner, Kellan, which I liked.

I can't say I was surprised with how the story played out, but I was fully captivated in this thriller. It's super fast paced and well written with a good mix of likable and unlikable characters.

Surprise, Surprise.

Billed as a domestic thriller, this was part police procedural and a whole heaping of domestic turmoil featuring several marriages.

The direction wasn’t as I expected and I applaud the author for taking a twisty route that kept me off balance. While I love stories about “wedded bliss” they can become a little routine if I read too many of them. This was anything but with a fresh take on a well traveled genre.

Damn! What a rollercoaster ride!

This was my first dive with this author and she did not disappoint!

This is my idea of how a psychological thriller should be written. Not only was it twisty, dizzying, and dark, but the interweaving story lines had me guessing all the way to the end. Also, what an incredible cast of characters. I found them all interesting. I was never bored. Throw in the short chapters and you’ve got yourself a winner! I kicked off a star for the same reason as many other reviewers - the ending. Still great, but could’ve been better.

There’s no shortage of thriller delights in this one - secrets, lies, jealousy, and murder - just to name a few. I simply cannot wait to dig into some of McKinney’s other books!

Fast-paced read with lots of disparate strands that seemingly aren’t connected until they are! Short, fast-paced chapters with lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing. I have three words for this book: fresh, fun and fantastic! I wasn’t sure what to expect from the synopsis, except for that it was about someone in a toxic marriage. Oh, but there is so much more…

Detective Rowan Velky works in a suburb outside of Houston, and she is the woman from the synopsis. Her husband, Shepherd, drinks too much, doesn’t work and emotionally neglects his wife - so she throws herself into her job. She has a crush on her coworker, Kellan, but doesn’t act on it. She and Shepherd may have an awful marriage, but they’ve been together since they were both children in foster care. Who else would want her and the baggage she carries?

Amber is our second main character, as she is Rowan’s therapist. Her best friend Emma is her child’s teacher, and she has a cold and distant husband named Mark who refuses to accept that their child has special needs, despite Emma sitting them both down for a serious talk about how to help him. Amber may be a therapist, but she’s dealing with some difficult issues of her own. She and Rowan are both good characters, and are both women struggling, with their marriages and life in general.

So you may be asking where is the mystery, the thrill? Oh, it’s there! Rowan gets news one night that a woman has been found murdered, rare for the area, and the killer left behind a very distinctive physical mark. She and Kellan are immediately on the case, but soon more women die, all with the same markings on their bodies, and the FBI kicks the local police to the side. Still, Rowan wants to know why these women were killed. What is the tying bond?

The murder mystery was great, the characters were written well, and the ending was fantastic with a huge twist that I didn’t see coming. This was also a thoughtful look at marriage, motherhood, infidelity and the criminal justice system. I definitely give this one my recommendation, and 4.5 stars.

(Thank you to Storm Publishing, Amanda McKinney and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on March 29, 2024.)

Happy Release Day!

4.5⭐ A Marriage of Lies is an engaging psychological thriller with an original plot, morally ambiguous characters, intricate twists, alternating perspectives, fast pacing, a page-turner, and a surprise ending. Rowan, a protagonist in the story, a homicide detective in a small Texas suburb, investigates the mysterious murders of wealthy women in the area. The pacing is just right with concise and to-the-point chapters. Rowan is a likable character, and the story takes unexpected turns involving secrets, mental illness, lies, jealousy, and murder. I don't want to spoil any surprises, so I won't say much more about the plot.

I enjoyed how the story intertwined multiple perspectives, leading to a surprising climax. This is what I love about thriller novels. Exciting Read! I highly recommend it.

Thank you to Amanda McKinney, Storm Publishing, and NetGalley for the eARC.

A MARRIAGE OF LIES had a fantastic premise and great cover—I requested it right away on NetGalley! The prologue set the stage for a compelling story that promised to be marked by an intriguing mystery and twists we would not see coming--fingers crossed. This is always my hope when I first pick up a new psychological thriller. Well, I can say without reservations of any kind that Amanda McKinney delivered in a very big way!! I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would, with its unique plot, realistic dialogue, superb character development, and shockingly devious twists that will make you rethink everything you believed going into this story. And to enjoy A MARRIAGE OF LIES to its fullest extent, the less you know about it, the more you’ll love it.

We are introduced to Detective Rowan Velky, our protagonist, who is a truly fantastic character—strong, intelligent, resilient, and devoted to a fault. And if I’m honest, anyone who loves her dog as much as Rowan loves her Banjo, I love, too!! The way Amanda wrote Rowan was brilliant, as well as how she wrote the other characters in this poignant story. Poignant because threaded intricately throughout this novel are serious topics that deserve to have our most fervent attention, one of those being Alzheimer’s and its devastating impact. (I won’t list any others here for fear it may give something away.) But I do want to say that one of my favorite characters was Rowan’s Aunt Jenny, suffering from Alzheimer’s, whose love for her niece is so incredibly endearing. And then there’s former Marine, Detective Kellan Palmer, Rowan’s partner, someone we all need in our lives—a source of strength, optimism, and compassion when life becomes just too hard.

There is a large cast of characters, some more likable than others, some downright despicable, but each developed fully in my opinion. The dialogue was fantastic, too, never stilted and so engaging. The multiple POVs were handled incredibly well, and with its short chapters, the pace of the book ran at lightning speed. I could not turn the pages fast enough. Had it not been for life’s mundane chores and needing to eat, I would have finished this book in one sitting!! I can’t wait to read my next book by this author!!

I want to thank NetGalley, Amanda McKinney, and Storm Publishing for gifting me the ARC of A MARRIAGE OF LIES! It was such a privilege to read this before publication. And I appreciate you trusting me with an honest review!

“I look up, my teary eyes as cold as ice. “I killed Cora Granger.”

Not one troubled marriage, but two, a serial killer, and a FMC with a traumatic past? Yes please! Rowan is a no nonsense detective who is loyal and dedicated annnndd she just confessed to murder. Umm What?

A week prior, Rowan is investigating a brutal murder where the killer has carved an X over the victim’s eyes. What does it mean? Meanwhile she’s also reevaluating her marriage via flashbacks of the beginning the relationship and how it progressed; it’s eye opening. They had a deep all encompassing life altering connection. Rowan still loves her husband Shepherd deeply but can’t stand to be touched by him; secrets have caused a rift. She unhappily suspects he’s having an affair, yet she also has feelings for her partner Kellan.

Amber is a caring psychologist who is concerned about her developmentally challenged son. She too, can’t connect with her husband anymore and is contemplating divorce. She finds the diary of a patient with troubling entries and worried about the anonymous author, Amber is determined to identify and help her.

A Marriage of Lies is the perfect blend of domestic drama, police procedural, and psychological thriller. Rowan and Amber are both compelling narrators with cringy behaviors and questionable motives, yet still completely relatable. After all, who can say they’ve NEVER done something for a less than stellar reason?

This is my first Amanda McKinney novel and I devoured it! The intense pacing, plot intricacies and psychological depth of characters is why I read this in one day. I grumbled a bit near the end. I was unhappy with some character decisions, while at the same time understanding them. Thought provoking morally grey complexities gave me book hangover AND made this a five star read. Do we really know the people we love; what would we do for them?

This book was AWESOME! It was my first by McKinney and wow did she deliver!

I loved the use of multiple narrators, flashbacks, and some bits of mixed media. Rowan was a complex character with a troubled past and sordid relationships. She was an excellent detective and I could feel her exhaustion and stress as she worked her investigation, tried to salvage her marriage, and take care of her ailing aunt. Her therapy sessions with Amber sometimes made me chuckle and sometimes made me cringe but every page brought something new and something important to the story.

I loved that this book kept me guessing, even when I had some pieces figured out. It starts out with a bang and the thrill doesn't let up! One twist had me saying "wait, what?" while another made me think "there it is!" and I absolutely loved how everything played out.

Based on the title, I expected this to be a domestic thriller and while there are elements of that, there's also so much more. I could totally see this spinning off into a series and I would be so here for it!

If you're like me and new to McKinney, this is certainly a stellar place to start! I'm excited to check out her other work! Thank you to Thriller Book Lover Promotions and Storm Publishing for the copy. This one releases March 28, 2024.

3.5 rounded up to 4 stars for me. This book was initially a solid 4 star for me, but the ending fell flat so I decreased to 3.5 stars. The entire story is full of twists and suspense and I could not put this book down. But then the ending the author changes the tune. The last part of the book is more of a explanation of this is what really happened instead of just letting in unfold. Still a solid psychological thriller that will be enjoyed by many.

Thanks to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I devoured this book in a single evening! Most of the story is told in Detective Rowan Velky's POV, and her character is so deep and so engrossing that she jumps off the page. I had to keep reading to know how her story would unfold. The plot is twisted and exquisite. Although I put some of the pieces together beforehand, I was still pleasantly surprised and thrown for a loop. I highly recommend this book. So good!

Utterly superb. I forgot to write a review. Read it some time ago. It does mysteries proud. More when I’m more awake.

I’m awake now.

Utterly superb, twisty, seamless, incredibly written five star mystery, which really should land on the list of to be Reads, of any domestic thriller fan.

This a take no prisoners novel that doesn’t have time for bullshit. I predict that you will be addicted by page one or the end of it.

A woman makes a confession to the police. This confession is about a murder, which she claims to have done.

But who is the victim? And why did she murder them?

What is going on?

Why would this woman , an expert in criminal justice herself, kill someone?

It just doesn’t make any sense. It’s mind boggling .

I mean she’s a happy woman with a wonderful husband, who loves her….

Or does he?

I mean, she’s just a kind hearted and gentle lady, not capable of hurting a fly.

Or is she?

I mean it can’t be true it just can’t. Somethings Gotta give.

Or does it?

I can’t say too much my friends without giving everything away.

It’s been eons since I enjoyed a psychological thriller as much as I enjoyed this one .

Put it on your list! I was not paid to write a review, I don’t know the author, and I regularly review novels as my thousands of reviews of work will show you.

I just loved this book. It’s really captivating and it’s not filled with the stupid clichés I can’t stop finding in modern mysteries that infuriate me.

This is definitely a book that you’ll go to town on trying to figure out.

Five stars . Five Stars for this book, from this book-loving, childless, cat lady!

Wow talk about unexpected twists! Really enjoyed this book, but felt the ending was rushed. I had assumptions early on and the majority of them were correct, except I was off on who the mistress was.

This book grips you in and moves fast!
I finished this book in a day because I had to know everything.

I really liked the writing style and the multiple POVs.
There was mental illness, a serial killer, twist and turns and most importantly karma.

As someone with BPD I appreciate how it was correctly portrayed even if it was in a negative light haha

How far would you go for those you love ?

My husband is lying. The minute he came home with alcohol on his breath and unable to look me in the eyes I knew it.

We used to be in love – the intense ‘I can’t be without you for a second’ kind. Where it hurts deep to be apart.

But now, we’re the couple that keep secrets from each other.

We hide the truth.

He thought I wouldn’t find out. I’m a detective – it’s literally my job to uncover clues and solve mysteries.

I know what he did.

And now I’m sitting here, in a police interview, being asked the question ‘did you kill her?’ to which I utter one life-shattering word: ‘yes.’

This was a really fun story that immediately grabbed my attention. The main character, Rowan, proclaims guilt in a local murder case, but did she do it? I wasn’t sure who to trust or believe as the story went on. We see a lot of different POVs and it all adds to the overall mystery. One twist I figured out early on, but a few others definitely shocked me at the end! This is a fun, fast paced detective mystery you won’t want to miss!
