Sleeping beauty but make it REGENCY and STEAMPUNK?!?!?

Melanie Karsak does it again. She creates a world of light and darkness swirling together in a dance beautifully choreographed. Breathing life into gas-lamp Victorian England where fairytales and legends are real. Be swept away in a realm of airships, automatrons, steam power, gas lamps, and things that go bump in the night.
I love the characters. I first encountered Aurora Rose in the Red Cape Society Series. I loved seeing her beginning unfold. I loved seeing her relationships with her brother, aunts, Albert and Constantine.
The plot was so good. It beautifully takes the classic fairytale and creates something new. No true love kisses to save the day. A twin brother also cursed with her. Will they survive? Is the curse truly broken? How will they break they break it if not?
I love this world so much. The Red Cape Society and Steampunk Fairytales series all happen in this same world weaving and flowing into each other beautifully. I cannot get enough and can’t wait to read more! I’ve yet to read another series that gives the same perfect level of steampunk Victorian vibes. I still think about these series often and am excited to finally having some more to read after bingeing through all of them after reading the first book.
These series are ones I can’t recommend enough! So give it a read today!

Wow...I did not expect to be completely absorbed by the retelling of a well-known fairy tale. This remaking is fresh, quirky, and better than the original. I loved this steampunk/Celtic magic/historical tale the author created with airships in the Victorian London skies and clockwork contraptions all around. I much prefer this "Beauty" aka Aurora Rose, with her acerbic wit and unquenchable intellect, who refuses to submit to the curse. This is my first book by Melanie Karsak and I am excited to read many more. This one was such fun!

Well, I've learned to expect this: after I have several glowing 4+ star reviews I usually get a 1-2star rating for a different book shortly afterwards. This proves that yet again.
I'll be honest "Sleeping Beauty" is my least favorite fairytale, so I guess it's not surprising that I didn't enjoy this one. The story was predictable, the characters were one dimensional and the ending was stupid. I could literally see it coming from a mile away. I hated all of the characters and desperately wanted the story to end. The only reason this gets two stars instead of one is because of the literary references sprinkled throughout the book. Pass!

I flew through this in a matter of hours and absolutely loved it! I loved the spin on sleeping beauty and honestly forgot about there being vampires until the very end. This was so well-written and captivating. I loved Aurora and Aubrey’s twin sibling relationship. I also adored the interactions between Prince Albert and Aurora. The ending has me on the edge of my seat and I am dying to know what happens next!

Spindles and Thorns was a wonderful Sleeping Beauty retelling. I enjoyed the atmosphere Melanie created. The sweet romance and the questions. The whole book I was excited to find out what happens next.
I can’t wait for the next one to find out what’s going to happen with the characters I enjoyed.
I also loved the mix of history with the fantasy retelling. Melanie did a great job intertwining the two.
I would recommend this book.

From the first moment I read the opening quote featuring several lines of my favorite poem by Lord Byron, I knew that this story would be a delectable and delicious treat!
Aurora and her twin brother Aubrey were cursed by an evil mage to fall into a deathly sleep before their faerie powers emerge on their eighteenth birthday. Their parents successfully killed the mage set out to curse them, but lost their lives in the battle that ensued. Aurora and Aubrey believe that they are free from the dreaded curse, that is until Aubrey sets sail for a European adventure and Aurora is left feeling that danger is lurking around every corner. In the deep recesses of her heart, Aurora longs for the life her heart dreams of, but the dooming fate of a deathly curse has other plans.
I don’t know why I have not read any of Melanie Karsak’s books before! The setting of the Victorian era, the vibrancy in inventions, steampunk, and the magical elements in this story made for a perfect gas lamp fantasy! I also love the real life characters, such as Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, being portrayed in such a new and interesting light. There is so much to love in this fantasy story and I will admit that I devoured this book in literal hours. I could not put it down! I also need more of Constantine, the vampire, in my life.
I highly recommend this lovely gas lamp, faerie, vampire, and Victorian era fantasy! I absolutely cannot wait to read book 2.

I just loved this unique sleeping beauty retelling! The writing style, wonderful characters and amazing world that was created had me so enthralled! There were twists and turns that kept me on my toes and I definitely was not expecting that ending! I can't wait to read what happens next and look forward to reading other books by this author.

Riveting and heartwarming and heartbreaking! Just all the emotions bundled into one little story. This was an absolutely incredible read, and I cannot wait for the next book already! So many twists and turns that I didn't see coming.

It has been awhile since I have read a steampunk book and I forgot how much I liked that genre! This was a steampunk/gas lamp Sleeping Beauty retelling. Aurora and Aubrey Rose are twins who are cursed when they were young to fall into an eternal sleep on their 18th birthday. After chasing and killing the mage who cast the spell, both of their parents are killed. It is believed that with the mage dead, the curse is gone.
As their 18th birthday grows closer, Aubrey decides to go on an adventure searching for rare plants while his sister Aurora will host and attend parties as her aunts hope for her to find a husband. Thinking she won't find anyone to suit her standards, Aurora meets Prince Albert and falls for him. But all the while, she is plagued with worry for her brother as strange things begin happening. A stranger named Constantine keeps appearing when there is trouble, but no one else can remember him. Is he there to help or is he the cause of the problems?
This is such a great twist on the sleeping beauty story. The curse has targeted twins of a royal Fae bloodline protected by a secret organization made up of Fae ancestors in a world that has all but forgotten the Fae. And it is a wonderful combination of historical and the fantastical with airships and steam powered vehicles.
Aurora is such a relatable character. She is a society woman bored with the pretenses who wishes she could go on grand adventures. And with Prince Albert she can finally see that dream become a reality if the curse is broken. And I adored the aunts who dote on the twins as well. Especially after the curse reveals itself and you get to see their true nature!
I cant wait for the next book in this series and when I get the chance I am going to start the Red Cape Society series as well!

Sleeping Beauty is one of my favorite fairy tales, and to be honest, one of my favorite Disney movies. Maleficent is such a great villain, and Philip is a swoon-worthy hero. However, we don’t see much of Aurora and know little of her character. Not so in Melanie Karsak’s dark retelling. Aurora is smart and clever, interested in antiquities and research. She’s daring and a bit of a fashionista without even trying (perhaps it’s the fae blood). I loved her character! In fact, I loved everything about this book.
Don’t pick this up and expect Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, or even the Maleficent retelling. Parts of this book are light and humorous, while others are very dark, and others made me cry. This Sleeping Beauty takes place in Melanie Karsak’s steampunk London during the reign of Victoria. (Check out her Red Cape Society series—awesome!) There are airships and cool gizmos. The setting almost becomes a character.

🖤 I enjoyed being swept away int this Victorian fairytale world. The writing style and pace were enjoyable, but what truly drew me in was the story itself. It flowed seamlessly, and I found myself deeply connected to the characters, eagerly following their paths. As the book concludes, it leaves you yearning for more. The ending hints at so many exciting possibilities, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for these intriguing characters.
I heard that Aurora and Constantine appear in her Red Cape Society book series (sister series which focuses on the origin story of Agent Rose and Constantine) so I am going to have to add that series to my TBR so I can learn more about their relationship. 😊

Fae & vampires meet Downton Abbey in this sleeping beauty retelling.
Really loved the world this was set in!
Wished we had gotten way more of Aubrey. When I heard this was a sleeping beauty retelling but instead of just a cursed princess it was cursed TWINS, I naturally assumed that Aubrey would play a much bigger role in the story. But his character honestly felt a little unnecessary.
Also thought there should have been more Constantine. It seems clear that he will have a much bigger role in the next book. But I just felt like there should have been more substance to him in this book. He is not around enough in this book for me to develop an opinion of him. And yet at the end of the book I was very much left with the impression that I should have an opinion about him…
Even though I think the two above characters were woefully underwritten, I still gave this 4 stars because of how enchanting the world was and how much potential the story still has. It’s just the first in the series and I have to believe that the characters will be better developed as it goes on. Because the world building proves that the author can write. And other characters were written with such charm and like-ability. (I just think too much time was spent on others instead of Aubrey and Constantine)
So to wrap my thoughts up: I enjoyed reading this very much but then got to the end and thought- “wait, that’s it?”

This was the first time I read a Sleeping Beauty retelling. From witches to werewolves and vampires, this is perfect for romantasy readers.
Aurora, a 17-year-old antiquarian who lost her parents when she was very young and was left to be raised by her aunts. When her twin brother, Aubrey, a herbalist sets out on an adventure to travel the world, Aurora is left behind to look for a husband. Just when she finds herself falling for a Prince, strange things start happening around her.
The beginning was so relatable, I found myself frustrated on Aurora's behalf.

Aurora, a 17-year-old antiquarian who lost her parents when she was very young and was left to be raised by her aunts. When her twin brother, Aubrey, a herbalist sets out on an adventure to travel the world, Aurora is left behind to look for a husband. Just when she finds herself falling for a Prince, strange things start happening around her.
The beginning was so relatable, I found myself frustrated on Aurora's behalf.

“Spindle and Thorns” is the first book in Karsak’s new series, The Society of Roses, which is set in the same world as her The Red Cape Society series.
This book is told from the POV of Lady Aurora Rose, a beautiful and tenacious young woman with a quick wit and a sassy nature.
I actually really loved Aurora, she was extremely intelligent and such a fun character to read about. I was intrigued by the face that she kept turning away her suitors, and I totally respected the reasons why she did so.
I also loved the fact that this was a Gaslamp Fantasy book set in Victorian England. The fact that this is a fairytale retelling was what originally caught my attention, but I was especially intrigued by the fact that Aurora’s twin brother, Aubrey, shares her curse.
I also thought that Aurora’s aunts, Ladies Kitty, Sunny, and Posey, were such a great addition to the story. They all had their own unique personalities, and I enjoyed reading any scene they were in.
To sum this up, I thought that this book had a very intriguing premise, and I am so glad I gave it and Melanie Karsak’s writing a chance! I would highly recommend this book if you love a good fairytale retelling, and I will definitely be looking into Karsak’s other books!

Who knew lemon tarts could be so romantic?
There is so much about this book to love. A gothic, steampunk Sleeping Beauty, with vampires? Yes please!
+Karsak is a master at creating compelling, interesting, and unique characters. I loved Aurora, and each and every side character instantly.
“I like this version of you, Aunt.” “What version,
Dove?” “The murderous one.”
+The settings were beautifully established without the writing being overly descriptive.
+The pacing was great.
+The slow reveal of Constantine was perfection, not a surprise exactly, but beautifully done. (I haven't read her Red Cape series yet, but I certainly will now!)
“Sleep, Aurora. Sleep. I will watch over you.”
My only two minor critiques
-The relationship with Albert was a little insta-love, however, given the time-frame and Aurora's longing for someone who would let her be herself, their attachment does make sense. Some of the romantic dialogue between them felt forced/cheesy, but the rest? Swoon.
“My very own comet.”
-Some of the beginning exposition dragged a bit for me, as there was some telling rather than showing.

Calling all readers looking for a sleeping beauty retelling with fae societies set in a time with remnants and historical figures inspired by Victorian England. You can positively feel the grandeur of the locations that Melanie creates with everything so richly depicted.
I adored the family relationships especially the sibling relationship between Aubrey and Aurora, the loving relationship between them is so wonderful and being such a key theme in this book it’s important is not understated.
You get a great sense of the importance of society in this era, especially for Aurora and what starts as an uncomplicated journey to find a match becomes so much more.
Having the fantasy elements and the magical creatures was such a beautiful addition to elements from the era at the time with inventions and exploration being such a key part of the progress.
Oh, and how could I forget the curse and the mystery elements. Honestly, this book has it all and I cannot wait for book two.

What a wild ride. A quick short and action heavy story that is simultaneously heartbreaking and yet leaves you optimistic. Gothic and dark but sweet in all the right places. My only complaint really is that the book was so short I wanted more! However the short length is also great for the brain after some very long high fantasy reads lately.
Both a beautiful sweet romance (no "spice") and a heart breaking tragedy all wrapped up in a Victorian fantasy world. Not your traditional HEA ending for sure but given the heavy foreshadowing (without sharing spoilers) there is much more to come.
I hadn't read The Red Cape Society series prior to this, through I know this is a prequel series. I will definitely be adding RCS to my list, while I wait and look forward to the next book in the society of roses series.
I'll also add that I started it right after watching season 3 part 1 of Bridgerton and it brings many of those same vibes to the romance which was fun.

Still not convinced? "So much flash and show to convey what is more simply said..."
I could go on with the quotes I highlighted. I know it claims to be Sleeping Beauty retelling, meets Bridgerton...and it is, but I also get some Mr Darcy vibes from a certain someone. I love the world we're in, this steampunk, past world, mysterious place that gives so much more than a princess retelling. There is no spice, if that's what you're looking for, but the witty banter and things left unsaid are great. I definitely want to see more of where this goes! I've been working my way through Melanie Karsak's books and the range of worlds she creates is great. I need more!

I was so excited to hear about this Sleeping Beauty retelling and I was not disappointed. I loved how there's magic, Fae, steampunk, a dash of what the mid 1800s would be like if there were magical and mechanical concepts.
I really loved Aurora and her Aunts are the best! In this version, Aurora has a twin brother named Aubrey, is aware of her curse and also aware that she's a member of the peerage.
My heart ached for all that her and her brother has to go through towards the end of the book and that was quite the twist.
So looking forward to the next installment and what further adventures Aurora will find herself on as she navigates through grief (I won't spoil who dies).

Brilliantly breathtaking and absolutely captivating! This Sleeping Beauty retelling is twisted and a bit dark. With memorable characters and a world richly built, how could this be anything but unputdownable entertainment!?
I was on pins and needles waiting for catastrophe to happen because my heart was sad in any world where Albert and Victoria didn't end up with their happily-ever-after. But along the way, Constantine appeared all darkly mysterious and gave us clues and tidbits to guide our imagination. And Aurora fell in love, and it was such a tender and wholesome romance with beautiful dreams of a future. But... Constantine would save her and whisper, and my heart would sigh.
I have a feeling that Aurora will discover a love that transcends time while seeking answers and vengeance, and I am here for it.

Aubrey and Aurora are twins…..their parents died when they were young fighting a mage who cursed them. The curse……they would prick their finger and fall into a deep sleep and die before they turn 18 and come into their own Seelie powers.
Aubrey loves innovation and exploration and sets off on an adventure……leaving Aurora to attend balls and sort through Society and find a suitor……enter Prince Albert!
Oh Prince Albert how I love thee…….I was rooting for this man like no other………..then enter Constantine……hello Vampire sir!!!
The nods to sleeping beauty…..the funny antidotes about pricking her finger……..and the banter is world class!!!!

I always like a book that is not only well written and keeps you embedded in the world of the characters, but a book that takes you on a journey you are not sure completely sure of. Sure, we know there will be a romantic conclusion to this, but it is not immediately obvious which is nice. There are twists and turns, shout outs to other books by the author (always happy to hear Lily Stargazer's name come up) and characters I can really appreciate. It takes some real skill to write a character that is spirited without being a harpy, and who is able to show weakness without being insipid. I also think the historical references are fun. I love a good fairytale and this book gave me a nice escape from the real world for a few hours. Can't wait for the next book.

Once upon a dream... Sleeping Beauty is a timeless tale which happens to be one of my favorite original Disney movies. I was very excited to read Ms Karsak's interpretation and was not disappointed. The story starts as a veiled telling of the original story, with a slightly different twist. It is set in Victorian Engliand with characters you may have already seen in other of Ms. Karsak books (and had more questions and curiosities about). The book followed what I initially thought would be the typical storyline, until Constantine and shadows show up at which point it dives into a dark, twisted and thrilling plotline. I love the character shaping and their interactions in this book. I could not put this down and am impatiently waiting for the next book!

Very big twist on a Sleeping Beauty type tale
This is a retelling but nearly completely it’s own story. A curse was put on twins Aurora and Aubrey but they thought it had been vanquished. They live their lives freely yet, as their 18th birthday neared, Aurora became anxious of danger. There is mystery. She also meets a special man who was intended for the queen, and the sweet, chaste romance they share is a wonderful part of the story. I felt like I was inside the story, wrapped up in it, a part of the happenings. The character development of Aurora was good. There was only a basic introduction to Aubrey. The aunts were fun as intended. I liked/didn’t like the ending, always preferring an HEA but maybe Aurora will find it by the end of the series. I highly recommend it.

What a take on Sleeping Beauty—I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down! Set in a Victorian fairy tale world, you meet Aurora and her twin brother Aubrey just before Aubrey sets off on an adventure while Aurora is set to find a husband before their 18th birthday. In true Sleeping Beauty fashion, there’s a curse and fairies, but beyond that it’s a new adventure where Aurora gets to be a detective to find out more about who killed their parents and if the curse was actually broken. I can’t wait for the next book, but in the meantime this is a prequel to The Red Cape Society series, so I’ll be catching up with it!
