She’s Texas's toughest bull rider, and he’s determined to win her heart.

Dakota and Wyatt. Storm and sunshine. Growing up, they were as inseparable as a pair of cowboy boots. The best of friends—or so Dakota thought. Every summer, Wyatt would come home to his family’s flower farm in Granite Falls, Texas, and they’d stargaze in the fields, pinkies brushing, laughter rumbling with the cicadas, until one summer… he never came back.

Dakota Cutler hasn’t heard a peep from Wyatt Patterson in over three years, and a lot has changed. He’s the hockey world’s golden-boy, and she’s developed a reputation as “The Cowboy Killer” for riding bulls and leaving men with broken hearts. After a string of one-night stands, the last thing Dakota needs is a distraction, but when her oldest childhood friend waltzes back into town, begging to move into her barn with the most adorable baby girl on his hip, everything changes.

Wyatt Patterson’s back to get the girl he’s been obsessing over for years, and he’s doing everything to get her to see him as more than a friend—two-stepping at the Troubadour, jumping into Cibolo Creek, even rendezvousing in outdoor showers. All Dakota wants is to keep her distance from her ex-best friend, but when she learns the truth behind why Wyatt left, it turns out the scorching Texas sun might not be the only thing that burns them this summer.

call me selfish immature idc but besides the second hand jealousy of a mmc getting another woman pregnant ESPECIALLY after he’s known the fmc for ages (and the fmc just be okay/understanfing about that and just feel the exact opposite feelings you feel abt the whole situation) i also hate single dad romance because of this reason:

Then I thought of my little girl, my Vi, and my daughter always comes first now, so I stayed put in the stands because she needs me. Dakota can handle herself.

can i blame him for this ? no. not entirely. am i mad that he has kid and has to put someone else before the fmc. yes. i want the fmc to be first idcc

i also feel like the author only made the fmc not be interested in the mmc for so long just so she could justify him getting another woman pregnant if that makes sense

and she was doing wayyyyy too much with the fmc wanting to be a mom sm. it did not fit her character at all imo and felt so forced and manufactured just so she could push them all be one big happy family

and these other quotes speak for themselves:

Looking at her now, I realize those feelings have never gone away. I tried all kinds of vices to get her off my mind after I left. Whiskey. Weed. Women. They all got me in trouble, but that last one got me my daughter, so I’ll never regret that choice.

“Oh, come on now. I know your parents raised you to be a Southern gentleman, but you don’t have to look away. You must’ve seen a woman topless by now since you’ve got that precious little girl on your hip.”

The last time I was inside a woman was Vienna’s mom, and as grateful as I am to have my daughter, I try not to think about that night too often. Mostly because it makes me feel like a jackass since I was imagining it was Dakota the entire time.

ik there’s way more but i didn’t have the patience to keep reading
and with regards to her being experienced, i didn’t have high hopes bc it’s almost never done well and this was no exception. did i like that she was getting w other guys and the mmc was hurt by it? absolutely. what i didn’t like was how sex to her was just a “routine” idk it didn’t feel like her sex life was written all that positively

anyway i’m upset bc if it weren’t for the single dad part i think i could’ve enjoyed this maybe ? like it had potential for the guy falls first/pining trope but him being a single dad completely took away from that for me

- - - -
why does every single dad book gotta have the prettiest covers now i want a copy of this

im hella skeptical of the premise though cause wdym he’s supposedly “loved” and wanted her for that long but suddenly shows up with a kid. idk im hoping it ain’t his cause nothing says i love u like getting another girl pregnant…

or let me guess he wrapped it up but the condom broken or it’s that 1%…

I'm loving all these new romance Western books and LOOK AT THE COVER, IS IT NOT THE MOST GORGEOUS THING YOU HAVE EVER SEEN?!

Some tropes which are included in this book that has immediately grabbed my attention:

- Cowboy romance, naturally
- Single dad
- Lady bull rider
- Forced proximity
- Black cat x Golden retriever (one of my favorite tropes)
- CHILDHOOD FRIENDS TO STRANGERS TO LOVERS!!!!
- ''It's always been you''😫
- No third act breakup ❤️

brb, gonna make an entire playlist of songs about cowboys and associating them with this book.

Update2:
Some kind readers mentioned that the heroine was engaged to someone else and the hero was trying to move on, so that might work for some of you. Anyway it’s still not my cup of tea.

Update1:
(It’s confirmed) the child is his and it was from a ONS
________

Not for me

“It’s always been you” trope 🙄 and he has a child from OW.

Ahhhh will I ever get over a man obsessed romance!? I don't think so. The hero in this has been in love with the heroine since they were kids growing up and he'd visit every summer. One year, though, she gets engaged and he leaves and doesn't see her again for three years. And now he's a single dad to an adorable daughter. It's roommates and forced proximity because they have to share a house while he's visiting (he's a professional hockey player too). I loved how all-in the hero was and how he would call his friends to update them on his progress of finally getting the girl. The banter was everything and them working out together so he can help her training!? Looovedddd it. His flirting was everything and I also loved how the heroine really fell in love with his daughter! This was just so so good and I couldn't recommend it enough!!

Nothing like a man knowing he wants to get the girl and doing everything to get her. Seeing the slow burn burning was amazing

This book was super unexpected because, for me, the whole he came back just to get the girl vibe seemed far, BUT THE AUTHOR IMPRESSED ME SO MUCH!!! 😍

Dakota is a strong, independent, and stubborn woman with a scowl who calls everyone "sugar"—agh, I need her confidence. She is ready to take on anyone who gets in her way, but Dakota wasn't ready for a MAN to be in front of her, basically on his knees, giving everything he has. PERFECTION. 😍✨

The slow burn was indeed slow, but it was needed. Dakota and Wyatt have known each other since they were little, so I liked the realistic angle of Dakota's POV: "Why am I thinking of Wyatt without a shirt... that's illegal." 🤭 Five freaking stars! I loved the giddiness and the swoon of this amazing duo, AND WE CANNOT FORGET WYATT'S DAUGHTER—so squishy and the perfect character to unite them. 💖

Lastly... the outdoor shower scenes, they were chef's kiss. 🤌🔥

Fav Quotes
"I'm f-- peacocking."

"Wyatt Dale Patterson. Are you flirting with me?" "Yes ma'am. I have been for a while now. You gonna put me out of my misery and flirt back?"

“Take what you need from me,” I groan against her lips. “I’m yours, so take it all."

Tropes
✨cowboy romance
✨childhood friends to lovers
✨ single dad
✨ blackcat x golden retriever
✨ forced proximity
✨ no third act breakup

get you a man who'll keep betting on you even after you do nothing but fail 💋
“When you fall for your best friend, you’re falling for their secrets, their backstory, and every skeleton in their closet. It’s a heavier kind of love, but it’s the kind forevers are made of.”
↪ plot:

Wyatt's back in town for the summer and taking a break after the hockey season's over, but he's not only here to see his family and rest. He's back and ready to earn Dakota's heart once and for all and finally have her stop thinking of him as only "her summer boy".

↪ thoughts:

There were a bunch of corny lines, it was super slow during the first 40%, the FMC's feelings for the MMC felt very abrupt, every time they defended each other very much gave that one scene in Ginny and Georgia where Ginny gives the corniest comeback ever and turns around thinking that she ate that (you know which scene I'm talking about and I would put the gif of it if I knew how to insert one here)... but , 60% into it I got more invested, Dakota and Wyatt had their cute moments, and Vienna was the cutest baby girl ever so yeah. Idk, it wasn't terrible but it wasn't great either 😭

Though I want to point out that everyone's been so dramatic in the reviews of this book about him getting another woman pregnant while claiming he's been in love with the FMC his whole life. So here's what actually happened: He left town to forget about her because she got engaged, while trying to forget her he had a one-night stand and got a girl pregnant, she told him some months later, and he decided to stay with the baby. Mind you, he used a condom, and I only mention this because I also saw people saying that "how could he have sex with another woman without protection if he's in love with the FMC?" We know condoms exist and aren't 100% effective... right? I would like to pretend that we are all grown enough to know that.

(I sound kinda mad in that last part but stop writing reviews without knowing what actually happens in the book. Go and read it, read the author's review if they write one or read the reviews of people that have actually read the book before you say anything. You're pushing away people's curiosity over it with false information and your own assumptions)

i think i have finally decided to settle on this being a three star read for me, while i found it really cute the pacing was just so weird for me personally. i felt like the first half really dragged on and was a bit hard to get in to, i DID like the first half and again it was cute but the second half was just way better for me.

there was a lot of discussion prior to this book releasing where people just went off about “how has it always been her and how has he always loved her when he had a kid from a one night stand” and i want to be so clear and honest when i say this: dakota was the problem the entire time LMAO.

if you would like the reasoning pls refer to my blocked out part here -

now that thats out of the way, truthfully there were times where i wanted to just hit my head against the wall about dakota being so stubborn to let herself give into her feelings and attraction to wyatt and i really would have liked to see more of the actual falling process on her end, because when she FINALLY realized she liked him it was like this weird 180 that just felt off?

i also found myself confused in some areas where the bull riding was concerned, the synopsis of this book made it seem for me as though shes this world class champion in bull riding yet in the book you would think shes just picked this up and started her journey because why has she never stayed on longer than the required minimum of 8 seconds (before a few months ago when they changed it to 6)????? i guess i sort of felt that she was going to be this crazy highly decorated bull rider just going through a dry spell and ended the book feeling like she was a rookie rider chasing a crazy dream?????

those two things were my biggest issues on this book and why i decided on a three and high key they make it sound like i didnt like this book whatsoever but truly i did. wyatt was EVERYTHING, vienna was the most fucking precious thing in the world and i absolutely LOVEEDDDDD reading about dakota with vi. there were some parts that felt very cringey but if you dont really care about any of the things i mentioned not caring for then i think youre going to absolutely love this read!

Update 2: YUP it's his kid so i'm not reading this shit, there's nothing i dislike more than the whole it's always been you bullshit and i always loved you yet i had sex with other women and knocked one up here's my kid for you to play mommy with

Sex with other women = has not always been her, so plz cut the crap
Especially that from the blurb he was the one who left and disappeared on her
HARD PASS

Update1 : This is heavely advertised as he fall first and hard and is dedicated to the fmc and it has always been her, but then he shows up with a kid?
I'm going to give the author the benefit of the doubt and keep the book in my tbr because hopefully the child is not really his and he didnt knock up another woman while supposedly in love with his friend, but i will wait untill spoilers are out to read it because i will not piss myself off and read a book with another fake stupid it's always been you but i was also a manhoe

Hopefully it's safe because I'm super eager to read black cat x golden retriever this is one of my favorite tropes EVE

this book…

i’ve never read a cowboy romance where the girl was the bull rider so i was very intrigued when i read the synopsis for this book. sadly i did not love the writing style or the overall story. it was just very cheesy and repetitive and the characters were not all that likable. let’s hope and pray this isn’t gonna put me in a slump because i will cry…

The way I needed to see if this man could get himself out of the friend zone was a need that I couldn’t deny.

If you’re looking for a fun yet spicyyyy, lighthearted bull rider/single dad romance where the friends to lovers is giving LONG TIME friends to lovers then I definitely recommend this!!

Also I need what I’m assuming is going to be book 3 in this interconnected romance series?!?! Because her bestie tho 👀.

Thank you so much to Meredith Trapp and Love Notes PR for my ARC ☺️💜

I don’t have words to describe how much I enjoyed Wyatt and Dakota’s romance! These two were best friends growing up, but one summer he cuts off contact and they don’t speak again until now, three years later. Wyatt is now a popular NHL player and single dad to an adorable little girl, and Dakota is one of the best (if not only) woman bull riders on the circuit right now. Wyatt and his daughter are back for the summer, and he’s here to make amends to finally get the girl of his dreams!

I love when a guy pines after a woman who has no clue her bestie loves her. While Dakota might’ve once seen Wyatt as her summer boy, he is ALL man now. Despite Dakota’s grudge, it wasn’t hard for them to fall back into their routine because they knew each other so well. Wyatt came back into Dakota’s life at a time where she needed a safe place to be cared for and encouraged. Likewise, Dakota showed Wyatt that her love didn’t come with conditions because she quickly fell in love with his daughter, Vienna, knowing that they were a package deal.

There were so many little things that made my heart warm (Wyatt’s closeness with his moms, Dakota’s tough but cuddly dad), as well as made me blush (“keep those boots on”). Definitely pick this one up because it had all the things I love about a single dad/small town romance!

TROPES: single dad, small town, childhood best friends to lovers (with a little dislike from her in between), heavy pining/“it’s always been you, she’s a bull rider, she’s the grump, forced proximity/roommates, no 3rd act breakup

I love it couldn’t & wouldn’t wanna put it down 🖤‼️ I love my girl Dakota the way I relate w her made this book perfect & even tho I could never picture myself w a golden retriever irl I SO GET IT NOW 🥹 like this was the most accurate description of a woman will stay in her masculine energy until a man makes her feel safe to be comfortable in her feminine energy 💌🔐 wyatt was dreamy fr & a ZADDY 😮‍💨 the love he has for Dakota burned bright since childhood he knew she was made for him & his determination to get the girl has you in all your feelings, the infatuation was palpable he was obsessed but the good type of obsessed the one you want irl he got me giggling & swooning 😍my girl was strong & independent(but kodie go get you some glasses) she was blind of the depth of Wyatt’s feelings until he decides to let her known & from that point their chemistry was electric, she rose to the occasion & excel as a mama, Wyatt’s relationship w his kid 🥹😭 stoppp i do not like kids & this makes me wonder 👀 & the whole parenthood struggles on point the ups & lows 🤌🏼 overall it was a fast paced fluffy & entertaining book! IMO this book felt like healing & I rlly love it 🖤 we should all have a Wyatt in our lives also did a mention his a 🏒🥵 small town romance!
I SAY GO READ IT! First book I read of the author & not the last one for sure I NEED TO TRY A PRICKLY PEAR MARGARITA now 😎

"𝘏𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺, 𝘐'𝘮 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶."

Start to finish this book had my roped in and wouldn’t let me go. I’m seriously obsessed with Dakota and Wyatt’s story.

Dakota was raised to be Texas Tough and she lets that show everytime she competes as the only female bull rider in Texas. It’s a man’s sport so she’s locked down her emotions and only shows her hard as steal exterior. Three years ago she got engaged to a fellow bull rider, but the relationship failed and left her filled with self doubt. She wants to be able to stay on bulls for the full 8 seconds but she can’t manage to stay on at all now. When her childhood friend shows up at her barn looking for a place to stay for the summer with his 1 year old daughter, she has to face the man who left her behind.

Wyatt has only ever loved one girl. He met the love of his life when he was 8 years old and just never found a way to tell her. He left when she got engaged to another man and became a skilled NHL right winger. Now he’s back and he will do whatever it takes to get out of the friend zone.

This book was filled with the most DELICIOUS tension! Wyatt finally gets out of his own way and shows Dakota the man he’s always been. I loved how HARD he worked to win her over. This is definitely a slow burn with the first kiss not hitting until after the 50% mark, but it was so worth the wait! When the spice hit it sizzled like a hot summer Texas day!

"𝘛𝘶𝘳𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘺 🍑 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦. 𝘐 𝘣𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘸𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥."

I adored all the moments between Dakota, Wyatt and his daughter Vienna. Those moments seriously melted my heart. Especially when you find out where Vienna’s name came from! Wyatt was able to help Dakota understand that the right person, will love every single part of her.

Y’all……
I absolutely devoured this beautiful book!!
Meredith Trapp just knows how to write a good romance book.
I was absolutely cackling throughout this whole book and kicking my dang feet in the air. It was definitely a grumpy sunshine but she was the grump and so spicy! The one liners were perfect.

We first meet Wyatt Patterson in icebound and now here he is in all his glory. He’s such a golden retriever, single dad, but also has no problem sticking up for his girls! Wyatt really was the perfect “it’s always been you” trope. Wyatt was absolutely obsessed with Dakota. I really liked that he never gave up on her and supported her through everything she set her mind to. Also he is such a great dad to Vi, made my heart melt seeing their interactions. I really liked the amount of importance this book put on parenting and what it’s like.

Dakota is a sassy takes no B.S. type of woman. I loved her character so much and could definitely relate to her and her struggles. I loved reading how her walls she’s built up so high started to fall and she started to trust so much more. Dakota has a hard and tough exterior but on the inside she is incredibly kind and selfless when it comes to people she loves. The determination on that girl is crazy high. Seeing the progress of Wyatt and Dakota mending their relationship and seeing Dakota soften towards Wyatt’s baby girl was so heartwarming and sweet!

And let me just say the side characters were absolutely hilarious. Cruz had me laughing so much with his conversations. Also I’m really hoping we get a Barbie/Sasquatch book 🫣

Dakotas father and her relationship genuinely made me so happy. I loved how much they pushed each other and supported each other during her rides. I hope my future kids have a relationship like that with their dad.
Genuinely I loved everything about this book and probably more!

I didn’t think this book could be WORSE than the first in the series but wowee did this author prove me wrong.

I had such faith that she couldn’t possibly ruin a cowboy but she did. Truly she did.
I LOVED Patty Daddy in book 1 but in this story? Yawn. He was literally so fucking boring and honestly? So desperate. This man pined over his best friend for literal decades and she just thought of him as her “summer boy” be so fucking for real.

And I’m sorry but Patty had a whole life in another state and we just never saw any of it?????

And you know what? Dakota is a PICK ME girl. And so was Nina. This author can only right pick me girls and it’s infuriating. GOD.

What about all the plot holes? All the unnecessary tropes? And all the internal monologue. So much internal monologue. 😴😴😴😴😴😴

There was truly no fucking need for Boone to keep showing up after the first time. There was no need for Nash to be literally mentioned for 2.5 seconds and cause that much headache. In this whole book, we saw Dakota hook up (or attempt to) with 4 different guys. And Patty just sat there watching it?????? Talk about a fucking push over. Patty and Dakota were genuinely dating for 1 minute when his daughter called her Mama and everyone just went “oh yep that’s normal love that”.
And then Patty moved back to Texas but we get no closure on the rest of his life? Like did he move teams? Did Micah come with? How long was the long distance? What’s their plan while Dakota is in the PBR? Did he buy her an actual engagement ring or is she just gonna wear a dumb mood ring that doesn’t fit her ring finger bc it’s from when she was 8 years old?

This book needed more Micha Cruz and a whole let less of everything else. If y’all see me even hint at wanting to read the third book in this series when it’s released (idk if it’s Michas or not) please cut my hands off because we already know that it’ll just be disappointing again.

•mini synopsis•
Wyatt Patterson has been trying to capture Dakota Cutlers heart since the days when they were spending every summer together as kids. She never saw him as anything more than her “summer boy”. One summer Wyatt never came back & it’s been over 3 years since Dakota has seen/heard from her ex best friend & so much has changed, but now he’s back with the sweetest baby girl on his hip & is determined to get the only girl he’s ever been obsessed with.

read if you like:
🤠badass female bull rider/cowgirl romance
hot as sin hockey player/single dad
🧡childhood friends to lovers
🤠spicy outdoor shower scenes
🏒swoony golden retriever mmc
🧡cutest dog & even cuter baby girl

quotes
✨”you’re too good for me.” “No. I’m just good for you.”
✨”you have no reason to feel jealous. I can’t stop staring at you in that pretty little dress. You’re beautiful, honey.”
✨”us nice guys might always finish last, but that’s only ‘cause we know our ladies get to finish first.”

My Thoughts 💭
Meredith does it again! This cowgirl romance was absolutely perfect. I ate it up! I was kicking my feet & blushing at this one!!! Even as a slow burn, when the spice hits—IT HITS.

I love that we get a strong/confident/spicy/tough as nails FMC. Dakota is a force & I loved the huge character development we see her go through. She fights against all her insecurities to capture her dreams & is the absolute best role model for sweet Vienna.

Wyatt…omg. Wyatt is the SWEETEST single dad with all the swoon. I mean, perfection doesn’t even come close to a good enough word to describe him. He’s so patient with Dakota & is tired of being the guy that she continues to see as just a “friend”. He pursues her in all the right ways wanting her to see what is standing right in front of her. Also—wow, best/sweetest daddy/daughter duo!

The relationship dynamic between Dakota, Wyatt, & Vienna you can’t help but melt. Every little thing about this book was so good. Every detail perfectly curated to this story!

The first half of this book reminded me of why I hate friends to lovers so much and the other half wasn't good enough to make me forget how disappointing the beginning was

Here are some words that will give me nightmares after reading this book:

1. ma’am
2. sir
3. (southern) gentleman
4. summer boy
5. baby girl
6. eight seconds
7. cowboy killer

A slow-burn Cowgirl romance with just enough 2 stepping to satisfy the void that's been there since the Hannah Montana Movie.

This was a cute, easy read (if the cover doesn't convince you to read this book then hopefully this review will).

Dakota Cutler is a fearsome Bullrider with one goal, make it to the Rodeo and get scouted for a team. She's doing what she loves, she's a badass with no responsibilities - preferring to keep things casual and breezing through life.
Wyatt Patterson ('Patty Daddy') is the NHL's goalkeeper sweetheart, a single dad to a 1 year old - Wyatt's priorities remain on his girls. Hearing Dakota is freshly single, having split from the fiancé who warned him away from his summer girl a couple years ago, Wyatt jumps on the first change he can to make amends.

When Wyatt first breezes back into Dakota's life - she's having none of it. Having cut all contact with her for no apparent reason and then bombarding back into her life like no time has past, Dakota is furious.
As truths are revealed and Dakota starts seeing Wyatt in a new light, emotions she's previously pushed down threaten to rise as Dakota realises she might have other needs outside the rodeo. And falling in love with her best friend and his daughter certainly wasn't on her bingo card.

I promised Meredith I would find more tropes/micro-tropes than 'Outdoor Shower' so please enjoy this list of things I am making tropes.
-Slow Burn
-Single Dad
-Hockey Hotshot/Bull Rider
-Badass 'take no shit' but will melt for those she loves FMC
-Friends to Lovers
-Summer Girl/Summer Boy
-Mild, Healthly Jealousy & Pining
-Determined to win her over MMC
-It's always been you
-Outdoor Showers
-He falls first
-Protective MMC (but knows she can look after herself)
-She's ready for a family
-LESBIAN MAMAS!!
-Two-Step Dancing
-Personal Trainer Wyatt
-Top tier dad of the FMC.
-Everything is bigger in texas

To address some complaints I've seen: yes this is an 'it's always been you' book, yes he has a child with someone else. They weren't together, they have never been together before, he was letting his friend live her life and respecting her boundaries sorry the guy didn't stay celibate his whole life.

holy shit how i loved this! this was the perfect friends to lovers slow burn. 🧡

i love a grumpy girl and a golden boy and this satisfied my hunger for that. she was also the bull rider and he's a single dad. do i need to say more?

the way dakota went from seeing wyatt as her friend to the love interest developed gradually and perfectly. usually they're thinking about how attractive they are from the start but she really wasn't!!!! and she was a little mean to him but it was fine, i enjoy a gal with some spice 🔥🔥

wyatt, oh the golden retriever wyatt. what a doll. i love a cinnamon roll blondie boy. he was so sweet and so devastatingly in love with dakota. what a gem 😭 where can i order my own

their romance was a slower burn than id anticipated, but it worked wonderfully for the story. and once it burned, it went up in flames!!! goddamn the mouth on that wyatt had me giggling and blushing like a fangirl🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

of course we've got a healthy dose of a small town romance, wyatt's amazing mothers, dakota's loving father (daddy issues are screaming rn), and some ex conflict. but it cleaned up so nicely. also the way dakota fell soooo hard for wyatt's daughter is sooo sweet.

the only reason(s) this isn't a 5 star read is because around the 50-60% mark, it got a litttle repetitive, and while i understand the effect of the slow burn, i don't like when books tend to go in circles, with wyatt trying to get her to see him as more than a friend, etc. there were also some sentences that needed shaping up in terms of structure, but hopefully the finished product will have touched on that. there was this part where dakota wasn't even present or mentioned in the conversation and wyatt's train of thought went right to her, but it just didn't even fit. it seemed like a paragraph that should've just been deleted. their internal monologue is also only about each other after a while and i hate when a book deviates like that, hence the rating and the repetitiveness.

furthermore, wyatt's daughters name wasn't vienna in the previous book (haven't read it) and they switched it because of the song? i guess im just tired of seeing that song everywhere.... it felt like it was added for brownie points and not for authenticity. not to mention the 1 tiktok song that was mentioned in this book like please stop

i wish that their past had been expanded on more thoroughly. apparently she saved his life by pulling him out of a creek? and they spent summers together but other years apart? i have a bad memory but i don't remember why they were always apart, and wish we'd gotten some more backstory. again, their inner monologue mostly focused on thinking about each other, so we don't get a whole lot of actual plot once the ball gets rollin. i also thought it was his mom's flower farm in texas and then by the end of the book im learning the moms don't even live in texas??? so where the hell are they???

those are small gripes i had and were easy to look past, so that's why i still rated this so highly. thank you so much to the author and lovenotes for the arc!!💘

tropes:
- single daddy
- bullrider girl
- reverse grumpy x sunshine
- (slow dancing in the kitchen)
- small town
- obsessed mmc
- he's younger by 2 years
- friends to lovers

This book was so heartwarming!

The chemistry between the lead characters feels authentic, with the slow burn of their relationship adding depth to the plot.

The single dad trope adds a cute touch, making the story even more adorable. While predictable at times, the vivid descriptions of ranch life and the emotional moments between the couple make this book an enjoyable and feel-good read! Would def recommend! <3

This slow burn cowboy romance?! 🔥🔥 I’m obsessed with Dakota, she’s the coolest main character who doesn’t back down or shy away. I love her tenacity and her heart! And of course Wyatt… there are no words. If “it was always you” was a book, this would be it! Thank you, Meredith for trusting me with your ARC! You guys are going to love it!

My Spice Rating: 🌶🌶🌶.5/🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶

FINALLY, my first *real* cowboy romance! Homebound by Meredith Trapp is sugar-sweet with plenty of spice - in more ways than one! I was actually thinking the spice would be spicer, but it was on the tamer side of what I've been reading lately. However, there is definitely still spice and I hope you like open door! Dakota and Wyatt are now two of my favorite characters and their story is completely swoon-worthy. The sexual tension was off the charts, and I was so proud once Wyatt stopped being timid and showed Dakota exactly how he felt about her.

The balance between the romance, bull riding, and seeing Wyatt being a daddy was absolute perfection, and there were moments I even had tears in my eyes. Homebound is book 2 of a series which I didn't realize going in, but it is one of those interconnected series only by secondary characters, so it is just fine as a standalone. There is quite a bit of repetition and some continuity issues, but nothing was going to take away from the story for me and I loved it despite these things. Trapp made the setting come alive so much that I felt like I was right there in Texas with our MCs. Read this if you enjoy sports/cowboy romance, he falls first, and excellent banter!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Bull riding romances are becoming a guilty pleasure for me. 🤭 Do I know anything about bull riding? Absolutely not, but it adds a lot of tension with the high risk aspect of it.

I wish I could give this a higher rating. I didn’t hate it. I enjoyed a decent chunk of it even. There were too many inconsistencies though, and even more redundancies.

Example: MMC is sitting with FMC’s dad, and her dad asks him if he’s gonna be the one for her more or less and if he’s gonna stick with her(not a direct quote). MMC says yep. Then a little bit later, FMC’s dad catches them kissing in another scene and he does the threatening dad thing while asking what his intentions are. Like wasn’t this already established!? This is not a unique thing in this book, there are repetitive moments all over the place.

It was cute, but it read like an early draft and needed more time in the oven. As it is, it’s too clunky to recommend or give a higher rating to. I have hope that the author’s writing will improve, and this was entertaining, so I’m looking forward to reading more of her stuff in the future as she gets more experience.

4.5 ⭐️ This was my first book by Meredith and it was such a wild ride. Pun intended!! I’ve read a couple books where the MMC was a bull rider, but this was another first with the FMC being the one to grab life by the horns (too many puns?) by being the bull rider.

Dakota was a strong, fierce, and independent FMC who seemed to be the only one with blinders on when it came to her best friend’s feelings for her. Wyatt was the quintessential cinnamon roll MMC, who needed to do some making up for leaving a few years ago without another word. In his defense he was trying to do what was best for Dakota, while also protecting his heart. But things have changed and now he’s back to get his girl, with his baby girl, Vienna in tow.

I loved watching him ease/tease Dakota into thinking of them as more than friends. As she fell in love with him, she also fell head over heels for Vi. It really warmed my heart to see how much she loved, cared, and protected their little girl. Parenthood is tough, y’all and having someone to support you in the good and the bad times makes all the difference.
