Heartstrings #1

First-Time Caller

Rate this book
A hopeless romantic meets a demoralized radio host in this cozy, Sleepless in Seattle-inspired love story from beloved author B.K. Borison.

Aiden Valentine has a secret: he's fallen out of love with love. And as the host of Baltimore's romance hotline, that's a bit of a problem. But when a young girl calls in to the station asking for dating advice for her mom, the interview goes viral, thrusting Aiden and Heartstrings into the limelight.

Lucie Stone thought she was doing just fine. She has a good job; an incredible family; and a smart, slightly devious kid. But when all of Baltimore is suddenly scrutinizing her love life-or lack thereof—she begins to question if she's as happy as she thought. Maybe a little more romance wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Everyone wants Lucie to find her happy ending... even the handsome, temperamental man calling the shots. But when sparks start to fly behind the scenes, Lucie must make the final call between the radio-sponsored happily ever after or the man in the headphones next to her.

I fell in love with this book! I cursed myself for reading it so quickly! Several things made me swoon and sigh, starting with the delightful banter between Aiden and Lucie during their radio show, where they shared a tiny booth without a single complaint. I absolutely adored the moment when Lucie found the list of her favorite things in Aiden’s car glove compartment, and her being stood up by her date turns into the most entertaining and memorable night—reminiscent of a scene from New Girl's pilot episode. (I’m trying not to give too many spoilers, but I can’t help sharing some moments that made me truly adore this book!)

I have a confession to make, and I hope Nora Ephron fans won’t boo me for it, but this book’s plot is even better than Sleepless in Seattle! The similarities begin with 12-year-old Maya’s call to Heartstrings, Aiden Valentine’s Baltimore romance hotline (which unfortunately only a dozen people listen to), asking for dating advice for her 29-year-old single mom, Lucie Stone. But that’s where the similarities end. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait until the end for the characters to meet at the Empire State Building (because, let’s face it, I’m not that patient).

When their conversations go viral, bringing back ratings and sponsors to the struggling station (thanks to Aiden’s brooding tone and existential crisis), the intimidating station manager Maggie Lin decides on a solution: to include Lucie in the show. So many lonely listeners connect with her and her journey to finding the real love she deserves.

Aiden agrees to help Lucie in her quest for love, sending her on dates connected through a separate phone line provided by the station. But there’s one big problem: if there were a Grinch who stole Valentine’s Day, it would be Aiden. He fell out of love with love a long time ago due to family tragedies, keeping people at arm’s length and avoiding any intimacy in his life.

How can Aiden, who doesn’t believe in love, help Lucie find her perfect match when he’s starting to develop feelings for her himself? He tries to restrain himself, believing he can’t offer her the magic she deserves. But the sparks between them are undeniable, and Lucie has feelings for him too. Can he do the honorable thing and send her to a man who can give her what she wants, or will he tear down the walls he’s built around his heart and take a chance on becoming a better man?

I loved Aiden and Lucie’s story. Their attraction and sizzling chemistry are off the charts. Lucie is brave, kind-hearted, and tough, always putting her loved ones first—and she’s also a kickass mechanic. Aiden, on the other hand, is incredibly sweet, a true romantic hiding behind his cold, sarcastic, and depressed exterior.

Grayson, the gay dad next door who’s fiercely protective of Lucie, and his husband form a big, eccentric family that had me laughing so much. And Maya is smart, sweet, and absolutely adorable.

If I had the talent to write and compose a love song for this book, I would do it in a heartbeat!

I have a feeling we’re going to read Jackson Clark (Aiden’s best friend with a cruffin addiction I can’t blame him for—those things are amazing!) and Delilah Stewart’s enemies-to-lovers story in the second book of the series. (At least, that’s what I’m guessing based on the hints the author dropped!) I can’t wait to read more of this series. It’s off to an even better start than the Lovelight Farms series (which I also adore). Aiden and Lucie’s story will tug on your heartstrings, bringing you joy, entertainment, and hope—the perfect recipe for a great romance!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for sharing this perfect romance’s digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts.

final verdict: i still feel very conflicted

the things that stand out to me are less positive than i would hope. the thing that immediately comes to mind is the fact that he never *actually* meets her kid. the ENTIRE book. it was said this was single parent, but she’s always off and away for her to hook up/hang out with aiden…brother WHAT. like, there comes a time where, when two people fall in love, they eventually meet their significant other’s child i’m so 😭

other than that, the setting really never changed. that’s not something inherently bad about the book because the whole point of this book is the radio show, but it’s a personal issue. that was kinda boring, i wanted more from them out of the booth.

what upsets me the most is how fucking long they took to get together in ANY respect. this was so slow burn the candle idk dissipated???? we had emotional hang up’s galore and sometimes aiden was really not swoon worthy and i thought lucie deserved better high key

okay okay hater time over, the three stars are for 1) enjoyable writing. this single book is better than the lovelight farms series 2) RIDICULOUS spicy scene. singular scene, which sucks, but boy was she hotter than the sahara! 3) lucie representing dating in this era and still finding love. miss girl it IS hopeless out there, that’s why i read!

guys guys guys i’m losing my mind this is was so good like i don’t know if you guys are big romcom people, but this is literally sleeping in seattle was a book but with a beautiful twist and i LOVED it!

like truly this book was soooo refreshing, lucid and aiden?? oh my otp. 100%. and i don’t usually like kids in books, but lucie’s daughter was everything to me. she was so real y’all, and the side characters added so much to the story like every moving part and chapter in this book was necessary. the pacing was perfect, i love how the plot progressed and how much background we got as well, i’m very very happy with this story and CANNOT wait for what’s in store with this series! this is also my non spoiler review so it’s a bit short than what i would love to write but it’ll do for now. definitely recommend this one!

4.5 stars :)

This is my first B.K. Borison novel and I had a good time! It won't be my last

What I loved…
- A++ banter
- THE TENSION!
- She’s a mechanic 💗
- Absolutely adorable Sleepless in Seattle inspired story
- 29+ FMC and MMC
- adorable family/found family dynamics
- swoony, hopeless romantic in denial MMC
- the COVER, are you kidding me? It’s perfection
- single mom

What I didn’t love…
- The first 25% is a little slow
- I wanted MORE banter and MORE tension, what we get is really good but there is not nearly enough of it!
- I did not connect with Aiden’s backstory - could be a me problem
- the conflict and reason for keeping them apart was weak

Thank you NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sending this book (eARC) for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

5✨ I loved every moment of this book.☎️💕— I became a fan of B.K. Borison’s writing after a search for a cozy Christmas read led me to the Lovelight Farms series. I was thrilled to received an ARC of this book through NetGalley and have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of this new series. — As a complete sucker for anything nostalgic, I loved the nod to Sleepless in Seattle, the radio station setting and our main characters Lucie and Aiden. Borison always writes great side characters and there were so many to love in this book. I can’t wait for the next books in the series, in the meantime, I’ll be reading this again when the audiobook comes out. 🥰

♾️⭐️!!!!!!

when i tell you this book altered my brain chemistry in a way that i will forever be comparing my feelings i had with this novel to others. this was a romance that felt so viscerally real, unique, and filled with beautifully messy characters that made it so hard to believe they were fictional.

i told myself i was gonna wait to read it closer to release date, but clearly i have no self-control when it comes to a b.k. borison novel because i read the first chapter and thought “ah shit here we go”. i couldn’t put my kindle down. i was completely immersed. i haven’t had those “i forgot i was reading” feelings while reading a romance in a very long time. i was hooked from the very start.

aiden and lucie’s romance is a romance that will stay with me for a long time. THE FLIRTING!!!! the flirting was top tier. had me squealing out loud and twirling my hair. “stop braiding your hair in the booth and i’ll stop flirting with you.” oh aiden the grumpy clueless man that you are 🫠🫠🫠🫠. you have my whole heart.

i found myself related so deeply with both aiden and lucie that i felt so seen and held. the interactions between lucie and aiden were so precious yet tender yet HOT (!!!!!!). a lot of my favourite moments were the moments that weren’t even said. the eye contact, the subtle touches, and the way they catalogued one another!!!!

i know i will be going back to reread this multiple times bc i already miss them so much. becs really outdid herself with this one. it completely blew me away and i know you all will be OBSESSED.

Ahhhh!!! Becca has done it again. This was beautiful, raw and SO ROMANTIC!!!!

I was hocked from page one and I had to put this down against my will 😭 It had a delicious slow burn and I was pleasantly satisfied with the final outcome 🥰

It felt completely different from "The Lovelight Farm Series", meaning that it felt more serious and mature?? Idk how to explain it but even the spice was different but not in a bad way. I am just trying to say that she did a great job at differentiating both series. Aiden and Lucy were to die for and now have become one of my favorite couples of all time!

For a second I thought that this will top "Bussines Casual" as my favorite book from her but even though it didn't, I did ended up loving this one so so much!! My only critique is that after the 50% mark the pacing was a little bit slow but it luckily picked up later on. I cannot wait to read the second book and have this one in my hands. 🤍🤍

i just read my favorite book of 2025 in august of 2024. b.k. borison has cemented herself as a must-read romance author with first-time caller!! when i tell you this book is a Romantic Comedy, i mean it so seriously. i was actually laughing out loud every few pages because the writing is sparkling and fresh and perfect. the characters feel very true and well-rounded - i loved aiden and lucie separately and together. borison writes their fears and passions and quirks in a way that makes everything feel so real as you're reading. the banter is fun, the conversations are meaningful, the physical scenes are hot and the connection is genuine. absolutely adored the radio show storyline and all of the radio transcripts in between chapters. each of the supporting characters are delightful (especially maya!!) and make the story extra vibrant. and yes i did tear up reading the acknowledgements! everyone who loves rom coms please read this (and then be my best friend) <3

thank you thank you thank you to berkley and netgalley for the eARC :*

I am BEGGING someone to make this into a movie - it's the kind of story that you can visualize in your head, making the characters come to life in the most visceral and smile-inducing way. It's absolutely a love letter to the rom com movies I grew up with, the ones that shaped my love of the genre. And it's also so fresh, fun, SEXY, and one-of-a-kind. There's chemistry between these characters from that first phone call, which grows and expands along the way. They're opposites in their views on love, but they fit together perfectly in all the ways that count. I loved watching our jaded hero fall head over heels for his girl before he even knew what was happening; he is swoony in his actions, even though he'd deny that with words. I also loved that our heroine was strong enough to know her worth and hold out for a love that felt right. Their love story comes together over a short period of time, but we spend so many extended moments with the characters that I felt like I was falling right alongside them. I binged this SO FAST, and loved it the whole way through. I think it might be my new favorite from the author, and the bar was already sky high.

The story follows Lucie, a single mom who is mortified to discover that her 12-year-old daughter called into the city's romance hotline on her behalf. Sure, Lucie rarely dates, but that's because she doesn't want dating to become just another chore - she's holding out for that magic kind of love, the one that happens without trying to force it. After arguing with the hotline's host, Aiden, for a while, Lucy thinks that's the end of it. Until their conversation goes viral, and suddenly the city is rooting for Lucie to find love. Somehow, she finds herself agreeing to co-host the radio show for a few weeks while looking for love amongst a mountain of potential suitors - all while sharing the airwaves with a man who openly admits that he's fallen out of love with love. As Lucie and Aiden search for her perfect match, they stumble onto something unexpected.

I devoured this in one sitting, because it felt like I was watching a movie play out before my eyes and I was wholeheartedly invested in seeing these two get together. It's a delicate balance to have Lucie actively seeking out other guys while slowly falling for our hero, but Borison handled the situation with ease. It was really refreshing to have a single mom heroine who has such a rock solid relationship with her co-parent. They're lifelong best friends who happened to have a baby together as teenagers, and he is her biggest cheerleader. The cast of characters adds plenty of comedic relief whenever the story starts to veer into emotional territory (strong "parent with cancer" energy with this one), deftly navigating between the heartfelt moments and the humorous ones. And the spice! It's the kind of slow burn that SIZZLES once it kicks into high gear, with spice that's intimate, revealing, and smokin' hot. The story made me smile and swoon in equal measure, stealing my full attention from start to finish. I definitely loved it!

Aiden is the cutest man ever. He has a way of speaking that is both serious and goofy, and I absolutely love it. Everything about him is lovable, from how he cared for her from the very beginning to his little acts of love. Even though he claims love doesn’t exist, he is incredibly romantic and considerate right from the start.

Lucie's transformation is also something I admire. She evolves into a person who knows what she wants, which, though it took time and the right influences, made me incredibly proud of her. Watching her come from her shell and bravely express her feelings was truly heartwarming. It inspired me to be more like her, particularly when it comes to understanding and voicing my own desires and emotions.

I loved how the story concluded, especially seeing Aiden come to terms with his feelings. Overall, I highly recommend this book!

okay first of all - he wears a thin gold chain 🫦 AND he keeps a list of her favorite things 🫠

I finished First-Time Caller a week ago and I'm still thinking about it. I loved everything about this book. Single parent romances can be hit and miss for me, but B.K. Obsessed. Not only is this a love story, it felt like a love letter to Baltimore which is where I’m from. From everything from Berger cookies to crab chips I just felt so at home with this book. The romance is a sleepless in Seattle retelling for the modern age and it just really worked for me. I loved this book and I’m so excited it’s a series!

This book was pure magic! ✨

I loved the Lovelight series by Becca and I was so excited to read new characters and a new world by her. She outdid herself with this book. It literally felt like a movie in my head -- the story was written and told so well.

The plot around the radio station was so unique and engaging. The banter was so funny and I loved all of the characters. I was smiling and laughing and did not want to put the book down! I fell asleep reading it and woke up and immediately continued reading. There is just something about Becca's writing that draws you in. The metaphors and the way she structures sentences I just can't get enough of.

Her characters are also so well fleshed out. I felt this especially in Business Casual and then again in this book. They feel like real people with real struggles that you can easily relate to. I loved Aiden and Lucie so much -- they were so good for each other. Aiden was grumpy but still was so kind and had a soft spot for Lucie which I couldn't get enough of. The way Aiden thought about Lucie made my heart squeeze in my chest 🥲 Lucie was so fun and I loved that she was a mechanic! what a queen! They are just perfect together and I cannot wait to see them in future books in this series.

I also can't wait to read the other characters' stories as we continue the series! This is definitely a new comfort read and one of my favorite romances of all time 🥹

I could not say thank you enough to the publisher for the early copy!!

I have read a few books by Borison now and I can honestly say I'm a big fan. I love her heartwarming stories, and this one was so good. Aiden was such a romantic. The things he did throughout the book are the sweetest. The cutest guy ever. Aiden and Lucie are great characters. I enjoyed them as a couple, I just wish it didn't take so long for them to get together. A definite slow burn. This book is compared to the movie “Sleepless in Seattle” and I can honestly agree. It was so good. I had a fun time reading this cozy, comforting and steamy book.

BK Borison always just gets it

This was so much fun! B.K. Borison has proven to be the master of the witty, banter filled romances we all devour.

Aiden is the romance radio host who has stopped believing in love. Lucie is a single mom who has never had time to find her own love story. When they come together in an unlikely way on air… they join together to set out to find Lucie love, and to help Aiden’s job.

This romcom was so cute and different with a modern take on sleepless in Seattle!! I enjoyed this story and the cast of characters that I hope we see in the future.

The banter between Aiden and Lucie was a highlight to the development of this book, and their relationship, as always Borison has written a book that will be so well loved.

Thank you Berkley for the eARC.

Thank you so much to Netgally for giving me an ARC of this book!

This book is absolutely amazing for fans of 90s and early 2000s romcoms! Borison based this book on Sleepless in Seattle and it definitely shows in the best way possible! I felt so much nostalgia for the classic movie while also enjoying the creative liberties Borison took with the book!

I was so incredibly engaged with this book that I finished it in less than 24 hours! Once I picked this book up I could not stop thinking about the characters and what was going to happen next in the story! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the romance genre!

SIX STARS⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I seriously don't know what to do with myself. This has to be the best romance book I have ever read. The way I fell head over heels for Aiden Valen... I was physically giggling and kicking my feet at this book. 💖 The CHEMISTRY between him and Lucie is unmatched. If you want a story with great vibes and banter/interactions that'll make you swoon, add First-Time Caller to your TBR right now!
This story also had so much DEPTH!
Omg, I cried the last 10% straight of this book.
The interaction with his dad... omg. SOBBING. IYKYK

I can not believe I was privileged to read this as an ARC. I will 10000000% be buying a physical copy as soon as this comes out! 👏🏼
Side note: I have never seen Sleepless in Seattle *I KNOW* and now plan on making it a top priority after reading this story which was a retelling.
I can not wait for the other books in this series.

This was my first ever read by B.K. Borison and I will add everything she has ever written to my tbr. OMG. I have never seen someone create a more magical connection.

Thank you so much, NetGalley for this advanced readers copy of First-Time Caller by B.K. Borison!
