Rate this book
1827, the Ottomans offer the Egyptians any part of Greece they can subdue, taking the people into slavery and replacing them with Muslims. The great powers are split, some like the Austrians support the Ottomans but three do not. Britain, Russia and, a reluctant, France sign the Treaty of London which stipulates that Greece should be self governing under the umbrella of the Ottoman Empire and that the Ottomans will cease all hostilities, Vice Admiral Martin Stockley is given his first fleet command, to take over the Mediterranean Fleet and to enforce the treaty on the belligerents. The result is the battle of Navarino.

The tragic death of James Turner from Cholera places Marty at the head of the Foreign and Overseas Branch of British Intelligence. How will he cope with sailing a desk and what style of espionage will he bring to the service. Meanwhile his son James is carrying on the sailing part of the family tradition as part of the Ionian Patrol and develops a fascination for steam.
Intruige, war at sea and the entry of the marvellous new age of steam.

Biography
I am descendent of a long line of Dorset clay miners and have chased my family tree back to the 16th century in the Isle of Purbeck. I have been a public speaker at conferences for most of my career in the Aerospace and Automotive industries and was one of the founders of a successful games company back in the 1990’s.
Now in my sixties, and living in the Netherlands Antilles, I finally got to write the stories I had going around in my head for many years. Thanks to inspiration from the great sea authors like Alexander Kent, Dewey Lambdin, Patrick O’Brian and Dudley Pope I was finally able to put digit to keyboard and start writing the Dorset Boy series.
I make no apologies that I write for myself. The stories emerge as I write and I am often surprised by the twists and turns that they take.

I have read all 16 of these books - one after the other - in order to keep continuity in the development of the numerous characters that appear and disappear as the story of Martin's life progresses. Reading the books in order lets one embark on a literary journey. They are enjoyable, uncomplicated story plots in each book about the period in history late 1700's to mid 1800's. Historically they are factually correct and some of the main characters did exist. Martin does rub shoulders with many of the main players of the time and his involvement in their lives is clearly intertwined into history to make the plots quite believeable Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the series so far. I can only assume at this time that I have read the series faster than the author can write them, and future books will appear in due course.

This is a wonderful series with a great balance of action and character development over a span of many years. It weaves in actual historical events and Christopher Tubbs exhaustive knowledge of sailing into a compelling narrative. Unlike some series where the characters never seem to age or develop this series follows the lives of the principles characters as they age and grow. I look forward to reading the next book in the series and have never been disappointed.

Only one problem

Was hoping to finish this last night and write this but I fell asleep after 130 am...
It might be the best book yet, as it moves in and out of the family's lives, as well as the crew. Great yarn..

Only problem is that it ended to soon

Greek independence, Portuguese intrigue and the beginning of Princess Victoria

These books are a perfect summer read. More intrigue and a call for the Shockley family to promote British interests.

Marty, now an admiral, takes on the Turkish Fleet, with the assistance of the Russians and the French to support Greece's revolt against the Ottoman Empire. A different but necessary challenge for the spymaster.
