“Welcome to Purgatory, baby.”

I had so much fun with this crazy group of demonic misfits at the Passing Through Cafe ☕︎.
Each character was so unique, and I loved the concept of a Hell dimension connected to the human world.
This was hilarious, quirky and fun and I kinda fell in love with every single one of these wacky dudes. [especially RUSTY, he’s so precious. A super grumpy pink care bear raccoon demon?? I need an entire book just about him, please]

“Do you want a yummy orange thing? It’s hard and kind of shaped like a dick, which seeing as you have a baby, I bet you’re into.” When the cow huffed at him, he shook his head quickly. “Oh, no shade, sis. I am also super into dick. Love it. Dicks all day. This is a judgment-free zone, babes.”

Gem was also so fucking funny, he had me crying from laughter. I loved how the demons messed up human sayings, how they accepted Oliver in their group even if he was human. How they teased and fought with each other, but still protected and cared about each other like family.
This read was just full of fun scenarios, from a demon drag show to a crazy hangover, club dancing and horse riding. And let’s not forget the romance.

“I want you,” he whispered in Liel’s ear, fingers tightening on his hips as the demon rolled his ass. “I’m all yours,” Liel vowed, head falling back on Oliver’s shoulder.

Liel and Oliver were HOT together — the dirty talk, the tension, the spice. Being used to Lily Mayne’s monsters, I wasn’t surprised by Liel’s different anatomy. Plus, you know…tentacle dick… enough said.
What did surprise me was Oliver’s dirty talk, ‘cause I did not expect super awkward babbler to have such a dirty mouth. But I loved it.

Liel snarled, a vicious, chilling sound, and Oliver said, “Come on my fucking cock.”

Their relationship wasn’t just sparks in the bedroom, they were also very sweet and lovely.
I really loved everything about this world, and I hope we see more of it in the future.

I knew that loving you would be the easiest thing I’d ever do.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

CW and tropes (spoilers):
- Demon x human
- Found family
- Vers MCs
- Rimming
- Multiple orgasms
- Phone sex
- Non-human genitalia (tentacle dick)
- Snowballing

It was amusing as heck that’s for sure, but the constant crashing of the coworkers in Oliver’s life got kind of annoying, and I honestly just forgot who was who towards the end. I wish we'd focused more on the relationship between the two MC as we didn’t even meet the love interest until 30% which felt weird and way too drawn out. There was a few chapters dedicated to side characters which just frustrated me honestly as, again, I wanted to see the two MAIN characters interact. Blegh. I don’t mind when books have several side characters, but when they start taking over the book, I get annoyed.

A weird note though, is that there seems to be a LOT of things borrowed from Lily Mayne. I understand these two have written a series together and such but it felt REALLY weird to see them complaining about despair syrups, Sharon's from accounting, cheating ex-boyfriends and finding out they cheated while leaving, and such when Lily Mayne did the same thing earlier with Impromptu Match. It also felt super uncomfortable to read about Oliver and Liel talk about having sex and having sex as some of their lines seemed to be taken DIRECTLY from Moth and Seraph, written by Lily.

Now, idk. Could be coincidence. Could be heavily inspired. But the whole thing made me wildly uncomfortable as Lily isn’t mentioned at all in the thanks or acknowledgements.

Initially, I struggled to connect with this book. Everything sounded so alien, sometimes in what felt like an unnecessarily alien way as if to emphasise how different everything was, and I thought I wouldn’t get over that aspect of things. It didn’t help that we didn’t meet Liel until what felt like over a third of the way through the story.

However, once I began to distinguish between the different characters/demons Oliver was working with and Liel was introduced, I fell in love with this book. The banter from Gem – utterly deranged, completely inappropriate, but laugh your socks off funny; Rus with his description of something between a pink raccoon and a Care Bear; Willow with her empathy – each of them had their distinctive characteristics and role to play in this found family.

Oliver and Liel were so sexy together – both lacking confidence on occasion, yet open and honest with each other, and the lack of judging from both of them on their differences in physiology was lovely. The sex between them was hot, but ultimately it was all of them together on the trip back to Montana that brought a smile to my face that didn’t leave until I finished the book. I will definitely be looking out for more books about Purgatory and can heartily recommend this one. I received an ARC from GRR.

This book solidified the fact that I need to read paranormal books more often! I really enjoyed it. It was fun and funny and interesting.

We had a lot of world building at the beginning of the book which is to be expected when it's the first book in a new series. We also met a lot of side characters and I can't wait to read their stories!

Our main characters are Oliver who is a human and gets a job at the Passing Through café in Purgatory and Liel who is a demon(a Gymnot to be more exact) who is a lawyer. Oliver misses his train connection in Purgatory that would have taken him to a job interview as an accountant and ends up going into the café, where Gem hits on him and then offers to get him a job at the café. He has nothing to lose so he accepts, and quickly get hired by Glyma and Quin who are the 2 owners. There are a lot of hilarious scenes that happen with a lot of the side characters being present. After a couple of weeks Oliver goes out with his new colleagues to a show in Gluttony and drunkenly stumbles into Liel, whom he has already met once, but was drunk then too. A lot of hilarity ensues yet again and after a while Oliver and Liel start dating. There was no huge relationship drama and I really appreciated that. They were both honest and open to the relationship progressing. Sparks flew between Oliver and Liel figuratively and literally too! They were cute together and their relationship felt very natural. Oliver was never afraid of how different Liel was and I really enjoyed how much of a giver he really is.

The banter between everyone is really good, and I laughed so much while reading the book. It was really fun getting to immerse yourself in a new world. I felt like the story was well rounded. We got a pretty good picture of how the 2 worlds intertwine and how Hell works and we also got to know a lot of different demon species, which was very interesting to me. We got some examples of demon cuisine which was also very interesting. I loved how the employees of the cafe were such a tight knit group and they stood up for each other. Oliver took them to his parents dude ranch and it was really fun to see the demons so out of their elements, but finding things they enjoyed doing while they were there.

Definitely recommend this book to anyone that wants to read a fluffy paranormal novel with a lot of great chacaters, a lot of laughs and some great steam too! It's a slower burn, but definitely worth the wait.

4.25/5 stars! I really enjoyed this book. The cover, and recommendation from fellow monster author Lily Mayne, are what drew me to this book and I found it to be enjoyable and light-hearted. I understand where some readers may have felt there were a great deal of similarities between Lily's writing and Nik's in this case, but I found it to be more in styling, than content itself. Lily has been vocal about how her Monstrous series (based in a serious post-apocalyptic world) was heavy for her mental health and her new series Goliaths of Wrestling was intentionally low-angst and humorous. I felt that similarly, Nik made a distinct choice to create a world where instalove and acceptance is possible.

That said, I really enjoyed both. It made sense that in the first book in a series, setting the stage and really getting to know the full cast of characters, is important. I loved Oliver's realization that he'd already met "The hottest human he'd ever seen." Nik also wrote a world where sexuality and gender fluidity are normative and this was beautifully handled by them.

There were a few things that detracted from this being an exceptional read for me. Firstly, having grown up in a conservative area of the country (Wisconsin in my case), I don't buy that a Christian, conservative family, who historically struggled to accept Oliver as he is, would be ok with all of the cussing, vulgarity, sexuality, and other blatant comments the crew said when they visited his family. The author was choosing to focus on if they would accept Oliver and his boyfriend, but 0% chance a family like that would be ok with all the things Toni, Gem, etc had to say. I get it; it's fiction; but that was hard for me to wrap my head around. Secondly, there were a lot of 'pet names' outside of the relationship. I enjoy them in a romantic context but the sugar, honey, babes, sweetheart, etc was excessive and again kind of pushed me out of the story.

But I'm looking forward to what's next for Rusty & Sem and Jude and Toni. Great start to a new series.

I think this book had a lot of potential but there was just way too much going on constantly in the background and with so many other people that it was hard to really focus or care much about the story and characters. There were plenty of fun and enjoyable aspects but unfortunately it was too overshadowed by the overwhelming amount of things happening at once.

Oh my goodness, what a fun book!

Do you have any idea how much I laughed while reading this book? No, you don't, because you haven't read it yet. But I laughed so hard, out loud, like a lunatic, to the point where my family started giving me weird looks and asked me curiously about what I was reading.

I have to say that when I requested this ARC, I didn't notice the author's name, and I didn't realize it's Nik Knight, who apparently is the new name of Nikole Knight (I'm not sure if it's just for some books or if this is the name they will use from now on). The reason I requested it was because the cover promised a Monster Romance, and the synopsis seemed fun to me. And thank goodness for it because I LOVED THIS TO PIECES!

Interestingly, I would say that the romance is not the most important part of the book. It's a big part, don't get me wrong, but it's not one of those books that focuses solely on how the MCs meet and fall in love. Not at all. The book focuses on Oliver, our sole narrator, and how he ends up working in a small café in Purgatory. There, he meets a myriad of different demons, learns about the differences between them, and discovers the best and worst sides of Hell.

I couldn't tell you at what point in the book (in terms of percentage, I mean) Liel appears, but I can tell you it might easily be after the first 25%. Just so you get an idea.

Until then, we follow Oliver in his adventures through Purgatory and get to know his co-workers at the café: Gem, Rusty, Willow, Zef, Toni, and many more. Each of them is a unique character, and the amount of laughter their craziness brings is indescribable.

Without a doubt, Gem has been my favorite character. Every interaction with Gem is madness that makes you cry with laughter, and his outbursts, rants, and his unique way of thinking and being make him a gem that I could read about nonstop for hours and hours.

This is one of those books that I could write about endlessly and end up with such a long review that you'd be too lazy to read it. I would love to analyze all the characters for you to explain why it's so worth getting to know each one of them and what I expect from their future books (because I’m already longing for some of their stories, and the couples that are forming, and oh my God, I need them now!). But I don't want to spoil anything; I don’t want to reveal anything because I feel it would rob you of the pleasant surprise I had when I met them myself.

I'm sure this is a book I'll reread. In fact, as soon as it’s available (on September 13th), I’m going to buy a physical copy and read it again, and I’ll highlight and mark every hilarious moment, every funny, beautiful, romantic, and wonderful scene it has. Which means I’m going to need a lot of markers, haha!

The romance is great too. As the story begins, you start to sense who Oliver’s love interest will be even before you meet him in person (those who have read it will understand), and the best part is that it’s a light, uncomplicated, easy, and very satisfying romance. Things between Oliver and Liel are very fluid. They meet under crazy and hilarious circumstances (like everything in this book), and things flow naturally and with lots of chemistry from that moment on.

And even though they’re not the only focus of this book, since their relationship shares a lot of the spotlight with the rest of the characters, they don’t need to be for their relationship to charm you. It’s one of those romances that easily gets under your skin. They’re charming together, and every step they take in their relationship is surrounded by a certain tenderness and innocence that makes you empathize with them a lot. And when they finally have sex... Oh my! They’re explosive together, that's for sure, and that's all I'm saying

This book hasn’t even been officially released yet, and I already need the second one, which apparently will be titled Gratification in Gluttony and will be released in December 2024. The best part is that we’ll have it this year, and from the title, I can imagine who the next couple will be. I need it now, and the next one too! There are two couples in particular (although more are hinted at) whose books I need as soon as possible. For my mental and emotional health.

Is it December already? No? Damn, the wait is going to kill me!

Passing Through Purgatory by Nik Knight is the first book in their Passing Through Café series. It is a hilarious romp through Purgatory and parts of Hell as a human and a demon meet and find love together. Oliver Barnes lives with his best friend, Jude, in Chicago and just graduated from college. He is in desperate need of a job to pay his bills and nothing seems to be forthcoming there. The Hell realm has recently opened up to humans so he applies for an accounting job in the Greed District. He passes through the veil but there is a mix up on times the trains are scheduled to run from Purgatory and he misses the one he needs so he doesn’t get the job. As he is waiting for the train back to Chicago he sees a small building that houses the Passing Through Café so he goes inside for a drink and meets an amazing cast of demons who are going to make a great impact on his life. There is Gem, a spider like Araknis, Willow a dryad, Rusty a pink raccoon like Pycon demon, Zef, a green skinned 4 eyed Mantodea, Tad who looks like a frog, Toni who has shark like features, and the owners, Glyma, a beautiful Succubus, and Quin who is a red demon. All of these characters are going to make Oliver’s life very interesting as he gets a job working at the café and they learn a lot of some happy and some sad things about each other’s lives. Oliver had only been to the Hell realm once before visiting Gluttony where he got very drunk and made out with a demon. Then he ran into that same demon after going to see Zef perform at a club and they began to talk. Liel Karakis is a yellow Gymnot, and has electricity running through him. He lives on the east side of Gluttony and works in a legal firm in Greed as a corporate lawyer. He was enamored of Oliver when they first met but Oliver had lost his number when he woke up after being drunk. Liel isn’t going to let him get away again so they start having a series of dates, some of which include Oliver’s coworkers with some interesting results, and as they get to know each other they realize how much they like each other which leads to many very hot love scenes, especially since Liel’s parts are quite different from Oliver’s. And the electricity is flowing! Oliver hasn’t been very close to his parents but as his birthday approaches they want him to come home for a visit. He decides to invite Liel but it somehow turns into inviting everyone from the café which has some very funny results because his parents have never had demons at their dude ranch in Montana, and Lyle’s friends have never been to the human world before. While they are there Oliver makes a confession to his mother that he loves Liel which Liel (and everyone else) overhears which leads to a confession of love from both of them and then to the possibility of Oliver moving in with him. I absolutely loved this book. Nik Knight has made up a fantastic cast of characters with very unique personalities that you get to know extremely well and they are an integral part of the love story from the beginning to the end. All of them are worth getting to know as they help (and sometimes hinder) Oliver and Liel as they fall in love. And some have had some sad things happen in their lives as Hell is very prejudiced. Oliver is a great guy who wants to do what is right by every species so he is very careful. Liel is sweet and caring and wants to be with Oliver. They move slowly in their relationship because they both want it to be real. What I liked most about this book is that I was laughing out loud in a lot of places like “boomerangs, plungers, or cows”, the idioms they get wrong, and most especially when they go to Oliver’s parents’ dude ranch where Gem wants to be with the cows, what happens when the vet meets all the demons, and how sweet it is when Oliver and Liel ride Oliver’s horse. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like rom coms with a new take on Hell and the demons that live there, and a love story between a human and a demon who find their happily ever after.

I absolutely loved this book. I had no idea what to expect when I first started reading about Oliver's job hunt, but what a heartfelt and entertaining journey he ended up on. Stumbling into the Passing Through Cafe was the best mistake of his entire life, and I'm so happy he had the chance to become part of the team there. Because Oliver was a newbie to the Hell dimension, I got to experience every demon species, item, and custom for the first time alongside him. I related to his surprise, shock, nervousness, and fear as he stumbled into a world he knew absolutely nothing about and figured out how to adapt and expand his narrow worldview. I knew from the second he met Gem that they were going to be fast friends, but even the more intimidating staff members like Toni, Tad, and Rusty grew on me as Oliver got to know them better. I had so much fun watching them all bicker with each other, work together, and go out together, and I laughed until I had tears in my eyes multiple times at their silly shenanigans. Theirs was the kind of friend group who had each other's backs no matter what, and the way they accepted Oliver and his best friend Jude into the fold without question made me feel so warm and happy as I was reading. I really enjoyed getting to see all of them build strong bonds of friendship, share secrets with each other, and get comfortable being loud, wild, and excited about life together. The whole cast of characters made reading this book such an amazing experience, and when the focus turned to Oliver's love life I was even more ecstatic to see another area of his life go from dormant to vibrantly alive.

Liel was a welcome addition to the Passing Through crew, and it was so entertaining for me to watch him and Oliver flirt with everyone else's wingmanning and nosiness in the background. Oliver was painfully awkward and flustered the first time Liel stopped into the cafe to see him, and it was so much fun to experience those early stages of a crush with him. For two guys who had barely met, they had fantastic chemistry and could talk for ages about anything and everything. Their genuine interest in each other was so clear to me, and I had fallen head over heels before they'd even kissed. As Oliver and Liel grew the emotional intimacy of their relationship, the physical side of their connection was also quick to heat up. The two of them had some insanely hot nights together that melted my brain into a pile of mush, and I felt their closeness growing with each moment they got to spend together. The big culmination of their love story was meeting Oliver's parents, and that was every bit as chaotic and overwhelming as you would expect when bringing a new partner and handful of overexcited demons to a ranch in Montana all at the same time. That part of the story was hands down my favorite, not just because of how excited everyone was to see cows and horses but because it felt like a blending of Oliver's past and future, a way for him to show his family the most authentic version of himself even when he was worried it wouldn't meet their expectations. I feel like happy isn't a strong enough word to express how I was feeling at the end of their visit, and with Oliver and Liel fully in love and expressing it openly, there was nothing left to do except let them go so they could live the rest of their lives together. That doesn't mean I'm not eagerly awaiting the next book in this series, because now I *need* to see every single team member at Passing Through Cafe find the same amount of happiness that Oliver and Liel did.

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

Here's another ARC that I waited until the last minute to read...oops. Here's Nik Knight's "Passing Through Purgatory."

["When Oliver applied for a job in the Hell dimension on a whim, he didn’t expect it to turn his whole world—or his heart—entirely upside down.

Recently graduated at twenty-six, and two months behind on rent, Oliver Barnes is desperate. So desperate, in fact, that he applies for a job in the Greed district of Hell’s Pentagram. Together, they discover that, sometimes, love and happiness can be just a train ride away."]

This book was pure fucking CRACK! There were so many moments of hilarity and chaos. There were so many kooky and lovable characters, enough to fill a sit-com. It was perfect. I loooooooved that crew of the Passing Through Cafe.

Oliver kinda feels like me right now. Feeling misplaced and on the edge of money-less and not super wanting what your degree got you. He fell into a place that feels comfortable and fun and like home, even if its not what he imagined doing.

Oliver falls into a found family as crazy and as caring as possible, a gang misfits of demons from hell. Then he happens to fall in love, a love so true and easy that it feels too good to be true.

I cannot wait for the rest of this series. Nik has EASILY 2-3 more books out of this. I want the next one now...please?

Trigger Warnings: drugging/spiking of a drink, classism and bigotry, talk of previous sex work and the aftermath thereof, difficult parental dynamics, and more.

I have read a co-written series by Nicole Knight and Lily Mayne, but this was my first book by Nicole Knight solo, and oh my gosh when I say I loved it, that is a massive understatement. As soon as I finished this book, I was ready to start again!

Oliver is going through a rough time as a college grad living in an expensive city and struggling to find a job and make ends meet. That's something I think a lot of people his age can relate to. In this world, there is a portal between the hell dimension and the human world, and demons and humans are free to come and go. That doesn't mean the world is free of bigotry and discrimination, though. Oliver, however, is a very open-minded and kind human and he extends his job search to the hell dimension.

Through a series of misadventures, he ends up working at the Passing Through Cafe. Not his first choice of job, but it ends up being just what he needed. There is a whole cast of characters who work at the cafe and each one is unique and wonderful. Their antics (especially Gem's) are absolutely hilarious and entertaining. They bring Oliver into the fold with no hesitation, and together, the cafe staff is more family than coworkers.

On an outing with the cafe crew, Oliver drunkenly meets Liel, a gymnot demon. Thanks to Gem's wingman antics, Liel and Oliver are able to reconnect and it turns out they have crossed paths before! Romance blossoms quickly, and I was all-in for it. Liel and Oliver are so sweet and perfect together, and the steamy scenes... holy guacamole!

Of all the characters, Rusty is my favorite. There is something going on with him that I am dying to find out. Some other stories with the cafe crew were hinted at and I cannot wait for more from this series. I am blown away by Nicole's imagination creating all these unique characters and their dynamics as well as the overall worldbuilding of the series. It's unlike anything I've read before and I loved all of it.

Overall, this book was sweet and funny. There were some heavier topics explored with things that happened and Oliver dealing with his family and navigating the dynamics of not only a new relationship, but an inter-species one at that, but there is an HEA and it is lovely.

This is like nothing I've ever read before, and I had such a good time reading it. It's not actually YA, as it has explicit scenes and plenty of them, but it feels kind of YA with the big cast and focus on found family long before the other MC comes in. It's full of great humour and strong characters, and I loved all the side characters, especially Gem, Rusty and Toni. They seem like the most interesting people, and I can't wait to read more about them. I loved loved loved the scenes where they were all interacting, it was brilliant, and I frequently laughed so hard my stomach hurt.

The initial romance was fantastic, so swoony and sweet, and I really enjoyed it. We seemed to lose some of the tension after they actually consummated the romance, as often happens, and I felt it went off the boil in the last quarter or so. I don't quite know what this book is, or what it was trying to be. I enjoyed most of it very much, but it was maybe a bit too straightforward? The romance made up a fairly small section of the book, as the group cast kind of took over everything, and Liel as a character often faded into the background rather. There wasn't a big message or a complicated storyline like there often is with coming-of-age storylines, and there was no real struggle with anything really. I appreciate that I was laughing rather than crying, but I could have done with just a smidgeon of narrative tension. It just ended up feeling like it didn't know where it was going, and so, of course, it didn't really go anywhere. The ending was a bit underwhelming, but I'm super excited about where the series as a whole can go. I will definitely be reading more, as I love the world-building and all the cast at the café. Definitely an unusual book and a fascinating concept, and a low-angst and fun story.

4.25/5 This was a fun romp through a world full of all sorts of fascinating demons. We don’t get to see a ton of world-building, but we meet a lot of different demon species, and I enjoyed learning quirks about all of them. I found the number of co-workers at the cafe a little overwhelming at first, but they then established themselves, and I was able to keep them straight.

I’m generally less of a fan of romances where the MCs meet later in the book, which does happen here. In fact, I read a few other books between reading the blurb for this book and actually reading the book, so I came into it not remembering much beyond the basic purgatory cafe premise. So I actually thought for the first third of the book that Oliver and Gem were going to wind up together. There was enough flirting that this seemed plausible even if I wasn’t overwhelmed with chemistry. So it was a little disconcerting on the one hand when Liel showed up so late. But on the other hand, I really liked Liel, and I liked Liel and Oliver together a lot. So I wasn’t disappointed by the pairing, just a little thrown.

I mostly enjoyed the humour and the irreverence, though I’m not sure I could handle this group in real life, lol. It tends always to get a little wild and silly with Gem and the others around, and that afforded me a lot of genuine laughs, even if it could be a bit over the top. The birthday weekend just perfectly skirted that line of silly but with heart.

I appreciated the solid and strong emotions underpinning the story, the found family and friendships, Liel and Oliver both being uncertain in some ways, really taking the time to get to know one another as well as get more intimate. They definitely seem happier together, and it was nice to see. I’m looking forward to more in this series.

I received an ARC from GRR. This is my honest review.

How on earth (or Hell) should I review a story that’s full of activity and with so so many different things?

The Hell dimension created on and around the earth was wonderful, the creatures are diverse and extraordinary.
The main character is the twenty-six-year-old human Oliver Barnes who stumbled into a job in Purgatory, and somewhere further in the story we meet thirty-one-year-old Demon Liel, who lives on the east side of Gluttony and works as a corporate lawyer.

Missing his train meant for Oliver also missing his job interview and thereby the job.
But… by missing the train he got stuck in Purgatory’s The Passing Through Café and got a job offer there. He took it with both hands.

You have to know this cafe isn’t run by humans, Oliver is the only one. It’s also an empty in-between place, separating the human from Hell’s dimension. When you meet his colleagues ha!! So precious!
One night Oliver meets Liel, there is an instant attraction!

They are so adorable together, respectful, and vulnerable, don’t expect them to jump each other instantly, it’s quite at a slow pace, but the way they connect on different levels, they are just so adorable!
What a combination, their anatomy is completely different, a human and a demon creature with a … just read it yourself.

At times I was laughing out loud because the humor was fabulous, at times acceptable way ott, I had to stop reading now and then to keep breathing lol.
It’s all so brilliantly put together that everything I say about it will not do justice.
Brilliant piece of writing!

I loved, loved, loved this!

I am so ridiculously excited that this is a going to be a series! This book had me either snort-giggling, awwing or fanning myself the entire way through. It is sweet, hilarious, fun, full of found family and delightfully heartwarming. I love the Passing Through Cafe and everyone who works there (although I am insanely wary of Tad and her ninja throwing stars). A massive favourite of mine in books is found family and this delivers in a HUGE way on that front. Everyone at the cafe is slightly crazy but in the way that makes people awesome to be around. They are authentic and true to themselves even when it’s hard and that makes them so lovely to read about. I honestly would so happily be friends with this group of people (even if that meant I was almost certainly going to be mortified on a regular basis). Oliver and Liel were super cute. The book is a rom-com between Oliver and Liel but I’d say that it’s probably 50/50 split plot-wise between Oliver and his new group of friends and Oliver and Liel (which, again, I love!). It’s super low angst when it comes to their relationship though there are a few more somber/saddening/scary moments within the friend group (they’re all very well sign-posted in the CW. Plus, those moments are resolved well/lead to closeness that is actually incredibly heartwarming so it’s not a book where you really feel a sense of angst at all. I’m suuuper excited for the second book. There’s some interesting stuff going on between characters and I’m really interested to see if things go the way I expect them to!

It was fun :) It’s a first book of Nikole Knight for me and I was hesitant at first don’t know already why but how I was mistaken for a really long time! I wish I started sooner :) Loved the book, writing style and general mood!

I liked that MCs don’t immediately meet each other as the book starts. As I was introduced to the characters I was constantly guessing whoooo will be the future other half 👀 The way they actually met was intricate and it is the other thing that I appreciated: when you think that you know everything already no you don’t 😁

It is a low angst, humorous, romantic, creative story about the human who met his love in hell ❤️‍🔥 And don’t forget about the friends, colleagues and bosses 🤗

I loooved the fact that someone there was klepto 😆 And all the other personalities of main AND side characters were detailed and interesting 🦄 It made me want to read the rest of the series immediately after, especially because I still don’t know who it will be about. OK, one couple I can guess and I need this story ASAP 🤓 I want to read about pink trash panda too! 🤘🏼💕

Spicy read, definitely. An interesting turn on tentacles :)

The meet the parents part was also memorable and funny, so many things happened and not how I expected 😂

The book is a bit similar in vibe to the Goliaths of Wrestling series by Lilly Mayne so if you liked that series you might like this one too⚡️

Thank you Nikole Knight and GRR for the ARC! All opinions are my own and this is my honest review 💛

Passing Through Purgatory is a story I picked up because it had the potential to be entertaining and break up my run of disappointing reads. I will be honest and say that I went in without any real expectations beyond some amusement, which meant I was pleasantly surprised by the story.

Passing Through Purgatory gave me much more than expected. It was a story that pulled me in from the start, sucking me deep into the world and leaving me eager for more. I will be the first to admit it was not a perfect read - it took too long for the characters to meet, and things happened too quickly toward the end – yet the imperfections were not enough to take away from the fact that I had a lot of fun with the story. It easily pulled me in and had me invested in the characters. In fact, in many ways, I was more invested in the found family element than I was in the romance in this story. Due to this, I wish there had been a little bit more focus on the main characters without the other characters jumping in. At the same time, these moments played a large part in the fact that I now want to see things play out for the other characters.

All in all, Passing Through Purgatory was a fun start to the Passing Through Café. While there were some details that I wish had played out differently, such as more focus on the main characters, there was plenty throughout to leave me wanting more. If nothing else, I am certainly curious about the future of this series.

This book took me the first few chapters to really get hooked, mostly because I was waiting for a 'traditional' sort of rom com story and this book is all about the world building first. That's not me saying this isn't a romance because there absolutely is one and the HEA is wonderful; what I mean is that there are so many amazing characters introduced initially that I kept wondering who Oliver's other half would be out of all these new friends and that isn't what happened. Once Liel came on the scene a few chapters in then everything became much clearer for me and their chemistry was absolutely smoking. I really enjoyed them together but the reason I loved this book so much has to be Oliver's friends at the café. I was reduced to tears of laughter more than once. Gem, Toni and Rusty kept me in stitches and there were times when I just wanted to hug them all. I am SO curious about their backstories and I can't wait for more books set in this world (fingers crossed!). It just seemed to get better and better and it'll definitely be one I reread again whilst I desperately wait for more (please let there be more!). Overall, a fantastic read that is full of amazing characters, emotion, chemistry and a sweet HEA for the MCs. If you like this genre then I'd definitely recommend it.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

Two months late on his rent, on the verge of returning to his parent's ranch in Montana, Oliver really needed the accounting job he applied for. In the Hell dimension. Two missed train rides and a 'we decided to go in a different direction' text from the firm, he's done. Killing time waiting for the next interdimensional train to Chicago, he enters the Passing Through Cafe.
And the book explodes. The worldbuilding is delightful. Nik Knight slips in little jabs at RL like a DMV with a never ending line. The character building is awesome, maybe a little dragged out. But there are a lot of denizens in this dimension and they deserve the time taken to describe them.
Eclectic is the best word to describe the cafe crew and owners. And zany. And over the top matchmakers. Humans Ollie and Jude have found their people. Their family. Gem is every flirty barista you ever met. With six arms. Rusty is a cuddly raccoon-like demon. Deep down, deep, deep down. Ollie's parents are a surprise. The trip to their ranch had me howling.
And then there's Liel. He and Ollie are a perfect fit. And how can sex with a tentacled partner be anything other than kindle meltingly sizzling? There's also some sweet, thoughtful moments.
Very enjoyable. A quick, funny read. Need more Purgatory. And more ranch encounters.
I received an advanced copy of this book from GRR and this is my review.

This was a super fun book for any fans of monster romance! There were loads of laugh out loud moments and I really enjoyed the huge found family that Oliver finds himself in! Liel, Oliver’s love interest is sweet and loveable and I enjoyed their relationship building throughout the book.

Oliver is miserable when his last chance of securing a good job in Hell is dashed when he misses the train to the interview and is stuck in purgatory. Hopeless, he visits the cafe next door to the station and manages to land himself a job with the crazy crew of the Passing Through Cafe. From that point on we get to know the diverse and slightly unhinged group of demons who work at the cafe as well as Oliver’s love interest, Liel, a demon who is think is part electric eel? Basically all the demons have some animal characteristics - there’s a spider demon, a praying mantis demon and a raccoon demon to give a few examples!

Although I really loved this, it was very long - I do think elements of it could have been cut down and some of the speech was a little stilted/forced. But overall a great book and a really creative and different take on monster romance!

Read Passing Through Purgatory for:
✨ Human x demon
✨ Non-human anatomy
✨ Found family
✨ Laugh out loud funny
✨ Electrical shenanigans
✨ Everyone wants to hug a cow

I can easily say this is one of the most fun books of 2024! This
book has all the awesomeness we love in a MM rom-com, main characters to fall in love with, side characters who have fully developed personalities and hopefully will have their moment to shine, the ups and downs of a relationship of two different beings and and HEA that melts your cold, dark heart. Oliver is an extremely likeable human who turned a bad day in hell into a interesting encounter in purgatory. He meets a wild band of coffee shop demons who are a close knit family and welcome Oliver into their fold. Liel is a successful demon lawyer and he gives the persona that he has everything all together. They had met once before and while memorable, only Liel remembers. But when human and demon reunite the chemistry is palpable. Oliver is not a confident but he finds the courage to talk to Liel and ask him to give them a real chance. These guys easily fall into like with another and while they aren't operating with the same parts they managed to light up the sheets. This was my first time reading this author and will definitely not be my last! I guarantee you will be hooked by the first chapter title. Who knew Hell and purgatory could be so fun!

So entertaining

I loved everything about this book. Nikole Knight has a knack of creating unique characters and this one is peopled (or should I say 'demoned'?) with them.
I'm not going into specifics though I will say that the romance was both sweet and steamy, but I smiled a lot and laughed out loud too. Particular highlights included the morning after the work outing to the club, where much alcohol had been comsumed the night before and everyone was the worse for wear (and I have a very weird sense of humour) and when also Oliver arrived home to visit his parents. Both times, I laughed till I cried and my stomach hurt.
This story has a large cast of characters, all with completely different personalities. Outgoing, brash, combative, polite, reserved, Oliver's co-workers at the Passing Through Cafe generally have no filter, even the quieter ones. No subject is off limits, and the louder the better where Gem's concerned. Although this is a romance between Oliver and the sexy demon he's insanely attracted to, it's also a love letter to the rest of the cast who are front and centre most of the time too.
I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Oliver Barnes was desperate to find a job. He even applied to a job in Hell but missed the train, the interview and the job. With time on his hand waiting for the next train home, he finds a strange little coffee shop called Passing Through Café. He is delighted to find a job there amongst all the other deliciously eccentric employees. He soon finds himself involved with an attorney with tentacles, sharp teeth and electric charged fingers. Happiness can be found when you least expect it.

What an incredible cast of characters work at the café. They can take one little statement and turn it into a series of misinterpretations; usually a double entendre is involved. Laugh out loud scenes are countered by serious ones involving romance and falling love. And let’s not forget the hot scenes. It leaves you wanting more and more is coming. There are so many unique and loveable individuals just waiting for their own story. Kudos to Nik Knight for gifting us with this wonderful new series.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my personal opinion.

I loved this book and was recommending it to friends when I was only 20 pages in. The characters are so fun and unique and adding the demon realm setting added an extra layer of fun. This book is full of adorableness and humor... plus plenty of steam but there are a few things that people might have trouble handling and should pay attention to the triggers warnings.

Oliver and Liel have instant chemistry and it is very physically based but it's still an interesting romance and they fit well together. It does take a while for them to bump into each other, but once they do it's full steam ahead.

My only real issues with this book are mostly related to length. It feel like the book could be a bit shorter as there are some parts that drag a bit, and I wish they would have met sooner. but other than that I had a lot of fun reading this book and I can't wait to see where this series goes.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

Funny and touching story

This book made me laugh a lot, but it’s also very sweet. Oliver really finds his groove in the hell dimension that has been opened up in this version of earth. The characters that Nikole Knight has surrounded him with are absolutely delightful and each very different. I love the idea of the demon dimension as being so much like earth with jobs, neighborhoods, bars, coffee shops, prejudice, love and more. They are just slightly different twists of those things and Knight does a marvelous job of creating such an engaging place. Most of the humor comes from Oliver’s co workers and you are going to fall in love with the whole adorable crew. Oliver and Liel have a hot relationship with some very unusual sexy times due to interesting appendages that are great to read. Nuf said!!! As I am writing this review I keep thinking of more that makes this such a great story, but I can’t tell you everything, you need to go read it yourself. Cows!

Hilarious and adorable!

I cannot deal with how much I adored this book 🤣 I loved every minute of this ride and sincerely hope the author will continue on making this a series because I need more of this motley crew from the cafe! The side characters just make this book so good and definitely have you craving more and to find out who they will get their HEA's from. I can't even choose a side character I loved most, they all hold a special place in my heart ❤️

Liel and Oliver were so adorable together, it had me squealing as they fell in love 🥰 plus who doesn't love some fun demon/monster anatomical parts and spicy scenes? 😈🔥🔥 Can't recommend this enough. If you've loved Nik Knight's other monster romances, especially those with Lily Mayne, I'll have to say this story will definitely not disappoint! ❤️

Obsessed. Period. I loved everything about this story. It's just a hilarious, heart-warming time.

Oliver and Liel are just so precious that they hurt my heart honestly. If soulmates were real it would be them. Hands down. I will not take any blasphemy against them. The way Liel has Oliver tongue tied?!?! PLEASE.

The rest of the crew had me HOWLING. This is a friend group I wish I was in more than my addiction to redbull. There are a few hints of other couples that I'm wishing with EVERYTHING are real as the series continues. Please Nik, PLEASE 😭🙏🏻

This book is definitely a little different. It takes a big chunk of the book until we even see Oliver's love interest Liel so it's not a classic romance story. In my opinion only Oliver is the main character. His old and new friends are as much a part of this book as his lover is which is an interesting choice that I really liked. The book is well written and I appreciate the thorough world-building. Maybe it takes a little longer to actually get the story going but at least you feel right at home in that world. I really liked the found family vibe in the cafe, the diversity of characters and the respect in how they behave with each other. Also, they're fun - completely mental, over-the-top and invasive, but fun.

Passing through Purgatory: Passing Through Cafe is the first in the series. Such a great start. MM. Paranormal. Fated Mates. Found Family. Slow burn. Single POV. HEA.

Oliver is the Human MMC. He graduates from college and can't get a job in the human realm so he applies for a job in Hell {doesn't get it}. While in Purgatory he takes the only job he can get at "Passing Through Cafe". Oliver's life quickly becomes enmeshed with the incredibly ECCENTRIC staff at the cafe. He then meets Liel aided by Gems meddling.
Liel a Gymnot, corporate lawyer with electric fingers. He is all business, winning is the name of his game. He is a bit of a klepto, Hates cooking and is head of heels in love with Oliver.

This first third of the book is HEAVY in the world, species AND character building. It is a very complicated beginning to this book but gets super juicy after this. SO KEEP GOING.

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next book. I Need Rusty's HEA.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book is AMAZING and I'm mad I read it now (not really) instead of waiting for all the books in the series to come out because I didn't want to leave this world.

I keep stumbling over how to review this book b/c I have nothing more coherent than READ IT and prepare to laugh out loud. A lot. And maybe blush a little too because this book is hoooottttt. Oliver and Liel are the best couple and watching them fall in love is the sweetest- that story line in and of itself makes this book amazing. But when you add in the secondary characters? ::chef's kiss:: It's perfection. Cows, drag queens, Care Bears, maybe mafia connections, and teleporting - seriously, just read the book. You won't regret it.
