Paleo Sharks: Survival of the Strangest

Rate this book
If you think today's sharks are fearsome, wait until you see what swam in the oceans hundreds of millions of years ago! Creatures with snouts like saws, and spiral jaws. Sharks so large they could swallow whales whole. Timothy Bradley's vibrant illustrations and razor-sharp prose bring these ferocious fish and their tamer relatives to life with scientific detail. Learn how they survived catastrophic events that completely wiped other creatures out, and see which of their strange adaptations can still be seen in sharks today.

SHARK WEEK SHARK WEEK SHARK WEEK SHARK WEEK!!!

NO! THAT IS NOT PALEO, SHARK!!

i can eat sharkcam, tho, right???

oh, paleo shark… basically, this just means he will no longer be eating license plates or tires. but it also means his friends are going to have to put up with a lot of annoyingly complicated negotiations when they go to restaurants. "hey, guys - you think i can order the diver without the wetsuit? or get it on the side, maybe? if not, you wanna eat that part? hmmmm - are surfboards paleo?? what about wine? can i have wine?"

paleo shark is a pain in the ass.

but look how fit he's become!

merry shark week, everyone!

An amazing children's book I bought from the Harvard Museum of Natural History gift shop, Bradley introduces us to the world of extinct sharks. Silhouettes on each page demonstrate the size of each species compared to a human swimmer & modern day shark. The paintings illustrating the sharks are beautiful & very colorful, if a tad cartoonish. A brief bibliography is provided for further reading. I wish there were books like this for adults (hint, hint Richard Ellis or Dougal Dixon).

This book was scientific and detailed. However, it wasn't engaging enough to keep my eight year old's attention. I still enjoyed the book myself and he was more interested in the Megladon which wasn't until the end of the book. Despite that, I do enjoy looking back and seeing the interesting species that have come through history.

A great collection of extinct sharks and facts about them. It was a bit dry for my 6 year old but I still very much appreciated this book.
