Nominee for Best Romance (2017)
Nevada Baylor has a unique and secret skill—she knows when people are lying—and she's used that magic (along with plain, hard work) to keep her colorful and close-knit family's detective agency afloat. But her new case pits her against the shadowy forces that almost destroyed the city of Houston once before, bringing Nevada back into contact with Connor "Mad" Rogan.

Rogan is a billionaire Prime—the highest rank of magic user—and as unreadable as ever, despite Nevada's "talent." But there's no hiding the sparks between them. Now that the stakes are even higher, both professionally and personally, and their foes are unimaginably powerful, Rogan and Nevada will find that nothing burns like ice . . .

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

And the moral of this rererererererereread is: not sure why I bother with slightly temperamental, somewhat homicidal crustaceans when despicably cute, revoltingly fluffy ferrets are obviously the key to world domination.

See what I mean?

New rating: no longer rating this book because Goodreads will probably implode if I do. You're welcome and stuff.

And the moral of this rerererererereread is : there is a very slight, tiny possibility that the Butcher of Merida this book might perhaps maybe make me feel a teensy little bit like this:

💉 Some Clueless People Use Illegal Drugs to Get High But That's Just Because They're Um Clueless and Stuff and Have Never Read a Tactile IA Book Before Ha Buddy Rerererererererereread (SCPUIDtGHBTJBTUCaSaHNRaTIABBHBR™) with the IA Addicts 💉

Previous rating: 40 million stars and a half.
New rating: 50 million stars and a half. And then some.

And the moral of this rerererererereread is : if we lived in a perfect world, there would be a Kate Daniels/Hidden Legacy crossover series. It would be called Wild Magic Hotness. In this series Kate and Nevada would meet, fall in 💕lurve💕 at first sight and kick ALL the villainous villains’ asses to oblivion scrumptiously ever after. Curran would hook up with Cornelius (because animal mage, duh), Rogan with Barabas (these two are meant for each other, I’m telling you) and Augustine with Desandra (I’m sure she’ll love his flawless plums and magically-enhanced pork sword). Grandma Frida would live in sin with Roland and Penelope would marry Doolittle. Ascanio would have the hots for Leon, Catalina would date Julie, Derek would succumb to Troy’s charms, Bern would fall for Ghastek, and Arabella would be on Baby Conlan/Baby B/Cuddles/Grendel/Bunny/Talon/Mr. Himalayan Cat babysitting duty because she’s way too young to be thinking about Tactile stuff. This series would be the best thing since sliced barnacles Kate Daniels/Hidden Legacy/Innkeeper Chronicles/insert anything IA here, and the prospect of new instalments being released would leave us feeling like this:

In other words: Same old, same old.

P.S. Rogan = meow. Also, Rogan = mine .

[May 2017]

Previous rating: 30 million stars and a half.
New rating: 40 million stars and a half. And counting.

And the moral of this rereread is :

I want. I want what? I want this:

① I want to be Nevada Baylor when I grow up. QED and stuff.

② I want to adopt a pet dragon. Just so that he can "drive me nuts with sheer frustration." Oh wait, said dragon is already safely locked up in the high security wing of my harem! It's so cool to be me sometimes.

③ I want to be adopted by Nevada's family. Just so that I can be somewhat mortified by my teenage sisters' awesome collage skills, and have Grandma Frida text me about my not-boyfriend at the most inconvenient times. That would be slightly awesome and stuff.

④ I want Rogan to want my bullshit. DUH.

⑤ I want to be an animal mage, and have my own ferret army. Oh wait, does my breeding murderous crustaceans count as being an animal mage? Probably. Oh wow, it really is really cool to be me! Hmmm…I wonder how the cunning ferrets would get along with the slaughterish crustaceans, though. I think I better ask Fleet Admiral DaShrimp to investigate the matter thoroughly before I send him on a Search and Kidnap Cornelius' Beasties Mission (SaKCBM™).

Yes, this is what DaShrimp looks like when he thoroughly investigates stuff. Pretty hot, huh?

⑥ I want to put a bullet through little head. I might also want to cut cut cut, slice slice slice and chop chop chop chop into tiny little pieces. For good measure and all that.

⑦ I want to create a sanctuary for dudomancers and dick fuckers. And for people who make fart noises when hitting their desks with their heads, too.

And that is all. Until next time. Toodle-oo and stuff.

[April 2017]

Previous rating: 20 million stars and a half.
New rating: 30 million stars and a half. Obviously.

And the moral of this reread is :

And also:

P.S. I want to be Nevada when I grow up. And magically mess with people's little heads. It would complement my other nefarious abilities quite nicely I think.
P.P.S. Rogan is mine. DUH .

[December 2, 2016]

I could write a review for this book. Of course I could. And taunt you poor Roganless souls mercilessly. But I'm not like that. Oh no. I have a heart and all that crap. Therefore, I will NOT say a single word about this book until the day it is officially published. Nope nope nope. Not a single word. Oh no. But several? Oh yes, definitely.

If you liked Burn for Me, you are going to LUUURRRRRVE White Hot. Too bad you have to wait another 6 months to read it.

If you thought the world building in Burn for Me was super uber cool, and wanted to know more about the magical stuff, and had tons of questions about Nevada's magic, and were really curious about her family and were wondering what sort of awesomely amazing things the Andrews had in store for White Hot, you are going to LUUURRRRRVE this book. Too bad you have to wait another 6 months to read it.

If you thought Rogan is mine was slightly HOT, and that the chemistry with Nevada was fairly glorious, and that their banter was somewhat wondrous, and that the sexual tension was considerably yummy, you are going to LUUURRRRRVE this book. Too bad you have to wait another 6 months to read it.

P.S. Quick message to those who think they know what TACTILE TACTILE TACTILE means: hahahaha. You silly people. You have NO idea.

If you are a fan of the IA Zoo, and love all the splendidly fantastic pets/creatures/critters/whatevers they invariably come up with, and thought Burn for Me was painfully lacking in the Awesome Beasts Department (ABD™), and were wondering if the Andrews would make up for this in White Hot, you are going to LUUURRRRRVE this book. Too bad you have to wait another 6 months to read it.

» And the moral of this I Promised I wouldn't Say a Single Word about this Book but I'm Full of Crap and You Should Know Better than to Trust me Crappy Non-Review (IPIwSaSWatBbIFoCaYSKBttTMCNR™) is: the crappier the IA book cover, the awesomer the IA book. And that, my Little Barnacles, is an immutable law of the universe.

P.S. Don't know what to get for the Scourge of Mexico this Christmas? Buy him a cat. Trust me on that one.
P.P.S. I have another immutable law of the universe for you: Rogan is Mine. QED and stuff.

ARC kindly provided by the author in exchange for...NOTHING. No review, no body part, no soul. Nada, rien, zilch, zip. Because Ilona is shrimping awesome like that.

November 28, 2016: there is a slight possibility that I might be in possession of an early copy of this book. Slight. Might. Muahahahaha and stuff.

P.S. I love you too.

The first time I read BURN FOR ME, I had concerns about literally Mad Rogan. I mean, yeah, he was effing hot, but when Nevada had to explain to him, over and over again, why he shouldn't (b/c yes, brat, we all know you can) kill people just b/c they annoy you . . . I repeat, I was concerned.

In WHITE HOT those concerns were answered, and HOO BOY, if I'd thought he was hot before . . . *chants* Tactile, tactile, tactile . . .

Nevada Baylor has a rare gift in a world that prizes magical ability above all things. In BURN FOR ME we learn why it's been kept a secret--for her own mental health and happiness--but in the second installment of HIDDEN LEGACY, secrecy becomes impossible to maintain.

Her first "mistake" is using her Truthtelling to find the location of a kidnapped child. B/c now they know she's out there. Then when a group of mercenaries attack her home and family (with tanks and summoned monsters and FIRE and shit), and the only way to get 100% reliable information from the lone surviving attacker is for Nevada to take it . . .

The more people who know about a thing, the harder it is to keep a lid on it.

And now that people outside her immediate family (who love her unconditionally) know what she can do, she's faced with their fear:

People were staring at me . . . A couple of them gripped their weapons in alarm. I had horrified the professional soldiers. I looked at my mother. Sadness softened her face, her mouth slack.
It hit me. I was the monster on the street. Without me, they would’ve questioned and even tortured this veteran mercenary. They would’ve done it with the understanding that he would resist and he wouldn’t have faulted them for it, because in their place he would’ve done the same. There was a twisted kind of professional courtesy about it all. But me, I didn’t torture. I broke his will without even breathing hard. Each one of them could see themselves in the mercenary’s place. I could make them tell me all their secrets and that was more frightening than Rogan stopping a massive tanker truck at full speed.
I’d never felt so alone in my whole life.

But before it can swallow her whole:

Rogan stepped between me and them, his eyes full of something. Whatever it was—pride? Admiration? Love?—I held on to it like it was a lifeline. He understood. At some point in his life he had stood just like that, while people stared at him in horror, and he must’ve felt alone, because now he was here, and he was shielding me from their judgment.

*rubs fist over heart*

So even before we were given a legitimate explanation for the ease with which he snuffed out lives I saw it. "It" being why these two were perfect for each other.

But as lovely as all that is, there is MORE to this story then a romance that gives you the swoons.

There is Nevada's hilarious family. Like her grandmother, the mechanic who can communicate with armored vehicles and who claims spoils of war:

“What is it, Hanh?” Rogan asked.
“She marked all of the ATVs with her initials!” Hanh declared.
“Because they’re mine,” Grandma Frida growled.
“She doesn’t get all the ATVs.”
Rogan’s face took on a very patient look.
“Yes, I do. I tagged them, they’re mine.”

Her cousin Leon who commentates battle (and is not in fact a sociopath, I promise):

“I’m a veteran badass. I’ve seen bad shit. I’ve done bad shit. I’ve survived five months in a jungle eating pinecones and killing terrorists with a pair of old chopsticks. I’m one bad motherfucker.”
Behind me Rogan laughed.
“I’ve got two days to retirement. After I kill everyone here, I’ll go to my retirement party. They’ll serve shrimp on crackers and give me a gold watch, and then, I’m going to have my midlife crisis and buy a Porsche and . . . Oh shit, my head just exploded.”

And that, my friends, is only the beginning.

Things you learn in WHITE HOT:

1. Nevada is not the only magically gifted Baylor girl.

2. Rogan's mysteriously mysterious background, both military and family.

3. Mr. Baylor's mysteriously mysterious family.

And that's just off the top of my head.

This is the third time I've read WHITE HOT (I beta read it twice last summer) and it will not be the last. This series has everything: romance, family, hilarity, a compelling story, a well-crafted and interesting world, GAH. I will come back to it over and over again, b/c it makes me FEEL things. When the villains are willing to sacrifice children as a means to an end, my RAGE is tangible. My heart breaks for Nevada when fear and ignorance make her feel like an abomination, and for Leon who believes himself mediocre in a family of exceptionals, I'm giddy as I watch Rogan pursue the woman he sees as living sunlight in a world of darkness, and a hundred other feelings besides. Not for the last time, I'm telling you that if you have not experienced the Andrews' worlds, you are doing yourself a disservice. They are the BEST. Highly recommended.

I keep thinking that I'm going to write you guys a better review of this. But no matter what I say it will not be as awesome as the words in the book and the fantastic blend of humor, sexual tension and action.

description

This was one of my favorite descriptions in the book.

he had thunder on his brow and lightning in his eye. I never understood what that phrase meant until Rogan’s face demonstrated it for me.

Yes I know it is just release day but it is also reread day for me. SO EXCITED I couldn't wait any longer to share this book with the rest of the world.

Original Review July 2016 (from the beta)

Wow…wow…wow.

The Andrews do not disappoint. This book had everything I wanted and more.

The sexual tension was…

description

The number of times something Rogan said made me swoon…..3, 7, 9, 23. Actually so many I don’t remember.

description

But beyond the Rogan and Nevada romance was such a fantastic story full of new magic. Nevada’s magic, her families, her enemies and Cornelius’s (the animal mage from Burn for Me) magic was amazing I want to have his powers because….

Ninja Ferrets!

description

Ilona Andrews always comes up with some great monsters and we are not disappointed in this. There are some crazy beasties and a little more exploration of things that can come from the arcane realm.

This story had dark moments, romantic moments, cute adorable (Rogan with a Cat) moments, wtf moments, tense how are they going to get out of this alive moments and so much more.

But this still won’t be out for awhile so here is one quote to hold you over.
Enter my lair, said the dragon. I have shiny treasure for you to play with, I’ll keep you warm and safe, and if it suits my purpose, I’ll chain you to the floor and kill your client by throwing quarters at him with my magic.

Full Review to Come Closer to Release Date.

Pre-Review

Everything else goes on hold now......This gets my undivided attention.

After my quick reread of Burn for Me I'm totally ready to beta this.

Reread 2023: I. Love. This. Series.

— — — —

Oh boy. Where do I start?

This is the type of series that draws you in from the get-go, grips you the whole way, then spits you out all chewed up, wanting to claw your hair out while you wait for the next installment.

If you look at the GR page for White Hot, it's a slew of five-star reviews from obsessed readers who have considered selling their souls to Ilona Andrews in exchange for book 3.

So what makes Hidden Legacy so addictive? I'll give my 3 biggest reasons real quick.
1. The world, my god, the world. Shaped by a multi-faceted magic system, it has incorporates fantasy into our modern world to give us a fascinating social system, power plays and political intrigue.

2. Supporting characters who are so creative and detailed, each and every one could sustain his/her own spin-off series.

3. An antihero you can't help but fall for. Seriously. If you're not in love with Connor Rogan, what the hell went wrong in your life?

That, in a nutshell, explains my love for Hidden Legacy so far. If I haven't managed to convince you to pick up the series, then -
-first of all, you haven't read Burn for Me yet? What the hell?
-secondly, go read all the other reviews endorsing the series. We'll win you over eventually.

Mwahaha!

Maybe a gazillion ★★★★★ would be enough.... but probably not!!

Let's talk expectations. .. As all of us devoted readers know expectations can be the worst kind of plague. They make you excited and often a little bit manic and most of the time they lead to you wanting very specific things. Obviously the authors not being a mind readers can't deliver exactly what your overzealous imagination has come up with for their characters. And even if they could read minds, yours is probably not the only overexcited one they would have to satisfy. But is this ever a problem with IA? Nope. Just nope. They deliver every freaking time. ... even their "average" books are only average when compared to their other books, and much better than most other authors' awesome ones.

So now, having just finished this book (and I feel so lucky for having read this ahead of time) I actually have to write a vague enough review so that I don't spoil anyone's experience with this. Me... the Spoiler Queen!

So in very few words, what should one expect of this book...

Action

This should not come as a surprise since IA always deliver in this part. Fighting, car chases, magic duels, mythical creatures,... are IA's bread and butter and this book was no different!

Romance

This series is more romantic than Kate Daniels. The first book had enough sexual tension to light a room, this one had enough to light a city. I am a romance kind of girl so was I annoyed by this? Not freaking likely! Especially since the emotions made Mad Rogan's and Nevada's back-and-forths no less hilarious.

Plot, story, writing

When has IA ever failed with a plotline? This book was one of the "Prime" examples of why I love this couple so much. This is a short series so these books are not stand-alones. I wouldn't advise reading them out of order. This book did have a short of beginning and end in the storyline but it was really only a part of the overall story arch. But there was no confusion or repetition of useless information. Everything was done so masterfully that you just kept devouring information and yet you were never fed up. The plot was complicated enough to keep you glued but not a tangled mess you couldn't make sense of.

Humor

Two words: Ferret spies!

Characters

Despite all the greatness of the above, we all know that the real strength of IA's books comes from the characters and their development. Both the main and secondary characters are always full of uniqueness and awesomeness and plenty of times crazyness. This book was no different. We get to know Nevada and mad Rogan grow right along with Nevada's family and their friends. We watch Nevada coming into her power and having to make difficult decisions, both personal and professional. We learn more about my Mad Rogan(*sigh*) and what makes him tick. We learn about her family and their unique weirdness. We get to know Augustine and Cornelius. Everyone is special, everyone has hidden and obvious depths and everyone is exciting in their own way. Even the villains are interesting!

This is as far as I can go without spoilers. Just read the book... it's worth it!

I don't want to go in too much detail over the book. I truly believe you should go in blind and discover all the epic twists, turns, world building and magic for yourself. I already want to re-read this one and get my hands on the third one.

Better than the first. I'm here for the witty banter. Not so much for Rogan and his alpha douchiness. I'm also super over the hating on women not related to this female lead.

i want a mad rogan :(

honestly though, this was fantastic. very glad i gave these books a second chance because they're the perfect blend of plot & romance that i need in my life. also love that i have another great series to recommend people that are looking to transition from YA fantasy romance to something more adult but not too smutty.

i also immediately started the third book in the series, so you know the series has to be good.

The sequel is just as racy, exciting, sexy and endearing as the first novel. We get to learn more about Rogan's past, House politics and Nevada's family. Also the conspiracy we uncovered in the first volume gets even more dangerous. On to the 3rd and last in the series.

God, I love this series. Especially that terrible cover. If it's depicting what I think it's depicting in this book then lawlz, because ain't no time for sexings when you're about to be dead. I'm not going to say anymore on that because spoilers, but seriously, L-O-L.

When I finished BURN FOR ME and found out the sequel wasn't out yet, there were tantrums. This is precisely why I avoid new series. I have zero patience. If I like a book, I want the next one in my hand, IMMEDIATELY, thanks, for the low, low price of NOW.

Instead I had to wait a month.

F**k.

And then I had to wait for the library copy to become available.

F**k.

Which it did. On the day I left for Japan.

F**K.

Luckily, I had the book for, like, 30 days, so I just saved it for when I got back and then literally as soon as I'd stowed all my travel gear and snarfed all that there was to be snarfed, I sat down and read this book in a single night - JETLAG AND ALL. After being awake for 36 hours, and then having one hell of an I-feel-like-death episode following the 16 hour time difference, I stayed up until 4:30AM PST reading this sucker, because oh my God it was so good, I could not.

I just reviewed CLEAN SWEEP and even though I didn't like that book nearly as much as this one (no Rogan, no tactile, no nada), I had to praise Andrews on her world-building. I haven't read anything stale by her, and the world in her Hidden Legacy series is no exception. In this world, certain humans have superhuman powers and are organized by House and by how powerful they are. The main character has the ability to tell when people are lying. Her love interest has the ability to have sex with people psychically. And also level buildings with his mind and kill people with quarters, but blah, blah, blah, that's not what has all y'all hollering. Let's be honest here.

LET'S BE HONEST.

Anyway, in WHITE HOT, people are being murdered and Cornelius, the animal mage from the previous book, comes to Nevada to help avenge his wife. Since the murderer might be a Prime (someone with the most magical power), they end up working with Rogan, too. Because pooling resources is good, blah, blah, blah. SORRY I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE SEXUAL TENSION. So Nevada and Rogan are trying to figure out the conspiracy while also basically acting out the song lyrics of virtually every teenage pop song out there. So basically, I am like :D

:D :D :D :D :D

There's a lot of ARE THEY FINALLY GOING TO DO IT? in this book, and then a lot of NOPE, JK. And then finally, there's what's basically a chapter-long sex scene, because I think the authors felt bad for torturing us and making us wait a book and a half for these two to finally get together.

Is it worth it?

:D

If I had one qualm, it's that the world-building can sometimes be confusing. So far, it's great, just complex enough to be interesting and intriguing, but I do think that's something the authors should watch out for. It's easy to get tangled up in a too-complicated world and forget the details. But given the brilliance of these two, I'm not particularly worried. I bet this is going to be awesome.

NOW WHERE IS MY COPY OF BOOK THREE?

*moseys on over to the page for WILDFIRE*

4.5 stars. This is a really great urban fantasy despite having maybe the worst cover ever. Review first posted on Fantasy Literature. Fair warning: Some spoilers in this review for the first book in this series, Burn for Me.

In White Hot (2017), the second book in Ilona Andrews’ HIDDEN LEGACY urban fantasy series, we return to a magical version of Houston, Texas, where some people (typically the rich and powerful) have inheritable magical powers. Nevada Baylor is from a not-particularly wealthy family that runs a private investigation firm, but she and some other members of her family have magical powers that are suspiciously strong for a family with no reputation at all as magic users. Actually, Nevada is a rare truthseeker: she not only knows when others are lying to her, but also recently realized that she can compel them to tell her the truth. But she’s trying to keep her magical power secret to avoid the trouble that public knowledge of it would bring.

It’s two months after the end of Burn for Me and the near-destruction of Houston. Nevada Baylor hasn’t seen Connor “Mad” Rogan lately, since she told him she wasn’t interested in a fling, and she assumes that he’s moved on, despite the intense feelings they felt for each other. Nevada makes a couple of fateful decisions: First, she decides to use her newfound power of magically forcing someone to tell her the truth, to compel a mass child molester/murderer to confess where he’s hidden the last girl he kidnapped, who authorities believe is still alive. Augustine Montgomery, who holds the mortgage on the Baylor’s business, warns her that if her abilities become known it could be dangerous for her personally, but she can’t stand idly by. Nevada takes the precaution of disguising herself for the confrontation with the molester, but she knows she’s taking a risk that word of her spectacular powers will spread.

Secondly, against her better judgment, Nevada agrees to take on an investigation for Cornelius Harrison, a gifted animal mage who appeared briefly in Burn for Me. His wife has been murdered while on the job as a lawyer for House Forsberg (hard to believe anyone would want to kill a lawyer, let alone four of them!) and he’s getting stonewalled on the details of her death. It’s clear that some of Houston’s magical Houses are involved in a far-reaching conspiracy. Unsurprisingly, as Nevada begins investigating Cornelius’ case, Rogan makes his long-awaited appearance. He has his own compelling reasons for being interested in this case ― as well as in Nevada.

White Hot continues right where Burn for Me left off, with the fast-paced mix of adventure and romance that characterizes Ilona Andrews’ books. We learn more about the overarching conspiracy that endangers the life of almost every person in Houston, and Nevada and Rogan’s relationship continues to develop. The whole Baylor clan is back, as sassy and raucous as ever. Nevada’s younger teenage sisters, Catalina and Arabella, became more interesting and discernable personalities, and even are able to contribute to the investigation in some unexpected ways.

One of the highlights in White Hot is the role of Cornelius and his animals: he has a mental rapport with beast and can train them to do incredible tricks, though they’re much more than stunts. There’s a scene with some criminally-minded ferrets that is beyond cute.

description

As much as this scene will warm the heart of animal lovers, Cornelius also lets Nevada know that he has definite plans to avenge his wife’s death, though he’s close-mouthed about how he intends to do that.

The Andrews author team excels at world-building, and one of the more intriguing aspects of the HIDDEN LEGACY series is its delving into the genetic aspects of magic and the effect this has had on magic users and their Houses socially. Some types of magic are more compatible than others. Dynasties are built around particular types of magic, and marriages are ruthlessly arranged to try to achieve the best possible combination to have magically gifted children that will keep the House in a position of power. There are various levels of magical power ― Prime, Significant, Notable ― and a House without a Prime is no longer a recognized House. That, too, plays a role in the plot of White Hot, in more than one way.

White Hot has a rather cheesy romance novel cover, which is actually fitting, considering that it contains a several-pages-long explicit sex scene. Personally I thought it was over the top, especially since both parties to it are massively beaten up and bruised and Nevada has two broken ribs at the time. Apparently the painkillers in this world are magical too.

White Hot is a compelling, compulsively readable novel that kicks the HIDDEN LEGACY series into an even higher gear. The reason for the title of this series becomes clear in a way that segues into the plotline of the third book, Wildfire, to be published in July 2017. If you’re a fan of the urban fantasy/romance genre and have any question at all about whether this series is worth your time, the answer is emphatically yes! … and you can skip or savor the long sex scene, according to your personal inclination.

This series, just like Kate Daniels, gets stronger and stronger with every book. The writing team of Ilona Andrews excels at world-building, but also at creating strong characters with goals you really want to cheer for. This was kind of a continuation of book one, but also a separate story arc as well, where a character we previously met comes to Nevada for her investgative services after his wife is murdered, and as is expected, the path to finding her killer is tangled and requires the help of Connor Rogan. The chemistry between them only continues to build. I enjoy the way they handle romance. There is usually instant attraction, but it takes several books to build, which makes it that much more rewarding. Very steamy in this book, and always based on something real. 5/5 stars.

Confession time: I'm a TOTAL Ilona Andrews nerd/super-fan!!

When I met the writing duo at RT this year and got a SIGNED PAPERBACK (meep!!), I just about died. I was saving the book for a special time because I LOVED Burn for Me with a passion and I knew White Hot would be a winner. So when I sort of hit a reading slump this week, I picked up that glorious paperback and got to work.

AND I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN.

I stayed up until 3:48 am finishing it! This is not a drill!

Okay, I'll admit the book isn't perfect, perfect. But honestly, it's the most compulsively readable book I've read in ages. I literally couldn't put it down. It was EXCITING, romantic, abundantly entertaining, and just sooooooo damn good!

I couldn't stop thinking about it. I'm STILL thinking about it. I want many more stories in this world. I want all of Nevada's family to have their own freakin' series! I want more, more, more, MORE!!

Just awesome. Totally worth the wait to get the signed paperback by the authors themselves.

I LOVE books by Ilona Andrews.

Over the years I noticed that IA series become better while the series progresses. It's so rare but IA sequels are even better than the first book!! I don’t know what the secret ingredient is but it happens every single time.

Maybe it’s the way they take their time, plan the series in advance, adding complexity and depth not only to the story but also to the characters. Who knows. All I know is that nobody can beat an Ilona Andrews book.

In White Hot the characters were more deeply explored, not only Nevada and Rogan but also their families, friend, and the different houses were generously mentioned. With every book the intricacy of the story increases, more layers are added to the plot which in turn guarantees a captivated audience – in this case that would be ME.

I fell even more in love with Nevada and Rogan than I already was. In book ONE I was fascinated, book TWO had me cheering them on – and in book THREE I was infatuated.

If you love a really great fantasy romance, with a kick-ass heroine, a strong hero, a wonderful fictional family, and a story that gets better with each book - you need to go and read it and have fun!

Uggghhh, this cover is still atrocious, but the content is awesome. :)

Reading felt like drinking this.

description

It promised a lot and did it deliver! It went right up to my head and made me feel fabulous. :)

Ilona & Gordon just went and did it again: reducing me to tears / laughter while making me hold my breath till the end and then of course serious deprivation, book hangover.

The story takes up shortly after the events of Burn for Me and it has a very strong and intriguing start. It reads just like a "simple" intro before we get plunged into the main action, but you just know that it will have wider implications.
Though Dina from The Innkeeper Chronicles, Volume One stands closer to me in character, I love Nevada. She is still smart and strong, has high moral and professional standards. I also love every last member of her wonderful, loyal Family and was happy to learn more about them collectively and individually in this book, but of course I want more.

Rogan is as charmingly anti-social as ever and I cannot help liking him. He reminds me a bit of Dr. House: would probably drive me mad in real life, but is fascinating on page (on screen).
“Have dinner with me,” I asked. “At my house. You can help me explain to my mother and grandmother what happened to my work vehicle.” (...)
“Do you think your mother might try to shoot me?”
“Possibly.”
“Then absolutely. I wouldn’t miss it.”

The Enemy (whoever they are): their brutal and blood-chilling efficiency in pursuing their goals takes your breath away and they always seem to be one step ahead of Nevada, Rogan & Co. Needless to say, that it makes the book even more tense and gripping.

I also loved the other secondary characters: Cornelius (his story just broke my heart), his daughter and his animals and especially Augustine. It is a wonderful touch from the authors: Augustine is an illusionist, always presenting a perfect facade to the world (I wonder what is lurking behind), yet he has absolutely no illusions about/to himself. Great characterisation!

World-building was taken up to a new level: the complexity of the magic Houses-politics, the role of Primes and the issues of magic + genetics were brilliantly developed and presented.

But the cover is even more hideous than the one before - utterly revolting. :D

Do you think IA was poking fun at their own cover with this?

"His (Rogan's) back and ass are one long bruise with a helping of concrete road rash, so his dreams of being a nude model are shattered for a while."

And this?

"Howling did a number on your (Nevada's) face, so you won’t be modeling in the near future either." :)

Oh, book, how I love you! Let me count the ways:

♥ Ilona Andrews can do no wrong. No, I don't know them. No, I don't have any stake in their writing career. I'm just a simple fan-girl sitting in front of a computer asking them to keep writing.

IA:

♥ The main characters, Nevada and Rogan, are awesome. Their chemistry is amazing.

Maybe I should roll down the window to let some of the sexual tension out. We needed a distraction, or I’d end up pulling over and we’d end up in the back seat, doing . . . things.

♥ But, don't worry, because in typical Ilona Andrews style, the side-characters are also awesome. They are all complex and feel like real, fleshed-out characters - no cardboard cut-outs. As a matter of fact, the side-characters are so good that I would love a book on a few of them. It's like they have this whole life thing going on even when they aren't in the current story. Weird.

Yeah, I feel like there's a story here.

♥ Along with action, romance, and magic, there is a side of comedy.

“I, for one, welcome our new Mad Rogan Overlord. I’m eager to learn and prove to be a valuable member of his team.”
Best Simpsons line ever...

And the number one reason you need to read this book: ninja ferret heist.
That's right. It gots one.

Thank you, ninja ferret!

Listened to the audiobook 3/30/2022. I think this second book is my favorite, and not even because of the excellent ferret heist. ♥️

Bought the book for my Kindle and then purchased the audio when I got to about 30% Just finished a reread in preparation for Wildfire. I'll be back again someday to write a proper review. I've got all these highlights and notes, but no patience! It was woo-hoo good, all my wildest dreams came true. Rogan. RoganRoganRoganRoganRogan!

Update: This is it? The cover redesign is a magical greenish background and a weird font? Did the publishers decide to drive us crazy? All I can say is that Adam Pierce and Grandma Frieda probably approved this cover. I AM STILL DYING TO READ THIS! Do not let cover-ug discourage you folks. I love this series. I love it like a love song baby. READ IT.

(Insert generic rant about covers.)

Putting my intense hate aside for just a moment, I do need to clarify that I loved the actual text of this book. I've gotten through all of the Kate Daniels series and the Innkeeper stuff, but I really ought to spell this out... I think I am in love with this series and it's even better than the others.

Sheesh. It's really a case of misleading expectations thanks to that damn cover. I mean, technically, it has a strong romance plot through it, but for the most part, it's magical PI stuff with an intensely powerful city-killer who's in love with Nevada, our main character... not, I should mention, the state.

And even pushing that aside, we have wonderful character development, solid and near perfect progression and change of circumstances, and very cute moments with the family. What else could we need? Well, there's always murder, revenge, political stuff revolving the Primes, and multiple near-death experiences culminating in a really hot scene after so much cold... but that's just icing on the cake.

It's a pure pleasure to read and you know what? As a UF, it's rather unique because it focuses almost entirely on a great magic system... without vamps or weres at all. WHAT???? A UF WITHOUT vamps or weres? GET OUT OF HERE! :) Seriously. It only rises higher in my estimation from here. :)

Full Review

I do not have the words to say how amazing this book is, honestly 5000 stars would not be a high enough rating! If you enjoyed Burn for Me you aren't even going to know what to do with yourself after you finish White Hot, it left me absolutely desperate for Wildfire so its a very good job that they're being released so close together.

I loved every single minute of this story, the chemistry between Rogan and Nevada blows my mind, let's face it EVERYTHING about Rogan hits my hot spots - there wasn't a scene with him in it that didn't have me swooning and fanning myself! He's an intense, brooding, full on alpha male who is as hot as Hades and has a slightly vulnerable squishy centre that you only spot if you look hard enough.

The world building was great before but OMG there is so much more to discover in this book, about the different kinds of magic, about Nevada's abilities and her family history, about the crazy magical creatures that can be pulled out of the arcana and even about the way the different Houses handle their disputes. I have to say that Ilona & Gordon Andrews write the BEST female characters and families you'll ever come across. Nevada is so strong and kickass but she still has a lot to learn about herself and her magic and I love getting to discover what she's capable of right alongside her. Her sisters and cousins get their chance to shine in this book and I'm really curious to find out more about all of their different magical abilities in the future. I also loved the addition of Cornelius to the main cast of characters, his animal sidekicks are wonderful and the ninja ferrets are utterly priceless.

White Hot has everything you could hope for: fun family banter, amazing chemistry between Nevada and Rogan, enemies who always seem to be one step ahead and who are willing to pull out all the stops to hurt our heroes. You'll be shocked one moment and swooning the next only to be watching in terror seconds later as you worry that all your favourite characters might not survive their latest adventure. One thing I guarantee is that you'll want to go back to the first page and start all over again the minute you finish it. I've already read it FIVE times and it's not even been published yet! I think it's safe to say that I'm addicted to this series, Ilona and Gordon were already my favourite authors but this series takes them to a whole new level and my obsession knows no bounds.

I'll leave you with a couple of my favourite quotes just to whet your appetite further:

A tall man was striding from the far end of the hallway. He wore the black robe and it flared around him, the wings of a raven about to take flight. He walked like he owned the building and he'd spotted an intruder in his domain. Magic boiled around him, vicious and lethal, so potent I could feel it from 30 yards away. He wasn't a man, he was an elemental force, a thunderstorm clad in black about to unleash its fury.

and

I finally understood why he was called Mad Rogan. It wasn't because he was insane. It was because he drove you nuts with sheer frustration.

Before reading

OMG OMG OMG OMG I HAVE WHITE HOT!!!!! It's on Edelweiss peeps, go and request it now!

I am crazy excited about this one and can't bloody wait to start it but I have a review copy of the new Innkeeper book to read first then I need to reread Burn For Me again (and no I don't care that I only read it a month ago!) but after that White Hot is going straight to the top of my TBR pile. I'm going to be in Ilona Andrews HEAVEN this weekend but I pity any books I try to read after this bunch of awesomeness LOL. I suspect a reading slump will be hitting next week!

___________________________

1st read

It's not often a book comes along that is so amazing that the minute you finish it you find yourself having to reread the entire series again. Considering I've literally just binge read Burn for Me and White hot in the last 2 days the fact that I already started Burn for Me AGAIN says it all really!

___________________________

2nd Read

No that's not a typo, I really did read both this book AND Burn For Me twice each in about 5 days LOL. That's how much I love this series - I am totally addicted and Rogan IS MINE!!

It's far too early to write a full review so I'll post more nearer to the release date but I'm fully expecting to have read it at least another 5 times by next May LOL

___________________________

3rd & 4th Read

I think I should give up on commenting after every read of this one - I did it again and read it twice in a week for the second time LOL. I can't help myself I'm just totally addicted to Rogan!

Yaaaa.

I want this so bad.

If anyone had told me a few years ago, before I really discovered urban fantasy as a genre, that I could LOVE a book with a cover like the ones you find on this book and in fact the whole series, I would have laughed in your face. Judging books by their covers? Yep. Well please don't let the covers on this series put you off. These books are amazing!
Nevada and Rogan are such fantastic characters. The romance is perfectly done, the magic of the world is great, the action fast paced, the plot so well thought out....how many superlatives can I get in one review?! I'm not going to say anything about the content because I think every reader needs to just enjoy it for themselves. But I will just say that Nevada's sister, Catalina, has an amazing and perfect magical gift!
And the book is laugh out loud funny in so many places. I just don't know how urban fantasy could get any better than this.
When I read anything by Ilona Andrews, (the couple of Ilona and Gordon), I always think they must be a great couple themselves: that there really must be something in the working together on their books, that makes the plots, characters, magic so good. They can be chatting out the plot gaps over the washing up or while taking the dogs for a walk. I think they must have a great relationship and family themselves to be able to write about them so well. I don't care if it's pure projection (don't anyone tell me if it's otherwise!) and I think that's pretty romantic in its own right.
Recommended.

Let's face it, if the team of Ilona Andrews writes it, I'm going to read it. Everything that this husband and wife team has produced has been everything an avid reader, such as myself, would love to find in every book they pick up. 5th read (don't judge! XD) - Spoiler-free review

This is a book I'll be definitely re-reading every time I need to go back to a comfortable, soothing, familiar place.

I honestly have no words to describe just how much I love Ilona Andrews' simple writing and colorful characters. Coming back to any world they created always felt close to coming back home and meeting with old and beloved friends. White Hot was no exception.

Okay, let's take a second to properly loathe and virtually burn the trashy cover that doesn't do the book any justice. Quite the opposite actually... There!

The story takes place 2 months after the last events of Burn for Me and Nevada accepts to investigate a murder case. Soon enough, she gets entangled in Houses' conflicts and a machination bigger than her abilities and ressources and powerful allies will be needed. I found the plot to be much more compelling and immersive as the investigation got more personal and dangerous. I was never bored. Not a single page. Not a single paragraph. I kept turning the pages while apprehensively checking the exponentially increasing reading progress on my Kindle.

This wasn’t the world of normal people. Yet somehow I kept getting stuck in it.
“For the record, I don’t consent to being killed,” I said.

I absolutely loved the way day-to-day actions mixed with frenetic high-speed car chases, thrilling fusillades and battles with arcane creatures, against a backdrop of shady ideologies and Houses politics. Once again, I'm baffled at the amount of research the Andrews made on fire arms, cars, tanks and military. As a result, reading White Hot felt more like watching an action movie than reading a Fantasy book.

Nevada's development was pretty awesome and her struggle to maintain a balance between her duties, believes, desires and self-assertion felt incredibly real and easily relatable. I loved Nevada! I loved her hilarious family and their constant banter and meddling in her love life. I loved knowing more about Rogan and his complicated past and twisted logic. But if I'm being completely honest, the highlight of this book was the romance for me. No, I'm not blushing... Let's just say that it was very intense, swoon-worthy and caliente and we'll leave it at that...

PERFECTION!!!!!! I’M OBSESSED!!!!!!

So, when I started shouting from the rooftops about how much I loved Burn for Me and was now in love with this series, SO many people told me that this second book was the best one. I was like, how could it possibly be better than the first one??? But, guys. IT IS!!!! It just really gives you everything you were left craving in the last book.

I'm not going to delve into the plot too deeply because it's so intricate and complex, and I would just be butchering it. But, basically, a somewhat minor character introduced in Burn for Me loses their spouse to a tragic – well, no good way of saying it – MASS MURDER, and asks Nevada for help in finding the perpetrator.

Even though it's bound to be a dangerous job, and on the heels of the traumatic stuff that happened in book one, Nevada finds herself touched by the way no one else seems to care about the people who were killed, and decides to help uncover what actually happened.

Obviously, my all time favorite psychopath and super-powerful billionaire, Mad Rogan, gets tangled up in the chaos and once again forces his way into Nevada's investigation (and in aaall her fantasies, of course. And mine!).

Did I mention Rogan is completely into Nevada now and wants her more than anything? 'Cause, yeah, that's the situation.

While the adventure and the mystery are gripping, the romance is everything you could possibly want. You're probably wondering right now, "Does she become the one person who calls him by his first name, though? Because that's a deal breaker." And the answer is: OBVIOUSLY! Illona Andrews is not an amateur, come on.

With the entire Baylor family under threat, new revelations about her magic and her background, and a gorgeous, murdering Prime camping in her house to keep her safe, Nevada goes through quite the journey in this book, and I loved every single second.

There are so many mysteries left to uncover, though! The book ended with a huge plot twist and I can't wait to find out what happens next.

I spent about 15 hours driving over the last couple weeks and I listened to this book. The narrator is fantastic - she also does Ilona Andrews' The Edge series as well (not sure about Kate Daniels). This is a great follow up to the previous book, but there were a couple times when I wanted to yell at Nevada for being a bit too stubborn - one of the things I dislike about most urban fantasy are the chip-on-the-shoulder protagonists, while strong, independent and skilled in self-defense/fighting, they can be so stubborn - it's very annoying to me! Yes, they have good reasons not to trust and have built walls, etc... but there are a few writers out there that have the perfect balance - Ilona Andrews (yes, I know I yelled, but it was once or twice, not every other page!) and Patrica Brigg's Mercy Thompson series.

Re-read December 2019.

Yap, this makes me feel all warm and cozy. The breathtaking action is the spice on top, but it‘s about the characters and their relationships / interactions for me. The intense bits as much as the funny ones. All of it. Sooooo good. *purrs*

———————————————————————
I'm in love!

This second volume starts action-packed and thrilling with the continuation of the conspiracy we learned about in the first volume. Nevada discovers the true extend of her powers - but, unfortunately, so do others. Connor has kept his distance, which leaves her with mixed feelings. But as grandma Frida put it, fate is throwing them back together (literally *lol*). It does so in the shape of a new case which, no spoiler there, is connected to the conspiracy.
So we have a learning Nevada that has to plunge into dark places (physically and mentally) to grow into her role; we have a chivalrous Rogan as intense as ever, who is trying his best to do what he considers best for Nevada; we have a compelling old-ish character that gets a bigger role here (though, at first, in a sad way); we get to know more about the single family members of Nevada; and we learn more about the conspiracy and its players. We also get to know more about Nevada's legacy and some "family" we hadn't known about (much) so far.

I like that Nevada and even Rogan show us that being just or fair or having principles doesn't mean you can't be hard and face your enemies with force. OK, Rogan might exaggerate from time to time *sniggers* but he's proof that even a tortured soul full of strength and a black-or-white view can be a good guy.
Grandma Frida was not as prominent in this one as in the first, which definitely impeded the humour, but we got more Connor and more Connor-with-Nevada which more than made up for it. *thinks of chapter 14 especially and starts purring* Besides, thanks to several other people, not least of all Augustine, there is still more than enough humour in this.
The further look into this society's rules (not only in Houston but throughout the US and even beyond) was something I very much enjoyed as well - not that the Houses are nice or anything, but the authors are just so good with world-building.

Now I'm in a conundrum: I flew through the first two books and therefore have to wait "a long time" for the 3rd (and later even longer for the 4th)!!! *wails*

It is time yet again not to judge these books by their covers! (God these covers are so bad). Another excellent PNR/urban fantasy book from the writing duo Ilona Andrews.

I'm going to keep it short and say while this book started off slow, it gained speed and by the end I was riveted. This is an unforgettable series with characters that will stick in your mind for a long time to come. I'm glad I waited to pick up this series so I am able to binge it now and not have to wait for my next fix.

Seriously y'all, you need to pick up Ilona Andrews if you haven't yet.
