Raw, brazen and totally intense, Fucked Up + Photocopied is a collection of frenetic flyers produced for the American punk scene between 1977 and 1985. Many were created by the musicians themselves and demonstrate the emphasis within the punk scene on individuality and the manic urge of its members to create things new. Images were compiled out of whatever material could be found, often photocopied and, still warm, stapled to the nearest telephone pole to warn the world about next week’s gig. One glance and you can sense the fury of live performances by bands such as Black Flag, the Dead Kennedys and The Minutemen, and, through the subtext the reader is exposed to the psyche of a generation of musicians stripped The Germs, J.F.A, NOFX, X, The Circle Jerks, Devo, The Exploited, The Screamers, The Cramps, The Dils, The Avengers and more.
Beautiful, high-quality images of punk rock flyers make up the bulk of this large paperback. Hardcover would have been better. The heavy, glossy pages are already pulling apart the spine after my first read. Mostly from a West Coast point of view, bands like Dead Kennedys, The Avengers, Black Flag get their own well-deserved pages with remembrances from band members, scenesters like Brendan Mullen, etc. The final quarter or so is other scenes: Boston, The Midwest, Canada, etc.
Another beautiful find in my library. Lovely collection of punk memorabilia. posters, ticket stubs and photographs. Not much to read beyond the odd anecdote and paragraph, but still a fantastic collection to look at. A must for any punk fan.
Gorgeous in hardcover, great variety. Glad I coughed up the money. Only worth it for art and design fans or people who still have flyers perfectly preserved from shows they went to half a lifetime ago. You know who you are.
This book has so much variety when it comes to showing artisty & emotion from the punk rock movement. It features advertisments, typography, and exposes on bands like the Dead Kennedys and NOFX! Visual read with plenty of great information on all things true punk.
Not much to "read" here, but a great visual history of punk rock flyers. I appreciated how it was split up into regional chapters. Checked this out from the library, but would definitely consider buying it.
This was on my list to read but I'm not sure how it made it on the list. I love punk but this book is basically a collection of flyers from various punk shows over the years.
visually some quite interesting images.many recognizable styles that have found themselves into current print adds, websites, and tshirts. influential and important.
