"When I met Oliver Perry, I had no clue he was the lead singer for The Heartbreakers. And he had no idea that I was the only girl in the world who hated his music."

Stella will do anything for her sick sister, Cara—even stand in line for an autographed Heartbreakers CD...for four hours. She's totally winning best birthday gift this year. At least she met a cute boy with soft brown hair and gorgeous blue eyes while getting her caffeine fix. Too bad she'll never see him again.

Except, Stella's life has suddenly turned into a cheesy love song. Because Starbucks Boy is Oliver Perry – lead singer for the Heartbreakers. And even after she calls his music crap, Oliver still gives Stella his phone number. And whispers quotes from her favorite Disney movie in her ear. OMG, what is her life?

But how can Stella even think about being with Oliver — dating and laughing and pulling pranks with the band — when her sister could be dying of cancer?

Instead of torturing myself further, I finally decided to give up on this book the second I finished the 103rd page. I'm surprised I made it that far, and I definitely have no regrets.

Within those miserable--okay, maybe I'm exaggerating, but I did NOT enjoy anything I read AT ALL--103 pages, I managed to:

a.) encounter an elitist heroine whose hair I wanted to pull off so badly.

Stella was a bitch, really. I mean, who the heck tells someone that their music is crap? I'm all for being opinionated, but that's just straight-up asshole bahavior. And she lashed out on all the boy band members before she really got to know them, only because she hated their music, which is pretty snobby. And rude.

b.) mentally puke because of the extreme insta-love. I'm not even joking here when I tell you that Stella and Oliver kissed within hours of meeting each other. That's after she went all your-music-is-horrible-and-I-don't-get-the-hype on him just a few hours earlier. Nice, girl. Nice.

c.) make my eye twitch because of the characters' immaturity levels. Let's take note that these characters are probably around the age of seventeen, and while food fights are fun, we still do have to consider the fact that they are popular celebrities and realistically, should act more maturely. Ketchup eating contests? Really? Throwing food at each other? (Okay, that last one does sound kind of fun.)

d.) want to poke my eyeballs out because of the supposed "humor" in this book. The humor was so dry, bland, and mostly just trying too hard. If anything, I was laughing because of how idiotic the whole book was turning out to be.

e.) cry in frustration because of the completely unrealistic plot. Come on, HOW CAN YOU NOT RECOGNIZE A VERY POPULAR CELEBRITY WHEN YOU MEET ONE? Okay, fine, that's actually possible, but the heroine goes out of her way every few sentences to mention that she HATES the guy's music, and her sister collects magazines with his face on it, and yet she doesn't recognize him. That just proves point A, right?

This book could've gotten a better rating from me if I hadn't just read a Miranda Kinneally book which is pretty much the same with the plot of this book. I don't like comparing books, I have said it before, but I can't help it because Jesse's Girl is still fresh in my mind and like I mentioned above, it sorta has the same plot with TH.

The Heartbreakers was so unmemorable that I even wondered why was I reading it in the first place. It was.... uneventful and dull. At least, for me, Its not that the book is like, BAD BAD. But it was MEH. It was not even OKAY... it was MEH. Ali Novaks writing evidently improved. (Yes, I was a fan of her stories when she was still in Wattpad.) And she's one of the writers who I really think is deserving to be published.

I can't lie that the whole plot of The Heartbreakers appeals to YA romance readers. But all of the excitement I felt before reading The Heartbreakers vanished the moment I met the love interest, Oliver Perry. He was such a flop! He can't even squeeze a drop of swoon out of me. He puts me to sleep.

At least Stella, our main character, was bearable. She even made me laugh. That goes with the supporting characters as well such as the remaining boys in the band. I wish Novak worked more on Oliver Perry, like idk, change his whole personality??? I can't point the exact thing that makes Perry a disappointment and that's what frustrates me.

I have nothing more to say but this: The Heartbreakers isn't the best YA Contemporary out there, but its definitely not the worst either.

Not all that glitters is gold. Not all the norms of the book that you were given for review. This is where I got hurt. But the book was given to me for review, so I suffered until the last dot.

All the characters are flat, and the main one is also a terrible Mary Sue. But we have only her POV and must bear with her voice for 300+ pages.

The story itself is very similar to fanfiction. Exactly the same works I read on boy band forums when I was fourteen. A sea of blah-blah and empty dialogues; lack of logical links between chapters; speculation on a serious topic (here it's cancer) for the sake of romance; complete ignorance of celebrity backstage life (I think the whole story was based on Hollywood films about relationships with stars and TV shows about it); and uninteresting plot...

What can I say? Only I don't recommend this.

“The world moves fast, changing everything around us with each new day. Photography is a gift that can keep us in a moment forever, blissfully eternal.”

The Heartbreakers was a book I wanted to love. I'm pretty sure I had originally read the first few chapters on Wattpad when it was first being written and enjoyed it. Though I'm finding the more experienced I get as a reader the less I enjoy books I originally loved. Now, this is not to hate on the authors writing style or anything. I don't want to sound unsupportive because publishing not one but two is amazing and I support the author completely. But, as a fair warning, I may be ripping apart the part of the book I did read.

Now, The Heartbreakers wasn't a book I had high hopes for. I have no idea how the paperback came into my possession but as I was packing I found it and went "sure, let's go". Now, I probably should have put it back on my shelf as I didn't read the blurb at all. My friend alerted me quickly to the fact that the blurb read like it was a fanfiction. If I remember correctly as well the author did use a photo of Harry Styles as a representation for the male lead.

I'm not a person to insult fanfiction, but I can pick a cheesy one almost instantly. I, myself, used to write fanfiction (which has been deleted from the Internet). This book was one of the cheesiest probable fanfics I have ever read. I have never cringed so hard while reading a book. I had to stop quite frequently because I just couldn't handle how absolutely cheesy the story was. I love myself a good cheesy book but this took it too far.

Characters

Stella is our female protagonist. She is a triplet, close to both her siblings. To the point where this quote seems necessary:

“Cara and I were scary similar in so many ways. We both could quote every line from every episode of Friends like we had written and produced the show ourselves. We hated peanut butter because of the way it made your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth, and neither of us had ever had a boyfriend.”

I don't know if I was meant to like Stella at all. I hated her. I found her judgmental, rash and just overall rude. Sure, people may find it cute that she yelled at the boy band, The Heartbreakers, in the elevator, but, in fact, it was just straight up rude. I didn't like her before that either. Stella was a music snob, photography snob and overall snob. When her sister is talking about The Heartbreakers she goes on a tangent about how they're not punk rock like they say they are - which honestly reminded me of 5 Seconds of Summer (which I feel I can say as an ex-fan).

“I pressed my lips together to keep myself from laughing. “Just because they site the Misfits and the Ramones as their inspiration doesn’t make them punk.”

Sure, everything in Stella's life wasn't great. But, she had every opportunity to the point it was infuriating. Her sister may have cancer, but she got into the college she wanted, had a knack for photography to the point The Heartbreakers publicist called her to run a blog during the tour, and I presume her family was well off. I just felt like despite the fact that Stella's family was impacted by the possibility of her sister's death she did not take a single opportunity offered to her without complaining about it.

Oliver was another character I hated. I have no quotes for Oliver. I just didn't like this supposed beautiful boy who was too much Harry Styles for me. I don't have much to say about him apart from the fact he made me cringe the most with his bipolar moods, 'flirting' and lack of absolute charm. He wasn't flattering and I would have punched him in the nose at least six times the day Stella and Oliver hung out.

I don't even remember his band members name, and, in fact, I wrote Owen at least 8 times before having to correct it to Oliver because he was so insignificant. Also, his name was Oliver Perry. Never trust someone with two first names.

Plot

The plot was non-existent. I can't tell you what was going to happen because I don't know myself. Did Cara die? Did Stella go on tour? Did Stella finally get her first boyfriend, like, oh em gee?

Absolutely nothing happened, it was boring and repetitive in the way that Stella was negative about everything and constantly deciding about things. I also hated how fast she was 'charmed' by Oliver, it wasn't believable in any way. Much like the friendship that was instantly had between Stella's brother, Stella and The Heartbreakers. I found myself irritated as everyone interacted, it was as if the author didn't understand friendships aren't formed the way they were.

Writing

The writing was the worst. It was cheesy, underdeveloped and Stella had the voice of a 12-year-old and not an 18-year-old I found myself disbelieving some of the stuff that was said by her, not believing an 18-year-old would never be seen saying.

Overall

Overall, basically a One Direction fanfiction. I would recommend this if you would like a better-written fanfiction that you can physically hold in your hands. Otherwise, I may recommend just to stay clear of this book.

My opinion is just that, my opinion. I mean no offence by my opinion. I simply did not enjoy this book. It may have gotten better, but I was not feeling it at all.

'The Heartbreakers' reminded me of the times when all i could do was obsess over boybands and imagine what my life would have been if i knew them. It was really cute, a bit predictable, but still worthy. It didn't fail to make me smile not even once. I really enjoyed it.

This would've been better without the sexist/perverted boy joke being played every other chapter. The love story was super cute tho. Oliver was obnoxious for a while but I loved Stella and her passion for photography! I'm also always a sucker for famous person / normal person romances so that element was great.
Read this in almost a single sitting WHOOPS.

If you want to read a book that will make you stupider for having read it, you, my dear friend, have stumbled upon the find of your lifetime. Not only is The Heartbreakers a brain cell killer, it will also annihilate your chances of ever wanting pick up a Young Adult Contemporary after it, so beware.

Let me tell you a little something about this book: DONT READ IT. No, seriously. Reading a review about it and laughing at the sheer stupidity that is this book is one thing, but putting yourself through the trouble of reading it is a completely different thing. So. Don’t bother with this book. You know you have work/homework/baby-making/chores/whatever to do. Do it. Don’t waste your time.

If you’re still here, it either means a) you still have hope or b) you’ve take me for a complete shit and want me to justify myself. I’ll do it happily.

The Heartbreakers are a fictional American boy band who are—obviously—the life and soul of teenage girls worldwide. Their formulaic bubble pop and their pretty faces makes them every girl’s (proverbial) wet dream. Cara, suffers from cancer, and is probably one of their greatest fans. But since she is unable to attend their concert, and as a part of her birthday surprise, her twins Stella and Drew decide to go get some signed merch for Cara.

Stella, the lead idiot of the book happens to stop at a Starbucks on her way to the signing and happens to meet Oliver Perry, lead singer. She doesn’t recognise him, however, and after a little harmless flirting, the two go their separate ways. And of course, because this book was nothing if not filled to the brim with clichés, Stella and Drew don’t get their merch signed because after standing for four hours in line, the band has to leave. Stella is pissed. AND SHE TAKES IT OUT ON THE BAND WHEN SHE MEETS THEM IN A HOTEL ELEVATOR. SHE CALLS THEM OUT ON THEIR MUSIC AND DOES IT IN THE MOST BITCHIEST WAY POSSIBLE.

“The only thing that’s crazy is that people actually listen to your music.” (ARC, location - 392)

One of the band members, after Stella’s rude, obnoxious tantrum, actually says this:

“I think I kind of like this girl. She’s got sass. Can we keep her?” (ARC, location - 397)

I mean, have you no self respect or have you no self respect?

I could go on and on ridiculing this sorry excuse of trash but here’s the rundown: A few minutes after the elevator debacle, Stella and Drew get invited to The Heartbreakers’ hotel room, goof off in the hotel pool, make besties with the band and Stella and Oliver kiss. Yes, they kiss within hours of having met for the first time.

Here’s a list of some fails in this book:

The most loved American boy band hiring an unprofessional, 17 year old girl as their official photographer. And the goodie part? Said photographer hatestheir music.
An insta-love type romance that fell flat on its face. Repeatedly.
Pointless pranks, ketchup eating competitions, hell, there was something with Silly String…?
“Humour” that just pained me to read. It felt forced and added nothing to the plot whatsoever.
It read suspiciously like One Direction/5 Seconds of Summer fan fiction. Opinions, anyone?
Obviously this has been picked up the way it was from Wattpad and then published. No editing, no making the book people-friendly, and absolutely no humanising the characters. Every single one of them belonged in the jungle, getting eaten by an animal.

I completely adored this novel, in that it was so bad and unrealistic and poorly written that it was enjoyable and I found myself laughing A LOT. Nothing was probable, clichés where in abundance and the “romance” was a joke. The book ended abruptly and it was my life’s greatest moment because I actually read all 336 pages and though I completely enjoyed this crap, it was time for it end.

If I’ve convinced even two readers not to read this book, then my life is a success. Believe me, you will lose all faith in humanity if you ever read this book.

Rhea out.

About: The Heartbreakers is a young adult fiction written by Ali Novak. It was published on 4/4/15 by Sourcebooks Fire, an imprint of Sourcebooks, 336 pages. The genres are fiction, young adult, contemporary, and romance. There are 2 books to The Heartbreak Chronicles series so far where book two, Paper Hearts will be published on 7/4/17.

My Experience: I started reading The Heartbreakers on 6/14/17 and finished it on 6/16/17. This book started out great! It had a great sense of humor. I laughed a lot and was unable to put it down. It kept me turning the pages for sure! This book also makes me cry because it discussed about a family member going through cancer and how it affected everyone else in the family. I had to skip that part because it’s just too sad to read.

“If you don’t constantly remind yourself about the good, the bad will seep in and take over.” 2%

In this book, readers will follow the point of view of Stella Samuel, a high school graduate who has a passion for photography. Being a triplet is cute when they always stand out. People like to gawk at them and ask them many twin questions. They have a good laugh when they joke to others that they can read each other’s mind and feel each other’s pain. Taking great pictures is what sets Stella apart from her brother Drew, a jock, and Cara, a cheerleader. When Cara has cancer, Stella puts her life on hold because the college she wanted to go is far away in New York. Cara is obsess with a boy band called The Heartbreakers when Stella and Drew don’t. Since Cara is sick, she worries that she will never get to attend The Heartbreakers’ concert. Drew and Stella decided to go on a road trip from Minnesota to Chicago to obtain The Heartbreakers’ autograph as a surprise gift for Cara. Since Stella is not a fan of The Heartbreakers, she doesn’t know how the boys look like, so when she runs into one of them at Starbucks for her morning coffee stop, she doesn’t realize who he is until she sees him again at the signing. The signing closed by the time she reaches to the front of the line. She runs into the band members again at the hotel, but since she’s in a foul mood, she gives them an earful. Little did Stella know, she will one day become The Heartbreakers’ biggest fan, though, she has to travel through a bumpy road to get there.

“But there’s no guarantee about anything in life. Sometimes you just have to take a chance.” 93%

I enjoyed the first half of the book a lot. I really like the humor in this book. The chicken fight is fun to read. I love the Cheetos ambush. It’s interesting to read about a famous band’s busy day to day tour schedule. I like Stella and her realistic thinking. She knows that photography can’t be made into a career and give herself a second route. I like Stella and her family. I like the boy band and their friendship. I like Oliver and his try at romance. I do still recommend everyone to read this book if you are looking for a book that will both make you laugh and cry!

Pro: family, humor, fast paced, easy to read, photography, friendship, finding oneself

Con: I skipped through the sadness because I don’t want to be sad

I rate it 4 stars!

This book is the epitome of every fangirl's dream. And it's fantastic!

description

If you've ever fantasized that you were the girl who could capture the attention of a famous heartthrob because you're different from all the other girls who throw themselves at him... Well, then... you're in for a super fun ride!

description

Stella, Cara and Drew are triplets who really love each other. Cara has cancer and is very sick. She totally loves The Heartbreakers, currently the most famous boyband in the world. Their 18th birthday is coming up and Drew has an idea for Cara's birthday present. Since she's too sick to attend their upcoming concert, Drew and Stella attend an autograph session that the boys are holding. Needing caffeine from Starbucks (and who doesn't?), she pops into one and meets Oliver, the lead singer of The Heartbreakers. Only, unlike her sister, she has no idea who he is and thinks their music sucks. They flirt briefly and life goes on. Until she and Drew are forced to wait for hours in an unending line of hysterical fangirls, Heartbreakers music blaring on repeat, in order to make Cara's birthday special.

As they finally get close enough to view the table, Stella is astonished to see "Starbucks Boy" sitting there, his gorgeous blue eyes graciously acknowledging his adoring fans. Just as it's their turn to step up to the front of the line, though, The Heartbreakers are whisked away by security, the autograph session over.

The air conditioning wasn't working in the hotel room in which Drew and Stella were staying the night. She was livid. The drive, the wait and, now, the heat—Stella was having a meltdown. She marched down to the lobby and demanded a new room, only to learn that there none available. Exasperated, she gets in the elevator, only to be joined by none other than the boys from the band. It's their fault that she's in such a foul mood and she doesn't mince words when she tells them so.

description

Of course, in YA fiction, Stella's rudeness is considered by the boys to be delightful because most girls would never yell at the objects of their fanatic affection. Cue unexpected romance... 😍

description

If you love stories like Geekerella, Follow Me Back, Kill the Boy Band, etc. ( and I do! ), you'll love The Heartbreakers! 💔

Listened to the audiobook of this while re-organizing my bookshelves and it was a perfect fit. I have to admit, I'm surprised by how not-terrible this was. I thought it was going to be super cheesy and stupid, but for what it was, it was pretty damn cute. Would I recommend it? Probably not. But I'm definitely not mad about it.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This is no way impacted in my view.

The Heartbreakers was definitely a cutesy YA contemporary read. Like most others, there were fun times, and also sad, angsty moments, which I think are characteristic of YA contemporary novels. In this book we meet Stella, a triplet, whose sister, Cara, has stage IV cancer. To try and deal with her own emotions through this ordeal, Stella turns to photography, which manages to change her life so much. She meets Oliver Perry, the lead singer of the band The Heartbreakers, and somehow becomes in charge of running the photo blog for the band's tour.

I really liked Stella's character. Though she was a triplet, all three of them had their own distinctive personality, and you could definitely see how much Stella cared for her siblings in the book. Her interactions with the other characters were really enjoyable too, especially with each of the 4 band members, as they all meant so,etching different to Stella. She really brought out the best in each of them, and the character developments of all were beautiful. The fact that Stella was able to overcome her guilt on leaving Cara to join the tour, and that she began looking to what she wanted for the future, was especially noteworthy, as I don't believe she could have done any of this at the beginning of the novel.

The romance was wonderful between Stella and Oliver. As I've already said, there were some angsty moments in the book, mainly to do with this romance, but all came out alright in the end. By the end of the book, Stella was like a fully fledged member of The Heartbreakers, and each band member cared for her just as much as she did for them - they were a proper family. Cara, Stella, and Drew were just what I'd imagine triplets would be like - all their own person, but would do just about anything for their sibling, as shown often in the book.

I've previously read Novak's other book, My Life with the Walter Boys, and this one was definitely my favourite of the two. I much preferred the setting and plot in The Heartbreakers, and I feel as if you can tell that this is a later book, as the writing has definitely become more developed and stronger.

Overall I enjoyed the plot of the story, though it was quite obvious what was going to happen next at times, and loved the characters. I'm quite looking forward to further books in this series.

This is one of the most unrealistic books I have ever in my life read. It is so improbable. There were some cute moments, but they were drowned out by the fact that these cute moments have about a 0.001% (I am going to be optimistic here) percent chance of happening.

First off, how Stella meets Oliver Perry twice within such a short span of time without actually trying is beyond me. I couldn't even find a celebrity if I tried. Let alone twice...and we won't even mention the fact that both times she was actually able to have a normal conversation with them. Well...I'm bending the definition of normal when it comes to their second conversation. On that note, let's get on to the second point.

WHO YELLS AT POPSTARS IN AN ELEVATOR JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE THEIR MUSIC?? Psychos. And snobs. Notice that I haven't listed 'girlfriend material' on this list. Because if this happens, GET AWAY FROM THE CRAZY PERSON. Don't date them.

OR LET THEM IN YOUR HOTEL ROOM MINUTES LATER!!! I swear, where is their sensibility? Actually, forget sensibility, where is their security? If the girl who had just gotten done yelling at you in an elevator came up to your hotel room and wanted to talk to you...would you let them in? Especially when you're famous and there is a possibility they are psycho?

And then they have a nice fun session in the pool and such. At this point I was beyond skeptical. It was at this time that I realized that the Heartbreakers are, in this literary world, the most laid back and stupid boy band to ever grace the music industry.

Stella...she is definitely a wattpad heroine. She's plain. She's boring, as a character, but there's like one redeeming feature about her that's supposed to make her 'different' from those other girls. (In this case, she likes photography. She doesn't sound all that great at it, so how she impresses everyone is beyond me.) Everyone always has to tell her how great she is because she, herself, has absolutely no clue. Stella was pretty awful to read about.

I actually liked Oliver in a way, though I still think he is a piss-poor example of what any normal pop star would do when presented with the series of events that happen in this book. He's nice, and troubled, but not in a creepy way, but in a 'I want to help you poor baby' way, and welllll....he's kind of hot.

The Heartbreakers should have ended with Stella being carried out by security. It should not have been a romance. I rest my case.

This was a cute story about Family, Health and Personal Growth.
Stella, Drew and Cara are triplets who are close and they feel helpless because Cara isn't winning her battle with non Hodgkin lymphoma.
When Cara's favorite boy band "The Heartbreakers" were in town, Stella and Drew decided to get her a signed poster from the band. Stella ended up meeting the lead Singer Oliver on her Starbucks run and they didn't know each other so they flirted with each other.

It started a romance between Stella and Oliver, it also helped Stella deal with her guilt about Cara's cancer and begin to make plans that didn't revolve around her sister's cancer.

I love that the focus was on family, personal growth, the effect of cancer on the remaining family, the guilt, the fear of not being around in case your sick family member needed you etc.
The romance was a sub plot and it was tastefully done. I really liked this story.

Full Review on The Candid Cover

If you are looking for an interesting, yet extremely quirky book to make you laugh this summer, The Heartbreakers is for you. The plot is a little far fetched but, I was able to see past this and enjoy the fun that this book has to offer. The Heartbreakers has everything: a boy band, Starbucks, a cancer story and a brave main character who is full of sass.

The Heartbreakers is a slightly unrealistic book, which is probably why I enjoyed it! The plot is so unbelievable that I just had to laugh. Honestly, what are the chances that a famous musician happens to be in a Starbucks when you walk in and also appears with his band in the elevator you are in? Once the story gets going though, the book becomes a little more believable. You really have to be the kind of person who doesn’t mind thinking beyond the fact that some of these occurrences are pretty rare to appreciate this book. I found the plot to be endearing, but I definitely see others having a hard time with the start of this story.

In The Heartbreakers, Stella (the main character)’s sister, Cara has cancer. When I first picked up the book, I expected it to focus on the cancer, making the book depressing to read. Cara, however, is such an optimistic character that is so refreshing to read about. As it turns out, the book isn’t really another cancer story. There are only a few chapters that mention it, but Cara is very relevant to the plot and causes some major plot twists.

Stella is such an enjoyable narrator for The Heartbreakers. She is clever, sassy, and very supportive of others, such as her sister. When she is hired to be a photographer for The Heartbreakers, she does her job efficiently and well. Stella does doubt herself a lot, though. While taking pictures, she often thinks her work isn’t up to the standards that it should be. As the story progresses, Stella slowly gains confidence and her personality really shines through.

If you enjoyed Aimee and the Heartthrob by Ophelia London, I recommend The Heartbreakers to you. It contains a similar “normal girl meets famous guy” plot. This is a fun, quick read that is perfect for a lazy summer day.

actual 4.5 stars.

I can't give this book more than 3 stars because it's too ordinary, fanfiction-like, but I really enjoyed it.
There is a time when I want to read something like this to remind me of the time when I loved reading various fanfictions. This book is good. But I will always consider it a fanfiction. It is just so similar and yet I really liked it.

Really, really adorable. I was not expecting this to be as emotional as it was. Definitely a cute contemporary worth picking up.
