Reunited lovers must outwit a ruthless government agent, or their rumored deaths will be real this time.

Kerzanna Nevarr's elite special forces days of wearing Jumper mech suits and piloting Citizen Protection Services' ships are long gone. The dark legacy of her service forced her to learn to live a quiet life. And she had to do so alone, without the lover who died before her eyes.

Jess Orowitz, veteran of CPS's secret spy organization, Kameleon Corps, made the mistake of trusting his superiors. He's paid a horrific price—fractured memories, constant headaches, and the death of the only woman he ever loved. Retirement on a quiet farming planet has kept him in an emotional deep freeze, but safe.

But now, Kerzanna is being hunted for reasons she can’t guess, and even more stunning, the man who helps her escape is Jess, her supposedly dead lover. For Jess, discovering Kerzanna is still alive is only the first of the lies and betrayal he uncovers.

Worst of all, their hunter is someone with CPS intel and lethal resources. Someone who believes the only obstacles standing in the way of success are one broken-down ex-Jumper and a fractured Kameleon.

Together, are they strong enough to escape death one more time?

If you like intrigue, psychics, and cyborgs, you'll love Carol Van Natta's thrilling entry in the Central Galactic Concordance space opera series.

I'm sorry about this excuse for review, but we're under Christams holidays and I'm waaayyy over my head with thing to do!!! So here it goes...

Better than #2, but not as good as n# 1!

I know that I've been reading out of order, but my ebook doesn't show which book is which number in the series... Maybe it does, but I'm an idiot using it... *blush*

Here we have a lot of action and very little romance, which was fine by me! I like action, what can I say? LOL

I liked both MCs. They're adult people who act like adults and that great!

I also liked that we were given the villains POV too! It was interesting even if he's really twisted! O_o

On tho read # 3 where I know I'll be meeting Luka and Mairwen! I love those two! :-)

They were both led to believe the person they loved most was dead, but now, in a strange twist of fate, they encounter right when their retired peaceful lives are crossed by danger. Or was it something more than fate... This series continues to amaze me with its lush futuristic worldbuilding, tight complex plots, captivating characters, riveting action, and fabulous audio narration work.

Jumper's Hope is book four in the Central Galactic Concordance series. At first, I would have said that this series can be jumped into anywhere, but, I've noticed a series plot that was subtle in the first few books and has gotten more urgent with each new book. Readers need to experience this and see how each book builds on the one before it even if new lead characters and new locations are introduced with each new book.

Jess Orowitz is retired from the CPS's secret service Kameleon Corp to own a farm and lead a quiet life away from it all. The alterations and enhancements they did to him over the years of service left him mentally disabled in a certain way. He has made adjustments so he can function well enough to get by. He is startled out of his contentedness when a crashed plane produces the astounding discovery that the woman he thought dead before his very eyes is the downed pilot in critical condition.

Kerzanna Nevarr is a retired CPS elite pilot and jumper who is retired because all the chems and enhancements the CPS used on her have resulted in the inevitable waster's disease. As long as she modulates her emotions and the stress on her system she can eke out a few more years before the disease takes her. She wakes up from a crash to learn her flyer was sabotaged to kill her and her medic is none other than her dead love, Jess.

Intrigue and questions, the danger they are in, and anger at the injustice done them force them out of retirement and on the trail of answers to who is trying to kill Kerzanna and why they were led to believe each other dead by their own organization. Not to mention, they now have unfinished- very- personal business.

I've enjoyed each book in this series so much they I would honestly be hard pressed to pick the outstanding favorite. Each has added something unique to the story so I enjoy them for different reasons. It is no different with Jess and Kerzanna's story. The abuse their bodies and minds underwent when they were military left me heartbroken for them especially since the system is broken and injustice runs rampant in the CPS and the government. This pair don't whine about the cost, but adjust to what their life is now. I was sad for their fate especially with Kerzanna's disease threatening to separate them again in a tragic way, but they were still a shining pair with plenty of slow-burn chemistry.

The book was loaded with twists, suspense, and action as they rushed on this final 'mission' with so much lined up against them. Each segment of this book presented such besetting danger that had them cornered and they work their way free and win to keep fighting. The biggest ongoing threat to them is one of the villains introduced in the last book and his group of 'pet' minders who are twisted in their own ways and utterly in his control. I loathe this man and kept hoping beyond hope that Jess and Kerzanna would find a way to stop his sadistic actions and his treachery..

This book wrapped up some of the main threads, but introduced a few more that left me desperate to know what comes next. Such far reaching ramifications for a certain prophecy that is becoming more focal with each books.

What a champ! Nicole Poole is an amazing voice actress and I am putty in her talented hands when she is reading these books. Voices, accents, pacing, and tone are impeccable.

In summary, I am left with the need for more of this series. I might even become desperate enough to go back to the beginning and re-read it all. Sci-fi and romantic suspense fans really shouldn't miss this series.

My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

I think this might be my favorite book in this series after Overload Flux or maybe it even is my favorite. Jumper's Hope was such a good read. I liked how this one followed two entirely new characters again, but tied the plot in with the previous books mainly through some CPS related plot lines and the same bad guy as the previous book. There is some action, space travel and also time spent on another planet. The two main characters are great and there are a bunch of side characters too.

This was a great fourth book to the series, the plot kept my attention throughout the whole book and I liked how this book had multiple different settings, but it all progressed in way that made sense. And there are some great twists and reveals. With how a character we only heard about makes an appearance and how her influence brings the characters together again and sets them on a new course. And I also liked the part at the end that takes place in Ridderth. I felt like a I got a good feel for this city.

It was interesting how this was the first book in the series were none of the main characters have any minder talent. Jess is an ex Kameleon with multiple personality overlays stuck in his head. It was interesting how that aspect got handled. And Kerzanna was an ex jumper, a military divisions form the CPS. She ahs soem cybernetic implants left over and a disease that's slowly killing her. It also was great how they both had worked for the CPS and now years later they realized the CPS definitely didn't have their best interest at heart. I liked how they met each other again in this book and found their way together again.

I really liked Jess and Kerzsanna, they both have been through a lot and believe the other is dead. They had some past together and the others dead hit them hard. Now they finally have found a bit of peace when their lives are shaken up again and they discover the other is still alive. They get ensnared in some difficulties with someone who wants Kerzanna dead and somehow they land in even bigger troubles.

The romance was a bit of a slow burn. Even tough they find out they other is alive, they don't just pick up where they left off, but slowly come to rely again on each other and only toward the end they finally get together again. I really liked them and their romance. They took some time to get over their shock and figure out some things that went wrong the last time, but I like how well these two understood each other and had each others back. There is a part where they can't be too close and that really illustrates how much they care about each other and how difficult being apart is for them. I also liked the scenes were they confided into the other something about their past.

I also really liked Tuzan, with the way he got described and how he acted I found him a very likeable and quirky character. And I hope the author decides to give him his own book or novella and gives him a boyfriend as he really could use someone to stand by his side. I also liked how he fought for the minders and he was a minder himself and experienced the loneliness that came from it. At the least I am pretty sure he'll make an appearance again in the next book as he seems to have an important role. And I am sure we haven't seen the last of Jess and Kerzanna either.

There are also two other side characters that I think will have an important role going forward and I am so curious to see how that plays out. One of the last chapters makes me really curious about the role they're going to play going forward.

The book is told mostly from dual point of views of Jess and Kerzanna, but there are also some chapters form the bad guys and his employees their point of views, which added some insights. And some chapters from other characters, which was handy and could add some information the main characters weren't aware of. While this book could be read as a standalone, I wouldn't advise you to do that as the plot is much stronger if you read the books in order.

This book is so important in terms of plot and world building, we not only learn even more about the CPS and their secret project, but also about Ayorinn's Legacy. We finally get to know more about this legacy and get a feel for what it means. I feel like what they do here and are going to do is going to be an important part of this series. I also liked how through Kerzanna, Jess and Dixon we learn more about the jumper's corps and the secret projects of the CPS.

To summarize: this was such a good book. I think it's my favorite book in this series after Overload Flux. There is so much that happens and so many events that feel important, pieces that fall on it's place and reveals and events that feel very important. I really liked Jess and Kerzanna, they both have been through a lot and believe the other is dead. It's quite the shock when they discover that isn't true. They get ensnared in some bigger issues. It was fun to have parts take place aboard a space ship and on two different planets. I also was quite fond of Tuzan and really hope we get to see more of him. It's an important book in terms of story and world building and I can't wait to see how the series continues after this. This continues to be an amazing series and every book manages to grab my complete attention again. I am a bit sad I am now caught up and have to wait for the next book to release.

Audiobook and re-read review
I love this series! Really I can't say enough good things about it. After listening to the audiobook version of Jumper's Hope I decided to up my rating to a 5 stars as this is one of my favorite books in this series. Kerzanna and Jess their journey is so amazing to follow and they have go through quite some hardships to get what they want.

Kerzanna and Jess both think the other is death, until at the start of this book they meet again and discover that the other isn't dead. I love reading about these characters, the way the author makes the character so realistic and likable. I also found it interesting how Kerzanna used to be a jumper and Jess a chameleon, which adds an interesting perspective. And Kerzanna and Jess are just so good together.

The big story lines is really starting to shine through in this book and this book feels so important for the series as a whole and I can't wait for book 5! I also liked that now that I know how this book ends and who the main character of book 5 will be I can see the build-up for that throughout this book.

The narration for this series is amazing. Nicole Poole handles the narration for this series so well and this book again shows her skill. I liked how she varies the accent and tone for Jess when his overlays were out.

To summarize: I cna't recommend this series enough whether in audio or e-format. I like the main characters and the romance. Kerzanna and Jess are so fun to read about and they are so good together. I also liked seeing the bigger storyline plot shine through more in this book. I am glad I re-read these in audiobook format as I love hearing these stories come alive this way and being all caught up now for when book 5 releases.

I’ve really enjoyed the Central Galactic Concordance series so far, so I was thrilled to read another book in this great series. Both Kerzanna Nevarr and Jess Orowitz believed the other had died due to the actions of the CPS which implanted false memories for both of them. When Kerzanna crashes in the flitter she’s piloting and Jess comes to her rescue, they discover their memories are a lie and they have another chance to be with each other. Now Kerzanna is being hunted for some unknown reason and she doesn’t want to put Jess at risk of dying for real this time. He’ll do anything to be with the woman he loves, including using all of his skills to keep them one step ahead of the people trying to kill her. They make a great team, this broken down ex-jumper who’s days are numbered due to waster’s disease, and the ex-spy with multiple personalities all fighting for room in his head. I really enjoyed this action packed adventure, and the two main characters were so likeable and deserving of happiness that I couldn’t wait to see how everything would work out for them. I especially liked the action on the ship, including Jess’s interaction with the two cats - the mark of a good person in my eyes is caring for animals who can’t take care of themselves. I certainly look forward to more stories in this series, I can’t wait to read more.

Light romance, strong SF

The universe is well designed and complex. Strong characters, strong locations, good plot movement.

Only difficulty is that there are some concepts that are not well defined. Maybe a glossary of terms at the end would help to fill in some details.

Definitely buying the next novel as soon as it is available.

I really wanted to enjoy this book as I still think the series has promise, but....I just couldn't get into it. There were yet another two new characters, which would be ok if you could empathize with them, or if they were interesting. Kerzanna is a retired jumper (can't remember what those are, there are too many special powers in this universe and I don't remember/can't keep track of them all) She seems to be dying of some disease that kills all jumpers, and her lover died. But her lover is alive and he though she died. His name is Jess and he was in the Kameleon coprs, which means there are sentences where we hear what Jess the medic versus Jess the sniper versus Jess the Mario Kart champion would do. I'm being a little facetious but it was too hard to keep track, and I just didn't want to put forth the effort to read any further.

Liked the start, dragged a bit in the middle. We also spent too much time spent on the bad guys POV which reduced time spent with Kerzanna & Jess to the point that I was never really invested in them. Didnt dislike them just felt like didnt know them. I was also a bit confused by reference to things like Mabington Purge and Ayorrin legacy that were never explained. It is just assumed you will know what they are. They may be explained in earlier books but i dont remember so a precis wouldn't have hurt. Suspected Renner & reporter would be next books couple as soon as he was watching her for the kill order but am looking fwd to that story (& hoping for a Luka & Mairwen cameo)

Action filled

This fourth entry into the CGC series is a thrill-a-minute tale of corrupt government henchmen (some of whom are victims themselves) hunting for a brave couple fleeing with vital information that will rock the status quo. Likable heroes vs some interesting villains combined with tons of action make this an intense and entertaining story. Can't wait for the next book in the series!

Van Natta keeps building the world with each book and while I might not remember everything from all the others, I still enjoy it. These characters are unique but I didn't buy the whole love story because it didn't seem fully fleshed out unless there was some backstory in the other books I missed. Not sure there is a next one in the series so I might not get a conclusion I'm looking for but it's been a fun ride.

Great next story

There are four books and a novella in this series, and I really enjoyed all of them. Jumper's Hope is one of adventure with great and characters, who have a depth more than just banding together. The story is written well, more like excellent, and Van Natta shows the audience a good story. It's action packed and the pace is perfect for this story. I enjoyed this, indeed.

Of the four books in this series I've read so far, I like this one the best after the first book. The second book was good but a bit boring. The third book was exciting but limited in scope. This one definitely had all the good stuff. I look forward to more books in this series.

There's hope for humanity.

Maybe, but as long as people don't give up in the future and keep trying to do what is right, then perhaps we will make it. Great characters and interesting plot.

I would call the Central Galactic Concordance series hard scifi with a strong romantic element. I doubt my definition of ‘hard’ scifi agrees with everyone, or anyone. But the elements of futuristic, highly developed worlds, developing worlds, humans scattered ‘out there’, technology (including space travel) that has not been invented except in an author’s mind, and complex social and political structures that support all the above play into my definition. There are many scifi romance authors that incorporate some or all of the elements I mentioned, but few build their universes so completely and effectively as Carol Van Natta has in her Central Galactic Concordance series.

Carol’s addition to her universe is the group of people known as Minders. Those that have special, though not unique psychic abilities. Abilities used for good. Abilities used for evil.

It is the good and evil uses of these abilities that form the stories in this series.

Jumper’s Hope brings back the ultimate evil, Dixon Davidro, that made me shiver when I read Pico’s Crush. To say that Davidro is a bad guy is putting it mildly. He is power-hungry and will use all the despicable, horrible means he can to achieve his goals.

Kerzanna and Jess may be obstacles to those goals. You can see where this is going. There is a showdown coming.

But there will be a lot of events before that showdown. One of Davidro’s former ‘pets’, Nevarr, initiates a series of those events that will have Kerzanna and Jess on the run, on the chase and everything in-between.

Action, intrigue, and, of course, romance. Kerzanna and Jess met many years ago. That is when the romance began. But each thought the other was dead. Their reunion is complicated by threats on Kerzanna’s life and a need to find a safe place to run to. The fact that this couple didn’t just meet means that the romance between them is anything but typical. I enjoyed watching them get reacquainted as well as learning so many new things about each other. These are two very different people. At first I wasn’t even sure they belonged together. (It’s a romance though – they do belong together.)

Here are a few more few things that raise my opinion of this book to 5 stars:
1.Kerzanna is a retired jumper with a body that is slowly deteriorating. I appreciate mature characters and I can sympathize with the body aches. Not because I was a jumper, but anyone of a certain age understands what I am talking about. Beats those heroine’s that are perfectly formed 20-somethings with no real life experience.
2.There are descriptions of the ship that Kerzanna and Jess travelled on. It seemed so real. Is Ms. Van Natta a rocket scientist? Okay, I really have no clue about what space ships should be like, despite my years of watching Star Trek, but I was so convinced.
3.Jess, in addition to being a Kameleon, is a hacker extraordinaire – this talent comes in really handy many times over. Actually I was so amazed at his talent that I thought it was a little over the top, but at the same time, I was glad Kerzanna and Jess had the hacker talent as a resource.
4.Evil Davidro. Yes, he creeps me out. But the juxtaposition of someone so evil against the rest of the universe makes me appreciate the rest of the universe. We don’t all have to be saints!
5.The Ayorinn prophecy. This prophecy has been mentioned in previous books in this series, but never so much. Jumper’s Hope advances the Ayorinn prophecy angle. We learn a bit more about it, but not really enough.
6.Cats, two of them. They are traveling companions on the space ship I previously mentioned. Any scifi story is enhanced by cats. Am I right?

Jumper’s Hope is top-notch scifi adventure and romance. Plenty of intriguing story lines carried about by fascinating, complex characters. I definitely recommend Jumper’s Hope!

If you are new to the Central Galactic Concordance, I recommend reading the earlier books in the series, in order. Another recommendation: the author’s website with detailed information on Minders and the Central Galactic Concordance Civilization.

The author provided a copy of her book so I could bring you this review.

Retired pilot Kerzanna crashes on the planet Jess has retired to. It’s no simple accident—someone wants her dead. Jess finds and rescues her, to both their confusion, as they were each convinced the other died several years ago. The two try to lay low and make their escape, but somebody has a tempting offer for them that could give them a chance of a future together. All they need to do is deliver some information. Easier said than done when the baddies are still after Kerzanna.

Kerzanna is one of the most interesting cyborgs I’ve read about in SFR. Cybernetics aren’t all sunshine and roses while we still have flesh. Like prosthetics now, they cause stress on other systems and need constant tweaking. I like how the CPS deactivated some of her capabilities and there was a side market for restoring them, it felt very punk. Kerzanna and Jess are mature adults who use their experience wisely during the course of the story. Though he’s retired, he has problems due to some mismanagement by his workplace. There’s a bit of upside to that oversight, but of course there is also a price for taking advantage of that. It makes me think hard about how organizations treat their employees.
The villainous troupe is entertaining. Davidro is an easy fellow to understand, and watching the way he tries to handle his underlings keeps making me snicker. I felt sympathy for Vahan, who may be cold-blooded and callous, but has to deal with a difficult job. Renner the electric talent has gotten more interesting through the series, and Georgie the forecaster and the others are memorable. Those who slip Davidro’s leash still have parts to play, even if they pay vividly terrible prices.
There’s a battle in space, and it’s exciting. Keeping track of the minor characters involved there is easy. Van Natta is good at making them distinctive and choosing interesting names.

I had a lot of trouble visualizing the layout of the passenger-freighter ship. That could just be my own spatial reasoning problems. What’s a nav pod, and why can it do what it does in the story?
There are several time jumps near the end of the book. Sometimes it felt like events were skipped over a bit abruptly, which made keeping track of them a little difficult for me.

Don’t read this book on its own. Earlier books introduced these villains and their motives, and that makes the experience much richer. The leads get their happy ending, but there’s a twist for some characters which makes me very excited to read the next book. The way the characters have been built over time makes me curious about where some of them will end up.

I received a free e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review -- an arrangement I've at least once gotten cold feet about with a new-to-me author lest my review wind up negative -- but I had no worries with a new CGC story from Carol Van Natta. My confidence was rewarded with another entertaining read featuring likable protagonists and secondaries, intriguing secrets gradually revealed and some still unfolding, and plenty of exciting action both aboard ship and on-planet.

Jess and Kerzanna go through a number of cover identities as they seek to evade whoever tried to kill her (so be warned if multiple names confuse you). They don't even have time to discuss what each of them experienced on the day they each believed the other had been killed, much less figure out how they were fooled and what actually happened, before their flight offworld becomes far too eventful, including betrayal and casualties -- and incidentally the temporary acquisition of a couple of ship's cats. Jess's painful-to-access mental "others" provide a very useful array of talents.

Trouble catches up with them again on the corrupt world of Ridderth, where they're trying to stay off the radar while leaking dangerous revelations about the CPS's abuses. They are also, for better or for worse, tangled up in a long game and a secret network, fulfilling the cryptic wishes of powerful, multi-talented, but possibly more-than-eccentric minder Neirra. She helped them, despite enduring a tortuous biomechanical "leash" forced on her by the ruthless but short-sightedly egotistical CPS supervisor Dixon Davidro, who holds similar physical and emotional controls over a number of uniquely talented individuals, his deadly "pets".

I don't want to give a recap of the plot, so I'll stop there and just say, don't count anyone out, even if they're reported dead, since twisters and cleaners can mess with memories and Jess can tie computer systems in knots.

By the way, while the central pair definitely have strong emotional bonds, old and new, don't expect much in the way of sexy scenes: timing is against them, where they're either too busy surviving or too tired/ injured to get up to much. You've got the wrong author if that's your main interest.

The ending is satisfying, resolving the major conflicts of this volume though not yet changing the whole system, and hopeful -- including for one character I hadn't expected. I'm eager to see where the series takes us next.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I really enjoyed it. The story was original, with lots of complex and well written characters. It lost a star because for a chunk of the book I felt as if I was missing some background information about the hero and heroine. (I'd assumed this was because I was reading book 4 in a series, but when I read the blurb for the other books I'm not so sure this is the case).

I really liked both the heroine and hero, they were well written and believable - although I found the reinstatement of their relationship a little sudden. In fact there were lots of characters involved in this book and most of them were very well written. The plot line twists and turns but flowed well and was easy to follow, even though it was written from multiple POV's.

I did struggle to keep track of some of the 'baddy' characters - some had a larger role and I could remember who they were/what they did but there were 3 or 4 characters who ended up just being 'names'. However this in no way spoilt the story for me.

I WILL be reading more work by this author - and seeing if Kerzanna and Jess are in any of the other books!

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.

Originally reviewed at West Coast Book Reviews.

Jumper's Hope, the fourth in Van Natta's Central Galactic Concordance series, keeps a firm grip on the original world building in its predecessors while expanding in to new characters and adventure. I found it delightfully action filled and loaded with surprises I didn't see coming though they made complete sense when the story threw me in to them.

I loved that her crop of bad guys is even more endearing and creepy than we first ran in to them. (How does she do that?)

Also, and I'm going to put this out here, Van Natta is a master at making you fall in love with her characters entirely by showing them to you through the eyes of another. She fills her characters with so much empathy and understanding of each other, as I reader I felt completely immersed in their relationships so when the bad things happened (and the did) there was a fantastic double (triple) whammy of worry for everyone.

I completely and whole heartedly recommend this series.

I very much enjoyed another book in this series - Pico's Crush - but this one left me flat. I'm not sure I can explain why. There is lots of action, emotion, and character interaction. Perhaps it was just the unrelenting nastiness of the villains, and the fact that not many people seem to care enough to do anything about it, until the very end, which feels a little deus ex machina.

Another good entry in this series. I wish Dixon was dead, so I wouldn’t have to worry about him turning up again. Very interested in the next story. Hope we don’t have to wait too long.
