This book was a sweet continuation of book one! It was a little bit meandering in the beginning and seeing Taichi's friend group is a bit disorienting because they're quite underdeveloped, but I like the new character in this and how the two boys' relationship progressed. The ending was in an awkward place that didn't really tie a lot together, but there is another sequel afterward, so maybe it's just that it paused midseries.

I Hear the Sunspot ★★★★★
I Hear the Sunspot: Theory of Happiness ★★★☆☆

While I really loved I Hear the Sunspot, unfortunately, this volume fell flat for me big time. The miscommunication trope was so over-used, that it felt like literally almost every single chapter was just more drama for no reason at all. I don't mind a little bit of miscommunication, but when these characters' interactions seem to constantly be separated by months of silence over it? No thanks. :(

Representation: Kohei and Maya are deaf; Kohei and Taichi are both queer

Content warnings for: ableism

Considering the title of this volume—Theory of Happiness—it sure did give me a boost of joy! This was everything I needed and more in terms of brightening my day!

While this is technically a continuation of the first volume, I feel that people would have no trouble reading this as a standalone. We continue to see Kohei, a boy struggling with a hearing disability, as his relationship with Taichi changes and progresses.

Yuki Fumino’s art style continues to impress me; I loved the character depictions and backgrounds! I’m definitely looking forward to continuing this series in the future.

[ Re-read in 2023. ]

"Even if I had to do it all over again, I think I'd still choose this life. Because since I met him, I've been so happy.”

This second volume is far more emotional than the first not only because there’s a new character that comes into the picture, but because it’s focused on finding the meaning to your life. Going to college and getting a degree doesn’t mean you’ll be successful or even happy; actually, it doesn’t matter what you choose to do with your life, your goal should be focused on what you want, who you want to become.

Is no secret that Kohei likes Taichi but sometimes feelings can be overwhelming –sometimes we don’t even know until time has passed and our chances are gone. Fortunately, Taichi finds the courage to confess his feelings towards Kohei, and he also drops out of college since he realized that he can do something for other hearing-impaired people.

I’d like to add that the art style improved a lot and I’m glad I continued with the series because this is a new-adult manga that deals with important things I wish I had read when I was their age.

Though it kind of deals with the miscommunication trope, by the end of the volume they talk things through and it ends up with a happy note. I seriously cannot wait to read the third volume! Totally recommend this!

This reminded me so much of Heartstopper: Volume One, but with disability rep. I like the tension between the two protagonists, and the introduction of new character Maya but I find the story itself sometimes misses the mark. There's too much filler in between the cute moments.

Yuki Fumino's I Hear the Sunspot: Theory of Happiness follows Kohei and Taichi as their relationship deepens and becomes both more meaningful and more complicated.

As in the first volume, Fumino paints a very compelling and delicate portrait of the two characters: Taichi is cheerful and headstrong but rather haphazard in his reactions whilst Kohei is slowly growing out of his shell as he starts gaining confidence in himself and the world around him.

The friendship in the book is absolutely central and the sweet love story between the two MCs is its natural progression.

A new sequel will come out in late November and I cannot wait to read it!

This book was so sweet and so cute, I have fallen more in love with the characters. And the progression of the relationship between the two main characters, Taichi and Kohei, was so beautiful. With the continued development of the main characters and you see the start of growth in one of the new characters. The plot is amazing because it really focuses on the journeys these two characters go through. With that it helped bring so many emotions throughout the story. This book hits you in the feels especially with the amount of joy and happiness this book brings. The art style of the series is gorgeous and so well detailed. Overall, I’m loving this series and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

This is the second instalment in the ひだまりが聴こえる manga series.

Kohei's impaired hearing is getting increasingly worse and he still feels isolated in any social setting. Taichi once proved a friendly face in the crowd and one slowly understanding the struggles he faced, but the two have hardly interacted since summer break. Are things cooling between them before anything really begun?

Just like in the first volume, this manga proved to be a wholesome and adorable, slow-burn romance. It also delivered the same heart-wrenching moments when Yuki Fumino exposed how Kohei struggled to understand and to be understood. I enjoyed witnessing Kohei and Taichi's characters grow, both individually and together, and lived for the sweet and tender moments between them.

However, much of this initially focused on the lack of communication between the two, which isn't a trope I enjoy reading about. I find it frustrating to be given information on how two sides are feeling and then to be left waiting for them both to admit it to the other. This passed and more plot points were introduced, which again captivated my interest.

The issue I had with the first volume was the lack of plot. I thought it a sweet story and appreciated the inclusivity, but wanted a little something more from the characters. I wanted to see them interact with others, understand their likes and dislikes, learn about their hopes and dreams, and see them in as many joyful as sorrowful moments. All of that was delivered here and I loved learning about and reading it all.

No he llorado; repito (miento): no he llorado.

OH MY GODDDD!! My heart is in swoon-city! This is a beautiful follow-up to the first manga in this series.

This is perfect in every single way possible. The flow is so much better, and I love how all of the major scenes connect.

the highlight here is once again taichi and kohei as characters. perhaps because no other characters besides maya and them are really given any depth, we get to spend a lot of time with them. they're nice characters to spend time with. so while the series does meander a bit and taichi and kohei struggle with communication at times, it's nice to see both of their thoughts and feelings throughout the manga. i also liked maya. so i'm looking forward to seeing what happens with her through the series as well.

I don't know what it is about this series, that it just tugs so easily at my heart strings. It's so delicate and subdued and it lets the characters and their relationships grow organically, without rushing them. It always hits so hard when Kohei talks about the isolation he suffers due to his hearing disability and people not making an effort to understand him. And Taichi, he's such a cinnamon roll, but he's a bit helpless at expressing emotions. That said, though, his character growth is really evident, especially in the confession scene which was incredibly sweet.

Just ordered the sequels because I can't wait to read more of this beautiful manga!

I HEAR THE SUNSPOT by Yuki Fumino is officially my favorite manga/graphic novel series. Taichi and Kohei are both college students who meet when Taichi literally crashes into Kohei’s isolated life. Their friendship forms when Taichi signs up to be Kohei’s note taker for class.

I am head over heels in love with these precious boys! I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this review without just vomiting all the scenes I love, but this is a spoiler-free zone, so I’m gonna rein it in!

I HEAR THE SUNSPOT has:

Loud and Obnoxious Boy meets Quiet and Stoic Boy (MY FAVORITE)

That sweet, sweet slow burn romance (ALSO MY FAVORITE)

Disability representation (that I personally feel is handled in an authentic way)

Really wonderful representation of how different folks fall in love and process their feelings

Beautiful illustrations

One of the best English translations

MLM love WITHOUT homophobia!

What I really love about this story is that, yes, it’s a romance, but it’s also largely about Kohei’s experience as someone with a hearing disability. Kohei is “hard of hearing”, not completely deaf. This puts him in a place where he doesn’t get the resources he needs because his disability isn’t “bad enough” but he also gets treated differently by his peers because his hearing isn’t “good enough” for seamless social interactions. It explores the challenges and stigmas that get placed onto folks with disabilities. For Kohei, either people think he’s helpless and infantilize him, or folks are dismissive because they don’t want to put in the extra effort of communicating with someone who has a hearing disability. Scenes range from blatant discrimination to the more insidious kind. This treatment of being labeled as someone with “special needs” makes Kohei feel resentful towards others.

Kohei as all but given up at trying to make friends until Taichi forces his friendship on him. Taichi doesn’t see Kohei as his disability. He likes being around Kohei and insists on being around him, even when Kohei is resistant. When Kohei tries to retreat from Taichi, Tachi forcibly drags him back. Kohei is constantly surprised by Taichi’s fierce defense and advocacy. For once, Kohei has found someone who sees him as a regular guy. That connection is what the romance is built off of, which is SO WONDERFUL.

There’s so many points where I just grabbed my book and shook it because I had SO MANY WONDERFUL FEELS! Like I said, this is a slow burn romance, and the romance gets heavier (and more angsty) in volume 2. There was definitely one point where I got angry about a certain situation, but, THANKFULLY, it was remedied about 5 pages later! Volume 2 is all about “will they or wont they?” with your favorite tropes, like Getting Too Drunk and Having to Stay Over, Who’s That Girl He’s Hanging Out With?, and I’m Going to Avoid and Hide from my Feelings.

If you’re looking for a gay love story with loads of tropes, disability representation, and slow burn romance, I HEAR THE SUNSPOT is the series for you! My copy of volume 3 is getting delivered today and I CANNOT WAIT TO DEVOUR IT!

✨🌟 9.5 out of 10 stars 🌟✨
Keywords: manga, romance, slice of life, shounen ai/ LGBT (gay), hearing impairment

I'm not crying! You are! Just kidding, I'm crying, like a whole lot. It's so heartfelt and beautiful.. I fell in love with each characters and it open my eyes to how people live their life differently. Even though it's BL (boys love) manga, it doesn't fethisize the characters and the romance feels natural. I love this manga very much!!!
