I was born and raised in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Wanting to escape life in a big city and concentrate more on working to live than living to work, I moved to the Outer Hebrides in the north-west of Scotland in 2004 and I have lived there ever since with my wife and dog.

I write post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, dystopian and horror fiction. I’ve released forty-two books across five different series - Safe Haven, The End of Everything, Relentless, The Burning Tree and Scares in Scotland.

In addition, most of my titles are now available as audiobooks narrated by Kim Bretton, so if you’re one of the many people who struggle to find the time to read, you can listen on the go.

This was an amateur read at best for me. I was unable to finish it around the halfway mark. I read a significant amount of zombie novels. It is one of my favorite genres. This feel extremely short for me. I felt the writing was immature compared to majority of the novels I have read. I will not be continuing with this series.

Great 1st episode to the RAM's series. Has it all ... Excellent Zombie thrills with fantastic graphics. Character development is relatable and authentic. Actually found myself getting pretty agitated with the patriarch, Farmer Joseph more than once and so wanted to shake him and say:"Man-Up"! Think Mike would have concurred. . . lol!

Mr. Salzman does a wonderful job bringing the story to life with his excellent narration, and hopefully audible makes the rest of this series available sooner rather than later. Awful to be left hanging.. . However, I have found waiting causes me to appreciate the next one even more.
They don't say patience is a virtue for nothing, after all .

This was a great book, nicely paced, good characters , and well written. Christopher Artinian has done a great job on his debut novel and I would recommend this to the fans of the post apoc and zompoc genres

If you love to read "zombie books", you have to read this one! It grabs you on the very first page & never lets you go!

The book follows the trials of Mike & his siblings, Emma, Sammy & Jake, as they try to live through the horrors of the Reanimated Corpses, better knows as RAMS. After their "safe" place in Leeds seems to be safe no longer, Mike decides they should try to reach the relative safety & isolation of their Grandmother's place in Scotland.

All of the characters are well-developed, the action is non-stop and there are plenty of brains & gore for the zombie lover. There are also enough poignant moments to make you look for a tissue. I can't wait to continue this series!

Another quick zombie read, but this one was exciting enough. The attempted quarantine was an interesting touch at the start, mostly zombie books just start straight in on the action and survival. I liked the characters and the build up for the next book, and so far no one is making the silly decisions that plague a zombie filled world. I'd definitely like to read more from this series and author in time. Four stars.

The thing that sets an apocalypse book apart from others is the character development.
This one wins on so many levels!
I cared about the characters from the first page, and my admiration for them grew as the chapters continued.
But y'all, Mike is not here for playing around when it comes to dispensing justice! I won't spoil it, but in that particular case, his actions were understandable.
I cannot wait to read the next one!

RAMS...well this book tought me a new word! I enjoy reading zompoc stories that are located in The UK because i always find it intriguing how the authors solves the weapon issue...But this book surprised me from the start .
First , you don't have the feeling that this is the book of a first time author, he builds some of the best characters ever, they are layered and have a strong background story and depht...You will start to care about them, and be scared for them...worry as if it is your own family.
The zombies that the author creates are fast an ravenous, no slow stupid shuffling zombies...no...Our RAMS or reanimated corpses are able to run, jump, lunge...you name it...they are even capable to attach themselfes to a car and follow they prey.
The book is very visual but has also a emotional component...one of my favorite zompoc novels that is setted in THE UK!
A real page turner, give it a go !

A fantastic start to a series.

I loved this book, it was an amazing read. The main characters, Mike and Lucy, are outstanding the others are a bit wishy-washy for me. In the situation in which the group find themselves, Mike is definitely the number one person that I would want by my side. It is so well-written that it makes reading it so easy, the pages just flow. It's a fantastic story and I would recommend anyone wanting to lose themselves to read it.

The ongoing zombie apocalypse has taken the life of their stepfather, leaving Mike and Emma to look after their younger siblings Sammy and Jake. The UK is holding on to order but the RAMS are disrupting the quarantine zone of Leeds more often and Mike is starting to put together a plan on trying to join their only remaining family in the north of Scotland at a rural self sufficient property. With their new friends Samantha and Lucy, the group decide to head north but they have no idea how bad the journey will be.

Generally, I love the initial outbreak of a zombie apocalypse, seeing the gradual panic, zombies running wild etc so my first thought here was 'damn, the book starts with the population already dealing with an outbreak'. But I actually really liked the way this began. The UK government lock down the country when the issues begin overseas, allowing them to better control a couple of small outbreaks. Food and utilities are rationed, curfews are in place, families look after their own sick using telephones for medical advice, disposal squads collect the dead. There is order and conscription to add to the security forces control of the situation. It's when these armed conscripts decide to set up as greedy militias and steal resources that things go downhill. It was a different start to a zombie book and I liked it.

I loved that the book was set in Yorkshire, an area that I love to visit so I know the general setting, which is nice. I'm also looking forward to seeing at least part of the series hopefully being set in Scotland. The book has everything that you expect in a zombie apocalypse book-the group deciding to make a dangerous road trip, evil bad guys taking advantage of the lack of rules to attack the vulnerable, scary zombie chases...all the things that I enjoy in this kind of book. It also happens to be really well written, which is an added bonus.

The characters are also really good. Mike is the alpha male responsible for his family now, trying to deal with a complicated relationship with his sheltered sister Emma, looking after two young siblings and trying to keep order in their lives without their stepfather. Emma quickly pulls herself together to repair that relationship which is good so there is no constant bickering beyond the first couple of characters. Lucy and Samantha are the doctor and nurse who come when Mike calls in the death and they end up joining the family as they flee north. I like that Lucy is the one who knows guns having come over from America, teaching Mike how to use them. That makes a change. As does the group fleeing in an ambulance!

We also meet other characters on the adventure, starting with a farmer and his family. Oh I needed every bit of patience concerning the actions of Joseph! To be fair, I did like the guy but he's not the smartest when it comes to an apocalypse. Alice at times seemed to be off in her own wee world and not getting the danger, but they were a nice family. We of course get the raiders who are stealing supplies in the area but they are small scale in this book. I expect to see more of that as the series progresses and I do intend to read on with it. There are about 12 books though so maybe I'll just read the kindle versions to save space!

I very much recommend this book as it looks like a potentially promising series.

3+ stars. Not a bad little story, certainly worth reading for all zombie fans like myself.

Zombie tales are my guilty pleasure and though they rarely challenge me or provide earth-shattering story-lines, I do admire anyone who can get past the usual standard formula for the genre by any means possible. "Safe Haven" seems to be a good start then to a series of same even if we are talking slobbering beasts, nasty bandits and what I suspect will eventually turn out to be cult-like survivors. The book reads quickly and for the most part smoothly and there's enough action going on aside from just the main focus to keep us involved with an ever-growing set of players and even extras (the librarians were a nice 'aside', bravo).

Whereas there isn't any big reveal about a unique release of the virus (at least not yet), Artinian has created a set of sympathetic characters in a relatively harrowing environment. I think the thing I liked most is that his characters are - for lack of a better descriptive - believably human and don't just suddenly sprout a cold-blooded, undiscovered knack for killing monstrous creatures in the space of a few pages. I do have to admit that I was surprised to see how much weaponry could be produced in rural England so quickly, but being from the States, I just assume most other nations are not quite so gun crazy. Who knows, maybe everyone but me is armed to the teeth for just these eventualities...

On the down side, the writing stumbles a bit as we switch points of view without any real transition (he could have used the word 'meanwhile' a LOT more and even put a space between some paragraphs to break things up). Typical for a first-timer book so no real biggie! Sadly as well, there's no true über-tension that would set this apart from any other zombie story even though the all-too-brief "battle scenes" at both the farm and the gangsters' hideout are nicely framed. Still, I found the overall setting works to our advantage - a 50-mile trek from Leeds to the surrounding farmlands keeps things pretty focused - and again, the characters seem to fit well together.

The strongest part of the story is certainly the first several pages as we learn all too painfully how far the virus has progressed and what it is doing to those affected, either directly or indirectly. That was a really strong way to introduce us not only to our cast but what was coming up! I guess the best compliment I could give to a middle-tier-plus zombie story such as this - and differentiate it from other books I have recently given 3 stars to (ye gods we need a better rating system here) - is that even though I don't place it in my upper grouping of same (including such greats as 'Girl With All the Gifts', 'Q Island' and others), I intend to continue to read THIS set of books. Very much worth signing up for particularly if you're a Kindle Unlimited junkie like myself!

Dial Z for Zombie

I'm always a sucker for a good zombie book and this one isn't half bad, good enough that I think I'll carry on until the next one when it comes out and see what the author does with it. Certainly, the epilogue to this one sent a shiver down the spine and was definitely one of the finest moments of the whole book. It's a story set after an initial zombie apocalypse has struck the world and yet Britain and Ireland are still just about holding out.

Of course, as the blurb says and any zombie fan will tell you that rarely turns out well and very soon Mike, his sister Emma and others are slammed into chaos. There's nothing genre-busting here, just a good old-fashioned zombie apocalypse story where people both live and the dead show their dark side. But it's a very decent story, and although the characters did at times have a tendency to make speeches rather than engage in normal dialogue it hummed along nicely.

S W Salzman obviously has some pedigree for narrating zombie books and he does a decent job of this one. I'm fairly forgiving about accent details judging from other reviews I have read of books that I have enjoyed. Salzman does enable clear distinction between male and female voices but other than that he doesn't have a wide range of styles. The biggest problem is that all of the characters sound a bit Eastern European which for a book full of English characters doesn't strike the perfect tone. Try the sample before buying if you think that will be an issue for you.

All in all, it was good for me and I look forward to seeing where this goes next. Mike, is certainly an interesting character worth following. It isn't hugely original in any way but it isn't trying to be and it is a decent story that rattles along at a decent pace.

I am so, so happy that I stumbled upon this book. It's no easy task to find a book in the zombie genre that is written well, but I managed to do just that when I discovered this one. In this genre, you get a lot of books that have poor grammar, poor spelling, missing words, bad punctuation, etc. When it comes to all of that, this book was 99% great. It was easy to read and flowed really well.

As for the plot of the book, it was a great story and was well written. I liked that it started after the apocalypse had already happened, which was a surprising and new angle for me, and a pleasant one at that. It was neat to read how the government had already made a protocol for how to deal with the dead on your own, as that was a new concept I'd never read about in the genre before. I liked where the plot took the characters, and then how more characters were introduced along the way. I also loved the wide variety of emotion that the book made me feel, from laughing to stress to relief.

I really only had 2 small gripes with the book. There was a female character who was either 32 or 34 years old, and she kept referring to other people as "sweetie". Maybe this is more common in the UK, but it just didn't ring true to me for someone of that age to do. There was also 2 moments in the book where the writing sounded like it came out of third person and went into first person, so I had to go back and figure out what was going on because it did throw me off a little.

Overall, I'll definitely be continuing on with this series, because it has left me caring what happens to these characters and wanting to know where this world takes them next.

A devastating virus has engulfed the world but the UK and Ireland have survived so far. Mike and his sister Emma along with their younger step brother Jake and step-sister Sammy are making do in Leeds. When the collapse begins Mike decides to head to their grandmother's in the northern part of Scotland. While packing up to leave, the gunfire and screams become louder and closer. Pounding on the door Lucy, a doctor and Stephanie, a nurse are rescued by Mike. Luckily they have arrived with an ambulance filled with much needed medical supplies. While heading north they rescue a farmer and his family from predatory fellow survivors. The group then heads to Candleton.
The characters are well written and I found myself praying for their welfare and saying over and over "Go, see Lucy." These RAMS are different from your run of the mill zombies as they're driven to spread the virus not by hunger. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy a fast paced, action filled, character driven story of the fight for survival against overwhelming odds. I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series.

We’re invited to a world-wide viral apocalypse from the shores of the United Kingdom. Great Britain and Ireland are the remaining strongholds of civilization. I’m usually not a fan of British local stories due to the sometimes difficult to understand accent that accompanies such stories. In this case, I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted without said accent. Our protagonist Mike Fletcher lives with his sister Emma in Leeds. Mike is a decent guy who will do anything to protect those he loves. Due to the spreading infected, it is time for Mike and sister to head out for safer pastures. They have a grandmother who lives in northwest Scotland which seems to be their best bet. Along the way, they come upon others needing their help. This is a journal of their travels and the difficulties they encountered. The characters are well-defined and quite likable. Although the character that made the story for me was Lucy. She contributed the necessary personality to give the tale some life. Without her, it would have been somewhat flaccid. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The RAMs in this case are reanimated humans, aka zombies. When the zompocalypse happens, England and Ireland close their borders and quarantine the areas with outbreaks, hoping to stem the tide. I really enjoyed that aspect of the story because I could see it really happening this way: the government controlling the news, weekly rations at a local pick-up point, guards on the streets.

And then of course it all falls apart and our heroes decide to attempt to make it from Leeds to northern Scotland and their grandmother’s house. All in all I enjoyed the development of most characters and the action is very well-written. Probably the one drawback is the main character, Mike, a 20-year-old who’s done a stint in Juvie who nonetheless comes across as a hardened 40-year-old combat vet or something. One of the things he does is downright sociopathic, but it’s played in the book as him simply having anger management issues and wanting to protect his family. Oooohkay.

Generally speaking though, this was a fast-paced and action-packed take on the genre.

Speechless !!!!

Unbelievable talent is not enough to say about the way the Author delivers his story to the reader.
I swear that when I listened to the book it felt so real, i could feel each character and his thoughts like i was in his brain, and the narration probably got a lot to do with that.
Her reading is so clear, easy to understand, beautiful voices like being hypnotized, i just wish i had the words to describe how amazing those two work together, its just WOW.
This story is amazing and i only got started with the series which worries me because if it will continue the same way i don’t know how the reviews will be different from this one.
Thank you for your creation Christopher Artinian and for your voice Kim Bretton !

Where did I find it: on Amazon. I wanted to read an exciting apocalyptic book. Having read the author before, I went to see what else he had.

What I liked: how I was immediately plunged into the action. From the get-go the adrenaline pumped and I couldn’t find a gap to close the book to do something else. Loved the characters, Mike was a great book hero. The whole zombie story was page-to-page action. I also liked that they were called RAMS – all explained in detail.

What I didn’t like: hmm, can’t say there was anything really. Perhaps the scary thought of – what if this happened?

Overall: I loved the high-adrenaline ride of Safe Haven. The story is exciting and entertaining in every way. Apocalyptic, zombie, and series lovers, will adore this, especially as it’s all in Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited. It puts a different spin on the traditional zombie story. Highly recommended.

Amazing Book

This is one of those books that you know right from page one that you are going to love it and love it I did.
This is a beautifully written book whose characters draw you in and make you care about them right from the start. A fast paced story line with twists and turns that you just don't see coming.
I love the author's description of the RAMs, painting a brilliant minds eye picture of his disgusting creations!!! This, together with a gripping story and such likeable characters make for one bell of a book.
I finished this book last night, bought the next one which I'm half way through and just know I'm going to end up staying up all night to finish it. That's how good these books are.

I love this series and thought the author did a great job at bringing the characters and story to life. I highly recommend this author and all of his work.
Give him a try you will not be disappointed.
Wow this series has it all, a fast pace storyline, lots of action, interesting and complex characters. I really like that Mike understands that the RAMS are not the only threat that is out there now in this new future life. He also knows it is his family over everyone else. He can make the heart wrenching decision no one else wants to make. If his group keeps listening to him he will get them through this new nightmare life they now live in. I can’t wait until I read the next book and see what is coming for the group next.

Safe Haven, Rise of the RAMs definitely delivered, meeting my highest expectations. I knew it would be fantastic within the first few minutes, and I wasn't wrong. It's well-written, chilling, horrific with a unique take and entertaining storyline that captures the attention and engages the readers/listeners from the very start to the end. The characters are well-developed, intriguing, brave, and wholly authentic. I couldn't ask for a better zombie book. Well done!!

A stellar performance by Kim Bretton; she literally brought the characters and the story to life. Safe Haven - Rise of the RAMs is a fantastic zombie post-apocalyptic tale and definitely worth the listen. I strongly recommend this audiobook.

The story of a zombie outbreak in England and the subsequent breakdown of society, told mostly from the perspective of siblings Mike and Emma. When the end of civilisation comes, the siblings head off with their young half-brother and half-sister, all that's left of their family, intending to head for a relative's house in Scotland. But the zombies are everywhere, as are people intent only on their own survival and needs. The world is now a deadly place and good, safe people are becoming more rare by the minute. Fortunately, they meet up with a doctor and nurse, two girls, and team up with them as they seek shelter and safety. A good little book, with great moments along the way. Very enjoyable.

This first book in the 'Safe Haven' series had me engrossed by page 1. I couldn't put the book down because it was so action packed, I just wanted more!!!
You immediately get a feel for each character and know them distinctly by their names.
I highly recommend this series to anyone that loves the zombie apocalypse genre, but tired of the same 'ol slow, rotting, predictable munchers.
These zombies are dead, but retain the speed and desire to infect anyone they can catch, which could be you if you're not in shape.
I have one simple word to give you a heads up if you're confronted by these creatures that are no longer human.....RUN!!!!!

Wow

What can i say about this book. I've read many zombie books over the years and even more so since I got kindle unlimited, however this one is one of the best.

Action packed from the start to finish with very relatable and likable characters, the book stands above most of the others available. I know one of the characters is due to die and i can predict the outcome of it, however as proven with the interrogating chapter in this book, things don't always happen the way you think they would!

Brilliant story with some excellent characters, I'm looking forward to starting the second book!

This is a really good book. Great take on zombies and how it could be temporarily contained if government got their crap together. Still there are no absolutes and always human error. Can’t wait for the next installment because I need to know what happens with Joseph..... can’t say it’s a secret when even he doesn’t know what’s going on with him. Can’t help but feel other would recognize it in him but then that would make for a different story.
Salzman did an amazing job narrating! He always does!

Rise of the Ram's (Safe Haven, #1)
by Christopher Artinian
The audible version is remarkable in its haunting presentation. The story of the pandemic in England. It started slowly with a heart wrenching story of a young man having to deal with the death of his step father. The nightmare only starts after his last breath. The Book shows the horror of a world gone wrong. The devastation of country after country has hit the isolated world of the English countryside. Its a great story of human resilience and persistence. Mike is a person who is made for this world, his devastating struggle in his childhood, is what makes it work so well.

If you're into the 'zombie' genre, then this is an excellent first book in this series. There is plenty of action and suspense. There is sufficient unique world building to avoid the feeling of a cookie cutter zombie book. Crucial elements of this book are the family relationship dynamic of the main characters, the broader view of what constitutes 'family' and the thematic treatment of moral decision-making as black and white contrasted with as black and white plus a whole lot of shades of grey and the translation of these world views into action. You'll want to jump straight into book 2 once you've finished this one.
