Another fabulous read from The deadman's cross series!!! I adore this series and it's amazing characters so much!!! This is Xuri and Valynda's story and it was a awesome page turning read with plenty of action, passion and emotional moments as well. The gods and villians are plenty and still going out of their way to make everyone's life hell. The deadmen are fighting baddies left and right , with Adarian Malachai in the lead !! All valynda wants is to be human again and to get revenge for xuri's betrayal ,but their is more to the story and xuri won't stop til valynda knows the whole truth. Their was a lot going on in this book and some old favorites stopped by like ash, savitar, thorn,Hades and my girl the simi!!! Love her and her barbeque sauce!!! And some new character's from the mysterious and powerful goddess Circe who is the captain of a ship of forsaken and damned women. Will valaynda make a bargain with this powerful goddess or Will she help Adarian destroy the world and xuri along with it.!! So intense!!! And their also be Dragons!!!! Yes I said Dragons!!! Not just any dragons either but hot, sexy warrior sea dragons and I'm very interested in both Nazar and his brother Karawan !! They sound delish!. Captain bane and the crew of the deadmen are back with one hell of a adventure,so sit back get comfy and enjoy the ride I know I did!! Until next time luv's💖💋

This is Valynda’s and Xuri’s story. Valynda was tortured, betrayed and murdered only to be resurrected as a doll by Thorn. He transforms her into a walking, talking voodoo like being. She may be made of straw, but she remembers everything and feels even more. With her new body she joins the Sea Witch, a ship with a mission to return demons to the hell they came from.

When captured by Malachai, she is offered a chance at a real life with a real body if she would just betray those she has found as friends.

Xuri was Valynda’s first and only love. When he comes back into her life, she must decide whether she can live as a straw doll and her friends and Xuri or a chance at a real life in a world running on pure chaos.

I am really enjoying this spin off from the Dark Hunters. Kenyon is a queen of paranormal fiction writing, developing characters that entice the reader to join the fictional world she masterfully creates. I love delving into one of Kenyon's books and At Death's Door was a fabulous addition to the Deadman's Cross world.

I received this ARC copy of At Death's Door from Tor Books - Macmillan. This is my honest and voluntary review. At Death's Door is set for publication Sept. 10, 2019.

Valynda was abused, tortured, betrayed and murdered but thanks to Thorn she has been resurrected although without a body of her own she’s transformed into a walking, talking Poppet ! Yes Vala has a body of straw and whilst her heart might not beat that doesn’t mean she doesn’t feel or remember and as a member of the crew of the Sea Witch it’s her mission to return Demons to hell. Trouble is she’s a captive of the Malachai who wants to unleash chaos and he has a bargain for Vala that could see her returning to human form. Does she betray those she’s grown to care about or can her first and only love Xuri convince her that no matter what she’s seen or heard he really would risk the wrath of multiple Gods to save her ?
As a fan of this authors Dark Hunter series this spinoff is a must read for me and I’m really enjoying the different religious slant here. Previously it’s been Greek, Sumerian and Native American myths that have coloured the background but with these books and their pirate lore it allows the author to explore the Voodoo angle. I liked Xuri the Loa as he’s full of surprises and his magic whilst not limitless was very entertaining and full of surprises. Sadly I found Vala to be irritating as she constantly changed her mind about Xuri and how she felt about his actions. Of course it was a joy to read the scenes that included Thorn, Jaden, Savitar and of course the glory that is Acheron ! The dialogue just made me smile so much and it was fabulous imagining them amongst this world of piracy and witchcraft. Plus there are exciting scenes with unexpected monsters that I enjoyed reading. Sadly I did not enjoy this couples romance quite as much as previous stories so sadly that does affect my rating of this book but I would still recommend this series although I do think the reader gets more out of it if it’s read in order.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

Val was betrayed, tortured and turned into something else that was not how she was made. She lost her love, her life, her body, her trust and her soul. What else could the Gods take from her ? Not much so they give her something precious back and then bargain/blackmail her to let her keep a touch of what she wants. It's not a good bargain, it's a dark one feed on hate, lies and revenge. Finding the truth and fighting for her heart will make or break her.
I love this series of haunted pirates and demons. It's got all the elements I love in a book, adventure, blood, tears, strong women, magic, Acheron and other hot men. Sigh~ Acheron <3. Unfortunately, this one was not my favorite of the series but still an entertaining read and a worthy adventure for these characters I've grown to love in this author's series (Dark Hunters, Dream Hunters and this one) one world three groups. I enjoyed the outside characters more than I did the main characters of this story.
This one had a personal feel to it that was distracting me from the enjoyment of the story. There is a horrible long death written into the book, that relates to something in real life for the author. I just couldn't break away from thinking about it and her pain.
Then POV's and timelines kept changing and it was hard for me to catch on to what time or pov had it switched to. It was so confusing, I had to backtrack too many times, and still it was a struggle to figure out what was what.
Val, was such a waffler. I love him, I hate him, I will hurt him, I'd never hurt him. She would sitch back almost in the same breath, and she did it so much.
Lastly the info dumping at the beginning was overwhelming. The first 35% was filled with names history, acts, times, it was almost enough to make me quit the book.
Will I continue the series in this world, yes ! I know these people and can't wait to see where they end up.
I received an advanced copy of this book for an honest review

I’m honestly not sure what to think of this book......

The main characters’ feelings toward each other kept flip flopping that it hurt my head. I hate him and want to take vengeance but oh no wait I love him but wait can I trust him..... I’ve lover her forever but can I trust her but I love her. Gah!

The POVs kept changing so fast within a chapter I wasn’t sure who was thinking at times.

The characters themselves were confusing as well. One minute Val’s shoots lightning from her fingers and has never had powers and then it’s just ignored after that?????

She also has a vision of damning herself and Nibo if they stay together and yet she’s pissed when she thinks he betrayed her and let her go?

Also she’s actually reincarnated but no one knew or knows how l?

The ending just kind of stopped and was also confusing. They’re about to fight the malachai and he just disappears and weeks and months go by and then bam they’re all in New Orleans and are parting ways. Wtf?

Will there be more deadmen books? Because it seems like the story line will just jump forward in time to Fantasy Lover and start the dark hunter series with that ending.

5 Star Death's Door
As a result of a spell gone wrong, Valynda Moore died and became trapped in the body of a voodoo doll. She expected nothing else from her messed up life, until Thorn, leader of the Hellchasers, offers her chance at redemption and a new life. She and crew of Deadmen have sworn to keep the beast locked away, but the Malachai has risen and this time he’s taking not prisoners. It’s a demon-eat-demon world where the stakes have never been higher and either redemption or the ultimate betrayal waits for her At Death’s Door.

The final Deadmen’s Quest is an exhilarating, entertaining and adventurous read with a smorgasbord of wonderful, strong, charismatic characters that not only enthrall you with their story, they make readers feel as if they are taking part. The story has a forbidden romance that been happening for quite some time between Nibo (Death) and Vala, the chemistry between them is undeniable electrical but this romance has some major obstacles and emotional distress that will have to be conquered before they can reach for an HEA.

The plot is fast paced and never has a dull moment as one exciting event takes place after another from learning about the beginning of Nibo and Vala’s love to a major battle with the Malachai. For the most the story takes place on a ship that has a delightful variety of crew members and lots of witty dialogue that really makes the story pop and readers can’t help but become caught up in this epic, energetic and sometimes deadly adventure.

Valynda Moore is a very unlucky woman. When she is cursed to have a straw body by men that were suppossed to love and protect her, she is offered a human body only if she would steal the crook of the Loa Nibo God of Death for the Malachai Adarian. Will she do it and send the world to its doom? Read on and find out for yourself.

This was a great finale to the Deadman's Cross Trilogy Pirate supernatural fantasy series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. If you like stories about pirates, demons and more then be sure to check out all of the Deadman's Cross series at your local library and wherever books are sold.

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. This review kills me to write, and I've put it off for some time. I am a huge fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon and for one of her books to just totally fall short for me was devastating. I was really looking forward to this conclusion to the Deadman's Cross series.

The biggest thing that sticks out for me about this book is how many times we have long, unnecessary diatribes about the suffering the two main characters have endured. How everyone in their life has done them wrong and terrorized them their whole lives. Hearing the character's back story makes sense. But having it take up most of the book was just too much. It took up time that we could have been having adventures and new stuff happening. I found myself shaking my head every time we rehashed Valynda's and Xuri's stories.

Also, after following the author on social media, I felt like some of her real life experiences were being brought into this story. It was interesting to hear how the situations were handled by the characters.

There was some good action scenes, and the Malachai is an ever present danger, gathering his troops to take on the world, but I just felt there was so much "poor me" from the main characters, that it swallowed up all the short bursts of action we did get.

I do enjoy seeing Acheron and Thorn in the early days. We even get a bit of Simi which is always fun. The story leads us to New Orleans so we get to see New Orleans start up as the main site for the Dark Hunters.

It hurts me to say there was little I enjoyed in At Death's Door. It was a story that I debated giving up on many times. This is just my opinion and you could very well have a different one after reading. I'd really like to hear what you liked or did not like about this story. This review was originally posted on Rantings of a Reading Addict

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

After losing everything, including her life, Valynda has sworn her loyalty to the Deadman’s Crew in exchange for a chance of getting her soul back. Of course, being part of the Deadman’s Crew is never easy. This time, the crew will have the Malachai to battle with but the worst battle for Valynda may be forgiving the man she blames for her current situation.

I enjoyed Valynda and Nibo’s story. Their first meet reminded me of Fantasy Lover, which is the first book of the Dark Hunter series. Summoning a paranormal being by a human just makes a mark on you, LOL. I thought it was funny and cute. So are Valynda and Nibo. I like them both as individuals and as a couple. I love that no matter the time or situation, Nibo never gave up on his love. Valynda was a little bit more complicated. Their fall out was rough for her and she has a more unforgiving heart. But I give it to her, she is one tough cookie.

If you’re familiar with this series or Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series, characters from other books and different timelines are usually involved in current stories.  With that said, I loved reading more of Jaden, Savitar, Thorn, and Acheron who are big characters from Kenyon’s Dark Hunterverse now also known as Hunter Legends . Reading more of their past or current lives in this book made me love them even more. I don’t think I can ever tire of them or their involvement in the DH world.

I especially love the mention of the Malachai’s(Adarian) background in this book which is closely connected with several storylines from DH Series. Though I have not finished Chronicles of Nick, reading more of his story hits me emotionally as I know his part in Nick’s life. Dare I say, there’s more to him than meets the eye? Maybe there is. I’d like to read his story and the mother of his child.

Deadman’s Cross is the last of the trilogy and at this point, though we get a happy ending for Valynda and Nibo, the series seems unfinished to me. This is not necessarily a cliff hanger or a bad thing to me.  Kenyon left several openings and new information that connects and eventually will lead to present time DHverse. This is the web Kenyon weaved of the complicated Dark Hunter world and I love every bit of it.

Sherrilyn Kenyon’s AT DEATH'S DOOR (Deadman's Cross #3) is a pirate fantasy set in her Dark-Hunter world. In this story, Valynda Moore is trapped in the body of a voodoo doll. Along with the crew of Deadmen, she is tasked with fighting demons and locking the Malachai away. Meanwhile, Nibo is trying to win back Valynda’s affection.

AT DEATH'S DOOR is an entertaining and exciting read. At times, this series reminds me of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. They both have a lot of humor and action. Sherrilyn Kenyon does a great job with her plot and character development. Nibo and Valynda have considerable chemistry. There were interesting twists in the novel. I like that Sherrilyn Kenyon includes characters from her other series. Especially, Acheron (Dark-Hunter) who is one of my favorites.

I appreciated that at the end of the story it explained how the Dark-Hunters, Were-Hunters, and Hellchasers end up headquartered in New Orleans. I recommend this story to Dark-Hunter fans and people who enjoy pirate fantasies. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Valynda is more than a little cursed. A spell went haywire and she ended up trapped in a doll! Now resurrected, thanks in no small part to Thorn, she is ready to face the rest of her demons.

The Malachai are still causing havoc with their attempts at world domination. Val and crew of the Deadmen have made an oath to keep the monster locked away and they will die (again in some cases!) to honour that oath.

Val does waver more than bit. You never know if she wants her true love from one money to the next! I got whiplash moe than once! However, the banter is great between all the characters. As a bit of a history nut, the setting was so atmospheric and really fit the tempo of the story.

AFTER READING:
SPOILERS AHEAD, BE WARNED!

This was the last book in this trilogy. Just like in the Intensity, everything and nothing happened at the same time. Sherrilyn McQueen writes wonderful stories but her skill to write an ending that has at least the same momentum as her other books is non-existent.

Valynda and Ghede Nibo got their happy ending. She got her body back. She has many powers but it was not explained why. Adarian wanted her as her ušumgallu but, again, it was not explained why. Vine was mentioned, she is maybe dead but probably not. Gadreyal was not mentioned at all. Maman Brigitte is an alter ego for Celtic goddess Brigid a.k.a. Thorn's past lover and Cadegan's mother.

This book was okay but I just want to forget it.

AFTER THE PAIR ANNOUNCEMENT:

IT'S GHEDE NIBO AND VALYNDA!!!

BEFORE RELEASE:

Probably William Death...

He could end up with Devyl's sister, Elf. She is newly resurrected. Why resurrect her if she is not going to be featured?

Really did not like it. Again, had the feeling like I was missing half the story and was very confused by the different species and flavor of bad guy. Perhaps I have just been out of this world for too long. Aside from that, the story was just boring. The main characters were very shallow and their motivations were endlessly repeated. About half the book could have been edited out. This one just didn't do it for me. If I come back to Kenyon's books I'll go back to her older stuff to get caught up but for the time being I think I'm good.

I will be reading this again, later on. I think the narrator ruined this for me and I was super super lost in the world building and details. I will begin with book one in the trilogy and read it physically and see if that helps. I got to 50% and just need to set it aside, as the narration was too distracting to focus on the story.

Oh Poor Me! That seems to be the theme of this book. Valynda was a great character in the other books and such a whiny, pathetic character in her own book. Drove me crazy! "Oh the bad guy we have been fighting against this whole time shows me something bad about the one I loved and of course I believe him right away!" She almost fell in the to stupid to live catagory. Enjoyed all the other characters but her!

I liked the trilogy, sorry to see it end on such a bad note.

I DON'T WANT IT TO END!

I expected a lot from this one. A big battle at the end with the Deadmen, Thorn, Savitar maybe, Archangel Michael against the Malachai and his army.
Meh!

My heart hurts for the story of Nibu and Valynda. They suffered so much. And deserved a happy ending. I wanted an excruciating death for Nibu's asshole twin brother.

My little theory is that those characters that needed to be dealt with and the ones who deserved a happy ending will meet their fate in future books.

I was glad to see Acheron. I am always happy to see him interact with Savitar, Thorn and now Captain Bane.

I can't wait to read the next Dark-Hunter/Hell-Chaser books.
I need my fix of those sexy and lethal races.

I found this one dragged at times and what happened with the characters is much like what has happened in other books in the Kenyon universe. It wasn't til the end that things picked up for me. I liked how this book showed how the Malachi ended up in New Orleans and what everyone else did to protect the world and their people, how NOLA became such a powerhouse in the present in these books.

This was really good and I loved the segue that shows how Nick comes to be. The biggest problem I had with this story though, was there was a lot of repitition. The same thing said over many times. Other than, I loved it. And I can't wait to see if there's another coming.

trash

What a slug. For someone that has over a dozen books published, this author cannot write for shit. I read some other reviews and it appears this books is a huge self insert of her angry negative emotions. But come on, did she proof read nothing?

But, Aleixci, you're reading the third book of a series and it takes place in her already well established Dark-Hunter universe. Of course you're not going to understand everything.

Alright, fair. But I did my research. This book is meant to be a stand alone story. It takes place in the past of her other main storyline. And you'd think with all the goddamned exposition she "unnecessarily" included, it's its own story.

But god was it terrible. There was no timing, no intimacy, everyone suffered from "hot" syndrome. The main heroine Valynda is a whiny, woe-is-me, moody, petty bitch. She complained about everything. From her murder to her straw body to her her love interest betrayed her. Over and over while being completely useless. She didn't do a single thing in this book. Other that trying to be "feisty" and back-talking to people that can kill her. But those people . . . thought it was . . . brave? And said "oh, you're so brave, let me not kill you now"? Huh?? [*not actual quotes]

Valynda cleared her throat to politely get her favourite psychopomp's [love interest's] attention off the much more beautiful woman before she completely escaped everyone's memory.

Like, huh? What is that line? That's your strong woman? Your brave, back-talking angel? What a joke.

Valynda winced at words that meant the god had been without sex and his wife for months now. Which put him in an obviously bad mood and them at a great disadvantage.

Nibo flashed him a charming grin. “Well, you’re not me type.”

Hades crossed his arms over his chest. “Really? You’re going to piss me off more? You think that’s a wise move to make?”

“Can’t seem to help myself.”

“You should try.”

“Why, when this is so much fun?”

Hades blasted him. “Aye, it is.”

What the actual f*ck is that dialogue? This shit useless filler is between all the characters. Imagine reading that every time you meet a new character. Everyone has the same amount of cringy humor. Everyone is so badass. Like my favourite movie once said: and when everyone's super badass, no one will be". Stop. Shhh. Give them real flaws. Real goals. No, getting tail from your useless pretty doll is not a real goal. No, being hot is not a real flaw.

I just can't. This was marketed as a pirate story. Other than cringy "me [noun]" and the fact that they spend 1/2768732 of the book on a ship, there is nothing pirat-y about it. I wanted my pirates. Running from the law. Treasure hunting. Aleixci, the real treasure is the friends they made along the way. Shut up.

I'm so angry. Just don't read this trash. You'll find better fanfiction. Why are dark fantasy romance books so fucking awful?

Do not recommend. Whomever wrote the blurb on the back of the book has more writing talent than this author. It's a real skill to make this trash plot sound appealing.

Another winner by the Author Goddess. At Deaths Door brings the Deadmen Series to a close and we see why the Dark Hunters set up headquarters in NOLA. This book is typical Sherrilyn Kenyon (McQueen) with plenty of sarcastic back and forth as well as the ever beautiful poetic wisdoms we all love about them. I only hope this is not the last book she produces.

The novels are becoming more and more trite. The main characters aren't interesting. They spend so much time with their "woe is me, no one loves me" discourse that it is beyond nauseating. Kenyon could have picked any other pair to close out the trilogy and it would have been an improvement. They just weren't likable, especially the heroine. She was incredibly annoying.

To give the characters some semblance of depth there was the usual horror show of a background story showing why the characters are so moody but it's beyond old at this point. How many more times will the same story be told? I used to really love the Dark Hunters series but I don't know how much longer I can take it. Which sucks since I've read practically every book :(

Thank you Netgalley and Tor books for the Advanced copy of At death’s door. What a blast! While this was the end of the Deadman’s Cross trilogy it is still in the Dark Hunter world and had plenty of character cameos! I highly recommend reading the first 2 books first. This story is Valynda’s and Xuri story. Valynda was killed and was brought back to life as a straw doll by Thorn. She always thought Xuri betrayed her, and now the Malachai offers her a chance of a real body...but she needs to betray the man she loves...who betrayed her...will she do it?
Lots of great action, romance, snarky lines, and yes some of them are from Acheron...and Savitar

It was a great prequel to Nick’s storyline as well and how everyone ended up in New Orleans.

The previous book left off on a cliffhanger, so I continued..
Again, I liked the characters.
Val who's made of straw made an interesting protagonist female.
But the repetitious angst & secrets everyone is hiding became tedious.
Another crossover. Another one with information overload.
The ending was anti-climactic. And are there going to be more in the series b/c it seemed like the writer hinted at such.
This time, I thought it was a good thing that I was a fan of the tv show 'Supernatural' b/c I didn't have to look up as many paranormal people. Whew! (who said binging your fave tv show was pointless??)
Whew!

The best book in an amazing series but not gonna lie there is a bit of finality feeling in this book!! Valenda and Nibo are funny and outrageous and the pieces that come out in this book from the dark hunter series are like WHAT!?!????!?? Eeekkkkkkk Ms. McQueen (Kenyon) has really blown this one out of the water I hope she can get back to writing so that we can keep this amazing story going!!! #Istandwithsherrilyn
