Trouble #3

Trouble Never Sleeps

Rate this book
Happily Ever After gets a serious makeover in this swoony, non-stop, thrill-ride of a conclusion to the Trouble Is a Friend of Mine trilogy

No one makes getting into trouble look as good as Philip Digby—and he looks good doing it. Now that he's back in town, he's plunged Zoe (and their Scooby Gang of wealthy frenemy Sloane, nerd-tastic genius Felix, and aw-shucks-handsome Henry) back into the deep end on the hunt for his kidnapped sister. He's got a lead, but it involves doing a deal with the scion of an alarmingly powerful family, not to mention committing some light treason. Zoe and Digby are officially together now, and she's definitely up for whatever closure this new caper might offer, even though this mystery will come with a twist neither expected.

With acerbic banter, steamy chemistry, and no small amount of sarcasm, Zoe and Digby are the will-they-or-won't-they, charismatic crime solving couple you've been waiting for.

MAN, that was super satisfying. I don't think anything will ever live up to the perfection of the first book, but Trouble Never Sleeps certainly gave the Trouble trilogy a high note to go out on. I'm gonna miss the ragtag River Heights crew! Full review to come closer to release.

I need this immediately, but I'll settle for April. Zoe & Digby are the best slow ship of all time, fight me.

i truly considered not finishing this trilogy because of how atrocious this cover is. that being said, the first book was much better than the following two, but it was too late to turn back. that is all, thank you.

This book was as messy, wild, emotional, and laugh out loud funny as I wanted it to be. The pop culture banter, crazy circumstances, and unpredictability of it all makes this the perfect conclusion to the series. But, like, possibly not conclusion? The ending has a couple of loose threads that make me think the author is leaving a door open but it could also for sure be the end. I always want more when it comes to Digby and Zoe and the rest of the cast (I adore them all—even Sloane, who I never thought I could ever love). Aside from maybe an epilogue a few months later so I can make sure al my bbys are faring well, this is pretty much everything I wanted out of this book.

TOTAL READING TIME: 2 hours, 59 minutes.

I looooved the first two books of this trilogy, Trouble is a Friend of Mine especially. I just wanted Zoe and Digby to get to the bottom of Sally Digby's disappearance 9 years before the events of the books, and I was so excited when the last book was finally announced.

Me not enjoying this book as much as I hoped is definitely partly my fault. I read the second book Trouble Makes a Comeback in August 2017 exactly two years ago, so I've forgotten almost everything that happened in that book, which were all continued or referenced in this one. So the entire time I was reading this I was just confused and kept trying to remember who the other characters were and what they did.

But my main issue with this book is that it all felt so... rushed. You'd think the final book of a trilogy would be the longest and/or the most action-packed but this book was shorter than the first two and the pacing felt off. I feel like the first two books could have been longer and that this book didn't need to exist.

Re-Read: still in love. So much in love. I laughed out loud a lot, I was on the edge of my seat a lot (metaphorically more so than literally), I felt a lit of complicated twisty gut feelings because of relationship-stuff. This was a great third book, a great ending to a trilogy, I want more but the ending was seriously perfect. I loved it.

[deep breath] I love it I love it I love it I love it I love it ...

When we walked in, mom said, "Hello, Digby. Welcome to dinner. I made your favorite." She waved at the dining table. "Food."

If you are anything like me and you've been in love with this series and have been dying for this last instalment to hit (your) shelf, then I have one (crucial) recommendation to make/propose: Take the time to re-read the previous two books right before you dive into this one. This has several opportunities: 1. You will be in full on Trouble-craze, 2. You have all the details right in front of you, 3. There is a time jump between the first and the second book - there is absolutely no time jump between the second and the third book so it actually feels really nice to just go from one to the other without having to pause, 4. Overall awesomeness.

"But," Digby said. "I'm going to need something in return."
"I will give you literally every cent I make this summer," one player said.
Another one said, "How much du you want?"
"He doesn't want money," Henry said. "You don't want money, right? Wait. Do you want money?"
I recognized the look on Digby's face. "Nope, it's going to be a lot weirder than that," I said.
"I want a human sacrifice," Digby said.
"For example," I said.
Someone in the back said, "You can have my brother. No one's going to miss that idiot."
"I bet my mom would even pay you to get my dad out of the picture," another player said.

Honestly, as always when I've read a last book in a series that I have been loving this much, I feel like I am at a loss of words. Obviously, I loved this book so, sooo much. Obviously, I loved all the characters (but I've been loving them for a while), and I really enjoyed where the plot went (it felt pretty similar to the previous books but also not?), and I liked all of the additional story-elements that were treated even though everyone's live was, basically, turned on its head by Digby's continuous interference and miscommunication.

But, besides all that, there really isn't that much I can say to you if you haven't read the book yet. Apart from: you should read it. And if you're new to this series altogether: what are you doing? Get on with it! I swear it's worth it! :D And if you're not new to the series but don't like it: that's fine but depending on the kinds of problems you've had with previous books this one might actually be more to your liking so maybe give it a shot anyways?

Uh, yeah, that's it. Feels kinda dumb to conclude a review like that but, you know, talk to me as soon as you've finished reading this book for yourself and we can gossip about all the major drama that takes place in this story like it's real life! Sounds fun? Heck, yeah, it does!

My Blog

"I said 'Don't do it' but you thought I meant 'Attack the armed and dangerous criminal'?" When I nodded, Digby said, "Wow. I have driven you crazy."

This series has been weird for me. I didn’t care for the first one, but I liked the other two. I think I would enjoy them a lot more if I ever binged them because I went into this one with absolutely no idea wtf was going on.

The relationship between Zoe and Digby is what kept me reading. I’m amused at their push and pull and odd dynamic that seems to really work for them. I still loved Sloane and their other friends, but the strangeness of it all is what I enjoyed.

Plot wise, it was fast paced from the beginning and didn’t stop. The ending was intriguing and satisfying and maddening all at the same time. It doesn’t feel like it’s over and if there’s another book, I’ll be reading.

I loved the first two books of the Trouble series, and I was so excited when the third book was announced! Book two ended in a bit of a cliffhanger, so it was nice to have the closure we've (including the characters) been looking for, for so long.

The gang is back to their antics in this book. They've grown so much since the first book that I cried a little :'). It's always nice to see your favorite characters again, and really, they are out in full form. Clever Digby, headstrong Zoe, good-natured Henry, prickly Sloane, and the adorable Felix; their group dynamic is hilarious, and I love seeing their scenes together, whether in a robbery (or a few lol), a con, or just hanging out

AND the romance (finally)!!! Digby and Zoe are such a great couple and I genuinely love their relationship so. much. There were some, uh, steamy scenes (cough, the opening scene, cough), but they still had their witty banter as seen throughout the series. At one point, Zoe and Digby discuss who in the gang is who in the Archie comics, a conversation that made me laugh.

I am so glad I finally read this series, because Digby and Zoe were a fantastic duo, and I enjoyed getting to know them. I wanted to give Tromly a hug, because I was really happy with the way she wrapped up the mystery of Digby's sister. As always, it was a fun journey with Zoe and Digby. There are multiple side conflicts cooking in the background as Digby and Zoe continue their search for Sally, and I was happy with the way Tromly wrapped those up. Digby's little romantic gesture delighted me, but I would have been over the moon if there had been a epilogue. Though, the ending may it seem like there was a possibility of more adventures with Zoe and Digby, and I would be wholly on board for that.

The conclusion to the Trouble series came and went as quickly as the first 2 books did. This was an easy and enjoyable read with a fluid and almost unimportant mystery in comparison to the relationships and romances which were the majority focus of the book.

The revelation of the ultimate truth took me by surprise, especially when it came to showing that one of the clues was shown from the very beginning—that was quite impressive to see. Yet the ending seemed to be a little too easy and rushed. And of course I was left wanting more. I really can't believe it's over! I'm going to miss this series and the characters a lot. I still feel like there could be a 4th book. There's still so many more adventures the characters could have! So many more mysteries to solve and maybe in a whole new setting now. One can only hope...

3 STARS FOR "TROUBLE NEVER SLEEPS" BY STEPHANIE TROMLY

The Trouble squad is back for one last adventure as the quest for answers about Digby's sister comes to a close, and Zoe wonders what her acceptance into Prentiss means for the future of her relationship with Digby. Overall, the Trouble series is full of endless fun and entertainment, and scratches that itch for Nancy Drewesque stories. While it didn't quite live up to my expectations, it still had some laugh-out-loud moments that I've come to expect from these characters, and I was glad to have one last book with this crew.

I think my main issue with this conclusion is that I think Tromley's execution of her plot ideas fell flat. The entire series is built around the idea of finding out what really happened to Digby's sister, and while we get all of those answers here, I was left underwhelmed. Digby's reaction to what is revealed wasn't what I expected from him, and he took it surprisingly well considering the implications of what it would mean for him and his family. Overall, I don't think I liked how pretty much any of the characters reacted to the stuff happening in here. When Zoe has the whole school turn against her and slut-shame her for 'stealing' Digby away from his ex-girlfriend, Sloane is really the only one out of her entire group of friends to reach out to her and ask how she's coping with it all. I was blown away by this, especially since she wasn't on bad terms with any of them (except for Digby, who I think still should have reached out). I just found it very weird and it sat funny with me. Additionally, I wasn't sure what to think about the Henry and Sloane drama. It read to me that some girl took advantage of a very drunk and upset Henry at a party (who said he was sleeping), and yet Sloane was punishing him for it? Sloane's character has never been the most empathetic or understanding, but I didn't like the tone and route the book took to that topic, since Henry spends the rest of the novel basically trying to get into Sloane's good graces again. There was a very odd theme of predatory sexual behavior being made light of for jokes, as also seen in scenes where Zoe's being flirted with by an older cop (and instead of being concerned about his girlfriend being around someone who is clearly intending to make a move on an underaged student, Digby instead gets passive aggressive and jealous? What?).

Also, there was some questionable choices made here about some of the jokes being used, mainly a few made by Sloane about school shootings and school violence. I was surprised Tromley's editor didn't pick up on these comments and revise it to something different before this book's publication, especially with all of the intense media coverage these past few months.

On the bright side, I liked the character development for Felix that I found here. I liked seeing a more assertive side of him, where he was still a loyal friend to Digby and crew, but he knew where to draw a line with Digby's antics and recklessness. I also thought that scene with that football player's video being used to detract attention from Zoe was hilarious. The ending left some ends untied, so I definitely would not be opposed to jumping back into this world if Tromley so chooses. Maybe next time we would be inside Henry and Sloane's heads?

I will miss Philip Digby so much! <3 Sigh. This was a much slower read for me, compared to the first two--I basically inhaled those books in a few days. Closure is good, though. Everything and everyone has toned down a lot in the final book. Looking forward to more of Stephanie Tromly's work, that's for sure. :)

Trouble Never Sleeps is a ludicrous conclusion to an outrageous thrilling series, right now I couldn’t ask for anything better except I wouldn’t mind reading more from Planet Digby.

I enjoyed Trouble is a Friend of Mine so much, it pains me to say goodbye to this eccentric gang. Tromly didn’t let the readers down as she incorporated her classic flair for dramatics, controversial take on hot-topic issues, and outrageous sense of humor. It’s nice to see the whole gang Henry, Sloane, Felix join Zoe and Digby as they solve the last piece of Sally’s disappearance. I love that we get to see the whole squad again bickering, and plotting other people’s demise.

ALSO YOOO ROMANCE. It’s even better than the sequel. Shoutout to Zoe’s mom and Cooper for being a great secondary character.

I have nothing else to say except: Earlier this year, I reread the series and listened to the audiobooks and surprise I LOVE IT EVEN MORE. I’m overall just endorsing Trouble Never Sleeps. I might change my review later to 5 stars when I listen to the audiobook. Hah.

(Source: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Penguin Random House, Kathy Dawson Books and Stephanie Tromly.)

So here it is. One last time, from the top. Meaning, we have to go back to the night of Kyle Mesmer’s lake house party.

I loved loved loved loved loved this book and this series in general. It was funny, it was about friendship, love, life, family it was about anything. It was like Harry Potter just not in a wizard world. Just loved everyone and everything about it.

“Digby, I’m running out of polite ways to tell you. I know it’s your favorite song and you thought Zoe should've been going out with you instead of Austin, but not every relationship can be explained by ‘You Belong With Me.’” Felix started opening the tape boxes. “In fact, you guys are more like ‘I Know You Were Trouble.’”

Despite the fact that this one contained more mysteries and thus solutions, I think this one was the most normal one out of them all, if you can even call it that. I laughed a lot, to every reference that was made, Harry Potter, Taylor Swift Kardashians, Archie, Jughead and their squad, etc. I just enjoy how the author brought created so real, flawed and relatable characters.

“Zoe. I spent nine ears looking for a sister everyone else had given up for dead. Do you think I’d give up on you just because you're moving to New York?”

I loved the romance that was there, but did not overlap the actual message of this book. I was happy to see the other characters Henry, Sloane, Felix, and new ones, but I was sad that we did not see much of them, and we did not find out what happened to them. I think we need more of this series, but this time, let it be Henry's and Sloane story.

Overall, this is one of these books that leaves you with a bittersweet feelings, because it ended. I loved it! An amazing read for teens. It was a blast reading this series.

Book three starts right where book two ended. I mean, exactly where it ended. Same night, same situation. You really need to read the entire trilogy in order to understand this series because there is one overarching mystery that runs through all the books and it is finally solved in this concluding volume. If you enjoyed the first two books then you will enjoy this one just as much. It has all the humour and snark that I expected and a fast paced story line. This was a super fun quick read! I read half in one night and the rest the next night. I didn't want to put it down! The situations these kids get themselves into are completely unrealistic and ridiculous but the relationships between them feel authentic and real. I'm sad to see this series end but I'm satisfied in how it concluded.

I received this book for free through a Goodreads Firstreads giveaway but this has not influenced my review in any way.

Aw, man! Stupid me finished the book and thought "Oh joy! There will be more books!" Only to come onto Goodreads and see that this is the conclusion to the trilogy (and, yes, I know that is in the synopsis. As a rule I never read the synopsis of a book right before reading. There be spoilers!). Anyway, now I'm sad because this is the end of the series and I still have questions, but I enjoyed this series immensely. This is one of the very few mystery series that actually made me laugh-out-loud. Even though this is the last book in this series, I very much hope the author will write more books, even if they don't feature Digby and Zoe. I know they're still up to shenanigans somewhere, even if I'm not reading their story.

"When have you ever taken me on a date?" I said.
"What about that time in Olympio's?" he said.
"I paid," I said.
"No. The other time," he said.
"I pay every time," I said.
"And how un-feminist is it to get hung up on who paid?" Digby said.

This is the 3rd book in the trilogy. This is definitely a series you should read in order!
It literally picks up from the moment the previous book left off on which was fine b/c it lead to no loss of the flow in the storyline.

Will there be an HEA for Zoe? Will we find out what happened to Sally? These are the big questions that needed to be answered.

Zoe & Digby have great banter thru their dialogue.
I thought the writer did a great job of wrapping up the series. She answered all the questions and further developed the narratives of the characters.

I'd actually love to read more about these characters. They were captivating. And I enjoyed the stories that I as a reader got pulled into 'Digbyland' along with everyone else.

*FYI: this is a YA series that discussed teen sex in case that's an issue for anyone.*

It has become quite a tradition for me to listen to Trouble series audiobook. I've become a huge fan of the narrator Kathleen McInerney, she really captured what I imagined Zoe's dry wit. I'm so sad to see this series ending, but I'm glad it was a satisfying conclusion to a hysterical saga.

Overall, the plot lacks the usual comical luster that's why it was a 4-star review; however, the romance really took off. As usual readers could expect entertaining drama from Planet Digby. I can't wait to read more of Tromly's work, and to listen to McInerney's YA audiobooks.
