Vein River

Rate this book
The locals of Vein River fear the covered bridge and avoid it at night at all costs.

They say she hangs in the darkness, her long silk nightgown drifting in the breeze. She swings from a noose, her toes rat-tat-tatting across the hood should someone drive beneath her.

As legend goes, if you receive her withering kiss, you either die, get sick, or go stark raving mad. Your only chance of pardon is to kiss her dangling feet and beg for mercy.

The fate of the town rests on the shoulders of Annie Forrester , a sixteen year-old girl with psychic powers. Only Annie will have the strength to enter the bridge and face the evil head on.

Okay, here’s the thing about this book.
I can’t really tell if I liked it a lot or if it was one of those books that I’m going to shove down into oblivion forever, without putting much thought on it, and in a blink of an eye.
It alternated moments of pure genius to incredibly cheesy and laughable scenes, not to mention that the first half of it was quite weak, filled with clichés and overused tropes (seriously Annie? You just got into a new town and you meet your soulmate after 5 seconds flat? And you don’t even have to look for him because he just happens to be the guy who delievers pizzas? How lucky must you be???).
To give you an idea, it reminds me of 90s pseudo-horror teen movies like Urban Legend or the Scream saga, where you have the whole horror and stabby factor without much pretense and with a tad bit teenage heartthrobbing love squeezed in between the murders.
(Actually, why don’t they made it into a movie?
I’d pay big money to see it on the big screen, to be honest.)
So basically, it was more about entertainment than actual literary growth and depth.
But –and it doesn’t pain me to admit it- I found myself incredibly engrossed in the whole mystery storyline so much that I finished this book in one flipping hour. Okay, we’re talking about 200 something pages, here, but still. It’s the thought that counts, right?
I loooooved it. It was so grotesque, dark-toned and it gave me some heebie-jeebies that not even Pennywise Itself could give.

And, I mean…it’s a ghost story, who cares if it’s basically the epitome of everything trope-y and if there’s defcon 5 level insta-love?
I appreciated the multiple POVs and the writing, too. The characters are all nice, not remarkable enough to consider them more than twice, but if there's someone who reaaaaally caught and held my attention, it was Angeline. Ghostly, deadly, poor Angeline who is such a powerful presence (in both senses of the word), in the present and in the past, too. The truth about what happened to her made me super angry, but at the same time, it broke my heart.
It’s such a visual and impactful book and it’s a pity that it didn’t convince me completely. I think it would have been developed better if the author didn’t shrink it all in such a small number of pages.
I've been thinking about the rating I should give to this story for fifteen minutes now, and after a considerate amount of thinking, I decided to give the author some credit because, in the end, her writing rocks and I hope to see more of her work, around.
So yeah, 3 stars.
Also, Angeline and her corpse feeties will give me nightmares for years.

I guess I didn't mind it that much, after all.

Annie Forrester's parents are divorcing and she and her mom are moving to Vein River where they inherited a house from Aunt Ruby.

But all is not as it seems in Vein River as Annie learns that a bridge is being haunted by a girl named Angeline who has the power to suck the life out of people and leave them withered, dead or stark crazy.

Can Annie get to the the bottom of the mystery surrounding Vein River and figure out why Angeline is haunting the bridge?

I really enjoyed this book and the book had me involved from the start to the end.

I liked Annie and knew that there had to be a special reason why Angelina 'reached' out to her and allowed her to figure out what happened. Annie had several close calls and knew that she needed some extra help in figuring things out and I liked that she turned to Widow Jenkins for help.

Copper was interesting for sure as I was shocked at the twist involving him and why he would do that. I get why he did it but I was still shocked that he did. He and Annie were great together so I was surprised that he was willing to risk it.

There were a few characters that met some justified ends which kind of made me laugh and I loved Charles Oates!! I thought what he did on the bridge was totally awesome and I laughed for sure!

I loved how everything turned out and I was super happy for Annie with getting through it all.

This was the first time I have read this author and it won't be my last!

This is not normally the type of book I would pick up and read. I am so glad I did. The story pulls you in from the beginning. Annie is a 16 year old girl trying to come to terms with the recent events that has happened to her family. It’s because of this events that she moves to the town of Vein River with her mother. There she meets a Copper, and his friends. She learns of an urban legend of a young girl who haunts a bridge. If you see her you are cursed. Many members of this town are plagued by this curse. After some scares and some events happen, Annie believes the curse is real. Annie and the help of a few others set out to find out what really happened to this girl.
The mystery of the urban legend and mystery of what happened that faithful night, kept me reading. I was so captivated. I had to keep reading. I was not disappointed.

The book starts off in a typical young adult fashion, but quickly pulls you in. The story itself is dark and mysterious and combines some of the best elements of the horror and mystery genres together. The characters are well developed and I do like that there is a contrast in personalities even though it is set in a small town. Often times, it is easy for stories to give similar personality traits to multiple characters in such a close setting, but the author does a fantastic job at making sure every character is unique.
There are some very graphic details towards the end of the story that really cement the fact that this is a horror novel above all else. Overall, this was well worth the read and the author does a great job at creating a story that I don't think I will soon forget.

This book automatically pulls one into the story. From the beginning, the author establishes the mystery behind the legend of the ghost that haunts the bridge. It's a passionate, intense story that kept me guessing throughout the read. The mystery of Angelina was heartwarming and I couldn't help but feel intense sorrow for her character. Honaker does an amazing job at creating a story that will not leave anyone disappointed. I can honestly say this was one of the best books I have read on a whim in a long time. Five stars is well deserved.

Loved this story. Told from multiple view points it reads like a good horror movie and some of the twists were really surprising! Only thing that let it down was how the main characters relationship suddenly went from 0-100 near the end. Just didn’t make sense that she “loved” him after three dates.

I really enjoyed this for the most part. It's October and I wanted a ghost story and this is a good one. The only thing I had a problem with was the "why" the haunting was happening. It was a little bit too graphic for me but others might not have a problem with it.

For those who want to know: This one has some language, violence and mature content (toward the end).

I expected to find a completely horrific read from beginning to end but what I found was so much more than that. I was captured by the storyline and I felt like I was right there experiencing what the characters were. I went from being scared to crying as the horrifying truth of Angeline was revealed. Be prepared to ignore any plans you have because once you start to read Vein River; you won't want to put it down. -The Voluptuous Book Diva

I like reading good horror novels so this one turned out to be a fairly good and scary read. Annie moves with her mother in a quiet town over Vein River with a haunted bridge. The ghost in question is Angelina - a scary apparition that makes the lives of people crossing the bridge at night, a living hell. But what exactly is the story behind the haunting? How is Angelina related to Annie? And can Annie save the town from the wrath of a vengeful ghost? Warning: Contains some graphic scenes towards the end.
