Beartown by Fredrik Backman | Conversation Starters

Beartown is a town just about to be condemned to insignificance. It’s economy has been stagnant for years and people are slowly leaving for better opportunities outside. It has one more chance to redeem itself though. It’s junior hockey team has made it to the semifinals. Victory for the team means more jobs and economic opportunities for the town. But Kevin, its 17-year-old star player is being blamed for the assault on a 15-year-old girl who happens to be the daughter of the team’s general manager. Victory is at stake, and so is the whole town’s future. Can the town go beyond its mob thinking and sports fanaticism to deal with the crisis?

Loved this book and thought it much better than "A Man Called Ove." The story has a lot of characters mostly connected with hockey. Bear Town is a hockey town and the intrigue heightens between people vying for the coaches job, teenage rape, and the courage of people to come forward when it meant betraying a best friend. Kept me engrossed until the end.

This novel by the author of “a man called Ove” was a very different story. It takes place in a frozen rural town that loves their hockey team. How this effects the various citizens and youth of the city creates a fascinating tale of personalities and human dynamics.I pretty much couldn’t put this down.

The characters found in this little hockey town are not charicatures; they have depth; volume; subtlety. This book is sublime.

Same Author as 'Man Called One'. This one is not laugh out loud funny but amusing humor. Centers around a small hockey town and the player, coaches and their families and how winning over rides all else and the effects these choices have on all living in the town. Characters are well developed.
