The Christmas Shift

Rate this book
Lisa Vaughn has had a crappy month, and the cherry on top is that she's stuck in the hospital, alone, on Christmas. Bah-freaking-humbug.

Matthew Weiss is a busy trauma surgeon who always volunteers to work Christmas. He doesn't have a family waiting for him, and he's not the girlfriend type. That doesn't mean it's not a pain, especially when he keeps getting paged to evaluate his one patient who has a smart mouth. A sharp, sarcastic, smart mouth...that for some reason he can't stop staring at. Oh, yes, there are a few things he could imagine doing with that mouth...

This is a sexy short story with enough steam to keep you warm on Christmas! No cheating, no cliffhangers, HEA guaranteed!

Hi! I'm a 20/30-something new indie writer! I've been a big reader since I was young and eventually decided to just start writing the stories I wanted to read, just to keep up with my own demand! I'm hoping some of you will be interested in my stories as well. In fact, I'd love to know what you want to read, because I want to deliver it!

When I'm not typing away I'm reading, running, planning travel, watching a comedy special, or working at my day job doing something in healthcare.

Lisa Vaughn could not appreciate the beautiful snow and lights outside the window. It looked like she would be spending Christmas in the hospital. She had been rear-ended on the way to the airport to fly to her parents’ house for Christmas. With two broken ribs, she wasn’t going anywhere now.

Dr. Matthew Weiss, a trauma surgeon, was working over the holidays, with a long list of patients to see. Since he had no family waiting for him, he offered to cover at the hospital over Christmas. The problem was that patients were more needy at this time of year. They wanted his company, someone to talk to.

The nurse paged him that Lisa Vaughn’s heart rate was high, blood pressure low, yet she was just sitting quietly in a chair! So Matt had to follow protocol and check on the situation – even though he had hardly made any progress on his rounds due to all the delays. Lisa was sullen and acted completely disinterested in everything. She didn’t want more drugs for the pain, not liking the effect the narcotics had on her. So he prescribed IV Ibuprofen instead and left the room.

But Lisa had not been as lethargic as she appeared. She was fully aware of “Dr. Gorgeous” and his attributes. But before the accident, she had walked in on her boyfriend having sex with his boss! Then they posted on social media that they were engaged already! That hurt more than the painful broken ribs! But at least when Dr. Gorgeous was around, brief as that time was, she had been able to forget about Ethan.

Matt found his thoughts going back to Lisa, despite being busy dealing with patients. He could not get his mind off of her? The nurse spotted him, saying she was just about to page him about Lisa again. She was not taking deep breaths as she should, she was not moving around, and she had needed oxygen to prevent any problems. She also refused pain medicine. So Matt headed back to her room.

This time, Lisa was dreaming about him. He woke her and she was confused, then started lightly flirting with him. It made her feel better to have his attention on her. At least this would be a Christmas to remember, wouldn’t it?

This was a very different story than I had expected. It made me feel very sorry for the hospital personnel who had to deal with patients who wouldn’t cooperate on their treatment. But that wasn’t the point of the story. I didn’t really like the characters all that much since neither behaved very well until Matt finally talked with her to help her deal with the really bad time she had been having. But then she made him an offer and I didn’t like him again. There just didn’t seem to be a whole lot of “joy” in the story, but you might want to check it out yourself and see what you think about it! I voluntarily reviewed this book.

A quick fun holiday read with lots of hot chemistry between Lisa and her doctor Matthew during Xmas holiday in hospital. It is very compelling to read and I recommend it as I enjoyed it. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
