What a mysterious and action packed Book! This Cinderella Retelling is nothing like you've ever read before, it is packed with so many fairytale creatures, both good and bad which makes an awesome and amazing mix to this unique story

Along with Cendrilla, or Rilla, we encounter, trolls and orgres, witches and magic all around. We all see Puss in boots, Jack, the one with the beanstalk and so much more! This book is fun, creative and exciting the whole way through!

Rilla has been a slave to her stepmother and stepsisters for all her life. Fed up with all the insults about her extreme height and clumsiness, she longs to escape. But before that plan takes place, she is sold like a market animal to Lord Bluebeard, a man rumoured to be a half orgre and who has killed all of his 6 wives after he has taken their fortune. And Rilla is next!

Desperate to escape her fate, she flees with Jack, a slave of Bluebeard. Together they flee to where the palace is, as no magical creatures are allowed into the area, and if they do, it is punishable by death.
But before they come to this place, they will face many dangers and deadly encounters with creatures of the forest. People who will harm them and do whatever they can to get their reward if they are both brought back to Bluebeard.
With spies everywhere and dangers lurking, it seems impossible that they will escape. Do they really have a chance?

Loved this book, such a great introduction to a series. I can already tell it will be action based and it will be a great ride to be on. Can't wait to read more!

Received a copy from the author, for an honest review, thank you!

This book is great for young readers. If you like a twist in fairy tales you should enjoy this book. There are a few characters that interact with Rilla, the main character, which are given a twist as well. She lives in a land that magic and magical creatures are killed just for existing. You could say Rilla is like Cinderella but is sold to a half-ogre as his bride. She escapes from the ogre with Jack, a slave, and they run for their lives. A must read to find out what happens when the interact with other characters like puss and the rat catcher.

Freaking twisted Cinderella, anyone?
Cendrilla, or Rilla for short, was living with her stepmother Candide and two stepsisters as a servant and the butt of every joke, not only due to her height and stature. However, she survived finely, until a day everything changed and she was sold out to Lord Bluebeard, a half ogre and foreign ambassador with lethal reputation. Afraid of her life, Rilla escapes his household accompanied by Jack, the ogre killer enslaved. On the run, she is gifted a powerful enchanted weapon - the magestaff. And so her adventure begins.
I can't remember when was the last time I enjoyed a twisted spin of a classic fairytale this much. Rilla becomes quite the force to be reckoned with during her travels, and uncovering the magical world of the Seven Kingdoms and the Enchanted Forest is magical and fantastic on its own. For the world setup alone I would have enjoyed the book.
Nevertheless, it was enhanced by a great and fast developing plot, sometimes truly surprising, and awesome characters. Rilla is an outstanding heroine, and I do not refer only to her height. She is considerate and kind hearted, with high morals and strong will. She is the survivor, and her talents slowly transform her into a truly badass heroine as she makes herself in tune with her staff. Jack is a sweet companion, although maybe a bit pushy when it comes to his romantic interest, and Lord Bluebeard is a villain you can only pray for - complicated, mysterious, and deadly. To understand his motives is a challenge, and to know his past and his background is worth a serious investigation.
If you really search for a suspenseful, magical, and action-packed read, then you should definitely grab this book and start to read the series.

I am so happy Cendrilla was rewritten and is now The Magestaff. I wanted to like Cendrilla but I didn’t. This version is so much better then the original!

Cendrilla was much more believable in this book. She actually had depth which I don’t think she had in the first version. I’ve never liked Jack and still don’t. Pansy is the word that comes to mind. Not a very flattering word but that’s the best word I can think of. I wish he would’ve grown as a character. I wish he could’ve been more on Rilla’s level. She was SO strong and he was not. Yes he’s been through hell and back and I’m all for the woman to be stronger then the man and the man to have a vulnerable side but the majority of the time I felt like Jack was very young or naive and it just wasn’t a good look.

Note: Most of my reviews focus mainly on the characters but that’s pretty much what makes or breaks a book for me. If the characters have no depth or personality then why am I reading a book about them?

I received a free advanced copy of this book and voluntarily gave a review. (shout out to Hidden Gems)

I do not believe that I have read another book quite like this one. Not only is it a retelling of Cinderella - it has its twists! This book is a strong start of a series. I look forward to continuing it.

Unlike a majority of young adult books these days, this book does not revolve around a love triangle. Instead, the focus of the book is Cendrilla (Rilla) and her character development. It was refreshing to read a story with a strong female heroine that doesn’t need a man to fight her battles.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in fantasy and young adult novels.

This is not a direct fairy-tale adaptation, but is rather set in a fairy-tale land where you are always coming across elements very reminiscent of old stories. The world of these stories is of course fraught with dangers, and in this version there is no guarantee of any happy ever after. Case in point: I bet you thought that after Jack chopped down the beanstalk everything was tickety-boo, but for the Jack who is the heroine's companion for much of the story it was a disaster.

As for the heroine, Cendrilla, she has the wicked stepmother and cruel stepsisters and even ends up going to a ball and meeting a prince, but what comes in between is a parade of unpleasant encounters and not one fairy godmother. (Unpleasant, that is, for her - pretty exciting for the reader.) The titular magestaff, a gift for an act of kindness, is a quarterstaff with the ability to make her unbeatable in combat, and so she becomes quite an accomplished champion of justice. I suspect more will be revealed about the magestaff in future books.

The writing is strong and descriptive and the various threads are deftly woven together. There is almost too much going on, with no truly restful interludes, and many "oh, no!" moments. I expect there will be romance later in the series, but there was very little in this book, and that one-sided. It makes a fine young adult read and has attractions for all fairy-tale fantasy lovers. For those that love this type of story, I can also recommend Starla Huchton's Flipped Fairy Tales.

Cendrilla Perrault - an amazing adventure

Rilla has been nothing more than a slave all her life. She has to endure constant humiliation. And then her stepmother sells her to a wife-killing half-ogre (Bluebeard) to be married. But before the marriage can take place, she escapes, together with Jack. It’s a cruel world where the rich and unscrupulous have all the power and the laws are unfair to say the least. Magic is not allowed and punishable by death. Rilla comes in possession of the Magestaff. Powerless no longer, she embarks on a fantastical adventure. Rilla is likeable, compassionate and becomes stronger and stronger during all the trials and tribulations.

I loved it. It was an amazing book. Very eventful. Well-written. Unexpected twists and turns make this fast-paced story surprising. A real page-turner. Just oooooone more chapter… oh, I’m already well into the next :)

It’s part 1 of a series. In part 2 Rilla’s adventures will continue. I can’t wait!

DNF @ 60%.

This isn't that bad or anything, but I put it down several days ago and haven't picked it back up. Also, I really, really hate Jack. He's the worst character ever. Complete and utter deadweight for Rilla, yet she keeps helping him? Not sure why.

Beyond that, the writing style isn't working all that well for me. The third person narration is keeping me kind of separate from the characters.

Also, I did pick this up due to wanting to read the spinoff series about Rilla's stepdaughter, who's got a dragon rider academy/princess thing going on. So I more want to read that than nine (9!) books about Rilla.

However, I did like how all of the fairy tales were intertwined. That was quite cool.

So, nice fairy tale intertwining, but I hate Jack and the writing style is keeping me separate from the characters. The actual plot is fine, as is Rilla. So not bad, but not really clicking with me. 2.5 stars.

Some grammar issues, but a nice read. Women are treated like property in the book, but it is necessary for the story line.

For my clean readers: language-only one word. Violence-abduction, attempted rape, fighting, and threats of torture through animal cruelty(raising beasts to kill people). Romance-one or two quick and chaste kisses, though the bad guys consistently talk or refer to rape and describing the main character's body in a salacious manner.

I normally love the twist on a Cinderella story, but this one fell just a little bit flat. Honestly, I think the evil cat had the most personality out of everyone in this story, with the magical staff being a close second. I kept being told who these characters were, but their actions never quite seemed to back it up.

This book used to be named Cendrilla, and I reviewed it before. Now, this is a fully redone version, with a new name, and I fell in love with it even more! Watch out for its release on March 15!

Rilla is sixteen years old, six feet tall, and has lived with her stepmother and stepsisters for several years. These years have been the worst of her life, and she hopes to be able to escape someday. When Lord Bluebeard comes calling, she prays that he is not interested in any of them. Bluebeard's reputation for killing his wives and beating his servants frighten her to pieces. When she is bought from her stepmother as his betrothed, she knows that she will have to escape before their wedding. She meets a servant named Jack, and the two of them escape. However, now they are fully in the magical world with creatures of all sorts.

I absolutely adore Rilla, and as a fellow tall girl, I can deal with some of her struggles. I might not be 6 feet tall, but at 5'9"/5'10" I am still pretty high on the height scale. This story really makes girls who are tall feel like they can be the heroes, rather than just petite, dainty princesses.

Also, the story is amazing. I love it simply because the action scenes are amazing, the worldbuilding really drew me in, and I got to become more connected to Rilla in her backstory. This extra time spent worldbuilding might have only seemed like a small thing, but it made the entire story for me.

Not to mention, this story is a fairytale retelling clearly. However, it does not just stick to the fairytales of Cinderella and Bluebeard. I won't spoil anything but expect to see a lot when you read this one. As a person who used to love reading the old "Blue Fairy Book" fairytales when I was younger, this became a treasure hunt of sorts for me. I hope it works the same for you!

I would recommend this to anyone looking for an action-adventure fantasy novel with a unique female main character, fairytales, and magic.

A thrilling start

I really enjoyed reading this book. Rilla is sold to the evil and treacherous Lord Bluebeard, discovers it means her fate has been sealed. This leads on to an epic journey to as she tries to escape a tragic ending. Magic is involved, and the characters in this come to life. Would recommend to readers that enjoy stories about kick butt females and epic adventure.

Combining elements of Cinderella, Bluebeard, Jack & the Beanstalk, as well as others, The Magestaff was a fast-paced action filled fairy tale mash up that I just couldn't put down! (Slight spoilers ahead)

The Magestaff begins based loosely on the story of Cinderella: Cendrilla, our heroine, has a step-mother who has stolen her inheritance, and is trying to marry off the two step-sisters (similar to other versions of the fairy tale), but that is where the story ends. Here, Cendrilla, is sold by her step-mother as a bride to Lord Bluebeard, a half-ogre ambassador in a land where anything magical is illegal. Shortly before her wedding, Cendrilla runs away with the help of Jack, a slave who had killed Bluebeard's giant half-brother. On the way to the capital, Rilla is given the Magestaff, which allows her to fight off many enemies, human and non-human, allowing her to become "Warrior Woman" (as she is eventually known as). Although Rilla does make it to the capital, she is followed by her (unwanted) fiance, Bluebeard. The book ends on a slight cliff-hanger, with Cendrilla being conscripted into the army's academy, and Lord Bluebeard plotting to get her back.

The Magestaff is actually a reworked, lengthened version of a previously published story, titled Cendrilla. (I did not read the previous version, and so cannot make any comparisons. My understanding is this has changed considerably from the original version, though.) I loved how the different elements of the various fairy tales were intertwined. I can't wait to read the next installment, and see which fairy tales are next to be included in the world and adventure!

“Sighing, Rilla opened Jack’s knapsack. He was right, of course. Perhaps a lifetime of being blamed for everything that went wrong at home had done more damage to her than she realized.”

This retelling of Cinderella, part of Cordelia Castel’s Perrault Chronicles, is a “fleshed out” version of the first “Cendrilla” that I recently read. Cendrilla is the orphan who lives with her stepmother and stepsisters and is treated as a servant and waits on them hand and foot, not knowing that she actually owns the whole nine yards that is held in trust until she comes of age, and since her Stepmother is using her inheritance to live on and spoil her daughters, they keep her around. Until ...

Lord Bluebeard comes and virtually purchases her from them for more money than anyone’s seen, and drags her off to his palace where she escapes with the house slave Jack. Helping others along the way makes friends and gives her a sense of purpose as well as “The Magestaff” given to her as a thank you from one of those she helps. The Magestaff gives her even more confidence as she heads towards the City, thinking she can hide out until she comes of age....

Bluebeard is not giving up. He seeks to find her to his own ends. Will he? Is Cenrella’s new confidence a good thing or a bad thing? Will she find safety or not? You just have to keep reading the Perrault Chronicles and find out. Highly recommended. 5/5

This is a very enjoyable twist on the fairy tales we have come to know and love. Cendrilla, or “Rilla”, is dreaming of the handsome gentlemen. The kindly footman reminds her to serve the tea and she can see the gentlemen then. Unfortunately, because of her 6-foot height, Mr. Engel was repeatedly very insulting to her. Not willing to cry, she mustered her dignity and left the room. But her mother followed and told her the “gentlemen” wanted to talk to her! So she returned for further humiliation.

Rilla went down to the kitchen and grabbed her hidden coins. This time, she was leaving. Mr. Engel made it clear she would not be allowed to stay when he married Gabrielle and moved in. But cook told her she was the real heiress to the manor, grounds, and the vault – everything was hers. The only way the hateful Mr. Engel will own it all is to marry Rilla! Her best bet would be to go talk to the bishop. But nothing is ever easy, and Rilla eventually must run when her evil step-mother sells her in marriage to a dangerous murderer. Will she survive all the creatures out there? Will she regain what is hers?

Wait until you see all the characters that Rilla meets! This book is so well written and enjoyable! Read about her exploits and find out what’s waiting for her!

The Magestaff, formerly Cendrilla in the Perrault Chronicles, is the first book in this enchanting series. Castel has outdone herself with this fantastical world and in-depth character. I'm in love!

First, our main character is Cendrilla, or Rilla to her friends. She is tall, taller than your average young lady, which causes her serious emotional grief. People are not kind to her because she looks so "different." When she is "sold off" under the guise of being betrothed to Lord Bluebeard, her adventure starts.

Lord Bluebeard has rumors flying around him and Rilla falls prey to those rumors. What truly happened to his previous wives? Did he murder them? You'll have to keep reading to find out!

Rilla embarks on a dangerous journey to escape possible death at the hands of Lord Bluebeard and encounters many magical beings along the way. Throughout this journey, Rilla begins to learn about herself and her own self-worth.

Obviously, this is the first book in the series, so there is most definitely a cliff-hanger ending. Keep reading to find out how Rilla continues on this path and whether she falls prey to Lord Bluebeard himself.

This is a retelling of Cinderella’s story, but very different except for the wicked “mother” and stepsisters. After suffering six long years of abuse, sixteen-year-old Cendrilla “Rilla” Perrault’s mother sells her to Lord Blackbeard to be his bride. There are rumors about Lord Blackbeard’s cruelty and brutality and they are all true. After Rilla escapes with Jack from Lord Blackbeard’s mansion, she meets many different characters, some of them from other fairy tales. While trying to avoid Lord Blackbeard’s minions, Rilla and Jack must deal with thugs, ogres, trolls, witches, talking animals, and more. There is adventure, danger, suspense, and magic in this story, but through it all you see Rilla’s kindness and how she tries to help anyone in trouble, regardless of the consequences she may face because of her actions. With a cliff hanger ending, I want to read the next book in this series to see what happens next in Rilla’s life. I received an advance reader copy of this book and this is my honest review.

This new first book in the Perrault Chronicles series is an excellent read, and so different from the original book that it's like a whole new story. I like the interweaving of so many fairytale characters throughout - such as Puss in Boots (a new character this edition), the Gingerbread Man (here as the johnnycake boy) etc, not to mention Cendrilla herself, based on Cinderella! - and look forward to seeing who else Cendrilla will encounter as her adventures continue.
I've really enjoyed reading this book as it's well-written, full of action, adventure, and the great characters really drive the pace and keep you hooked from beginning to end. I'm definitely going to continue reading the rest of the series, and would recommend the stories to anyone who likes their adventures with a fantasy and fairytale twist.
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions

Great mashup of Fairy Tales!

If you like fairy tales, but don't want the same boring stories, read this! You start with what seems like a Cinderella/Beauty & the Beast story, but it RAPIDLY jumps track and careens into a fairy tale mob. I spent a LOT of time trying to guess what stories were getting drug in and it seemed seamless, not forced. I can't wait to dig into the next one!

First, I would like to mention that I recieved and reviewed an ARC copy of 'The Magestaff.'

'The Magestaff' is the first book in the series 'Perrault Chronicles' following the misadventures of the main character, Cendrilla Perrault. It starts as a seamless blending of the fairy tales Cinderella and Bluebeard, but, as the story progresses, elements of other fairy tales are beautifully intertwined. Through the course of the book, Rilla learns how to take her life into her own hands and stand-up for herself, as well as for others. However, as her adventure continues, the more questions arise about her circumstances, her life, and even who (or perhaps what) she really is. It's set in the Seven Kingdoms where anything magical is outlawed but, try as she might, she can't avoid it.

I very much enjoyed reading about Rilla and look forward to learning more about her!

This book is based loosely on the story of Cinderella in the fact that the main character Cendrilla lives with her evil stepmother and stepsisters, with elements of other fairy tales thrown in . Magestaff is a revamped and lengthened rerelease of the originally titled Cendrilla, part of Cordelia Castel’s Perrault Chronicles. After Cendrilla Perrault’s stepmother sells her to Lord Bluebeard, a wife killing ogre of a man she flees along with a magical staff to get away from him. But will she be able to reach the Anti-Magic Capital’s city walls before he catches up with her. I read the original title Cendrilla and enjoyed it then, but Magestaff is so much more! I enjoyed every minute of it, and the new cover is stunning and definitely gives more of a feel to what the story is about! If you enjoyed the original story then please go back and give the revamped version a read!

I received this book free of charge, and provide my review voluntarily.

The Magestaff is a quick and easy read. Ms. Castel wastes no time preparing her reader for what is going to happen, instead basically jumping feet first straight into the story. I like this style, as it allows for more twists and surprising developments. The character development and growth (for Rilla, at least) is excellent. The other characters are allowed to languish somewhat, but at this point, it hardly matters, as Rilla is the driving force of the story. I appreciate the fact that there is no romantic motivation to Rilla's actions. She's allowed to be motivated by monetary gain, vengeance, and ambition, as well as kindness and honor. This is one of my favorite things about The Magestaff, and has me anxious to read the next book in the series.

Magic, magical creatures, villains and heroes of both sexes. I like how we follow Rilla as she finds out things and tries to make her life better. A different twist on the Cinderella story but well done. I like how the author brought in other stories and weaved them into this one so it fit well. Some twist and turns that made the story more interesting. Didn’t want to stop reading till got to the end. Only down side we are left wondering till the next book what happens with Rilla. I really don’t know how to say it ended as don’t want to do spoilers, yet I felt that I would say there was an ending for now but not the end of her story. Overall a story that pull you in and feel for the heroes and hope the villains get what they deserve. I did receive an ARC from Hidden Gems for an honest review.

I loved this story. It is fabulously written and has a superb flow to it. I loved how strong and independent Rilla was. I love the twists and turns to this story that make it different from the normal typical "Cinderella" stories. You can feel the love that went into writing this book. Oh and without giving anything away I loved the twist that came at the end of the book. This has a little drama, action, suspense, and just a little love in it. This is a must read and you just can't put it down until you reach the end. Loved, it very much. Can't wait for the second part of the story to come out. On the one hand, Cordelia Castel’s The Magestaff (The Seven Kingdoms Book 1) is very loosely based on the classic Cinderella tale (with a bit of Bluebeard thrown in). On the other hand that’s a totally unfair description of this story. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved Cinderella, but she just doesn’t rock like Cendrilla Perrault, the kick-a** star of this book. Full of magic and mayhem, action and adventure, thrilling twists and turns, this is one heck of a story - and one I’m happy to recommend.

Lately I'd read some new versions of my favorite fairytale, Cinderella, of course.
This version is really full of surprises! A Cendrilla that is a strong character, never a victim but someone that fights against opressors and tyrants. Also in this book anyone who loves fairytales could recognize some characters from other beloved tales: Jack, from Jack and the Beanstalk, the Puss in boots (without boots, in this case), the infamous Bluebeard, who wants to force Rilla into marriage...
I really loved this book and can't wait to read the full series! A must read for everyone!
