Sam Callahan #3

Hunt the Lion

Rate this book
It’s the most important mission of his life — because it’s the most personal.

Once a key player in a clandestine CIA squad, Sam Callahan thought he had finally found a safe, normal life as a rookie lawyer in DC with the woman he loves. But when called to a covert intelligence mission in the heart of Russia, he can’t refuse risking it all once more. This time, he’d be joining his estranged father, the Lion, a deep-cover agent Sam never even knew existed.

When the operation goes wrong and his team is ambushed, Sam fears a setup. At least he escaped with his life. And so did his father. But why? With a target on his back, he must hunt down the truth behind the betrayal in Moscow — and find the Lion again.

Now, crisscrossing Europe under the cover of shadow, Sam is about to come face-to-face with his past — and it’s never looked so dangerous.

To kick things off in grand style, the author flung me into a heart-pounding escape through the unfamiliar streets of Moscow. There was little time to catch a breath. The world's most notorious assassin, the Gray Wolf had a job to finish - covert-operative, Sam Callahan. Be forewarned, this CIA thriller comes with a knockout punch.

Reluctantly, Sam found himself part of a clandestine CIA operation in the former Soviet Republic. The plan was to steal some vital data from a well-guarded mansion and then get out of Dodge. He swore to himself it would be the last mission. Those very words had been uttered before.

On the other side of the globe, his fiancée, Natalie, had been nervously pacing the floors. For the first time in his life, Sam found someone who meant everything in the world to him. He was painfully aware that taking on this secretive operation would be putting their relationship at great risk. In over his head, he admonished himself for accepting this perilous assignment.

For a full month before heading to Russia, Sam had trained in a nondescript warehouse in preparation for code name, Black Heron. An exact replica of the targeted mansion that he was to break into had been constructed inside it. By the time he was ready to leave, he knew every square inch of the dwelling. He was well aware that training and actually being there would be entirely two different things. For one, at his real target, there would be armed, well-trained security guards that would not welcome his trespass. They wouldn't hesitate to shoot on sight.

The team of Spooks assembled in Moscow. It was zero hour and time for Sam to put his training to work. If ever anything could go so terribly wrong - it did. The operation turned into a complete disaster. The entire CIA team that had been monitoring Sam's every move had been wiped out. They had been gunned down in what was supposed to be a safe house, save one, Marcus Pelini, the team leader.

Sam barely made it out of the fortress in one piece. He had come under heavy fire and was now literally running for his life. At the time, he was unaware that his team had been murdered. Now, there was no one to fall back on. What seemed like the worst tragedy turned out to be just the tip of the iceberg. The storyline shifted into overdrive.

The fuse had been lit. From this moment on, the well-written escapade took an amazing twist that propelled Sam into some of the most dreadful, life-altering state of affairs that anyone could possibly find themselves in. It was the worst of times.

The narrative took a chilling 180 degree turn that grilled out some of the most stomach-wrenching scenes imaginable. By this time, putting the Kindle down was no longer an option. The pages swiped by in blinding speed. A dramatic ending that I never saw coming came at me with a mighty roar. It's guaranteed to knock you off your seat.

Now it's time to get down to the nitty-gritty. When it comes to CIA series, the most memorable ones to me were the Mitch Rapp series written by the immortal, late Vince Flynn. I've not found a writer of his caliber until I had the good fortune to stumble upon this exciting novel by Chad Zunker. Keep an eye out for him. He's a talent to be reckoned with in the near future, actually, make that now. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone seeking an adrenaline-filled ride of your life. Buckle up.

I send my gratitude to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.

An intriguing spy thriller as Sam Callahan is back , not big into his law practice as he wanted to be, but saying yes to another mission with his long lost father. With his investigative reporter girlfriend in the dark, Sam starts a 'quick' plan to assist the CIA. He is in Russia, doing his part when when there are several large leaks and the whole team is found murdered in the safe house except for his father. He is missing and Sam has to use all his street smarts and skill through several countries while hunted by a never say die assassin!
Sam is hunting for the truth and trying to find his father, the Lion, again. Afraid to check on his girlfriend, he has no idea that she is going through a disturbing affair herself! The fast paced action with wonderful characters spurs you to keep reading, as you feel love, fear, and friendship in scenes that you are in, right beside Sam as he spies a young boy after breaking into the target house and helping him back to bed, thinking the boy reminds him of himself when he was younger..
The story is enthralling, and added enjoyment when the girlfriend has to get out of a tough situation that she is in, using what Sam has taught her with great results!
I received an ARC of this story from Netgalley and author Chad Zunker, who I thank for a marvelous adventure, and I am able to put my thoughts in this review so others may experience this wonderful story!

'Hunt the Lion' (Book #3/3 of the Sam Callahan series) was the most exciting and heart-rending (IMO) of the series so far. Full of nonstop rollercoaster free-falls from start to finish - and every character (protagonists) finds themselves running for their lives while being chased by unknown entities for reasons they do not understand. Sam also learns a lot of familial surprises at the end which causes him uncertainty and serious pause for reflection about what he wants for his future career - will he continue the deep underground work his father brought him into, and if so, at what cost? Also, how will his decision(s) effect his relationships and future with his beloved new bride, Natalie? Family? Longtime, loyal friends? Looking forward to finding out how it plays out for all of them...

Narrator Noah Berman has been phenomenal throughout all 3 books - and in this episode he had to do many dialects which were incredibly well done and made the plot come to life in a way that reading wouldn't do (for me personally). Much sincere thanks for the many hours of authentic listening enjoyment!

On the upside, Sam, Natalie, and Tommy/Mav are back!! On the downside, I was a bit disappointed in this book, though. It felt a wee bit too Mission Impossible to me. However, if there is a #4 book, I'll be in line to read it!

I have nothing but great things to say about the Sam Callahan series and Chad Zunker! I really hope that Chad continues writing about Sam's journey and adventures. Hunt the Lion is the third book in the Sam Callahan series and it did not disappoint. Another action-packed, suspenseful book, that had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Like Shadow Shepherd, Hunt the Lion is told in the third person and allows readers to see other character's points of view and follow them through their investigations; while still getting to read about Sam and his mission. I would definitely recommend this book to others, along with the rest of the series. You will not be disappointed!

****

Picking up a month after Shadow Shepherd, Sam has agreed to assist in a classified mission, with the CIA and his long lost father, Marcus Pelini, in Moscow. Natalie, Sam's fiancee, and his best friend, Tommy, have been kept in the dark about Sam's mission, to protect them.
During the middle of the mission, Sam's team is compromised and most have been killed. Sam immediately finds himself on the run again. With nowhere to turn, Sam looks to Tommy for help and the two of them soon are on the hunt to find Sam's missing team members and get answers. They soon find themselves being chased not only by Russian assassins but also by Gray Wolf, the world's most notorious assassin. Sam and Tommy search for answers, the actual truth, and Sam's father, all while trying not to get killed.
Meanwhile, Natalie soon realizes that Sam has lied to her and is in great danger. Natalie begins her own investigation into Sam and his mission and soon finds herself in danger as well.

Sam Callahan, CIA Agent and now apparent traitor to the U.S. Have you ever meet the gray wolf? Are you running from the gray wolf? What does Charlie have to do with all this?
"Hunt the Lion"is an adventure that, takes you across the cities of London and Moscow. Just when Sam thought they had succeeded in the mission in Moscow, everyone in the local Safe House is killed and Sam is thrust into the fight of his very life. As if, scaling a ten story building was hard as it is.
Good will hunting meets the Bourne identity.-Fred Burton-
Natalie, a reporter from the District of Colombia is thrown into danger when her husband is being hunted by an international assassin bent on finishing a job that was started a long time ago.
In my own opinion, there are so many secrets in this story, sometimes it was hard keeping up with everything. The plot is so thought out, when you think you have solved the plot, Chad Zunker throws you for a twist you didn't see coming. "Hunt the Lion," is a story for young adults and up.

Sad the series is over

Excellent series! Sam Callahan is a bada*s! What a guy! Poor thing never has a dull moment! I loved every book, action from beginning to end!
July 29, 2018
I was lucky enough to receive a copy of Hunt the Lion from the author, Chad Zunker, before it was published. All I had to do was give an honest review of the book. I was very happy about that since I have read both of the previous Sam Callahan books and thoroughly enjoyed them. I hoped that this new book would be as enjoyable.
It definitely is! At the opening of the book, we learn that Sam has finished law school and joined a firm. However, he is again involved in some covert intelligence activities, though he has doubts about his decision. Because this is Sam, of course things don’t go as planned. What ensues is a multi-country trip to try and get to the bottom of what is going on. As in previous books, Sam ends up as a target and has to use the street skills he developed on the streets as a homeless teenager. I don’t want to get into too many details since part of the fun of reading these books is to never know what is going to happen next.
Hunt the Lion is an exciting page-turner that I read in just a few days. I had to stop when life interfered. The characters that the author has created are well-formed, with personalities that you can identify with. This book continues that kind of writing.
If you haven’t read Chad Zunker’s previous books, I recommend that you do so. Hunt the Lion can be read on its own but since there are continuing characters besides Sam Callahan, the whole story will make much more sense if you read them in sequence.
Do yourself a favor and buy this book. You will provide yourself with several hours of enjoyment.

Hunt the Lion, book 3 with main protagonist, Sam Callahan, is another rousing adventure with non-stop action and thrills. I found myself once again holding my breath as Sam tries to stay alive as he races away from danger at every turn.

This book finds Sam in Russia on another mission to secure a list from a high profile Russian. What he finds is not what he expected. He escapes being captured but when he returns to the safe house where the other operatives he worked with, he finds them all dead. Sam is once again on a race to find out what went wrong and who is responsible if he can only stay alive to do that.

This is another exciting adventure that will keep you glued to the pages. There is another book in this series that I look forward to reading soon.

An adventurous and enjoyable read that I recommend for those who love action, suspense and mystery with a strong protagonist.

I was lucky enough to be chosen, among others, to receive an advance copy of the 3rd installment of the Sam Callahan thrillers, Hunt The Lion. All that was asked of me in return, was to give an honest review. And I honestly have to say: if you do not purchase this book as quickly as possible, then you are missing out on one of the best series I have come across, and definitely one of the best writers in this genre. You'll be pulled into chair-gripping, hold-your-breath, heart-pounding action from the very start, a roller-coaster-ride of a thriller that you won't want to put down until you reach the ending. I read Hunt The Lion straight through, in one sitting, as I was too mesmerized to let go of any part of the story-line. I just loved this book! It is definitely comparable to the Jason Bourne and Jack Reacher series! So, now that I've "run out of book," I must honestly say to Mr. Zunker: This series simply MUST continue, so we need to know when we can expect the 4th (and not final!) installment. ***** 5 stars for sure! *****

I started to read this book because I thought it was a different Sam. Thanks but no thanks to this Sam I am. Featuring all the Washington alphabet soup agencies and a female investigative reporter in love with Sam who discovers the father he never knew (The Lion) and a little brother he didn’t know he had and married the aforementioned reporter in a denouement fit for this search for a plot, this book, like this ridiculous sentence, should be a lot shorter or preferably remained unexpressed .

Trouble Stalks This Guy
I like the Sam Callahan character a lot. But, sheesh! This man is a magnet for trouble. Not the little stuff, like parking tickets or gas station sushi. I'm talking big, bad trouble. The kind that gets you and those around you killed. He should probably come with a government warning label.

Regardless, he's a great read. He has a unique skill set from his time spent on the streets as a kid. His brain rewired itself in fascinating ways, allowing him to see circumstances, events, and places in ways most cannot. Then there's his um... problem with "withholding information" from his fiancé, a woman he promised he'd never lie to again. Oops. Since both Sam and his fiancé are brilliant, he realizes he may just lose her thanks to this latest mission. He can't pull the wool over her eyes., and she's running seriously low on patience with him.

All of the characters in this novel are superb, each adding their own interesting elements to a plot that speeds like a bullet train out of the station. If spy-vs-spy, government cover-ups, alphabet agencies, and action/suspense reads are your deal, Sam Callahan is a guy you need to get to know. All of the books in his series have been high-energy brain-melting stories that offer hours of entertainment and intrigue. This unassuming character consistently offers stories of superior quality with a slick savvy style that hooks the reader early, then keeps them wanting more.

I love a good thriller that has twists and turns that keep you guessing. Chad Zunker's series featuring Sam Callahan offers plenty of thrills. Sam is a good guy. But, even good guys have flaws and don't always make the best decisions. Sam is one of those kind of guys. He is a strong character who is growing and maturing, but still has to face his own demons along the way. Many of his struggles started in his childhood and he is still discovering secrets from his past. Because Sam is a good guy, he is probably the last person you'd expect to be surreptitiously involved in all manner of murky mysterious missions and on the run from people who aren't looking to make friends with him. Zunker has developed a great series. I do encourage reading the books in order if you can as there is definitely background in the early books that helps pull together this third book. Hunt the Lion! Who or what is the Lion? Sam, himself, doesn't even know the answer but he soon figures out that the Lion is the key to solving his current dilemma. Such a great read!! I received an ARC free of charge from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I was introduced to Sam Callahan after picking up the first book, The Tracker. I was hooked! Sam is a smart, clever and resilient young man. Although a victim of childhood abuse and neglect, Sam has managed to gain an education, become a lawyer, and find a woman he truly loves. He also has innate skills that have helped him survive in the most dangerous of circumstances, and although he would like nothing more than settle down to a normal life, he seems destined to work with shadowy government agencies to help others (at least that’s Sam’s goal).
I like how the author began to unwrap Sam’s past in the first two novels. I loved Hunt the Lion because Sam finally learns more about his father and discovers things about his past and the importance of family. And, of course, this personal story is interwoven into international settings and a heartstopping story of adventure and covert intrigue.
I can’t wait for the next book to see how love and family will help Sam to continue to face hostile and dangerous assignments.

I was such a fan of The Tracker, I pre-ordered and could not WAIT to get Hunt the Lion. I got an early copy for review courtesy of Netgalley.com and the author's mailing list.

Once again, Sam Callahan gets almost everyone he knows and talks to killed. That's not a spoiler. It's just Sam.

This installation of the Sam Saga worked much better for me than the last one. I do like Natalie less and less though. If Sam doesn't get her killed eventually, she will probably get him killed by showing up in places she has no business going.

Great twist in the end of the story. I was sure I knew the traitor, and I am so glad I was wrong.

Recommended for fans of political thrillers.

Chad, please give Sam a few years of normalcy with Natalie before he gets chased all over the planet by assassins again??

This tense spy novel abruptly begins with the protagonist, Sam Callaham, retrieving inaccessible secret data deep within a Russian oligarch's impregnable fortress-like home. There a young boy living with the Russian complicates Sam's mission. CIA leaks leave Sam targeted and alone, abandoned in Russia. Unaware of the treachery, Sam's fiancee, an investigative DC reporter, disrupts related treasonous activities at high political levels. In his maneuvers to escape Sam travels through Munich, Milan, and Paris, doggedly pursued by a notorious Austrian assassin. Despite the high body count, the novel manages to provide some offsetting tender moments. I was thoroughly enthralled by this intricate novel of action and intrigue.

This was a quick read and was mostly a series of bad guys trying to kill our hero, Sam Callahan, as he runs away from them through many European cities and towns. I loved the first book in the series, but liked the second book less, finding it silly and superficial. Thanks to NetGalley's offer, I am now reviewing the third book in the series. Sam Callahan is a likeable young lawyer who gets caught up in a dangerous scheme that he does not fully understand. When everything goes south, Sam is on the run, and narrowly escapes while everyone around him seems not to be so lucky. This was a fun book to read, but it was thin on plot and character development, while being very strong on rapid action. I'm guessing there will be more books to come in the series.

Sam Callahan, brought into the covert CIA operations led by none other than Pellini (his new found father). Deep in the home of one of the richest and most powerful men in Russia, Callahan has to do what he does best... RUN! During a crazy black ops mission, Sam and his CIA team are caught off guard and are left scrambling to pick up the pieces to uncover the truth. Sam uncovers more than he bargained for and ends up learning more about family than he knew. Meanwhile his fiancé, Natalie is back in the US searching for answers to her own adventures. Being chased, gunned down, and crashed into, Natalie is faced with a story that uncovers so much corruptness that leads back to the black ops mission Sam was on.

Great Read! Love Chad Zunker! Love Sam Callahan! Keep them coming!!

Another Masterpiece!

Chad's books are amazing. I find them impossible to put down. While providing thrills and daring exploits fraught with peril, Chad has incorporated a description about a side of real life that far too many people are unaware of. I've had some experience with people who CARE for disadvantaged youth. Chad goes far beyond simply writing about them. In real life he is a catalyst for a program to aid the homeless. Moreover, I had a friend who worked as a deep field operative for the CIA. Chad's descriptions of the inner operations of that organization ring very true - as far as can ever be publically disclosed. I highly recommend this book and actually all of his books! Buy them and enjoy them!

Riveting and Fantastic

I picked "Family Money" for a free choice at Amazon.com about one month ago. Since that time I have read all 7 of Zucker's e-books available. I was pulled back 60 some years ago, when my wife and I were dating, and she introduced me to the Agatha Christie books. At that time I became hooked on mystery books and mystery authors. I've really gotten hooked by Zucker's fast pace and an ever surprising new twist in the plot.

I have whole-naturally recommended this author and his books to several friends, and acquaintances. Take a few minutes to read the first chapter of any of his books and attempt to set it aside!

Thank you Chad for the great reads. I cannot wait for the next one.

Just like a roller-coaster ride!

Truly an amazing tale. Really like Chad's style of writing. Not a bunch of adjectives or adverbs just for the heck of it.
As your reading along and you just want to scream, spit it out already, will you!
None of that here, thank goodness!
Thank you Mr. Zunker. It's a gift to bring the readers right into the storyline.
By now, Sam Callahan and Natalie, are always in the thick of it, either together or on their own.
You've come to love or hate, the characters by now and ready for more, Sam Callahan!
Great read by yourself or audible!
These books will keep you wondering, what's next!
Thanks for writing this series, Chad Zunker.
Great way to escape your own thoughts, and just enjoy the adventure. :))

This time Sam finds himself on a top-secret CIA mission in Russia, working with his long-lost father, when things go horribly wrong. The team is ambushed, and Sam barely escapes with his life. As he searches for the truth and his missing father, he is again hunted by the world's most notorious assassin, the Gray Wolf.

Again, the action was non-stop, and there were enough excitement to keep me engaged. It's more of a spy thriller than the previous ones, but because we were already invested in Sam's life, it won't put readers off who don't like CIA spy thrillers.

This book also addressed my worries about the way the previous book ended. I can identify with Sam again, as he returned to more honest ways.

Well, let me start by saying this book is AMAZING!!! Chad Zunker never ceases to amaze me with his stories. I loved the complicity of Sam and Natalie's lives and real-life challenges they face. A mesmerizing thriller that quickly entraps you in a world of murder and secrecy. It was emotionally captivating. From the real life moments, reactions, and just the obstacles that life has in general. They maneuvered it all so well and ended up stronger in the end. The only word I can really think of to describe is ‘survival’ because they are in fact trying to survive. Once the stories foundation is set, it’s nothing but a roller coaster of intense action and intense feelings. Great job!

Former CIA Sam Callahan thinks he has a normal life as a rookie lawyer in DC with his wife. That will not last for long as he is sent to Russia on a covert intelligence mission where he will be in danger as well as his wife that he has no choice to get involve in. In so he will meet his estranged father, a undercover spy whom he has never met before.

Operation fails as he and his team is ambushed. He wonders if it was all a setup as he tries to stay alive. It is up to him to find the truth and who is behind things.

This is an action pace spy thriller that makes for a fascinating read.

Chad Zunker gets 5 stars from me on account of leaving cursing, swearing, and expletives up to my imaginatipn

rather than having gratuitous foul language and sex unnecessary to the plot. I also had the Audible version and the fact that the reader sounded Tom-Hanksesque complemented the author's writing style. As I read and listened to all 3 books in the series on a long road trip i wondered to whom the books where addressed. Perhaps he wanted something that he would not be embarrassed to have his wife, daughters, and fellow theists read unapologetically. Seems to !e he cleared the bar.

Fast paced thriller

Love all of Chad Zunker’s book. Terrific plots, good character development, no unnecessary side comments to derail the plot as it races along!

This is the third Sam Callahan book which follows Sam on a CIA assignment from his newly discovered father, a legendary CIA agent. However, everything goes wrong as Sam’s team is killed & Sam has to run for his life, trusting no one and getting no help from his father.

Meanwhile, his fiancé Natalie, a DC investigative reporter, is upset when Sam can’t be found and starts her own investigation leading to a secret plot by high ranking people.

I'm not exactly sure why, but this book did not live up to my memories of the prior two. It was still fast paced and a quick easy read, but I was never fully immersed in the story.

I actually listened on Audible and was not a great fan of the narrator, maybe that has something to do with it - I honestly don't know. But, it was a nice conclusion to an intriguing trilogy. Sam was and always has been, and extremely likable character, and luckily, that does not change. The author does leave it open for the potential of a continuation.

Great series

You know, I haven't even reviewed the 2nd book in this series yet because, although I enjoyed it, I didn't like some of the particulars of the ending. I held off until reading this book, because I wanted to know if assume if the perceived weaknesses in the last ending were worth it in setting up the 3rd book. They were worth it. And even more so, I wish he would continue the series, although I dying don't think he will. Great series, I read the last book in like a day.

Fantastic!!!

Oh how I've loved reading about Sam Callahan's life and adventures. The storylines have flowed easily and kept me excited about reading the next chapter. The characters were perfect. I could picture each one in my mind as I was reading. The plot of each book takes twists and turns that kept the pages turning quickly. I enjoyed these 3 books so much that I didn't want the story to end.
Thank you Chad Zunker for writing these books that have kept me happily entertained 😀

ANOTHER Great Read from Mr. Zunker

I had read the first two Sam Callahan books and then put them down and went on to other books and other authors. But Amazon kept pushing this book and so I purchased it and I am glad I did. The author give subtle reminders of the first two books and got me hooked and I nearly could not put this one down. I still think Run Away Justice is Mr. Zunker best book, but this one was right up there. I love spy novels and this was full of great twists and turns and points of view. Enjoy!
