He is called Angel , a ruggedly handsome hired gun with eyes as black as sin. Unwanted and unwelcomed by his ungrateful employer, he would just as soon leave Cassie to fend for herself. Johanna Helen Howard was born on March 10, 1952 in Germany, where her father, Edwin Dennis Howard, a soldier in the U.S. Army was stationed. The family moved about a great deal when she was young. Her father always dreamed of retiring to Hawaii, and after he passed away in 1964 Johanna and her mother settled there to honor him.

In 1970, when she was still in school, she married Ralph Lindsey, becoming a young housewife. The marriage had three children; Alfred, Joseph and Garret, who already have made her a grandmother. After her husband's death, Johanna moved to Maine, New England, to stay near her family.

Johanna Lindsey wrote her first book, Captive Bride in 1977 "on a whim", and the book was a success. By 2006, with over 58 Million copies of her books have been sold worldwide, with translations appearing in 12 languages, Johanna Lindsey is one of the world's most popular authors of historical romance.

Johanna's books span the various eras of history, including books set in the Middle Ages, the American "Old West" and the popular Regency England-Scotland. She has even written a few sci-fi romances. By far the most popular among her books are the stories about the Malory-Anderson Family, a Regency England saga.

Johanna Lindsey died on Oct. 27, 2019 in Nashua, N.H. She was 67.

I just re-read this book this weekend and was reminded again how much I love it, despite being a non-fan of western romance.

Angel is a ruthless gunfighter. However, he is indebted by a friend to undertake the business of peacemaker for the sake of Cassie Stuart. Cassie has a tendency of meddling, which landed her in big trouble lately: In her effort to pacificate her warring neighbors, she played matchmaker for their children. Unfortunately, the matchmaking effort didn't end well, leaving the two families in an ever greater hostility with each other but also with Cassie. Angel is forced to stay close in order to keep Cassie safe from her enemies and also try to help the situation as best as he can without -as Cassie demands- shooting anyone.

But staying close to Cassie, proves to be dangerous in ways Angel never imagined. Cassie is not only the first person to not be afraid of him; she's also the only person so far interested to get to know him. She's also strong, independant but sweet and caring. She comes to realize how lonely Angel really is and that despite appearing ruthless, he has his own code of honor that won't allow him to treat others unfairly or let a woman get hurt. Both are attracted to each other but won't openly admit it. Cassie because she's considering herself unattractive -her previous suitors admited to courting her just for her money- and Angel because he believes he's unworthy of any real lady.

At that point, her neighbors decide to get their revenge on Cassie in a way similar to hers: matchmaking. They force Cassie and Angel to marry -under the threat of a shotgun- giving them the excuse they were looking for in order to end up in bed together:) Unfortunately, a day -and night!- or two later, Cassie's parents arrive in the ranch, demand that the two of them get a divorce and Angel walks away.

Of course this is not the end of the story which has a HEA in more ways than one! This is one of the sweetest, more charming stories I've ever read. Angel is an awesome hero, with a seriously troubled past which surprisingly he doesn't carry as a flag around him. He's dangerous but when he comes to care for Cassie he falls for good. And Cassie, despite being innocent and sweet, has the spine to stand up beside such a man. There are numerous humorous instances throughout the book, many of which derive from Cassie's rather unique family and their 'pets'. But this levity does not mean the book lacks emotional depth; on the contrary. A really great romance, that left me -again- with a smile on my face all day long.

My favourite Johanna Lindsey book, hands down! I’ve lost count of how many times I re-read this over the past 20-odd years. Nothing else of hers I read has quite measured up to this book. The humour is fantastic, and the chemistry between Angel and Cassie is sizzling! I think the best part of the book is the dialogue. They just crack me up. The secondary characters are great too especially Cassie’s parents. Believe it or not, some married people actually use their children as an intermediary instead of speaking to each other, and this goes on for years (I had an ex-colleague whose parents had this sort of marriage; I was super shocked when I heard about it, I thought this doesn’t happen IRL). I think this book is a great introduction to JL’s body of work.

Okay, I've read this book many times over the years. Previously I didn't love it because it was a western. Well, now I like westerns and I still don't love it. Why? Well, let me tell you.

1) Weird plot happenings that didn't add to the story and just made me go huh? For example, Why are these things in the book? They aren't cute or interesting and didn't advance the plot that I could see, just annoying.

2) Parents that don't speak for 10 years while living in the same house and make their daughter (heroine) be their conduit for conversation or sniping, as it mainly seemed to be? WTF. That's just irrational, not to mention child abuse.

3) The heroine's meddling. yes, I guess it was supposed to be cute and quirky but it was annoying. And when it came to the hero, pretty much emasculating. She's so determined to protect him that she won't let this famous gunfighter have his own showdown??? Give your head shake, girl. Why don't you just put a dress on him and call him missus.

4) The hero's lost family. It was okay, I guess but I would have been okay without it. Not everything needs to be neatly wrapped up by the end of the book.

Despite this, there were things I like about this book. Mainly Angel. He's a great hero, loved him in the previous book in the series, loved him in this one.

And I liked the idea of the heroine who's unremarkable at first but who grows on the hero until he pretty much thinks the sun and moon rise and set especially for her.

And I'm a sucker for marriage of convenience/forced wedding plots. It's all so 1800's crazy.

MINI- REVIEW:

The eponymous Angel of Johanna Lindsey‘s 25th romance novel is a gunslinger whose background is shrouded in mystery.

Abandoned by his family at a young age, he goes by the name his mother called him as a young boy. Angel is not a traditional romance hero. For one thing, he’s very short. Moreover, Angel wants nothing to do with the heroine, Cassie Stuart, a meddlesome young lady with a black panther. Somehow he finds himself trying to help Cassie out of a mess she’s gotten herself into. Cassie is more than capable of using a weapon, but she needs Angel’s help to save her ranch.

The humor here is utterly charming, and the chemistry between the two protagonists is sizzling. Angel is a hero to die for.

Johanna Lindsey knows how to write an entertaining love story. I laughed out loud several times. Angel's reactions to Cassie's "pet" were amusing.

I wasn't expecting to like Angel as much as I did. His brief appearances in the preceding books combined with his shady background didn't make me think he'd be hero material. Well... I was wrong! He was a great hero: dangerous yet noble, tender yet tough, etc.

As for Cassie she's sweet and strong-willed, exactly the way I like my heroines. Her tendency to meddle, although well-intentioned, initially created more trouble than solutions but they all panned out in the end.

I liked seeing these two get together. Poor Angel couldn't stay away from Cassie in spite of himself! LOL Their romance was as fun and cute as they were.

When a gunslinger arrives in place of someone else, at the ranch her father left her alone on, Cassie Stuart knew she had to run him off before he made things worse for her. Having sent for a peacemaker to settle a neighboring feud- not someone who would stir up a hornet’s nest- the man known as the Angel of Death simply would not do.

Angel had never met a woman quite like the Stuart girl, not exactly a beauty- but definitely intriguing. At first thinking he didn’t even like her, he found himself surprised to want to stick around and help her out.

To exact their revenge on Cassie for her meddling ways, the townsfolk force her to marry Angel- which ends up being little hardship as Cassie sees to his lonely noble heart and he’s decided she’s gotten better looking with every passing day. It’s when her parents- who’ve only talked to each other thru Cassie for years- show up, that things get turned awry… and Cassie and Angel not telling each other their true fears about romantic relationships, doesn’t help either.

Angel takes off soon after, believing he’s not good enough for Cassie, and Cassie- though incredibly hurt- lets him leave. Still, being who she is, she cant let it completely go. She resolves to find Angel’s missing parents. Which of course she does.

sigh

Another sweet, quirky romance from the Dowager of Romance. These oldies by Lindsey read so easily and charm every time. Even on 100th re-read.

This was an enjoyable story, where I imagined the actress from Bridget Jones playing the lead, as the main character kept getting herself into uncomfortable circumstances. Her "saviour" came from an unlikely place and stuck to her to prevent further calamaties except for an instance of going to the bar to get drunk which seemed out of character of dedicating himself to protecting her.

Am I the only one who thinks the story was boring?
I usually love J.L.'s stories but this time it was shallow and predictable... Sorry, but that's how I felt reading the book!

¡Adoro esa portada!

Listed as the third book in the Wyoming series by Johanna Lindsey. Set in the old west in 1881, Angel comes to Texas to paid a debt for an old friend. His debt is to help Cassie Stuart. But Angel is a gunfighter and Cassie wants her problems solved peacefully, without anyone getting hurt.

One of the better historical western romances in my opinion. Loved the characters and humor and found it delightful and entertaining. Just what a book is suppose to be.

1.5 ⭐️

Rating: 3.5 stars / Grade: B -

Disclaimer: I am not a professional reviewer, nor was I solicited for this review. My ebook was purchased at bn.com. I read and comprehended the entire text of this book at least 1 time prior to reviewing.

Spoiler Warning: I do my best to label spoilers, but I’m not perfect. Please read at your own risk.

Johanna Lindsey is probably one of the more influential authors of true vintage romance novels. Her work encompasses the “bodice-ripper” tropes that were so trendy in the 1970’s and 1980’s, which may not sit well with newer romance readers. I admit my feelings about Lindsey novels are ambivalent. I’ve read several of her historical romances, some I really liked and others I’ve abhorred. Lindsey is nothing if not adaptable and she has managed to sustain a lengthy writing career despite inconsistent quality in her works.

I picked up and read “Angel” because many of Lindsey’s backlist novels are now available in ebook for $3.99 and I read so many positive reviews of “Angel” I felt I needed to check it out and make sure I hadn’t missed an exceptionally good read.

My experience with this historical western romance is very mixed. The first half read quickly and kept me very engaged. I found Angel and Cassie very intriguing and mostly fun to know. The secondary characters usually didn’t disappoint, either. The plot elements stretched pretty thin and beggared belief, but taken as a comfortable, relaxing “popcorn” read, I was still mostly entertained through the first half.

In the second half, the love story plot imploded. Angel seems to have fallen for Cassie, but there’s no believable transition of his feelings from attraction to love. Meanwhile, Cassie is afflicted with perpetual bad judgment and terrible decision-making skills.

Angel deals with several obstacles reconciling with his family and rescuing Cassie from a vengeful criminal and he perseveres more often than not through coincidence and good luck. I realize the novel would have been much larger if Lindsey portrayed Angel actually working for his victories, but things fell into place a bit too neatly for any real tension to occur.

The love scenes in the book are more desperate/lonely than romantic – always a turn-off for me. However, I enjoyed the more sensuous language and limited description in the love scenes compared to more recent romance and erotic romance works. They were present, they made an impression, but they didn’t take over the book nor were they exceptionally graphic or explicit.

The emotional tension is beautifully crafted and there’s a lot of beautiful language and structure in this novel. If the plot had been more substantial, I’d consider this a great book, but the plot and subplots were not “meaty enough” to sustain the novel’s word count. As it stands, I do see “Angel” as one of Lindsey’s better novels and I understand its popularity. “Angel” is definitely worth a look.

Johanna Lindsey was among one of my first loves when it came it authors. I first picked up her books as a prepubescent kid and I just ate them up. I found her characters to be funny and the heroine was always so challenging while the hero was sometimes gentle and sometimes rough but always so damn masculine. Swoon. Re-reading a lot of her books as an adult now and I'm quite amused to see a good chunck of her books miss the mark now. Still, I'll always have a fondness for her. For that reason, I'm bumping this up from 2.5 stars.
Cassie was a little more scatter-brained that I like in a good heroine but she had spirit. Plus I loved her pet :D Angel is a lone-wolf-cowboy who's sexy and dangerous and aloof and all kinds of high handed (not a bad thing). The stroy was amusing but I found some of the filler characters to be too over the top. But if you like shotgun weddings and a light ride the this is your cup of tea.

As I read this compulsively for the 437th time... (I may be exaggerating there), I'm reminded why it's on my keeper shelf. There's humor - offbeat, there's self-awareness - the h is the impulsive sort and well aware that it's a failing but she can't seem to help herself, and the conflicts are non-threatening - at least, beyond the loose cannon who got what he deserved. Really, the only stupid moment was the h charging into town at night, alone and unarmed, thus presenting the loose cannon's brother with the perfect opportunity to grab her.

As for the panther... I don't think it works like that, but for the story...yeah; the idea of a leopard who behaves more like a big dog...we'll let it slide.

I am a sucker for western romances with a bit of tortured hero on the side; and although this story had some of my favorite tropes going on I did not enjoy it as much as I would have liked to. I felt there was no chemistry between Angel and Cassie, and no emotional depth to all the events going on. Given his past I would have expected more of an internal conflict from Angel, and more depth to the feeling that these two supposedly developed for each other. No character development and the emotional side fell flat...so a two star rating from me.

This book has been on my 'Keeper shelf' for a long time and I've enjoyed reading it a few times. A hired gun and a trouble maker, I love it. This book has a hero who can love without being a controlling, domineering man. A heroin who just can't help but meddle in other people's business. This book has a nice romance, a lot of humor, and great character development. It will remain on my keeper shelf.

Great followup to the 2nd Wyoming book with Joceyln and Colt.

I love Cassie's spunk and Angel's patient nature with her. They were a lot more entertaining with their dialogue with each other than Joceyln and Colt.

1.3 ✨

Yeah just no.

1) Weird plot things happenings that don't add to the story at all? I'm sorry but the panther??? Not helping in any situation because always conveniently too far away .. and everybody is just like "Oh yeah seems reasonable that you have this one as a pet" the hell?

2) Everything is resolved by realising unspoken feelings of love .. all THE TIME. Like every problem in this book stems from PEOPLE NOT TALKING TO EACH OTHER and is resolved by the magic of love. And I'm so tired of it.

3) The language used .. I get it it's a western set quite some time ago ... . Also .. the constant borderline forced upon sexual advances by the 'hero' upon her just .. can we not ..

3) Cassie's constant meddling. It's supposed to be cute and quirky but it was just plain annoying. There is not even a lot of sense in like at least 80% of it .. no reasonable explanation at ALL.

4) The women are supposed to be emancipated in this one .. but the way it is done is just so .. no. Because at the end of the day the always need a man for everything .. no matter how "strong and independent" they are in the beginning ..

Overall I'm glad it's over ..

I don't have much to say about this book. I enjoyed it, the characters were well-done, and the plot was interesting enough to keep me engaged.
I didn't like the trope of miscommunication and the fact that that was the main problem that was keeping the main characters separated. If that wasn't involved, I would have loved it! But it was like a hundred pages of them being stupid and not talking about their relationship! And also it has a scene of an attempt of rape to the main character, which I don't love when in books this is the main thing that brings them together. So be prepare!
I liked the atmosphere, and I loved Cassie, she was strong and independent, while being sweet and wholesome with the right amount of craziness.
I would recommend if that trope doesn't bother you that much because it's a good book, the story is interesting and the romance is a slow-burn type. The writing style is good, and I might try other books from the author. It was fast-paced and engaging.

[image error]

Waktu berlalu sampai bbrp hari stlh thn baru, mereka akhirnya bertemu lagi akibat kebiasaan ikut campur Cassie (lagi) , kali ini yg jd korban adl Angel, Cassie sewa detektif utk mencari org tua Angel (akhir nya ketemu lhooo...Canggih deh Cassie)....tp mereka tetap berpisah setelah satu malam tak terlupakan ehm ehm.... [image error]
Satu kejadian seru lagi yg menimpa Cassie dg mantan pekerja keluarga McCallan yg bikin mereka akhirnya menyadari ternyata they were made for each other....semua senang pada akhir nya...banyak cameo dari buku 1 dan 2 yg bermunculan disini...

This is the third and final book of the Wyoming Trilogy and it was a great wrap-up. It isn't necessary to read the first two books of the series to keep up with what's going on in this book, but it would make the ending of this read so much more satisfying if you did. Besides, they're great books, too.

We were first introduced to Angel in Savage Thunder (Book 2) when he was doing a daring rescue of Colt Thunder's duchess. I already had the entire series, so I knew he would have his own book, but I didn't see why until I started reading it. He was a secondary character in Savage Thunder and didn't get a lot of time in the story. But it was enough to pique my interest.

Angel is a gunfighter and makes no apologies for that. He does what he does and doesn't kill innocent people if he can help it. I guess that makes him a gunfighter with a code of honor. But there are fools out there who call him out, knowing who he is and want to make a name for themselves, and he knows when he pulls his gun, it's to kill or be killed. It was a harrowing way for him to make a living, but he didn't really know anything else. He had a shady if not brutal upbringing and he was a survivor. And, being a man of honor, he also paid his debts. He didn't like to owe anybody anything, which is how he ended up on the doorstep of Cassandra Stuart.

Cassie is known meddler. She's got a big heart and she means well, but this time she overstepped her boundaries when she played matchmaker between two rival families and it backfired. Both families want her out of Texas (she's visiting her father who lives there). They've threatened to burn the house down, have chased off most of her hired hands, and have accosted her in public. Her father is detained somewhere with an injured foot and she's alone on the ranch with a housekeeper and a few workers and her black panther, Marabelle. Desperate, she wires a friend for help and her friend sends Angel because her friend can't get away.

Angel isn't the traditional hero. Instead of being tall, dark, and handsome, he's shorter, dark, and handsome. He doesn't know his last name and goes by Angel because that's what he remembered his mother calling him when he was a child. I thought that was sad. He's a wanderer, a gunfighter, and really has no connections to anyone. His only friend is Colt Thunder and he's okay with that.

Cassie has trouble with men. She's unusual looking with dark hair and gray eyes and men don't find her attractive. She's had few suitors and soon finds out the only reason they want her is for her money and ranch. Until Angel. He's got money of his own and hates ranching so she can't figure out why he's attracted to her. I thought that was sad, too. She is a meddler and this mess she's in is a big one and not one that she feels comfortable with a gunfighter handling. She doesn't want anybody to die.

So, we have some neighbors who are miscreants, a gunfighter who is trying to ease things over, and a heroine that can handle a gun as well as any man and thinks she's unattractive. Throw in a shotgun wedding, Cassie's parents who have a strange relationship themselves, and see what happens.

I enjoyed this book immensely. I loved the enigma of Angel and I loved how he and Cassie interacted. I knew they were in love before they did, although I think they knew it and just didn't want to admit it. He was a gunfighter with nothing to offer. He was afraid of rejection and went to great lengths to avoid it. She was an innocent young woman, a do-gooder, who was always trying to help others. She got too involved this time, but it all paid off.

One thing I have to say about this series; it's pretty steamy, considering it's old school. It was published in 2001. Johanna Lindsey was a trailblazer for what we read today. She pushed the envelope at making us blush and if I'd read this book after it was first released, I would've gasped at the very least. Wow.

Great book! Great series!

kangen sama HR Kocak, ringan, & pastinya romantis khas tante JL akhirnya terobati setelah membaca Angel

Tadinya takut boring baca JL, yg akhir2 ini ceritanya krg menarik perhatian tp setelah membaca review an dr Mba Lely... bkin penasaran lahir bathin ckckck

Sebenarnya, cerita Angel ngingetin ak sama MMS(nvl JL yg pertama kali ak baca)
Angel- Sebastian sama berbahayanya namun menggoda xD

lucunya, klo Angel udh bete sama Cassie, bertambah akut pula dgn piaraan Cassie, namanya Marabelle---macan kumbang hitam yg galak (krg lbh mirip Cassie hehehe)

ditengah pekerjaan nya, karena suatu keadaan terdesak, Angel-Cassie diharuskan menikah (jrengg..jrengg..)
Cassie Kelabakan, Angel manfaatkan keadaan hehehehe....

tp syg pernikahan mereka seumur jagung
msh ada tp nya..mereka balikan lg koq...( HR Always Happy End )

plg seneng waktu Angel dibayar lagi sama Catherine --ibunda nya Cassie-- bwt bebasin Cassie yg jd korban penculikan

Catherine : "Kalau begitu biarkan aku membayarmu"

Angel : "Untuk menyelamatkan istriku?" (memandang dgn tajam), "Dia masih istriku kan?"

Nahhhhh Speechless dah itu ibu mertua :D
