Short prequel to the Sky Raider’s series. I read this after I had completed the first book in the series because I wanted to understand where the love between Garek and Taya came from and how it developed into the strong, world-moving force that we see immediately in the first book. Unfortunately, although we do see how they met, there really isn’t anything that speaks to how that attraction became what it is in the series.

Prequel to Sky Raiders series

This short prequel allows us to experience how Garek and Taya fell in love. They are both very sympathetic MCs.

If I had only read this short story, I would have assumed that this series was going to be sword-and-sorcery fantasy. But in the subsequent books, aliens with spaceships come into the picture, converting the series to science fiction romance.

SkyRaiders0.5 (audiobook)

Garek has come home at the request of his mentor, interrupting his training duties. Garek has eight more months of guard duty, before his two year conscription in regional service. But, Kas has pulled him back for clandestine reasons, and, as it turns out, a lot has been happening while he was away.

Their town is isolated and largely focused on herd farming. Their primary industry is producing raw wool for a merchant market. But, in the past few years, their herds have increased production enough to fulfill the quota requirements, with wool left over. Kas’ sister, Taya has become a talented dyer known for her colors, and they have been dying the extra wool and selling it at market themselves.

And now they know they have been cheated in their contract, as the merchants were greatly underpaying for their wool. There have been attacks on the way to market, and more recently, in the village. Kas needs Garek to investigate, to stave off accusations of self-interest. Someone else wants to represent village interests in a new contract, and Kas cannot point at his competition.

Garek agrees, but also realizes the sabotage would stop if Taya stopped her dye works; and that happens most readily with her death. So, not only must he find out if the competitor is behind the attacks, but protect Taya in the process.

A lot to do by himself, especially as Garek and Taya are old enough to be interested in each other, to Kas’ disapproval. Keeping Taya safe gets complicated, as the conspiracy starts to unravel and all the players are revealed.

Protecting the community is secured. Now, it takes time for their relationship to mature.

A prequel to the Sky Raiders series, we get to see Garek and Taya meet again after being separated for four years, and realize how much they are attracted to each other, despite Taya’s brother’s interference and disapproval. Throw in an investigation into some villains trying to stop the village’s new independent wool enterprise, and you have a great little story that gets you ready for reading the rest of the Sky Raiders books (in case you haven’t read them already), which I recommend.

This is a short novella I received when I signed up for the author’s book release notifications.
It was a short and sweet little read, a prequel to the first book of the series. It was good, obviously not a whole lot happened since it was short, but worth the read.

I believe I should have read Book1 before this, as would have been more invested in the 2 main characters than I was. Regardless, off to read Sky Raiders.
