Central Park Pact #1

Passion on Park Avenue

Rate this book
From the author of the New York Times bestselling Stiletto and Oxford series, the first in a sizzling new series following the unlikely friendship of three Upper East Side women as they struggle to achieve their dreams and find true love and happiness in the city that never sleeps.

For as long as she can remember, Bronx-born Naomi Powell has had one goal: to prove her worth among the Upper East Side elite-the same people for which her mom worked as a housekeeper. Now, as the strongminded, sassy CEO of one of the biggest jewelry empires in the country, Naomi finally has exactly what she wants-but it's going to take more than just the right address to make Manhattan's upper class stop treating her like an outsider.

The worst offender is her new neighbor, Oliver Cunningham-the grown son of the very family Naomi's mother used to work for. Oliver used to torment Naomi when they were children, and as a ridiculously attractive adult, he's tormenting her in entirely different ways. Now they find themselves engaged in a battle-of-wills that will either consume or destroy them...

Filled with charm and heart and plenty of sex and snark, this entertaining series will hook you from the very first page.

A sweet romance filled with that angst between two characters in which both have a common past that must be dealt with or their future is at stakes of being together...

Let me start off by saying that I have not read a Lauren Layne novel in such a long time. And to have this beauty in my hands was just so a blessing yet a risk I was willing to take. The reason being is the last book I read from Lauren's was not actually my cup of tea so I was very hesitant to dive into this one. The risk was for sure good to take because I loved everything about this novel and much more! Romance novels to me have always been about the chemistry, passion, and connection there is between the characters, There was no exception when it came down to this beauty, because Lauren has created this new world of potential and charisma. This first installment in the Central Park Pact series is the best, and fresh cup of tea one must take when being involved and introduced to this new compelling series.

In this first installment, we are introduced to Naomi and Oliver, known from each other's childhoods, they both see each other once again in the future once they are both successful as adults. Naomi is this accessory's CEO, a founder of her own company, while Oliver is an architect. In my opinion, Naomi is this bad-ass woman who needs no one to conquer the world. It is indeed refreshing to read about a character who has legitimately started from the bottom and has made it all the way to the top of the chain, the place where no one ever thought she would be at. Now as her success keeps on growing, she must come face to face with the idea of finding closure with the Cunninghams. Being put in a situation she never signed up for, and she never thought would be in after her last relationship. When confronting the truth however, she must learn that having the feelings of wanting revenge, can change a person. Time always does and she soon realizes that once she is confronted with Oliver, that youngster from before, now a handsome man who does not recognize Naomi. But is keeping that secret worth all those witty banters, special moments she steals from Oliver?

Both of them together have conquered to have this fulfilling relationship of knowing each other in the best of emotional ways. Romance novels are known as well for having those sexy, steamy, intimate scenes. This story however, it's something different for sure. The intimacy that is described is nothing beyond physical. It's more in depth when it comes to these two. They have this emotional connection that as reader, is semi-refreshing to read and enjoy unlike other romance novels. I am also not saying that all romance novels that I have read in the past don't have that emotional connection that I am currently talking about, this novel just enhances that topic of having that emotional attachment and I love everything about it, and most importantly I love how Oliver feels about her;
"Naomi's face tilted to his, and for a moment Oliver's breath caught with an unfamiliar sensation. Want, yes. Desire, sure. But this moment was different. Fuller somehow, as though this woman belonged to him not just for right now, not just for a night, but for always..."

Overall, I truly did enjoy this novel more than what I actually thought I would. I am beyond ecstatic for Audrey and Clark's story. My fingers are itching for their novel! I am keeping my fingers crossed as well that their story is coming in book three. We already have the couple for book two which is Claire and Scott, and I am truly excited for that beauty as well!

Passion on Park Avenue by Lauren Layne is a 2019 Gallery Books publication.

A sweet and delightful story, sure to leave a smile on your face!

Naomi Powell has come a long way in life- from the Bronx to Manhattan, from being homeless to becoming the CEO of a billion -dollar jewelry empire. But she has never forgotten her humble beginnings.

However, Naomi gets the shock of her life when her boyfriend dies in an accident and she discovers, by way of his obituary, that he was married. Not only that, she soon learns that she was not the only woman he was cheating on his wife with. The widow, and the two girlfriends, meet while avoiding the funeral service and decide to join forces, promising to help each other avoid making another bad choice in men.

Meanwhile, Naomi’s mother has reached out from the grave, forging her name on an apartment application in the building where she once worked as a housekeeper. Naomi is surprised to learn her application was approved, but is even more surprised to learn that her new neighbor is none other than Oliver Cunningham, the son of the man her mother worked for. Unable to stop herself, she takes great pleasure in giving him a long-overdue comeuppance for the way he treated her when they were children.

However, the more she learns about Oliver, the harder it is to dislike him- in fact, she is mortified by her attraction to him and the clear chemistry sizzling between them.

But, would Oliver still feel the same way about her if he ever found out that she was the little red headed girl he once tormented? The girl from the Bronx, the one whose mother was once his parent’s housekeeper? Naomi doesn’t think so. But, the longer she keeps her secret, the harder it is to reveal…

This is an adorable page-turner with terrific characterizations, sharp dialogue and a few lessons in preconceived notions, class distinctions and harboring bitterness and resentment. The story also features a prominent storyline about family obligations and ‘adulting’ which of course is not easy.

While the tone is light, the story has plenty of depth. The romance is zany, but tender and sweet. I loved both main characters and enjoyed watching their relationship develop while they also experienced a lot of personal growth along the way.

And to put the cherry on the cake- this is a book anyone can enjoy. I am really enjoying the swing away from explicit sex scenes. This is such a breath of fresh air!!

I can’t wait to read the second installment!

Thanks to Gallery Books for the early review copy!

This book was kind of my breaking point in wishing that romance books came with ratings because I was expecting angst and steamy scenes in this but there's only one fade-to-black scene. So from now on, I'm rating romance books in my reviews, and this is definitely rated G.

I enjoyed this book mainly because it was written better than a lot of romance books I've been reading. The writing was actually very nice and I never found myself caught up with cheesy dialogue or wishing something had been explained better; it was consistently pleasant, which isn't to say it was amazing, but it never hindered my reading experience. I also loved the premise of this book and the main character. Following the POV of a CEO and hearing her story of being a badass and a self-starter, especially in a male-dominated business world of NYC. I loved Naomi immediately. Her backstory set up an actually compelling story behind the enemies to lovers element of the plot that I found believable and also justifiable for her to have held a grudge all those years and still consider him trash.

But though the things I enjoyed about this book were plenty, other things I wasn't so much a fan of. Firstly, the pacing of this book just didn't capture me, and I think it's a me thing and not anything the book itself did (see: there was very little actual romance/kissing/sex in this to drive my attention). I initially liked that this book focused equally on Naomi's work, friends, and romance, but by the end of the book I found myself skimming for the romance. Maybe I'm biased because I was just in the mood for some lovin, but nothing really drove the story from any of those other parts of her life, which made her drama with Oliver more elevated. I just found I wasn't super eager to pick up this book, hence why it took me over a week to read whereas I normally read romane books in less than a day.

This isn't to say that the romance wasn't good. I LOVED Oliver and their banter was so witty and, again, driven by that enemies to lovers vibe that I find so addicting and great. I just didn't really care about the plot that surrounded them, which is a shame because I think the book being about a CEO was important, yet the setting of her actually working as that CEO was a bit dry. In a way, it felt like the plot of this book got side lined to make room for the romance, but the romance itself didn't really deliver on angst or steaminess, so nothing was left to keep my attention.

Even so, I think this book provides a fun and empowering story with a healthy relationship that readers of non-explicit romance might enjoy more than I did. I don't think I'll finish this series, but I would definitely read more by this author if I were promised some steamy scenes.

If the kiss on Saturday had been the promise, this was the delivery. The sort of kiss that ruined a girl for all other kisses in the future.

I’ve been a fan of Lauren Layne’s writing for several years now. I haven’t always loved every story she’s written, but the ratio of her books that I love definitely outweigh the ones that I did not. ”PASSION ON PARK AVENUE” went at a very slow pace for almost the first half of the book. I was worried that this was going to go on the shelf of books that I just couldn’t connect with but, I do love this author, so I stuck it out. Thankfully, the pace started to pick up during the second half of the book and I really did enjoy the story. This is an ”enemies to lovers” story that began when the Hero and Heroine were just young children. So many years have gone by since they last saw each other but it seems that one of them wasn’t able to move on from the past.

At the heart of the ”Central Park Pact” series is the friendship that develops between three women who find out at the funeral of the man they each were involved with that, he was a lying womanizer. Instead of tearing each other down, they form a bond and make a pact to help to steer each other away from the “bad boys”.

Our first Heroine to find love is Naomi Powell, a self-made billionaire. She, unlike her two new friends, came from impoverished beginnings. She lived with her single mother who made so many poor life choices. For a brief portion of her life, she lived in a luxurious apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, on Park Avenue, when her mom got a job as a live-in maid. The couple had a son who was a few years older than Naomi and lived to bully her. When her mother ends up having an affair with the man of the house it eventually ends disastrously and Naomi and her mom are kicked out on to the streets. Naomi never forgot how horribly the family treated her and her mother. Fast forward to present times, and Naomi has a shot at buying an apartment in that very building on Park Avenue. Turns out that the son and father still live there and she can’t help but want to throw her success in their faces. But as she gets to know Oliver, who is no longer the bully she knew from childhood, she starts to question the grudge she’s been holding on to for so many years.

Oliver was the perfect book boyfriend. He was sexy, smart, and self-sacrificing. His father was a horrible person for most of his life but when he was inflicted with Alzheimer’s, Oliver didn’t hesitate to put his life on hold to take care of him. This guy was a saint!

The thing is, when Naomi moves in, she is going by a different last name and Oliver doesn’t recognize her as his nemesis from childhood, and so she doesn’t reveal her identity to him. I had a hard time warming up to her but when she starts to form a bond with Oliver’s father, my heart softened towards her as well.

Naomi isn’t a believer in true love. Life has shown her that men are only after her for one thing and she believes that she will always be the “other woman”. Will her unwillingness to open her heart to love cause her to lose her true soul mate? When Oliver finds out Naomi’s true identity, will he still feel the same?

Here are my overall ratings:

Hero: 5
Heroine: 4
Plot: 4
Angst: 4
Steam: 3
Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 4.5

Lauren Layne's Passion on Park Avenue is the first book in her Central Park Pact series. It's the start of a fun trilogy about love, sex, friendship, and finding your way.

Naomi Powell has come a long way from her childhood, where her mother worked as a housekeeper in a prestigious building on the Upper East Side until one day she lost her job and they were forced out on the streets. Naomi is the CEO of a tremendously successful jewelry and accessories company she built herself, and she doesn’t feel she has anything to prove to anyone.

And then she finds she is in the running for a condo in the building where her mother once worked. Suddenly she wants to show these high-society snobs what she’s made of herself. She’s thrown for a loop when she realizes one of the residents is Oliver Cunningham, the son of the family her mother once worked for, whom Naomi blames for the rapid downturn of their lives all those years ago.

She’s bent on revenge, but she can’t help but be attracted to him at the same time. Damn him for being gorgeous and infuriating. She wants to let Oliver and his father know who she is and that she still is angry for what transpired years ago, but she’s unsure what her next move should be. And then there’s also an attractive producer trying to convince her to let him adapt her life story into a television movie, which is both a flattering and terrifying idea.

Meanwhile, Naomi and her two closest friends—who meet in quite an interesting way after discovering a very unique thing in common—try to navigate how to find Mr. Right instead of Mr. Absolutely Wrong. They've promised to protect each other from winding up with someone horrible.

This is such an enjoyable book and a super-quick read. I actually read the second book in this series, Love on Lexington Avenue , before this one and it really didn’t mess things up. It’s lighthearted, sexy, and lots of fun—kind of a Sex and the City but less pretentious, not superficial, and less steamy.

Can’t wait to read the third and final book in the series, Marriage on Madison Avenue !

Since the day he’d met her, she’d gotten under his skin, pissed him off, confused the hell out of him, and he was damn grateful for it. Naomi Powell had brought him back to life...

The premise to this series is absolutely; three women realize they've been sleeping with the same man at his funeral, not realizing he's been married the entire time. There's two unknowing mistresses and the wife, who form a fascinating bond when they accidentally meet each other. I loved seeing these women not at each other's throats and being catty, but rather putting the blame squarely on the shoulders of the lying and cheating man, where it rightfully belongs. But I digress...

Passion on Park Avenue introduces us to mistress number one, Naomi. Once a girl on the wrong side of the tracks and the poor daughter of a maid that cleaned apartments on Park Avenue. Now Naomi is a strong and fiery successful business owner that can afford any apartment she wants. But then a peculiar happenstance lands her on the waiting list for an apartment in the exact building where her mother used to work and also the place that changed both of their lives forever. It also lands her in front of the boy that made her life a living hell that's now turned into a man that she's desperately fighting her attraction to.

Oliver is absolutely perfection. Lauren Layne has written the quintessential nice guy but with plenty of broken edges that you can't help but fall for. Oliver is just trying to adjust to his new normal after losing his mom to cancer and now dealing with his father's Alzheimer's diagnosis. Oliver doesn't know why the woman sitting across from him in the apartment interview for the building he lives at is looking at him with so much animosity. All he knows is that he's inexplicably drawn to her, no matter how much she sasses him.

Admittedly, while I understood Naomi's grudge towards Oliver, I struggled with her inability to tell him who she was. I didn't feel that this should have been something that was dragged for the entirety of the book. I struggled truly connecting to her reasoning pst the halfway mark. I did absolutely loved their slow burn road back to each other again. Two kids that hated each other years ago, now are the perfect match as adults. I loved the slower pacing of the relationship development and the additional peeks into Oliver and who he was then and who he is now. He was honestly my favorite part of the boom. I also really loved the friendship between the women and the camaraderie that they all share.

I really enjoyed the story but I also couldn't help but wish there was slightly a little more romance. This is most definitely a slow burn, but I didn't feel like we get enough when they finally DO get together to satisfy my romance cravings. This missed the typical sensual sizzle that Layne's book usually have and I couldn't help but wish we got that here. Ultimately this was still a wonderfully entertaining read that I enjoyed from beginning to finish and I eagerly anticipate the next books in this series.

I usually don't go for romance books that look like, well, this.

Contemporary romance isn't my thing, but even if it was, rich white lady problems don't really interest me. However, Passion on Park Avenue turned out to be a bit better than I was expecting.

I didn't like the cheesy set-up in the first few chapters, but it got better as it went along. I liked Naomi's shifting viewpoints on Oliver and his dad, and I loved the sexual tension, but I think she kept her secret for way, WAY too long. I also thought that there were some issues that were dropped and left unresolved, which irked me a little. And waaaay too many descriptions of designer clothes for my tastes, personally.

Though I liked it but didn't love it, I would still recommend this to friends who like easy reading contemporary romance. It was a fun, summer-readish way to pass a few hours, and it made me intrigued to read this author's backlist.

At the end I cried, not because the book was sad, but because it was so sweet!

As a reader, I adore love-hate romances, but this one swept me off my feet in a rare way.

What I loved the most was the total un-bastardy quality of the leading man, Oliver, the best male lead ever written. Usually with enemies-to-lovers story it’s easy to make the guy a bit gruff, or rudish at first (as a writer I’m guilty of that myself.) But not Oliver. He was kind, hot, sexy, witty, smart... He’s the kind of man that makes your reader skin burn and without a single sexy scene, it was all in the gestures, gazes, smart comebacks. Really, I’m swooning so much!

This book had the perfect balance between banter, sweet romance, a dose of real-life hardships without being too sad, and a bit of bling (never out of place in a romcom.)

This is my first book from Lauren Layne, but it’s definitely not going to be my last. I’m thrilled she has a bit of a backlist I can binge while I wait for the next book in the series.

This is one of my all-time favorite romcoms.

Updated January 2021:

I liked this more the second time around! Still super cute, but I think going into it knowing how it ended let me connect to the characters more. Still sad that it's fade to black though 😂

---

This was super cute! My only issue was that I never really connected with the characters, and it made the ending seem kind of...abrupt? Yeah, I think that's the word I'm going with.

(If you're looking for a smutty romance, this definitely isn't it.)

This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart

Review copy was received from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I’ve read a number of Lauren Layne (LL) books somewhere between eighteen and twenty and there are a few things I’ve come to expect.  I always expect a thoroughly enjoyable story, an eventual HEA, a group of fun friends that are pretty hilarious and one or two steamy sex scenes.  Passion in the Park had most of this, except when it came time for the sex scene, it was completely fade to black. I think that was the most surprising thing in this book, since it made the ‘Passion’ in the Park feel almost young adult or Harlequin.

But moving onto the actual story of how Naomi and Oliver eventually fell in love. Naomi and Oliver actually met as children, young children, around the age boys are awful and pull girl's hair.  Oliver used to call her carrots and he told a lie that got her and her mother kicked out of the apartment on Park Avenue. They struggled to survive for years after that, fast-forward a few decades later and Naomi has made herself into a strong business woman and the head of her self made company.   It seems she still has a bit of a chip on her shoulder about how she grew up.

Naomi is all set to move when she gets an invitation to interview for an apartment in a super exclusive apartment on Park Avenue, the very same one she and her mother were kicked out of once.  Intrigued by whatever possessed her mother to submit an application on her behalf, Naomi goes to the interview and sees none other than the hair pulling boy all grown up; she recognizes him but he has no idea who she is.

Naomi is an interesting character in that she is holding on very tightly to her roots and hasn’t really accepted where she came from.  Most of the time she projects confidence, but closure on that part of her life seems important too. Only the boy she used to know is quite a different man, and his father whom she blames for most of the situation with childhood is a shadow of the man he once was.  The closure she is looking for, just might be more of a new beginning.

Like always, LL has a fun cast of characters written into her book.  I really liked the girl posse that was created by a very unusual circumstance.  Naomi with her two female besties is fantastic. They are what every girl needs to bolster her up in this unfamiliar time in her life.  Oliver is so likeable; I think that has a lot to do with his family situation at the moment and how he is handling it.

Overall, I liked a lot of things in the story.  I think the steaminess of the romance would have worked so much better if the sex scene wasn’t fade to black.  But I like the family dynamic explored here between Oliver and his father that eventually included Naomi too.

Passion on Park Avenue is a fun, breezy romance about Naomi moving into the fancy apartment building she had once lived in during her youth and coming face-to-face with her childhood nemesis Oliver. He had tormented her when they were both children, but has now grown into a gorgeous, kind man.

The main conflict of this story is Naomi's grudge against Oliver for his younger transgressions and her wanting to show him that she's finally made it. Sure, Naomi's grudge is overblown and silly, and she comes across as rather petty for having held onto it for so long. But overlooking that, this book hits all the right notes as a lighthearted summer read.

This first book also introduces us to Naomi's friends, who will each get their own romantic stories coming up in the series, so I look forward to reading those once they are released.

4 The Stars of Something Different Stars
* * * * Spoiler Free
Lauren Layne understands how to present a series. She draws you in and takes you on an adventure. Her use of New York City and its cultural views have always set the feel of what was to come. If the series is living in Manhattan then we know Layne will use it to be a major part of the tale. Because in my mind and my time living there...There is nothing like Manhattan! There is this energy which will become part of you and you will remember it always.

When an author decides to do a series, there has to be something to link all of the books. With this series, Layne created something unique, something which was more than a "Cute Meet".
She created a situation which brought together three women who had something very unusual in common. She had them all deciding not to attend an event, to end up on a Central Park bench realizing what tied them together and dealt with it in a compassionate way towards all of them.

This realization of what each of these different unique women had dealt with laid the foundation of friendship between them. They decided to look out for one another so that they Never fall for what happened before. Each of these women was capable, strong, and brought their special talents to the group. We are intrigued and want them to flourish.

This first entry focuses on Naomi Powell, the self-made entrepreneur who has one of the up and coming accessory/jewelry company. This is a woman who was never made to feel as if success was part of her future. Oh, her mother was an advocate for her but the circumstances of her life lessons were not those of most CEOs. Her mother was a maid to a family living on Park Ave so Naomi would be there but not allowed to feel as if she belonged. There was a boy who would torture her, tease her, and make her life difficult.

Then the boy did something even more horrible, something unforgivable. He lied and that lie changed everything for her and her mother. The impact of this planted the seed of revenge...something which festered and grew deep inside Naomi.

Now Naomi is very successful and is looking to move into her next apartment/condo. As she looks throughout the city, she receives a call saying the same location where she lived where her mother worked, has an opening and her interview with the board is upcoming.
Stunned and later finding out how her name was listed, Naomi decides to meet just to experience it.

Oliver Cunningham does not have time to interview a potential buyer of the available apartment in the building. The fact that he has grown up in the building and has 2 apartments shouldn't have anything to do with it. The way he was pushed to meet with this possible neighbor made it impossible for him not to...So here he is sitting across a desk from a woman who seems to hate him without even knowing him!

Naomi couldn't believe this was happening...There plain as day was her nemesis, Oliver Cunningham, all grown up and becoming this annoyingly handsome intelligent man. Oh, and on top of it...He has No Idea who she is...that she is the little girl he tormented and changed her life with his lies.

Lauren Layne gives us a story that looks at the idea of revenge when one has grown, presents another view, and allows the idea of love between two people who never thought it would be presented this way. Each of these characters had very deep backstories that formed their perceptions and who they were. It is the coming together which allows them to blossom and grow to be who they are meant to be.

The added bonuses in this book are the other women supporting Naomi. We are given a taste here and there which causes us to be interested in the upcoming stories. The next one, Love on Lexington Avenue, will be coming soon.

3.5 stars - Passion on Park Avenue is a quick and engaging read but I would definitely categorize it as women's fiction instead of romance. It made me feel nostalgic for my college years when I would devour books by Candace Bushnell, Sophie Kinsella and Plum Sykes. Our main character, Naomi, is a compelling self-starter who grew up in the Bronx, got a brief taste of life on the Upper East Side before being plunged back into poverty, and completely turned her life around by starting a successful accessory company. She meets her two best friends in the beginning of the story in a very unconventional way and while there was the potential for the three women to become immediate enemies, they instead came to trust and support each other. Naomi is wrestling with some skeletons in her closet when she moves into a new apartment on Park Avenue, next door to Oliver Cunningham, the man who stands for everything she despises. But of course, there's much more to their story than meets the eye. Oliver is the primary caretaker for his father who's suffering from Alzheimer's, and never takes time for himself. The pair run hot and cold and I was so drawn in by their will they / won't they tension. I also love that the book is set in NYC (a 2020 goal of mine is to read more books set in my city), and while there was a bit of label dropping, it wasn't over the top and didn't distract from the story in any way. I'm very much looking forward to continuing the series (book two is being delivered today!) and completely unrelated from my rating, but these are some of my favorite book covers ever!

I’ve read quite a few LL books and she never disappoints! I love her style of writing, her use of humor and snark and her ability to create fun, relatable characters that you like instantly. This is the first in a new series following a group of new friends living in NYC and I’m so excited to see where things are headed next.

From the first chapter I was hooked, Naomi meets two new potential friends in the most bizarre way, think the opposite of a romantic meet cute, except it is kind of cute. Anyway, it was a solid way to reel me in and get me invested in these women and their lives and their friendship may have been unlikely but it feels fun and genuine. On the romance side of things is the good old enemies to lovers trope, why do I love this tried and true storyline so much?! I think it’s because if it’s executed well there’s always amazing chemistry and witty banter and LL has that down pat. Oliver was exactly the kind of leading man that I like, charming and smart, a little reserved but you just know there’s more to him than meets the eye.

I got serious Christina Lauren vibes from this one and that’s a huge compliment from me cause I’m obsessed with them, but with less sex. That appeals to me though, I like all the sweet parts in a romance novel and don’t really need the steam. This isn’t totally clean but it’s pretty damn close, so keep that in mind depending on your personal preferences. Overall a fabulous read, I think it’s her best yet and I can’t wait for the second book!

Cute and fun with a touch of angst. Interesting premise and good use of the enemies-to-lovers trope. I liked Layne’s 21 Wall Street Series better, but this was still a quick, easy read that had you turning pages and escaping for a few hours.

I felt that Naomi's grudge was a little overblown (they were children when it happened, and I think blaming Oliver for everything was a little much). Still I enjoyed the tension it created between the two. We are introduced to two of Naomi friends who I assume the next books in the series are about and there are hints of who their love interests will be, which I hope pan out.

I received an advanced copy through Netgalley in return for an honest review.

Passion on Park Avenue was fun and flirty! I absolutely adored the characters and I loved that this book had one of my favorite tropes ever, love to hate. It had a Sex and the City vibe and the way the story unfolded made it feel like a movie was playing in my head. With laugh out loud humor and moments that kept me smiling, this book was so easy to devour. So if you adore cute romance stories that also hold an emotional edge, definitely add this one to your tbr!
She gave him an icy glare and turned away, but he grabbed her arm, a little surprised by his own action. Still, he didn’t let her go. “I’m not a bad guy, Naomi.”
Naomi remained stubbornly silent before letting her gaze drop deliberately to where he held her arm.

From the moment we met Naomi Powell, I liked her! She was a hard worker and created her billion dollar business all by herself. She was kind yet she was jaded from her past. She always wanted to prove her worth to the Upper East Side. So when she ended up getting an apartment with her dream address, her goal seemed within her grasp. Except her neighbor was the son from the family her mother use to work for. And when they were kids, Oliver Cunningham was ruthless to her.
She couldn’t resist a quick glance back over her shoulder, but Oliver had already closed the door, shutting her out.
It was just as she wanted, and yet . . . it wasn’t at all.

While Oliver was horrible to Naomi as a kid, he had changed as an adult. Oliver was the sweetest guy ever. He had a huge heart, he put others happiness above his own and he was so kind. His words and his gestures easily melted my heart. But I loved that he had another side to him since he could be charming and seductive. Oliver definitely didn't have any problems putting himself out there and I loved how he took control of some of their situations, sigh.
And just as Naomi was pep-talking herself that she wasn’t jealous, that she didn’t care that he didn’t even seem to be aware of her, Oliver glanced over and caught her eye. And winked.
And she knew, with that one should- have-been-cheesy-but-was-unbearably-sexy wink, that he was right.
She was attracted. They did have a thing.
And she didn’t have a clue what to do about it.

While Naomi wanted to hate Oliver and his life, it wasn't anything like she thought it would be. But regardless, her memories tainted how she viewed him. Naomi kept seeing Oliver as the child who ruined her life. Even though he showed her again and again what a good guy he was. And while she held onto those thoughts, it all led to some fabulous banter. Especially since Oliver had no clue who she was. And when some of their banter was sexually charged, you couldn't knock the grin off my face!
Naomi extended her right hand. “Hands in, girls, we’re making a pact, high school–style. May neither of you ever fall victim to a cheating bastard again. Not on my watch.”
And to helping each other find the right man. That’s on my watch,”Audrey said, placing her palm on top of Naomi’s hand.
After a moment of hesitation, Claire set her hand atop Audrey’s. “Oh, what the hell. I’m in. To no more assholes.”

One of the huge gems I always love reading about in LL's books are the friendships. Audrey and Claire were beyond fabulous and I quickly connected with them too! And while I can't wait for Audrey's story, the moment something was said, I just knew Claire's story would be next. I can't wait to pick it up! But there was a difference between this book and the 24 other LL books I have read. This story faded to black. Personally I love getting more because Lauren Layne writes the best sex scenes! She is truly gifted with writing moments that are classy but beyond scorching hot. So while I was sad that wasn't the case with this story, I'll know going into the next books exactly what to expect.
“Screw it,” he muttered, taking a step toward her.
She instinctively stepped back, even as her heart pounded.
“Wait. Wait. You don’t even like me,” Naomi said quickly.
He smiled. “Wrong. You don’t like me. I’ve never said a damn thing about not liking you.”

Passion on Park Avenue would make the perfect movie that I'd binge again and again! It was funny and sweet, while also holding some more emotional moments. And between the friendship, banter and jealousy this book was so entertaining. So yes, I definitely recommend this book!

3.5 'Solving the puzzle' Stars!
ARC provided by the author via Netgalley.

A new series from Lauren Layne about love stories in the city that never sleeps? Oh yeah, as you probably know I definitely got curious since I enjoy everything this woman writes! I am always excited when Lauren starts a new series and after reading this book, I can say I am surely ready for the other two books. I do have to say though, even though I loved this new crew of characters, I found myself a bit underwhelmed after finishing this story, I was just expecting a bit more.

Passion on Park Avenue is the first installment in Lauren's new series called Central Park Pact and it is focused on three women who meet in Central Park after discovering they were involved with the same man. They decide to make a pact and stop each other from falling for bad boys ever again. Naomi Powell is the protagonist of this book and she is a self-made woman, proud of what she has achieved. Her past though is still on her mind, especially when she moves in next to the people that ruined it. Oliver Cunningham does not remember her but he is decided to found all the pieces in her puzzle. Will they be able to leave the past behind and fall in love?

"It's hard for you, huh?" he said with faux sympathy.
"What?"
"Dealing with your attraction to me."

So, this book is definitely slow paced. The slow burn is definitely there and very well developed. The chemistry between Oliver and Naomi is beautiful when it finally starts showing. But, in my opinion, it took too long to appear. Their actual "relationship" takes too much to start and I definitely missed the climax of that slow burn. Passion on Park Avenue is surely on the sweet, lower steam side. I missed seeing more of these two as a couple, I missed having some sexy times (because I adore how Lauren writes them) and everything felt rushed in the end to me.

Did I enjoy the story? Of course I did! I loved the characters, I loved the couple and I loved the theme and how it is focused in New York. I loved the friendship between Naomi, Audrey and Claire and I loved already seeing the other two heroes too (Scott and Clarke). I loved what I saw of Oliver and Naomi actually together but I wanted more. I missed seeing more their interactions as a couple and the romantic and sensual side of their relationship. Still, I enjoyed the story as a whole and I am curious to read the next two in the series.

To give them a chance, he needed to get them beyond the walls of 517 Park Avenue, to show her -to show himself- that they could make it in the real world.

Therefore, my rating for Passion on Park Avenue is 3.5 STARS. You all know my reasons by now if you have read the whole review. A sweet, slow paced love story of hate to love in Lauren Layne's style! I enjoyed it but I expected more. The slow burn was so great and I wanted the explosion of that chemistry and feelings more developed. As I said, I still will check out the other stories because I want to read what happens with Audrey and Clarke and Claire and Scott.

3.5 rounded up!.
.
.
This was my first book by Lauren and it's the first book in the Central Park Pack series. I thought this book was a cute read. It's about Naomi Powell, who is CEO of one of the biggest jewelry companies in the country. She did not grow up like that though. She was raised in the Bronx. Now living in Manhattan, some still treat her as an "outsider"!
.
This book is about Naomi as a character, and her life and what has happened in her past that has made her who she is today! I loved Naomi in this story, and learning more about how she got to where she is! It has romance as an "enemies to lovers" trope! It has to do with new friends, and the strange way they became friends. Don't want to spoil it for you so I'll say that this did feel to me more like chick lit, than romance. The romance is there though, just not in a huge way. This is one that chick lit, romcom, and romance fans won't want to miss! A light,and enjoyable read! This book is already available.
.
I will definitely be reading the next in the series "Love On Lexington Avenue" that will be out in September!

I was into this for most of the story. I liked Naomi and Oliver and I liked how they both had to overcome their backgrounds to be the people they are—and the people that could be so good together.

It drags a bit in the middle as the only thing really keeping Naomi from going with her attraction to Oliver is her memory of the boy he was when he was ten. Those memories can sting, so I get that. At the same time, nobody is who they were at ten and that's not so complicated to figure out as she kept making it.

And since this is a secret-keeping story, too (Oliver doesn't recognize her so doesn't know they knew each other before) and that made me anxious. I've been thinking about secret-keeping stories a lot lately (in no small part because Melissa and I were talking about them) and often, the problem is that keeping secrets speaks to a person's character. And few authors with secret-keeping stories want to own up to what keeping those secrets really means. Naomi being hurt by events from her background holds together. We see a couple of flinch moments where something innocently meant causes her to shut down in ways that are unexpected to Oliver and that part works. But continuing to keep that secret is a degree of cowardice that I don't think fits in with that insecurity and nothing else in her character is at all weak. Yes, she flinches when blind-sided by something. But she also takes things on and confronts bad behavior and is willing to forgive and to be kind. All of which is undermined by keeping this secret that she knows can blow up in her face. And no, it doesn't help that Layne has her . Lampshading has its place, but I think it broke down in this case.

So the secret and resulting dark moment dragged this down from outstanding to merely pleasantly diverting. I still enjoyed the read, but I'm not that excited about it.

No rating on this one for . . . reasons. It's complicated. Which is why there's a link...

A note about Steamy and Chaste: My memory isn't great, but I think this is the first book of Layne's where she "hasn't gone there". There's lead up to sex, some minor nekkidness, and sex happens. But the actual events are off-page. There's enough that this isn't chaste. But not so much that I'd actually call it steamy at all, either. And frankly, I think the story needed to "go there". Their intimacy was very much in question at that point so skipping an intimate moment left unneeded uncertainty in this reader, at least.

I have been a longtime fan of Lauren Layne since her Stiletto series years ago and am literally obsessed with everything she writes. She has a finger on the pulse of what people want and knows how to deliver. Her banter game is strong and one of my favorite things about her stories. Naomi and Oliver were so delicious. I loved their spitfire back and forth banter and the chemistry they had in spades.

I was immediately intrigued by the introduction Layne gave to this series with three women who have joined together (in tragedy) but who turned it around into a positive friendship. Passion on Park Avenue brings us Naomi Powell, who has clawed her way to the top to become one of New York City's wealthiest women. But when she sees blast from the past, and the bane (and bully) of her childhood existence, Oliver Cunningham, all her past inner feelings of inferiority come out.

I really enjoyed this story as Naomi was strong and assertive and very intelligent. While I don't necessarily like secrets in stories, I felt like the story progressed nicely. I love that initially Naomi had plans to show up Oliver but life got in the way and she had to make a choice between holding onto her grudge and her feelings for him. I also liked that in this story there was more of an emphasis on an emotional connection between Naomi and Oliver as it gave her decision more of a believable feel. 5 stars! ~Ratula

Refreshing, clean romance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sometimes it is so refreshing to read a fun, clean story that does not contain loads of drama and issues. I found this book to be a perfect story for a lazy afternoon.
A fast yet touching story that gave me all the feels we look for in a classic romance book. Layne crafted wonderfully complex characters that not only had a heart but reflected so much of what we have in our own lives. My heart broke a bit every time she helped Walter. Made me think about my Dad.
Layne scattered so many layers into this story; unusual friendships, funny scenes, a bit of snark, a bit of heartbreak, and a whole lot of touching moments. Not to mention a super sweet ending and happily ever after.
This is a beautifully wholesome story that will leave you begging for the next installation in the series. Who knows what she will bring us? But I do know, it will be delightful, just like Passion on Park Avenue!
I received a copy of this title via NetGalley. It does not impact my review.
I’m a big fan of Lauren Layne and always look forward to her books. While Passion on Park Avenue was enjoyable, I have to admit I found it a little underwhelming.
I’m going to start with the things I liked:
-I loved Oliver. He was smart and sweet and loyal and I just adored him. I liked his dedication to his family, even though they had their issues. I liked the romance between him and Naomi, even if it was frustrating sometimes.
-I liked Naomi’s new friends, Audrey and Claire. We actually don’t see as much of them as I expected, but I’m interested in both of their upcoming stories.
-While Lauren Layne is one of my favorite Romance authors, my usual complaint with her books is that there are always a few scenes more graphic than I care for. I’m so happy to report that that was not the case with this book! There’s innuendo and suggestive talk, but there are no sex scenes and I really appreciated it. I thought it put the romantic focus much more on emotions and actual relationship details instead of just physical stuff and I found it much more meaningful.
Ok, so now onto the things that didn’t quite work for me:
-For a good long while in this book, I did not like Naomi at all. She just came across so shallow to me. Everything was just about status and money and expensive stuff and I just couldn’t care about it. Also, her big revenge plan was to move back into her old apartment building and then let her mom’s former employer and his son know who she was and how she had as much money as them now. I wasn’t really sure what that would accomplish? It’s not like she was buying the building and kicking them out. Or buying their business out from under them. It just didn’t make a lot of sense to me.
-I also thought Naomi was an odd choice for the first book in the series. She was that brash character that always speaks her mind, even if it could be hurtful. The kind of character that is usually the main character’s best friend that you don’t really like until she gets her own book and then you get to know her better. I did eventually like her, but it took me awhile. I’m much more interested in Claire and Audrey’s stories (particularly Audrey and Clarke).
-One of the subplots include the development of a tv show based on Naomi’s rags to riches story. I found that interesting, but thought it could have been explored much more than it was.
Overall, I did enjoy Passion on Park Avenue. I liked the friendship and Oliver and how the romance focused more on the relationship than on the physical stuff. I felt like not a whole lot really happened in the story, though, and it took me a really long time to start caring about Naomi, so I’m giving this a little lower rating than I do most Layne books. However, I am definitely looking forward to the next books in this series.
Overall Rating (out of 5): 3 Stars
I liked some aspects of this story but for the most part, it just wasn’t clicking for me. I found the relationship the three women formed extremely awkward. I never got that feeling of bonding between them, it just felt odd to me. They'd make jokes about their connection and it felt incredibly stilted and fell flat.
I did like Naomi and Oliver but it was such a light, slow burn romance with nothing major happening that I never really felt their connection. I liked their interactions, they could be sweet, but it was lacking that want and need. This is not my first time reading Lauren Layne, she’s one of my favorites, so I went into this expecting fun and fresh and sexy. For me, that was not this.
It took me a while to get into the story and I spent the first half wondering if I should DNF. However, I was invested enough that I wanted to know what would happen so I stuck with it. It's not super descriptive and some thing's felt like a footnote or glossed over. I didn't warm up to Naomi until the end, she's a pretty brash character that could hold a major grudge and it almost felt over the top. Towards the end, she softened and I liked her much more. That’s when her personality shined.
The story wasn’t bad, it just wasn't for me. I was missing the fun and the heat and playfulness.
How freaking CUTE was this book!? Lauren Layne has yet to disappoint me with her fabulous contemporary romances, and Passion on Park Avenue, the first in her new Central Park Pact series, is no different. I had such a fun time with Naomi and Oliver, as well as the women Naomi makes a pact with: Claire and Audrey. The series centers around these three women who had a relationship with a man… unknowingly at the same time. I loved that they made the most of it and became such good friends. I adored this start to a new series!
I know I can always count on LL to deliver a feel-good yet meaningful contemporary romance with a strong heroine and swoony hero. Naomi is the rags-to-riches CEO of a jewelry company she started from the ground up. She thought she had the perfect life, career, and boyfriend… until that boyfriend died, and it turns out not only was he married, he also had another girlfriend in addition to Naomi. Lauren Layne could’ve taken the women’s first meeting in all sorts of directions, but I loved the one she took: Naomi, Claire (the wife), and Audrey (the other girlfriend) bond and make a pact to help each other when it comes to seeing men for who they are. This girl-bond is probably my favorite part of this book. They are all so loving, sarcastic, and supportive of each other – everyone needs friends like these women!
Now onto the romance… The chemistry between Oliver and Naomi is delicious. There’s a bit of hate-to-love going on, with lots of great banter and sexual tension. I wouldn’t say this book is incredibly steamy, but LL knows how to write tension! All of their scenes were so much fun to read, and I even loved Oliver’s grandfather, who has Alzheimer’s.
Passion on Park Avenue is a quick and delightful read. I zipped through it so fast and easily. Fans of the author will definitely have fun with Naomi and Oliver. It’s the perfect summer-y read and I can’t wait for the next two books!
Genre: More Chick Lit than Romance
Actual Rating: 4 stars
Passion on Park Avenue is the first book in the Central Park Pact! Each of the books in the series CAN stand alone as they feature different characters however, I recommend reading this one FIRST as you get to know how these ladies became friends. Also, it's such a cute story that I don't think readers are going to want to miss it! That being said, I feel like this book falls better within the chick lit category than it does romance. The reason being is that the book is more centered around female growth than the romance. Sure, there is romance but it is light and not really the main focus. I think the focus of the story is more on Naomi than her relationships. Either way, romance readers and chick lit readers will get a kick out this one! It's lighthearted, fun, and motivational!
Naomi is the main character of the story here and she was such a great one to learn about! I love her "rags to riches" story and how even though she has built her own empire, she still appreciates where she came from. The book focuses a lot on how her past affects her character today and even has a little bit of a second chance love story even though the two HATED each other when they were kids. The book is on the sweeter side, there is no explicit sex, just casual mentions of it, but some hot and heavy make out sessions to swoon over! I think those who prefer their books to be "clean" will enjoy this one.
Oliver is another MC in the story and I really came to love him despite his family and the way they treated people in the past (like 20 years ago). Oliver though, is nothing like the people who brought him up so it was refreshing to see that individuality shines though the pages. The little twist in the story effects Oliver and his (almost) love, but thankfully his character is very open minded and can see past a little white lie.
Without giving too much away I will end my review there. If you are looking for a sweet read this is certainly a book I would recommend. I can't wait to read the next one in the series! These ladies are pretty fantastic and the way they came together is amazing! This book screams girl power and I look forward to seeing how it effects the rest of the ladies!
Passion on Park Avenue was a mixed bag for me. I did really enjoy parts, but other parts were annoying. Be warned, some of this review is kind of spoilery.
Loved Oliver! He was honest, sweet, and patient. My heart went out to him going from losing his mother to cancer to having his dad develop Alzheimer’s and being responsible for his care. On the other hand, I had issues with Naomi holding onto a grudge, especially when you consider Oliver was ten years old when the event happened. I mean come on, grow up! At least let the guy know where he went wrong and let him have a chance to be sorry and explain. Instead this ridiculous grudge/revenge thing went on WAY too long. Can’t really get behind a relationship with the heroine keeps this kind of secret grudge to herself most of the book. When she did soften towards Oliver it was late in the game and she was scared to come clean and ruin things between them. Thankfully, when things blew up (because you just know they will) it was short lived. I did warm to Naomi, especially when she was so nice to Walter. She treated him with kindness and heart when he really didn’t deserve it.
I enjoyed the chemistry between Oliver and Naomi, but inevitably as soon as something would begin between the two Naomi would be reminded somehow of why she hated Oliver and his family and turn up the frost. I did feel sorry for Naomi over what happened, and can understand why she was so profoundly wounded, but Oliver had clearly changed after so many years. And who hasn’t been awful at some point in their childhood? One event caused a lot of heartache for Naomi, but her mother was also very much to blame for what happened, Oliver and his family were only partly to blame, IMO.
Also, wasn’t a fan of the brand-name dropping, which was so over-the-top at the beginning I almost DNF’d. Thankfully, it tapered off, but still, the lifestyles of the rich and famous are a little hard to relate to sometimes.
As a side note, the narration was excellent!
