Doing what’s right made so many things wrong.

I had to get Jack - no question. I just didn’t realize bringing him home would require so much trust from everyone.

When that trust is strained, we all suffer.

I’ll protect what’s mine, but my team’s bonds are being tested. Threats are suddenly everywhere - inside our magical barrier, inside our safe house, and even inside my mind.

Our enemies are closing in, and we can’t hide much longer.

My men called me Queen once, and now I know what we’re going to need to win this battle.

I’m Carlyle Licorne, and I’m ready to claim who I am.

Okay, Dair is totally hott! He seems so sophisticated and in control,, yet he has this amazing vonurable side to him. Yep, I'm totally sold, Dair's my favourite. ;) The story itself was also interesting with the arrival of Allaron, and damn has this author created a creepy villan in The Ring Master.

I'm done with this series now. I guess there's nothing objectively wrong with it, but I really started to dislike the MC, and it took me daaaays to finish the last 10% of the book. This is supposed to be an RH romance series, but I don't feel the romance. The MC, Carlyle, is 50% focused on the pleasure of sex and 50% focused on the power that sex gives her. When she talks about wanting one of the guys, she never talks about an aspect of their personalities. There was nothing like "Dair is such a good listener; I wish I could talk to him right now." Anytime she bemoaned the fact that a relationship wasn't where she wanted it to be, it was because she either wanted to sleep with the guy or wanted his power. Even worse, some of the guys are concerned about the issue, and they act like she's resolved it even though she basically confirmed that she's exactly like they fear she is. I'm tired of her and her greed because the greed isn't based or even supported by love. It's just greed.

PROGRESS UPDATES
15% "One by one, each one smiled and rested his hands on me, pulling me into their true center, until I was like the moon pulling her stars close." That's . . . That's not how that works. I really hope the author is trying to set something up, like Carlyle will later learn that their dynamics aren't what she thought they were. That's just annoying otherwise.

Here are my reviews and ratings of the other books that I read in the series before I dropped it:
(1) Piece of Dragon ★★★
(2) Piece of Shifter ★★★

In LOVE with this series!!

I love love love this series. This book was awesome! It seemed to have a little less heartache than the last two (but it wasn’t unicorns farting rainbows) and was so very VERY hot. We’ve reached a major point in the story and I’m so interested to see how it goes! Cant wait for the next funny, sweet, sexy, snarky story!

We finally get to meet Toro, the merman, and of course Carlyle finally bonds with Dair, the mage. This book had some steamy scenes, including some MM action. Every relationship was being worked at, though problems were also close. New villains became known and it was yet unclear what were their ultimate goals.

I loved the character growth and relationship development, even though at times I wanted to hit some of the characters.

So good! Couldn't put it down. I didn't even realize I was at the end till it happened haha. It was a sad moment for me. The sex scenes are hot AF, love the way your mind works Laurel. So happy Toro is ok and on his way to jumping the Qulin bandwagon. The story is getting intense and I can't wait for the next one.

Excellent reads. Loving these books. Piece of mage is just as good as the others. Lots of action that keeps you at the edge of your seat.

Loveable characters. Loving all the guys in these books. The RH is brilliant.

Wow!

And she has 3 mates with 3 more to go. What happens in this book is suspenseful, surprising, and includes lots of heat! I'm just glad the next book is out so I don't have to wait.

SO MUCH TO UNPACK.
I’m presently a little too obsessed with this mesmerizing and utterly fabulous series.
I read this gem in a sitting and although I truly tried to savour these books and take my damn time, it’s virtually impossible to put them down.

Car is on route home with Jack after literally giving him back his life through their previously formed mate bond.
Meanwhile back at the house, we get a truly unexpected - and as we come to learn unwelcome - guest..
When I tell you that my actual gut bottomed out at the appearance of Regina the mage.
Ofcourse she’s obsessed with Dair.
“”Good morning, Alisdair,” she said, her voice all husky. She adjusted in her chair, crossing her legs so the robe fell open against her thigh. I was pretty certain she wasn’t wearing anything under it, either.”
Like what a try-hard home-wrecker; I instantly hated her and why did she have to be so fucking stunning??
Too bad it didn’t match her insides though heh.

When Gina confronted Car about Dair, I was legit ready to throw hands; other women drama always makes me incredibly sick and uncomfortable; however, by no means does that stop me from absolutely living for the angst this dynamic brings to the entire situation.
”Your schoolgirl crush on Dair is embarrassing, Carlyle. Qilin are special in their own way, certainly, but his future career as a mage can’t be compromised by an ill-advised mating. You just aren’t his... well, you aren’t his type”

The cherry on top of that shitstorm sundae was that Dair was also being distant and weird; he was giving me so much anxiety, so I obviously just about broke down and wanted to bawl on the spot when he asked Car for SPACE?!
”“I’m sorry,” he whispered, dropping his hand from my arm and stepping back.
“What are you sorry for?” I asked, wishing I didn’t already know.
“I can’t be what you want me to be right now. I need time. Please””

This was so different from his demeanour in the first couple books and really threw me for a loop.
It kept me on my toes that’s for fucking sure.

Jai on a separate note, is also a tough nut to crack.
I know his pull towards Car is there but he struggles in giving us anything tangible.
I was feeling a serious void with Jai and needed more emotion from him.
I needed a gesture.
I needed less coldness.
And DAMN BABY, I GOT IT.
His partially nude shortcake baking in the kitchen just for Car was incredibly sweet.
Their makeout sesh on the other hand, now that was sinfully delicious. The bloodplay is always something I can fuck with.
“I’d never tasted someone’s blood before, and while I didn’t think it would be hot with anyone else, with Jai it was a fucking aphrodisiac like none other”
The slow build-up to her and Jai connecting is agonizingly perfect.
I seriously wouldn’t have it any other way.
Not to mention, I highly doubt these books would be as good as they most certainly are, if all of the guys were like insta-in-love with her.

On the topic of Jai, I’m LOVING the multiple POV. RH relationships this large are impossible to connect with intimately without that aspect; however I’m craving way MORE. Especially from Jai, and Toro. I know their time hasn’t really come yet but I feel like we even need more of the others’ voices intertwined throughout the books.

We’re introduced to a weird eagle dude named Aleron, whom we learn is also a Qilin.
“I had a feeling that as he got closer, I’d be able to see that he had lavender eyes.”
He wants her to himself but we soon find out he’s involved and working for the council of their world.
This becomes evident when he is the reason they all get captured at the end.

Regina trying to make a fucking MOVE on Dair was sickening and so difficult to read through!
“Her voice had dropped low and sultry, and her fingers tugged apart the bow at her waist. The silky robe fell open again, revealing her toned body. She grinned like she’d just called fucking checkmate.
Too bad she wasn’t even on the same board as Carlyle.”

I weeped tears of pure joy when he shut her the fuck down and then proceeded to go home where Car confronted him with her honesty and love.
He broke in that moment for her and it was literal PERFECTION.
“”Forever,” he repeated…“What does that even mean?”
“It means we say no to goodbye instead of yes. It means two heads are better than one, and head is always a great fucking idea””

Their entire relationship dynamic has changed drastically;
especially following their mating at the cabin.
“”Cariño, I am yours, as long as I live.” The words were so much easier to say than I’d ever dreamed, and speaking them felt like shouting my love to the world.”
Sweetest. Fucking. Moment. Ever
AND Gina fucking hated it, so that in itself was a major bonus.

We also get a weird sneak peak at maybe her mother?
And I know that will come into play at some point, which will bring to light many secrets I’m sure.
*steeples fingers*
I’m so ready to sit back and watch it unravel; I have a feeling there are many factors at play, along with a multitude of still unknown players on the game board.
Ofcourse, we can’t forget the ringmaster.
He pops back up at the end when Car and the men are captured, offering Car a wish to have one of her men with her; she chooses Killian, meanwhile the others remain separately locked away.
This brings us into the next book (presumably when Kills mates her, sign me the fuck up), which had been gnawing at my mind the entire time I wrote this review, just begging and pleading with me to start it.
However, I recognize the importance of sharing my love and praise for this wonderful series!

~4.5 stars~

Re-read April 2021
This installment makes the lack of character development glaringly obvious. I feel like the author goes out of the way to point this out. Carlyle and Dair's big issue is that they want the other to want them (not just the magic or sex). So instead of spending time, and getting to know each other...they have sex and get mated. Don't get me wrong, this installment is still steamy, and the mystery is still driving the story, but during the re-read, the holes are bigger.

Kindle Unlimited.
Steamy and fun.

***

Rescuing Jack was just the first step in getting the team back together.

But Carlyle never thought her decision would strain all of their relationships.
Even if she did go against Jai's orders.

The guys are unsure of Jack's trustworthiness, that he is truly on their side.

Toro hasn't shown he can even recognise his friends.

And everyone is stressed.

Threats are everywhere: the Ringmaster, whomever is killing haretians, the Council,...

They are all overworking their powers and skills to ensure their survival.

But their bonds and trust are being tested.

Threats are everywhere.

Even inside the magical barrier protecting their safe house.

Enemies are growing closer and even their minds are not safe.

Notes:

🔸Plot & Weak emotional connection

The plot of the story is okay. Not great.
It has a somewhat interesting storyline but sometimes the characters do chose/take paths that seem weird and not the most logical.

It could be because the emotional connection to the characters is not that great and their background still a bit of an unknown.
So we cannot understand the reasons for some of their choices and it leaves the story lacking.

🔸 Exchanging power

It isn't clear what it really is needed for the power exchange. Is it just touch? Or sexual touch? Or do the ones involved have to have feelings for each other?

And sometimes it does leave a cheap feeling behind the exchange.
Like she only seeks them and their affection to have their power.

🔸Mating

I just want to start by saying I have no problem with RH romances.
As long as its development is believable and there is respect between those involved.

The mating ceremonies seem a bit empty, not showing much for what is supposed to be a very serious and irreversible decision.

As for what they gain from it?
Still unclear.
Is it just Carlyle being able to access their powers? But does she still need to have a make out session with them or does she always have access to her mates' powers?
Confusing.
And the guys do not seem to gain anything...

And a few times it feels like the FMC is simply collecting men. As soon as she gets one she automatically turns to another.
I get they are okay with sharing but... There are no conversations regarding their relationships nor what they are okay with, what they can accept, what could hurt them, or if they are okay with Carlyle being with just their team members or others or not.
So it is like they are okay with the FMC having sex with whomever she wants as she never mentions anything nor talks with her mates before making a move to the next guy.
In fact, they don't talk much about their feelings.

Not much for tooth aching romantic scenes either.
The romance is basically always revolving around sexual interactions.

🔸Favourite scene:

Jai cooking shirtless for Carlyle. 🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️

As always my complete respect for the author and their work.
No hate nor hurt intended with this review.

Alrighty so book 3 has a lot of stuff happen, not all good so be prepared for that! I really felt bad for Carlyle in this one, she was put in such a cage to try and protect her and the baddies were able to get to her anyway! I hope we see her stick up for herself more, she needs to have a bigger role/voice and some of her guys are listening but others are not. That would be my only "complaint".

The side characters in this one were great in terms of their purpose/how the author conveyed their personality haha. I think Regina is the bane of all of our existence but the author and narrators do a really good job making the reader dislike her and hope she gets what's coming to her after treating our Qilin so poorly. I loved Austin and see the kids become more confident and wanting to lear from Carlyle and Jack while they were bunking with them. I very much dislike the newest character, Alleron, and hope he gets his comeuppance soon (I am already on book 4 so that still remains to be seen!!). I am confused by his relationships but hopefully we get more info in future books about what's going on.

In terms of the harem and our favorite unicorn, I was really happy Dair got the thing out of his rear and got his head on straight because I was gonna try and go through my phone while listening and shake him silly haha, you know, if he was real 🤣. I liked seeing Killian come around (him and Sol are 🔥 - I love me some M/M so there is a particular scene that is yummy haha). I liked how Carlyle realized more about her magic, this give and take or the various powers (and their colors!!) and how she can weave them which is really an awesome visual concept. It reminded me of some of my favorite Tamora Pierce books where the various characters had magic and how they would weave them/could visually seem them in themselves, based on their affinity. Big compliment from me, she is one of my all-time favorite authors ❤️. I am intrigued by Toro and am glad his mystery is finally solved, and can't wait to get to know him in future books since we haven't gotten to up til now. I was surprised by Jai, not gonna lie haha. The kitchen scene was perfect, and listening to book 4 I know some walls are finally coming down between them which is good but like FINAAAAAALLY hahaha.

Narration was fabulous yet again! It was cool to hear more accents in this one, both narrators did a great job. I think Lucas has a tough job here with all the guys' accents and he does a good job swapping between them. I think Toro has an almost Cajun accent but he didnt talk much so I will figure it out when he gets more airtime in books 4 and 5.

I am glad all of these are out on audio because I would have flipped if I had to wait on that cliffy haha. Good job improving with each of these books, can't wait to see what happens moving forward!

Piece of Mage, book 3 in the Haret Chronicles by Laurel Chase picks up right where book 2 ended. Carlyle and Killian have just saved “Jack”, her dragon mate. What happens when they return to the safe house and how the other members of the team react sets this book off at a sprint. From there on, this book grips you and does not let you go. I continually checked how much longer I had to reach the ending......because I didn’t want it to end!!!

You can really see Carlyle maturing and growing into her role. I love her thought process and how she views her “guys”. The relationships between Carlyle and the team members are getting stronger and deeper. Part of that is a result of an unexpected addition to the team that causes some angst and conflict!:). Even though this book focused on the relationship between Carlyle and Dair, The other team members were not left out. In fact, that relationship was only one small part of the story. There is soooo much going on in Piece of Mage and it is all weaved together beautifully from world building, relationships, personal growth of all the team members, to sugar.;).

A lot of times subsequent books in a series seem to get bogged down with unnecessary conflict or slow down. Not this book. Piece of Mage is just as awesome as the past two books. I was completely engrossed and invested in the story and how Carlyle and the “guys” are trying to prepare her for her role to open the “path”. You will LOVE this book.

I can’t wait for the next book, Piece of Fae. My heart is in my throat.

Another great addition to an awesome series

So much action and excitement in this book. There were several new characters introduced that left me wondering just who should be trusted and who will double cross Carlyle and her team. I am still amazed with how the author has created this story, the characters, and this fictional world.

Carlyle finally has her whole team together the way it should be with Toro back to his normal self. She has gained a 3rd mate and is working her way on getting all 6 as her mates. The steam level is super hot and there are plenty of scenes to drool over. The MM between Sol and Killian is sexy as hell too.

I really love Carlyle as a female lead. She’s witty, snarky, and has just enough sass to hold her own against whatever is thrown her way whether it’s a jealous female mage or a murderous Qilin. All of her men are unique and I love them all for different reasons. Sol is the romantic and fun shifter. Jack is the sweet and somewhat shy romantic dragon. Dair is the confident and suave mage with plenty of kink. Killian is arrogant and stubborn fae. Jai (definitely my favorite) is the dark and brooding vampire that won’t give in to Carlyle just yet. Then Toro, he’s still a new wild card but so far he seems to be the cocksure player of the bunch.

Lots of new puzzles were thrown into this book with a few previous questions answered. But the plot has definitely thickened and twisted in on itself. Fantastic book to an already awesome series!

While I liked this one a lot more in terms of relationship, I am rating it a 3 because I wasn’t a fan of the overall plot arc.

See Carlyle is still learning, and there is a lot she still doesn’t know and she’s doing a lot of flying by the seat of her pants. This results in her making rash decisions but there was also a whole lot of nothing.

Jai wouldn’t let Car do anything. They all babysit her, and part of this book was spent doing absolutely nothing and her never addressing needing a purpose. I didn’t care for how Jai treated her when she got Jack back. And I felt a lot of his actions were reactionary to that.

However I absolutely loved the moments with her mates and the moments with her and her latest mate. It was great, but I still don’t like how they constantly have to ask for permission to do anything. It drives me nuts.

I have no idea what is going on and who the major players are. I’m about as in the dark as Carlyle is.

Also, I forgot to mention this in my previous review, but I wasn’t expecting M/M action. I don’t mind, but sometimes I’m not a fan of the other mates sharing each other. Because for it to be an RH I expect full attention on the h.

Still I am invested in where this is going. I suspect a lot of eye rolling to happen in the next.

Looks like the author has broken the world again (she really likes doing this). The boy Austin is part qilin, but in book one we where told that qilin can only have children with qilin. So, Austin is an anomaly, or the author apparently had to have an excuse for worry free sex. Something tells me that its the later. Later the author fixes this gaping hole by having Austin explain that male qilin can have children with other races. The Qilin as usual is not concerned about the feelings of team, only has it concerns the advancement of its needed power and its needed sex. It wants to proceed with "mating" the rest of the team to make its sexy army. The Qilin is mad that a new female mage is in the way of its getting the with the mage on its team. It does care a little about the mage, just wants to collect it more, and gets upset when it cannot. When the mage wants some confirmation of the qilin's feelings toward him, the qilin gets mad. Resigning itself that it doesn't need "shy cock" and that it has other "mates" to fill its needs. Obviously the mage is more human and requires a deeper connection than the lion or the dragon, who are act more on animal instinct. The qilin is confused about the mage's need for connection.

Yummy Yellow No. 3 💛

** Cliffhanger Warning! ** Holy sugar! I love this book. This is the third installment in a fabulously fun, fantasy, reverse harem romance. There's still a lot of fast-paced action as my favorite Qilin learns more about herself, the people of Haret, and her magically delicious men. The plot thickens and twists, so even though we're getting in the middle, there's no slump.

I like how so many new characters are introduced that may or may not be trustworthy, or possible allies somewhere down the road. I'm loving how the exposition is revealed in little bite sized bits and only as needed. There's this air of mystery as well as suspense thanks to that.

I also love the steamy and spicy goodness! It works so well with this new to me fantastic being, the Qilin. I have been doing a bit of research on this and it's clear that Laurel Chase is exercising her poetic license.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the side stories, especially the relationship between Sol and Killian. I'm glad to see Dair getting his head on straight and accepting his feelings for Carlyle. I'm excited to see what happens with Killian, Toro, and Jai.

Onward to the next flavor of this scrumptious rainbow!

Ok, it’s rare I like the continuation of a series when it’s in the middle. Usually way to much unnecessary drama and plott that hard to get in to without being dragged out. Not the case with this series Laurel Chase has done it again, I really like this book. We found out things I have been wondering about and new mysteries created. Can’t wait to found out what happens in the next book.

Leave with this, Laurel puts Carlyle through the ringer throughout the series but she don’t get down or give up. The guys don’t either undergo a massive personality change that can happen in some books. Really like it that they stay true to themself and not bend their personalities to match hers. Love it!

Oh my goodness! This story is amazing. I loved the twists and turns throughout it along with all the hot chemistry. Carlyle is this fantastic female lead that makes you wish you were her and be around her. Then we have a outstanding group of support characters that just add to the story and give the story just the right edge it needs. There is so many amazing characters that you just fall in love with most of them. This story has action, suspense, drama, mystery, and of course hot romance. It has you on the edge of your seat from the beginning to the end. It is very much worth reading and doesn’t disappoint. The only thing is that it does end in a cliffhanger and had me yelling nooooo I need more. So can’t wait for the next one.

Yaaaaas

This book was so good! I have devoured this series in under 24hrs and I’m so sad the rest of the books aren’t out yet lol truly.

Carlyle is such a great FMC. She’s got the right amount of spunk, alpha, feminine charm, relatability and the demanding Queen nature we all want/crave to show on the daily if we don’t already. Haret Moons I want to be a Qilin too! Lol

Don’t even get me started on the team. I am partial to Killian and Jai but really I’m down for them all. I’m always incredibly interested to learn more about Toro and see how everyone is going to get themselves out of this latest pickle with the council. Guess gov’t can’t remain incorruptible even in parallel worlds smh would that really be too much to ask?

Piece of a Mage, like the books before it, follow a sassy unicorn and her fellas around as they kick ass, eat lots of sweets, and do.... stuff. ;)

This book had me laughing and cursing and crying before I screeched at the final sentence.

There is huge growth in Carlyle in this book, she is coming into her own and realizing that she may be the key to helping the fellas come back together as a family.... oh and open a mystical pathway to another land.... you know... no big deal. No pressure. Carlyle's sassiness never fails to make me laugh. Her puns are on point. Read this book dammit.

Also Gina is a bitch. The end.

Piece of mage indeed 😄

A lot happened in this book! A lot of new players that cause trouble were introduced and we also have some happier stuff happen too. I liked the use of puns as part of the humor, particularly in this book, and it was done really well (i.e. not overdone and seen as annoying or come across as trying too hard to be funny). There's also an interesting balance between gaining more power but not becoming corrupted by it, she is definitely walking a fine line. You see a bit more into Car's mind and see that she is actually pretty smart and is starting to coming into her own. I'm really looking forward to the next one!

Lots of action

This time around we follow the team as Carlyle tries to sort out the tangled web of lies and secrets while endeavoring to make the world(s) a better place. By the end you won't know friend from foe but the team is all back together at least. For now.

This book was full of action. The story progressed at a rapid pace, but slow enough that it was easy to keep up with. Pacing can be so important and this book hit the nail on the head.

Some if the mysteries that most readers probably already figured out are starting to be confirmed in the story. By the end there are plenty more.

Things are getting interesting

3.7 for me

I’m going to say it now. The sex was haaawt. But if you don’t like dude on dude stuff then you probably should’ve stopped at the second installment lol

Carlyle finally has all over her guys together but now they must deal with the Council, people who were supposed to keep the Harets on Earth safe and in the know. It’s a checklist of things by this point and I’m mostly here for the sex and magic and watching Carlyle be all awesome. I liked the drama and how it made me hurt lol and I like the sweet stuff. The end was interesting.

Good writing, entertaining, great RH group. I love em.

Struggled to get through this book, still finding it hard to connect with the characters. The MMC's you just don't seem to get much of an emotional connection from, it seems to focus mainly on the physical and you only get glimpses of the emotion between the characters. The FMC is still turning into a demanding, slightly self focused character that I am not usually a fan of.
I still like the creativity of the world, and the plot twists! Really wish I was hooked enough to continue but I think I am going to pick up something else to read next as I just found myself skimming through this book too much.

God damn that's some good reading right there..... Just when I thought it couldn't get better too. I love this series and the more twists and turns i follow Carlyle and the guys in the more I fall in love with each of the characters..... I'll not spoil it for people but be prepared to have your heart broken, then mended and then broken and stamped all over.... These endings are gonna kill me!!!!
As usual the covers are beautiful and now they make so much more sense!!! I can't wait for my next read!!!

Book 3 in this series picks up shortly after the end of book 2. This book primarily centres on the relationship between Carlyle and Dair, and the ups and downs of their developing bond. Internal and external challenges abound, and we meet some new characters who effect great change. The ending was a surprise, and I cannot wait for book 4 in this series. I'm dying to know how they're going to cope with the new situation.

I loved the deepening relationships between Carlyle and the team, and the world building continues to develop. Book 3 was a joy to read.

Everyone breathe a sigh of relief for our favorite Qilin is back! Book 3 had me giggling, sighing in happiness and hating on the new bad guy. But I enjoyed every second of it. Plus quite possibly the sexiest scene Ms Chase has written yet x 2 maybe 3, I haven't finished deciding, but I had to go eat some chocolate after those bits, so you know it's good. For some reason I'm now craving a cupcake! I just love the style of writing and the amazing story that is unfolding in these books. Highly recommend!

This book was fantastic!
I absolutely love this series each book just get more and more awesome.
There’s so many surprises hidden within this story that I actually felt like I was sitting inside a huge whirlwind.
I’m impatiently waiting for the next book in this series because I guarantee it’s gonna be a shocker.
But anyway yes I definitely do recommend this book but if if you haven’t read the the first two books in this series then I highly suggest that you do that way you don’t get confused with what’s happening and who’s who.
