For hundreds of years, Nightmares have ruled the world.

Descended from the Seven Deadly Sins, these supernatural creatures have enslaved and tortured the human race.

I have lived my entire life fighting back against the monsters that have plagued this world. A deadly assassin and a member of the resistance, I only have one motto: kill or be killed.

When The Damning commences - a fight to the death against the world's most brutal serial killers, assassins, and torturers - a twist of fate finds me as one of the competitors. Despite my initial reluctance, I find myself eagerly participating.

But what I didn't count on, however, were the seven princes:

Lupe, a Shifter descended from Wrath.

Devlin, a Genie descended from Greed.

Jax, a Vampire descended from Gluttony.

Killian, an Incubus descended from Lust.

Ryland, a Shadow descended from Pride.

Sebastian, a Mage descended from Sloth.

And,

Dair, a Mermaid descended from Envy.

Our love could never be. I'm an assassin, and they are my targets.

But who ever said I needed to follow the rules? If only I can survive The Damning...

This is a medium-burn reverse harem romance. Expect a kick-ass, snarky MC, seven swoon-worthy heroes, and a lot of bloodshed. This is book 1 in a series.

After reading The Darkness We Crave and the following books, I thought I would give the author another try.
I liked Together We Fall but I loved the hell out of Greed.

Oh, I see your brain working, you RH fanatics.
Yes, the cover is purple.
Yes, the title is one single noun.
Yes, the heroine is a blonde.
Yes, the book is hilarious.
No, this is not a reheated version of Trickery.

Z is a badass. She is an assassin, a real one, and a damn good one. She might be human in a supernatural world but she is one of the best, if not THE best.
She is like the adult version we wish Sarah J Maas' heroine was.

Z kills murderers, rapists, and all the supernatural scumbags that escape justice. She is an assassin herself but doesn't stop feeling guilty about what she does. One day, someone will stop her but in the meantime, she hunts monsters.
Unfortunately, her last kill sends her directly into some sort of game to the death, a selection to chose the Kingdom's next executioner, the Damning. A hundred participants, two months to go, and only one survivor.

Greed serves more as an introduction book. We meet the characters, Z, her friends, and her future mates. This is no real spoiler as we have a lot more clues than any of the characters from the very beginning. There is a lot of humor, some action, a little bit of killing, and a lot of boners. Not a very original recipe when you think about it but with a delicious result.

I couldn't tell you exactly why I loved this book. Was it the sometimes ridiculous dialogues? The pace? Or was it the fact that Z is going to be the one wearing the pants in the relationship? Regardless, it just works. And I can't wait for the next book.

Greed kind of reminded me of author MC's from different series. I mean she was sarcastic and funny - which is basically a lot of MC's at this point. I did like Zara, which was surprising for myself because the rest of the characters were kind of meh.

The romance part of this book was just okay. Maybe I need a break from reverse harem because I haven't been liking them that much. Plus the ones I do like.. I have to wait like 5,000 years for the next book to come out. Or it just never comes out and I'm forever alone.

Overall, I liked the book but at the same time it wasn't spectacular or anything.

I reallyyyyy wanted to love this, but it was just ok. I loved the concept, but the execution--specifically in terms of the insta-love, writing, world building, stupidity, and character traits--interfered with that love.

This book is set in a world in which each of the seven supernatural species embodies one of the seven deadly sins, and the humans are at the bottom of the totem pole. The book focuses on a human assassin who gets magically sucked into joining a government-sponsored fight to the death among rapists and serial killers to determine who will be the supernatural leaders’ assassin and torturer. The MC doesn’t really think she’ll survive the competition, but she’s determined to kill as many of these horrible people as possible and avenge their victims. Above all else, she’s determined to kill all seven princes. Unfortunately for her, they aren’t what she expects them to be. This book had a definite RH Throne of Glass vibe, though ToG was definitely more complex and better developed.

I was a bit worried about this book from the beginning, since I knew the harem would have 7 members, because I think it's difficult to write seven separate well-developed romances for one character in one book. It doesn't help that I don't like when MCs gradually collect harem members of the course of a series; I like when all harem members join at the same time because I think it adds relationship equality. So anyway, it wasn't surprising that the author had to rely on insta-love to manage this many love interests--disappointing but not surprising.

The writing itself also had a lot of issues, and I had to force myself to move past the second sentence ("The air was uncharacteristically cold, and the trees seemed to be cooperating, their branches leafless.") because the book already didn't make sense, and it was only the second sentence. The verb tenses were a disaster in this book. I think this style of past-perfect verbs (e.g., ‘She had quickly became” instead of “She had quickly become”) may be a trait of a British English dialect, but none of the rest of the book (aside from the periods and commas that were after the closing quotation marks instead of before them) had traits of British English, so the whole thing was weird. The author also repeatedly used a lot of words incorrectly, such as “articulate” in the context of touching someone and “perpetrated” instead of “perturbed.” The author also gave us a bunch of info dumps about the various species, and I knew while I was reading them that I would never remember all of that information.

I also had some problems with the worldbuilding here. As in, what world is this, really? It’s a world with vampires, mermaids, and humans, but is it another world entirely? If so, why does this world have lightbulbs? If not, then how did Earth society turn into this?

The MC was also absurdly stupid at times. The whole premise of the book is that she gets roped into a government-sponsored fight to the death among the worst criminals, and she thinks that being in the Capital will somehow deter their crime. GOVERNMENT. SPONSORED. She also somehow kept managing to forget all the princes’ names, even though she was able to memorize the names and faces of all 99 other competitors in the competition. And then she got completely naked and started fooling around with a prince in a public area—you know, during the ongoing fight to the death—and, sure enough, someone shoots arrows at her. Well, duh!

Some of the character traits in this book bothered me as well. For example, the MC is supposed to be a bad-ass assassin, but she fell over when she tried to shove someone. Give me a break. And of course she fits the trope of having a gay best friend. The other character issues involve Prince Killian, the incubus. I liked that the princes didn’t really fit the stereotypes for their sins or species, but some aspects of his character may have gone too far. For example, he repeatedly talks to his penis as if it’s a dog (e.g., asking to pet it, asking it where it’s leading him, etc.). I initially couldn’t decide whether that amused me, but the final result is that it just made me cringe. He also has a stutter. I know people who stutter, and hearing it doesn’t bother me, but seeing it in dialogue often does. I already didn’t like the author’s portrayal of it (e.g., “Your hairrr looks likeee spaghetti”), but it got worse when she stopped doing that when she was supposed to: for example, “‘You look beautiful,’ he said softly, his stutter more pronounced than previously.” How is that invisible stutter more pronounced than the visible ones? I may not have liked that dialogue style, but it would have been better if the author had committed and been consistent.

Anyway, despite its many issues, this was entertaining, and I was disappointed that book 2 isn’t already out because this seemed like it would be a good series to binge.

PROGRESS UPDATES
1% The second sentence made no sense, so I've been putting off the third sentence for about 3 hours, lol.

17% "Granted, women, particularly human women, were always viewed as prey by Nightmares, but I hoped being at the Capital would quell such crude behavior. It was a chance I had to take." Dude, you're at a Capital-sponsored competition to find the worst murderer and rapist. Don't be an idiot.

72% "Damn. Z was rubbing off on me already. Soon, we would get him and her matching knife sets. My little psychopath." 😂🖤

This was shockingly good?! All the guys were actually different from one another and had personalities instead of just being growly possessive bastards, which was such a change from usual. Hella enjoyable!

Greed (The Damning Book 1) by Katie May

*read trigger warnings before picking up this read*
Wow. I cannot get over how completely hooked I was with the read. The beginning was a little rocky, but it was also a lot of info dropping, which was necessary. After that, I couldn’t put it down. The flow of this story was super smooth in my opinion. The emotions I felt were all over the place but I was totally here for it. A great start to a series I hope only gets better and better.
I got attached to all characters, which if you know me is actually really hard to do. I can usually only empathize with some characters, but for it to be all of them!? Even side character??! Insane. I’m not complaining though, it was a great experience. I’ll start with our FMC, Z or Zara. She was so much fun to read about. Her badass personality, and the skills to back it up? I fell in love….well so did everyone else 😂. Such a strong FMC. I also love to see a FMC who is protective and possessive of her men. It’s great to see a switch in the damsel in distress stereotype most FMC have. She could hold her own and keep the ones around her safe too! Our MMCs all made me giddy inside. To see they were nothing like the rumors spread about them was such a relief. I love to see vulnerable and cinnamon roll type MCs. Not to mention they were all head over heels for our FMC. I can’t wait to see their relationship grow. They all deserve some happiness in their pain-filled and dreary lives.
Don’t get me started on the plot, or world that this story takes place in. I can tell you, I’ve read tons of supernatural, paranormal reads and this one takes the cake on uniqueness. To base each supernatural being in this world off of each of the 7 deadly sins?! Brilliant! Plus each pairing was spot on! The powers, abilities, quirks of each were also extremely entertaining to learn about. Nothing was as it seems in this world. The knowledge that both humans and supernaturals could be evil was a nice change to see. Most reads really show humans as being innocent, but that it far from the truth. Evil can show up in everyone. I also love a story with a competition-based plot. Plus one where criminals face off against each other? Great to see!
Overall, this was a quick and easy read to get through. It took me a little bit to get all the guys sorted out in my mind because I usually only read RH with up to 4 men but this one has a whopping 7! After I was able to put a name and description to each man I was fine! I cannot wait to start the next one…which I will be doing after posting this review. Anxious to see how this story plays out and to see all the action, adventure that awaits!

Katie May caught me again! First with Gangs and Ghosts, and now with Greed..... the woman has talent, I tell you! On the surface, this series looks like it would resemble 'The Curse of the Gods' RH series, yet from the first 10 pages, you will quickly realize that there is NOTHING the same in this offering.

Z reaches out and smacks you in the face, pushing herself onto the page and crafting the story around herself with a bloody purpose that is slowly becoming clear. The world in which the Nightmares, otherwise known as Supernaturals, rule, is ripe with corruption and persecution. Z, as part of the Alphabet (yes... really) resistance, is an assassin who spends her days and her nights fighting agains the regime and struggling to bring humanity some semblance of light. When a target's death lands her a rare and precious invitation to The Damning, an event held every 5 years in order to discover the realms most deadly Nightmare, she knows this is the chance of a lifetime - or a sure fire way to die. Get in, win, and kill the Kingdoms heirs... the seven Princes. Just another day for an assassin.

Thoughts:
Love, Love, love this book! Seriously, there is humor, fourth wall breaking chuckles, sexual tension, fated yet incredibly reluctant mates, royal intrigue, a deadly competition and friendships most foul. It has everything, and then some.

Perspective:
First Person, Multiple POV.

Ending Type:
Episodic, with series cliffhanger.

Pros:
~ VERY well written.
~ FUNNY!
~ Z... she is a fantastic FMC and carries this tale from start to finish.
~ The Princes... I dare you not to fall in love with them, even just a little bit.
~ Well edited
~ Emotional in a way that doesn't tear, but bleeds.

Cons:
~ Heartbreaking (it's a con, ok.... I'm still sniffling, so it's a bloody Con!)
~ Book 2 publication date not set yet. (I'm an impatient reader... sue me.)

I can only say this book to me was a hot mess. characters and world just felt really two dimensional. I couldn't place when or where it was set. Was it in a future world where magic and supernaturals came out or is this full on fantasy land? but then why are they talking the way they are.

and she didn't seem like much of an assassin it seemed to be more focused on building this mate bond thing and people just kinda dying in front of her. There was so much potential for this one for me but it just didn't live up to what I was hoping it would be. There were so many of them it felt just like one after the other introducing them. And I was disappointed when the point of view changed to one of the guys I think if the story was longer and had more details I wouldn't mind the change of point of views at all but I was really starting to vibe with the story and main character and then suddenly pov switch I was like nooo.

I also didn't get the point of some things like

just really disappointed it didn't turn out how I was hoping.

Read this thinking stupidly that a few sequels in the series were already out. So you can imagine my utter despair when I finished on a chiffhanger and there’s no sequels yet!

Everything about this had ”me” stamped all over it.

✅ Strong yet witty FMC, trained as an assassin
✅ Fated mates
✅ seven yummy and various supernatural love interests
✅ Multiple POVs
✅ Little fluffy but not overly so.
✅ Sweet and sexy
✅ Heavily romance based but still has a good plot

I can’t believe I haven’t read this sooner. It’s not what I expected, I thought seven deadly sins and went directly to demons. But it was actually quite clever in making the seven princes different supernaturals whose origins are loosely based on the seven deadly sins

Shifters - Wrath, Lupe is our Prince
Mage - Sloth, Sebastian
Vampire - Gluttony, Jax
Mermaid - Envy, Dair
Shadow - Pride, Ryland
Genie - Greed, Devlin
Incubus - Lust, Killian

Yes seven is more than I usually like in a harem but some of the players were mostly absent from this and with all being different paranormals it was easy to keep track. I really wanted more from the ones we didn’t see so much of like Jax the broken vampire. Whom I may have already dubbed my favourite on account of him being mentally insane and all

Z is the human MC who is part of a rebellion against the “nightmares” aka supernaturals who rule this word. She’s brought to the palace when she is entered into a trial with 99 other assassins to become to royal assassin. That was a pretty weak reason to have her enter the palace and the “games” didn’t play as big a part as it should have. A set of games for the title of royal assassin? Never would happen.

She also could have been better as an assassin and if you ask me these nightmares are much to easy to kill. They all have super powers but go down like a lead balloon.

I could probably pick more holes but you know what, I devoured this is one sitting I was so into it. It wasn’t perfect and ended in a cliffhanger but it was certainly was my cup of tea. If anyone reading this knows of others with similar themes that I'm missing out on you just pass on those recs!

I'm deeply ashamed, because up until now I only read May's Supernaturalette series, even though I have loads of her books on my Kindle already. I knew that was gonna change this summer and when I read on Facebook that some people seriously e-mailed May to tell her that the guys in this book were so unattractive because of their disabilities I also knew exactly which book to start with. I mean, if you complain that there aren't enough characters with disabilities in books, you gotta check out the ones there are.

I'm in love. I'm completely, utterly, fully in love. This story was everything! The guys in this story were everything. I've been reading the book with a smile on my face, with some ache in my heart at times and with the adrenaline rushing through my veins. I had high hopes when starting this book, but May delivered. The book was emotional, the book was action-packed, the book was exciting, layered and interesting.

All the important characters get one or more point of view chapters in this book. I like how that helps us to understand what's going on in their heads, what they're struggling with, how they look at themselves and how they believe the world to see them. All the guys, but for sure Z too, have a chip on their shoulder. This society is quite clearly a harsh one where the weak, the pretty and the smart have targets on their backs and if they survive they have to deal with the consequences.

And all these struggles, all these painful pasts and all the strong emotions jumping from the page really got to me. I started to care about these characters so incredibly quickly. I started rooting for their happy ending so fast. The amazing characters combined with the exciting plot with a touch of politics, a touch of mystery and loads of danger, makes this book an amazing ride. And it's only the beginning. I can't wait to read more!

The Selection meets Curse of the Gods in this new series, and what I was sure would be an instant hit with me, ended up being a real disappointment. Unlike some of the more recent and disappointing RH books I have read that have fallen into the damnable vortex that is recycled plotlines and cringe-inducing tropes, Greed let me down in a completely different way; I wasn't a fan of the writing. Rather than a steady story, things really became convoluted and jumpy. The story arc seemed to fracture and splinter about half-way through the book, and the resulting conclusion came across as very rushed and extremely unfulfilling.

For instance, one of the MAJOR hooks of this book--and one of the main reasons I was excited about it--is that the MC is an assassin. I mean, this is straight from the blurb:

When The Damning commences - a fight to the death against the world's most brutal serial killers, assassins, and torturers - a twist of fate finds me as one of the competitors. Despite my initial reluctance, I find myself eagerly participating.

I was expecting some really awesome assassin-y stuff to go down. And it did...for like the first chapter or so. As the story went on, it became less about her being an assassin or even "The Damning" and more about other stuff. I'm not going to give away any spoilers, but suffice it to say that by the end of this book I was pissed off and left confused AF.

This is definitely not a series that I am interested in continuing.

It's been a while since I read a reverse harem book and I was excited to dive into Greed. I enjoyed this book so freaking much. It reminded me of how much I love this genre. It was a really quick read for me and I already started the sequel, Envy. If I'd wanted to find flaws, maybe I could have but honestly I just want to focus on the positive and enjoy the ride!

Interesting beginning to a reverse harem supernatural romance. Zara, our heroine, is kickass, independent and definitely the alpha of the book. When she accidentally gets herself enrolled in an assassins competition, she discovers she has not one, not two, not three! but seven mates. Oh and they're all princes. Each coming from different supernatural communities.

I think the rest of the series, the author will try to answer the main question in the book:
"what do you even do with that many dicks?"

I love when I find something kind of common in the fantasy/paranormal world and an author has put a new spin on to it. Katie May takes the seven deadly sins and combines them with some of our most-loved paranormal creatures as well as some that don't always get the love they deserve. Not to betray my usually near and dearest- vampires and shifters- I need to pay some attention to May's genie, shadow, and mermaid: hardcore excited to dig more into them with the next book.

Her seven princes aka the paranormal embodiment of the seven deadly sins are delightfully unexpected and creative. I love that she took the time to pair each sin with a specific creature in ways that MAKE TOTAL SENSE. It feels well-planned, and I totally dig the rationale she's created for each of them. That little bit of care and effort makes her characters feel more well-rounded and definitely peaks my interest.

So far my favorites are....ALL of them, honestly. The little contradictions are just d*mn adorable. An incubus who's bashful about s*x? A shifter who's a bear of a man that has the heart and soul of a poet? Love it. The men all have strengths, powers that make them forces to be reckoned with. Yet, Zara, our leading lady, is still allowed to be strong. She's not lesser because she's human.

Instead, Zara is a bad*ss who takes care of her own bodies and fights off the assassins who come at her. She's in a bit over her head, and she's got a lot of sh*t to deal with in the coming second book, but I think she definitely has a strong sense of sense that'll help her power through it.

Overall, Greed was an awesome series opener that I really enjoyed. There were a little hiccups here and there; for example, I couldn't quite wrap my head around Zara, a professional assassin, not immediately recognizing the princes upon meeting them. Honestly, though, those warranted an eyebrow raise, and I quickly moved on. The book is entertaining, the characters are unique and fun, and I'm TOTALLY excited for more.

I have mixed emotions on this book. This is the second book I read from the author. It seems like most of the RH men barely have balls. I know it’s a kickass female, but it seems like all the men even from the other book, are submissive. Ion not looking for a damsel in distress but equal relationship is much appealing to me.

I wonder if Katie May and Jane Washington ended up writing a book together. It will be hilarious and definitely entertaining. Except RH men from JW are subtly dominant while KM’s RH men are submissive.

This was okay, but there was something missing for me.

I sort of liked Z, but she irritated me in equal measure. She's a human, but a highly skilled/trained assassin, but we didn't really see that much of a display of bad ass skills, beyond being able to take down Nightmares, or supernaturals with an ease that was almost comical, as they supposedly have the power of their race of creature etc, yet she easily bested them all. Yet when it came to the big show down at the end she was suddenly helpless and powerless? Hetvcuaracrtisation just wasn't even enough for me to really get behind her.

Also, I found the men somewhat lacking. I sort of liked the twist on the whole uber alpha supernatural trope, in that the vast majority, if not all of the guys are just gentle guys who passively sit by while their families commit atrocities against the human race, and again, despite their (supposedly vast) supernatural powers, don't really seem to kbow how to fight or do a lot.

I don't know if I just need a break from RH, but I just wasn't feeling this.

3-3.5 stars. I mean I thought it was and enjoyable read. The FMC was quirky, snarky and also a bad A, but also kind of oblivious. There is definitely something shady going on and we are on the outside looking in. I am liking all the love interests so far, there is definitely chemistry. The fact that it took all these princes so long to figure out their mate was the same person was both cringe worthy and funny at the same time. Honestly what would have made this better for me is if we had a little more world building, backstory and freaking explanations as to why it seems all these events are even happening to begin with.

As the reader we are prepaired to go into the Damning ready to fight with the FMC, but honestly it seems we are having more problems from this random chic that keeps sending out assassins at us.. and that ending. Cliffhanger/Heartbreak alert. I'm definitely going to have to follow along with this series so we can get some dang answers. What makes our FMC so special?

The story itself is good. The pacing, the arc, the world and characters were all fairly well done; it was engaging. This series has a lot of potential.

I really did like Z, for the most part. She's a little broken, but she's still strong. I think she could grow into a phenomenal female lead.

However, the lack of line edits that resulted in the many story inconsistencies was more than a little distracting, along with poor word choices.

It's worth giving a try though, especially if you're not bothered by the conflicting information provided throughout.

I'd definitely bump it up a star if the issues were fixed.

Wow. This book was so intense. The heros are not your typical ones in any sense. They are dark and tortured and have tortured pasts and presents and even though they have/had it rough they are mostly kind even though they are supposed to be terrible Nightmares. And I love them all and want them to be happy, but I don’t see that happening for quite some time. Then our heroine, Z, she has such a huge battle ahead of her. Lots of secrets going on too. I will definitely be waiting for the next book.

The story was good...

This thing is here's my complaint, I have another series started by the author that I'm waiting for a sequel on and I can't help but wonder if I let myself get invested in this series, how long will it be before I find out what happens next? Obviously she's not the only writer who does this but as a reader I find it really upsetting, waiting for sequels and instead getting the first book in a new series. Ms. May is a talented writer, the lead character was interesting and the world she's built is something I want to know more about, that said I kind of feel like I want to reserve judgement until I get another book.

The plot was interesting if somewhat generic and not really the point of the book. The characters was memorable but I felt like they were badly executed and the main character was kind of flat.

*Spoilers*

So the story starts out with out mc killing a mage because he raped CHILDREN, I was kind of put off about this detail. I get it he’s a super bad guy but you can make someone boarder line evil with out making them a child rapist. It is also brought up with multiple of the other ‘bad guys’ in the book. When she recites their names, species, and crimes, most of them have either raped or murdered kids. This is sloppy writing because their is a hundred other crimes to pick from and you choose to focus on that one, WHY?

After she murdered him and stole his invitation to ‘The damming’ as it’s revered to in the book, his body just disappears with the help of some magical pill or something. The magic of the fancy paper then changes to have her name on instead of the plot device who’s name I can’t even remember BECAUSE IT NEVER MATTERED ANYWAY. What annoyed me most about this part was that the only people who received the invitations, according to the book, was criminals who had done atrocious things AND the letter was hand delivered by the council (who ever they may be since their never mentioned again). Now whether or not the author explains it a council is usually part of the government, charged to protect people, I can’t imagine ANY government just letting a know child rapist run rampant whether they hate humans or not. That entire encounter and scene made me uncomfortable from being to end.

The other thing that made me want to rip my hair out at different points in the book was her harem. They’re idiots, plain and simple, they claim to know each other so well and their all ‘brothers’ even thought they aren’t blood related but I call bull. For the first 80% of the book they can’t even figure out that they all have the same mate? Like what? Sure she goes by two names Z and Zara and she has a magical cloak but more than one of them either know or figure out that Zara is Z, yet they can’t figure out they share the same mate.

She had all the classics, a vampire, a succubus, a bear shifter, a genie, a mage and a mermaid. They were all badly executed though. The vampire is crazy and we barely get any interaction between him and our mc. I think they’re in the same room together twice and he’s mentioned all of 5 times in the book. The next is a virgin succubus (he’s saving himself for his mate) which I could be fine with except he’s awkward as hell, no where in the history of ever has a guy told a girl her hair looks like spaghetti and she thought it’s endearing. Like no, fine make him awkward but seriously he can still have manners. The big bear shifter is a poet with no anger issues and he’s such a pacifist and he reads, don’t judge a book by it’s cover guys, he’s cool. I’m not even going to start with the others I will however say that they are equally dumb and annoying. It’s like she took all the supernatural races and just ignored their core personalities, shifters then to have anger issues because of their ANIMAL sides. Succubi tend to be at least semi decent at conversation because they need to attract humans to feed using sex, ITS THE WAY THEY SURVIVE FOR HEAVENS SAKE. Genies can’t go around killing the people who use their wishes because then no one would wish of thing and they will die without being able to feed off the wishes (that’s what the author implies in her depiction of genies). She wanted her characters to be so special and different they kind of lost the things that made them special in the first place. They were all zebras without their stripes, basically just albino donkeys.

First of all, I don’t know if we’re reading the same book cause I’m honeslty so confused why anyone would rate these at least two stars or higher - and that’s me being kind. Why, just why.... I don’t get it. I kinda had high expectations for this book cause like people kept saying it had the same energy as Trickery by Jaymin Eve and Jane Washington ( mostly because of the cover, I know) and my god do I love that book. It also almost has the same rating in goodreads so yeah, expectations.

And my god did those always dissapoint me.

And I did just not crash hard, like car crash hard. But I crashed landed like an alien falling from space to a cornfield with no way to get back home and am now trying to work with creatures that I do not understand just so I can get out of this hellspace.

That’s what it felt like the whole time.

The author made me feel like I was reading something she just created from random alphabets to random words to random sentences to random paragraphs and then to make this godawful random plot. Like I know that’s how you make stories Karen, but you can’t just put random stuff together and think it’ll work. (Well, not all the time anyway)

First of all, this woman we call our main character is supposed to be a great assassin. Hell, she’s been doing this for years and she can’t even dodge a fvcking BOOK! Like great, yeah, you just died, like two times now. Applause to you great assassin, I hope your fucking ABC’s Co. get burnt. She’s so incompetent and not only her but everyone and I mean literally EVERYONE LIVES WITH ONE BRAIN CELL. No, not even one each. They share this one brain cell to whoever is speaking. If your out of thE picture, you get no working brain. I don’t even wanna dive in how dumb everyone is, like ‘OH MY GOD OF COURSE SHE SHOULD BE MORE COUC- COACIOU-CAUTIOUS-GOD THEY EVEN MADE ME DUMB-SHE’S IN A FREAKING BATTLE ROYALLE!! Stop reassuring her like she’s in the safest place in the world. You know who I’m talking about.

And the plot is just a mess. Look girlie, you and your little Kiddie Klass can go F yourself okay. You literally don’t need to go to that freaking contest or whatever! They will LITERALLY KILL EACH OTHER WITH OR WITHOUT YOU. The only reason you’re even there is to make a petty excuse for a girlboss moment which, I can’t believe i’m even saying this, YOU’RE NOT!

I’m so tired of this ‘I’m not like other girls cliche, B/TCH PLEASE. Stop thinking you’re so different because what? ‘Oh I can’t believe girls can actually wear dresses, ughh pantss forever’’who cares about clothes, i just love being natural and nude cause you know im soo cool’ oh my god whats mekup’ . Maybe I can ignore these ‘special vibes’ she’s going before but slut-shaming other girls and putting yourself higher because what? you’re all natural like the farts you keep talking about that makes you so quirky, oh shut up, you’re not even going through that teenage phase anymore.

I’m not even gonna talk about the one-dimentional men this book has which basically has two personalites, bitter and horny. So great. the recipe for the perfect man.

Good thing about this though-cause I don’t wanna say nothing was at least interesting in this book that would garner it a piece of star- was it’s take on the seven carnal sins. I actually like how the author takes them in the form of supernatural creatures and explains why she picked them -which made a lot of sense. But that’s all.

There’s really nothing in here that I can say is witty or funny like Trickery is. This is that meme where like:
Me: Mom, I want that book Trickery.
Mom: We have a book like that at home.
Trickery book at home:

You get what I mean?

A must read

This book was so good, I couldn't put it down. If you like paranormal, assassins, reverse harem and stories that suck you in and make you demand for the next book to be put, then this is for you. I loved everything about it and just want more, more, more.

Lol @ the fact that it took me so long to read this. But such is my life now.

ANYWAYYY

what a treat.

Going in, I got a lot of Curse of the Gods vibes from the cover but decided against judging the book for slightly copying it in that way.

Fucking goodness I can’t believe an assassins group all go by alphabet letters.
Could you imagine?
I mean..
HH?
RRR?
I would hate to be U, that would get confusing.
Also I. Equally confusing. Speaking of I, I have questions.

Do they go by chronological order?
Is A the OG?
Does that mean Z is the last of the original alphabeters?
If they have an HH and an RRR I mean how many more have multiple letters? Is there an AAA? AAAAA?

So many questions, so little time.

Z: I’m having a hard time deciding if I like her. I think I do. She’s kinda badass but at the same time her hatred is a little off putting.
The men:
Dair in a wheelchair.
Killian with a stutter.
Jax with... well voices in his head.

Such a variety of issues! They aren’t all the same and I love it.

Ready for book 2.
Ready for some more action.

It had been long enough between rereads that I forgot initially what this was about. As I continued reading I began to remember a lot of the story and am glad that I still enjoyed it. While it's not perfect, it's still very entertaining. I like that it has a lot of story and isn't bogged down in the spice. I liked the character development although Zara is a weird character. She talks about farts a lot and she talks to herself A LOT which is fine but feels weird in a top assassin.

Z is just the type of bad ass heroine we all love...and then some. Points to the author for adding just the right amount of humor—and giving her some good sidekicks—to help move things (including one lovely joke about a hotdog) along. At the beginning we find Z, an assassin, accepting her next assignment. She quickly finds herself enlisted in The Damning, a hunger games/ to-the-death type of competition of the world’s worst (best?) assassins. Z’s goal? Kill all the baddies, including the 7 Princes. The 7 Princes are born out of the 7 deadly sins (lust, greed and, oh shit I forgot the rest...who cares? Bad stuff!). They are prophesied to either end the world or save it, or something.

Except the Princes are all kinds of unconventional. This is where the author could have delved into serious trope territory, but she made a concerted effort to turn some of the usual “hot harem dude” archetypes on their head...a bit. Ok, they are still hot. BUT! One has a stutter, a disability, is shy, mentally unhinged...you know, the USUAL.

But in all seriousness, I loved this first book and was so happy to see the next one has just come out. Z is very likable, with a good mix of confidence, snark, and, thank the polyamorous gods, she is not self-sacrificing. The romance was a medium-burn, and felt *right* for the overall pacing of the book. If I had to bitch just a little, I’d want a little more dialogue between the characters to help build up the relationships more to a believable level. The fated/mated romance trope is STRONG with this. Not insta-love, but close. If that turns you off, you’ll hate this book. I hope we aren’t gearing up for 7 books, because—like another VERY similar-looking book—the quality went down as the books wore on.
