His voice threaded through her, as if it might be made of rawhide, designed not to break, to weather time and elements, as sturdy as the land he probably worked. Because yes, he wore cowboy like a second skin, the no-nonsense aura of hard work and get ’er done.

About KNOX:

He's not looking for trouble...

Montana rancher Knox Marshall's danger years are behind him. A former bull-rider, he now runs the Marshall family ranch, raising champion bucking bulls for the National Professional Bullrider's Expo (NBR-X). Wealth and success are his, but life is stable, expected, and…ordinary.  But he wants more from life...

But trouble is looking for her...

Kelsey Jones just wants a safe life, a family, a home. Onstage, the beautiful rising star of the Yankee Belles becomes the person she longs to be - vivacious and confident - burying the brokenness she carries from a violent assault. Becoming NBR-X’s next country act is key to outrunning her past and achieving the success and security she craves.

When trouble finds them both...

Knox and Kelsey's paths collide when an explosion at an NBR-X event traps them in the rubble and leaves them reeling. Kelsey’s crippling nightmares return, but for Knox, an obsession to find the bomber is ignited.

What will it cost him to protect her?

When Kelsey’s past threatens Knox’s family, he'll have to choose between saving the Marshall legacy or becoming the protector he's always longed to be.

I can't help be amazed at the gifts God has delighted me with - a wonderful husband, four amazing children, and the opportunity to write for Him.

I've been writing as long as I can remember - I won my first book writing contest in first grade! Over the years, writing has become, for me, a way to praise God and see Him at work in my life.

Although I have a degree in Mass Communications from the University of MN, my real writing experience started when I penned the The Warren Report - a bi-monthly newsletter that detailed our ministry highlights.

Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.

Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.

Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.

I 'm delighted you've stopped in to visit. My hope is that you'll be blessed and encouraged by soul-stirring stories of regular people interacting with a God who loves them.

I'd love to hear from you! I love getting mail, especially from readers and I welcome your questions and comments. Write to me at [email protected]. And, if you're interested, sign up for my newsletter, a quarterly sneak peek into upcoming releases and projects. Thank you for your interest and support.

God Bless and Happy Reading!

Be still my heart! I was thrilled to find out that the author is writing a series about the Marshall family- Rueben, the oldest brother, was my favorite smokejumper in the Montana Fire series, and the brief glimpse we see of his family when they are reunited at the end of Burnin' for You provided the perfect lead-in to more stories. I loved reading Knox's perspective and understanding his feelings about being responsible for the ranch while his siblings went on to lead exciting lives. He feels nice, safe, and old, but when Kelsey comes into his life with all her trauma and vulnerability, he is exactly what she needs, and he feels good about that. It was interesting to see the dichotomy in Kelsey's persona- the vibrant country singer who can hold a crowd in the palm of her hand, and the frightened victim who is just trying to hold it together for one more day. She drew out the hero in Knox, and he helped her feel protected and cherished for who she really is. They had great chemistry and the author did a fantastic job of showing them falling in love amid the turmoil in their lives. I loved the peace of the ranch and the way it calmed Kelsey, allowing her to realize the Lord's hand at work in her life. The pace is steady and quickens with each element of danger the characters face. Part of the story is shown from the perspective of Tate and Glo, and I'm excited for their story and the continuation of the suspenseful plot! All five books in the series are being released this year and I appreciate that we won't have long to wait between each book!

While I enjoyed Knox more than some of Warren’s previous books, I can’t say it was my new favorite. Knox and Kelsey are both very intriguing characters with their own demons they’re fighting. Plot-wise, it felt very slow and honestly, Tate stared more in Knox’s own book than Knox did. The romance happened very fast, and from that standpoint wasn’t super believable to me. The *cough cough* rather passionate kissing also irritated me. (Get a room, guys, sheesh!) Not a lot of action happened, and the suspense was pretty minimal for a romantic suspense book. It was more romance than suspense for sure. I did enjoy the family aspect of the book, and my favorite scenes were when the entire family was back home.

All in all, I can’t say I am a huge fan, but nonetheless, I am interested to read Tate’s book. (That cliffhanger preview was killer!)

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book for promotional purposes from JustRead Tours. A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

Knox is the first book in The Montana Marshalls series and it was so good! I didn't love everything about it, but the story overall was great. I thought the suspense was intense and the ending was wonderful. I can't wait to read the next book soon!

'He gave a low chuckle and she could feast on it every day of her life.'

Susan May Warren gave us the Christiansens several years ago and now she gives us the Marshalls. I love her family series! Oh, I love everything she writes, actually. Knox Marshall wears cowboy like a second skin. Once a professional bull rider, now running the family's ranch, raising championship bulls, Knox is steady, strong and safe. Knox is a true hero, too. He cares about those he loves and will always be there for them. Always. When he meets Kelsey Jones at a rodeo event, she is on stage singing with her group, the Yankee Belles. But Kelsey is hiding some serious pain and anxiety. Surviving a vicious attack as a young teen, Kelsey is pretty much miserable with her life. But Knox sees this and wants to help. After an explosion in the arena, he takes her back to the family ranch to keep her safe, but trouble follows them. Knox has already lost his heart to Kelsey, and hopes she will accept it. Kelsey is so full of hurt and is hopeful, but life is full of heartbreaks and she just doesn't feel her life will ever be peaceful.

Come along as Warren takes her readers on a ride that is sure to get your blood pumping. These Marshalls have already found a place in my heart. We not only get to know Knox here, but Tate plays a major role, too, and I can't wait to read his story. And there are five books in this series!! Wow. I wish I had them all right now. Susan May Warren is a forever favorite of mine and her books always have pride of place on my shelf. She not only tells an exceptional story, but she also includes great spiritual truths. Top notch! Highly recommended.

*My thanks to the publisher and author for a preview copy of this book. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

In many ways this was a pretty good book. I enjoyed the two brothers who feel quite attached to two main singers of the country girls group, "Yankee Belles".

Thirty-year-old ranch owner and bull breeder, Knox, virtually saved Kelsey twice in one day. He felt connected to her because of it (and other appealing physical attributes).

Kelsey had PTSD from a brutal attack when she was fourteen, and the condition needed to be handled carefully. Knox was gentle and safe and seemed perfect for her.

After the group's country performance, Tate (Knox's brother) helped pull Kelsey and several others out of the stadium bomb wreckage. His shirt was used to stop Kelsey's bleeding, so when he tried to see her in the hospital to report back to Knox about Kelsey's condition, Glo, her singing partner/bulldog at the door, doesn’t believe he’s anything other than a reporter showing off his pecks and biceps to impress her. Oh, maybe some of it worked.

Eventually he was able to find out and report back to Knox how Kelsey was doing. Realizing they needed security, Glo offered him a bodyguard position.

The story to follow was Knox and Tate investigating a stalker intent on hurting someone associated with the band, and the feelings of attraction between Glo and Tate, and Kelsey and Knox.

The love story was a sweet one, but in my opinion was a bit too physical. Lots of passionate kissing on a couch behind closed doors and cuddling until one fell asleep made me uncomfortable. Many would consider it tame. I found it a tad irresponsible/unwise.

But it kept my attention and the story was pretty good. The ending, however was abrupt, leading the reader to consider the next book in order to get the whole story of the very likable (just shy of perfect) Marshall family.

This series has an explosive start! Pages were flying as I read this.

While I enjoyed and respected Knox and Kelsey, the start of Tate’s story really pulled me in. Their visit to New York - wow! Five star scene.

I’m walking around with a book coma. Do you know what I mean?
It’s where you’ve just read a book and you can’t seem to get it out of your head.
Where the characters are so real you wonder what they are doing now and what will happen in the future.
In this new series by Susan May Warren, that is exactly what is happening to me right now! WOW! I wish I could meet this very larger than life family from Montana. I think I’d love to have them as friends. I’d also enjoy riding around the homestead and experiencing all the beauty God put there.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I'm at a loss to have words eloquent enough to convey the depth of emotions and feelings I get each time I pick up one of Susan May Warrens' books.
She does this all in such a way where you as a reader, are drawn in and can't let go until the end. She uses action and suspense, drama and romance to woo the reader in. Her words touch the very center of your soul and hold you there.
I was held there and couldn’t put the book down until I finished it, BUT then I wanted MORE!
I truly can’t wait for the next book in the series, where I’m sure there will be tons of action, suspense, and romance, as we continue to get to know the Marshall family members.
Whatever Ms. Warren writes I'll read because I know I'll be captivated and blessed in a way that is life-changing.
I was given this book by the publisher for an honest review, all opinions are my own.

I had a hard time believing that Knox was 30yrs old and Kelsey was 26yrs old. It read more like a YA novel than an adult. I struggled with the storyline and the back-and-forth between being with or not being with regarding the love interests. This book was supposed to be mainly about Knox, but Tate seemed to take center stage throughout most of it.

I've experienced another one of SMW's series where life-threatening situations happened one after another and it became exhausting and unbelievable. I have to remind myself to think of this like a Mission Impossible movie or something along those lines because of all the near-death experiences. And I don't like nicknames like, "bro" or "Glo".

There were some gold nuggets throughout and the Christian faith added some positive notes when needed. I own the series on my Kindle so I'll continue reading - maybe it gets better.

So Good!!

I have been anxiously awaiting this book! I'm so excited to have a new book and a new series by Susan May Warren. She really knows how to weave a story full of all the good things I crave in a story. Engaging characters with depth and personality, excellent forward momentum, chemistry and romance! I wish I had the next book to read right now because ooh la! The ending was also the beginning and I am already invested in characters. Bring on Tate!!

Romantic Suspense Genre

Knox is the first book in the Montana Marshall’s Series by Susan May Warren. I’m pretty sure this was my first book by this author. It was a quick and easy read. I really enjoyed the family dynamic and the western vibe. The plot was good and pacing moved effortlessly. The main characters were ok, but I found myself drawn more to some of the side characters a little more. I know this is just the beginning, and do look forward to diving into some of the other family members drama later on down the road. Would recommend if looking for a quick, clean romantic suspense book.

The action is heavily packed into this first edition of the new series. From the first word, prepare to love the Marshall family while holding your breath in the face of danger. Not only will you receive a heaping cupful of adventure and suspense but a daily allowance of grit, grace, self-discovery and renewed faith as well. Susan May Warren delivers beautiful scenes of spiritual enlightenment among the characters and also for readers. During the struggles, Knox, Kelsey, Tate and Glo face their biggest internal and external challenges while squinting at the light at the end of the tunnel.

For those who have previously read the Montana Rescue and/or Summer of the Burning Sky, there are brief appearances from favorites woven into the story. Be prepared to immediately yearn for book two, Tate, for the continuing saga of family, friends and perilous situations.

I received a complimentary copy of the book without obligation. This review is my opinion.

This series is one that I have been waiting to read when I had the whole series since I tend to want to go from one of Susie May's books to the next. She has the ability to create such hunky noble male characters and strong female characters that just need each other. Knox is the second of a family of five sons, one natural daughter and a foster daughter. Knox is the son who stayed home to work the family ranch in Montana although at one time he wanted to be a bull-rider. He is an honorable, hard working, loyal, dreamy cowboy.
Kelsey Jones is a lead singer in a girl band, the Yankee Belles. She has a tragic past that she can't seem to shake. She and Knox meet at a bull-riding competition in San Antonio. His family's prize bucking bull, Hot Pete, is in the competition. Knox's brother, Tate, is at the competition working as security. When an explosion hits the arena, Knox saves Kelsey in a part of the collapsed building. Afterwards, Tate is hired as a bodyguard for the Yankee Belles as they hit the road. Kelsey's past appears to have caught up on her and someone may be after her. Knox heads home afterwards.
But there is a wild ride as the adventure continues with multiple events, some dangerous that keeps you on the edge of your seat. There is also a celebration of the family matriarch's sixtieth birthday for which most of the siblings return. Filled with thought provoking dialogue, love, trust, and facing fears all woven with faith in true SMW style. Another winning series. I am looking forward to reading about Tate's story now.

Knox is the first book of the Montana Marshalls series by Susan May Warren. In this book you will have so many emotions that you are holding your breath throughout the book! Knox is the kind of man you want to have around when you are in a bad situation. He is old, nice and safe...at least that is what he thinks and that is what Kelsey needs at the moment. I just absolutely loved this book! I wish a man like Knox actually existed in my life! LOL. I loved the characters and how they interacted with each other. Kelsey from a hard, troubled past and Knox a man who is the kind of man Kelsey needs in her life. You will fall in love with Knox's and Kelsey's story starting from the first chapter and how God can restore anything! I highly recommend this book! It is suspenseful with romance thrown in! You will NOT want to put it down!

Hot diggity! There’s a reason Susan May Warren is one of my favourite romantic suspense authors. Lots of reasons, in fact. And the first book in this new series reminded me of them all over again. For starters, I was totally sucked into the story from page one. Getting sucked in by the first few pages is one thing, but not many authors can maintain that hold through each and every page that follows like Susan May Warren can, making it really hard to get anything else done once you’ve started reading.

Then there are her characters. They’re each so real and unique. Cowboys are pretty popular romantic leads, but I guarantee you won’t find another one like Knox. Which is kind of a shame, come to think of it, because he’s now up there on my list of favourites. Yeah, he’s got swoony factor, but it’s the quiet, hardworking, down-to-earth, a-little-bit-insecure but I’m-your-safe-place kind of swoony factor. Melt. My. Heart. And Kesley was the perfect heroine to draw Knox out and push him past the things that have been holding him back.

The suspense kept me guessing right to the end too—not in a “whodunnit” sense, but in a “what’s going on” sense. And as always, Susan May Warren manages to challenge her characters spiritually as well—as if they don’t already have plenty on their plate! In other words, you get the full package: Fantastic characters, swoony romance (with substance), riveting suspense, and spiritual growth. And the ending has left me chafing at the bit for Tate’s story. Bring it on!

I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Ladies, get your fans ready. And maybe a drink of water. Knox is one swoon worthy character. I mean, why aren't we all fleeing to Montana right now!? Wow. Susan May Warren writes some of my favorite hunky heros, but Knox just might be the one to beat. He's loyal, protective, hard working, safe, and so much more. And while I would love to tell you just to read the book for Knox, I can't. Susan May Warren can write a book. I mean, it's not all about the hunky heroes (although they are a plus!). She weaves a story, shows vulnerability, character growth, romance, and even suspense. There's a little bit of something for everyone in this story.

I do have to touch on Kelsey's character for a moment. She may have tried to act strong, but on the inside here is a girl who just needed to be loved the right way, and protected. Don't we all want that at some point in our lives!? She was scared, and she proved this theory over and over again in this story. I'm not going to lie, at times I just wanted to shake her and tell her to wake up and stop running. But I get it, I probably would have done the same in her situation. And isn't that what a good author does? Make you feel what the character does, and question how you would have handled a situation? Warren makes me do that with every single book I read of hers!

I think this just might be my favorite Warren book! That being said, I cannot wait to see what other wonderful stories and heroes we will see in this series. If only time could go by a little quicker.......

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Ex-bull rider and Montana rancher, Knox Marshall works hard raising champion bucking bulls for the NBR-X. His life is ordinary, stable, and expected, he has worked hard to bring the family ranch back into the black, but he wonders if he has settled for less than his potential.

Kelsey Jones is a rising star with the Country singing group, The Yankee Belles. She struggles with anxiety when not onstage, after an explosion at the expo, her nightmares come back in full force.

Can Knox and Kelsey get to the bottom of who is behind the costly explosion, and give love a try?

A fantastic new book from best-selling author Susan May Warren, I was thrilled to find her new series at my local library, and even more thrilled when I recognized many familiar faces from her previous novels. Strong new characters, great interaction, engaging plot, and strong faith, make this book near impossible to put down.

Multiple relationships are what drive this book, with the bond of brothers, new and old friends. I also like how this book follows Tate, Knox's younger brother who is a bodyguard charged with protecting singer, Glo. The interaction and dialogue are really well written in this book.

Overall, a highly enjoyable read, a great introduction to a new series, with a fantastic balance of faith, family, relationships, as well as a mystery. A must read for all Susan May Warren fans, and a great introduction if you've never read her books before.

Books reviewed are checked out from my local library or purchased with my own money, unless otherwise noted.

This was my first Warren book and it was a five star for me. I particularly like it when romance authors make you believe this exact guy is perfect for that exact girl, rather than "they were a warm (and attractive) body who just happened to be there at the moment." Kelsey needed a man just like Knox, when he believed that his character traits weren't anything anyone would be drawn to.
I have a personal preference for character-driven rather than suspense driven-plots, and this had the right amount of suspense for me.
And I have an extra soft spot for romance books that include the entire family because let's be honest, most of us don't fall in love in a vacuum. The community around a person is so key. It matters that Tate is there, treating Kelsey like a sister and learning key things about her life and almost knocks Knox flat when he sees her crying. It matters that Reuben shows up ready to work the ranch and the brothers are able to work through what had unraveled between them. All these things affect how Knox and Kelsey are able to think about their relationship and I enjoy when a book includes the layers of family. I enjoyed seeing the different siblings' perspectives and I enjoyed their internal dialogue.
I think my main gripe with this book (besides the complete unrealistic idea of NYC police showing old case files to random dudes) is the focus on the physical attractiveness. Can we just fall in love without having to have constant reminders of muscles and curves?

Equal parts family drama, modern western, and romantic suspense, the first installment in Susan’s new Marshall Family series, Knox, sets the bar and the excitement level high for the rest of the series to come!

Susan May Warren always manages to perfectly balance story, character development, and strong themes all in a fast-paced package. In this case, action, ranching, and life as a rising country band combine with the steadiness of Knox and the strength of Kelsey; likable and supportive (in a friendship and brotherhood way) secondary characters; and themes of compassion and the steadfastness of God’s love.

I was thrilled to encounter cameos and mentions of some favorite characters from Susan’s previous series, some of which I know I still need to read! Also, the references to music, TV westerns, and pop culture (hello, Kevin Costner and Bodyguard) were wonderfully incorporated into the story and just plain fun.

Oh, and since Susan’s stories are all wonderfully connected and layered, the next book is set up well. With the way THIS ONE ENDS, I need Tate’s story NOW!

What a great start to a new series! I loved the combination of romance and suspense that was woven throughout the book. Kelsey and Knox both had multiple layers to wade through as the reader got to know them.

Kelsey definitely had a traumatic past that still haunted her throughout this novel. I absolutely loved the effect that Knox had on her, a calming and protective feeling that was amped up with lots of attraction. It was a great blend. And Knox walked the line of hero and protector, while also juggling so much weight of responsibility for his family ranch.

I loved getting to see characters that I knew from previous books make small appearances in this novel. But, not to worry. If someone had not read the other series, they would still follow the storyline of Knox just fine, as these character glimpses are not dependant on a great knowledge of past books and situations and simply provide a little treat to readers who have enjoyed other books by this author.

I am anxiously looking forward to reading the next novel in this series!

So yes, I'm late to the Montana Marshalls party, but better late than never, right?! And book one is chock full of the kind of angst-riddled family drama that Warren does so well. She barely gives her reader's a chance to breathe let alone reach for comfort chocolate! Intense from the very first page -- both with the suspense and the romance and the family dynamics and brother Tate and...well...you might just need to pace your reading withe some zen yoga moves in order to make it safely to the end.

Susan May Warren did a fantastic job. Knox is a book that has enough action to keep you on the edge of your seat and enough romance to make you swoon. Knox Marshall is a good ‘ol cowboy who loves fiercely and protects those he loves with all of himself. Over the course of this book you get the privilege of meeting Knox’s siblings, I have fallen completely in love with the entire family. I can not wait to read the rest of this amazing new series.

Great beginning to a great brand new series by Susan May Warren!
Knox is one of four brothers of the Marshall family from Montana. Knox is a cowboy who is the one who was left to care for the families ranch. He meets the girl who brings him to life but he will have to keep her safe from someone from her past who is intent on killing her. Nonstop action, suspense, and intrigue kept me turning page after page until I finished reading it! Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

My thoughts: KNOX is the first book in Ms. Warren's riveting new series. It didn't end with a deep sigh, it ended with "What? When is the next book coming out?" I told my daughter I may never read another book again - nobody can top Susan May Warren.

Okay, I went in it iffy. Rodeos are not my scene. Bull riders have a few screws loose in the heads. I do not like country music and beer halls are NOT my thing. BUT despite that I fell madly in love with Knox and Kelsey (whose name was way to close to his first lovers name, Chelsea) and shoot I even like Hot Pete!

There were plenty of twists, some former characters making a reappearance, and lots of drama and swoony kisses, all adding up to a book you shouldn't pick up if you are on a work related deadline. Or at bedtime.

The faith message is strong too, though I did wonder about personal relationships with God, and it ministered to me at times.

Okay, for the more conservative crowd, there is beer drinking and country dancing. Short-shorts and a few other things.

And I cannot wait to read Tate and Glo's story. Now to come down from a Susan May Warren high.

I was given an ecopy free. I bought the paperback version, and all opinions are my own.

Knox holds a special place in my reader heart because I have a serious soft spot for mister steady heroes. Even when Knox experiences disappointment and heartache, he just keeps on keeping on with a hearty dose of “get ‘er done!” He’s equal parts strength, compassion, and determination.

Kelsey is a modern-day damsel in distress but she’s also incredibly strong, resilient, and capable. I enjoyed all the modern country music and songwriting references in the story. Kelsey’s past is painful yet powerfully inspiring.

Personally, I love the way Warren’s stories are intertwined (yet able to stand alone) within an ever-expanding fictional universe. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of the series!

“You’ll never find your path by looking at yourself, Knox.”

Now I know what all the hype was about with this series of books. A friend loaned me Knox and I was hooked from the first page. A master at storytelling, Warren has impeccably set the scene for the Marshall family with plenty of action, drama, emotion, and humor. I was pleasantly surprised by the deep emotional pull one of the characters had on me. I could so clearly relate to the frustration felt when her world was turned upside down. I especially like that the book spends an almost equal amount of time on two siblings and their love interests. Warren gives multiple POVs from the characters and I love it! The second book will pick up where this first one leaves off like a season finale of a TV show. This is a contemporary romantic suspense and showcases the famous chemistry between characters that Warren is so good at writing.

Such a great book! I couldn’t put it down. It’s a suck-you-in-be-ready-to-disregard-all-aspects-of-adulting kind of book-and completely worth it!!! I really enjoy the adventures, romance, and mystery in Ms. Warren’s stories. This will be a super fabulous series. I am already counting down to the next one-these will flow so much into each other that you won’t want to put any of them down!!
