Well, this is the last volume before the last volume.
And that's probably a good thing. I don't see myself hanging in there for much more of this story, even though it's technically interesting. It just kind of needs to wrap up - if you know what I mean?

description

I do appreciate that things look like they might be coming together and I love the design and look of the world itself. There are a lot of cool characters in this, the plot is pretty unique, the art is great, and this is a solid addition to the story.

description

I still can't say I care much one way or the other how Armageddon turns out for these guys, which is probably my biggest complaint overall about this title. It's different, and it's worth checking out the first few volumes to see if this is your jam, but I can tell it's not going to end up being one of my personal favorites. It's a 4 star story that I just can't muster up many shits for, and I know that really doesn't make sense.

The penultimate volume. Final moves are being made by some of the Chosen for dominion over their peers even as the three Horsemen continue their march towards Apocalypse. This volume is packed with back stories, which although really interesting and visually captivating come with no real shocks or surprises.

As with the previous volume this series continues to not reach my earlier (very high) expectations, it's not getting any poorer, but at this stage I expected the series to really be ticking-up, but instead it just maintains the (good) heights it has always had. I suppose the real tell, is that 9 volumes in, I don't care about any of the characters or what happens to them, maybe because they are all empowered or privilege - there are no under dogs! The art and constructed reality are still very good though. 8 out of 12.

Holy fucking shit... are you guys reading this series? If not, start reading this. Holy shit.

What’s it about?
Not much I can say without spoilers to previous volumes. Basically this is the volume before the final volume and Death has some serious business with the other 3 horsemen. Not to mention the political things in this series are getting crazier than ever!

Why it gets 5 stars:
The story is still interesting. There are a lot of things that happen in these 4 issues before the big finale.
The art... oh boy I love the art. Dragotta seems to be getting even better with each volume! Every page just looks so fucking amazing!
The characters are very interesting. I love how developed and well written they are. Not to mention that there are so many but I’m able to mostly remember who’s who. Maybe it’s because it’s a comic so I get an image of them but I think it also has a lot to do with how interesting they are.
The action scenes are fucking insane throughout. Seriously, possibly some of the best action in comics is here in this volume! Every page is exciting as hell!
This volume is pretty unpredictable.
There’s a bit of good comic relief.
The ending! Holy shit, that ending. This is one of the craziest endings in comics! It’s insane. I need the next volume!

Overall:
This series is absolutely amazing! There’s only one more volume after this and let me tell you, it’s been amazing throughout so far.
This volume contains an epic continuation of an excellent story along with outstanding art, fantastic action scenes throughout and very interesting characters.
East of West is possibly my favorite comic and definitely my favorite apocalyptic story! This is a series I can’t recommend enough. If you haven’t at least tried this series yet either you’re too young (I would recommend for high school age and older) or are making a mistake.

5/5

Ooh ooh, you are all so screwed
Ooh ooh, you are all so screwed

You best not call me, you must be crazy
When callin’ out for Death
You motherfuckers best run for cover
The whole world is about to end,

Everybody is in deep shit
Only gonna piss me off real quick
When you try to fuck me, you must be crazy
BLAM! I guess that is the end

I’m getting info and revenge, takin’ their lives
You know I ain't going away without a fight
I can't be reasoned with, I‘ll get my son and wife
There were once four horsemen, it’s minus one this time

Haven't I made it obvious?
The fuckin’ end is near
Want me to spell it out for you?
I’m the horseman of death
Haven't I made it obvious?
The fuckin’ end is near
Want me to spell it out for you?
I’m the horseman of death
So many people dead

Have you got no shame? You looking insane
You fucking power whores
The factions at war and beasts being born
Politickin’ like never before

Don't mess it up, talking that shit
Only gonna piss me off, real quick
Have you got no shame? You must be insane
BLAM! I guess that is the end

I’m getting info and revenge, takin’ their lives
You know I ain't going away without a fight
I can't be reasoned with, I‘ll get my son and wife

Want me to spell it out for you?
I’m the horseman of death
So many people dead

D-E-A-T-H oh yes
That's how you fucking spell "death"
I am the horseman of death
Get bullets inside their heads
No, no, yeah, uh, ah
I am the horseman of death
They’ll be dead

I’m getting info and revenge, takin’ their lives
You know I ain't going away without a fight
I can't be reasoned with, I‘ll get my son and wife
There were once four horsemen, it’s minus one this time

Haven't I made it obvious?
The fuckin’ end is near
Want me to spell it out for you?

Haven't I made it obvious? (I’ve made it pretty obvious)

Probably the best volume of East of West since the end of Year One. A lot of things finally start to get clearer, there's some genuine character work, and pretty much every page has some explosive revelation or a brilliant emotionally charged scene. Nick Dragotta's art with Frank Martin's colors are the best they've ever been throughout the whole run, too. This entire volume is just crackling with awesomeness, and I couldn't be more excited for the next and final book of this fantastic series.

This whole series is so well done and the consistent art theme through out really ties it together. High recommendation.

I can't believe the end of the world is almost here. I plan on re-reading all of this at once, to get the larger picture when I'm done, only because so much can be lost mentally between releases. But the scope, world building, art and characterization have been on point and meticulously constructed from day one. I love this book, and I can't even fathom the ending falling flat.

Bullet Review:

It has been so long since I read volume 8, I actually got volumes 6, 7 and 8 and then looked here and realized, oh, yeah, I did read all of them once upon a time. I thought for a moment about rereading, but honestly, this is a series where I'd have to go back to volume 1 to truly remember all the bits and bobs of this story.

In this volume, we get a bit of backstory - between Wolf and John and the conflict between War and Death. The series continues to tiptoe to the edge of the apocalypse - Archibald continues to be one of my favorite characters.

Where is the ending and what will it look like? I don't even know if Hickman knows, but at least if he's flying by the seat of his pants with this series, it's not the mess of Remender and the awful Black Science/Deadly Class.

I liked this volume, some questions are starting to get answered. East of West is winding down and I am proud to say I am happy about that. After 9 volumes I am read for the conclusion because the story is, at times, hard to remember and navigate (for me). I like the characters especially death and his story but the rest of the warring nations BS I am done with, i don't care anymore. Ready for the end.

Holy shit...

So the prince, we saw what happened last volume. What happened? We get the truth here. Next up we have Death verse his brother/sisters. Or least he's about to when his son is in danger these guys are really pushing him. Mao is ready to march and end this whole damn world in her own way. Everything is actually coming to a big final confrontation with everyone hating each other.

I'm trying to keep this spoiler free but East of West really turned around for me. It was good at the start, great in the middle, and the ending so far is fantastic. So excited to get my hands on the final volume. I hope it ends as strong as it has been. A easy 5 out of 5. Hickman's strongest work so far.

THE LAST ISSUE IS SO GOOD!!!
Also, is it me or the artwork just keeps getting better? The colors, man. I love reading this series and looking at each panel.
Anyway, one volume left and I feel like this was such a great set-up for the ending, it left me excited and best of all, I still don't see a clear ending so I'm going to be surprised and I know I won't be disappointed.

East of West moves closer to the end times, but it does so without really answering any questions. Instead, characters expound blandly to their foils while preparing for war. The Message is referenced, yet nine volumes in, I'm still not sure of its significance. Wolf and the Prince team up, best budz forever. Chamberlain chews scenery.

The best bits of this volume involve Death battling the resurrected Psalms while the Horsemen steal his son. But even these bits feel rather perfunctory. Of course the Horsemen and Death were going to come head to head eventually, but this meeting feels like it could have happened several volumes ago.

The final issue details Death's original falling out with the Horsemen. It's gorgeously violent, but disappointingly un-revelatory. If anything, it makes the Chosens' roles in this whole deal more confusing. Especially Bel Solomon. I haven't been able to grasp that character since the early volumes and it seems like he's going to have a big role in the concluding chapter. Oh well, on to the finale.

This is my favorite comics series and it continues to be awesome.

The art is great (really, the armor of different nations, the fight scenes, the creatures...), the characters are interesting, the story is complex but not difficult to follow. What really perplexes me is that the next volume is supposed to be the last one. I have NO idea how they will tie up all the plot lines and how it will all end.

If you're into westerns, fantasy and apocalyptic themes (this one is pre-apocalyptic, but don't worry, it gets dark), I highly recommend reading this comic (from the beginning, of course).

(4 of 5 for a good finale)
And I really mean good, not great. It kind of slowed down, thanks to more contemplating scenes, flashback scenes (their importance yet to be seen), and movement of the story. I also realised how I don't like the horsemen characters. And I mean all horsemen, even the Death. Sure, he is the best, but of all the characters there they are the least complex, least lively ones and borderline boring. Chamberlain or Le Vay are/were better antagonists. I do care about them, unlike the horsemen. They are only annoying flies in the overall story. Death somehow works for the story development, but the rest three are a pain in the ass for it.
Anyway, this was a little bump there, let's move to the final book with high hopes that Hickman delivers or dies trying.

East of West doesn’t have arcs like other comics. It’s all just one huge story, so the collections don’t have a proper beginning or a proper ending. But every installment of the series brings everyone closer and closer to their inexorable end, and I know most, if not all, of the characters I have grown to love or hate will go down screaming, and I will mourn them. Even fucking Andrew Archibald Chamberlain, massive prick that he is.

“We would tell you to pray, but it wouldn’t do any good. You have earned what is coming to you.”

That’s on the back of every volume, but it only feels more relevant every time. Sometimes it feels like this fictional apocalypse has been going on even longer than the real thing. Put it this way – just going by my read dates, David Bowie could have read the first four volumes, and I think the consensus has his death as the opening of the first seal.
(Although I am now picturing a Ziggy Stardust seal, which is making me happy)

”Can you even remember a time when you couldn’t taste violence in the air? I do. I remember. I remember people saying things would never get this bad. That it would never come to this. Blood on the ground. And ash in the sky.”

If I’m honest, the gaps between slim and enigmatic volumes are such that I tend to forget some of the machinations, and several of the characters, each time. Too many of the big players have made it too far to be entirely plausible given the level of carnage. The revelations here about Death’s rupture with the other three Horsemen feel disappointingly human – one might almost say pedestrian. And the lettering is still lumbered with painful overuse of italics.

But the mood of impending doom? Oh, Hickman and Dragotta capture that beautifully.

”’The end of all things’ is…a debatable phrase. And depending on the interpretation, well, an end does not negate the idea of a new beginning.”

Here’s hoping, eh?

I find myself in the odd situation of adoring this series but also feeling like I've forgotten 90% of what's come before. It's definitely a series that will benefit from re-reads I think. Meanwhile the art continues to be fantastic, the characters continue to be complex and compelling, and the end of the world continues to be imminent.

I am glad this is the penultimate, I can’t wait to see how this end. However, I feel like we are just dragging this out. Same reason I wouldn’t want to more seasons of Game of Thrones.

I will have to re read and rerate when they are all out.

The end is nigh.
Fantastic volume. I can't believe there's only one left for me to read. I love this so fucking much and don't want it to end.
Things are reaching a head between Death and the other horsemen, especially his most hated of the three, War. Shit's about to kick off.
War is looming on the horizon between the nations of America. The end of the world is in sight and I really can't wait to see how it all ends. But the way things are looking currently in the story--and the general tone and outlook the series has had so far--I can't see it being a happy ending. All I want is Death and his family to be safe. And maybe Wolf, Crow, and Crown Prince John to get out alive. The rest are terrible people and can go hang. Great characters... but terrible people.

The art is stunning and goes from strength to strength. Every page is a winner and has me stopping to appreciate. There's this gorgeously depicted stand-off between Death and War painted in a striking contrast of red and white within a field of tall grass and it's so beautiful and dynamic on the page, that I sat for ages just staring at the beauty, contemplating whether it would be a bad thing to buy another volume of nine just to slice out those two pages and frame them. (One day. One day for sure.) Simply stunning.

Did I immediately buy volume ten as soon as finishing volume nine?
Yes...yes I did.
No regrets.

Hickman's long-running sci-fi/post-apocalyptic western is clearly drawing to a close, which gives me greater confidence in his ability to stick the landing, as if there's no hint of an ending by the end of the penultimate trade I've found the odds of a failed or deus ex machina ending go up exponentially. We see Death finally really truly kick loose in this volume, twice once in the present time-line and once in a flashback.

All the players are gathering, their final pieces in motion, and it should be one heck of an ending when the final volume comes.

more 3.5 for me.

The penultimate volume.
I'm ready for the conclusion - its not a long series by any means, and it's interesting, extremely original and unexpected, but something feels too distant. I think my largest problem with this series, is that I don't really have a favorite charecter, and don't even care too much how it will end. I WANT to know out of curiosity, but my emotional involvement is kinda minimal.
Let's hope that the last part of the story whould make the journey worthwhile.

We finally see it. The beginning. Or far enough back to be our beginning.

This all makes so much more sense now. Before there was a lot of faith. Faith that the motivations were realistic or believable.

Now we know.

Oh, and of course we now have like 9 new questions.
