4.5 Much Better than book one Stars

I enjoyed Hard Evidence so much more than I did book one. I loved Julian. He was just so damaged and sexy. He was the perfect combo of asshole and protective sweetheart. I also really liked Tessa. Although she did some things I thought ditzy and down right stupid she was relatable. Her pursuit of the bad guys made more sense. You could understand were she was coming from even if she did recklessly put her life at risk. Julian and Tessa were great together. The plot line was more intriguing in this book. Overall a great read and I am looking forward to the next book.

INVESTIGATION REPORT ON HARD EVIDENCE

THE ALLEGATIONS

There has been a recent spate of 5-Star reviews of Pamela Clare’s I-Team series at Goodreads. As a result, an investigation was launched into the allegations of how amazing this series is.

My initial investigation into the engrossing and thought-provoking Extreme Exposure has made this investigator think that there is indeed some validity to these claims. In an attempt to obtain corroborative evidence and ensure a more thorough analysis, I jumped right into Hard Evidence.

There have been also been claims about a gorgeous to-die-for tortured hero, who goes by the name of Julian Darcangelo. This investigator takes claims of “to-die-for”-ness very seriously and was especially keen to go... deep... on this.

PERSONS OF INTEREST:

Tessa Novak a.k.a “The Heroine”

Tessa Novak is described as having long, curly blonde hair, creamy skin, big blue eyes with long sooty lashes, and has a Southern accent. She is an investigative crime reporter with The Denver Independent and is known for being tenacious, though this sometimes leads her to take some foolish risks.

She recently witnessed a drive-by shooting at a gas-station, while in desperate search of coffee. She is a caffeine addict. As a result of seeing a teenage girl gunned down in front of her, Tessa became personally invested in finding justice for the victim. Her investigations led her into extremely dangerous …including dangerously sizzling and sexy …situations.

Julian Darcangelo a.k.a “The Hero”

Julian Darcangelo is described as having dark hair, usually pulled back in a shoulder-length ponytail. He has olive skin, mesmerising blue eyes and a devastating mouth. He is usually seen in jeans and a black leather jacket. The air of menace about him is magnetically attractive for any “bad-boy” aficionado.

Julian is an undercover FBI agent who has been hot on the trail of a heinous human trafficker and killer, and is close to getting his man. The Heroine’s own investigations, however, threaten to jeopardise all that Julian has worked for. This leads to some very…heated…scenes between the Hero and Heroine. It is a good thing these scenes were successfully documented by Ms. Clare.

VISUAL LIKENESS OF THE PERSONS OF INTEREST:

Facial Composites of The Heroine:

Tessa Novak (A striking resemblance to Emily Procter)

Facial Composites of The Hero:

(Physical Composites of the torso have also been included. This is essential in homage to Pamela Clare’s “Man-Titty Monday Specials - MTM”.)

Julian Darcangelo (A striking resemblance to Raffaello Balzo)

Composite of Julian’s Leather Jacket:

FINDINGS:

I had my doubts, at first, about the claims of Julian Darcangelo’s “to-die-for” status amongst readers. Initial impressions of Darcangelo’s hard-ass, cold and distant attitude towards Tessa caused me to question whether I could truly connect with him, on a deep level.

However, a raw and intense “breakthrough” scene between Julian and Tessa changed this. Julian’s barriers were not merely stripped, but ripped, bare during this scene. It was a deeply emotional scene that had this investigator in tears, feeling heart-wrenched and longing to wrap my arms around Julian. This was a pivotal moment not only for Tessa and Julian, which sealed their connection to each other soul-to-soul, but resulted in a piece of this investigator’s heart being stolen by this tortured hero. This investigator is in awe of Ms. Clare’s writing in this edgy and powerful scene, though while controversial for some, in my opinion was pivotal and made this book a 5-Star!!! read.

A second investigation of this book had me realising my initial connection problems to Julian were a result of having somehow overlooked vital information provided earlier in the story. Thus, without this information enabling me to view Julian’s behaviour through the lenses of how his tragic past and the darkness of his undercover work had shaped him, only his “current” cold behaviour had been in sharp focus, creating a distorted image of Julian.

Though, Hard Evidence isn’t just a sizzling romance. The portrayal by Ms. Clare of the horrific nature of human trafficking and the sex trade is a sad reminder that this horror is a reality for the victims (the women, children and their families) of this crime.

This investigator is particularly appreciative of Ms. Clare for penning the SQUEEE!!!-inducing scene in the Epilogue. Gee-suz! Seriously awesome scene! *wide grin*

CONCLUSION: Clearly, the reviews and claims about this book, Julian Darcangelo, and the I-Team series are highly justified.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

1. If someone matching the visual likeness of Julian Darcangelo is located, contact Detective Lady Jayne IMMEDIATELY. A strip search will be necessary. ^_^

2. If one hasn’t read the I-Team series by Pamela Clare yet, that dire situation should be rectified as a matter of urgency.

Continuing on with my re-read of this series! :D I adored the first book which I thought was pretty suspenseful, but I keep forgetting that with each new book in the series, the author takes the suspense up a notch so plot-wise this was even better than Extreme Exposure! And then there’s the fact that the author has created this irresistible, protective hero Julian that I couldn’t help but swoon over...

"I’m half Italian."
"Which half?" the words were out before Tessa could stop them. Was she flirting with him? She never flirted with men.
His lips curved in a slow, sexy smile that made her heart trip. "From the waist down."

Hehe ;)

So this is book 2 in the I-team series and investigative journalist Tessa Novak’s story. I remember when I was reading book 1 for the very first time and saw that Tessa would be the next I-team member to get a book, I honestly wasn’t looking forward to it (I still thought the same while I read it now). Don’t get me wrong, she’s a wonderful heroine, really mature, and great at her job but there wasn’t anything about her that made her stand out from the other I-team members. She’s what I like to call a quiet heroine, and her sweet southern belle personality wasn’t something I was fond of. I like bold, outspoken, gutsy heroines and while Tessa was strong in her own way, she had a very timid side that the author captured in the romance aspect of the book. In short, Tessa is a pretty average heroine to me because she didn’t add anything to the story but certainly didn’t take away from it either.

The main highlight of the book for me besides the nail-biting suspense was definitely the hero Julian. I’ve said this so many times before but it’s worth mentioning again: this author creates some of the BEST literary heroes ever!! No matter their pasts, their occupation, their ordeals and tribulations, there is always this core code of honor each of her men have and this innate sense to protect. There’s no other way of saying it – her men are so male. Julian is all the above and more. I loved him when I read about his dedication to bringing down a huge sex trafficking ring and how that has affected him personally. I loved him even more when he willingly let his undercover agent persona get compromised if it meant he could protect Tessa. So yeah...while I wasn’t a huge fan of Tessa, I do have to admit she was perfect for Julian. His ugly, heartbreaking past is slowly revealed as the story progresses, and it made sense that a broken, but resilient man like him would be drawn to and find comfort with a sweet angel like Tessa.

description

Another thing that I have to mention is how amazing this author’s attention to detail is. Even down to the smallest things, nothing is left out but not detailed to the point where the plot is boring. It’s obvious that she’s done her research and I could really feel the love and passion she has for journalism and the topics she incorporates into the story. The writing flowed in a way where I’m eased into the story so not everything is thrown at me all at once. It’s just really well-paced!

For this series, it’s especially hard for me to pick favorites because I seriously love each book for different reasons BUT I’d have to say that I liked this second book a little less than the others. Don’t take that in a negative way though because I still really enjoyed it. What makes the difference between the really good books (which this book was!) and the stellar, outstanding ones are how strongly I feel about the characters. Julian shined brightly but because Tessa was an average heroine to me, the character dynamic felt unbalanced. I still recommend it though! The suspense, the well-researched sex trafficking aspect, and the amazing hero are all worth it. And of course if you don’t mind a more sweet and timid heroine like Tessa I’d say you’ll like this book just fine. As for me, I’m beyond excited to get to books 3, 4, and 5 because those were all 5+ star favorites of mine :D

Hard Evidence is the 2nd book in the I-team series and can be read as a standalone. The investigative topic focused on in this story is sex trafficking. Series reading order:

Hard Evidence is book 2 in the suspense filled I-Team series. This story focuses on one of the most horrific crimes imaginable – the buying and selling of human beings. It is something that I find so abhorrent, and how anyone can look into the face of an innocent child and think that it’s ok to force them into a life of prostitution or worse... is beyond my ability to comprehend. It takes a truly evil person to be capable of such atrocities, and I’ve no doubt that there’s a special place in hell just for men and women like the scum of the earth bad guy in this story.

It couldn't have been easy but Ms. Clare gives us a clear, albeit brief, glimpse into the lives of these victims - what they endure, how they are physically controlled, emotionally manipulated and ultimately disposed of when they are no longer useful, and at no time did the information seem too intense or too graphic. While this story is definitely entertaining, it was also quite an education. We are taken from something we just hear about in the news to something I felt like I was actually there for, watching through the eyes of those working this case, and that’s why I connected with the victims on a more personal - one human being to another - level. They are not just stories, not just words in a book or on the front page of a newspaper. They are people. Mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, friends, neighbors… they are people who matter and Pamela Clare imparted all of this in a compelling, informative and heartbreakingly real way.

Julian Darcangelo is an undercover FBI agent working with the Denver Police Department to help bring down a human trafficking ring. He’s been on this case for many years and now he’s this close **holds up thumb and forefinger to indicate about a quarter of an inch** to finding Alexi Burien, the mastermind behind this heinous operation and who has managed to stay one step ahead of him the entire time. It’s not just a job to Julian, it’s an obsession. It’s his life – what he eats, breathes and lives for, even in his sleep, is finding Burien and putting him out of business, once and for all. Like all the very best heroes across the genres, Julian has a few demons from his past, keeping him from forgiving himself for a mission which went horribly wrong – one he fully blames himself for. Now, as tragic as that sounds, it makes him all the more in need of loving, cuddling and hot sex… oh, sorry, did I say that “hot sex” part out loud? Well, whatever! It’s true, and I volunteer for the job because that’s just the kind of selfless person I am.

But I digress….

Tessa Novak is the cop reporter for the Denver Independent newspaper’s I -Team, an elite lineup of investigative reporters. Tessa has some secrets of her own, a past that she’s ashamed of, a past none of her coworkers know about. She’s relentless, feisty, and very, very good at what she does and she’s about to have her chance to prove that she’s worthy of a place on the I-Team. While stopping at a local convenience store for her much needed caffeine fix, she becomes an up close and personal witness to a drive by shooting in which a 16 year old girl is the gunman’s target. What Tessa witnessed, a cold, calculated murder has now become her sole focus. She’s determined to find out the whos, whats, whys and wheres of this senseless killing and in doing so gives new meaning to the word tenacious. Her first mission is to find the man in the dark leather jacket, who she saw hiding in the shadows at the scene of the crime.

We’re also treated to revisits with the rest of the I-Team members and their significant others. In one of the cutest scenes in the book, Reece, Julian and Will are up working on the roof at Julian’s house:

Julian looked down from the roof to find five pairs of sunglasses staring up at them, as if painting trim were a women’s spectators sport. “Are they always like this?”

“Yes,” Reece and Will said together, smiling.

Reece pulled his shirt over his head, dropped it to the ground below. “Personally, I enjoy being treated like a sex symbol—especially by my wife.”

“Think of it as an investment.” Will took off his shirt, as well, displaying his football-player physique. “You’ll reap the benefits in the bedroom tonight.”

Julian grinned. “Alright then boys—let’s work it.”

He pulled off his shirt, picked up his bottle of water and drank, letting it spill down his throat and over his bare chest.

From below, he thought he heard Holly groan.

Now, that scene takes place at the end of the book, in the epilogue, after the bad guys are disposed of and life is back to normal. Where many authors just wrap up the story and give us an “and they lived happily ever after,” Ms Clare shows us their happily ever afters which I just love, and is a must for me if a novel is going to earn a 5 star rating. It’s the attention to detail throughout the stories and these special little moments and finishing touches that, for me, make these books stand out above the rest.

The bottom line? What we have with Hard Evidence is an amazing story and unforgettable characters who, with the help of an incredible author, have given us a look into the darker side of humanity and have done so with such depth, such a compelling sense of duty, that I literally could not put this book down and as soon as I was through, wanted to pick it up and start it all over again. The relationship building between Julian and Tessa was sweet, believable and burning up the pages with steamy hot sex done the Pamela Clare way - sizzling hot! You’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat and you’ll stay there from the first page to the last! This author has romantic suspense down to a fine art and aren’t I just thrilled to have found such an exciting series to feed my addiction of this genre!

The I-Team reading order, so far:

1. Extreme Exposure
1.5 Heaven Can't Wait - a novella found in the out of print anthology Catch of the Day and on ebook
2. Hard Evidence
3. Unlawful Contact
4. Naked Edge
5. Breaking Point
5.5. Skin Deep
5.9. First Strike

5 stars – Romantic Suspense

This is a very intelligent, well-crafted, intense, smokin’ hot, edge-of-your seat romantic suspense thriller!

Tessa Novak is an investigative reporter who embarks on a crusade of justice after personally witnessing a brutal drive-by shooting of a teenage girl at a convenient store. It’s not long before her investigation and naïve journalistic ideals put her in danger, from both the mafia crime syndicate behind the murder and the attraction she feels for sexy, cynical, hardened, undercover FBI agent Julian Darcangelo.

As Tessa digs deeper into the teen girl’s murder, she discovers connections to the Russian mafia that makes her the prime target of the human trafficking syndicate’s sadistic ring leader, whom Julian has been trying to bring down for three years. Now it’s up to Julian to keep Tessa safe and stop the violent mob leader/killer before he goes further underground, but can they resist the volatile attraction they feel for each other?

Whew...Tessa and Julian’s love scenes were SIZZLING hot! Julian is a cold, hard-edged, arrogant, black leather jacket wearing, ponytailed, Latin/Italian alpha hottie, tortured bad boy with an attitude, stud in bed, hero to die for who has lost faith in ever having a “normal” life due to his painful, violent past and the brutal nature of his undercover work. Julian doesn’t think he deserves a home, wife, kids, and happily ever after, nor does he want those things; that is until he spends time with brave, hopeful, innocent, beautiful Tessa, who stirs and twists up emotions in him that he doesn’t really know how to handle. The romance between Julian and Tessa is explosive, yet achingly sad and tender at the same time, and I wanted so much for them to get their HEA.

I highly recommend this for fans of dark, edgy, well-written, steamy romantic suspense thrillers! 5 stars!

Hard Evidence was an excellent book. It quenched my thirst for good romantic suspense, that's not just about a hot hero and a cute, likable heroine scratching an itch while dodging bullets, and ultimately falling in love. No, there's nothing wrong with that. But it's great to read something that goes deeper and touches on issues that are real and meaningful in the world today while I get my high octane romance fix.

Julian is a man who has spent most of his life in the dark. He started out with a less than ideal childhood, a truly heartbreaking childhood, and channeled that into undercover law enforcement. He's seen only the worst of people. And while he believes that this has barred him from the possibility of a good, normal life and a good woman, undeserving of both, he is a very good man. He has put his life, soul and sanity on the line everyday to help the helpless. That made me love him. He's a gorgeous, sexy man in every way, but it was his heart that touched me the deepest.

Tessa is a crusader in a different way. She works as an investigative journalist to use the print media to bring positive change. Some of the risks she takes makes my hair stand on end. (And knowing that the writer, Ms. Clare taps from her own experiences in journalism makes it even more harrowing). Sometimes I wanted to ask her if she was crazy. But I also understand her need to help others, to use what God gave her to effect change in a world where too many people either don't know, don't care, or look the other way.

These two together make sense in a beautiful way. It was a pleasure to read their emotional, highly sensual, and meaningful love story. I started out reading this slowly (around my other review read), just taking it all in, enjoying the leisurely visit with Tessa and Julian, and soon I couldn't put the book down because I was so compelled to see what happened next.

Hard Evidence does hit hard with the realism of this world in which underage/teenage girls are abused, brutalized, and treated as objects and commodities. It makes me upset and angry to know that this is really happening, and it made me cheer for Julian (who is so well named, for he is a Dark Angel), and Tessa, who is an angel of justice from a whole different direction to do what they could to help those girls. Sometimes it seems as though the good guys don't win nearly enough, and it's too easy to give up the fight. But reading about heroes in these books like Tessa and Julian, that they represent the many unsung heroes, and knowing that there are those in real life who sacrifice and strive to make this world a better place is hugely encouraging. Some dark subject matter, but ultimately hopeful. A beautiful love story in which the light of love shines into places where most angels fear to tread, but not these in this book. Highly recommended!

This started out okay, but by the third or fourth chapter it was clear the heroine was TSTL and every reason I hate journalists as main protagonists. She got in the way of everything, refusing to listen and jeopardizing all the people the investigation was hoping to save in the end. And somehow her mantra of 'I'm a journalist, I have a responsibility to tell the truth! I'm trying to save people by outing your entire investigation on the front page!" is not only accepted, but admired by characters with a heck of a lot more sense.

Julian would have been a pretty great hero except that I can't respect a guy who falls in love with such a TSTL, monkeywrench heroine. He's broody, angsty, and verra sexy. Terrible taste in women, but who's perfect?

And yet, I have to admit I finished the book and found it hard to put down after a certain point. I suppose I accepted that it was going to be cheesy and let myself enjoy the nonsense. And, yes, I'll be reading the next one. Why? OCD, no doubt.

Pamela Clare is a good author, but her contemporaries are simply junk food. If you want something all around good, go with her historicals. But, if you want a quick fix of steamy sex and hot heroes (and let's face it, we all do sometimes), the I-Team will scratch that itch.

ETA: someone just gave me a "like" (thank you!) for this review and brought it back to my attention. While I still don't like Tessa a bit and I've never reread this one, I want to amend what I said about PC and her contemporaries. After this one she totally found her groove and I now count her as one of the best -- if not THE best -- romantic suspense authors writing today. She's also quite good at straight contemporary.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. It was that good! This is the second book in Pamela Clare's I-Team series, and while all three were excellent reads, this one is my favorite by far!

Tessa Novak is an investigative reporter for the 'Denver Independent' newspaper. While stopping for coffee (her secret vice) at a gas station/convenience store, she happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, witnessing the drive-by murder of a teenage girl. After the murder, Tessa notices a mysterious handsome man in a black leather jacket lurking near the crime scene. Could he have something to do with the young teen's murder?

The mysterious man is Julian Darcangelo, an undercover FBI agent working with the local police. He's trying to track a notorious, sadistic Russian crime lord, who is a human trafficker and killer. If Tessa accuses Julian of having something to do with the teen's murder, she could blow his cover. He needs her away from the investigation.

Not realizing the reason for the murder, Tessa writes an eye-witness account for her newspaper, endangering her own life and possibly Julian's too. The killer wants any witnesses dead, and that means Tessa. Julian feels obligated to protect her; he can't bear the thought of losing one more innocent person to the sadistic Russian mobster.

But Tessa won't stop her own investigation. She can't get over what she has witnessed, and she's determined to seek the truth and justice for the young victim. Was this a gang or drug killing, or something even more sinister?

Julian ends up saving Tessa's life a number of times, and what starts out as a powerful sexual attraction between a 'good girl' and 'bad boy', develops into much more when they are forced to spend a lot of time together.

Both have a lot of issues with their pasts, and it seems a lot of differences. Tessa has problems with her mother; Julian never had a mother. Tessa is sexually inexperienced; Julian has more experience than men twice his age. Tessa worked hard to get a formal education; Julian's education came from the streets. But both have never experienced love. Tessa longs for it, but doesn't believe it will happen for her. Julian just doesn't believe he deserves it.

This story was well-plotted, had excellent character development, was highly suspenseful, and had a hero and heroine who were scorchingly hot together! Tessa and Julian's love scenes bordered on the erotic, yet were also sweetly romantic. And Julian needed someone to love and care for him so much (and not just in a sexual way), and Tessa was perfect for that role. I was hoping all the way that Julian would realize that he did deserve that 'white picket fence' ending and would let Tessa into his heart. I was not disappointed! I can't wait for book four of this wonderful series!

Opening Line: “Coffee was Tessa Novak’s heroin.”

Oh this was just so good, and once again I have to thank everyone who kept recommending this series to me, I’m just sorry now I waited so long to start it. And Pamela Clare thanks for writing yet another amazing book, it seems that you can do no wrong, as this was a superbly written, exciting, intelligent, intriguing, suspenseful and oh so sexy story. And holy hell with the heroes; these men of yours just keep getting yummier.

Hard evidence was unputdownable from the very first pages, just excellent romantic suspense that never dumbs down the reader, actually I think that’s what I appreciate most (besides the smoking hot love scenes that is) the fact that Clare writes a real story with relatable characters that you can believe in faults and all.

Book 2 from the I-team series has an all-round darker tone than Extreme Exposure. This is probably due in part to the horrific storyline involving human trafficking. Don’t get me wrong Clare still manages to give us some lighter moments and the love scenes … but our hero here is hardened and cynical after spending years as an undercover FBI agent, paying the price emotionally for living and breathing prostitution, strip clubs and Russian mobsters. Actually come to think of it both the H/h had pretty messed up childhoods which makes it that much more poignant when they get together. This is a couple you can really cheer for and watching our big, tough undercover cop let down his defences and fall in love,* Big Sigh*.

Rather than write a synopsis (as there are already so many amazing reviews) I’ll leave you with this quote from Tessa, which explains things pretty well. Cheers

“Tessa didn’t have time for a family reunion. Her world was already in chaos. She’d witnessed a murder. She was in the middle of an investigation. Some crazy man had followed her into her home and groped her. And she might be well on her way to becoming infatuated with a man who was interested in her only for sex. The last thing she needed was her mother –or any part of Rosebud Texas –back in her hard won life.”

Can’t recommend enough.

En una palabra... ABURRIDO.

There's this love/hate relationship with me and Ms. Clare’s heroines. Sometimes, I'm green with envy because they have to deal with the most amazing guys. Sometimes, I'm mad because they can be soooo persistent and driven in their work that they forget that their safety is in danger. There are times when they cause more trouble than solve problems. But at the same time, I admire their courage and strength. Whatever the case may be, the reason why I go through these emotions is because when I open a Pamela Clare book, I get so emotionally attached to the characters that I can’t help but feel for them.

Hard Evidence was a complete play on my emotions. Ms. Clare is not only the sweetest and most down to earth author I have ever had the pleasure of interacting with but, she is also so damn smart that she intimidates me! Just take a look at any one of her books! In fact, after just reading a short chapter, you can already get the sense that she knows exactly what she is talking about in her books. It’s no wonder why her I-Teams series is so popular!

I love Ms. Clare’s attention to detail. Good scenes are made better by the little details she adds into her books. For example, when Julian teaches Tessa how to handle a gun, all those minute details she adds in about firearms not only showcases the fact that she did her research, but also further develops Julian’s character as a FBI special agent.

Romantic suspense is a genre I don’t read often. I am a romance junkie and need my daily dose of it. With romantic suspense, I initially thought that the romance would be a subplot rather than the real focus. But in Hard Evidence, there is a perfect balance. Not only was Tessa and Julian’s relationship a prominent part of this book, but it was also believable in the gradual way they learned to trust each other.

I also loved learning about Julian and his past. If I could, I would have his babies! He is officially part of my harem now and after rereading this book, I can truly say that I love Julian Darcangelo more now. This is how I picture Julian:

Hard Evidence is romantic suspense at its finest. Pamela Clare’s writing is to die for. She is able to mix hard, cold facts about the ugly side of life and intermingle it with beautiful moments of love and hope. Ms. Clare is truly a star at what she does and if you need further convincing, see all the other 5 star reviews she’s received. The proof is in the writing.

Favourite Quote:
“What is ‘Darcangelo’?”
“My last name.” He was biting back a grin.
“No! I mean what ethnicity.” She grabbed a pillow off the couch, hit him with it.
He fended off her attack with his forearm. “I’m half Italian.”
“Which half?” The words were out before Tessa could stop them.
His lips curved in a slow, sexy smile that made her heart trip. “From the waist down.”

Ever read a book and felt like you just wanted to turn around and start it all over again?!! This is definitely one of those books: I didn't JUST want to read the "good passages" again ... I wanted the whole darn experience of discovering Julian and Tessa's love affair all over again. Unfortunately, that's never possible, but maybe if I can tuck it away for a good long time and resist picking it up, it will definitely be one that I'll savor yet again!

It's always hard for me to write my 5+++ star reviews as I never feel that I can do justice to the feelings I end up having for the characters. Tess and Julian came to life for me and I didn't want to leave them or have their story end.

Breifly (as this book has been heavily reviewed along with the storyline synopsis), Tessa is a newspaper reporter who is thrown into a story by way of witnessing a murder first-hand that deeply affects her in an irretrieveable way. Julian is an undercover special agent that has been tracking a human trafficing/slaver/murderer for some time, and is on his "second time around" in trying to apprehend this "scum of the earth." Tessa and Julian's paths collide when she noticess him hovering on the fringes of the post-murder scene crowd and mistakenly believes he might even be the killer. She is eventually sucked into Julian's world by way of her relentless pursuit of why the murder had to happen, and becomes a thorn in his side in solving the case.

Julian is an extremely vividly drawn hero. Dark, romantic, powerful and yet aloof and independent. None of those qualities help him escape his own emotions when he finds himself hopelessly attracted/drawn to Tessa. Like everything Pamela Clare writes, I couldn't help falling head over heels for this couple. Yes, the couple, not just the hero. I was completely involved in their love story, and Pamela always allows the reader to be in the mind-set of both the hero and heroine. So of course, I couldn't help but be on the edge of my seat waiting patiently for them to fall in lust; acknowledge their love; be in total confusion about what they felt; and finally foresake all else to be together. And in their spare time, they had one heck of a close call catching the villain!!

Her love scenes as always are exciting, fresh, and perfectly drawn. She writes such manly yet sensitive qualities in men, and feminine yet strong, sometimes impulsive yet endearing women. Most importantly she writes in a manner that never comes off cheesy or "blousy." It's always about deep emotion.

I'm seldom a "glomer" of authors I even love, so I don't usually read series books back to back. That said, the moment I set down "Hard Evidence," I picked up "Unlawful Contact." As I initially said ... I just didn't want to leave Tessa and Julian's world! Boy am I glad I didn't! Thank you from one fan for life Pamela Clare! If you're writing it ... you'll get my money without hesitation!

Is it my imagination or do the heroes in Pamela Clare’s novels just get hotter and hotter with each subsequent book? If so, I can’t wait to get to Unlawful Contact.

Hard Evidence was a fun book to read. Interesting choice of words since the subject matter was anything but fun. Hard Evidence is the story of an investigative reporter and the world of human trafficking. Tessa Novak is a tenacious reporter, often following leads that lead her into harm’s way. She witnesses a murder and sees a dark stranger in the periphery. Tessa figures that he has to be a bad guy, but is surprised to find him working with the local authorities. Instant chemistry ensues….

Well, sort of. You see, Julian Darcangelo (love, love his name) is not the kind of man that is interested in a long term relationship. Julian is a take charge kind of guy, a man dedicated to his life’s work. Julian has been working to close down a human trafficking rink led by Alex Burien and the Russian mafia. When Tessa begins her investigation, she risked exposing Julian’s entire operation.

I liked Tessa, however I felt that she had a few moments when she lacked the basic self preservation skills. I understand that it is difficult to investigate a story when you are holed up in a safe house, but really have some basic common sense. I mean, going out to meet scary gang members to question them for a story probably isn’t the safest thing to do on your own. Luckily for Tessa, the gang members respected Julian “The Dark Angel” enough to leave her alone.

Now Julian – hmmm – I’ve seen him described as an Alpha male, and that would be a good description of him. A hunky specimen of man would probably be a good description. Well muscled, good looking, incredibly sexy, lethal – would all be good adjectives to describe Julian. I was touched when Julian took Tessa to his house to keep her safe. I laughed when he went shopping and bought out the store for her, especially a cappuccino maker for her lattes.

I enjoyed the interaction between the two main characters. The love scenes were hot and steamy – shower scene, anyone? I especially loved the scenes where Julian showed off his hotness to Tessa – once as he got out of the shower and was stepping into his jeans and the other when he and the boys were painting his house. Had to laugh at that one.

If you haven’t read this series yet, give it a try. I’m running out to find Unlawful Contact.

What an amazing, awesome, fantastic, phenomenal book. I absolutely loved it!

I have been wanting to read a Pamela Clare suspense book for some time and I'm glad I finally took the plunge.

The story was extremely good and kept me interested from page one. The ending was so heart wrenching in a happy way that I had tears of joy.

I loved both Julian and Tessa, they were both great characters. The sexual tension in the first half of the book is very high and when they finally hit the sheets SSSSSSSSSSS, it sizzles.

I have heard that Unlawful Contact is the best book in this series and I'm now wondering how it could possibly top this book. So, I guess I just have to read it next and find out for myself. Lucky Me!

Relentless, successful reporter covering the Denver police beat.

Wide-eyed, oblivious, self-absorbed innocent.

That could work if the two fall in love through the excitement of a fast-paced, action-packed plot.

But actually, both descriptions are of the same character, Tessa, an investigative reporter without a clue about vice in her city, despite supposedly being an experienced reporter assigned to the police beat. After witnessing a drive by, she stubbornly tries to find out who is responsible, petulantly insisting that she has a job to do! ...willfully screwing up undercover police work that's in progress, so that the police can't do their job and shut down the sex trafficking operation.

What an ass.

I can suspend a lot of disbelief, but I have to like the character enough to get invested in the story for that to happen.

Rather, I kept thinking Tessa was too selfish and stupid to believe.

"I'm half Italian."
"Which half?" The words were out before Tessa could stop them.
Was she flirting with him? She never flirted with men.
His lips curved in a slow, sexy smile that made her heart trip. "From the waist down."

Investigative reporter Tessa Novak has come a long way from her childhood. She works hard and believes in getting the truth to the public. When she witnesses a drive-by shooting nothing is more important to her than bringing the bad guys to light, getting justice for the poor young girl she couldn’t help. But the deeper Tessa’s investigation goes into gangs and human trafficking, the more she paints a target on her back and on sexy undercover FBI agent Julian Darcangelo, who she originally thought was the bad guy, but instead was working with the Denver police.

For the last three years Julian has been determined to put a stop to the head honcho who is responsible for most of the human trafficking and many of the killings in Denver. But pretty Tessa threatens to blow his cover and his control. But the closer they get to the villain, the hotter the passion burns between them and the more dangerous the threat against them become.

He needed her softness, her tenderness, her touch. He needed it more than he could have imagined needing anything.

I love strong and independent heroines and for the most part I really liked Tessa. Her dedication to her job and how hard she worked to make something of herself was very admirable. But she tended to disregard her own safety in order to pursue her story which made her a bit TSTL at times. I also didn’t like how she treated her mother and how she was ashamed of her because of a mistake she made (becoming pregnant as a teenager), and instead of forgiving her, of understanding she did the best she could, she basically tried to write her off and that pissed me off. Also she tended to ruin the way she stood up to Julian by falling into a puddle of swoon as soon as he kissed her and I just wanted to shake some sense into her. Honestly, have some pride woman and make it a little harder for him…..

Now Julian I loved. Yes, he could be an insensitive and arrogant ass, but I still liked him, how tough and sexy he was and how protective he was over Tessa. He didn’t have an easy childhood either, but in the end he turned himself around, putting bad guys behind bars. Also I love broken heroes, and Julian was definitely broken with his awful childhood and the darkness he sees in his job. All of it had made him hard and jaded and I loved how Tessa’s kindness and loving heart made his hard edges softer too.

I really liked the romance and this author sure knows how to write intense chemistry. I liked how both was instantly attracted to the other and I appreciated that despite that they still tried to fight their feelings and that it took a while for them to get together. Both are quite stubborn so the banter was hilarious and terrific.

Not a lot of author manages to get the balance between the suspense and romance write, but Pamela Clare is a master at writing heated romance and action-packed suspense. The villain was truly evil and the detail and interesting plot about human trafficking was chilling and perfectly done.

I really enjoyed this book and just like the first book I enjoyed myself immensely and I can’t wait to read the next book. Highly recommended to all RS fans.

I almost DNFed this book a few times. The h was completely clueless, especially for a reporter who should have known the basics of life preservation. She didn't catch on about the sex trafficking, went out of her way to talk to gang leaders in the middle of the night, wrote up reports listing the name of an undercover agent. She really was an idiot and it annoyed me.

The H was super alpha. Had a horrific childhood, no one had ever loved him, cooked for him, kissed his boo-boos until the h came along. The romance was sweet, and the overall story (besides the unintelligent h) was good

Well. Yet another author for my 'must buy' list thanks to all my buds on Goodreads.com. Pamela Clare blew me away with this tightly plotted romantic suspense novel that will get your pulse rate moving in more ways than one.

Investigative reporter Tessa has always fought for the underdog. And when she sees a young teen blown away literally before her eyes, she decides to do what she does best...investigate. Before long she's hip deep in danger and lust with undercover agent Julian. But when Julian needs her to keep a lid on what she's discovered, will she understand or be willing to compromise her journalistic integrity?

Loved, loved, loved this book. As soon as I finished it, I quickly dug out the first one from the 'to be read' mountains and devoured that one as well. Now it looks like I'll have to order the third one since neither my local B&N or Booksamillion has it in stock. If you like romantic suspense that's believable and smoking hot...you really must read Pamela Clare.

5++ Stars - It has been awhile since I read this book, but loving the talent of its author and following her recent updates, I wanted to add my thoughts.

Another great story by Pamela Clare with the perfect balance of romance and suspense. I would give this a 10 if the ratings went that high! This book captured me, held me and wouldn't let go until the last page was read. And yes, I know I'm being redundant when I say that Pamela Clare has an amazing talent that when added to her intelligence, her own real life experience, and with her intense research skills, the ending product is nothing but magnificent!

The book centers around human sex trafficking. Julian Darcangelo is an undercover FBI agent who feels he has spent his life fighting this crime. He is relentless in his pursuit and is near to ending a major human trafficking empire. Julian is a dark hero with a soul full of pain from his childhood. I absolutely, unequivocally fell in love him! Tessa Novak works with a team of Investigative reporters for Denver Independent. She witnesses the death of a teen-age girl and suspects Julian as the murderer. She is determined to find out why this young girl died, and in her research uncovers the horrors of selling humans as sex slaves. And even with her own life now in danger, she must write her articles to educate the public on this atrocity. But in her pursuit and her writing, she very easily could destroy Julian’s cover and interfere with his investigation.

And with this said it is understandable that when these two meet, there is distrust, anger, & suspicion. But …there is also this strong, mutual, gravitating, sexual pull that cannot be ignored. And when these two are near, the air tingles and the sparks fly…so hot the pages nearly leap into flames!

So many times I read Romantic Suspense where there is little romance. This book is the perfect balance. This is a sensual tale of love and redemption with the perfect amount of suspense. And while I was aware of human trafficking, this book opened my eyes to its horror. And herein lies the greatness of Ms. Clare’s talent...you are not just reading a story...you are there...completely and totally enveloped...captivated with heart palpitating, breath held, in the midst of it all.

Another definite keeper that will be read again and again.

Second read 5/28/12

Tessa worked my last nerve a bit this time through. I mean how many time did Julian have to tell her that Alexi was a sadistic SOB that took pleasure in the torturing of girls???? I mean come on WAKE UP cupcake!

But push all that aside and this is an amazing story written by a truly gifted story teller!

First Read 2/19/10-2/22/10

Pamela Clare has managed to out do herself with the second book in the I-Team series!

I can certainly see where everyone gets their love for Julian. I mean how can you not love a damaged, off the charts sexy, undercover FBI agent? LOL

I have to say that the story started out a little slow, or heck maybe I was just distracted, anyway the pace picked up and I was not disappointed in the least!

I will say it again, Ms Clare, YOU ROCK!

Pamela Clare is a prolific story teller that manages to weave a tale that will not allow you to put the book down. And can she write a steamy, tasteful and completely necessary sex scene. There is not sex in her stories for the sake of sex, but it is part of the characters and only makes their story that much better!

Tessa Novak is an I-Team reporter with Denver Independence covering the cop desk. On her way home from work, she stops at a convenience store and becomes a witness to a murder of a young girl, moments after she pleaded for help. Tessa is determined to use her position to help find and expose the girls killer, even if it runs afoul of police efforts. Julian Decarangelo is an undercover federal agent who has been working the territory that involved the murdered young girl.

It doesn't take long for Tessa and Julian to cross paths and the attraction is mutual and electric. Of course they butt heads because of their respective work roles but their relationship heats up in spite of their differences. Tessa is gutsy and clever and Julian is hard-driven and gorgeous. They both are very attractive characters who have their share of personal baggage and it was interesting to follow the progression of their relationship. There's a lot of steam here and you're going to salivate over Julian.

The case is one that is brutal and difficult to absorb. There are a lot of exciting moments that will accelerate your heart rate. There were times when Tessa's decisions were maddening and ill-advised but at least you could rationalize her behavior, though her behavior sometimes bordered on the "too stupid to live" edge. I was also able to figure out who one of the culprits was fairly early on but it didn't interfere with my enjoying the story.

I'm really liking this series and planning to continue.

Re-Read August 25, 2013:

This book is still one of my favorites. I loved reading about Tessa and Julian (Dark Angel). Julian was fast loosing his soul to the darkness of his work. Years of blending in with the horrific would of sex trafficking, his horrible childhood that ultimately led him to his career...darkness.

Tessa was his light. How she got thru his defenses. Her gentleness and strength helped guide him back to the light.

Still my favorite couple! Nicely written. I love how Pamela weaves a tale of suspense and keeps the romance right there in the forefront.

Nice job!

Original read: May 5, 2008

Another book for my "favorites" shelf. This is book #2 in the Investigative Team (I-Team) series. Neat reading from journalistic point of view and the I-team is part of the Denver newspaper. I could not put this one down! Wonderful! Julian was a wounded soul and a bad boy that "evolved" into one very nice guy. (sigh) He meets Tessa from the I-team and she becomes his sunshine. This was very intense at times and pertained to child sex slavery/trafficking, so be warned.

Be sure to read this series in order because characters from the first book play roles (that's plural) in this one and their lives are updated, too.

At the rate the paper is loosing employee's this series could go on forever...

p.s. Karen Marie Moning is mentioned in the Acknowledgment Section.

I'm searching the words to express how much I love this book...

Seriously, I deleted so many beginning of sentence I wrote for it. This book is one that is special to my heart. It would be useless to try to pretend a lot of it doesn't have to do with the hero. If I wrote what's been on my mind since I began to read again this novel, my review would be like this : I love Julian Darcangelo. I love Julian Darcangelo. I love Julian Darcangelo. I love Julian Darcangelo ;p
Okay, I'll try to not sound like a groupie for a minute or two.

In the previous book, we've been introduced to the I-Team, a group of investigative journalists for the Denver Independent journal. Kara learned the hard way how dangerous her profession can be. Now it's Tessa's turn to discover it.

Late for work, Tessa Novak must content herself with cheap coffee from a gas station. But the caffeine stop take a turn for the worse when a teenager in distress enter the shop and is shot right away by a bullet through the glass door. Tessa saw a man at the scene, someone who could be the killer. Being a witness to a crime is already risky, but it's writting an article about it that will make her a target. And it's also what catch the attention of the mysterious stranger she saw before and that she always seem to come accross everywhere she goes. With her sharp mind and tenacity, the young woman will learn that he's one of the good guys, or in other words, an undercover agent. But for Tessa, he's as irritating as he is handsome. Too cocky (can I use this word or will I be sued ;p) for her own taste.

With what he see every day in his work and a somber past, marriage and kids certainly never been in Julian Darcangelo future. "No tenderness. Nothing soft. Nothing sweet." So of course our hero will fall for Southern Belle Tessa who wears her heart on her sleeve. He know it's best to stay away from her because he could never give her the love and commitment she want, but his protective side and her determination to find justice for the killed teenager will bring them closer.

I loved this book before and loved it even more this time ! I fell in love again with Darcangelo. I didn't know it was possible to love him more. And yet, he's far from perfect. Sometimes I found him too harsh with Tessa, like when she wanted him to talk about things he didn't want. And he was a bit too rough around the edge but strangely enough, there was also this natural kindness, a touching side to him I wouldn't expect from a man who witness depravity every day. Tall, dark and oh so hot, Julian is the perfect definition of swagger. He made me swoon, he made me laugh. I even liked his inner voice. The way he fell hard for Tessa was a beautiful thing to read about. It's obvious Darcangelo (I just like saying his name :)) is my favorite Pamela Clare's hero but he's such a memorable and amazing character that he won a place in my favorite heroes of all time too.

I know some people won't like Tessa. They'll probably find her too whiny because she cried a lot but I didn't mind. I'm sure her sensitivity is what made her such a good reporter. What bothers me is that like the previous heroine, she put herself in harm's way and doesn't seem to realize how dangerous and evil the bad guys are.

The chemistry between Julian and Tessa was so hot ! How fun and exciting it was to witness the initial antagonism between them and then to see the deep affection. I find it interesting that they were both new to relationship.

"He'd never wanted a woman the way he wanted Tessa. Never. It wasn't just that she was beautiful. It wasn't just her charming combination of grit and girliness. It wasn't only her intelligence or her quiet resolve or the vulnerability that lurked behind those big blue eyes. It was all of that together- and much more. Something about her opened up something inside him."

The amazing romance did an excellent job to not overwhelming us with the disturbing aspect of the storyline about the investigation. Never thought I could give a 5 star to a book who talk about sex trafficking. I can't understand why authors choose to show the villains POV. I don't think it's necessary to know more about their depravity.

I like how Pamela Clare show us the inside of Journalism.

And this cover is so gorgeous :)

HARD EVIDENCE – the second in the I-Team series. What can I say * pauses to wipe drool from chin* - where was I? Oh, that’s right I was going to start describing how hot this book was. I couldn’t put this sucker down! I was pulled into the whirlpool that is I-Team.

So, Tessa Novak is a cop reporter for the I-Team which in lamens terms is the Denver Independent newspaper. Tessa ends up being at the wrong place at the wrong time and becomes eye witness to a murder of a young girl. While being questioned by the police, Tessa spots a man lurking in the shadows – Tessa immediately assumes that this mysterious man is the murderer.

The man however is Julian Darcangelo, and FBI agent who has been working undercover for years trying to track down a human trafficker and over all pathetic excuse for a human. When he finds out that Tessa is a reporter and could potentially expose him, he needs to steer her away from the investigation.

But Tessa isn’t your usual run of the mill reporter, and she cannot forget the murder so she refuses to stop her investigation – which ultimately leads her directly into Julian’s arms. He ends up savings Tessa life on numerous occasions when she refuses to believe that her life was truly in danger * enter huge desire to strangle heroine*. Julian takes her into his care so that he can keep an eye on her and keep her away from the baddies.

What starts as opposites attracts with huge sexual attraction turns to a lot more once the pair start spending day and night with one another. And as quoted by a very good friend of mine, Elena - There is a lot of Snooky Snooky, but when Julian and Tessa start doing their things in the sack, you will feel the steam and letters on your page melt! – Now if that isn’t enticement to read this book, then what the hell is?

The plot was well written and not once throughout the book did I feel that it slowed to a boring pace. It was suspenseful and Pamela Clare pulled it off like the master that I’ am coming to know.

If I had to have a little quibble about anything, it would be the excessive use of the - ! – in her dialogue. Over 90% of sentences ended with an exclamation mark when I don’t think it was deemed appropriate.

Cannot wait to continue this series. Many thanks go out to my close friends who hackled me into reading this series – Rhonda and Elena. Love you both.

4.5 Stars

So this is my second novel by Pamela clare. And so far Im so thrilled that i had finally got down to this series.

You must wonder why i gave this book a 4.5 star? Well,I got into the story so much that i felt sort of personal with the heroine here.

To point out the good and the bad of the story (IMO) i will say what worked for me and not.

- For starters, let me just say that Pamela`s writing is in one word incredible. She morphs from creative,to lush, to gut wrenching all at the same time. Its a fabulous trip. This book was not the exception. She writes like she is in charge of the story and knows what she is talking about (journalism being her former career, i take her word for it). Human trafficking is a very sensible issue that requires a lot of talent to write about with veracity and respect. I cared for this issue in a very realistic point of view, even thought it was a romance novel i was reading. Well done there!

-The plot was so full of surprises.. Although that is the purpose of this genre, i found myself questioning how this mess was going to play out (including the romantic side of it) which is not necessarily bad, because the author gave time for its characters to muddle around and face their demons in their own time. The journalistic front as well as FBI`s investigative/interrogative techniques were really well played out. the story line was as much focus for me as the romance factor.

- Characterization. Let me just say that I LOVED Julian.. from his name to his dark, smoldering ways.. So there might be a little discrepancy between readers because of Julian`s seemingly rudeness and lack of care towards emotional connection. You know what tho?, I thought it was a great character! because it fit the story, his background, his actions, and the very reason as how he endured his job. He was broken, resentful ,but most of all he was neglected. What kind of person would not be weary, scared and feeling lacking when confronted with the feelings he was developing for Tessa?. His coping mechanisms were abruptness and dejection. I can perfectly see how can someone be like that with the kind of life he endured. I got a little upset at his lack of tactfulness, but heck he didnt know better.! it doesnt justify a persons actions, but it gives us insight before passing judgement. And that was precisely why i love characters such as him;with so many layers to peel away. He came around slowly.. the only possible way to heal such deep scars. His character bode well with the dark plot.

Now, lets talk about our dear Tessa "bless her heart" ^_^. She was a fine, hard working girl, with the softness and tenure that shaped around Julian`s guarded heart. they complemented each other. (I came to that conclusion upon finishing the book) no way in hell i knew how they were going to work it out... Because Tessa was so flaky!! Hence bringing my very reason to rate the book 4.5. There is nothing wrong with being flaky upon making decisions,or going into the unknown.. its ok to vacillate when it comes to know what is what we really want from our lives. but Tessa here, was just back and forth, coming from a stupidity comma to the sharp journalist.idealism in between trances. I hope you get my meaning. Like, how is possible for someone whose childhood and early adulthood was spent in the wrong side of the tracks, not have some ingrained instincts of self preservation???(exclamation pt) !!!!!!!.She got on my nerves with the idyllic journalistic motto of "getting to bottom of the issue and bring it to the public light"... It takes more than conviction to do that! she put herself in such ridiculous endangering situations, where i just kept muttering between clenching teeth " you do not outsmart common sense, ever!" Ohh but she did.. and it was Julian who rightly so, had more than nice words for her. I dont think her character her character was cohesive with the story. At least not what i would like a fine journalist to be.I know she took this case personal but even still she forgot the essential objectiveness someone in her career should have. dont get me wrong, her sheer stupidity to feel super woman really spiked up the thrill factor!.she had some really good moments of cleverness towards the end, when some sense was broken to her.So.. i let it go! LOL no more grilling for you.

But DO NOT let my little rant here keep you away from this book, because besides that mishap.. i think everything fell into place quite nicely.

Now,talk about steam factor!!** drums ready** I say without qualms Pamela is brilliant at this !!!! God, those were good!. She is brutally honest, descriptive and holds nothing back without being slutty. I dont think im a perv .. but. boy, was i lusting like a green kid!! LOL i really hope she doesnt change that into the later installments.

and last but not least of course, are the Epilogues. there are many times where i feel like there were aspects of the story and or relationship that feel unresolved, even with an epilogue. Not in this case. Pamela is so thorough, making epilogues 5to 6 pages long, they simply left me more than satisfied.

what can i say? only when i like a book this much,it gets me talking for this long.. :p

great work Pamela!
