SHORT BUT SWEET AND ROMANTIC

I have been back and forth with this series - loving some of the books and nothing liking others at all. I feel like the series has hit its stride in the last couple of books, and while this one didn't thrill me quite as much as the one before, Dawn with a Duke, it still made me happy.

👍 What I Liked 👍

Angelica: This was definitely a character driven romance, and therefore it's only fitting that I start off with the two main characters. Angelica was driven, determined and loyal. I loved how much she cared about not only proving herself but also her family. And the fact that she was a Black woman was so amazing - very few Historical Romances feature coloured main characters. So this was a real treat!

Jonathan: What can I say about Jonathan? Honestly, you have to experience him, because I don't think you've ever read a character quite like him before. I certainly hadn't. He was so adorable with his constant chatter and hunger for adventure. Yet, there was also a much deeper level to him and I loved witnessing that unravel.

Sweet: Honestly, this was just sweet, easy and entertaining. It's not a great work of art and it won't take you long to get through it, because there's not all that much to the plot. But it is a great way to just get away from everyday life.

Honestly, Erica Ridley does historical romance so well. I love dipping into her books when I get the chance!

The 12 Dukes of Christmas is one that I've been working my way through slowly but surely. When another one popped up on NetGalley, I jumped at it! Who doesn't love a little historical romp? Well, obviously some readers. But I like them!

Jonathan MacLean is one handsome Scot and, my oh my, does this book show it! He's a charming man ready to woo out leading lady. Or is he? Temptation is gonna get this man, I tell ya! He meets Angela, a jeweller, and suddenly our story takes off.

This romance is hot and sweet and everything I want in this series. It met my expectations and exceeded them. I was whisked away, swooned over the couple, and fell in love hard. This series gets me every time.

Four out of five stars.

Thank you to WebMotion and NetGalley for sending me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

If I ever entertain going back in time, I want to go back to Erica Ridley’s Cressmouth where there are women who stand against the norm, make their own lives and deal with the consequences, if any! In this warm and heartfelt tale, Angelica, a gifted jeweler who bravely signed a contract that would control her life for seven years, she has made a name for herself, in spite of her race and the fact she is a woman. All was going well until Jonathan MacLean steps into her shop and her life, churning emotions she never dreamed of having time for.

Quirky, clownish, yet clearly intelligent, Jonathan is like a breath of fresh air coming on with hurricane force winds. What has driven this man to live the life of a good-hearted nomad? What dark secrets is he hiding?

Has love come to Cressmouth again when one least expects it? How can a woman firmly rooted in her livelihood and passion tame a footloose wanderer? How does the dashing wanderer bring a bit of adventure into the serious business woman’s life?

ONE NIGHT WITH A DUKE could be one of Erica Ridley’s best romances yet! Light-hearted at times, heart-melting at others, another fun read in the town where the magic of love abounds!

I read all of Erica Ridley's books, and I always enjoy them, even if they don't often wow me. One Night with a Duke was another pleasant historical holiday read from Erica Ridley with some really great features that will stand out to readers.

I adored the fact that we got a Black female MC in a historical romance. I read a lot of historical romance, and to find diversity there, especially in European romances, is exceedingly rare. POC existed, of course, during that time period in Europe, and they deserve to be included in historical romance. I was so, so pleased to see the cover of this book, and I couldn't wait to get started.

The story is sweet and has a ton of Christmas spirit, just like I was expecting from this series. I think it's a bit better if you've read Dawn with a Duke prior to reading this one, since the stories are intertwined, but it isn't necessary.

I enjoyed the female MC, Angelica, a ton. She is a strong, talented jeweler who has worked hard her entire life to prove herself. I really enjoyed her, even though I thought some of the details of her life and past were slightly underdeveloped (not that surprising for a novella).

The male MC, Jonathan, on the other hand wasn't quite my cup of tea. He seemed a bit... manic, and he came across as a kind of a lot. I thought his boisterous personality was overwhelming, and I found him to be edging towards annoying rather than charming. I also didn't love his instalove with Angelica. I prefer my romances to be more slow burn in general, though I know that's harder for a novella. His backstory was interesting as it evolved, but I also think it could have used more fleshing out.

One Night with a Duke is a sweet, easy to read romance that will please Erica Ridley fans. I loved the diversity, and I hope Erica Ridley continues to use more non-white characters in her romances.

Nice, sweet and cozy! Another "duke", another happily ever after.

In Cressmonth it's Christmas all year around, not only because it's really all year around Christmas but because they have an excellent percentage of strong, beautiful, self-sufficient and self-made women. I bet that is highly above England's percentage!! 😉

Jonathan has been attempting to outrun his past for quite a few years. He travels from town to town, never getting rooted or making friends. He also hates Christmas, and is trapped in a town known for exactly when a blizzard hits. Here he meets a woman that captivates him from the start.

Angelica is a black woman fighting her own way to make her dreams come true. She has the skills of being a master jewelry maker, now she just needs to fully own her shop and get her name across England.

Give this book a try if you're in the mood for:
A Christmas romance – seriously the perfect book to enjoy on a winter evening, wrapped up with a cozy blanket and a mug of hot cocoa.
Working woman – Angelica is a jewelry designer working on owning her own shop
Regency time period – this book takes place in a small town in 1814
A diverse cast – heroine is black
Highlander hero – not a huge aspect of the book, but the hero is from Scotland and has a scottish burr
No villain or mystery – small background mystery related to the hero's actions but this book is all about the romance
Novella length
Low steam – there are 2 kisses and zero scenes other than that

I am surprised at how much I enjoyed this book with it being sweet (zero sex scenes. Not even closed door. ZERO). I think with moderate steam this book would have been a favorite. I just totally fell into this world Ridley created. Utterly charmed by this fun, welcoming little mountain town village that Jonathan has been stranded in. I found both main characters unique and a breath of fresh air compared to everything else I've read recently.

Jonathan is more of a beta hero. He's so funny, and charming, and so so sweet. Filled with stories and always doing outrageously generous things to create more, I found him a delight. Angelica is definitely more straight backed. She's had to work hard for what she has, and she's not done yet. Jonathan really helps her have some fun and melts her heart.

I wasn't in love with a little bit at the end, but it was redeemed with being addressed as both characters making mistakes. It works out nicely and I'm happy to have read it. I really liked Ridley's writing and plan on trying more from her. This was my first by her.

I like the cover, as I feel like it actually matches the characters described, even the heroine's dress. I DON'T like the title and find it extremely deceiving hahaha.

One Night with a Duke is a sweet, sweet historical romance between a bah humbug Scot salesman and a budding jeweler.

We are back, once again in the town of Cressmouth where it's Christmas all year long. Mr. Jonathan MacLean is a happy-go-lucky philanthropist/entrepreneur that is always on the go. He loves adventure and is a constant delight wherever he goes. His motto is never to go to the same place twice. On his way to meet with the Duke and hopefully his newest business investor he suddenly gets trapped in his version of holiday hell. He's always hated to Christmas holiday and has taken measures to avoid it every year. But as he makes the best out of a bad situation he finds a woman and her holiday town might just be the best adventure he's ever discovered.

Angelica Parker has worked hard to become the best jeweler around. She has a contract with the town that she must stay in Cressmouth for 7 years. If she stays for the entirety of the contract, she will have her own shop and all the profits at the end. Angelica recognizes the unique position she is in. As a black woman and business owner, she is no stranger to work and sacrifice but knows just how lucky and special her position is in Cressmouth. She has had to sacrifice any time off and seeing her precious family back in London for the opportunity of a lifetime. As she is nearing the end of her contract, she has no time for dashing Scottish men with intriguing stories, strong hands, and the ability to see her just as she is... well, maybe just a little time.

Angelica and Jonathan have such a cute and sweet story. I love the abolition/abolitionist angle of the story and how Angelica came to have her own jewelry store. Jonathan's bah! humbug! Scrooge attitude is always a fun troupe for me. He was such an outgoing character but to have that dichotomy of being a grump about Christmas as well as why he came to be that way gave his character some intrigue.

The romance/relationship discovery was the strong main focus of this story and it was not sweet. There was no deflowering of virgin's or my one chance sort of thing happening here. Just a boy falling hopelessly for a girl and bungling asking for her hand a few times.

For a cute and sweet holiday romance definitely try One Night with a Duke. Erica Ridley is always the answer for a sweet historical romance craving.

Though all the novellas in this series stand pretty well alone, I think this one is best read in conjunction with Dawn with a Duke, since it follows Jonathan McLean, the other half of the partnership behind the Fit for a Duke clothing enterprise. Arriving in Cressmouth, Jonathan is annoyed to be stranded for a few days awaiting his partner’s arrival. Exploring the town, he meets jeweller Angelica Parker, and finds himself enchanted.

I loved the fact that Angelica was a Black woman running her own business, and a skilled one at that, in the Regency era. Nor does the author shy away from pointing out that Black people were experiencing racism and discrimination at the time in England, although we don’t really see Angelica experience it directly. Jonathan is a gadfly, a man who never returns to the same town twice, but in Cressmouth he starts to realise maybe there can be something good about living in a place where everyone knows your name.

I did really enjoy this, but I think it was just too short and all wrapped up too neatly and rapidly. It was a story that justified a full book rather than a novella, because both Angelica and Jonathan had a lot of story to tell and I’m not sure it was really done justice here; it felt too rushed.

And as a hobby jeweller, I was wincing at the timeframes Angelica was apparently working in, without so much as an apprentice to help her out. You couldn’t do that today, using modern equipment, without some help. The author had the right tools and terminology, but Angelica should have had a shop assistant to handle sales and at least one apprentice to do the grunt work of cleaning and polishing anyway, with the rate of production she was apparently keeping up. Of course, said assistant and apprentice would have been thoroughly in the way of the romance, so I understand the artistic licence being taken… but perhaps just a few less pieces being made would have made it more believable to me, at least.

I’m not going to knock off a star for the jewellery thing because most people wouldn’t have a clue that it was even an issue, but I am going to take one off because I think the story was simply too rushed. It’s an enjoyable read but too much was skimmed over.

I rate 4.5 I'm taking off .5 because I felt they fell in love a bit too fast.

So loved this. Mixed couple romance. Scottish male and black woman find love in Cressmouth. Jonathan's backstory is heartbreaking. Angelica is a tenaciously bold woman who struck out on her own to make a name for herself as has Jonathon. Both are seeking to prove their worth in the world for different reasons.

I liked that Erica gives resources for more study of blacks in Europe during that period. A jeweler and a traveling salesman\businessman. I found it a bit strange that there wasn't any pushback from Angelica's family or the townspeople about the mixed race relationship.

Will this Christmas heal his lost little boy’s heart ...

Of all the 10 stories I have read so far, I wonder if this one does not top all the others, even if I just loved many of them like the previous one, which if the other side of the coin, I drank this story in no time.
At first sight, Jonathan might appears as fickle, going from one place to another, strutting his wealth and bragging his many stories, when he is a man haunted by his past.
While presenting himself as a butterfly going from one flower to the next, always looking for fresher pastures. In his peculiar way, he helps others to better themselves, he recognizes overlooked talents and he does what nobody has done for him, he believes in them and is the spark than ignites what was burgeoning.
Angelica sacrificed a part of her freedom to follow her dream, after seven years, she is finally close to her goal, to have her own jewelry. And now she is within an inch of making it real, the seducing tramp won’t wreck her ambitions by making her long for something else.
Jonathan is like a wisp, where he goes, joy follows. He has a way to make people at ease. But for once, he discovers what it is to be appreciated and awaited for one’s self, to get to know others outside the classic passing greetings, to share happy memories...
When Angelica comes to term with her own issues, because while Jonathan is easy to listen, does she hear to her heart’s contents too.
A beautiful tale of a man who does magic with others’ gifts but must learn to receive too and the woman who might partake his life if he is willing to put some roots with her.

Charming adventurer Jonathan and jeweller Angelica meet in Angelica's shop. Jonathan is enamoured by the beautiful jewellery and the artisan behind the counter. Both seem to be working toward opposite goals, philanthropist Jonathan wants to leave the village as soon as the snow storm abates, Angelica is working towards her own shop and recognition as a black female artist. Neither has love on their to-do lists. But for Jonathan Angelica and the little village of Cressmouth offer something he thought he could never have - a home. For Angelica the distracting Jonathan might just be what she needed - something to take her mind off her work and by that spark her creativity.

A historical romcom with lovable characters, a charming setting, and a HEA you're rooting for from the start.

Welcome back to Cressmouth! I seriously need to find this place and go! Who knows what I might find!

Jonathan MacLean did not sit around and dream about adventure, no he lived it! He tried never to travel to the same place twice, but keep going from town to town. But now he had a meeting to attend in Cressmouth, but he had to explore first. Imagine, the first shop he went into, a jewelry shop.. and there she was!

This was the most unusual, wonderful story I have to say. Jonathan was constantly talking, asking questions, staying busy. Angelica had worked hard so long to prove herself with her jewelry design and shop but had not felt taken seriously until Jonathan. These two understood each other on some level that was amazing.

But as the snow falls and he gets stuck in town, a lot is going to happen that is both unexpected but fated it seems!
Really enjoyed this and the authors notes and historical facts is so enlightening!!

This was a fluffy romance about two people from different ways of life falling in love during the holidays (maybe even, in spite of the holidays). I truly did enjoy reading this story. The setting was really cute - it had a sort of Christmas village whimsicality to it that I think helped set the tone. Also, the heroine Angelica is a black jeweler who has a passion for her work and doesn't diminish her talents for anyone.

Though lacking in tension, I felt the characters were developed just enough for me to be invested in their romance. Plus, they were so sweet together. Perfect for the holidays!

One Night with a Duke
Book 10 in the 12 Dukes of Christmas Series
Rating; 3 stars
Thank you to the author/publisher for the ARC given through NetGalley for review. All opinions are my own.

One Night with a Duke is part of an ongoing series that revolves the characters that live in a small village called Cressmouth.
In book 10, which can be read as a standalone, we meet Jonathan and Angelica. I really liked them. I loved Angelica's profession. She had her own jewelry business. A business that she was running on her own. It cost her to be distant from her family but she needed to prove to them and herself that she could do it on her own. When in walks Jonathan one day and changes her life. They had great chemistry that evolved into a friendship at first. Jonathan liked to help people. He was always very giving. I loved how sweet he was to her and always trying to take care of her. Especially when she forgot to eat because she was busy. Also, we learn of the reason of why he doesn't celebrate Christmas. So when he's been always the one to give and be a wanderer, it is Angelica that shows him that life can be a little different when we decide to stay in place.
Their friendship slowly evolved to something that they both didn't expect. It took them by surprise because to pursue those feelings meant that decisions had to be made that would change their lives. Luckily for them it changed for the better.

This is the 10th In the Dukes of Christmas series set in Cressmouth (Christmas) in northern England close to the Scottish border. The h is Angelica Parker a young Black woman a talented Jeweller. Mr. Marlowe offered her a free room at Marlowe Castle and a free shop if she stayed and worked in Cressmouth for seven years. This would be her seventh year and the shop would finally be hers. The H is MacLean, Calvin business partner in the venture Fit for a Duke. MacLean is a rolling stone travelling one town to the next never staying anywhere longer than a week.

Christmasisms: Jonathan doesn’t like Christmas 🎄 He is like the “Grinch”.
Angelica name is like Angel
Angelica is making 10 Gold Holly leaves with berries Christmas ornaments for a special tree at the Castle. These ornaments will be advertised in the Cressmouth Gazette. This will make her famous.

Quotes: “Angelica faced away from the counter and touched her fingers to her mouth. Mr. MacLean had kissed each of her ten fingers, one by one, before attending to her mouth just as thoroughly.
She shouldn’t have let him do it.
She shouldn’t have let him stop.”

A design for Fir for a Duke called “ The Dukes Secret”.

““A lover’s locket.” They were often beautiful gold capsules with a secret frame inside, bearing a tiny portrait of a loved one’s eye. The locket could be worn as a brooch, or hung from a necklace next to one’s heart.”

“Without further ado,” Noelle announced, “we present... holly that lasts forever!”
The sound of flutes and clarinets filled the ballroom as ten lads marched through the open doors in pairs, playing a rousing rendition of “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”
On the dais, they exchanged their instruments for Angelica’s bejeweled gold creations. They displayed the glittering red-berried adornments to the crowd, to oohs and aahs.”

“And soon, he must take his leave from Angelica.
His chest seized at the thought. Jonathan flung out a hand to the wall for balance. Never see her again. Never come back, because every moment here was a moment he wasn’t out there spreading the word.
Never see each other again.
The idea was insupportable. Unfathomable. He couldn’t breathe at the sudden sense of loss. He loved her too much to—
God help him. Of all the untimely, foolish complications, Jonathan had fallen in love.”

““I’m sorry I let you down,” he said, before she could say the same. “I’ve been so used to my life being a certain way that I failed to envision what a new way would look like. What it should look like.” He took a deep breath. “I’ll stop.”
She frowned. “Stop what?”
“Everything. I’ll stop running, I’ll stop traveling, I’ll stop...” He gestured helplessly. “I’ll stop being afraid. Or at least, I won’t let fear stop me. I love you, Angelica. No place would ever be home without you in it.”
She took a breath. Compromise. Love was worth it. “You adore travel just as much as I adore…

“Long before slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire in 1833, free Black people lived a full range of lives, from paid servants to working class to fame and fortune. Musicians, sailors, preachers, businessmen, inventors, political activists. Black princes and dignitaries from African nations were celebrated in Polite Society.”

Jonathan MacLean is on his way to Cressmouth to meet with the Duke of Nottingvale about investing in a business venture. Jonathan is a bit of a nomad, traveling around the country, but never staying anywhere long enough to lay down roots and he has a steadfast rule – he never visits the same place twice. He arrives to learn that the snow will certainly keep him in town longer than expected and will delay the arrival of the Duke and his business partner Calvin. Unable to just wait around for the snow to stop, he decides to venture out and meet the people of Cressmouth. He enters the jeweler’s shop and feels like he has been struck by lightning – the jeweler is the most stunning woman he has ever seen!

Angelica Parker is the jeweler in town, she came to Cressmouth seven years ago to make a name for herself. She was invited to set up shop by Mr. Marlowe and he made her an outrageous offer – he would provide her with rooms in the castle and a shop at no charge, but she must stay in Cressmouth for seven years – no exceptions – if she leaves, even for a day, the contract is void and she will owe an obscene amount of money, however, if she fulfills the contract, everything is hers, free and clear – this Christmas will be her seventh year and she is looking forward to travel – but she plans to stay in Cressmouth. Her family comes each year to visit her, but they don’t understand why Angelica agreed to the contract – they have a successful shop in London and think she should have married and stayed with them. Angelica longs to be acknowledged for her talent and knows that if she stayed in London – that would never happen. She is happy in Cressmouth, but still hasn’t achieved the recognition she dreams of. She has no idea how much her live will change when a handsome young man comes into her shop!

What a sweet novella this was! It is well written and chocked full of interesting historical facts regarding slavery in Regency-era Britain. Jonathan and Angelica are very complex characters and I am impressed by how well Ms. Ridley was able to flesh them out considering this is a novella. The story has a lot of emotion, some laughs, warmish love scenes, delightful secondary characters, compromise and a sweet HEA, complete with an epilogue. This book is the tenth book in the series, but it can easily be read as a standalone title with no problems.

This is the tenth book in this fun entertaining series. I didn't like Jonathan at all at the beginning & his bon homie annoyed me. However the more I read the more his backstory was revealed the more I grew to like him. I did love how generous he was not only by showering people with money ie his driver but he also gave his time to help. Angelica was lovely & I did love how their relationship developed. Also how from their very meeting he bolstered her confidence, in fact he bolstered everyone's confidence. Another feel good read which I found hard to put down
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Well-traveled Scotsman Jonathan MacLean makes a point of never visiting the same town twice. He’s always seeking adventure and full of positivity as he searches for talented individuals in which to invest, whilst also running away from his loneliness and a painful past. When he’s trapped in a small mountain town during a snowstorm, he befriends the local jeweler, a beautiful woman who has him thinking of home and permanency. But Jonathan’s longing has been buried for a long time and his partners in his newest business venture depend on him resuming his travels once the snow clears.

Angelica Parker had fought hard for recognition not just as a jeweler but as an artist and successful businesswoman. Her contract has kept her rooted in Cressmouth for seven years but it’s almost up now and her latest commission stands to finally get her name out there and bring the notoriety she craves. This close to her goal, she has no time for distractions, especially handsome, chatty gentlemen with no plans to stay.

This was a sweet, light-hearted story of acceptance and belonging. Angelica and Jonathan were adorable together and I loved their ability to reevaluate their respective stances and seek a compromise. Though this was lacking in steam, it was a charming story and is beginning to get me into the Christmas spirit a bit early.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I loved One Night with a Duke! I think it’s amazing to have a Black heroine in a regency romance, and I loved the references to the Black community in 19th century England, subtle but eye-opening, and very informative. I loved both main characters so much! Angelica for her determination, her dedication to her craft, and her love for her big, boisterous family, and Jonathon for his absurd humor, his resolve to always look on the bright side of life, his winning ways, and the way he helps others achieve their dreams. Both characters have both joy and pain in their lives/memories, and I loved how they learn to see each other’s truth and help each other grow. I also loved how delicate and nuanced the writing is, yet it still manages to convey the depth of both Jonathan’s and Angelica’s feelings, which is just wonderful. So many emotions and fascinating historical facts hide between the light banter and elegant descriptions! I liked Luther a great deal as well; his relationship with Angelica is not without its tensions, but we are never in doubt about the love between the siblings. Their relationship struck me as very authentic and added an extra heartwarming layer to this story.

Jonathan MacLean finds himself stuck in the Christmas town of Cressmouth because of a snow storm. It is a novel experience for him, since he only spends enough time in one place to conclude his business there, and take in some of the sights the area has to offer before moving on to the next place. He is a charming, jovial man, making friends wherever he goes, but he never gets close to anyone, and he doesn’t give anybody else the chance to get close to him either. In Cressmouth, the industrious Miss Angelica Parker makes him pause, and for the first time, he has the desire to stay for a bit longer.

Angelica only wants to make a name for herself as a jeweler, away from the shadow of her family’s business. She loves her town, and her friends, and her shop. And then Jonathan showed her that she can make so much more of her business, something that she had only dreamed about before.

In many respects Jonathan and Angelica are opposites, and they look at life in very different ways. But Angelica’s quiet strength drew Jonathan in, and his friendly, non-judgemental, open nature was what made Angelica take a second look.

It was a quick, fun read, with plenty of romantic moments and character development, and a great addition to the entire series. You don’t have to read them in order to still enjoy each installment.

Thank you to WebMotion and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

One Night with a Duke is the 10th book in the 12 Dukes of Christmas series by Erica Ridley. It can easily be read as a stand-alone but having read the other books in the series I can recommend that you read the others purely because they are so wonderful. As wonderful as this one is!

Jonathan MacLean is a Scot who is always on the move. He has travelled to Cressmouth AKA Christmas to meet with his partner, Calvin, whose story was in the book before this. Calvin is a men's fashion designer and Jonathan is the artist who provides the artwork for the catalogue of clothing that they want to sell. He loves being on the move and looks forward to getting the Duke of Nottingvale to agree to put his name to the clothing venture. With funding and his endorsement catalogues can be printed and Jonathan will travel the country distributing them and hopefully signing up new customers.

Angelica Parker has always had to fight against the odds. She is black, she is a woman and she strives to be a successful jeweller with her own shop. She lives in Cressmouth and has done for the last 7 years. Well, just a few days short of 7 years. A benefactor gave her premises to set up shop on the proviso that she never leave the town, not even for a day until that 7 years expired. After that, the shop would become hers and she could travel again to visit family who has been hurt by not understanding how important it has been to her to set up her business. Her brother is one of those family members who can't see why she wouldn't want to work for him in the family jewellery business that their father left to him in London. With the contract nearly up she looks forward to her freedom but still intends to make her living in Cressmouth in her own lovely shop.

Jonathan arrives at Cressmouth before Calvin and with the weather not being the best he decides to not just hang around outside, but to introduce himself to the people of the town. That included him entering Angelica's shop. To say that they felt an instant attraction to each other would be an understatement. It's an attraction that they would see develop over the days that Jonathan spends there. Angelica helps him to enjoy Christmas and he helps her enjoy that somebody has confidence in her and builds her up rather than tries to knock her down. They get on so well together and even share a passionate kiss or two. But can there be any future for them when Jonathan won't give up travelling, and Angelica is determined to live in Cressmouth?

This book really put me into a festive mood despite it only being October and with the misery of Covid 19 being present. I love Cressmouth and its people, I would live there if there was such a place! Jonathan and Angelica are such wonderful characters and reading their backstories was really interesting. I can't fault this story at all and definitely recommend it.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

After reading the previous installment in the series, I was excited for One Night with a Duke, with the hero being introduced in that book. As a result, while I felt the previous book could serve as a good stand-alone/starting point, I do feel this one is best read after reading that one.

Jonathan is an interesting hero, and having seen him as a secondary character in the previous book as Calvin’s business partner, it’s great to see him get his own story and development, particularly as he spends much of the narrative being so work-centric, until he meets Angelica and she has the potential to offer him something more.

I really liked Angelica’s character as a successful Black businesswoman in Regency London, while we never see her experience it directly, I like that Ridley did not shy away from depicting it, and making her character well-rounded. There are so many non-ownvoices portrayals of Black people (and other POC) in fiction that have been done wrong, but Ridley clearly had compassion for the Black people, as well as an awareness of the true extent of their lives in during the Regency era, which varied wildly from servant to aristocrat and everything in between.

This is another heartwarming entry in Erica Ridley’s 12 Dukes, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. If you love Regency romance but haven’t read Erica Ridley, this series is a great place to start: short, sweet, and full of holiday cheer!

Another warm and heartfelt romance in Cressmouth. Although this can be read as a standalone, it ties in with 'Dawn with a Duke" to reflect the other side of the partnership in the creation of "Fit for a Duke".

Jonathan is Calvin's partner in creating and promoting their new venture of making fashionable clothes at an affordable cost. He doesn't setlle in one place. That way he doesn't have to endure the bad memories of his past.

Angelica is the jeweler in Cressmouth. She has to honour a contract which leaves her with little to no time for any leisure. When Jonathan walks into her shop, everything changes. Can he give up his wandering ways and settle for what he could call home?

Jonathan has this incredible personality. He is amusing and adorable even if he carries the unpleasant baggage from his past. Angelica is sweet. She can be herself in Cressmouth and not being judged for being black. Their friendship turns into a beautiful love story. I love the writing style, the pace, the portrayal and the romance. A great addition to this series.

Cressmont Village - December 1814

Mr. Jonathan MacLean has arrived in Cressmont to meet with the Duke of Nottingvale at Marlowe Castle. His partner, Calvin, is to meet him here for the meeting. Calvin is a talented tailor and has created an affordable line of men’s clothes called Fit for a Duke. Jonathan backs him with the money and Calvin sews the clothes.

Jonathan is impressed by the pretty village and all of the snow so he decides to take a walk around the town. He enters a shop and is struck by the pretty black woman working in there. Her name is Miss Angelica Parker. She is a jeweler and he is impressed by the nice pieces she has created. He chats with her saying he will buy everything, but she thinks he is being silly. A woman from the town comes in saying that this year a tree will be brought inside the Castle and they need some extravagant decorations for it. Therefore, she needs Angelica to make some large ornaments.

Jonathan soon learns that a large snowstorm has hit the surrounding area which means people invited to the Duke’s Yuletide Party will not be able to arrive for some days yet so the party will be held when they get there.

Usually, I like this author’s books but this one left me shaking my head. Jonathan comes across as a rich guy who throws his money around in what appears to be a way to make friends. He walks into a jewelry store and immediately falls in love. The town has a castle that gives out free food to everyone. There are just so many things here that made me wonder if this is supposed to be a fantasy story. Sorry. I just did not care for the plot.

One Night with a Duke by Erica Ridley
12 Dukes of Christmas #

He’s a traveling man
A moss-free rolling stone
No home of his own
A friend to all
So many stories to tell
But all alone

She’s an incomparable jeweler
Locked in place
A slave to her dreams
In days all will be hers
Her dreams fulfilled
But all alone

Jonathan and Angelica should not have anything in common. They are as different as black and white with one having strong family ties and the other no roots at all. Both are actually searching for recognition or perhaps validation of the worth that they seem to have been missing. A snowstorm locks them in Cressmouth and circumstances allow them to get to know and begin to care for one another. Whether or not they will find a HEA is what this story is all about.

What I liked:
* Returning to Cressmouth where Christmas is a year-round happening
* Jonathan: a bit lost but a genuinely caring and giving man. He did come across as a bit naïve at times but I liked him.
* Angelica: missing her family but a woman with a vision and willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it. She puts work before anything. I liked her.
* The writing, story, and series
* The slow growth the two made as the story progressed
* Angelica’s family
* The way this story seamlessly carried on from the previous book
* Wondering who the next two books will be about as the series nears completion

What I did not like:
* Being reminded of the divide between classes during the period of the story
* The damage done to Jonathan by his parents
* Having to wait for the next book in the series

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely

Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I liked the story, though I got a bit miffed in the way the author kept reminding me throughout the narrative that the heroine was Black. Angelica is a talented jeweller and took the opportunity to have her own shop in Cressmouth, the Christmas Village that is the location for this series of books. To ensure she didn't have to pay a large mortgage she had to commit to 7 years toil (which as the story was making references to the iniquites of the slave trade, I couldn't help but notice the link the author was making with semi-voluntary indentureship). Our hero is a trust fund kid, who resents the money his father has provided him with in lieu of a relationship (a bit like a remittance man). He travels around the country, giving said money away, whilst acting as an entrepenuer to struggling artists. The previous book was about Jonathan's partner and their plan to create a range of ready to wear clothes. Both of them are lonely in their own way, Angelica because she misses her family and Jonathan because his continual travelling helps to cover the shallow relationships he finds on the way. I thought the passion was a bit missing in this book but then there was a lot of detail on culture, psychology and transformation.
