Simply honest

Highly recommend this book to anyone looking to build a better relationship with themselves. The book was written very simply with extremely profound messages. The stories are all so heartfelt and inspiring, had me bawling my eyes out whilst at the same time filling me up with hope and joy. An absolute page turner, could not put it down! I have read many books about self love and compassion, but this book gave a completely different perspective which was so refreshing and so real. No jargon. No facade. Just simply honest. And that's what makes it so powerful. For a long time I have been working on loving myself and hoping that sooner or later I will feel whole again. Constantly chasing the next thing to do to get me towards the best version of myself, but growing more and more frustrated that I just wasnt becoming who I wanted to be. Hannah put it so simply, "instead of fighting against the current of life, swim with it". And by letting go, you can "finally be at peace with your reflection; you can finally see that your beauty exists in what you believe makes you flawed." Thank you Hannah for helping me realise that "self-love is not attained; it's awakened."

UPDATE: I interviewed Hannah Blum for this blog in 2018. I’m delighted to say her new book The Truth about Broken: the Unfixed Version of Self-Love is for sale on Amazon. A combination of memoir and the quotes and poetry that went viral on her Instagram account, Blum’s writing is raw and beautiful. She does not flinch when describing the pain and the beauty of life, of her experience with bipolar disorder 2. Her short essays are insightful and wise portraying a young woman who is light years ahead of her generation yet at the same time so in touch with them. Blum is a social media expert and is always engaging on new platforms to help spread the word about mental health and “slay stigma” as she calls it.

On the dark days she screamed.
On her bright days, she laughed.
There was no in between,
but every day she felt

This line is an example of her writing style. Blum is a Creative Director in Los Angeles, California. You can purchase her new book at http://halfway2hannah.com.

A truth-telling story of a woman’s journey with her mental health struggles and how she navigated through it with the support of those around her.

Heartbreaking at times, it touched my heart to see her continue to fight and support those around her. She poignantly writes at the end, “It’s okay to be different. It’s okay to feel broken. It’s okay to feel too much in a world that feels too little.”

I enjoyed the structure of this book. It took an artist approach by incorporating poems in between the chapter. It was written in a style that felt as if the reader is having a conversation with Author Hanna Blum. This books brings to light the reality of those with mental health and illness, dismembering stereotypes associated with mental facility and the patients. Beautiful read, personally I had to take mental breathers but was so drawn I couldn't put the book down. Hannah was able to write about the humanity and pain the people she encounter and their perspectives of the world they have come to know and how it shaped their reality.
