The darkness holds more than just secrets...

Marked for death, Sabine escaped from her home more than ten years ago.

But the Wild Hunt will never give up.

It should have been easy to stay hidden. All Sabine had to do was keep her head down, avoid telling anyone about her past, and above all else -- not let her glamour drop.

Even the best-laid plans eventually fall apart.

When a charismatic stranger arrives in the city, Sabine finds herself unwittingly drawn to him and the power she can sense hidden within him. Keeping her distance is nearly impossible, especially after a life debt is called due and she’s tasked into helping steal a rare artifact.

Sabine is the only one who can break the magical barriers protecting the item, but that means revealing the truth about her identity and exposing her darkest secrets.

Unfortunately, the Fae aren’t the only ones hunting her.

And the most dangerous monsters aren’t always confined to the dark.

To Kill a Fae by Jamie A Waters
The Dragon Portal series #1. Dark fantasy, fea, demons, dragons and pixies. Cliffhanger.
Sabine has been hiding for more than ten years, not only is a land that is hostile, but also hiding her true self under a glamour so know one knows who, or what, she is. Malek, a stranger, accepts her mark of a debt when he helps her one night. There is something compelling about him.
Everyone is keeping secrets. Because spilling them might also spill blood.

Dark and compelling, the story starts out with Sabine being hunted and that scenario happens over and over. There is a large cast to keep up with as the danger grows and she has to make difficult decisions. Some that are beyond her control.

Cliffhanger as the story continues in the next book.
A bright spot: the pixies. 🧚 and the artwork at the beginning of the chapters.

***I received this book courtesy of Netgallery in exchange for an honest review***

This book was amazing. I loved it.

Sabine is on the run and has been living glamoured to prevent detection. Things change when Malek comes into the city, she is drawn to him in a way she's never been but Malek is hiding something. She is also being hunted by the fae and by some shady characters.

My one gripe is the end though. I wanted more from the "shady characters" trying to kill her, it just seemed like a lot of trouble to go through and we don't even get to meet them.

It really was a good book. I have never come across this author but I am definitely joining the mailing list so I know when the next book comes out.

A hard-hitting heroine with a carefully crafted hidden existence may find herself exposed and in mortal danger when a mysterious stranger comes looking for magical artifacts and Sabine cannot discover the secrets Malek keeps as deeply hidden as his true agenda.

Jamie A. Waters’ TO KILL A FAE is filled with the magic of great paranormal storytelling with vibrant characters, unexpected twists and so many hidden secrets that will be forced into the light. Enemies become allies, but will it be enough to keep Sabine alive when her family wants her death in the traditional Fae way?

Let the Wild Hunt begin, this powerfully intense tale brings back that special something that makes characters larger-than-life, the tension razor taut and the reading pure delight!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Jamie Waters via NetGalley! This is my honest and voluntary review.

This is great fantasy!!

Wow what a fantastic book! #ToKillAFae truly is a hidden gem in the adult fantasy genre that deserves so much more attention. I got sucked into this world and couldn’t escape even if I wanted and I know that I’ll be getting book two in the #TheDragonPortal series ASAP.

#JamieAWalters created a rich fantasy world with many different magical creatures (demons seelie & unseelie fae, goblins, dragons, dwarves and more), a world that has a detailed history and shows the depth of that history early on in the story - though I suspect there might be much more to come, especially with other races being introduced in book 2! It has racial relations that are multi-faceted and fascinating to read about as well as personal relationships that are way more complex than one would think in the beginning which just adds to the appeal of the story.

The book immediately starts with action, a fighting scene - one that was really well written - a strong female lead and a mysterious stranger that piqued my interest from his very first appearance. It has a dual POV, so we get to read both from the female MC’s - Sabine - and the mysterious stranger’s - Malek, who has a big secret - perspectives. Sabine (who herself also has a secret or two she keeps hidden) is intimately entangled with two demon brothers who can’t really stand each other, are the most jealous males on earth that want to tear apart everyone that looks at Sabine the wrong way, but would both do everything to keep her safe. Their relationships are complex, sometimes feel like they were forged out of necessity and sometimes have a tender, almost loving touch to them, but one thing is for certain: It creates a delicious tension that I am absolutely living for. It is intriguing and plays a big part of the overall storyline. However, the book is definitely not focused on romance - there is no romance between them. It is something that runs deeper, but is difficult to explain and I honestly feel like I am not doing it justice right now, but let me tell you: To Kill A Fae was an AMAZING read!!!

Sabine is feisty, powerful and knows what she wants. She can protect herself, she’s loyal and she won’t stay silent if something bothers her or if she feels like someone is not being done justice. She doesn’t offer the most powerful demon in the city any respect, which made me squeal in delight to be quite honest.
There are also some suggestive lines that put a big smirk on my face. My favourite?

"Where's the key to the chest, Dax?" - "My pants. Do you want to go looking for it?"

One more big plus for this book is also the way the protagonist reacted upon learning of a very big secret that bordered on betrayal. She didn’t over-react. She was reasonable, kept a clear mind, stayed focused and came to a sound conclusion of how to handle the new information. It was admirable!

So, as I said already; this book was fantastic, I loved every second of it and it had everything I so love in a fantasy novel. A variety of magical beings, a strong female lead, sexy male protagonists that would do anything for the female MC, there are secrets, bonds and trust and deceit and an ending that left me craving more and which foreshadowed some political intrigue for the continuation as well!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Four and a half
Sabine has hidden in plain sight amongst humans since the Wild Hunt were first sent out to kill her. Now she hides permanently behind a glamour and although she might have originated in the land of the few remaining Fae Sabine has learned to trust and embrace those around her. Sabine is attacked and yes she can take care of it but a mysterious stranger shows up determined to save her. Sabine is unaccountably drawn towards Malek but his reasons for being in her city are something he’s hiding from everyone.
This features the Fae so obviously I was interested but unsure until a fellow bibliophile said it was definitely my sort of book . Essentially we have a story set in a world after a war that decimated the Fae but also locked down boundaries meaning Gods, Dragons, Human, Fae and everything in between became segregated. It’s made abundantly clear that Sabine is no ordinary refugee and she’s imbued with some very cool powers, yet in order to fully unleash her abilities she would sadly reveal her whereabouts so obviously that’s a huge no .
There are some amazing supporting characters here although it’s pretty clear that Malek is destined to be the love interest. If I’m brutal I wasn’t that enamoured with that idea because honestly for more than half the book he just wasn’t that interesting. Yes I had guessed what he was hiding before the reveal because that was the thing that made the most sense but boy he just didn’t set my pulse racing. That having been said we meet two Demons who were extremely vibrant and actually dominated a lot of this story. Dax who is violent, quick tempered and obsessed with Sabine and Bane who is smooth, dangerous and very cunning. My heart actually wanted Bane as the love interest initially but my head did remind me that hey he’s a manipulative Demon so better give Malek a chance to step up. This has a great deal to recommend it meaning I’m really looking forward to reading more and as it’s urban fantasy there’s plenty of time for relationships to develop . If you want an interesting idea told in a believable way than this author should definitely go on your wish list !
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

This was brilliant. In fact, I don't think there's anything I didn't like about this.

Brilliant and rich world building, well paced plot, excellent characterisation of a wide range of main and secondary characters and an interesting main character.

Sabine is a full blooded Faerie, and heir to the Seelie and Unseelie throne, but she was forced to flee for her life. Many years later she has made a life for herself in a mostly human setting, hiding under a powerful glamour to make her appear human. She has ties to two Demons in the city, brothers who are rivals within the city, a witchy best friend and a Pixie, who is surprisingly badass.

Thjngs begin to go downhill for us in the opening of the book, where an assassination attempt starts a chain of events that will shake up her life and force her out of hiding.

This is great great guys. Read it!

I don't think it is RH, for my lovely RH ladies, but it totally could be. I really love Malek, but the two demon guys have their appeal, too. I wouldn't say there is any sort of love triangle, as I loathe them. Fae aren't particularly monogamous, so even if it's not proper RH there's a good vibe going on with it all anyway. But this is UF, so romance is there, but it's a sub plot, rather than the main plot.

Gonajdnread this now!

4 stars - English Ebook

Quote: She inhaled and gathered her power, infusing her very breath with elemental magic. When she exhaled, she projected her magic skyward. The moon slipped behind the cloud cover and darkened the area. She was too exposed to risk using more magic. It would have to be enough. Sabine took the opportunity to duck into a doorway and crouched down to wait. “Where did she go?” one of the men whispered loudly.-

Quote:She stood and assessed Malek, once again feeling a pull toward him. He was a mystery she’d need to solve sooner rather than later, but the matter of the dead men took precedence—as well as the injury at her side and her hand.-

A fab read and caught and held my interest within the first 5%. At the outset, we meet Sabine who immediately finds herself under attack (dark alley, thugs coming after her). She is mysterious, powerful, and hides her identity under glamour. We find out why much later. This event spins the entire plot into motion, as we meet the mysterious Malek—who comes to her sort-of rescue (he steps in at the last moment and kills the last baddie in the fight). Malek is intrigued by Sabine’s power, and as a powerful being himself (in hiding, because, secrets), he pretty much wants to unwrap her like a Werther’s butterscotch.

Sabine is the most unicorn of unicorns and I didn’t even care. She’s hot and confident. She’s a marshmallow (rescues poor street kids and stuff), but also knows when to blast an overbearing demon/bestie/sometime-sexual buddy with her Magic. She’s already shaping up to be the kind of character with a deep sense of conviction about right and wrong, which might get her into trouble in the future (ie: self sacrificing). She’s like a way more mature and less superficial Aelin (Throne of Glass).

A few little issues:
+I wish it was a little hotter, not really particular about who it’s with.
+the world building in terms of backstory (Fae wars and powers and seelie vs unseelie, demons, pixies, old gods) was info dumped as needed and it was really clunky to get through, at times when the reader needed to feel poised for action to happen (for example, Sabine hears a big explosion outside her door! **Oh no!** excitedly turns page***She cuts her hand and starts chanting and then we get 3 paragraphs about visions she’s seeing and why they are important to a millennia old war and old gods and then I’m ***Zzzzzz*** forgetting why I was into this part in the book.
+ if we get chapters from Malek’s perspective, we should get to know him a bit better. We really only learn about him from Sabine’s perspective.
+ It lagged at parts and the book couldn’t decide if it was about Sabine’s struggles (internal/external), her relationships (Bane, Dex, Malek), or a big ole Fae was and portals and stuff.

All in all I massively enjoyed this book. I will likely hold off on finishing the series until the last book comes out so I can read straight through.

Loved this book! I’m a huge fantasy-phile, and stories involving the fae are some of my favorites. This story hit on all cylinders. There are fae, demons, trolls, dwarves, witches, pixies, and even DRAGONS!

It’s an action-packed adventure with plenty of twists. The author has done a great job of doling out new information in small doses, making me want to read more. The characters are well drawn and most of them are likable, even some of the bad guys.

I enjoyed every page of this story and can’t wait to get the 2nd installment of this series.

I received a book for early reading in exchange for an honest opinion.

This book confused me a little... On one hand it was well written , I really liked the characters . Sabine ,the main character. is interesting and mysterious. Very strong but also helped by friends around her. She has a big secret that is revealed slowly and especially towards the end. It will be said to her credit that She is not ashamed of her femininity and her strength . (Good for her !! ) . The bunch of characters gathered around her were very nice . I really like that the sub-characters are actively involved in the story and here it was very noticeable.

On the other hand, it took me a long time to finish the book and I admit that if I had not committed to an opinion I might have given up. When I try to figure out what did not work for me I think it's a combination of a few things : This book , as I understand it in retrospect, is actually a kind of prologue to the series and the adventures of Sabine and her friends. Not much happens in it and apart from two significant events where there is action and it motivate the plot, the plot is pretty dormant and concentrates on one or two main scenes of occurrence. The dynamics between the characters are repetitive and I found myself bored. The writing is in the third person, something I usually like very much, but here I think it spoiled the possibility of getting emotionally close to the protagonist and identifying with her difficulties and dilemmas. I felt uninvolved, watching from the side and it was not enough to keep me alert and interested. Maybe later in the series emotions Take a bigger part in the story, the plot will unfold and the landscapes will change. Right now I'm taking a break.

I got this book for free on Kindle a while ago. The cover is gorgeous, and I like books with Fae in them, so I thought of giving it a try. I did not expect to enjoy it so much, and I wish I had come across it sooner.

The writing flows smoothly, and there is an air of mystery to the story right from the start. The worldbuilding is amazing; the vivid descriptions made me feel like I was experiencing the moments first-hand.

The characters are unique and their contrasting personalities made for an interesting read. The found-family trope is one of my favorites, so I liked that they looked out for each other even though they did not always see eye to eye. I did find a character annoying during the first half because of their possessive and selfish nature, but towards the end, they grew on me.

The protagonist, Sabine, is a badass. I've read a lot of books where the female can't think straight once the male protagonist enters the scene, but it was different in this case. Though she desired him, she did not let him or anyone else dictate her life. She was her own person and stood by her beliefs. I was also relieved when she did not throw a tantrum after a particular revelation but thought about it rationally.

The thing I liked most about the book is the variety in the races like fae, dragons, demons, pixies, witches, and many more. They all came together to achieve a common goal, and I'm eager to see how they work and grow together. They're all given equal importance, which is another plus point of the book.

The conflicts, secrets, and trust issues kept me on edge. The twists were introduced at the right time and got me excited for the end. I'm curious about the dragon portal, and I want to see how the characters deal with the problem surrounding it.

I recommend this book to fantasy lovers who enjoy strong characters, friendships, action, and some romance. I think the book is still free on Kindle, so don't miss out on it.

Fae, demons, dragons, and pixies all in one book! All of my favorite mythical creatures in the same *9book. None of creatures really trust each other but all of them want to protect Sabine. Sabine has been in hiding for years.

The book does end on a cliffhanger. I'm looking forward to the next book.

I DNFed at roughly 90% but I probably should've done so much sooner.
The writing was strangely appealing to me. Don't get me wrong there isn't any particularly remarkable prose but it just flowed very pleasantly.
But this book has quite a few major issues surrounding the MC.
She is introduced as a badass everyone is afraid of but she never does or ever did a single thing we know about that justifies this supposed reputation in the slightest. (Apart from that one intro scene that is meant to captivate the reader.)

She is, in fact, a very obvious goodie-two-shoes that wouldn't harm a fly even if it killed her.
She is surrounded by overbearing hunky and sexy men who all want her badly.
They all patronize her constantly to a sickening degree but the author constantly tries to excuse this and somehow explain that she is a strong independent woman despite constantly being pushed around and rarely ever speaking up for herself beyond a token effort.

The rough plot outline, while not being anything remarkable or original, was decent and so was the world-building at least in so far that it didn't horribly contradict with anything. There was too little worldbuilding to properly judge this very different alternate world.
But the actual plot execution was just boring.
When she isn't being touched borderline inappropriately by someone, the cast is bickering. Constantly. The other major time waste that might annoy other readers (but I didn't much mind) was how much time we spend in internal monologues about being torn about something or mentally arguing back and forth without making any headway.

The plot progress up to 90% of the book consists of:

There is, of course, a lot of background exploration of the different characters, etc. So it's not so much a problem of the sum of events but for very long stretches of the book, there is no sense of progress whatsoever. There isn't even any kind of clear goal that characters within the story work towards. People mostly just try to figure out what the situation even is and what they want to do about it.

The book indulges in many of the worst melodrama clichées.

A note on the audiobook. In some regards, the narrator is much better than your average small fry narrator but she has a weird tendency to overemphasize every sentence like it is somehow important. I got somewhat used to it over time until I barely noticed it anymore but it started to really stand out again in later overly melodramatic and emotional scenes. This might have been partly because she didn't care for the story either and constantly had to force herself to not sound bored or exasperated though.
She does different voices really well. I very much enjoyed how she was able to make me recognize characters without employing tacky fake dialects, which is something you usually only encounter with higher-profile narrators.

All in all not entirely horrible but I lost my patience when absurd melodrama started to pile up on top of an incredibly slow-moving plot.

I mostly kept listening as mildly engaging background noise while doing other things until it started to go from just boring to annoying.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed the beginning of "To Kill a Fae", we're dropped into action right away and meet Sabine, who is being hunted, but is also dangerous herself. There's mystery surrounding her and her magic, and I was intrigued by the premise and curious to find out more about her past.

However, I feel like the middle of the novel has become more messy. I think it would have benefited from a more developed worlbuilding and clear explanations about the magic system and how magical abilities differ depending on race. It was quite confusing when Sabine would start kissing someone, but then it turned out that it was a way of sharing magic. Is that the only way? Why kissing, just to confuse the reader about the romantic interests of the protagonist? I found that quite annoying.

I did like the action and the existence of different creatures and races in this world: fae, humans, and demons, fairies, dwarfs, dragons, and witches. All of this is quite exciting, but again I believe that such a variety calls for clearer explanations about the world and how all of these creatures would normally interact with each other.

Also, I was a bit disappointed that even though the Wild Hunt is mentioned in the blurb, it's barely even in the book, and their powers are not explained, even though they are such a massive force and are feared so much.

Overall the book was ok, but I was expecting more.

Sabine is Fae, but that is a fact that very few people know. After her father tried to kill her so many years ago, she barely escaped with her life. Since then, she has lived in the city of Akros, under the protection of demon twins Dax and Bane, who are very much at odds with each other. Sabine knows what she has to do to continue to live, and so far, she has been able to do so. But everything changes when she meets charming ship captain Malek Rish’dan, who makes her want to lower her guard for the first time since leaving the Fae. But Malek is hiding secrets of his own, secrets that could tear them apart...

Oh. My. Gosh. I adored this book. Sabine is sassy and relatable, both as a MC and as the heroine of this novel. Her friendships and relationships with the other characters of this book were well written and believable, and Malek is absolutely dreamy! This book could be fast paced at times, but it never felt rushed. The writing was always well thought out. I can’t wait to read book 2, and am happy to have discovered Jamie A Waters as an author.

To Kill A Fae by Jamie A. Waters

This book is delicious! I was immediately drawn in and couldn't put this book down!

Sabine is a fascinating, fierce and strong female MC that has the best sidekicks since Buffy! I absolutely adore Bane and Blossom. Dax loves hard in his own way and Sabine explains in the end why she treats him differently than her brother. I'm eager to see if he survives and continues his pursuit of Sabine in book 2. Malek is a hot addition that has an unmistakable magic flowing through him that Sabine is undeniably attracted to. They burn up the pages in the most innocent of ways, as of now, and I hope something not so innocent happens between them in book 2!

Dragons, people! This book has dragons, demons, witches, Fae, faeries and more!

You need to read this fast paced, action packed book with slow-burn romance.

Bravo, Jamie! What a beautifully written and effortlessly descriptive world that immediately transports the reader to face off with fierce predators, unwavering protectors, awe-inducing magic system and antagonists of epic proportions!

I like that the heroine is a badass. She doesn’t hesitate to stab a “lover” with a dagger dipped in a lethal poison she mixed up. She’s even got poison tipped needles in her braids. And she’s got wicked powers and abilities. It’s all mysterious and entertaining.

I’m not so sure I’m liking the RH feel of the romance though. Let’s see what happens in book 2.

To Kill a Fae was nothing short of AMAZEBALLS, ya'll.
description

Jamie A. Waters blew my expectations out of the water with her imagination and stunning character dynamics. I was immediately entranced with the bond shared between Sabine, a Fae in hiding, and the two demon brothers, Dax and Bane. The details of their peculiar relationship were slowly revealed throughout the book, and I have to say: I LOVE THEM. I can't tell you what direction the author plans to take with Dax and Bane, but I really, really hope one (or both) can have some sort of romantic relationship with Sabine. The way they protect and take care of each other is so real and raw and just... *sigh*.

I know, I know. "But what about Malkin?" one might ask. WELL, I just wasn't feeling it with him. Yes, he's a great guy, he's super duper sweet, but my heart yearns the most for Dax because he challenges Sabine in a way that had my heart racing!

I'm also very interested to see what happens with the Wild Hunt and for Sabine's father and brother to make an appearance in book two.

Thank you to the publisher, the author, and to NetGalley for the ARC. My review is honest and is in no way influenced by others.

To Kill a Fae (The Dragon Portal Book 1) by Jamie A. Waters is a magical paranormal story that gets you right from the very first pages. This is a first for me with this author and I have to say I have found a new favourite. Jamie has done a great job with this tale that is exciting and intriguing, dynamic and vibrant. The characters are unique and an unruly bunch, but Jamie has done a wonderful job of making them come to life and pop off the page. With possessive demons, witches and pixies along with one kick a*se Fae, plus a stranger who is the captain of a ship that deals in smuggling and you have the recipe for one explosive nonstop action tale. I was so engrossed and entranced with this story that I had to stay up late to read each and every word. Who cares if you are tired the next day for work? Certainly not me, not when you have a gem like this one in your hands.

Sabine has been in hiding for many years from those who want her dead, but she has made some powerful friends who will not let anything happen to her but how will they stop her from hurting herself? Just how far will her enemies go to get what they want? Once the Wild Hunt begins there is no stopping it. Will she lose everything and everyone she loves?

I absolutely loved everything about this book. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book.

In this, the start of a new series, we're introduced to Sabine. She is a Fae living amongst humans, in a bid to hide herself from her enemies. Unfortunately, no one can stay hidden forever.

We meet a range of characters - demons, goblins and pixies, and others - all who have an invested interest in Sabine's welfare. There is a lot happening in the book, but I feel there is still so much more to discover about these characters, the Fae world, and Sabine, in particular.

This story hooked me from the first chapter, and kept me interested (and intrigued!) throughout. I look forward to reading the next in the series. I would love to see what happens from here.

I wanted to like this but some issues kept getting in the way for me. The fantasy parts were good with many elements of a fae book that we all know and love. The relationships though were a lot to be desired. A massively powerful fae woman that everyone in the city fears keeps getting treated like a damsel in distress and somewhat helpless by those that actually speak to her. Some even treat her rather poorly and she just becomes a doormat and lets it go. It's an inconsistency that I just couldn't get over.

Well written with a kick ass heroine. A fae 10 years in hiding marked for death. Sabine has made a life for herself after escaping the wild hunt. Then too young to fight back, she now has the magic and fighting skill to defend herself. When a mysterious smuggler comes looking for fae artifacts, she is drawn into the search. Demons, witches, dragons and fae. What's not to love! Really good. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Okay I wanted to like this but it was missing that spark. I had some issues with the heroine. One minute she is acting like a strong independent woman, the next she's sitting on some guy's lap that drugged her a couple days ago. Besides this, the writing wasn't bad and I probably could have powered through but DNF'ed with 39 pages to go. I would normally give a book that I DNF 1 star, but the writing wasn't bad and I was in a generous mood. But life is too short to read boring books.

Being engrossed in this book was like being under a spell; I found myself completely enthralled by the time the first chapter ended. Any time I stepped away, I caught myself lost in my head, wondering what everyone was up to or just processing.

I guess the book’s on the bigger side, but I breezed right through it and wish there was more. It’s fast-paced and with magical creatures, demons, etc. living among humans it still works for plausibility, really. Nothing’s left vague, no shortcuts were taken here. Everything’s well-explained and in a way that makes sense. Amazingly, there’s even originality. Character development, scene-setting and overall story are completely brilliant.

I am in awe.

5 stars - and only because this site won’t let me give more.

When I saw this was releasing on audio, I just *had* to listen. Review updated to add my review of the narrators/production quality, though the above was written from my experience ARC-reading.

Audio:
This sounds AMAZING. The narrator completely did justice to my expectations after having read the book. She sounds amazing and well-suited for sabine. She performs the book well, rather than taking when I call ‘the robot approach’ and the production is clean (free of any other sounds or weird hiccups). 5-stars for the audio production!

Note:
At the time of this review, the ebook is free on all the major retailers. Which means you could snag that for nothing, and then grab the audio version for a discount. Remember to check everywhere as the price fluctuates across retailers.

I was drawn to this story about a powerful fae who is hiding among humans, demons, and sprites. Sabine is powerful yet shows compassion to all beings. We see the compassion but not how powerful she is - she mostly relies on demons to protect her. They not only protect her but they disrespect, undermine, and overrule her at every turn. The demons are aggressively possessive yet she still cares for them and wants them physically at any given moment. Dax is a POS so why does she want him? The best part was when Dax disrespected Selene and Balkin immediately threw Dax against the wall. That's showing power not like Sabine's empty threats.

Enter Malek. Sabine and Malek are drawn to each other's magic and he instantly wants her. I have no idea why he wants her other than we know she's oh so beautiful. Malek's character reveal was interesting but very little of his back story is revealed. I wanted him to outsmart them all with a hidden plot from his POV but instead Dax sacrifices himself for Sabine and we're supposed to care. Not me. Good riddance.

There is the chalice and the goal to seal the portal but it's overshadowed by Sabine and her interactions with these three males. The story needs more conflict from the fae, an unexpected betrayal, more world-building, and other POVs.

Sabine (Sabin'theoria) has been in hiding for many years and has a pact with the demons Dax and Bane to help keep her secrets and protect her. She's an incredibly powerful Fae but using too much of her power will draw the attention of her enemies and the Wild Hunt.

Captain Malek Rish'dan is a pirate captain and comes to Akros looking for someone with Fae blood who can help him on his quest. When he comes across Sabine being attacked, he not only helps her he realizes she might be the one he seeks.

Sabine and Malek are extremely powerful and have secrets they both are keeping, but they are drawn to each other and their magic lights up when they connect.

Meanwhile Dax'than Versed, son of Kal'thorz, the leader of the local theives guild, will do anything to keep Sabine for himself but he is constrainted by a blood oath, with Balkin Lioneyes, her Beast guardian.

Fae aren't suppose to befriend demons, humans, gnomes or most any other races but yet Sabine befriends many as they help keep her hidden from those that seek to hunt her down and she in turn protects them.

A story of intense relationships, mystery, magic, prophecy and the forbidden will keep you turning the pages until the very end. I loved every minute of this story, the worldbuilding, the various races, characters and relationships and I can't wait to read more about their lives.

Jamie A. Waters is a new to me author that I discovered through #BookSirens, I received a free copy of this book and this I feel so lucky to have had a chance to read this wonderful book and share my thoughts about it.

Sabine’s world is peopled by magical races, along with humans stranded there in the aftermath of a war between gods and dragons. What, precisely, Sabine herself is, we are left to wonder and suspect for much of the story, as she is clearly in hiding. The story takes off running, with an assassination attempt on Sabine’s life, and introduces us quickly to Malek, a mysterious smuggler, clearly also with secrets to hide, and demon brothers, Dax and Bane, both of whom are sworn to protect Sabine for reasons – and in manners – we are left to ponder for quite some time.
This is a fast-paced, intriguing and entertaining novel, well written with excellent dialogue and a fair-sized cast of well-developed characters. The world building is fantastically intricate and logical, with details dispersed throughout the book so you never feel overwhelmed. The climax is thrilling and wraps up this novel nicely, yet leads straight into the next one.
For me, the sign of a good novel is when you reach the end and immediately buy the next one, which I did!
