Can Flo follow Daddy Duck on their outing, or will she get distracted? A lively read-aloud and visual treat from author-illustrator Jarvis.
When Flo and her daddy go to visit a relative's new nest, Daddy Duck says Flo must follow him or she'll get lost. Together, they sing a song with all the directions for the journey -- up, down, in, and out. But Flo starts to make up her own words, and soon she gets so carried away that she wanders off. Oh, no -- now a fox is following Flo! Where is Daddy Duck? What are the words to his song again? Jarvis's cheerful illustrations and charming text will have young readers following and singing along with Flo.
Read for my toddler's bedtime. An excellent read and a good influence for kids who don't always follow the rules. The little duck named Flo in this story doesn't like to follow the rules. She doesn't eat the foods she was supposed to, doesn't clean herself like other ducks, and doesn't go to bed like a family of duck do. One day Flo's dad took her on a trip and taught Flo a song. At first Flo didn't want to learn because she thought she could sing a better song. But when she strayed away from her dad, danger came. She utilized her dad's song and it saved her. On the way home, her dad let her lead the way with her song and it's a roller coaster her dad was not expecting. A fun read!

It's not until you become an adult, or a parent yourself, that you realize all those sayings heard from your mom and dad are true and downright handy. As children their repetition is enough to drive you bonkers. You're sure "Many hands make light work" are words meant to enlist your help when you'd rather be doing something else. You're positive "When in doubt, don't" is a phrase designed to take all the fun out of your life.
Fortunately, at any age, those words and phrases, unbidden, pop into your mind exactly when they are needed. Follow Me, Flo! (Candlewick Press, March 10, 2020) written and illustrated by Jarvis brings readers into a ducky daughter and daddy relationship. The cheerful words and illustrations depict a constant conflict between children and their parents with understanding.
This is a sweet story about a young duck girl who is supposed to follow her father on the way to visit a relative, but keeps getting sidetracked. It reminded me of my oldest daughter, who is easily distracted when it comes to following directions, but when she read it, I don't think she saw herself in it. She did like the artwork, however, and my 2-year-old and 4-year-old also paged through the book a number of times and seemed to really take to Flo. This would be fun to pair with Interrupting Chicken, another bird-themed father/daughter story.
Flo is a happy little duck who never wants to listen or follow the rules. That seems to work out for her until the day dad wants them to go on a trip. Despite him very seriously telling her to follow him at all times, Flo wanders away. At first, she has a great time, until she realizes a fox is following her. Suddenly, she remembers her dad’s instructions, and follows them—saving herself from danger.
This over-sized, brightly illustrated book has a good message about following instructions, especially from a parent. It is wrapped up in a fun story that will catch a child’s attention, not scare them, but at the same time, warn them of the importance of listening and following directions.
It will be easy for children to see where little Flo messes up, and to ask them what Flo should have done differently. This is a great learning tool with an important lesson. It doesn’t seem like teaching at all, but instead a cheery tale that will get its message across. Just like Aesop’s Fables there is a good moral to the story. I highly recommend this 5-star book for all children through second grade.

MY THOUGHTS:
I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
Sweet lap picture book with bright, colorful illustrations that accompany the story beautifully. Great lesson about following instructions, doing what you’re told so you don’t get in trouble and being a good listener.
Love the humor and Flo is just a cutie. I can see readers learning some of the words and spending time with mom and dad with this book in tiny readers’ laps following along.
If you know a child who's easily distracted and does not always follow as asked, this is a humorous story to read together. Although there are certain things "little duckies must do every day, Flo did not do any of those things." She seemed to have much more fun doing other things, like riding turtle's back or chasing frogs "through mucky puddles". When her Daddy was going to take her for a visit to Auntie Jenna, he was stern and cautious: "You have to FOLLOW ME all the way." More words were spoken, too, and Flo answered, "Yes, Daddy, I promise. "This book illustrated with a beautiful spring background on every page with Flo center stage takes readers, and Flo, for an adventure she didn't know would happen. Even for young readers, it's a page-turner and surprises wait around the corner as pages turn. I would love to read this aloud to see what children think!
Flo is a duckie who marches to the beat of her own drummer. She doesn't do all the things little duckies are supposed to do. One day, Daddy Duck and Flo go off to visit Auntie Jenna. Daddy says, "Follow me up, Follow me down, Look straight ahead, and Not around." But, Flo doesn't, and gets into some trouble with a fox. She then remembers Daddy's song, and uses it to find him. This adorable picture book uses a sing-song rhythm, incredibly sweet pencil, chalk and paint art and a quick, happy resolution to a problem to create an appealing story for young children. Its large format size and brightly colored naive style art make it perfect for group reads. I will definitely use this for story time.
A Daddy and daughter cautionary tale that will warm your heart and bring a smile to your face, Follow Me, Flo! is full of adventure and fun. The rhythmic, rhyming text is written with a wonderful, appealing sentiment that leads the story through twists and turns with just the right amount of tension and drama (peppered with lots of laughs) to engage little ones and make them want more. The beautiful, free illustrations are done in bright, springtime colours and a wonderful expressive quality. Somewhat reminiscent of the Daisy stories by Jane Simmons, this one is simply joyous!
Hey kids, sometimes mom and and dad know best. (but only sometimes). Daddy duck is taking baby Flo out for a walk. And they sing a little song to know the way, until Flo decide her song and her way are better. And so does Mr. Fox....will Flo get away? Spoiler Alert - She does. I love the illustrations and story telling. A solid book.
I don't remember ever reading a book before about the importance of staying with your parent and doing what they say, because otherwise it can be dangerous! This sends that message with song and bright cheery colors, along with a carnival roller coaster and a hungry fox.
It's a daddy daughter read aloud - so fun! The two ducks are out having fun, singing, etc. But there is always the ending you don't see coming....or maybe your little ones will!
Nydelig barnebok. Rytmisk, repeterende og deilig. Kan være flott å bruke ved innlæring av preposisjoner i engelsken. Takk for supertips av lærer på studiet; videreutdanning engelsk ped!
A little duck has a difficult time following instructions from her dad, so she goes on an adventure. But when a fox appears, the little duck learns it’s a good idea to pay attention to what her dad says. It’s a good story to help children learn the importance of being obedient without being preachy.
I just cannot get enough of the lively bright yellow Flo and her adorable facial expressions-those eyes really tell it all! All of the cartoon-like characters are so animated they practically jump right off the page. This story tells in a fun and relatable way the importance of listening to your parents, paying attention and that being responsible is very important yet it can be fun too. The story is a sweet sing-song style which can lead to many fun interpretations from opera to rap. This will keep the story lively and current and will encourage some fun out-loud sharing moments. Additionally, each page is sprinkled with tiny bugs that fly and hop and are just as cute as can be!
Get ready to sing! Flo is a silly little duck who eats ice cream, chases frogs through mucky puddles, and has a hard time following Daddy Duck - even when he sings a song encouraging her to follow him. Instead, she sings her own song - and is chased by a fox. This is an entertaining and fun book to read aloud.
