The Vanishing at Loxby Manor

Rate this book
Disappearances, strange activities in the night, and secret organizations abound in this mysterious Regency romance.

Haunted by the assault she’s kept hidden over the past four years, Charity Halliwell finally has a chance to return home to the quaint village she left more than five years before and the happy life she wants so badly to reclaim. All she needs is good conversation with her old friend and an opportunity to find a governess position, and she can leave the fear and guilt behind. But the family who agrees to her yearlong visit turns out to be a far cry from the one she thought she knew, particularly when her friend disappears and the one man she made certain would not be at the house is forced to return. How can she possibly heal and claim her independence when day in, day out she must face the only gentleman who ever held a piece of her heart?

Piers Cavanagh was branded a coward when he failed to show up for a duel he arranged. He had his reasons, of course, but disclosing them would hurt far more than continuing life as an outcast. And worse, with the mysterious departure of his sister, the strange nightly occurrences in the ruins of an old abbey, and the uncomfortable whispers of a secret organization, Piers must overcome his aversion to society and work with the last person he ever thought he would get the chance to speak to again—the girl whose heart he had no choice but to break.

THE VANISHING AT LOXBY MANOR by Abigail Wilson brings Regency romance, mystery, intrigue and suspense to life in her newest historical romantic suspense novel, set in 1816 in Kent England in the village of East Whitloe.

After five years, our protagonist, Charity Halliwell, returns to Loxby Manor, the home of friends and her only love, Piers Cavanagh. When her friend, Seline, disappears the night Charity arrives, Charity is determined to find her. Can she rebuild her friendship with Piers and rely on Piers, who has been branded a coward and been living as an outcast for the last five years? Every person Charity meets seems to have a secret, but they’re not the only ones. She also has a secret that has fundamentally changed how she approaches life. Questions abound in this story. Where is Seline? What are the secrets of the Cavanaghs and their neighbors? What is Charity’s secret? Why did Piers become an outcast and live in a cottage in Liverpool?

Once again, this author drew me into the book quickly. The characters were compelling, led by strong and capable Charity. Despite her secrets, she came across as intelligent and resilient, but with some trust issues. The secondary characters had a variety of attributes, qualities and flaws that were realistic. This story managed to showcase the emotional landscape of several characters, bringing them to life to this reader.
The plot was suspenseful, fresh, complex and entertaining. The conflicts were both internal and external, arising from characterization and circumstance. There were plenty of plot twists and turns with a couple of them being a complete surprise. The tension, stakes and action in the last third of the book also turned this into a page-turner after a somewhat slow start. What an exciting and dramatic ending!

Once again, this author has brought mystery, romance, disappearances, family dynamics, secrets and much more come to life in a delightful novel. Her attention to detail made me feel like I was actually living in 1816 with Charity and Piers. At various times, it was poignant, heartbreaking and uplifting. The accurate and specific cultural aspects created an authenticity that one does not always find in novels.

Overall, this was an enjoyable and fabulous read. This is the second book I have read by this author and I am looking forward to the next one. I recommend it to those that enjoy historical romantic suspense and historical mystery novels.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson—FICTION and Abigail Wilson via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and are not biased in any way. Publication date is currently set for January 26, 2021. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

The Vanishing at Loxby Manor is the standalone by Abigail Wilson, published by Thomas Nelson. The story is set in Kent, England 1816, and is about gentlewoman Charity Halliwell who has returned from Ceylon to stay as the Cavanagh family’s guest. She finds them terribly distraught because their daughter has misbehaved and disappeared and keeps seeing lights from the nearby Abbey. Locals are scared and keep away from it while some mysterious activity seems to be going on. She gets help from her close friend and heir to the Manor, Piers Cavanagh, to investigate what has happened to his sister and if the disappearance is part of a lager mystery.

Main character is gentlewoman Charity Halliwell seems a vulnerable woman who has suffered a blow to her selfworth she tries to keep secret. She is relatable and I feel for her, but she also frustrates me as she keeps things hidden and gets in her own way. She seems a well developed character who is easy to like and is my favorite of this story.

Supporting character is heir to the Manor Piers Cavanagh who is a botanist. Having been ostracized from Society following rumors of cowardice, he seems a really good person. Circumstances have not been on his side and he has suffered the harsh, unfair judgment of The Ton.

Main dramatic element of this story is the mysterious disappearance which makes Charity and Piers investigate local matters left alone for years. Rigging of horse races is an interesting element I have not read about before.
The writing has a deliciously dark and mysterious vibe which I love to read this time of year. Charity lands in kind of an investigator role. A“Miss Marple Light” if you will.
Charity and Piers have strong feelings from five years ago before Charity went to Ceylon. I enjoyed the process as complications in their relationship get a chance to be straightened out and feelings rekindled. This is my favorite part of the story.
The faith element is weaved into the last part of the plot as Charity and Piers have to trust God to help them with their struggles.

The ending to this story deserves a few sentences of its own as it was surprising beyond belief. I had my eye on several of the characters, but never the actual culprit. I really loved that.
This is the second book I have read by Abigail Wilson and I have loved them both. She is firmly on my radar now and I am eagerly awaiting what she comes up with next. Readers of Historical romance and Historical mystery I’m sure will enjoy The Vanishing at Loxby Manor. Fans of Abigail Wilson will definitely love it.
Similar authors to explore might be Sarah E. Ladd or Michelle Griep.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for this opportunity to share my honest review. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Conclusion: The Vanishing at Loxby Manor is the intriguingly mysterious historical which includes disappearance, murder and the rekindling of lost love. All tied together in an enjoyably unexpected ending.

Gosh. Abigail Wilson is my favorite author for always. She brings my two favorite genres: Regency and Gothic Mystery together in a oneness that defies perfection!
November 20, 2021
Abigail Wilson’s books have been popping up on my recommendation list for some time and after reading The Vanishing at Loxby Manor, I must say, I should have got to them sooner. Historical romance has always been a favorite genre of mine but when combined with good mystery and intrigue, the story takes on different flavors that please the palate.

Charity Halliwell has returned to her home soil after spending many years in Ceylon but her arrival at her friend's abode is nothing short of a disaster. Like the house of cards tumbling at a slight breeze, the first night sees her best friend Seline vanishing from the Loxby Manor. As events escalate Charity has to use every power in her arsenal to get to the truth of Seline and her various pursuits. With rumours of secret organization and whispers in the corridors, secret lights in the haunted abbey there are many a thing that is waiting to unravel in this mysterious story.

Charity as a character was absolutely delightful, her demeanor and solid nature offering a soothing presence to the goings on inside Loxby manor. I adored Piers too with his deep love for Charity unwilling to harm her reputation and the rekindling of love between Piers and Charity was definitely the highlight of the novel. The twisty surprise at the end was a total gobsmack moment for me coz I had considered all the options but failed immensely with that reveal.

I am so glad that I found this new author who has captured the romance, emotions, family dynamics, secrets, murder and mystery into an utterly captivating tale with perfect historical background. As each mystery in this complex tale unfolds, I was surprised with the ease the threads have been woven to form the brilliant story.

I have enjoyed all of Abigail Wilson's books—and Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey became an instant favorite earlier this year—so I couldn't wait to get my hands on her next book. True to form, The Vanishing at Loxby Manor was wonderfully atmospheric with a mystery that kept me guessing and a swoony flair of gothic romance. There's a thread of past tragedy woven throughout the story that was poignant and touching...I appreciated how delicately and skillfully the author handled the topic. And of course, the romance was my favorite part!

In Vanishing at Loxby Manor Abigail Wilson has created a gothic romance that is filled with great characters and a mystery that unfolds chapter by chapter. A perfect blend of mystery, family relationships, lost years, and star-crossed love. There is also an integral thread of letting go of past tragedy and moving into the future. This book is perfect for readers who love Regency fiction in gothic settings. Be warned, you won't be able to walk away from these characters.

To start, I obtained this as a audiobook. And I loved Laura Kirman as the narrator. She did a brilliant job. This was a historical, clean romance mystery and nothing about it was predictable. I was simply sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time.
So many things happened. There was childish decisions, scandal, duels, lies, secrets and suspense. It was a thrilling “who done it” type of story.
The only reason this didn’t getting a 5 star review is because of the H and h. They “danced and danced” around there relationship so much, with lots of doubting sprinkled with terrible communication. All of that wore me out. The author finally put me out of my misery at 85%, whew!!!
Overall a great read that I highly recommend.
Thank you Thomas Nelson and Zondervan via Netgalley for gifting me this audiobook. I’ve voluntarily given my honest opinion.

I thought this was a Christian book, but nope. I was left disappointed at the lack of Jesus and faith as it felt like there were loads of great scenes and opportunities to present the Gospel. :(

{I received this book to read for review through Netgalley and Thomas Nelson publisher. All opinions stated are my own }

I was sucked into this mystery as soon as I began reading, the details triggering my curiosity to find out exactly what was going on. I'm amazed how the author was able to do that with her writing style and it really is noteworthy.

At some point, maybe about halfway, I began to wonder, "Is this a series?" I just felt like something was missing, and then I shrugged it off because I figured it was probably because I didn't pay attention to one of the details. Thankfully, by the end, I had grasped most of the details and everything made sense. But as I finished the book, I still wondered about some things that had been mentioned in passing and I felt a bit of a disconnect with the characters themselves because of this. I did connect with aspects of Charity's character and liked how she conducted herself.

Now, the mystery is good and a bit shocking. The romance was sweet and made sense. There was a few sentences about God and praying was about all the spiritual content throughout. Which I didn't find to be a problem, just noting it.

I liked this story. Once upon a time, I would have considered three stars a bad rating, but now I know it isn't. Others will love this story. Some may note the things I did and like it. I'm sure I'll read another by this author in the future.

Two things I have been loving lately are Regency Romances and Gothic Mysteries. With the increasing love for the Regency Romance genre proliferated by the popularity of the Bridgerton Series, I am hoping that more people pick this up if they have grown to love that time period - with the writing mostly of strong women some fighting for independence or overcoming adversities, and showcasing brilliant minds as in this case, solving a mystery of a disappearance and possibly even murders.

Abigail Wilson delivered both a proper Regency Romance and a Gothic Mystery in her masterful and addictive writing of The Vanishing at Loxby Manor. This is a great murder mystery sprinkled with bread crumbs I picked up along the way which made this novel a delightful read I really enjoyed. The story was tightly plotted and left me guessing until the end - during the revelation. I really enjoyed how the pieces of this mystery came together in the end. This book had it all, a great location in a grand manor in the beautiful British countryside, secret societies and secret meetings, fantastic characters you will love to hate, and the complex family dynamics that abound. This was a delightful read and I could not stop turning those pages quickly enough for the riveting conclusion of this intriguing story.

1816 Kent, England

Abigail Wilson has done it again! What a lovely historical mystery spun in the pages.

Let's start with the cover. Simply lovely. It shows the mood of the novel and a key location as well.

Charity Halliwell returns to Kent after a five year absence. Her plans are to spend a year with family friends: the Cavanaghs. Charity quickly learns that much has changed with her childhood friends. Following the mysterious disappearance of one of them, she wonders if things are not quite as they are painted to be. In solving the mystery, Charity shows intelligence, compassion and heart. A lovely heroine.

Main male character Piers Cavanagh is an excellent hero as he displays loyalty and strength of character at every turn.

Favorite line: "Love is you and me deciding to stand at each other's side to face whatever comes."

My gratitude to publisher Thomas Nelson for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Whew...quite the thrilling ride here! Charity goes to visit a friends—only to have that friend up and disappear that very night, leaving no trace. Charity is left in a country home with people whose motives are doubtful and a first love who is firmly in the past. She hopes to find out what happened to her friend, but that’s complicated by Seline’s mother’s attempts to shield her reputation. And can any of the neighbors be trusted?

You might not want to read the secret society parts in the dark. It was just detailed enough to give a sense of reality and danger but didn’t get overly grisly.

The romance is very well done and mostly chaste. Christian parts are almost nonexistent.

Thanks to the publisher for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required.

I love the aura of mystery and suspense in this moody Regency! Charity had a wonderful childhood with the neighboring Cavanaugh's, but after several years apart, relationships have shifted and she struggles to find her footing as Seline's disappearance weighs on them all. I admired that she had the confidence to pursue an investigation with the limited resources available to her, and did not give up on her friend. Each character in the story has secrets hanging over them, and the author skillfully alluded to the mysteries and unfolded them slowly throughout the story. I loved that Piers and Charity have a second chance at their young romance, even though it's fraught with difficulties. A steady pace with some twists and surprises made this a book I didn't want to put down!

In this historical-mystery story, Charity goes to stay with her best friend’s family in England while her own family is in America. Her best friend vanishes one night, and as police don’t really investigate missing persons in these times, it is up to Charity and her friend’s brother (also her lifelong crush) to figure out what happened.

It’s a decent story with decent characters and kept me interested. Sometimes it seemed like it didn’t know what it wanted to be: a gothic horror? a romance? historical drama? murder mystery? The pacing was a bit slow in the middle. But it’s a good mystery with a nice blend of suspense and puzzles and romance. I recommend it for any fan of the genre.

Audio narrator is pretty good but tries too hard to make her voice sound low for men’s voices, which makes them all sound like dorks.

Mystery surrounds a family, a ruined abbey, and a sudden disappearance making a young guest and friend of the family fearful about her visit. The atmospheric suspense, attention to historical setting, and complexity in the characters made this latest release by a stellar author a must-read.

Charity Halliwell once thought to marry the oldest Cavanagh son, Piers, but her family’s sudden move to Ceylon and his letter ending their prospects left her bereft and vulnerable. An attack in the dark of the tea plantation has left her disgusted at her naiveté in venturing outside on her own and quelled her spirit as well as her dream of ever marrying and having a family. Now, when her parents journey to join her brilliant chemist of a brother in America, Charity longs for her old neighborhood and friends as a comfort. She knows from Selene’s letters that Piers will not be there as he lives away from the family.

The first night of her visit to the Cavanaghs is enough to convince her that she made a mistake seeking solace in the past. Mrs. Cavanagh isn’t exactly welcoming and mischievous Selene sneaks into Charity’s room to admit that her mother wanted her to leave Charity to her own devices. However, Selene has been a hoyden kissing a groom and flirting with others. She wants the only man in a neighborhood with a title, but she will toy with the others. On this night, she mentions a secret plan to have her way and then whisks off into the night with Charity’s dark cloak about her never to return.

The youngest Cavanagh, Avery, is sent to search for Selene on the road to Gretna Green and Piers returns to support his family trying to ignore the spark between Charity and himself that he purposefully extinguished. She has since learned that he challenged Selene’s lord to a duel and then didn’t show which had him branded a coward and ostracized from polite society. Charity has her own reasons for keeping her distance from any man let alone Piers, but she is certain that Selene never ran off with the groom she kissed and she is equally certain that Piers is no coward whatever the reason he didn’t show to that duel. She will stand by the family and help get to the truth even if she must brave a mysterious shadowy enemy.

The Vanishing at Loxby Manor is a delicious gothic-flavored romantic suspense in the old style. The narrative is all from the periled heroine’s perspective and offers a personal as well as external conflict to show her what she is made of and bring about some startling reveals.

Charity has been assaulted and feels guilt-ridden for her part in it, but also considers herself soiled goods in that day and age when reputation is everything to a woman and whether it is her fault or not, she becomes tainted. She also wanted to protect her heart after Piers squashed it like he did. I was thoroughly taken with Charity and was impatient for her to work out the truth of it all and work out what was quite obvious to me as the reader when it came to her and Piers.

The mystery of Selene’s disappearance was cunning and the reader has to follow it through to the end before discovering the dark, gritty truth behind it all. There are enough ambiguous players who all keep something back so that the truth is long and hard in coming. I confess to wanting to kick Avery in the britches for the longest time because he was the most obvious of those lying. Did he not want to find his sister??? But, later, I learned it was complicated.

I found that as the story was building to those final stunning reveals that there was the middle ground that felt somewhat dragging to me. There was a great deal of waiting for something significant to happen and I got impatient. However, I did the story a disservice because in the end, I saw how all that set up and slow going added together. So, fortify for that slow-go of the middle of the book, future readers!

In summary, this was a splendid and suspenseful romantic historical that will tantalize readers with its gothic flavor and mysterious tone. I recommend it to those who enjoy sweet historical romance and mystery.

My thanks to Thomas Nelson for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Well, it looks like I have found a new go-to author for Regency mysteries! Abigail Wilson blew me away with this book!

Charity Halliwell is visiting Loxby Manor for the next year when her friend Seline runs off one night and goes missing. They believe she has run away to be with her forbidden love, but inconsistencies in the story and the letter that is left makes Charity question what really happened. Was it something more nefarious? Is Charity in danger?

Charity must team up with Seline's brother, Piers, to help find her. Piers has also just returned to Loxby Manor after a scandalous event. Piers and Charity have a past together that they will have to overcome in order to find Seline.

I felt that the story moved along at a great pace, enough to keep you turning the pages and staying engaged.

I loved The Vanishing at Loxby Manor so much that I immediately added her other books to my wishlist and can't wait to pick them up! If you like mysteries and romance in your historicals, I highly recommend The Vanishing at Loxby Manor!

This was such a good book! 4.5 ⭐

I can't get enough of Abigail's mysteries! They are so good!
The intrigue and mystery were a main focal point, but this love story that was perhaps secondary, really moved me. It was raw and real.
Charity and Piers grew up together but in their time of separation they had both respectively matured and endured very difficult seasons that changed and molded them. It was really satisfying to watch them sort through their emotions individually and together throughout the story and the ending was even more satisfying. In general, they were really relatable characters--not perfect, physically or otherwise (I love that Abigail consistently creates characters who have disabilities) and their love was mature and hard earned. Just really loved this story...their story. 💖

Wow, I did not guess that ending!! I always enjoy listening to Abigail Wilson’s books as she creates great mysteries and has a fantastic narrator. I always go into her books knowing it’s going to be a solid read. If I were to be honest & a smidge hypercritical, I’d say that I wish she had a little bit more romance and characters that weren’t so cookie cutter. Her writing is absolutely fabulous but I feel like the characters tend to feel the same for me. She rocks though.

A gripping story of heartache, betrayal and intrigue, set against the backdrop of Regency Era England.

Charity Halliwell returns to Loxby Manor to spend time with family friends, but the sudden disappearance of her friend Seline tosses everything into question as rumors fly and reputations are threatened. Charity must join forces with the man who broke her heart, the brother of Seline, Piers Cavanagh to find out who and what they are dealing with.

An engaging tale of adventure and intrigue right from the start, a full cast of characters and motives leave no one safe from suspicion. Charity is more mature and not as carefree as she once was, and I admired her determination to help her friend and not let her past keep her passive. The rich backstory adds to the plot, and I liked how the twists and turns kept me guessing.

Honor and loyalty are tested, while some are left to suffer the fallout, this is a hard to put down read that had me up later than is practical to find out what would happen. I liked that it had me wondering right up to almost the end. And I think the social obstacles were realistic, and understandable, making the tentative alliance between Piers and Charity all the more tension fraught and uncertain.

Overall, a riveting read of intrigue, betrayal and enduring love, that I thoroughly enjoyed. There is a lot going on between the social intrigue, as well as the dark secrets that threaten their very futures. Well executed plot, good pacing, and a fantastic cast of characters make this an excellent read for fans of historical suspense romance!

Weaving a shadow of mystery among the gilded countryside of Regency England, Wilson's tale of love lost, buried shame, and secret societies is a delicious blend of romance and intrigue. Flawed characters grace each page with a vulnerability and deep desire to be known for their true selves, which is a beauty unto itself. Splash in gorgeous historical Regency details, and murder brewing around every stone and readers will be burning through the pages until the riveting end.

The Vanishing at Loxby Manor is a historical mystery/suspense set in 1816 in Kent, England with gothic elements which involves a disappearance, murders and a secret society. I listened to the audiobook and I liked the clarity in Laura Kirman's narration which helped me keep up with the story without difficulty; the writing is also good by the author. However, I feel that it would have been a better option for me to read the book instead or read it along with the audio to get a better feel of the mystery/suspense and gothic elements of the book.

This is a Regency story with a complicated mystery to unravel along with renewing old friendships, estranged family relationship with undercurrents of secrets. Charity Halliwell grew up near the Cavanaugh family at their home, Loxby Manor, in the English countryside but has been in Ceylon with her family for five years. Her parents are now in Boston visiting her brother and she is going to be staying with the Cavanaugh family. Something happened to Charity in Ceylon that was traumatic and she didn't want to travel to America. She can tell right away that something is strange at the manor upon her arrival when no one is around. She has a brief visit with Seline, her friend, but then she disappeared. Soon, the family is turned upside down trying to find out what has happened to Seline. There are lot of strange things going on with all of the family members. Mrs. Cavanaugh has emotional issues, Avery, the middle son, is hiding something, Mr. Cavanaugh is bedridden and blind from an accident with his horse, Piers, the oldest son, is living near Liverpool because of a scandal although he did return after Seline's disappearance. Piers and Charity were close at one time but things are strained between them now. The two do decide to put their heads together to figure out what is going on with the others and Seline's disappearance.
The atmosphere, setting, time period, and characters all make this story so rich and the mystery of everything going on is complicated and makes for a story that kept me engaged. I was quite surprised with how things turned out. Things are not always how they seem. Definitely recommend this story for a historical mystery with complicated relationships, light faith thread, and some romance.

Told from a Christian World View amidst dark and sinister circumstances, this book exudes an air of foreboding.
After five years away, Charity Halliwell returns to Loxby Manor, the estate of family friends. Strange things begin to happen, including the disappearance of her best friend, Seline, on the very night she arrives. She is warned by those close to her but whether for her protection or to prevent secrets from coming to light, is something she is determined to find out. She does not know who to trust. “It was as if I had wandered into a dreamland where all my childhood acquaintances had elevated themselves to villains of their own stories.”
With beautifully descriptive words, the author tells a tale of many secrets. Some begging to be set free, some best left buried. Piers Cavanagh, eldest son of Loxby Manor who has secrets of his own, pairs with Charity to uncover the truth about his missing sister. What they find is almost more than they can comprehend. But Piers and Charity are forced to confront their shared past. “I am not certain anyone can go back, not really. It is more about finding a way to go forward, to trust that God will take something bad that has happened and work it for good.”
Ms. Wilson is one of the best Gothic Regency authors of today.

The Vanishing at Loxby Manor is another great read by one of my favourite authors, Abigail Wilson. This historical romance is bursting with mystery and intrigue. A secret society, abbey ruins, and a missing person all culminate into a mysterious and creepy tale. I enjoyed getting the know the main characters, but the real fun came in discovering which of the supporting characters was the real perpetrator. I must say, I was surprised. This was not a very predictable read and was entertaining right up to the very last page. I highly recommend this book to historical fiction fans, especially if you're in the mood for a little mystery.

It begins with a vanishing. Author Abigail Wilson skillfully weaves a mystery of twists and turns that had me guessing until the very end. Both the hero and heroine carry scars of their past, afraid of what it means for their future and I love the delicate way their love conquers their fears. I enjoyed the pacing of this mystery and the lovely way Ms. Wilson develops the characters who uniquely enhance the plot making her a go-to favorite. It's the perfect combination of mystery, history, and the power of living in the beauty of new beginnings.

Abigail Wilson is a new author to me. Of the three books she's written, this one was my favorite. I had a hard time figuring out who the bad guy was; she does that well in all her mysteries. I found myself wanting to get back to the book every time I had to put it down; however, at times I thought
it was a little bit drawn out. Also, not sure why it is called Christian fiction because there is nothing in any of her books that speak about the Lord or that the characters even have faith in Him.

I picked this novel out for a 2022 reading challenge I've joined. It's a good story. If you like a darker mystery/suspense story wrapped around the prominent romance - this is right up your alley. It delivers all the elements and wraps up with a satisfying ending.

It's written in first person point of view, which I don't typically read. The whole story is delivered from a single point of view, which means there is a good bit of navel-gazing throughout. But if that's what you enjoy, then this book is for you. It's just not my preferred style.
