Cursed Studies #2

Academy of the Forsaken

Rate this book
When I arrived at Roseborne College searching for my foster brother, I had no idea what I was in for. In the past few weeks, I've endured torments both physical and emotional. I've looked death in the face. And I've made an unnerving discovery that's left me scrambling to pick up the pieces of the quest I started out on.

But the supernatural beings who run this school haven't conquered me yet. I'll turn the tables on them with my newfound knowledge—and maybe with the help of three temptingly screwed-up guys I never expected to count on.

At least, that's the plan. Everyone in this place is keeping secrets: me, the guys I might be falling for, and my brother. Secrets big enough to bring us together... or to tear us completely apart. How will I find the strength to continue the fight if it turns out I can't trust anyone—not even myself?

*Academy of the Forsaken is the second book in a gothic paranormal trilogy with shades of Beauty and the Beast. If you love snarky heroines, damaged heroes, dark secrets galore, and reverse harem romance with no choosing required, look no further! Just beware: Once you enter Roseborne College, there may be no coming back...*

So, this week 5 Eva Chase books came in and I had such a hard time deciding which one I was gonna read first. I've been looking forward to read the Moriarty series for a while now, but last week I read the first book in the cursed studies series and I was very eager to continue that one too, especially after that amazing cliffhanger!

This book continues right where we left and I love that. At some points it felt like a few things were re-explained a little too often, but it most likely felt that way because I was reading this book in one sitting. I started and I just couldn't stop anymore, especially because Chase really knows how to hand out new pieces of the puzzle at a perfect pace. Every time I could use a little excitement, we got some new info or discovered something interesting. And therefore, even though there wasn't that much action in this book, it never got boring.

In this book Chase takes the time to really deepen the relationships between all the characters. We get to see much more of the relationship between Trix and her adoptive brother and the relationship between Trix and her three guys get the chance to develop. Within each relationship there are struggles and questions that need to be answered and watching those characters learn and grow and figure out what they want is such a joy!

But, that doesn't meant the plot stands still. There are some really big and interesting reveals in this book and I really admire Chase for the cleverness of the plot. Everything fits so well, hints in the first book lead somewhere now, some weird things are finally making sense. She must have thought this all out so well!

I can't wait to read the last book in the trilogy and to figure out how it ends! The cliffhanger of this book at least was very very every exciting!

Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.

Academy of the Forsaken has absolutely shocked me. Eva is one of my favorite rh authors and I have read quite a few of her series so I generally know what to expect but this series for some reason has caught me by surprise.

Let's talk characters. While I do like Trix and the guys they weren't the best of people, they all have problems that they need to work on, I mean that's the entire reason the school picked them in the first place. But it's hard for me to know if I really like them or not because this evil as F college has put everything in a weird frame and it's hard to get a read on them. The college influences so much it's hard to say but I what I see so far I like them but I'm not swooning over them like I have with the guys in Eva's previous books. I like Trix, she is tough and hard on herself but she tries to make things better, she owns the crap she's done and tries to better in the future.

The story turned darker than I expected. Cade has a lot more scenes and the more he and Trix interact the more of the relationship dynamic is revealed and let's just say it's unsettling in the least. It revealed a big part of Trix's past and personality and makes me see her in a different light.

As for the story, it really got interesting this time, in this book, more of the past is brought to light. We learn more about each of the main characters, we finally find out exactly what each main character did to windup in Roseborne College. The reveal of their past is making things add up in the present why Roseborne effects them in certain ways and why the would navigate towards Trix and why their feelings for her are so strong.

The mystery started in Academy of the Forgotten, in Academy of the Forsaken, the mystery just keeps getting bigger. So many questions, who really runs the college, what happened in the school's past and why does Trix seem to be the exception to the rule when it comes to the school. This story ends on a crazy cliffhanger and I'm looking forward to getting answers to at least one of those questions.

This wonderful storyline gives the reader a more in depth understanding of the workings of the Academy, but it is hinted that there is still more to discover. The relationship between Trix and her foster brother becomes more complex as you continue through the book. Trix still has the support of her three men and we learn a little more about these great characters. I am looking forward to the next book. This one is a great read, but it is not a stand-a-lone story.

Wow. This was one of those books that I kept having to put down because I was afraid to see what happened next. It took me an hour to go back and finish the last chapter. Trix figured out how to keep her memories as she once again returned to Roseborne College in exactly the same way she arrived before. She can even remember some things from what are apparently several past iterations of time spent there. Times when she grew close to each of the three guys she was drawn to during her last cycle through. Something seems to be different this time. Since she can remember the discoveries she made last time she makes Poland to get back to the evil rose bush in the basement. She also starts seeing visions of things that happened in the very distant past to a group of students in school uniforms. She puts pieces together and discovers her own connection to school's past.

Now that she can remember Ryo, Jensen, and Elias, they all grow even closer. The fly in the ointment is her foster brother, Cade, who spends most of his time in a monstrous form living in the nearby forest. He is a manipulator who works to convince Trix that the guys she likes are only after one thing. Will she believe him? Will she be able to get back to the basement where the rose bush grows and destroy it? Will that save the students? The ending will shock you!

I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

Wow, I INHALED this book, literally listened to it whenever I could find spare time. I really think the issues I had in book 1 were improved/resolved in this one, its hard to find faults in it. In terms of the story, we get more answers, some were really cool and I totally didnt see it coming! I love when you get a book like that, it doesn’t happen a lot. I really enjoyed the developments with Trix and her 3 guys, especially Elias. I thought their tender moments were fantastic and I couldn’t get enough of it. We get to learn more about the guys backstories, even more about Kade and Trix. I will say I want to punch him in the mouth for his shenanigans. i feel like what Trix thinks he is at the college for is not the real reason. Like him not being a great person and how he treats her is. But thats just my theory. The ending....I instantly had to stop my yard work and figure out when book 3 was releasing. Totally already preordered the ebook (not sure how long the audiobook will be after its release, but I know I will devour that one too).

The narration I thought was great! Jason Clarke’s voice still makes me stop what I am doing and listen to his every syllable haha. I think the nuisances he does for the different guys is great. I thought Lidia did a fabulous job and I will be definitely listening to more of her work in the future. No complaints from me whatsoever!

Great sequel, even better than book 1. Highly recommend on audio and ebook ❤️❤️❤️

When Trix first got to Roseborne College searching for her foster brother Cade, she had no idea what she was in for. She's coped with physical and emotional torments as she made discovery after discovery. Now she is scrambling to pick up the pieces after discovering that supernatural beings are running the school with the help of three screwed-up guys that she had no idea she would end up counting on. Now she has a plan to use all the knowledge she has gained in order to take the place down. The problem is everyone from her brother, the three guys she might be falling for and even herself are keeping secrets. How can she find the strength to continue to fight if it turns out she can't trust anyone (including herself)?

This was definitely an action-packed second instalment of the series. So many revelations and discoveries as Trix tried to navigate everything in her path and handle all of the changes as they happened. I was definitely reading this story faster and faster as I got further into the story and needed to know what happens next. Well written and very enjoyable, you will become addicted as you read this book. It does end fairly abruptly after a major event so be prepared for some frustration at the end!

Eva Chase’s Cursed Studies Trilogy is about sins, retribution, suffering, guilt with a healthy dose of ghosts and magic. This reverse-harem romance keeps you on your toes even as you might only be sitting at a place, lost within the pages of the books. If I do not count the time I had to wait before getting the last book, I finished the whole trilogy within 3 days. Yes! It is that exciting and nerve wracking.
Roseborne itself is the villain of the story as Trix along Elias, Jensen, and Ryo battle vengeful spirits embittered by their own lives. The story itself is not only about this battle for freedom and life but also for getting back to the world to make amends.
Yes, the characters in the book are not innocent and for some, the crimes elaborated in the book might weigh heavily on the moral compass; but the author takes us past that. The story of Trix and her harem shows us the power of love, compassion, and forgiveness. The battle within as each character strives for revival and redemption is almost at par with the war being waged outside as it is up to Trix to fight on the behalf of all who have lost all will of actually living.

Things make a lot more sense now

This review applies to all the books in the series.

Not sure if it was the mood I was in the first time I read this book (I stopped at 57%) or something else, but I decided to give this series another try because I have loved everything else by Eva Chase. I'm glad I did give this another try. The first book is the most confusing and odd - and rightly so as this is what Trix herself is experiencing. This is similar to another series I read (which was also good, but had a bitter/losing, although fitting, type of ending) and this gives me the overcoming/confronting our own personal darkness and also the evil perpetuated by others that I was craving. Each book got even better as the story built and we get to know what each member of the group did in the past and how they feel about it now. This was a great series and I encourage you to get past the confusing and odd first book (we do find out why things are the way they are) to get to the depth in this series.

Audio book review

Book 2 in the series. This story is different than Evas usually stories. This one is a goth , dark paranormal.
This book 2 continents where book 1 left off . The characters are well developed. The scenes are well written and very detailed.
Trix is the heroine. Trix goes back to the Academy trying to figure out what the rose bush does with all that energy that it gives to the professors. She also tells her guys that this time she didn’t forget what happened and what her plans are. There is one glitch, she wants to help her foster brother, but he plays the on Trix feeling. Trix slowly takes steps to brake the hold the teachers have. Her men help her out . The attraction between them is hot. Can’t believe the ending

The performance of Lidia Dornet, Jason Clarke was strong, smooth and they brought the story to life

We're diving deeper into everyone's secrets!

After reading the first book, of course, we think that the professors are cruel to the students with their torturing punishments and lessons. In this book, we learn more about what students have done to get their one-way ticket to Roseborne College, including our main characters. When you hear about their tales, one can almost understand why they were sent there and find their punishments almost fitting, in a perverse sort of way. We also learn that everyone has a curse put on them on top of having to attend the school and take the classes ( for example, Violet and her burns that won't heal).

We're also seeing that not everyone is how we may have perceived them to be earlier on.

Things are definitely complicated, and that's not even to talk about what happens at the end of this book!

This had quite the surprise ending! Things were happening that were ramping up this series haunting qualities! Just what fuels this academy's magic? We'll find out in the next edition! But just wow!! This was rife with complicated feelings from revulsion to joy. The relationships between Trix and her foster brother is so complicated. She desperately wants to please him, but if she does, she's sacrificing bits of herself each encounter. When the three guys start to show their emotional investment in Trix, things start to fall into place, and it's wonderful to see Trix's confidence soar! These three hot guys are more than eager to share and combine their passions to please Trix. If you want an intriguing academy read, one that will keep you guessing, this is for you!

I received a free audio copy of this book directly from the author for an honest review.

I just love how with these books, the further you go a little more of the puzzle of this plot is revealed at just the right moment! At no point did I find myself feeling this book lacked anywhere, we find more parts of each of the back stories out which in themselves are pretty chilling! It’s really interesting to watch these characters grow and develop an the relationship between them blossom. You also see a lot more of her step brother Cade and the struggles and relationship between Trix and him. I haven’t even gone into the main plot of the book which is exceptional including yet another cliffhanger ending!!

And here I thought it could not get any better, or crazier. Ah the secrets running around along with the hot guys and weirder classmates makes Trix life a wild read. I loved the darker feel to an academy story and the mix of paranormal and outright weird. Never quite knew what was around the corner, and sometimes it was scary. There is more character background and why some are all here to try to survive what is going on. But it was well written so much that the dark scary feel came through and kept me reading just to see what would happen next and what Trix would find. Not a ligh read but man it was good.

We return to Roseborne College, and the mystery that surrounds it. The relationships between Trix and her men are evolving, as we keep getting more glimpses into their histories. No one at the college is an innocent, but as we learn more secrets and backstories it becomes obvious that some are even more monstrous than previously assumed.
The mystery of the college and it’s powers, and how those powers came to be are slowly being uncovered. Like the petals of the roses that surround it, we discover layers upon layers of secrets and lies. I can’t wait to read the conclusion to this twisty, engrossing tale.

This second book in the series is even better than the first. It really gives you a more in depth understanding of all the characters. Each get to share more of their story and I really enjoyed learning more about them.

It reveals a lot more about the school and how some of this all began. You also get to see more of the relationship between her and her foster brother. It really keeps you guessing.

I am really looking forward to the next book.

Wow love the cliffhanger! More of the mystery surrounding Roseborne academy is revealed with Trix's persistence to save her brother Cade. She's come to realize self love and her love for Elias, Jenson, and Ryo helps her growth and journey. I love reading how Trix also helps Elias, Jenson, and Ryo aspire to be a better version of themselves. Their growth and chemistry/connection are wonderful to read. Can't wait to read the next book! How she can free all her loved ones with their humanity/youth intact?

Revelations

This second instalment to the Cursed Studies series seemed to revolve around the theme of revelations. Secrets exposed, the past beginning to be uncovered, emotions realised and manipulations discovered. But the main mysteries are still yet to be solved; what exactly is going on at Roseborne College and how the hell do they get away alive? This story had a lot of emotional ups and downs and quite a bit of steam, as Trix solidifies her relationships. With a 'wtf!?', frantic ending, i'll be holding out for Academy of the Fateful.

Solid sequel to book 1

So book 2 continued with Trip attempting to free the students from the sadistic staff at Roseborne College with the help of her 3 love interest, Jenson, Rio, and Elias. But her return this time around has left her with the previous memories as well as a few surprising perks of her own.

This book was heavy on her attempt to figure out her relationship with the three men as well has her strained relationship with her foster brother Case.

This 2nd book was an excellent follow-up to book 1 and I can't wait for the release of book 3 in June.

Not a lot happened. Trix remembers her last attempt to find her brother and has hazy memories of the other six times. She uses this knowledge to... chisel a hole in the laundry room to get to the rosebush. A hole that repairs itself when she's almost done. That's literally it. The rest of the book is her making kissy-face with the guys.

When Trix visited Cade in his human form, he was so blatantly manipulative that I resolved to DNF if the whole thing was painted as romantic and she added him to the harem.

Trix gains vague superpowers out of nowhere, which serve to deus ex machina them out of situations for the rest of the series.

The story in the second book is more about self-evaluation for the characters. There's no major incident in the classroom involving Trix, and the staff doesn't pay her much attention. However, this book reveals some shocking revelations about Trix's lineage and the extent of her relationship with Cade.

I wondered who was responsible for fixing the wall that Trix had been working on to get to Bushfell's room. But it doesn't matter because Trix managed to get to the other side. The only question is what Trix has unleashed, how to fix the problem, and what future awaits them.

Trix and the guys slowly but surely move closer to peeling back the layers of secrets controlling this hideous school. What mystical power keeps everyone there, and makes the outside world forget them? Trix begins having odd visions that she's convinced are someone else's memories. Whose, and why is she having them? Could this be a one step forward, two steps back situation? An interesting read all in all.

As the story continues for Trix and the guys, things get interesting. Trix had started her journey set to just find Cade. Instead she found out everyone is stuck at that horrid school. Now she is determined to help them all. Love this series so far. Can’t wait for the last book! If you like Beauty and the Beast retellings then you will probably enjoy this series.

Academy of the Forsaken

This book picks up right where the first book left off. Trix is back and determined to free the students at Roseborne. As her relationship with Ryo, Elias and Jenson develops, she's forced to face some hard truths.

I love this series so far, it's a fastpaced, well-written and compelling plot and I can't wait to find out how everything unravels in the final book

I absolutely loved this one. This is yet another fabulous series by Ms Chase. The second installment is where the plot really starts to thicken, relationships become more complex and intricate. I love the way there is no black and white in her characters, and the sheer intricacy of the characters that makes them so three dimensional. I can't wait for more!

More of the mysteries are uncovered and Trix is facing her past and finding her power. This story continues to be dark, twisted, and even sexy. Characters are facing their past, coming to terms with mistakes, and finding their way together. This school is fifty shades of sinister magic!

Jason and Lidia are EXCELLENT!

Compelling read!

This was more of a fraught emotional ride than the mysterious, ominous one of the first book but the dark elements were still strong and the mystery continued to engage and unravel.

Very impressed by the depth of the storytelling. (And love the cover!)

Definitely recommend!

Love it.

Loved it! Cant wait for the 3rd one. I really like the way this series explores responsibility, consequences and fault. Balanced with forgiveness and self worth and finding a way to be a better version of yourself in some small way. Very thought provoking for me.

Normally I love Eva Chase books but this series is just not hitting the mark with me. The guys are all the same and Trix is..... Unlikable really. I want to end it for seeing where it goes. The fact that it has a supernatural element is the only thing making me stick with it
