Stepping Out of Time

Rate this book
Enquiring further into the subject of human conditioning - and beyond - Renée Paule takes us past another milestone on her continuing journey of self-reflection, wherein she looks at and discusses the society created and sustained by us. As with Renée’s previous books, her unique perspective gives no answers and is self-help in its purist form - sympathetically encouraging you to think independently. Have you ever wondered ‘What am I doing here?’ or ‘Who am I?’ If so, this book may help you to realise that you’re not alone with these thoughts, or in being frustrated by the maze of conflicting information we’re directed towards when we ask these questions. Ultimately, you may discover that it isn’t answers you are looking for, but yourself.

'Self-reflection', 'Know Thyself' and 'Semi-autobiography'

'Top of the morning' from Ireland.

Many years ago I wrote my autobiography - probably more as therapy than anything else - but life continued happening to me and I got to thinking, what good will this story do, isn’t there enough misery in the world without me adding to it? I subsequently burnt the manuscript. It was around that time that I began searching for meaning in my life and had a profound experience - a realisation that we’re all connected; we’re One. In my books, I take an honest look at our quirky and often bizarre behaviour in society and challenge the status-quo we accept as unchangeable - questioning and pushing the boundaries we set ourselves, and those that have been set for us. I’m convinced that if we want to change our lives and change our world then we must first change ourselves. I invite you to join me on my journey, questioning the society we call ours and the role we play within it.

Renée is a true practitioner of the Socratic method; I could not help but notice the way she seems to predict the 'fake news' storm that we are all currently having to deal with. By asking the reader to look more closely at the normative restraints we place on our definition of society she is trying to tell us that WE need to look for the solutions - that WE often accept solutions (from those in power) that not only fail to solve problems, but actually exacerbate existing problems - informative and down to earth.

*** Note: I received book from the author, in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to author for such wonderful book. ***

If you’re following my reviews regularly, you might have read the previous books by Renée Paule I have read. On the Other Hand: The Little Anthology of Big Questions , Just Around The Bend: Más o Menos , and Louder Than a Whisper: Clearer Than a Bell. All this three books were about step by step journey to self-discovery by unlearning older beliefs, keep looking forward, keep walking on the path of self-discovery and more importantly ,which was the last step, was discovering the meaning of our existence, what we are doing wrong and who we really are, bring change in our-self to change the world for better of humanity.

In this book, author is telling the same thing through her experiences and observations in life. The theme is the same but author has uncovered more layers with new topics and example by simple approach and sole purpose of encouraging readers to embark the journey of self-discovery, change the thinking, broaden the perspective, and make peace with past that is holding us back for better world and more importantly for our own good.

It was very clearly and repeatedly said in the book that ONE can make a change the world, may be not immediately or entirely but eventually. If we think over the problems we have that is invoking all the negative emotions (anger, frustration, jealousy, sadness, depression), it can be turned to positive emotions (love, happiness, kindness, gratitude) by self-reflection. If we look at ourselves in the mirror, observe our mind, face our real face by unmasking the deceiving self,by being real and turning to our innocent self that we were born with, get rid of ‘I’, ‘Me’ and ‘Myself’ and then look at everything at ourselves, the change seems possible. Everything has a choice and so we, whether we want to change or not. I guess I almost summarized the book.

Book was pretty short, I started it yesterday and finished today by noon. After finishing book I was thinking how to put my thoughts together. Also thinking what I was doing wrong that author has mentioned in book and so I was going through all the mess in my head I realized it’s so hard to organize it. But let’s get back to book, I’m sure you guys don’t want to see that ugly mess of my mind.
Topics that I loved to read in the book were-

Know Thyself which looked so simple and obvious by title but the content of this was so amazing specially the sub topic ‘adult’.

Memory and thoughts– I liked the examples and the different ways author approached to go deeper in it and finalizing it by how conditioned and reserved our thoughts are and so the memory and so the experiences by it. How world see through those conditioned thoughts acceptable by society and the reason why we can’t see change or can’t do anything to bring change.

Relationship– I loved author’s thought on how we treat outsider, how differently we react to unknown person based on the place and situation, how we start categorizing a new person on first meeting and ah my favorite a complex relationship with family and relatives. Another reason I loved this topic was, one of the reason of mess in my mind is related to relatives. I liked what was said in this chapter and it made me at least try to change my thought towards it.

Stepping out of time- title chapter was so beautiful. I loved the explanation of this topic by dream and physical and metaphysical experience. It was much more deep than I thought.

Other topics and examples that I also liked was gaming, gratitude, feeling, and plan A and B. I loved illustrations and poems were wow. It was very uplifting and inspiring. Like explained in the book energy of all self-help book is temporary, but I assure you energy of all books by Renée Paule will never leave you, they have permanent effect.

Overall, the book was so motivational and inspirational that it will make every single person to think over their life and help to change the way of thinking. It was more of philosophy than self-help that encourages to help yourself by changing perspective and observing yourself.

I would like to thank the author for sending me this book. I received 'Stepping out of time' from a giveaway during a vulnerable stage of my life. I was going through the loss of a loved one, abuse at my work and numerous events back to back sent my world spiralling. I decided to be brave and made a decision for change but through it i can't help but feel lost, depressed and uncertain of myself. This book provides a sense of self reflection and also perspective. I'll not get my answers from this book (I don't think thats the intention of the book) neither will I know where I'm going but it felt comforting that I'm not alone, and like everyone else I'm still on my journey to who knows where. As scary as it is for me, life is too short and I just got to keep moving forward.

As the editor of Renée Paule’s books I declare an interest in Stepping Out of Time and have not and will not be paid for my services.

Stepping Out of Time is not your usual ‘self-help’ offering. I’m not sure where to place this book for, like Renée’s others, it doesn’t fit exactly into any particular pigeon-hole, but rattles around disconcertingly in the mind making you take notice of it. I think that is exactly what it should do for Renée writes in her Introduction ‘There’s nothing in any of my books that we don’t already know...’ and she is quite right, but we have forgotten so much or have allowed it to be pushed out of sight and mind by more ‘important’ things. What you will find is a book written in what Renée calls ‘plain English’ (no jargon) with many delightful illustrations, a book that is a clarion call to stir ourselves; to take note of what is happening around us and to realise that we can effect change in our lives if we really want to. I heartily recommend this book to you.

I received an advanced copy of this book; the author is a friend of mine.

I love it ... just as I love all her books and I would say that if I didn't know her too. Great thinking and reflection.

First and foremost, i want to thank the author for sending me a copy of this book which, again, came in a moment i needed it.
I really appreciate the positive notes Renee has in all her books. I enjoyed reading this book as much as the others. What i loved most about it, is the fact she raises questions about all the aspects of our lives. It is an entire universe that gives you a purpose, the purpose being of finding out all the answers for yourself outside the book in your day to day life.
For me, this book was a beginning and a continuation of something i have to finish myself: to find the answers, and in this way never surrendering to depression and relax while realizing that i can give a great finish to all of the goals in my life.
For me this book was therapeutical and made me realize once more that we people tend to complicate things while instead we could take it more easy and be more gentle to our inner selves.
Thank you Renee for letting me know that i am worth something and that i have a purpose in my life on this Earth. ...ooohhhh and the illustrations are so enjoyable:)

I am glad to receive this book from the author. I started reading it, and I thought, Wow! This is what I really need right now.

Who are the authorities? Who is the Captain of the ship we are sailing in? What makes you 'you'? Like in all of her previous works, the author presents these soul-searching questions which lead you into rumination. Here I am in the library studying for my exams and some of the questions keep coming back knocking for answers and leave yet another set of unanswerable questions.

The author creates a powerful platform with simple words and bold ideas needed to break ground in life... To let the inner child out and relive life in an unadorned fashion. To really be able to open our eyes. To ask the deeper questions and to realise that it is okay not to know the answers.
The best part of this book is how the author uses metaphors to beautifully explain complex ideas which one can grasp easily.

It's a good book to open whenever you're a little short on inspiration or when you just want to have a better day.

Do not expect all the 'life is a fairy tale' stuff you read in other self help books. Rather it's a formula for how to live happily in this not-such-a-fairytale life.

This is an excellent book for those who are waking up and questioning the world around them. The author helps us to see beyond human conditioning by asking thought provoking questions about ourselves. Through a process of unlearning everything we've been taught and starting from the beginning the author helps us to venture into those dark recesses of our mind we would rather not think about but this is the journey we must take if we want to break free from thought conditioning and control. The book is richly illustrated and each chapter looks at a different facet of how we relate to the world around us always with the intent of challenging our limiting beliefs and having an open mind that things don't have to be the way they are

This book made me think differently about life and how to live it well by being ourselves and seeing our life realistically. As Renee sad herself - We need to be willing to stretch our minds rather than our muscles, and that's what the book did.

I recommend you reading it as stretching your mind! And to remind yourself that "We're not here to 'succeed' in this world... we're here to evolve and to transform ourselves.' Renee Paule

Renee Paule’s latest book, Stepping Out of Time, is the latest in her series of self-help works. As with the previous books, this one doesn’t hand out solutions to the constant mystery of daily life, but instead guides the reader to question for themselves the accepted ‘norms’ that tend to govern our behaviours and society. The book is also peppered with illustrations that help to crystallise the concepts being considered. It’s definitely not a book to read at a rush, because there is a need to allow time for the mind to absorb, question and explore its own understanding of the discussions offered. I wouldn’t say that this is an easy book to read because of the amount of self-reflection it will evoke in the reader, but that is also its purpose and strength. It’s refreshing to have an author who invites the reader to make their own opinions instead of burdening them with their own.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. This was the first self help style book I have ever read. I found the content very interesting. I am currently doing some reflecting on emotions and self observation and this book resonated with my current state. I found myself thinking "That's so true" or "I hadn't thought of it that way" many times while reading. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to make a change in their lives. It's an interesting perspective. It would be nice to have a bit of an explanation on how to start the self-observation process though.
