Tall – check.
Muscular – check.
Tatted – double check.
Until he opens his mouth.
Adam is grumpy, rude, and obnoxious as hell.
He’s the kind of guy who deserves double fisted middle fingers.
And I really should tell him exactly where he can shove his insults.
Instead, I bite my tongue.
He intrigues me and I can’t fight the need I have to find out what caused the pain so evident in his dark eyes.
Soon the thick hungry flames surrounding Adam consume me.
I should’ve known better.
Because when you play with fire, you’re bound to get burned.

This was an okay story I think what made me go meh was HOW SLOW it was even if Adam and Maddie had a insta connection.

Adam is Maddies new neighbor and she tries to introduce herself but he isn't having it he ignore and shoots her friendship down. Grumpy and cold that's what he is towards her and anyone even his own family at times. He's going though his own truama of loosing his wife and scars from the fire. What brings them together is Maddies hairless doggie Sheldon. He stole the show because he would always escape the house and just chill with Adam. It was rocky at first but they sorta became friends after that. Beside that friendship Maddie had her own problems dealing with her father and his dislike of her dancing and her dream of dancing.
Glad Adam was there to help her and lead a ear. I did get annoyed with the "mini break up" on why he didn't wanna go to the moms bday was It extreme on Adam yeah but I'm glad he changed his mind.

This was an enjoyable story of a grumpy man who has so many ghosts in his closet who meets his match with his next door neighbor. Through Maddie and her little rat of a dog seep their way through Adam's heart to show him that he is capable of second chances and love.

This was an emotional roller coaster ride. But it's not so heavy, it's light enough because there are still funny moments. Adam and Maddie's story is amazing and they have the perfect chemistry.

This is the first book I've read by the author, definitely going to read more of her books now.

A.K MacBride was a first time author for me and I’m not really sure if Slow Burn was a good first time book for me to see her writing abilities. Slow burn was definitely used in every sense…

Normally I don’t have any problems with slow burn books, but not only was it a slow burn, but I seem it was even slow getting to the issues at hand. It was so slow that I almost gave up several times. This was a enemies-to-lovers Insta-love, full of emotional torment and light humor romance.

I’m not really sure what didn’t work for me in this story, because it wasn’t the chemistry between Adam and Maddie, because that they had, and the plot was good when it finally got there and I felt their pain they both were experiencing, but there just was something missing for me to give this book a higher rating then I did. Maybe it was just me or the mood I was in, but again I just wasn’t really feeling it.

Audiobook review: Kelli Tager and Gregory Salinas both did a great job with the narration.

An emotional slow burn that triumphs into a true love story

Slow Burn is the second book in the Breathing Hearts series and is the story of Maddie and Adam. This story if one emotional roller-coaster that will whip you around, plunge you deep into heartbreak and then lift you high up to float on love clouds and bathe in sunshine. Maddie and Adam are well matched characters as they are both struggling with emotional turmoil and feelings of lose and unworthiness of love. But they are also different in that Adam is more of a "glass half empty" guy while Maddie is a bit more "glass half full" gal, at least when it comes to people, which makes for some interesting interactions between them. They end up sharing a really deep love and connection while also helping each other heal and learn that they each deserve a true love.

This is a really well written book with an emotionally deep story. The characters are well developed and have a lot of depth and range to them. This is not an instant love story but one that takes some time to develop and along the way is a wonderful read. Plus who hates a fugly dog that helps to bring these two together.

I’d already ARC’ed the book (Kindle) version of Slow Burn when A.K. MacBride graciously gifted me the audiobook in exchange for an honest review. My rating for the book was “5 stars isn’t enough – I’m dancing away from this book with endless healing stars!” I’ve upgraded this to a gazillion stars. And I’m not dancing away from anything because I’m still laying on the floor in a puddle of happiness. This audiobook is absolutely amazing!!! Kelli Tager and Gregory Salinas are a dream team. Their narration together was nothing short of perfection. They both expertly portrayed our sassy heroine Maddie and broody hero Adam. Their tone, pitch, pacing, and delivery were exemplary. I’m so glad they were cast for these roles. Their voices were very fitting for the main characters and really brought them to life. It was easy to tell they had an emotional connection to this story. This story represents its title very well because of the slow and intense angst and build up. The narrator’s ability to deliver all the delicious tension in this story was quintessential to make this a successful depiction of such a well written book. Kelli and Greg not only met that mark but kicked it to the curb and kept going. Trust me, you need this audiobook in your life!

Thank you to the author and Give Me Books Promotions for gifting me this amazing book in exchange for an honest review.
A.K. MacBride does it again! This story is full of guilt and self-doubt, but it’s also filled with learning to love yourself, starting over, and self-discovery. Maddie is so strong, independent, and caring. Adam is a broody alpha male. We start out the story with him full of anger and self-loathing. He’s suffered from an unimaginable tragedy and blames himself for the outcome. He lives with guilt. His scars and nightmares are a constant reminder of what happened and he doesn’t think he’s worth much now. Maddie sees the good in everyone. She shows Adam how important and amazing he truly is. She shows him that he is worthy of love. Maddie has her own demons and self-doubt to deal with. Both don’t really believe they are worthy of happiness, especially Adam. They’re both vulnerable and just going through the motion’s day by day instead of really living. It’s only through dancing that Maddie feels truly alive. Well, Maddie danced right into Adam’s life with the help of her fugly little dog Sheldon. Adam and Maddie both help each other find meaning in life. They help each other find love and forgiveness within their selves and others. And the chemistry… oh the chemistry! This story does the title justice. My Kindle was burning up from Maddie and Adam’s intense heat.

This is my favorite book from MacBride so far. She gave me so many feels. I felt every consuming emotion in my soul. There are a lot of readers out there that have suffered something tragic and life alternating. With this book MacBride shows us that no matter what happens in life, we are all worthy of happiness, love, empathy, and living life to our full potential. Thank you so much A.K. for letting me ARC this! You have outdone yourself!

“Your broken parts were made to fit mine.”

5 stars isn’t enough – I’m dancing away from this book with endless healing stars!

This book title is perfect!!💜

A.K. Macbride did a fantastic job with leaving you just on the edge, a lot! LOL This was at times, heartbreaking and yet sexy. This charming small town romance was so much fun and the chemistry was on fire. I was excited to see the connection between this story and book 1 Instant Heat. Sheldon absolutely won my heart.
The narration was fantastic. Both narrators absolutely nailed each character and really made me feel like I was a part of this story.
This is book 2 with an HEA and can be read as a standalone.
I highly recommend this book/series.

Loved it!

Not sure who I loved more… Adam or Sheldon. lol. This was a sweet, funny, heartwarming story with a little heart tossed in to spice it up. Maddie and Adam stole my heart. This was my first read by this author but won’t be my last. I’m going back to read book one, then I’ll be catching Frankie’s story!

wickedcoolflightReview at Wicked Cool Flight

A.K. MacBride is flying into your TBR with another small town, slow-burn romance that will break your heart into a million tiny pieces and force you to glue it back together one tiny fragment at a time.

Maddie is a dancer who tried to make it in the big time but failed. She's is stuck in the same spot after her dream crashed down around her. Working at her parent's hardware store, she feels unsupported. Her parents think that dance is a hope that will never come to fruition and can't understand why she can't leave it behind and grow up. You get her frustration and inability to feel like anything but a failure.

Nothing makes her happier than dancing. It's the one time she can express herself; all her doubts and insecurities mean nothing as long as she's moving. . Her grandmother left her a beachfront cottage.  A cottage that has a sexy new but grumpy neighbor. It's easy to imagine a picturesque sunrise on the beach and Maddy out there dancing her heart out and even easier to see Adam out there unable to look away.

Adam is not your typical brooding alpha male, which I always appreciate. Like most of A.K. MacBride's characters, he has a history that is full of pain and a lifetime of regrets. His wife died in a house fire and his last words with her were ruined by the fight they were having. As a trained firefighter, he arrived home in time to see the house engulfed and tried to save her but was unable to. Can you even imagine carrying that around the rest of your life? That failure has coated his every waking moment. His scars from the fire won't let him forget so he shuts everyone out. He moved to Clearwater Bay to get away from it all and to allow him to live without the pitying looks of his family and friends. Who wouldn't want to be a grumpy recluse after all that? Oh, but not in this story!

Separate, they are broken. Together, they might find happiness if they can get past the shattered pieces of their lives. Something has brought them together at the same place in time and if they can work through their pain, they might find something incredible. I always find myself rooting for the MCs of her love stories but man, she makes you inpatient for that HEA!

What I love about A.K. MacBride's stories is that the characters are so well developed from the first few pages. You get an immediate feel for who they are before you find out what their passions are and the challenges they face. Adam wears his scars on the outside for the world to see, but Maddie has the internal struggle. They are imperfect people struggling to find their way through the world. They have the same misgivings, insecurities, and apprehensions that plague us all. Her characters aren't perfect and they have shortcomings and broken dreams. Falling in love doesn't magically get rid of those problems. Sometimes it's one step forward and two steps back and that happy ever after you want so badly takes work...a lot of it.

There are some very heavy emotions to get through in this book, but there are some lighthearted ones as well. Maddie's dog, nicknamed Fugly by Adam, made for some hilarious moments. The stupid but sweet dog kept sneaking over next door until he wormed his way into Adam's heart. If nothing else, read it for Fugly!

I give Slow Burn 4 out of 5 propellers! Lots of great chemistry and a swoon-worthy romance.

Maddie is trying to figure out life after failing to reach her dream. She has returned home in disgrace and is working in her parent’s home repair store. The one great thing about returning home? Being able to live in one of her grandmother’s homes. A home that she kept secret but is perfect for the outsider that is Maddie. What is even better? The view from her windows…and I am not just talking about the beach. No, the hot new neighbor really brightens up things and it doesn’t really matter that he is nothing more than a hot grump.

Adam has moved away from the life he had built because of all of the memories. He needed to find a way to move on and forget about the torture that befell him with his failure to save her. He has never been “Mr. Personality” but ever sense the fire, he has grown even more separate from his previous world. It is not until a “Fugly” creature shows up in his yard that things start to change. His beautiful neighbor keeps pulling him in and soothing his soul in ways he never could have imagined.

A.K. MacBride is a new-to-me-author. I like the story she put together and will continue to read her books as they come out. There are a couple of issues that pulled me out of the story, though. The main sticking point for me with the story is that there are a lot of character issues that really needed more evolution, if that makes sense. I wanted to see more (and maybe we will in the following books) about how Adam is able to overcome his past traumas. And the family issues of Maddie? Those too, needed a little more. Again, these are issues for me that might not be for others. That being said, I will be checking out Wild Fire, when it releases, because those issues weren’t enough to push me away, rather they brought me out of the story. Overall, this was a cute, mostly happy, HEA!

Duel pov. Age gap but like not really talked about. Neighbors. He’s grumpy and closed off she’s sunshine. He used to be a firefighter until something traumatic happened. She works at her families hardware store until she gets an opportunity to work at her old dance studio. Like the title says slow burn. Nothing happens between them till 63%. I really enjoyed it though just wish we got more of them actually being together.

Adam Carlisle moved to Clearwater Bay to escape his past, and the pain that he carries with him after one fateful night. After years of pushing his family and best friend away, and self loathing in his pain and misery, he starts on a course he never saw coming.

Madison "Maddie" Young loves to dance, but when she crashed and burned she returned home go Clearwater Bay and started to work at her parents hardware store. All she has ever wanted was the love and support her family and never understood why her father was so cold towards her.

Adam does out if his way to ignore his neighbor Maddie until Sheldon her dog gives him no choice. With a few escapes from Sheldon, Adam had no choice but to talk to Maddie. But what Adam doesn't see coming is a punch to his gut when Maddie let's him know just how grumpy he is. So when the sparks fly their is no denying the chemistry. But can Adam and Maddie find a way to heal them self and to heal each other?

This book is by far the best book ever from A.K MacBride. My dearest friend, my lovely you have out done your self and I am in awe of you. This book brought laughter, tears, and joy.

Lovely. When the book first started I couldn't imagine how Adam and Maddie were going to find their way to happily ever after, but being proven wrong has never been such a spellbinding experience before! You really sympathise with the characters, and I also found the subplot around Maddie and her father really touching. A slow burn, and worth it!

Perspective can be a game changer...
by and1515

Madison didn't see anything wrong with admiring the scenery out her bedroom window she may have even decided she was done with the male species.
However taking her bestie's advice she tried to be neighberly only to have the rug yanked rudely out from under her.
That man was the epitome of rudniess and all she did was try to be polite.
Funday Sundays and endless alcoholic joy in a glass.
Unfortunately Mondays arrive way to soon and I'm having to deal with the lasting effects from the day before.
Unlike my sister who has all her ducks in a row my life isn't.
But I'm seriously trying yet I truly suspect my parents wished I was more like her.
There's nothing like my good friend to chase away the terror that haunts me night after night.
My family tried to help me but I couldn't stay in the same territory where my pain came to life.
Apparently my next door neighbor owns a wonky looking four legged creature that wouldn't leave.
Yeah I'm talking to my little buddy about our new neighbor who is the dreamest man on two legs then he opened his mouth and totally ruined it.
I choose my new abode not for any of those normal reasons most people would; no I choose it because it was broken as I am.
Evidently my next door neighbor's ball of fluff didn't listen very well when she warned him to stay away from me so now it was my turn to return the favor.
My dreams where a waste of time to my parents and nothing I say or do will ever change their small minds.
At one time I would have told you my next door neighbor was a grumpy rabid porcupine only to finally realizes he wasn't.
From the first time I quietly spied on her Maddie slowly but surely whirled her way into my life.
I've reduced myself to living as a prickly hermit and the mere thought of walking out my door makes me nervous.
However my girl deserves so much more then a wounded grumpy man like me.
I need to be courageous so that I can show her just how much she truly means to me.

Emotional, unimaginable, forgiving and inspiring all words I would use to describe Slow Burn. Adam has suffered unimaginable loss and has blamed himself for years. He finally tries to move on only to have a neighbor with a Fugly dog🤣

Who knew that that fugly dog would forever change his life?? That poor little ugly dog brings him back to life and to Maddie. Maddie is awe struck with Adam when she meets him. She looks past his scars and into his heart and that is so endearing. They help each other realize what’s most important in their lives and move beyond their pasts with love & forgiveness.

"You know I wouldn't change a thing about you, right?" Maddie smoothed her hand over the left side of my chest. "Your broken parts were made to fit mine."—-Maddie’s sentiments so sweet & raw. Her love for Adam brought him back to a life he loves💕

This is an interesting and intriguing story. You have a full of anger, moody and broody alpha male and a strong independent female who is also caring. These two have met their match and find purpose, healing and meaning in life. Adam and Maddie are great with loads of chemistry. This story is chopped full of emotion and what a journey. I love every bit of their story and love how it develops.

Adam is a man that has been through a terrible thing in his life and it has permanently left scars on the inside as well the outside. He is a broody guy that can’t run from his past, the guilt, and anger. So, when he moves to a new to town to try to start over, he never expects Maddie his overly cheerful neighbor to break down the walls he has created. Maddie is a sweetheart that wants to follow her passion in dance but with her family not supporting her she feels as if she as if her dreams will never come true, but she is hopeful and caring. Maddie somehow starts to break down Adam’s moody demeanor and they slowly build a friendship of sorts and things seem to be going well but will Adam’s insecurities and demons that haunt him always stand in the way of what could possibly be more for them? I loved their story and seeing Adam slowly get life back in him while Maddie started chasing her dreams.

Slow Burn by A.K. MacBride is an enemies-to-lovers romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Kelli Tager and Gregory Salinas.

This is the second book in the Breathing Hearts series and can be read as a standalone.

This is the third book of A.K.'s that I have read and its definitely won't be my last. I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I loved the relationship that bloomed between Adam and Maddie.

I can't wait for the next book in the series Wild Fire to be released on October 28, 2021 so I can get Frankie's story.

Kelli and Gregory did an amazing job on the narration. They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.

I would highly recommend this book if you love enemies-to-lovers romance, contemporary romance or age gap romances.

“Your broken parts were made to fit mine.”
Can this quote BE any more swoon inducing?! (I’m channeling my inner Chandler Bing) Wow... just wow! What an amazing story! After being introduced to Adam in Instant Heat I knew this was going to be an intense read. Slow Burn gives you all of the emotions! Adam has been through Hell and back. You can’t blame him for being so shut down and dark inside. I just want to cry for the broken man and everything he was dealing with. Maddie was a surprise for sure. She was dealing with her own demons, she just hid them better with her bright smile and cheerful attitude. She’s such a lovable character and I just wanted to hug her. Watching Adam and Maddie dance around each other and to see their relationship grow and blossom was beautiful. How can we not root for the couple who deserves some damn happiness in their lives? Their chemistry is off the charts and their slow burn (see what I did there?) romance felt so organic. I love that Maddie always saw Adam for who he was inside, even when Adam didn’t believe anyone could see past the “monster” exterior. You need to read this book! It deals with trauma and it’s devastating effects but there is also hope and love. Laugh out loud moments interspersed with skin tingling steam. Maddie is a strong sassy character that you want as a real life best friend. Throw in Sheldon the lovable but “fugly” dog and of course grumpy but very yummy Adam and you get a book that is the total package! I couldn’t put it down! Great job A.K.

I was graciously given this book an an ARC from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was not the right book for me. Everything was over the top dramatic and I didn't think that the characters acted realistically. One of them in particular needed a therapist far more than he needed a love life. It was hard to root for the main character, as I didn't get a good idea of how she struggled. She wants to dance, but it's hard to see the effort she put into becoming one. When something good happens, it's because it falls into her lap. When she wants to fix things with her family, it's because they come and talk to her not because of any action on her part.

The writer does a good job at giving the two main characters their own voices so when the perspective switches back and forth, it's not confusing. I also thought that the chemistry between Adam and Maddie was good.

I enjoyed this enemies to friends romance story. This is a new author for me which I enjoyed being pulled into the story from the beginning by the characters. I look forward to seeing what is next for this author. The author’s use of details gave the story not only a realistic feel but also made it come to life. I enjoyed how the characters are connectable and made the story engaging. This is a fast paced story that I had a hard time putting down. It is an easy, fun and entertaining story. There is a new neighbor in the neighborhood. He is hot, steamy but he is also full of attitude and rude. How hot will things get with these characters? Will someone get burned? I enjoyed the growth and chemistry throughout the story. I really enjoyed this story and what the characters brought to the story. I highly recommend this book.

Slow Burn is the second book in the Breathing Hearts series by A.K MacBride. This is the first book that I have read by Ms. MacBride, so I was interested to see what she had to offer. I like a good slow burn romance and the premise sounded quite promising, so I soon found myself with a copy of my own, ready to explore between the covers.
What I found was a wonderful story full of emotion, self-doubt, pain, starting over, self-discovery, chemistry, sizzle, romance, and hope.
Adam hides his pain behind a gruff and grumpy exterior. His past is a painful burden that weighs heavily on his soul. Maddie’s dreams of a career in dancing- but has gotten a little stuck in her small-town life. Adam pushes people away using rudeness as a way of ensuring no one gets too close. But he wasn’t prepared for the spark of life that Maddie brings into his stagnant and moody world. Will Maddie be able to break down his defences enough to take a chance on love? Or will insecurity, pain, and self-doubt destroy any possibility of happiness?
Like I said earlier, this is a slow burn romance- and at times this story felt extra slow. There were moments of frustration where I wanted to shake these two and tell them to get their act together. But thankfully this didn’t detract too much from my overall enjoyment of the story.

Thank you, A.K MacBride!

Madison is back in her hometown after a failed attempt of a dancing career in the big city, living in her inherited house with her dog Sheldon. Next door the very grumpy firefighter Adam moves in. He is hiding from everyone, living in guilt and distancing himself.

Adam is your typical hero (tragic past, tattoos, muscles, antisocial but hot) and acts like a jerk, especially to people that loves him. He is really struggling with his past and Madison with her present.

Sheldon brings them together, becoming friends with a underlying lust for each other that soon leads to more.

”I don't mind your eyes on me," I confessed roughly.
The moment the words left my lips, her gaze tracked up the tattoo on my right arm, over my shoulder and settled on my mouth for a long, hot second. "Good," she finally said when her eyes met mine, "because I don't think I can stop looking.”

I struggled with the dialogue and sometimes found it a bit cringe-worthy 😬 It was too much for my taste and didn’t feel realistic but more awkward
This book was very safe and low key on the drama - something that is quite comfortable sometimes 🤷🏻‍♀️

- Easy read
- No cheating or OW/OM drama
- Dual POV
- Triggers: Death of spouse

She sees him
This was a wonderful book to read! So emotionally heartbreaking and full of respect and love.

Adam lost his wife when their house burned down. He, as a firefighter, should have been able to save her anyway. But a beam from the ceiling fell on him and when he wakes up he is in a hospital wearing the scars from his shortcomings.

Maddie tries to give substance to her life after a dance career ends in nothing. Back in her hometown, she works in her parents shop who thought her dancing career was nothing more than a hobby. The feelings of disappointment define her. She hates it.
The house next to her has a new occupant, but he doesn't want to see and know her, even when she wants to introduce herself to him like good neighbors do.
And although Adam doesn't want to know about her, he notices her when he sees her dancing on the beach.
Slowly but surely cracks appear in the wall he has built around his heart, until they collapse.

A beautiful, realistic, emotionally and painful story. Where the power of love heals the wounds of his and her past

I listened to the audiobook narration by Greg Salinas and Keli Tager

You are going to go through so many emotions with this book. Both Maddie and Adam have some serious issues they have to deal with and this story shows us that trusting your heart and healing does happen especially when we let others in.

This series focuses on fire fighters and I’m loving it.

Adam moves into town and I giggled at how Maddie and Frankie stalk and spy on him at the start of the book. He’s a tortured soul dealing with tremendous life changing issues and wants to just be left alone or does he? Maddie is living a life she desperately wants to kick in the dust and dreams of dancing but fights her family who wishes she would not pursue her dreams.

There’s so many emotions that I went through with this audiobook.

I giggled, I cringed, I was frustrated at times and I swooned as well.

A.K. McBride is a fabulous writer who shows us life and all of the emotions that make us who we are and I really suggest that you dive into her books.

Gregory Salinas was prefect as Adam, he shows such depth in expressing all of the emotions that Adam dealt with and his ability to change characters is awesome as well.

Keli Tager was also awesome and her Maddie showcases her ability to become the characters in her performance.

Awesome book, can’t wait for the next one.
