David Wolf #3

Alive and Killing

Rate this book
After months of slogging through murky meltwaters of the Rockies, and even murkier small-town politics, Colorado cop David Wolf is enjoying a well-deserved camping trip with his son. But after an eerie encounter on the trail, Wolf suspects their father-son outing has taken a turn for the worse.

Unfortunately, he's dead right.

When news of Wolf and his son's disturbing episode travels through the valleys, local FBI agents want "in" on Wolf's investigation, hoping to halt murder and corruption originating 7,000 miles away in Afghanistan. Wolf ignores the FBI's order to stand down, even if the case involves a matter of national security. Not when his son's safety is at stake.

In this stomach-dropping third installment of the David Wolf series, Wolf partners with a beautiful FBI agent —whether she likes it or not—to bust an inter-continental conspiracy threatening anyone who has the bad luck to stumble on it.

Sheriff Wolf goes camping in the mountains with his son and winds up trying to keep his young son from being killed by a group of men chasing them. The interaction between father and son is really moving.

In a sleepy ski resort county in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, the book starts with a bang and then settles into a face-paced adventure. An international robbery has put Wolf, his son and many of the residents of his community in danger. The FBI gets involved, and there are bad guys everywhere.

If you start with this one or any of the books in the series I suspect you’ll get hooked.

The author, Jeff Casron, continues to entertain and keep me looking forward to the next book. This is book three of the series, Alive and Killing. I love the characters, the settings, and the story.

Again, good story but the writing is subpar. I thought we had turned the corner on the writing when the book began. I was pretty hooked, then it went straight downhill. I just don’t understand the high ratings. I think this is my last book from Carson.

This is a good example of a short crime mystery novel, with an interesting location for the setting - Colorado. Our protagonist has less than a year on the job as sheriff of a small mountain town, but his former military background is impressive. His former wife shares custody of their 12 year old son. A plot to steal gold from Afghanistan and fly it out in a military aircraft develops, and eventually it leads right back to sleepy Colorado. This isn't a great book, but it is entertaining. Three stars. More in the same series if you are interested.

There were a lot of characters to keep track of in this one. Thank goodness for x-ray on Kindle.

This was the best book in the series so far. Sherif David Wolf is having some down time in the wilderness with his son, Jack, when they are thrust into a nightmare. First they meet a man hurrying along the trail who seem terrified but won't talk to them. Later they hear shots, then they are fighting and running for their lives. Who are these people? And what do they want with him and Jack? Naturally Wolf wants to find the killers before they come after Jack and him again. Its a cat and mouse game with deadly consequences. Very tense, a good read.

This is the third book in the four-book collection I bought for my kindle and so far I've really liked them. For some reason, I usually don't read all the books in a collection at once, but I wanted to read more so I went from one to the next. The characters are interesting and seem realistic and the stories (all fairly short) are fast-moving. I've read the fourth one before I got around to reviewing this one and it's also good, though less fast-moving. I'll be surprised if my husband doesn't also like them.

More like 2.5 stars than just 2. I mean, I liked it, but not all that much. The plot was interesting enough, and I liked the interplay between the characters. But, underlying it all, I had an overall sense that everything was just too contrived. Assumptions made on inexplicable vagaries that are almost always proven to be factual become annoying when they happen again and again.

Disappointing

This is the third book I have read in the series. It was disappointing. Not much of a mystery and very predictable. Big handsome guy serif and hot female FBI agent

Afganistani Gold in a Colorado Paradise

Sheriff David Wolf, back on top and running Sluice County Sheriff Department, is about to get his family involved in a nasty set of circumstances.

From deep within the Afganistani caves of Tora Bori, where Osama bin Laden masterminded his organization, a secret emerges.

While David Wolf and his son Jack are hiking in the mountains, they encounter a bizarre backpacker, obviously struggling with the weight of his pack. He is also under the influence of something or just plain crazy as he threatens the two of them.

Bouncing back and forth between intelligence from David's time in the service, information from the stunning FBI special agent Luke, and the suspicious activities of Colorado's own Law enforcement, the danger quickly builds.

Shots fly, people die, heart's are broken and plots are broken open. Zipping towards the climax of the story, treasure from ancient times is found, brothers and sisters are torn apart but ultimately, good prevails over evil.

Alive and Killing is yet another triumphant mystery thriller from Jeff Carson. I'm so far hooked now, I'm sure I'll be reading all of the books in the series.

David got his dream job as sheriff of Sluice County Colorado in book two where he was framed for murder after he failed to take a high-paying job designed to get him out of the way while local millionaire mining company owner got rid of the bodies of a family he killed so he could take their land. David's father was killed when he got too close to that truth. David settled it all in book two which brings us to book three.

David and son are out on a camping trip only to be shot at by a mysterious stranger for reasons unknown. I think this might be the only real plot hole I've noticed so far. There was no reason for these guys to go after David and his son other than pure paranoia, which people get, but these guys should have it more together. Anyway, this kicks off an entire investigation into missing service men.

Obviously more to it than that but I don't want to spoil it. Seriously, these stories so far have had a member of David's family either shot at or dead. I'm not sure I want to read book four. I probably will, but I hate it when the detective's family are mixed up in the case. So far, that's all I've gotten here.

What is better than a little father-son bonding time hiking and camping the Rocky Mountains? Sprinkle in some rifle shots when it is pitch dark and being spooked by an extreme hiker who is clearly disturbed by either what he is carrying or who is after him. David Wolf, the now town sheriff, is confronted by some people in the mountains and he and his son then become the hunted. While they escape that evening, the hunt doesn't end. FBI gets involved as there are links to group of men with ties back to their military days in Afghanistan. Wolf stays close to the investigation since the suspects begin to search for his son, who shot one of them and can identify them. The FBI closes in on the group and finds all the motives linking the military group to this small town in Colorado. Inside support?? possibly, and Wolf and his loyal team are there to support!

Great book in the series with exciting storyline that does not disappoint on the suspense. I really enjoy reading these David Wolf series, since they go so quickly as I cannot put them down. Great read and definitely recommend.

The third book in this series focused on Wolf and his son, Jack. It is an extraordinary story about the lengths this father will go to in order to protect his child.

This fast-paced suspense story captures you from the beginning and holds you hostage until the last page is read. The descriptions of Rocky Point, Colorado and the surrounding area are so well-written that I can visualise the forests, mountains and locations where the action all takes place. The characters are well-developed, likeable and I am getting to know them, pretty soon they will be like old friends. There are so many twists and turns that sometimes, you might not know which way is up. Just when you think you have the whole thing figured out, another clue was cleverly revealed. I am very much enjoying Mr. Carson's writing style — it is unlike any author I have read in this genre in a l-o-n-g time!

A fun, easy read about Sheriff David Wolf. This time, Wolf is attacked while camping with his twelve year old son and he aims to get to the bottom of it. With the help of surrounding counties and an FBI agent, Wolf is tracking information about a missing special ops team in Afghanistan that may have been involved in the attack at the campsite. Jeff Carson set this one up for an amazing finish at the end as a hostage is taken and the good guys track the bad guys into the woods for, what should have been, an awesome action scene! But in actuality it simply ended. The scene literally just ended. Like Carson ran out of time and fast-forwarded to finish up. I don't want to drop any spoilers, but you'll see what I mean if you read it and I still recommend you do. Jeff!! Dude!! If you set up an awesome grand finale then give us the grand finale!!!

Jeff Carson does it again with Book 3 of the tales of David Wolf. We get to discover more about his son Jack. There is a possibility of a love interest, no, not his ex-wife Sarah although Jack is still hoping for this. What I enjoy about this series, is that each story so far has been different and told from a different angle. There's maturity in the writing, language and form while keeping his writing style. It's easy reading, fast-paced and the characters come to life. The new deputy, Patterson, has Rachette on his toes with another onion layer peeled back to reveal the depth of Rachette's character and his loyalty to Wolf. I really would like the characters to be more human instead of drop-dead gorgeous but that's me, I'm not into perfect and perfectionism bores me.

Wolf Takes his son on a camping trip to a particular spot that Wolf loves. It can only be reached by hiking many miles in the rough. On the way they encounter a strange man who seems to be running from some one or something. They are curious about the man but proceed hiking. when they finally reach the fishing spot and begin to set up camp, they are fired on from afar. Then the mystery begins. Who and what have they stumbled upon. Then the race is on. The plot thickens beyond belief and then it can become confusing. I enjoyed the story line but I did find some of the timeliness rather impossible. Places far away for some characters to get to, seem to be a lot closer for others. But it is a novel so sometimes anything goes.

The story was mediocre.

HOWEVER, discussions surrounding Luke’s background disgusted me. As a lesbian myself, mentioning lesbianism as a “phase” is disgusting and reinforces harmful stereotypes. Having her say “I’m better now” when Wolf notices a photo on her wall of Luke dressed in stereotypical LGBTQ outfits is disgusting. (A short hairstyle and a flannel shirt.) You can say that someone had a rough upbringing and that they rebelled in university without dragging lesbians into it as a crutch.

Continuing into what made me mad about this book is the way men are described to look at the women, specifically Luke and Patterson. The first thing the men notice is their bodies, and it frankly does not need to be discussed nor does it aid the plot in ANY way.

Do better.

I started this book last night and finished it tonight. Fast paced action hits every time you think it is slowing down. Wolf has had enough action and is taking his son, Jack camping to the special place he used to go with his Dad. However, their guy time was disturbed by the site of a man face planting himself with an overloaded backpack making it nearly impossible for him to get up. He was terrified and kept looking behind him. When questioned by Wolf he wouldn't admit anything. Wolf is uneasy and they head on up to their campsite. Barely there, they hear gunshots and a few minutes later an armed gunman is behind Wolf. This is just the beginning of danger for Wolf and Jack.

Intriguing

I am thoroughly enjoying this David Wolf series. Alive and Killing has followed in the footsteps of the first two books keeping a cohesive feel throughout the series.

David Wolf is not portrayed as a "super soldier" turned law enforcement officer, and I applaud that. He is a smart man who loves his family and excels at being the Sluice County Sheriff..and just happened to be a Ranger. He fast became a favorite of mine because he is well written.

This series is worth at least giving it a try. And if you love it, like I do, there are thirteen books in the series. I love a long series, especially when the writing is this enjoyable.

I usually enjoy reading mystery series set in a different part of the country than where I live. The David Wolf series, set in Colorado, has lots of natural beauty to offset the crimes that author Carson depicts. This time around, Alive and Killing, the third novel in the series, is a bit plodding without the wonders of an isolated natural setting. The protagonist, David Wolf, is a sheriff who takes great pride in his fractured family and in this entry his young son, Jack, is in danger. There is nothing more dangerous to a criminal than a determined dad with skills.

Although I did not enjoy this title has much as the others I have read, I will stick with this series.

I'm glad this one was better than book 2. I almost stopped the series after 2.

This one was okay. Better story line than either of the first two-- It's a little annoying that Wolf is still doing whatever he wants to solve a crime, pulling guns on people, breaking into places, etc. I don't like the way he treats Agen Luke overall, its like he's trying to be to "alpha male" and needs to conquer her. :\

That being said, the mystery was okay, and I'm pretty much in love with the narrators voice. I bought this in a 4 pack, so I'll finish the 4th one and then move to something else for a bit. Not my favorite series.

Just for a day, Colorado Sheriff David Wolf trades slogging through murky meltwaters and even murkier small-town politics for an overnight camping trip in the wilderness with his son. What should be a bonding time with his son in the mountain wilderness, becomes a strange encounter with a man on the path, then being held at gun-point in their camp. A harrowing escape down the mountainside while be shot at doesn't end the encounter. The men responsible have ties all the way back to gold from Afghanistan.

Great!

Two weeks ago my husband (and fellow avid mystery reader) suggested that I should try the David Wolf series. He said it did have a strong masculine voice, good geographical references and a deep plot. Well, I just finished my third book and more than agree but must say that the characters are well developed and the introduction of two females into the plot does diversify and strengthen my personal link to the plot. The author is a wonderful addition to our 'mystery club members such as Parker, Tapply, Craig and newcomer Brad Parks'. Thank you Mr Carson!

Alive and Killing

This is my 3rd Jeff Carson book in the David Wolf series to read. David and FBI agent Luke are definitely on a suspenseful mission trying to figure out who was responsible for shooting David while he was on a camping trip with his son. A lot of searching and trying to unravel how agent Luke's brother ties in to everything and because David's son saw and shot one of the men they encountered at the campgrounds trying to keep him from being killed. I'm no good at writing reviews but the David Wolf series is enjoyable and entertaining.

My favorite of the series so far. My biggest issue with the first two books was the story took too long to get going. I understand the necessary set up for the mystery, but those took 80-100 pages just to finally take off. Alive and Killing jolts right at the fifteen page mark. The new characters were fantastic additions, and the story was significantly more thrilling than the previous two. Lacking in the actual mystery department, but I’m fine with that given the final result. The best of the series so far!
