So I picked up this duet based on the fact alone that Laurelin Paige is the same author who created Donovan Kincaid and wrote the Filthy Rich Duet (also, the cover looks a bit spicy, if you know what I mean) now, if you have read the Filthy Rich Duet, you would know how crazy that book was and how psychotic Donovan Kincaid IS— I wouldn't say that I was a HUGE fan of that duet because obviously it had issues, but for some reason I don't know it stuck with me and if you erase few traits from Donovan's personality, he was basically my fictional type, but I guess making him how he was actually was the whole point. Anyways, so before getting into this book, I thought this duet would be similar to that duet, however it wasn't which is a good thing because that meant I was getting new content to read. However, this new content was just not my cup of tea.
I don't even have to go into details for this review because the entire plot of this duet can be summed up into one sentence and that is rich playboy falls for a poor ambitious girl who has a secret. the end. Usually, I do not mind reading low on drama stories because they really do save up time and energy, but sometimes it's tiring to read the same underwhelming plots that really have no structure and are just plain boring. I would have liked this book better even if it had less drama and just consisted of the development between Scott Sebastian and Tess' relationship, but even their relationship felt so plain therefore, they could not capture my attention for so long. Honestly, they had nothing interesting going on for them. (Also, this could be just a me thing because I'm actually having a hard time liking any book these days, I don't even know why, but I hate it here. 😩)
Just going to end this review by saying that the whole plot was basically focused on Scott trying to seduce Tess and Tess "trying" her best to resist Scott's advances which was really a poor attempt on her behalf because homegirl barely made it through their first meeting so I don't know why she was even bothering to resist him at all cause girlll we knew she had already fallen for him on page one so she really thought she was doing something, I don't know what though. And, honestly, I don't really know what happened from the 50% mark and towards the end because I was barely paying attention to what I was reading.. 🤐😂 Anyways, hopefully better luck next time with a new series.
‘He raised his glass, his grin triumphant, as though he’d won some game I hadn’t been aware we’d been playing, except of course I knew what game we were playing, and of course he won because I always lost the stay-away-from-the-hot-guy game.’
‘Scott was difficult, but he wasn’t impossible.
Even if he had hypnotic blue eyes. And charming banter. And irresistible lips.
God, I was so screwed.’
‘Perfection. That’s exactly what it was. His speed, his angle, his girth, his length. The way he hit that exact right spot. Each. And. Every. Time. The way he called me Tessa, and the way he smiled when he saw me, and the way his eyes lit up when they met mine.’
‘“Scott?” I hadn’t spoken loudly, but my voice felt big in the darkness. “Why didn’t you want to give me the spiel earlier? The don’t get attached, this is all just for fun spiel?” I really needed to hear it at the moment.
He paused so long that I thought he’d fallen asleep. I was pretty close to slumber myself.
“I think…” he said finally, my eyes startling open. Silence followed. Then, “I really, really like you Tessa Turani.”
I stopped worrying right then that I’d lose my heart to the guy.
I realized I already had.’
