Rate this book
A bloodthirsty siren. A spellbound selkie. A vindictive witch… And a fiery redhead from Nashville willing to take them all on.

Kaia has finally decided to put her parents’ house on the market and let go of the memories it holds, but she didn’t bargain for the secrets she uncovers there. Her whole world changes when she’s plunged into a storm on the Atlantic with Sam, the enigmatic fisherman she just met at the bar. As they fight for their lives, Kaia discovers she’s a siren, and Sam finds himself ready to break all his own rules for her.

Though giving in to her instincts is easy—both in the ocean and in bed—the battle between her siren and human selves takes Kaia to the very edge of who she thinks she is. In the water, she spars with a merciless, territorial siren who wants something she can’t give. On land, Sam reveals his own secrets to Kaia, including a curse that looms over him—a curse that could take him from her forever.

2.5 - ⭐️⭐️💫

The synopsis of Under the Surface immediately captivated me, the first line says ”A bloodthirsty siren. A spellbound selkie. A vindictive witch... And a fiery redhead from Nashville willing to take them all on.” that immediately hooked me... however... you can tell by the rating that I didn’t like this much.

Let me simplify it by listing all the likes and dislikes

Likes:
• The author’s writing style
• Fast pacing
• Minor fantastical elements intertwined with the modern world

Dislikes
• Rushed story
• Soppy insta-love romance
• Finding no connection with the characters
• Characterization with no depth
• Unexplored fantasy elements
• Annoying villain
• Barely any thrilling action

That’s about it.

Before I start this review, let me say that I am so glad I got the chance to read this. I thank Instagram for connecting me with so many bloggers, reviewers, and authors. One of those is Sonya Blake.

I received this book for review purposes. This does not, in any way, affect my rating.

I don't read enough paranormal romance and I'm wondering why. The ones I do pick up I end up really liking. But they typically involve vamps or werewolves or even ghosts. Never have I read one involving a siren, a selkie, and a skinwalker.

Yes, you heard right.

After a bad breakup, Kaia moves from the south to the east coast where she plans to sell her parent's home. But before she settles in, she meets Sam, a fisherman. After an accident sends them both plunging into the Atlantic, Kaia discovers that she's a siren. And f87k-boy Sam finds himself falling for her.

In the midst of a steamy (I can't wait to tell you about the sexy scenes OMG) romance, Kaia finds herself in a battle with a local siren clan while Sam confronts his own secrets. Both fights could rip these two apart if they let it.

I can't remember the last time I fell in love with a book couple. I mean, I'm rooting for these two, to the ends of the earth BUT LIFE WANTS TO KEEP THEM APART AND I CANNOT STAND IT. UGH. The romance was sweet, not insta-love per se, but way steamier than Maas or Ward could ever put to words. I mean, this one scene...and then this other one....and then THAT ONE.

Well-written, impressive characters, drool-worthy sex scenes, extreme power plays, an antagonist to truly hate, this book is for anyone who likes J.R Ward, Patricia Briggs, and Charlaine Harris, to name a few that come to mind. I definitely think everyone should give Kaia and Sam a try.

Under the Surface was a delightful surprise, and it sucked me into the pages in minutes. The story starts with Kaia, who has moved to a new town after she has lost both her job and boyfriend. The book starts out as dual POV (there will be a third later on), and Kaia soon meets Sam, a fisherman. I found myself rooting for them from the beginning. There was a spark between them right away, and the chemistry was on point (you guys know how much I love chemistry!).

One night they are caught in a storm while on Sam's ship, and they both end up in the sea, threatening to drown. Kaia manages to save him and brings him to an alcove. There, she discovers her legs have disappeared; in its place is a scaled tail. From this point on, both Sam and Kaia undergo a whirlwind of activities, and my heart pounded throughout the book for them.

I enjoyed the writing style, and how the characters struggle and grow into finding their beliefs and norms. Their adventure was gripping, and I enjoyed every second of it!

This book was everything! I rooted for the main characters from the beginning, and my feelings only became stronger throughout the story. This book was packed with both action and love, and it was exceptionally well-written. I especially loved that writing style!

Well, who would have thought it? Another fantastic and fun #paranormalromance book by an incredibly talented new author! 2020 has been challenging for many reasons, but I love that I've opened my eyes new genres I would have originally passed by because "they weren't for me." Thank you so much to Sonya for taking a chance on me and sending a {gifted} copy of #UnderTheSurface.

Let's start off with the characters. It took me a little bit of time to wrap my head around them being both human and animal ... and then I reminded myself that was the purpose of the book. Kaia can turn into a mermaid (or Siren) and Sam is a Selkie (seal). Have to admit, the seal seemed a little less "relatable" than a mermaid, but I still really enjoyed both of the characters separately and as a couple. The crazy part? When human, they seemed TOTALLY NORMAL. I guess you can compare it to shapeshifting from other novels and it was written very well.

Another fun element was bringing a witch into the mix - who used her powers to control people for the wrong reasons. She was a loveable, but hateable character, considering I really enjoyed the romance between Kaia and Sam. Speaking of romance - this book is STEAMY. If you do not like explicit sex scenes or sultry language, you probably won't connect with this book. It's also something you may want to read in private, as there were multiple times that I visibly flushed after finishing a chapter. Talk about HOT!

I think this book is a perfect catalyst to a series (and I hope that's what you're planning)! I want a bit more character development and I certainly need to understand what happens with Kaia and Sam. If you're a huge fan of fantasy and paranormal romance, I definitely suggest you pick this up. It was a very quick and enjoyable!

Huge thanks to Sonya Blake for letting me review her book Under the Surface. It was AMAZING. I love paranormal romances and this one did not disappoint.

Our story begins with Kaia who moves back to Quolobit Harbor to sell her childhood home. She is down on her luck so she is hoping for a change. She quickly meets Sam who she instantly connects with. They form a friendship which turns into something more.

As they become closer they both discover very unique secrets about each other such as Kaia is a siren while Sam is a selkie. I have always been fascinated with water mythology since I was little girl. Adding this mythology made me love the story so much more. I was intrigued about how Kaia and Sam would navigate their relationship with so many obstacles to overcome.

Their obstacles take a turn for the worse when Sam’s ex lover is actually a witch or skinwalker who plans to keep him all to herself. Not only do they have to find out what Violet is up to, Kaia must deal with her transition of being a siren and everything that entails including some very angry sirens.

The story was fascinating. I couldn’t put it down. It was very quick paced. Blake kept throwing so many conflicts at you and you just want to devour the book to find out what happens. I can’t wait for the next one. Definitely buy this one on June 28. I know I will! I can’t wait to add the paperback to my collection.

Sonya has created a unique world of all things under the sea. I have to say normally I steer clear of these kinds of shifter stories. I had a bad experience and it scarred me. However Sonya really did a great job of laying a solid foundation from the start with detailed scenes and relatable characters that just intrigued me.

The original concept and uniqueness drew me in right away but the wanting/needing more is what kept me reading. I'm all about that suspenseful anticipation.

Kaia and Sam's journey is a crazy rollercoaster of twists and surprises. Its frustrating and angsty but it's also sweet and fiery. The climactic build and heart pounding chemistry has you in all kinds feels. The building tensions and crazy happenings have you on edge waiting for what's to come and it doesn't disappoint. however it's not finished either.

I'm assuming this series will continue with Sam and Kaia's story because its been left with a lot of unanswered questions. With that said though, I enjoyed their story so far and I'm intrigued and excited about what's going to happen in the future for them and the side characters. You better believe there is unfinished business!!.

As first reads go this is a great one!. I feel like this author started this series with a bang that will definitely leave readers wanting more. I'm excited to see were this goes in the future.

Such a fun read. I had zero expectations going in and I just loved every page. I loved the premise, the characters and the development. It was effortless to read and I am just dying for the sequel! It’s a great book and worth the read; especially never having read books about a selkie and sirens.

Thank you Sonya Blake for providing me a copy of this book for an honest review.

Under the Surface delivers exactly what Sonya Blake promises: a steamy romance set in a paranormal world where legends and creatures collide.
The sexual tension and chemistry between Kaia and Sam is quick to ignite and maintains a steady burn throughout this story. Reader beware: some of these scenes next level sizzling!
Blake's imagery and descriptive writing style helps establish a grounding in the setting, whether that be the blustery Foley's Point where Kaia and Sam are intimate or the cool depths of Quolobit bay where Kaia learns more about being a Siren.
The romance and the unfurling of the paranormal world were pleasantly balanced, carrying me through the book at a comfortable yet exciting pace. I finished this book over the course of a few days and kept finding myself reaching for it, despite it not being my usual or preferred genre (i.e. adult fantasy).
While I didn't totally buy in to the all-consuming romance (I'm a cynic who doesn't read a lot of romance) I did feel that the characters were relatable, realistic and their reactions to the world around them made sense.
I read Under the Surface while away for the weekend on the coast and would absolutely recommend it for a holiday read. It is fun, exciting and easy to devour and I can see myself thoroughly enjoying a sequel.

This was my first paranormal romance novel and it did not disappoint! ⠀

Kaia is in Maine trying to sell her parent’s house, hoping it will rid her of childhood memories. She’s recovering from a broken heart, so this escape comes at the perfect time. She’s done with love. Enter Sam. A tough, rugged fisherman with a soft side and a secret. After revealing their true selves, the two form an unlikely and sizzling bond. Their relationship would be smooth sailing if it weren’t for Sam’s previous lover, Violet. This witchy ex holds a visceral power over Sam that can’t be broken.⠀

Sonya’s writing is perfectly fluid. The storyline is believable and relatable, which can be hard to do in a paranormal book. Her descriptive writing makes you feel like you’re in Maine in the winter. I found myself racing to finish this one, I couldn’t read it fast enough. ⠀

This is the first book in the Song of the Siren series, and I can’t wait to see what happens with Kaia and Sam. ⠀

Thank you, Sonya for allowing me the opportunity to read and review before it’s available June 28!⠀

When a Selkie and a Siren fall in love in the modern day and age. When old spells, modern love, and ancient magic come to life.
When you get sucked into the story and it wouldn't let you go...
Then you are probably reading "Under The Surface" - a magical paranormal romance. A riveting read. Nailbiting drama.

I love the Siren - Selkie pairing. It is unusual and fresh.
The story flows easily, the narrative is engageing and well-written, and I sped through this book in no time.
The characters are well fleshed out and totally relatable.
And the chemistry between Kaia and Sam is explosive (like 5x🌶 🔥). (Scorching sex-scene warning!).

...and the antagonists are pretty wicked, too!

What's left to say? I am waiting impatiently for part 2.

I read this book in 3 days (and if I didn't work I probably would have read it quicker)! Immediately I was drawn into Kaia's world, her magical powers, and the budding romance with Sam. Sonya's writing paints such a vivid image that I felt transported to the coast of Maine. I'd highly recommend Under the Surface to anyone looking to escape today's crazy reality!

This book did not disappoint me. It had everything it promised, love, magic and more. Love the Maine setting since our family spent many summer vacations camping in Maine and on Great Duck Island off the coast of Maine. Sonya Blake's descriptions brought me right back there. Love the characters and cannot wait to see what the future brings for all.

Under the Surface is the debuted novel in a new series by Sonya Blake.

Blake did a great job creating a descriptive creative world blending sea and land elements. Her world-building has a uniqueness to it that drew me in, and her solid foundation kept me there. Blake takes you on a rollercoaster ride as her main character Kaia learns through an almost tragic event that she is, in fact, a siren, and the man she just met is a selkie.

Sonya created the first novel in her series with a bang. From plot twists to intense chemistry and an ending that leaves you wanting more. I am Intrigued to read how Kaia and Sam’s story progresses.

I was provided a copy of this book from the author for review purposes. The opinions are my own.

“‘I was born as a seal,’ he began, pausing for a deep breath. ‘Then, one day, I became a human.’”

I can tell you, that is a line I never expected to read in my life, but here we are.

Kaia is back in the small fishing town in Maine from her childhood for the first time since she was young to sell her family home. On her first night in town, Kaia meets a brooding fisherman named Sam. When Sam offers to take Kaia home in his boat, a storm hits and capsizes them. Struggling to survive the frigid water, Kaia experiences a change in her body that allows her to save herself and Sam...Kaia is a siren. She quickly discovers she’s not the only in town with a similar secret.

This book was a WILD ride. I’m pretty sure this was my first paranormal romance and omfg 🔥 The sex scenes in this book were so dang steamy. This was easily the steamiest book I’ve read so far in 2020.

I usually enjoy books about witches (which this had) but I loved the added elements of sirens and selkies and the main fo us being on them. Despite those paranormal aspects, this book seemed so real. The emotions of all of the characters were so easily felt and well written.

I’m really looking forward to the next installment of this series!

Having spent most of my childhood growing up in the woods of New England, the coast of Maine is near and dear to my heart. The call of the gulls and the spray of the cold salty ocean are among my most formulative memories. Blake's town of Quolobit Harbor drew me in and kept me hooked. Its rocky coves and small town secrets make it a perfect setting for this modern maritime myth.

Kaia and Sam- the two main characters- are achingly relatable despite their magical qualities, and their instant chemistry is a feast for the senses! I have been an avid fan of paranormal romance for many years, and I will say their unique pairing (and all its wild challenges) combined with their scorching sex scenes have secured this as my new favorite in the genre. Their mysterious and perilous story intertwined with the evocative setting of Quolobit was a fun and exciting journey that I didn't want to end!

Blake has created a fantastic start to what I am sure will continue to be a satisfying and sexy series. I absolutely could not put this book down and I cannot wait to see what happens next for Kaia and Sam!

It might be set in the middle of winter in Maine, but this story is hot as hell. In her debut novel, Sonya Blake beings magic and mythological creatures to shake up the sleepy seaside town of Quolobit Harbor. Sam and Kaia, our mysterious main characters, have believable emotional baggage, relatable struggles, and love scenes that are almost unbearably steamy, and through it all Blake weaves in elements of the paranormal that make their story all the more captivating. Sam and Kaia's attraction is as irresistible for them as it is for the reader; I was hooked on their story from the moment they met. The other characters who populate their world add compelling complexity to their situation, leaving them with painful decisions to make about the future of their love and their own acceptance of themselves.
I received a copy of the ebook as part of my Kickstarter reward. I was proud to support this book, and so impressed to see the finished product. Sonya Blake is a born storyteller with an uncommon knack for romance, and I can't wait to read more from her!

“𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲...𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵, 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘁.”—Sonya Blake

When Kaia returns to main to sell the family home she inherited, she doesn’t anticipate all the secrets buried there. Or the enigmatic Sam, who has plenty of secrets of his own, and a curse. When a storm nearly kills both of them, Kaia saves Sam’s life and discovers she’s a Siren. This leaves her questioning everything.

This paranormal romance set in Maine was filled with plenty of excitement. Spicy love scenes, maritime legends, vindictive witches. It has it all! Not only that, there’s plenty of action that keeps you turning pages. And, its short chapters give way to a quick read. I liked Kaia’s fiery personality and her red head of hair to match. The chemistry between Sam and Kaia was sizzling from the first pages, leaving my naughty heart delighted!

While the romance between Sam and Kaia takes front center, there are two storylines woven into the pages. Sam is under a curse and at the mercy of a witch who controls him. This presents Sam with a number of challenges. Meanwhile, Kaia must contend with a bloodthirsty siren and shortly thereafter, a whole gang of them, intent on keeping her locked in their underwater world. Both Kaia and Sam must fight their own battles, rather than a joined effort. I liked that they each had their own fish to fry, so to speak (pun intended, hehe). We often see stories where the big show down is linked between characters. But for these two, they are both on an individual journey of personal growth and discovery. I liked that because it deviates from the typical.

My only critiques were that as much as I loooove lots of sex, it definitely took front and center. I wouldn’t have minded a bit more storyline and a smidge less sex. BUT it was done well. And that’s just a personal preference. Also, I don’t tend to be a huge fan of the instant love trope, which takes place here because of Kaia and Sam’s instinctual connection. Again—another personal preference. Neither of these issues translate to everyone.

Overall, this is a perfect book for those who love mermaid stories, self discovery, and tons of spicy love woven into the pages. It’s the first in a series, and I enjoyed it enough that I’ll definitely be reading Sonya Blake’s next release to see what happens next. 𝗠𝗬 𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚: 𝟰/𝟱⭐️

Book one in the Song of the Siren series will draw in fans of coastal folklore and spicy paranormal romance.

It follows Kaia Foley, a lost and grieving soul who returns to her long-abandoned family home on the coast of Maine. When she nearly drowns on a stormy night, she is shocked to discover she is a siren – part of a thriving community of magical beings who gravitate towards the area. As she comes to terms with this new part of herself, she must navigate new friendships, a silent stalker from the ocean, and her attachment to the fisherman who might just mend her broken heart.

The story is written in a cleverly simple way that keeps you intrigued and makes it easy to justify just one more chapter. There are multiple POVs and a couple of flashbacks, which are effective ways of examining the lives and capabilities of different magical creatures without overloading the reader with world building or backstory.

The romance is fast – an 'instant connection' kind of deal – but the emotion soaks into the writing regardless and you can't help but root for the central couple (despite all their bad decisions!). Be aware that when the author describes this as spicy she really means it, and a large portion of the book covers the developing physical and romantic bond between the central couple.

I did leave this story wishing quite a few of the non-romance plot lines were explored further. I knew I was signing up for a romance, but I began to find the modern-day magic system, the environmental issues and the struggles the different creatures faced more interesting, and would have loved more depth in those areas. Some characters - even one I thought was going to be the ultimate villain - were introduced then never mentioned again. But I know there are plans for a second book in the series, so perhaps the author will reveal more in book two.

A big thank you to the author for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

What to Expect
✨ Curses
✨ Sirens, Witches, Selkies
✨ Multiple POV
✨ Insta-Love/Attraction

What I Liked
The fantasy elements were new and creative. It was very interesting reading my first fantasy featuring sirens and selkies. There were plenty of twists and reveals that kept the story engaging from start to finish.

I enjoyed when the book switched over to the villain POV. It's not common to get that in your fantasy reads. This POV was edgy and provocative and was utterly captivating to read what is going through the mind of a villain.

What I Didn't Like
I can't fault the writing. I think this was well-written and the pacing was good, but things happen almost too quickly for my taste. The bulk of the story takes place over a week or so. As a result, the romance feels fairly surface level. It is largely based on attraction and the main characters knowing each other's biggest secrets. The plot jumps around and is a bit chaotic. There are some fantasy elements left unexplained that made me question what I was reading. For instance, why does time move faster in the ocean? Magical phenomenon like this are sprinkled in, but not given the explanation they deserve.

This book has a spice level I was not expecting and not prepared for. If you like dark romance, there are some scenes here that you will enjoy. It was hot, but one part that appeared to be non-consensual left me with an uneasiness that I would have rather not experienced.

Overall, it was an interesting read, but not really my cup of tea. It could be yours though!

Thank you, Sonya Blake, for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This story is a debut - s three stars are more than I would give ANY experienced author with this story. I have high hopes that the next story f this author will be better.
I will start with what made me stop and think about this story - I really like the cover, and the burb intrigued me that much that I gave under the surface a shot. Was this what I was looking for? Or rather not? I'm in the middle - as I see the potential of Ms. Blake in this story.
I really liked that the story came into the action fast and somehow our female lead. The style was not bad, it made a nice addition.
I didn't like that I had not created ANY connection with characters, I was like a bystander... also fantasy elements - they were there, but not explored and I felt this story would also work without those elements.
This is unfortunate but my thinking is just like that.

I absolutely dove right into this book... Head first as a matter of fact! It was so easy to get lost in it's pages. A fantastic weekend read, as I read it in a day & half! Sonya Blake's writing style easily connected with my imagination. Her characters and settings instantly came to life for me. It also centered around the things I enjoy most... Art, the water, music, love and magic. The mix of mythical creatures flowed through the story seamlessly. I felt like the book had a consistent pace which is probably why I had trouble putting it down! I hope that one day we will find ourselves back in Maia and Sam's world. I'm a sucker for a series but even if the author never ventures into those waters... this tale of magical romance was a splendid read.

A mermaid, a sexy fisherman, romance, and steamy love scenes... Yes, please! I won this book in a giveaway. It had been on my TBR list for a while, so you can imagine how excited I was when I won! I never win anything, so this was extra special. :D

You don't see mermaids in books very often... at least I haven't. So, this was an intriguing idea when I first saw Sonya's posts on Instagram. And the idea worked! Sonya's world-building and creativity were on point. The chemistry between Kaia and Sam is obvious and has you rooting for them while they struggle with enemies and secrets that try to interfere with their love.

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Sonya in the future. I definitely recommend! :)

A very surprising series of events leaves you curious and looking forward to more. I found that when I turned the last page that I didn't want it to end. The male protagonist is probably my favorite. He's a bewitched horny dude meets existential life journeyer of the sea. Kaia, while reactive, is very relatable and dear. The author paints this heroine with clarity as to be able to visualize sitting by her side as she plucks away on her banjo and sings in her raw and true way. I wish there had been more of the store owner, Felicia. We all need a Felicia, one who just know what is what and tells the tea like it is. Just read this. ♥️

I was gifted this book and was pleasantly surprised at the simple, mindless read. There isn’t much depth to it, but I think that was the allure for me. I gave it less than 5 stars because although I enjoyed it and wanted to know what happened…it left me in lack. I wanted to know what happened next but I also was kind of growing bored of the story line and characters. I wonder if there will be a next book and how the author would grow these characters.
February 8, 2024
By no means a slow-burn, Under the Surface will have you intensely excited for the next part. While I wished more time was given to see the characters grow, both as characters and in relation to one another (I am mostly talking about the romance), I was still invested enough to keep the pages flying by. Fun, fast-paced, but maybe not the most layered story ever. But, still a very good read in my eyes.

A vulnerable heroine, a conflicted hero, set in a wild and mystical setting took me on the most tantalizing journey this Covid summer. Thank you Sonya Blake. I just knew Kaia would overcome her newfound siren powers but I didn’t expect a character like Sam. What a delight. Can’t wait to read about their next adventure. Loved the twists and turns....what’s next!!!
