East and West. Humans and Spirits. Breccans and Tamerlaines. The Isle of Cadence has always held itself and its residents in a tenuous balance. But now Bane, the spirit of the North Wind, has pushed everyone and everything in his path off-kilter in a bid to claim dominion over all.

In the West, Adaira struggles to adjust to the more brutal, bitter ways of life among the Breccans. Striving to find her place in the clan, she swiftly realizes that it just might be the last role she desires to hold. And while magic blooms effortlessly for the Breccans in the west, the spirits continue to suffer beneath Bane’s harsh power, felt in every gust of wind.

In the East, Jack is adrift without Adaira until he sings to the ember-weak fire spirits, acquiring a dangerous mission he never expected. One that is destined to lead him westward. Likewise, Torin and Sidra are consumed by a new mystery as sickness spreads first amongst the crops, and then to the people of the Tamerlaine clan. While Sidra desperately searches for a cure, Torin dares to strike a bargain with the spirits—a precarious folly anytime, but especially now as the days grow darker.

With the island falling further out of balance, humans and spirits alike will need to join together to face Bane, and Jack’s gift with the harp will be called upon once more. Yet no one can challenge the North Wind without paying a terrible price, and the sacrifice required this time may be more than Jack, Adaira, Torin, and Sidra can bear to pay.

In the stunning conclusion to the Elements of Cadence duology, A Fire Endless finds the delicate balance between the human and faerie realm threatened by Bane, the spirit of the North Wind, whose defeat can only come through fire, song, and heart-rending sacrifice.

this series is so, so lovely. it has the same comfort of a warm hug and magical cosiness of a daydream.

and the atmosphere of this story is just as strong as it was in the first book. the fairytale-esque vibes with the lure of scottish charm is just so lush. the mysterious island of cadence, the resolution to an age-old feud between clans, and exploring the realm of spirits create a very tangible world.

and i cant get over how great the characters are. they are individuals that are so easy to empathise with and care for. the two main couples are separated for a good portion of the book, but i found myself not hating it as i normally would. i love how they each all bring something to the story.

overall, a wonderful conclusion to a tale filled with so much heart.

a massive thanks to harper voyager for the ARC!

“If I am weak for wanting you, then let me embrace that weakness and make it my strength,” he said, his gaze fixed on the west. “And if you must haunt me, then let me haunt you in return.”

I think i just found my new favorite, comfort book 🫶🏻 this book deserves all the love and the stars ✨ it’s so tender and gentle it’s so gorgeous and beautiful i could cry for how beautiful the book really is. This series took me to another magical, wonderful world. It provided me with a place to escape my responsibility and my reality and it was the best thing ever. I was so lost and found in this book. The plot and the characters and the feelings this book made me feel are unforgettable.💖

This was way better than river enchanted in my opinion. The characters development and struggles and the mystery, the plot twist everything was very good and it was the perfect conclusion to the story that started in river enchanted 🫶🏻 i can’t recommend this series enough 😭 i think everyone one should experience this lyrical and beautiful writing and the magical story. If you loved divine rivals you’re definitely going to adore this series. Because this is absolute ✨P.E.R.F.E.C.T.I.O.N ✨
on my way to force me friends to read this series rn 🤭🏃🏻‍♀️🔪

“You don’t know what you do to me,” he whispered. “By you alone I could be undone.”
🫠🫠

jack and adaria .
Their love and longing for each other was so strong and obvious here. Adaria won’t let anything happens to jack or the ones that she loves and she would rather die than to see him hurt 🥹 and jack would do anything to be with her her. He sacrificed everything his family and his crown and his immortality 🧎🏻‍♀️ their love was so strong and beautiful. Everytime they touched, kissed, made love was so sensual and heartwarming🫠 💕

“Although I couldn’t be more pleased, Sid. To make a child with you. I hope the bairn has your eyes and your smile, your laughter and your courage. Your skills and your patience and your kindness. I hope our child inherits all of your traits and only a few of mine.”
“Half of me and half of you,” Sidra insisted. “Until they become their own person.”
I can’t I’m literally obsessed with them 😭🫶🏻

Torin and Sidra
they were my favorite in the first book and they’re my favorite in the second one ✋🏻 I’d literally sacrifice/do anything to be loved the same way torin loved sider. To find someone who is willing to go and sacrifice himself just so i can live.To find a man who cries and in pain every night because he can’t be with me 😭 even tho they were separated for like most of the book they still managed to make me love them even more 😭🫶🏻 they just mean so much to me . The way I’m obsessed with them is literally unhealthy 😭😭 My standers are sky high after meeting torin and jack ↗️↗️

Quotes

“You’re staring at me, Jack,” she whispered. He began to move across the bed toward her. “I can’t seem to draw my eyes away from you.”

“I was so worried you had forgotten me in your new realm, and the time we shared here. That if I ever saw you again, you wouldn’t remember me.” “Even if I lived a thousand years in the fire,” Jack said, “I would not forget you. I would not allow myself to.”

“She was home with Torin. She may have been in the west, with sunlight streaming in through the window, but she was home in his arms. She had never felt safer, or more deeply known and loved as he whispered her name.”

“It was so heavy within me I could hardly crawl. But then your music found me on the floor. Your words found me at my weakest,at my darkest hour. You reminded me to breathe to inhale, to exhale. You reminded me of all the gleaming moments we shared, even if it had just been for a season. You reminded me of what could still be if I was brave enough to reach out and claim it.And I would tell you to sing up a hundred storms, if only to hear such beauty and truth again. To feel it settle in my bones and warm my blood. To know it is mine and mine alone to claim.I love you, more than these humble words and this everlasting ink can say. I love you, Jack.”

"If I am weak for wanting you, then let me embrace that weakness and make it my strength, and if you must haunt me, then let me haunt you in return."

The Isle of Cadence is being affected by a terrible blight that is threatening the land and the lives of it's inhabitants. Bane, the spirit of the wind must be stopped before irreparable tragedy overtakes the mortal and spirit realms. With Adaira and Jack separated and Torin and Sidra taking on new roles as leaders, they must all find a way to do their part to ensure the safety of the island and their people and maybe even achieve the unthinkable and unite the East and the West once and for all.

"I was thinking about all the different paths our lives take, how little choices here and there suddenly guide us to places we never expected. How sometimes even the worst of experiences turn us into what we need to be, even though we would rather avoid the pain. But we grow stronger- we grow sharper- and before we truly know it, we are looking back on it all. We see who we were, and we see who we have become, and it's why the spirits watch us and marvel."

This duology was so cozy and atmospheric. I really loved the enchanting world that Rebecca Ross painted for us throughout these two books. There is magic and romance. Family bonds that are put to the test and deep-rooted ideas from rival clans that are challenged. The cast of characters are all layered and engaging and have you emotionally invested from the beginning. There were a few storylines that felt underdeveloped as well as the conclusion, as a reader I wished I had more closure with some plot lines and some more answers, but I still really enjoyed this series overall.

"You don't know what you do to me, by you alone I could be undone."

Jack- I love Jack in this series. I appreciated a softer representation of mmc. It was beautiful how he supported Adaira and admired her and her strengths and let her lead while also being confidant in his own talents and strengths. I thought the love between Adaira and Jack was explored much more and it was so sweet. His love and devotion to her was amazing. I also really appreciated his relationship with his Nan and his father. I wished there was more of their interactions.

"No one hurts the ones I love. No one."

Adaira-I really loved how Adaira's more fierce nature really came out to play once she went to live in the West. I loved how she navigated finding her footing in a new place and how she embraced all sides of herself. Her interactions with her parents were so touching and I felt for all them. I wished we also got more of them together and had more insight into them becoming a family.

"She was home with Torin. She may have been in the west, with sunlight streaming in through the window, but she was home in his arms. She had never felt safer, or more deeply known and loved as he whispered her name."

Torin and Sidra -My King and Queen! My love for them can't be measured but I confess that Sidra is my absolute favorite character throughout this series. This woman is a pillar of strength, grace and wisdom. She is PERFECT and I am devoted to her! This book really allows her to show how strong and capable she is, and I was loving all it. My poor Torin found himself in a precarious situation again and even though I loved how he ultimately handled his business; I have to admit I was not a fan of how they had my babies separated for most of the book. Especially since they couldn't communicate for some of book one and now again, they were shoved apart and I was quite grumpy about to be honest.

"She let them all go because he was her home, her shelter. Her endless fire, burning through the dark."

I really loved this series; it was a solid four-star duology throughout and that is really great! The only thing I would say is that some things felt very underdeveloped to me and left me a tiny bit disappointed. Moray's storyline felt like a plot device and a missed opportunity, we never really got to see his motivations for wanting to find Adaira. I was expecting more answers there. The ending also felt really anti-climactic, and I think an epilogue could have really helped tie up all the loose ends that were left hanging bc the ending felt really abrupt to me and left me with so many questions.

More Quotes I Loved

"Torin imagined Sidra stepping into this chamber. This was the room where he was destined to sleep beside her, a chamber where he would draw sighs from her mouth and hold her against his skin, night after night. These were the walls that would shleter them for the remainder of their days on the isle."

"He was her other half, and he was bound to her as she was to him."

"I've come to be with my wife."

"I am first yours, as you are first mine. Before all others."

" I don't need autumn, or winter, or spring, I want you eternally."

"To live your life you have forged yourself to be as strong as possible, you have made yourself like a blade that is hammered over a fire and quenched in water. Day after day. But there is nothing weak in being soft, in being gentle." 😭💙

“If I am weak for wanting you, then let me embrace that weakness and make it my strength,” he said, his gaze fixed on the west. “And if you must haunt me, then let me haunt you in return.”

I absolutely loved this book! This was an enchanting and beautiful Scottish fantasy about love, duty, courage, and loyalty. A Fire Endless follows Torin, Sidra, Adaira and Jack as they search for a cure for the sickness that is effecting the people and the land on the isle. Along this search they each face their own challenges and opportunities that will shape their lives forever. Each of the characters much make a difficult choice to save the isle.

"You don't know what you do to me," he whispered. "By you alone I could be undone."

I fell in love this with this enchanting world and the amazing characters even more in this book. The pacing was perfect and the plot engaged me the entire book. There were several plot twists that I didn't expect that had me at the edge of my seat. I loved learning more about this unique world inspired by Scottish folklore. I enjoyed learning more about the elemental faeries (earth, wind, fire and water) and their past. The stories of the past flowed seamlessly through the lyrical and descriptive writing. The fall vibes in this book was immaculate and made me want to snuggle up in a cozy blanket. The ending was so beautiful and heartbreaking. I was so happy that the characters had the ending that they deserved. I honestly cried both happy and sad tears. This book has my whole heart.

"It was so heavy within me I could hardly crawl. But then your music found me on the floor. Your words found me at my weakest, at my darkest hour...You reminded me of all the gleaming moments we shared, even if it had just been for a season. You reminded me of what could still be if I was brave enough to reach out and claim it. And I would tell you to sing up a hundred storms if only to hear such beauty and truth again. To feel it settle in my bones and warm my blood. To know it is mine and mine alone to claim. I love you, more than those humble words and this everlasting link can say. I love you Jack."

The characters are so amazing and they will be in my heart for a long time. I love Jack and Adaira so much! I loved how protective they are to each other and will do anything for each other including give up their purpose in life. I also loved that they understood one another and were able be their selves. It warmed my heart so much that they were able to find each other even in the darkest times. There were several scenes with Jack and Adaira that made me smile and blush. I adore Torin and Sidra so much too! They both went through so many challenges and still had a lot of hope. Torin and Sidra made me believe in love. I loved one scene at the end with them so much, I had a huge smile on my face the whole time. Torin's character development was excellent, I'm so proud of him and his strength after the challenges he went through. All four of the main characters had excellent development. I also really liked the side characters especially Niall, Frae, Mirin, David and Kae. They each had great personalities and I enjoyed learning about their past.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy, amazing characters, excellent world building and great romance between the characters.

4.5 stars

at first, i was very hesitant to jump back into it because icl the first book was very boring and although i enjoyed it, it was putting me to sleep a bit. but this felt completely different i love rebecca ross’ writing style, she makes you feel so entwined with the pages. i felt like i was there.

this series is definitely different from all other fantasy books ive read and im not sure how to describe the vibes it gave me but it felt like i was in the setting of the movie brave with this enchanted forest and whisps and elemental spirits all around me!!

i think we also got a lot more romance from my loves torin&sidra and jack&adaira!!! their romance is so pure and blissful i love watching their confessions of love and how you can so deeply tell how the mmc’s care for the fmc’s.

As if it were weakness to share one's burdens with another. But I am with you now. I am yours, and I want you to lay your burdens down on me, Adaira.

jack & adaira. they are SO CUTEEEEEE. personally, they’re my favs. although at times it feels very isn’t lovey, it’s so adorable how they call each other old nemesis 🥹 and to give them the ending that they absolutely DESERVE makes my heart flutter <333

torin & sidra are literally my parents. although i forgot to tab some of my fav moments btwn them they are to die for. the way torin is willing to do anything for sidra and protect her at all costs 🥹🥹

i truly did love this book, although it made me a bitttt sleepy at points!! the ending was absolutely perfect, the perfect ending to a series <33

if you did not like the first book you probably wouldn’t like this one but i can admit it was a lot better!!

book #1: a river enchanted

quotes:

I love you, more than these humble words and this everlasting ink can say. I love you, Jack.

"You don't know what you do to me," he whispered. "By you alone I could be undone."
Adaira raised her hand from the water to trace his collarbones, his golden half coin, flickering in the light.
"I know it well," she replied. "But only because you have done the very same to me."

She could call him whatever she felt like, because he was with her and that was all that mattered to him. He was breathing the same air as her, standing in the same moment with her.

ik i said i would write a long one but im in a slump oh well

Quick Note - I went into this series with high hopes. Elements of Cadence was marketed as a fantasy duology based in Scottish/Celtic folklore, dealing in musical magic. Not only am I a fantasy reader, not only am I of Scottish descent, but 9 times out of 10, I'm either listening to Loreena McKennitt or the soundtrack from The Wicker Man (1973). I went into this thinking this would for sure be up my alley...

I think the main problem of this series is focus.

A series can be considered mature for its subject matter, its graphicness, and the level of its writing, but also for what storylines the author chooses to prioritize. In both books of Elements of Cadence, author Rebecca Ross's focus is firstly and firmly on romance, prioritizing the relationships of Jack & Adaira and Torin & Sidra over all else.

This isn't to say that I think love stories are immature; truly, I love love and prefer my stories to have at least a little romantic tension in them. My concern is this: When there are other concurrent plotlines, especially ones written to have major implications for the story, I find following the romantic plot instead misguided.

In A River Enchanted, little girls were being abducted from the community. For the bulk of the book, the main characters didn't know if these children were dead or alive, much less who took them...yet the investigation wasn't what was important. Really, it was just a device to ensure Jack and Adaira had to work together and to bring Torin and Sidra together. While these girls are missing - including Torin's young daughter Maisie - the town stops everything to throw Jack and Adaira a wedding party; Torin forgets he's a grief-stricken father and officiates their wedding with a big smile on his face. Later on, while Maisie is still MIA, he and Sidra bang...in the house empty of his little girl.

I don't know what it's like to have a missing child, but I do know what it's like to be part of a community impacted by a child's disappearance, neglect, or death. I know what it's like to have sympathy for those affected. I know it's not a time to party.

In A Fire Endless, Adaira goes to live with the Breccans of the west, a people so resource deprived they attack and steal for survival. (This is at least how they're described in the first book; in book 2, we see they have resources enough to run major gladiatorial events and support a royal court...) The main characters have to resolve the conflict between the east and the west, hoping to establish trade to help keep the Breccans fed during the winter months. But this isn't the book's focus. The main plot of the story is Jack and Adaira, separated, reuniting, and Torin and Sidra, separated, also reuniting. The conflict between east and west (as well as spirit and corporeal) exists to threaten the relationships.

With the focus being on the romance, few details are allowed for anything else. For a fantasy series, worldbuilding is nonexistent. It relies heavily on whatever knowledge the reader brings in about historical Scotland to fill in the gaps. We don't know what Tamerlaine society and culture is like, so we can't see what ways it differs from the Breccans (just that one group wears green, the other blue). These people live every day with spiritfolk, but little is told of how this affects their belief system - much less that of the world outside their island. Any characters that aren't Jack, Adaira, Torin, and Sidra are fodder; they matter so little, any could be erased at random and the story would still commence as written.

And all the answers come easily. Tamerlaine and the Breccans are vying? Well, Torin and Sidra will rule the former and Jack and Adaira the latter (despite both parties' disregard for statecraft). Jack is stuck in the Spirit World? Actually no, he's not - expect him home in 100 days or so. Jack can't play music anymore? No biggie, he didn't do much of that anyway. Someone is poisoning the royal court! Oh, it just so happens to be the one guy who's been mean to our mains.

Most disappointing, however, is this: We don't know what Jack's music sounds like. In a series about musical magic, no descriptions are given of how or what he plays - not a lyric, not a sound. The magic system is so unimportant & shallow that Jack spends the majority of A Fire Endless not playing music at all. Instead, we learn of how he plays Adaira, and of the sounds he pulls from her lips doing so.

So juvenile - and this is coming from someone who listens to the song The Landlord's Daughter on a regular basis.

A River Enchanted and A Fire Endless are the two books that comprise The Elements of Cadence Duology by Rebecca Ross. These enchanting stories read more like a ballad, weeping searingly discordant notes of hope and sorrow and of love and betrayal, imperfectly in balance but held steady by a flowing magical cadence.

I was totally unprepared to embark upon such a journey through the perilous waters and rolling hills teeming with meddlesome faeries and contentious clans on the Isle of Cadence. Magic on the isle has been grossly upset for a long time, creating a bountiful isle in the East where magic can be wielded at a very steep cost, and a starving isle in the West where magic is abundant and can be used with no ill effects. The Tamerlaines reside in the East, and the Breccans are in the West. Because of his musical gift, Jack Tamerlaine gets called home to help in the search for lost girls quickly vanishing from the East. The young girls are blinking out of existence faster than answers are manifesting, and Jack, together with an old enemy, must piece together clues to save the girls and the isle. As the girls continue to disappear, suspicions are rising, and the atmosphere is becoming charged with fear. Old hatreds are bubbling to the surface, and the promise of impending violence is thick in the air, so peace seems a remote, if not impossible, idea for the two clans. But the fate of the children also seems hopelessly knotted together with establishing these tenuously nascent beginnings. The tale continues in the next book with an isle still contending with mounting tension not only between clans now, but also with the faery realm and its faery dictator called Bane, the spirit of the wind. A unified isle would give them a fighting chance against Bane, but healing the fatal wounds of an isle divided may also prove to be another impossible task. With the delicate scales of magic so greatly skewed, Bane’s bid for total control over the isle has released a cursed sickness in the land that must be cured to save the faery realm and humans alike from being completely consumed. Uniquely positioned to do so, Jack must make a stand for the humans and faeries of the isle and challenge Bane for power, but to do so would require a sacrifice he may not be prepared to make.

This fantastic tale begins as a mystery with the chords of fate pulled tight enough to snap, and it ends on a perfectly sweet note of self-discovery and irrefutable belonging, leaving the reader full of rectitude and rightness. The importance of family is the very heartbeat of this story, and I love that even when faith may have been waning in the spirits of the isle, people never lost faith in each other. This idea that love for one another could transcend everything and potentially heal what’s been sick, mend what’s been broken, and find what’s been lost creates such a powerful and beautiful sentiment. I also loved how music was so vital in the plot of the two stories. This book emotionally shredded me to pieces, but it also renewed a bit of my own lost faith and hope in community and the goodness of people. The romance scenes were chaste but heartachingly tender. I imagine both hard core romance readers and those just beginning to delve into that genre could find many things to appreciate in this fantasy romance series. The writing is lyrical and flows so effortlessly it was easy to get lost in the books, losing track of time and daylight—you might could say the faeries took me for a while! I think these books would be easy recommendations to people who also loved Outlander by Diana Gabaldon or One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig. Rebecca Ross has composed a stunning musical masterpiece that leaves the reader happily sated but craving more magically lyrical prose. These books are now shelved as favorites on my bookcase!

A big improvement from the first one and I found myself enjoying the writing style a lot. I just could not connect to the story as I wanted too but I had an enjoyable experience with this one.

However, I would say do not be influenced by my ratings as this duology was defo not my type.

This duology!! 🥰 🧡

“If I am weak for wanting you, then let me embrace that weakness and make it my strength…and if you must haunt me, then let me haunt you in return.”

I’m getting soft in my old age, because this entire duology just warmed my heart.

SPOILERS BELOW for A River Enchanted.

Adaira is currently in the East living with her birth parents and adapting to a new way of living.

Jack remained in the West with his family but cannot conceive of a future without Adaira in it.

Meanwhile, a mysterious illness is sweeping the land, the spirits believe Torin is the only one who can solve the riddle and save the people and land.

I love the mixture of whimsical and powerful, the magic and the emotions. Rebecca Ross’ writing is so encapsulating and I adored this world.

What an aptly named series - Elements of Cadence, given that is what it feels like reading this. It's poetry, prose and lyrical magic transporting you into a tale of folk and Scottish lore. The story, characters and writing should be cherished, as you feel surrounded by the spirits of the realm.

This book is such a vibe...

There is something in Rebecca Ross's writing that elevates a book. I cannot get over how this entire book just flows through musical words and imagery. It's an amazing work of art that blends in the Scottish land, lore and imagery with a tale of fairy folk wrapped with intricate worldbuilding. It's just absolutely astounding.

I read the first book a very long time ago, so I had completely forgotten how much I enjoyed this world and these characters. But stepping back into this, feeling the world, being back with Adaira, Jack, Torin and Sidra while they have to overcome a blight that is affecting both the East and West of the Isle and battle Bane (the North Wing and King of the Folk's) Ire.

I loved that I felt like I was living in this world. I could smell the air. I could taste the food and feel the plants under my feet and I could hear Jack's music. Even though the characters are simplistic in their ways, I love their growth and development in this book. I loved how Torin and Sidra stepped into their roles of Laird and Laird's Consort. I loved how Adaria stepped into learning her place in the West and exploring her new relationship with her real parents and I adored how much deeper it felt that her and Jack's relationship grew. I loved how sacrificing these characters are for each other and their people.

Overall a fantastic story that if you love fantasy should be picked up instantly!

I received an advance copy of this novel from the publisher, Harper Voyager, via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Have you ever read a sequel that retroactively made you love its predecessor even more, to the point that you actually go back and change your original rating? I originally loved A River Enchanted but had a few issues with it. But upon reading A Fire Endless, all of those issues have evaporated. I think this might be the closest thing to a perfect duology I’ve ever consumed. The balance hear is exquisite, the writing became more and more lyrically beautiful as the story progressed, and there’s just something to be said for a tale of hope and healing; those are woefully infrequent, and I was thrilled to find such a story within the pages of the Elements of Cadence duology.

A Fire Endless picks up right where A River Enchanted left off. As this is the case and I don’t want to potentially spoil the first book, I’m not going to discuss any specifics of the plot. I will say instead that there was instant tension here on multiple fronts, as we pick up fro the climax of the first half of the story. I love how seamlessly Ross wove her story in these two books; they do truly feel like two halves of one longer story that couldn’t quite fit itself into one bound volume. Even considering the aforementioned tension, and the increasingly high stakes, there’s something wonderfully cozy and wholesome about the world Ross crafted within the isle of Cadence. It might be broken, but the potential it carries shines incredibly brightly.

The characters who grew on me so slowly in A River Enchanted had my whole heart in A Fire Endless. Jack and Adaira, Torin and Sidra, Mirin and Frae and others we are introduced to in this second installment, are all wonderful, imperfect characters who I loved rooting for. Our story fractured into various plot-lines here, but I was equally invested in all of them. I love when a story with shifting points of view can accomplish this level of readerly investment across the board, where there’s no temptation to skin through one point of view so the reader can get back to the perspective that interests them most.

Just like the characters have grown on me, so have their relationships. There are multiple relationships here, but the two that are most core to the story are that of Jack and Adaira, and that of Torin and Sidra. Both are beautifully handled, and the growth of both couples from the beginning of the first book through this one is breathtaking. Scenes between the couples are a little less fade-to-black than they were in A River Enchanted, but they’re still very tasteful and far from graphic. These are not spicy romances, but they’re beautifully heartfelt one. The bedroom scenes here are less about the mechanics and more about the emotions involved.

Speaking of romance, I feel like that word truly encapsulates the entirety of the duology. Not just in terms of the relationships themselves, but regarding the setting, and the magic, and the writing itself. The tone of the narrative is intensely romantic. Reading this made my heart hurt, but in the best way possible. Something about the loveliness of Ross’s craftsmanship and creativity made me yearn.

The focus of this entire story is one of healing. Whether that is the healing of an individual’s physical body, the healing of romantic or familial relationships, the healing of the earth or the healing of a nation, every quest embarked upon is done with healing as treasure to be attained. I love how we see this in such a variety of ways in both the physical realm and the spiritual realm. And I still love so much how one of the ways healing comes here is through music. That resonates with me so strongly. There were certain scenes toward the end that made my heart ache, but in such a cathartic way. Ross wrapped up the story beautifully; there’s nothing I would change.

A Fire Endless is an exquisitely lovely end to the Elements of Cadence duology. Ross’s writing is gorgeous, lyrically so, and I can’t wait to read more from her. If you’re looking for a lush, Celtic-inspired fantasy with elemental magic, heartfelt romance, an emphasis on music and a perfect balance struck between high stakes and a cozy setting, I can’t recommend this duology fervently enough. This is a story that I can’t wait to have on my physical shelves, so I can revisit it again and again. If I could actually visit, or even live in, any fantasy world, I think it just might be Cadence.

5 stars for one of my favourite duologies I've ever read. She is beauty, she is grace. Rebecca Ross's writing slapped me in the face. It was the best experience.

I am sad to be saying goodbye to Jack and Adaira, Sidra and Torin, and the whole cast of wonderful supporting side characters who felt like anything but.

There is just something so magical about a book that stops you in your tracks. It doesn't rush, but takes its time enveloping you in lyrical prose...winding a trail in its wake until you come to a destination ending that's so beautiful, you immediately want to close the book and open to page one to have those feelings all over again. A Fire Endless will be one of those books that I will recommend for years to come, re read over and over again because it encapsulates every thing I love about fiction, fantasy and folktales.

“You and I have faced many things alone. Between the mainland and the isle, the east and the west, we've carried our troubles in solitude. As if it were weakness to share one's burden with another. But I am with you now. I am yours, and I want you to lay your burdens down on me.”

Whatever A River Enchanted had, A Fire Endless has that only its MORE. It is more romantic, more adventurous, more heartfelt and has a plot that just expands deeper with each chapter. I wont go into details because this is a second book and I think you know by now how much I love it.

The references brought full circle from book one strengthened the story and each characters arc was extremely well done. I loved the themes of resilience, healing, strength in loving and willingness to let grudges go for the betterment of all. These characters have left imprints on my literary heart and i'm so glad a story like this exists.

“If I am weak for wanting you, then let me embrace that weakness and make it my strength,” he said, his gaze fixed on the west. “And if you must haunt me, then let me haunt you in return.”

Like the first book, A Fire Endless was magical and comforting, with a beautiful balance of fantasy and romance. Relationships are put to the test and the deep-rooted beliefs of the two rival clans are challenged. The world Ross has created is cosy and enchanting, and the characters have great depth, making it easy to become emotionally invested in their stories from the start.

Each character was forced to look inside themselves and find the person they wanted to become. Although their paths were different, they all embarked on a journey of self-discovery. In the process, they became stronger and more confident, ready to face whatever challenges came their way. I'm very proud of them all.

ˏˋ꒰ Jack & Adaira ꒱ˎˊ

I loved Jack in this book, he's a gentle soul and I loved how much he grew throughout the story, he was confident in his talents and knew what role he had to play. He lost something in the process, but what he gained was worth it. I wish I could have seen more scenes of him with his family, especially at the end.

He didn’t sing for the isle or for himself. He sang for what had been and what could still be. He sang for Adaira.

Adaira's fierceness was on display and I loved how she stood up for herself and what she believed in. The scenes with her family were heartwarming.

He marveled at how his own heart could exist outside his body. “You don’t know what you do to me,” he whispered. “By you alone I could be undone.”

Jack and Adaira's romance got more focus in this book. It was so sweet and I loved how supportive Jack was of Adaira, he admires her so much.

ˏˋ꒰ Sidra & Torin ꒱ˎˊ

Sidra is my favourite character of the series. She's incredibly strong and fierce and she has the kindest soul - her empathy and selflessness are admirable.

Torin went through it in this book, the poor man suffered a lot. I understand how important his journey was and how it helped broaden his horizons and open his mind, but I wish it hadn't kept him away from everyone for so long.

“She was home with Torin. She may have been in the west, with sunlight streaming in through the window, but she was home in his arms. She had never felt safer, or more deeply known and loved as he whispered her name.”

Sidra and Torin have my heart and I have to admit I'm sad that there weren't many scenes of them together compared to the first book. They were apart for most of the book and although I could always feel their love, I longed for more time with them. Their love is beautiful and strong and it never faltered, not even in the most difficult of times.

I think some storylines were a bit underdeveloped and the ending felt a bit anticlimactic. An epilogue would have been perfect, I didn't get the closure I wanted. I finished the book craving more, although I understand why the author ended the book the way she did. It makes it feel like a fairy tale.

“You have made yourself like a blade that is hammered over fire and quenched in water. Day after day. But there is nothing weak in being soft, in being gentle.”

Nonetheless, I loved this duology and recommend it if you're looking for a cosy, whimsical fantasy tale.

[The story is slow to medium paced, so if you find yourself struggling to make progress, I highly recommend the audiobook. The narrator does a wonderful job and has a Scottish accent which makes the audio experience so much better.]

A Fire Endless was an absolutely stunning conclusion to the story that started with A River Enchanted. Honestly, I think this was even better than the first. Highly recommend this duology for those that love folkloric fantasy.

What an epic conclusion to an incredible story.
I was entranced by Jack and Adaira in the first book but they sacrificed their love for each other for the safety of their people. I was curious about what that means for the future of the East (Termalaines) and West (Breccans), and the fate of humans and spirits alike.
I loved how in the end, it took a united front from humans and spirits to lift the curse, strife, and enmity, bringing balance again to the Isle.
It was wholly engrossing and entertaining. Five stars.

This was an absolutely stunning conclusion to one of the most enchanting stories I've ever had the pleasure of consuming.
I think it's safe to say that this is now, officially, one of my favorite duologies of all time.

The vibes are immaculate, the writing is stunning, and the characters are deep and multifaceted.

This second book still had all the things I loved from the first, but also expanded the story so well! The story went in directions I wasn't expecting, but I loved seeing how these characters grew throughout. I also loved getting to see the customs and culture of the other side of the island, and meeting so many new characters. I enjoyed seeing the differences and similarities of the Breccans and Tamerlaines.

The character development in this book was also masterfully done - seeing Torin's journey with the spirits and Sidra in more of a leadership position really showcased how they have grown throughout the story.

This series is whimsical, lyrical, and steeped in Scottish folklore. It's a comfort series that I'll definitely be returning to in the future.

Considering how much I enjoyed the first book, this one really left me disappointed.

Everything that made A River Enchanted seem so charming and shiny is missing in its sequel. Everything about this fell flat for me. The plot, the characters, the locations.

The book didn’t need to be as long as it was, it was pretty slow and felt boring in parts.

#1 A River Enchanted — 3.25 stars
#2 A Fire Endless — 3.5 stars

this was a conclusion i didnt know i wanted. the first book was an okay read and didnt leave much hope for this one, but i found this to be a better installment overall. i was more invested in the characters. i feel like i got to know them more here after all the plot twists about them in the first book. the plot was more engaging even though it did feel slow at times. i also think the relationships (friendship, family, romance) felt more tender & emotional.

whats most surprising for me is that the main characters were separated doing their own thing/mission for more than half of the book. i tend to not enjoy this in a fantasy series, but it did not bother me at all in this book. i think its bcs i was feeling so-so about the barely-there romance. i wasnt particularly attached to the couples to begin with. so yeah, in this case it helped that romance was never the main focus of this duology—though i have to say that i liked Torin & Sidra more than Jack & Adaira.

similar duology (but better imo):
- Gilded by Marissa Meyer
