I loved this.
Never played the game. Didn't even know the RPG existed at all until I read the first volume.
So yes, this is something that anyone can read and enjoy, regardless of whether or not you've heard of this before.

description

You're still following all the same characters as you were the last time, but it's still mainly about Cecily Bain and the child she's pretending to have sired.
If your jam includes good horror comics about vampire clans and paranormal politics with plenty of (literal) backstabbing, I think you'd seriously enjoy Seely's take on this.
Recommended.

Started off a bit slower but things escalate in the second half very quickly. What I liked about this is that I didn't need to know anything about the RPG to enjoy this. It's for anyone that likes vampire stories, although some of these vampires have some crazy powers.

Despite the change in art in the last two issues (especially the dissonance with the mortician's hammers, though Stephen Molnar did a good overall job, but Corin Howell did NOT), despite my not really loving (but still, not hating) the Anarch Tales, despite a few nuts and bolts here and there, I am giving it 5 stars.

The reasons for this are simple: it does not break faith with you, it has consistently good and very fitting art (apart from what I mentioned above), it even manages to blindside you a little about characters' motives and deliver a sweet and sour ending in true Vampire fashion.

The comic's vampires are solid, even when it comes to their personalities' weaknesses. When it comes to gods and human-looking monsters, all these stories are basically a reflection of humanity writ large and dark, and the writers make a point to remind us that, without resorting to simple exposition or ill-fitting speeches.

I can honestly say that thus far, it has been a very good run.

I enjoyed this but wasn't as impressed as I was with volume one. It started off just as well. But about halfway through, I felt like the art got (comparatively) sloppy, and the story started to rush. I also didn't quite buy the ending of the Winter's Teeth storyline. I'd continue the story if I happened on the next volume. But, as of now, I liked volume one more than this second one.

VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE: VOL. 2: THE MORTICIAN'S ARMY by Tim Seeley, Blake Howard, and Tini Howard is the second installment of the entertaining graphic tie-in to the World of Darkness gameline. It finishes up the main story started in Winter's Teeth and while there is a three-issue follow-up, I think this is mostly a complete arc by itself.

For those unfamiliar with that, well, this isn't the comic for you. But for those who remembered the Nineties, you might recall a Goth themed tabletop roleplaying game called Vampire: The Masquerade. It is a game about the world being controlled by vampires who keep their existence secret while feuding with one another.

The premise of the comic line is former Anarch vampire, Cecily Bain, has adopted a stray vampire named Alejandra. The city is under assault by a group of hunters called the Mortician's Army. Cecily has become the scapegoat for the murder of both the Prince of the city as well as everything else going wrong as her (former) best friend, Calder Wendt, is trying to impress a visiting undead dignitary. Simultaneously, a group of Anarchs led by a Nosferatu named King Rat and a Thin Blood named Colleen Pendergrass are struggling to escape their own hunter problems.

The politics and writing of these comics is really impressive. Tim Seeley is already the author of one of my all-time favorite comics with Hack/Slash. However, this is something that is up there. I think the only reason it's not is the lack of gratuitous fanservice. Which I probably shouldn't admit to but, what can I say, I really love me some sexy vampires and would have appreciated some more here.

Really, the heart of the story is the characters. Cecily is a fascinatingly nuanced character more swept up in events than the direct architect. The writing manages to show both the decades-old vampire as well as the teenage girl who was turned. Calder Wendt puts up a mask of being a genius while being an incompetent fool trying to cover for himself. All the Anarchs are also deeply enjoyable with Colleen as my favorite. The fact I can talk about the depth of these comic book characters is its strongest selling point.

The art is, as always, fantastic and I love the Gothic Punk sensibility that has been updated to the 21st century. The vampires are a wide variety of appearances with very few being the impossibly pretty people of paranormal romance. While I miss the fanservice this entails, everyone looks like they might be able to pass themselves off as human beings.

The action is also good with the use of Disciplines as well as weapons being something that gives all the violence a hardened realistic edge to it. Humans are very squishy when exposed to the Kindred and I like that element. We only have the advantage against the undead until we squander it out of pride or a belief in "fair" combat.

The ending is suitably bleak and ironic with it having much of the appeal to be found in a Vampire: The Masquerade story. The worst are destroyed, the good are slain, and the only slightly evil are allowed to prosper. I wish this had remained an ongoing but, for what it is, it is an exceptionally good story.

After the brilliant setup of the first volume, this continuation of the VTM comics continued to celebrate a lot of the narrative tropes that the RPG is known for while keeping things surprising enough where it counts.

The Twin Cities are now without a Prince but of course, things are poised so that the reins of power can be passed on to the obvious candidate. But this is still a VTM story, so of course transitions of power are never straightforward.

I really enjoy the book as a whole - I could totally see this happening in an actual campaign. Sure, the Tremere feel a little overpowered in this book but given we had a lot of focus on their Primogen along with a Justicar, then it's inevitable they get a lot of time to shine. Eager to see where they'll take the rest of this series - hoping for more spotlights of other clans and maybe even the Sabbat?

A very fun spin of the World of Darkness system. If you're not familiar with the table top games, this series is still a great piece of vampire media. (Obviously start with volume 1, though.) These are especially fun to me as a Minnesota native. Seeing iconic sites of the Twin Cities through the eyes of certain creatures of the night will never get old. And man, there's some scary and gruesome stuff in here. It's exactly what a VtM graphic novel should be. I'm really looking forward to seeing where the next installment goes with this!

As with the first collection, this was a slow burn. I thought the first books were tanking the story, but starting with the third (#8 in the run), things got really good. The end was surprising, but not how I would have wanted to see it come to fruition.
The changing art style was weird and detracted from the overall run. I'm curious to read the next set when it comes out.

Hunters attack, secrets are revealed and Cecily is stuck tying the pieces together as new problems and the arrival of a Justicar add further stress to the Twin Cities.

If you are a fan of Vampire the Masquerade then you will most definitely enjoy this comic series. As a big fan of Vampire/White Wolf everything I'm honestly so stoked to see what more comes out of this revitalization. I want more great VtM comics and novelizations!

I preferred the first volume, it felt more in depth. Though I did find the whole cull thing interesting as an element to possibly integrate in a game one day.

Cecily is a badass.

I'm going to keep reading the series, even though werewolves are not my thing.

The 2nd volume was very slow and boring for me at the beginning, but soon things got intense. Vampires, hunters, battles, betrayals. Really enjoyable. I recommend it.

No me gustan los últimos capítulos, puesto que estilo artístico no me convence y me parece que se ha perdido la inmersión. Además, el argumento es bastante flojo.
